Doesn't the removed albums and tracks appear again when you use Music
Folder browsing ?
I thought the SBS scanner rescanned automatically when browsing a
folder with the browse Music Folder mechanism.

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad?

2010-01-27 Thread mortslim

The iPad is not for everyone. It is not a be all, do all machine. It
won't cook you your breakfast.

That being said,

it is basically a larger screen iPod Touch. The large screen benefits
for visual features: reading email, tweets, blogs, webpages, books,
magazines and newspapers; watching videos and movies. You have access
to youtube and can buy or rent movies and television shows.

As for multitasking, it can access your own music files for listening
to songs on your iTunes library while you use any other program (called
apps). I know it can do this because I can do this now on my iPod
Touch.

There are thousands of apps in many different categories. You need to
browse the iTunes app store to see if any fit your own interests. E.g.
if you like games, they should be more enjoyable on a bigger screen.

It can't fit in your pocket. So you are going to have to think twice
before taking it out of your house.

It can't do what a real laptop or desktop can do, namely access flash
based websites (although I understand that within a very short time, a
new web standard known as html5 will replace flash and be accessible by
the iphone, ipad and touch). It can't run photoshop or other
sophisticated programs. It probably can't do file and print sharing on
the local network. It's not clear if it can even connect to a networked
printer.

But, it does fit a niche for many. On the couch or a lounge chair or
in bed, if your focus is reading or watching or listening rather than
typing, then the iPad will be much more comfortable than a laptop. Less
bulky, lighter, easier to move around with and easier to see than a
small scren Touch.

I look forward to it.

No multitasking, no webcam, and I can only run App Store titles, even
if I buy the $829 version? How much money do you have to give Apple
before you get a computer you can actually control? I think a lot of us
hoped for a nice glass-screen multi-touch MacOS tablet that could also
maybe run iPhone apps, but this is just a supersized locked-down iPhone
that can't make phone calls or take pictures. Bleh.

I miss the old Apple [Computer] Inc. that built general purpose

Apple has produced a lot of innovative products over the years. That
momentum, and their understanding of how to create buzz, have made Ipods

likely to be a yawner. The reports I've seen so far suggest many view it
as under-spec'ed and over-priced. Time will tell.

Re: [slim] still no presentation-layer dedupe of albums

2010-01-27 Thread chroma

i appreciate that some of you are trying to be helpful.

let me clarify the requirements again:

- the filesystem must remain unmodified. no symlinks. no changing whats
there. it is a correct set of collections of collections. it is
correctly tagged.
- users want to be able to use the "browse music folder" and see
everything, as would be natural per point 1.
- some number of items are duplicates. these should not show up in a
browse or search, but should continue to show up in a directory browse.
- lets leave it to me to decide what should be hidden or not. i've
already done that as shown below. i do understand the logic applied to
determine album alignment, and i do not consider this a difficult
problem. in fact, i believe application of the following logic will be
generally useful for some people, and not harmful for others. its
alright if you think that my requirements are a corner case. i find this
hard to believe, but lets not belabor that now.
- once items are tagged to be hidden, they should not show up in any
search or browse views, except when viewing the real directory
structure.

i've written the following code to do what i want, albeit in a very
messy and expensive way:

Code:

  #!/usr/bin/python
  # presentation layer album dedupe

  import sys
  import MySQLdb
  from collections import defaultdict

  try:
  conn = MySQLdb.connect (host = "127.0.0.1",
  user = "root",
  passwd = "",
  port = 9092,
  db = "slimserver")
  except MySQLdb.Error, e:
  print "Error %d: %s" % (e.args[0], e.args[1])
  sys.exit (1)

  cursor = conn.cursor ()
  #AND (c1.year = c2.year OR c1.year = 0 OR c2.year = 0) \
  cursor.execute ("select C2.id, C2.titlesort, C2.contributor, C2.year,
SUM(tracks.filesize) \
  FROM albums as C1, albums as C2 \
  JOIN tracks WHERE C1.titlesort = C2.titlesort AND C1.contributor =
C2.contributor \
  AND (c1.year = c2.year OR c2.year = 0) \
  AND C1.id != C2.id AND tracks.album = c2.id \
  group by tracks.album order by titlesort")

  d = defaultdict(list)
  hidelist = []

  while (1):
  row = cursor.fetchone ()
  if row == None:
  break

  d[row[1]].append((row[4],row[0]))

  for k, v in d.items():
  if len(v) > 1:
  print "%s:" % k
  largest = 0
  selected = 0
  # first pass gets largest value
  for l, i in v:
  if largest < l:
  largest = l

