Re: [slim] Stop The Monster cable Bullying

2009-05-26 Thread AndreE

ok, trademark rights... it does not change the nature of the problem.
you are right also about million of words... the statistic also says
that few people on this earth may overcome a hundred thousand limit,
most are below or much below ten thousand.
Please do not take me wrong. I am not to offend anybody neither to
start a polemic.
The point is: Monster is widely spread and used word. And according
to the low in many countries it is not allowed to do so.
Just thing is MS would be successful to make a patent on several
programming commands like goto if and some others... the attempt was
in place, but likely it was refused.
There is a low and common sense
It is like internet name occupation for later sales
It should be prohibited to sue someone who does not abuse your
trademark by being in another business, neither to allow registration in
the areas where company has no business in.

Now that's really weired. iPeng will show:
- The server you were connected to the last time (unless you use

- All servers under additional servers.

Do you have any chance to connect (iPhone or iPod) to a different

If it's something strangely remaining in the settings, uninstalling and

[slim] powered speakers

2009-05-26 Thread aguess

i'm thinking about getting some powered speakers to get rid of the need
for a seperate amp between my squeezeboxes and speakers.

are there any decent ones out there. doing a search on google and i
keep ending up with links to speakers designed more for PC's rather than
playing relatively good quality audio in a living room and to also look
the part as well.

also, do speakers exist that can plug directly into either of the
digital outs of the slim recivers?

any info would be of help to kick me off in the right direction :)

do you find the volume range is enough on the squeezebox that you don't

Now that Sean has decided to move on (and I wish him every success), the
question springs to mind: has anyone been groomed to take his place on

I may be wrong, but I always got the impression that Sean was the one

also got the impression that he was the person who best knew some areas

So I very much hope that Sean has been mentoring a successor who

omfg, now they are awesome :D i'll bare them in mind for one day.

i'm actually starting to change my mind about powered speakers. none
of them are pretty in the tradional sense and size i want from a
speaker pair.

i think i might just get a small form factor amp (denon or cyrus
(already have two of these)) and thus expand my available selection :)

What the heck are you looking for? You can get any kind of speaker as
an active one these days!

Have you had a look at the link I posted. A full lineup, most of them
available as active speakers.
Wouldn't know what else you want.

EDIT: All of them available as active speakers, passive version for

yes, i did - thanks very much :)

i only really looked at the A5 series and to my mind i don't like the
look of them - mainly because i like a bit of wood :)

at first glance of some the other ranges that i do like the look of,
for example the classic compact, they didn't appear to be powered.
however, now you've said most of them come in an active version i have
take a second look and now noticed the link from the classic page for th
active option :)

now just a little nervous about moving away from the classic

[slim] Will Pandora come back to the UK?

2009-05-26 Thread DoomWolf

The PRS in the UK have announced a reduction in the costs paid by
streaming music services from 0.22p per track to 0.085p. It's hoped it
will encourage Youtube and Pandora back to the UK market.

I've really missed Pandora so I hope we hear some positive news soon.

Fully understand that :-)

Just did it myself and I have to admit I'm happy with it.
I agree the A5's (which are derived from th A7 studio monitor) probably
don't fit everywhere (although I was happy they come in white; look much
more unobtrusive then my old Cantons).
Also, at first I was concerned about volume since they are much smaller
than the ones they replace (less then half the volume; half the rated
power), yet you have to be aware there ARE advances in speaker
technology (mainly due to new magnets) and active speakers will need
less power than passive ones since you have less losses. The A5's, for
example, have a separate amp for each channel so you don't need any
filters behind the amp.

So if you replace speakers from 10 years ago or so expect them to be
smaller and have a lower power rating at the same output volume.

OK, this spate of new hardware coincides with Sean's departure, so what
might that tell us? It seems like Sean decided to stay through this
product development cycle before seeking new pastures. I postulate that
Sean's role has been diminished for quite a while, as Logitech continues
to release products which are variations on the SB3 platform. They are
essentially taking Slim's work on the SB3 and repackaging it with
Logitech-type enhancements like portability, built-in speakers, and
color-screen remote control. Which is fine, but it doesn't give Sean

Your comments make sense to me.

I'd posted some months ago that it is unusual for founders to stay
around for so long after an acquisition. It appears the reason they did
is that there is a contingent payout from Logitech to Sean et al if 2009
revenue exceeds certain levels. He would have been motivated to do
whatever possible to contribute to 2009 performance but in any event
would have normally been expected to leave after the contingent payout
either is or isn't achieved. My guess is that there will be more
departures in the coming months.

I welcome the evolution of the basic technology to new forms and hope
that gives the product line something more than the only modest success
it has had to date. While the technology is awesome and has done so much
for the enthusiasts who visit here (and the silent majority who don't),
the failure to achieve significant market success could ultimately doom
the whole undertaking. But it may be that it is indeed a niche market of
limited size.

[slim] Search

2009-05-26 Thread Rutt

I was very involved with the slimserver back in the day, but I've been
distracted and haven't paid much attention to my squeeze system for a
few years, but I thought I'd dust it all off and modernize. I bought a
Duet to see how cool the new controller is.

My number 1 impression is that I'm surprised that the squeeze
developers -still- don't understand search at all. The controller
(otherwise very cool) has no keyboard at all and entering a search
string is really painful. I guess nothing can be done about that.

But what about searching via the web interface. I tried beatles life
and would have expected it to find A Day in the Life. Searching for
a day in the life does find this on The Beatles, Sergeant Pepper's...

Jeez, you'd think that Google didn't exist at all, let alone ruling the
earth. Lazy Search's keyword search is much closer to what one would
expect in the age of Google.

I'd consider doing this as a plugin, but would appreciate a little
feedback from someone who actually knows what's involved.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Updated Squeezebox products?

2009-05-26 Thread Dingostrategy

Yes yes I know it's been asked before

But, would anyone care to consider my hypothesis that if SD came out
with a 'box' - think something like a NAS or a fitPC or mac mini (or
the sonos lump), Squeeze would be almost entirely on a par with Sonos?
BUT SD would have the added benefits of being totally tweakable with
opensource mods, and of course one is not limited to proprietary
amplifiers?

Further, the notion that SD is no good for multiple rooms has been
demonstrated to be utter balls time and time again. Fair enough sonos is
just plug and play, but even with my junk server and router, I handle
three just fine through concrete walls, without any hint of a delay in
syncing. Once or twice, I admit to having had sync issues on SN but its
a tiny price to pay, and takes a few seconds to fix by pausing and
restarting (might be just lucky).

All these new products is getting confusing. I thought we were all just
using SB3s until we could afford transporters and other geat to justify
one (and a boom for the guestroom!)

Keep the gear simple and tidy/slick up the back end (server and
controller) and what we have is something for everyone.

I add that I have used sonos. Its a neat party trick and anyone can use
it. Sounds good and is reliable. I just find the SD stuff so much more
flexible to fiddling around with different requirements. Price was not a
factor in my case since I initially had high-end gear after the
transport even though now as you can see in my sig I have crud. A
handsome controller and an optional in house server thingamajig would
cause some headaches over at sonos (but I do concur that both have space
in the market).

Like most people, Squeezeboxes changed my life: removing the rote task
of swapping CDs and making The Giant Jukebox wishlist I had a million
years ago not only feasible, but practical. A nice clean UI, tons of
enhancements from the community, and it is still the best-valued
consumer electronics device I have ever had the pleasure to use.

May your next project be as successful as the SB line has been.

You are correct back in the early days. I never quite understood how
Dean and Sean worked, but they were the heart and soul of SlimDevices.

They sold to Logitech to grow the business. There is only so much that
the founders can do, no matter how smart and hard working they are. So
in addition to pocketing some cash, they got the backing of a giant
company to do marketing, product research, etc.

Its been clear that more recent products were done by other engineers or
teams of engineers. The Boom has a lot of Caleb's fingerprints on it. So
its a good guess that recently, Sean has been the Big Boss who directs
the team.

The normal evolution of a company is for the founders to sell (merge,
IPO, etc.) and stay for a while, then the corporate suits come in. Sean
has stayed much longer than typical, so I bet that Logitech treated him
will. Still its a tradition.

What I don't know is who among the founders had the single-minded
vision. We all know that Apple without Steve Jobs is not Apple. We'll
soon see if SlimDevices without Sean follows that model. HP made great
products once Hewlett and Packard retired. Chevy and Ford as well.

All IMHO, of course

I do worry a bit more regarding the vision for future products. I
really hope someone with Slim Devices (or similar) background is taking
over and not someone from the Logitech side with a background of low
priced mass market consumer products. There is a risk the mass market
route is actually better economically for Logitech but it will probably
lead to very different products compared to what we have seen so far,
products where price is more important than sound quality.