  # next pass determines rows to hide
  for l, i in v:
  if l != largest:
  if not l:
  print "hide:   %d" % (i);
  else:
  print "hide:  %d %d" % (l, i)
  hidelist.append(i)
  else:
  if selected:
  # duplicate size, arbitrary selection
  print "hide: %d %d" % (l, i)
  hidelist.append(i)
  else:
  selected+=1
  print "keep: %d %d" % (l, i)

  print "hiding %d duplicate albums" % (len(hidelist))

  for i in hidelist:
  updatestr = "UPDATE albums SET invisible = 1 WHERE id = " + str(i)
  cursor.execute (updatestr)

  # hacky, but works for now: just blow away records of bad dupes in the db
  # everything above this line is fine. everything below this line should be
  # replaced by a server side SELECT exception rather than this expensive
  # set of deletes

  cursor.execute ("delete tracks.* from tracks LEFT JOIN albums on tracks.album
= albums.id \
  where albums.invisible = 1");
  cursor.execute ("delete from albums where albums.invisible = 1");

  cursor.close ()
  conn.commit ()
  conn.close ()

As I have an intermediate step wherein I flag each album as invisible
by adding a column to the table for albums i don't want, and could
easily add that column to tracks as well, it seems much more reasonable
to just select those out when doing searches/browses. That way I'm not
in a race with the scanner, and don't have to run expensive deletes.

I tried to add this logic in Slim::Control::Queries.pm in the following
places, but don't see it reflected in the SQL queries being passed to
the server, so I apparently have misplaced my strategy somewhat:

in albumsQuery:
$where->{'me.invisible'} = {'!=' => '1'};

in artistsQuery:
$where->{'me.invisible'} = {'!=' => '1'};
$where_va->{'me.invisible'} = {'!=' => '1'};

in titlesQuery:
$where->{'album.invisible'} = {'!=' => '1'};
push @{$attr->{'join'}}, 'album';

So, without any more of the telling me why I don't know what I actually
want, can someone kindly help me figure out where I should place
modifications with this intent so that my searches and browses run
against the db select out rows flagged as invisible?

Thanks.

[slim] Squeezebox Duet will play for 3 seconds then buffer

2010-01-27 Thread mikeemman

Hi All,

I am trying to diagnose an issue that I am having.

Squeezebox duet will play for a few seconds then cut out, saying its
buffering. It will then say it times out and cannot connect to the
library any more.

The firewall is off on my computer. My computer is about 2 years old.
There internet on occasion goes in and out (I have to refresh pages to
load them every once in a while). I also live in an apartment in NYC
with several wifi networks.

I have tried hardwiring my laptop to my router and just connecting the
receiver wirelessly. This does not seem to help.

I thought maybe I need a new laptop, maybe getting a dedicated netbook
for music.  Any suggestions?

I'll start paying attention to these competitors when a) the price comes
down below $1k for a multi-room setup, and b) they come up with software
that approaches the genius of Erland's suite of plugins...the closest
thing to the perfection I'm seeking in combining the dynamic nature of a

playlist through a simple rating system (including the ability to
automatically rate tracks).

So far I haven't seen it.

I find web ui performance fine too, although I do use Chrome for it.

The iPad is a rather bizarre looking thing, like they thought they'd
just supersize an iPhone. Not too sure if that's the right way forward.

As for no multi-tasking - I nearly fell off my chair. Agree with Pipin
that not multitasking has helped the iPhone succeed (although i have a
jailbroken one and use the Backgrounder app regularly), but if I buy an
iPad I would be reaching for it instead of the laptop as I sit on the
couch and if it can't multitask it is much less useful than it could be.

No, I don't use every feature (although I use most). But there is a
line, in my mind anyway. It would just feel pointless having a video
capable player in all the room which don't even have a TV. So know, for
the most part I would never use a video feature.