However, until we have seen who is taking over, there is no need to

I pledge to disagree on this.
I believe that upcoming SD products need MORE not less mass market
appeal. For two reasons:

1. They need to come out of the techie corner. The whole architecture
needs a better integration UI wise or it will never be possible to sell
this to people who do not WANT to get involved. I have good hopes here
since from the discussions I'm seeing a lot of work is currently being

2. If you don't get out of the techie corner and create volume, I'm
afraid this will be pushed out of the market, after all this is too much
of a systems business to work in the niche alone

I don't think you have to become as cheap as to offer bad quality,
though. Actually, the Logitech mice I own do have a much better quality
appeal than some others, more expensive ones I accidentally came to own.

This is one of the key reasons that Dalmer-Benz bought Chrysler. Other
than the obvious easy access to Trucks/SUV and the Jeep line.

MB cars have a ton of advanced engineering, and they needed volume to
spread the engineering cost (NRE in the buzz). If they could have pushed
down their technology, such as yaw control, into the Chrysler cars, the
cost would become a trivial cost of the car, with the tiny volume that
MB has, the engineering cost is tens of thousands of dollars per car.

Sony did this well for decades, altho they have lost their edge in
recent years, IMHO.

VERY bad example.
You are right about the rationale yet they never even tried. ON
PURPOSE!!!
BTW, right now the volume is not that tiny anymore, they had a little
more than 1/3 of Chryslers sales (#, not $) upon the merger and are at
around 50% now.

But for SD this is even more important: They have to attract partners
like streaming services (which they are very good at right now) and 3rd
party accessory companies. And they will have to stand up against an
upcoming army of products supporting the rotten but simple and cheap
DLNA standard (actually it's not the standard that is rotten but the
support implementations, most of them).

You need volume for THAT.

This explanation is a bit mangled. The cost of developing the advanced
technology is called R+D. NRE (non recurring engineering) is more
typically used to described situations where technology is adapted to a
new home (like porting), a new use, or to a specific project or
customer's requirement. Adapting MB technology to work in a Chrysler
electronic environment would have been NRE. The cost to develop it was
R+D, which is a sunk cost before anything is sold.

Adding volume doesn't make it cheaper. It changes the percentages and
stats, but so too does any means of increasing the volume, whether it is
because of tech sharing or simply by raising prices. Or by charging more
for spare parts!

I agree with most of the comments of Erland and Pippin. And don't be
surprised if Dean and others move on before too long.

This explanation is a bit mangled. R+D NRE

The difference between NRE and RD is more of an accounting terminology
ontology/theology argument. Which term you want to use is cultural. And
irrelevant to the point that I was trying to make.

Adding volume doesn't make it cheaper.

Correct. But a for-profit company has to pay for it, no matter what you
label it. And its expensive. So when you have more sales/revenues using
the technology, the per-unit cost is lower.

Which is what I was trying to say.

The SB1 was a great geek device. One or two people can do it all. As you
get fancier, it takes more people in marketing, engineering, design, etc.

I'm more of a small company guy, don't fit well in mega corporations.

This is a natural evolution of companies

use mobile phones and twitter.

Also, DLNA is moving into that direction, too. UPnP always supported
it, just the devices don't.

The only problems with SC I see are:

And there are probably some non-compete provisions in there too,
otherwise, one might expect to see Sean move to video players (and maybe
he still can as video might just have been a gleam in the eye when
Logitech first purchased Slim Devices). Though reading Sean's comments
on the forum, he's always seemed to be an audio guy.

I don't disagree that the market hasn't become as large as some have
wished for. Though personally I think it's kind of cool having something
really special that everyone else doesn't have. Nonetheless, everyone
I've introduced to the SB lineup to has been sufficiently impressed, and
many have purchased product. At this point, I doubt if too many of them
would be willing to go back to just a radio. We've all read comments
about SB or Sonos, and the desire to dump particular product. I can't
recall ever reading that someone wants to dump the technology and go
back to FM radio.

Famous people have often uttered a phrase similar to I worked 20 years
and finally I'm an overnight success. The Internet digital revolution
is working it's way down that same path - Squeezebox included. Before
too long, all the major HiFi manufacturers will jump on the band wagon
too. It may be slow, but the train is coming.

[slim] Pandora One

2009-05-26 Thread lreinstein

I just got a notice about the new Pandora One service which apparently
streams at 192kbps.As a Pandora subscriber for Squeezebox, will I
need to pay an additional amount, or will it automatically convert to
this service?

Has anyone tried this yet?

Re: [slim] Updated Squeezebox products?

2009-05-26 Thread dsdreamer

It will be hard to support a mass market media streaming eco-system on
11g, as the bandwidth is getting to crowded and home users don't usually
do site surveys. A major source of performance complaints in these
forums are basic connectivity issues.