But I agree, a touch with HDMI and 1080p output would be nice. But I
would not want it to be a compromise. But I would still want audio only
devices for each room. Maybe I am looking at this from the wrong angle.
I was wrong before about a touch screen on the player and USB until I
got a touch!

I sort of like the Olive 2 thingy, but I'd never buy the Olive 4/4hd. I
want to get rid of boxes, not adding yet another "hi fi" sized box. The
Olive solution reminds me of the Beosound 5/Beomaster 5-setup: It's a
step back to separates (and in the case of the BS5 you don't even get
wireless, and there is no remote feedback on screen when using the

My server setup is somewhat good (Linux, 2.2Ghz dual-core mobile cpu,
3GB RAM, however it is connected via wireless), but that's only half the
story: good Javascript performance is also essential, and by all
accounts the CPU in the iPad is pretty remarkable.

I've got an 8 year old laptop that I sometimes use to access SBS, and
it's eminently usable.  It's a Pentium III-M with 512MB RAM, and I've
got it loaded with Knoppix and Chrome. If I had it loaded with a fully
patched XP and tried to load the Web UI in IE, I know I would have the

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad?

2010-01-27 Thread DoomWolf

I watched/listened to the whole launch event and iPeng was the first
thing that went through my mind when they started talking about
third-party apps. When iPeng finally gets the update to allow it to act
as a player, I can see putting the iPad into a dock that's connected to
some speakers, and having a nice big iPeng display that lets everyone
see what's playing.

I wonder what the best size will be for artwork? As I've been going
through my CDs to rip into FLAC, I've been getting the cover art into
500x500. I hope that's big enough because it's hard finding it bigger
than that on the internet.

I always want a 10" device for hi-res cover browsing.

A UI similar to AEON on XBMC would make a fantastic touch screen remote
for squeezebox.(http://www.aeonproject.com/)

I wish iPeng could someday support backdrop with horizontal text based
menu bar.

I think it would be neat if you put this in a dock someplace in your
listening area as a giant stationary controller with big buttons and
playback status that easily readable from far away. One problem though
is that I think a landscape orientation would be better suited for that.
>From what I saw, the docks hold the iPad in a portait orientation
only.

This brings to my mind those gigantic oversized universal remotes you
see in drug stores here in the US. Probably not the image that Apple
was shooting for :-).

I don't see how this thing would be advantageous over an iPod Touch or
iPhone as a portable controlling device.

Everything is supposed to run but will then likely just look like on
the iPhone.
There are a few things you HAVE to do differently on iPad (orientation
change support, iPeng 1.3 should have that anyway).

But there are a lot of things you WANT to do differently. Hey, what
about those ~50 tickets in iPeng track that talk about showing certain
stuff permanently that I stubbornly ignored so far. With the big screen
there should be quite a bit of stuff that can be much better on that
thing.

But honestly: _I_ find it too big. But that may be just me. Will try to
play around with the SDK, download servers are pretty down right now and
I have to find out which computer to spare since as usual you can't
develop for both versions on one machine :urgh:

Is a specialized app really necessary for something this size? Wouldn't
it be easier just to load up the normal web UI in Safari? I'm genuinely

I'm a Duet owner, and I've found that when I have a laptop and the

I'm sure they'll WORK, but I'll bet a lot of them will need to be
optimized for the larger display.

Now this may finalise the decision that I don't need a touch to treat
my addiction - with my existing players and an iPad/iPeng combination
the only realimportant capability the touch might provide is higher
audio resoltion - and my transporter provides this beautifully for
serious listening and my present server set up works beautifully (and
efficiently) so I don't need the USB or built-in server capabilities.
The bigger display on the iPad and the ability to use the best user
interface I've found for squeezeboxes is really attractive when will
it be available, will they beat Logitech to a shipping product I wonder?

audio that do the same for video as well as they both also play audio.
The 'cheaper one'
(http://www.hdtvsupply.com/1080p-high-definition-media-server.html)
appears not to support FLAC. The only real drawback I see is that they
use an external video display and that is probably because they were
designed for Video so it is assumed that one will hook it up to a video
display.

It would be extremely easy to build/include the same video
engine/decoder in a device just slightly larger then a Touch so that it
would have a display for when using just audio IE a Touch that does both
Audio and Video. So if this was designed the cost would not be the cost
of both devices added together due to the shared nature of the device
doing basically the same thing. Would I pay $379 for a Touch that did
streamed 1080P HDMI and 24/96 FLAC? I would.

Kids on the other hand will gladly watch the same Bob the Builder movie
a gazillion times (not only that, they often insist to do so), and kids
aren't exactly kind to DVDs so having a rip stored on a server could
make sense. Maybe I'm a kid too, since there are a few movies I enjoy
having instant access to.

Of course the database for video would need to have a different
structure than the music database, but it seems to me that designing a
video catalog should be a doddle compared to music. Most of the cheap
media players pouring out these days are almost entirely intended for
video with very poor support for music. They may handle a bunch of audio
file formats just fine, but browsing, building play lists, listening to
online services is severely limited or non existant. All the stuff that
makes SB stand out is missing. To at least briefly touch the topic of
this thread, with added support for video in the SB range it could
probably compete pretty well with those boxes based just on superior
support for music.

My reason for thinking video could be a useful addition is that I think
the SB architecture is pretty damn clever. The SBS is a formidable
backend and I think a similar concept would prove to be a good solution
for video also. And I'm guessing some of the chipsets used by late model
media players could run SqueezeOS which I think would provide a nice and
practical UI.

I just don't see the conflict here. Why would the sky fall down and the
world come to an end if SBS was extended to support video files and a
video player was added to the line of boxes?

[slim] SqueezeBox V2 name in SB Server

2010-01-27 Thread lemmy999

I have purchased a used V2 SqueezeBox with 130 firmware. It works great
except for the name. The previous owner had it named "Family Room". I
go in SqueezeBox Server and change the name and for a while it remembers
the name, but after a while (maybe after a power cycle? ) it reverts
back to "Family Room". Is this normal?

I don't know if this is the correct forum because there doesn't seem to
be a forum for SqueezeBox Classics or V2.

Indeed, and I somewhat agree with you in that there, for all practical

things.

However at the end of the day I don't think they are that different.
I'm a computer scientist, and I do have a server doing various things.
But I must admit that I would happily bin it if I could get the job done
by plug'n play devices. Though this is not going to happen tomorrow,
there is no reason it can/will not become reality in the forseeable
future.

Of course, this excludes the segment of those that likes tinkering for
the sake of tinkering. But there are plenty offerings for those
already.

IMO.

2010-01-27 Thread aubuti

this may be heretical, but at least it's simple: Take a smartphone with
wifi, tune in the desired program via hulu.com, nbc.com, or other site,
and then put the phone face down on the bedside table.

I can understand the OP's point that -It seems to me with all we can
access, Television Audio shouldn't be that big of a deal.- But even if
it's technologically trivial, I doubt there's a big market, and I
certainly don't see any of the providers falling over each other to
separate the audio stream from the video.

Obviously there are several markets, or at least market segments. For
my own use, I feel pretty much the same way as Pablo, and I imagine
that's true of a lot of current SB users. But a lot of people balk at
"having a computer on" to play music, ignoring the fact that NASs or
some of the devices in the OP *are* computers.

As a glimpse of one of the other market segments, last week I went to a
friend's housewarming party. A brand new, big, $2m house. And among the
technological items that impressed people was a little recess in the
kitchen wall where you could stick an iPod and it would play through the
in-ceiling speakers. I didn't notice if they were in other rooms of the
house, but they probably are. I asked my friend what brand the system
was, and he said "I have no idea. Whatever the contractor installed." He
and his wife are both computer savvy (though their PhDs are in
economics, so they lose a few points for that...), but they just wanted
an easy solution.

As for the $1k-and-up market that are in the OP, I think that Logitech
is choosing not to compete in this market. They'll keep selling the TP
for a while, but I don't see any successor to the TP under Logitech's
ownership.

Anyway, for others running into the same thing:

The "password" entry field on the MySB login page is NOT tagged as a

So be careful not to enter

Actually I think it -was- a one or two person job for slimdevices.com..
it's when Logitech corporate took the ordering on theselves that it got
screwed up. A combination of 'one size fits all' web design, lack of
communication with the product managers, chaos in their committees,
etc.

I don't think even basic 'shopping cart' functionality like in stock
status works.

Some things are better done by small groups.