Sonos has a proprietary mesh-flavored approach to solving this, if I
understand correctly. Draft 802.11n in the 5GHz UN-II bands is probably
the nearest we have to a real solution, but none of the SD products
supports that, yet. Take a look at the range extension you can get from
.11n these days and apply that at 5GHz and you have given yourself scope
to provide really reliable wireless streaming.

My main point is that growth is not possible without reliable and
plentiful wireless bandwidth with a decent shot at whole house coverage.

[slim] How do I get album art to match the album

2009-05-26 Thread stack

When I select a song the album art does not match the album. The album
art is usually from an album in the same folder but it won't match up.
I've cleared the cache and the preferences file and reread everything
from scratch but it still is incorrect. Any help is appreciated.

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?

2009-05-26 Thread Andy8421

I can't imagaine we will see a transporter #2, the market for £1000
streaming network players is very small. While Meridian, Naim and others
can charge premium prices for streamers, it doesn't seem to fit the
Logitech biz model, and I am not sure the Logitech brand name would
support that level of pricing ex the loyal Slim following. The
transporter does give the rest of the Slim range audiophile credibility,
and there is value in that, but why design a new model?

The world has moved on in the 9 or so years that Slim have been around.
I do think the real challenge for logitech streaming media will be
video, and with products like the HDX1080 being given away (I don't know
how they make the box for the price they charge, let alone put anything
in it) it is going to be a tough battle.

Having said that, the Boom is clearly a quality product at a reasonable
price so perhaps there remains a growing market for audio only streaming
media.

IMHO.

as you say, establishing brand is important in this emerging market.
the engineering excellence of a product like the Transporter trickles
down into customer perception of entry models. i also don't think the
entire product needs to be re-engineered for a while, it is a great
product as is and probably just needs marginal updates to take advantage
of new technology and design out elements that part suppliers have
EOL'd.

this is an interesting topic, the whole roadmap and vision and future
product direction thing. without market share numbers it is hard to tell
whether the current product portfolio needs any updating or changing.

IMHO, for visually impaired, an audio user interface might be the way to
 go.
 - Navigate via voice input (limited vocabulary / multiple users was
 quite usable last I checked).
 - specific action in progress sounds
 - speech-to-text for listing albums, artists, track numbers, genres,
 etc.

I did some work in this area (access to Notes databases via phone /
audio only) in the mid-90's, and can tell you that most users think
about access differently without the instant random access available by
just moving your eyes around a display already up on a screen. So doing
something like this would be non-trivial.
And so far, there's been one request, and that person posted once and
disappeared. And it's not at all clear that this's what they might have
 wanted, anyway.
Maybe when car computers become more common, and there's a larger
audience who would like to control a SB in an eyes busy / hands busy
 situation...

2009-05-26 Thread erland

pablolie;426915 Wrote:

If they like to move into the mass market route they need to change
because all the products are way too geeky and technical today to fit in
this market section.

Moving into the mass market might be the only way for the product suite
to survive but it might also completely change what's important. Making
it more user friendly for non technical users is a win for everyone but
the mass market might also mean focusing on cheaper versions of the
product instead of focusing on versions with higher sound quality. After
all, most mass market users listen to MP3 (not lossless formats) and
doesn't care that much about sound quality as long as it's good enough.

However, Logitech hasn't destroyed other companies they have
purchased, look at the Harmony remote section which as far as I know
still creates new high end remote controls.

It will also be interesting to see how all this will affect this
community, moving into mass market means getting more commercial which
might result in that there isn't time to listen and work together with
the community as much as we have seen earlier. I've personally seen some
changes in this direction already during the last three years I've been
around. This might not be a bad thing for the products but the
development process will probably be pretty different from what we have
seen earlier.

Re: [slim] How do I get album art to match the album

2009-05-26 Thread tcutting

You need to provide more information.
How do you have your artwork stored? How is your music organized?
A typical arrangement is each album in its own directory (often
organized by Artist/Album). Within each album directory would be the
actual music track files, along with the album artwork, stored as
folder.jpg or cover.jpg. Or, the cover art could be saved as a tag
in the track. What type of files (mp3, flac, etc?)
Where do you have trouble viewing the correct artwork? Is it on the
Controller, or in a web browser? (both?) If it's a web browser, make
sure you do a full clear and rescan from Squeezecenter, and then clear
the BROWSER'S cache (I've had a lot of trouble with artwork displaying
incorrectly in the web browser, and it turned out that it was due to the
browser's cache).