Ordering from the old site was a pleasure, and had speedy shipping: if
I ordered something on Monday morning, it would be on the UPS truck that
afternoon and at my door in a day or two. I don't think the 'improved'
ordering process can do that at all.

(And my real fear is that it is just as chaotic for distributors trying
to order. Incomplete catalogs, invalid inventory status, etc.)

That and the usage model of video is entirely different than music.

There are very few movies that I have watched more than a dozen times.
I have many many albums that I have listened to dozens of times, and
will listen to dozens of times more.

Regardless of how cheap disk space is, and how fast bandwidth gets, I
really don't see a need to rip a DVD so I can stream it around the
house. It's easier to carry the DVD to the player I want to use.

Not to mention that I -do- watch 'extras' on DVD's, and on several CD's
(Icky Flix, or The Commercial DVD), the navigation is an integral part
of the experience.

Re: [slim] The competition is catching up and some surpassing Squeezebox...fast!

2010-01-27 Thread pablolie

what i don't get about many of these other offerings is that they want
me to replace my CD player with a new box - a server/player-combo-box
that stroes my music there. err, i have a perfectly good server in the
house, and i don't want a music server as a replacement for my CD player
- i want a very lightweight client.

the storage and computing is better done where it belongs - on a
computer. at better cost points, with better service- and
upgrade-ability.

so i think the basic architecture of some systems is flawed by trying
to be some sort of new appliance that replicates functionality that is
available elsewhere, and includes areas of expertise that are alien to
audio vendors (why on earth should they design a better computer than
established computer vendors)?

i think the SB fundamental architecture is the smart way to go.
especially since now with the Touch i get all the functionality of these
high end boxes in a better priced, more compact, and most likely equally
well sounding package (get an external DAC if you don't like the built
in DA conversion).

i think the flaw of the SB system for the regular user is still the CD
ripping process (but that will probably matter less and less as people
just download music), and the temperamental nature that SBS has
developed at times. since software seems to be the weak link (for rips
and troublefree operation) perhaps it means that Logitech needs to find
a way to monetize software some more so they get (a) some return on
development and (b) more customer lock in. but then the software *has*
to work in utterly reliable form, and upgrade fiascos and lapses in
operation then are no longer acceptable. and the linux version should
still be free. :-D

the Touch in my opinion is genius and points the way to the future. i
think the client had to become smarter from an interface point of view,
yet remains lightweight from a music path point of view. it is the best
of all worlds. Logitech has this nearly won: the interface is pretty,
the box very flexible, the cost point just right.

That is actually a brilliant Idea! It is a new option but I think
adding a new filter that will allow one to enter a date that is used as
'from' date would do the trick. I'll do some research on it and get back
on this.

Well you can always imagine a squeezebox 3 with an hdmi output, which
would act exactly like a SB3 when you play music, and be able to send
video through hdmi (and display menus and stuff on the TV) when you want
to watch a movie.
it would just need another item in the menu, something like "my movies"
right next to "my music".

I agree with this. I'm not sure how I would put a popcorn in my
bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. Even in my main living/listening room i
would hate to have to turn my plasma on just to change track. In fact
for a while I did with my HTPC, which I ditched in favour of the more
elegant Squeezebox 3. None of the the 'jack of all trades' streamers I
have used, while great, come close to being as competent an audio player
as the Squeezebox.

That said, I would not be adverse to a SqueezeVideo(tm) as long as the
video capable device complimented the current range and focus on
continuing to make the best music devices was not lost. But it would sit
next to my existng SB.

Argh. The day when Squeezebox goes video will probably be the day when I
start looking for a different system. Or at least freeze the current
state of my hard- and software and stop updating.

Video is a completely different concept. For example, you don't have
the typical artist / album / track relationship. Or would anybody want a
random mix of their favorite movie scenes?

The biggest drawback of all video-capable players I have come across is
that you -have to- hook them up to a TV, otherwise you don't even get a
menu to operate them because they have no display of their own. And I
surely don't want TV screens all over my flat.

IMHO the step away from the large text display to tiny graphics
displays was already a step in the wrong direction. Instead of enjoying
the cover art on the screen, people are asking "Why can't the Radio play
YouTube videos?" - the customer is never satisfied. :rolleyes:
