Re: [slim] Itunes Genius how can I have it in my sueezebox
Thanks guys. Music IP seems complicated. I am not techie enough for this.As for saving my Genius in itunes and than later (depending on my refresh setting) having it appear in my squeezebox, this is a step in the right direction, but it is not on the fly But what I ultimately want to do from my duet remote: when I listen to a song, invoke the Genius functionality and within seconds have a playlist created in squeezebox and available for play. This feature is simply magic when you have a large music base that is properly tagged. I love my duet, but I am now using my itouch with itunes just to get this functionality that I want badly in duet -- Jac Jac's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18298 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75367 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
Any improvement in sync should include a less insane handling of alarms. The situation now, if players are synced if any of them have an alarm then the alarm is sounding in all players and the now playing playlist gets wiped out and replaced by the alarm choice ? To begin with 1. A player should sound it's alarm alone and the rejoin the sync group zone or master ? if it was synced before. (wontfix bug :( 1) 2. A player should not wipe it's now playing activity it should resume to previous state after an alarm. (wontfix bug :( 2) 3. If you want "all house" alarm it should be possible to configure a master a zone or sync group with an alarm ? Of course all players should return to whatever they where doing also after this alarm, so you don't end up with all players synced after the alarm. -- Mnyb Main hifi: SB3 (soon to replaced by a Touch :) It is on preorder) Bedroom/Office: Boom Kitchen: Receiver (soon to be replaced by my SB3 and the SBR to be stuffed in a box in the attic ) I use a Controller various ir-remotes and a Eee-PC with squeezeplay to control this Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75381 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
I initially thought I was completely disinterested in the iPad. While I love my iPhone; I'm skeptical about such a closed platform for anything that starts approaching a laptop replacement. But after using my iPhone with iPeng and also as a remote for my Tivo HD (I hate needing to aim line-of-sight IR) I realized that I'd probably love an iPad as a sort of super-smart universal remote. Yeah I know there are a bunch of devices in that category (Harmony, etc) but this one would do more (real web browsing, etc in a pinch) and run best-of-breed options like iPeng. Now all I need is someone to come out with a good option for Wifi-to-IR conversion at a reasonable price with a great iPhone app to go alon. I see that a few options exist but I don't know if they meet this criteria. Back to the point. One thing that would be good for the use case I'm imagining would be quick switching between such remote apps. I don't know if the iPhone/iPad development platform allows this but for me it would be ideal to do it with hotlinks between apps rather than having to exit to the main app screen and pick there (requiring me to keep them sorted carefully for the right grouping, etc). -Jeff -- jdoering jdoering's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17482 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] 7.4.2 and SB1 not playing flac
I have recently upgraded to 7.4.2 on a Ubuntu 9.10 system from some version that used to be called SlimServer but don't recall the exact version. I have a SB1 and SB2. SB2 has no problems playing flac files since it has native support. The SB1 reports: "Problem: Cant open file for:" any flac or ogg. It plays MP3's fine though. Re: [slim] Is there a way...
SBS doesn't scan for players. A new player on the network sends out a broadcast packet looking for servers. Any and all servers respond. The player will then connect to the server (and remember the server it connected to...). If you're talking about the webui, it may get a bit confused depending on your browser so a page reload will force it to grab the current list of attached players, but it shouldn't need that. Sometimes browsers get confused, though. But again, the server does NOT scan looking for players: the players look for a server. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75421 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The fragility that I'm talking about has little to do with MSFT's network stack and everything to do with the typically lousy DHCP implementation on consumer level routers. The SB3/SBClassic (the name changed at some point, and the logo changed from SlimDevices to Logitech, but the hardware is the same) look fancier, more like a table-top picture frame, tilted back a bit, much like a picture frame as well. The SB3/SBClassic exists in a few colors: black, white and silver as I recall, though I think it eventually trimmed down to black only. It looks similar to a Touch, but the display is the same as an SB2 (VFD, not LCD). The wiki page shows a straight-on view of the SB3/Classic in the top right corner. Most important thing for me would be to get the synch between a *Duet* and a *Boom* working reliably. There are issues, every time I play theese two products synched, in 7.4.1. The problem here is that the default interface DOES have the feature yet it sucks so much that people simply don't know how to use it (with more than two players, at least). Re: [slim] Sonos is better than Squeezebox in Denmark...
Just going back to the sync issue for a second, I think life would be a lot easier if the paradigm of a sync Master and sync Slaves could be adopted. {starting from all boxes un-synced} 1) choose your sync master 2) on the other boxes, you always have 3 choices - no sync, sync slave, new sync master (ie it takes over, rather like the master browser on a LAN). Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
What Muele and Erland describe is pretty much how I use The Synchronizer plugin. I have several sync groups or zones defined, with a given player designated as the 'master' of each. Players can be in more than one sync group, which is especially useful for my Boom, which divides its time between the upstairs bedroom and the patio. When comparing the rest of the Squeezebox > line I really don't see where the price delta is all that dramatic. For me the price difference was dramatic and a big factor in my choice. Using list prices for comparison on the assumption that both are available a comparable street price discounts the Sonos solution was $1,135 more than the SqueezeBox setup, including the $9.99 for iPeng. Probably add another $99 to that - for a Zone Bridge. I could potentially wire in one of the BR100's to the router in my office, but would be a pain. My Squeeze set up is below in my sig field, the comparable Sonos set up would be 1 S5 (closest thing to the Boom), a Sonos Bundle 250 (don't need the ZP120, but the bundle is $48 cheaper than buying 2 ZP90's and a controller) and three ZP90's for a total list of $2,445. So yes - my price did include the SBR's which I found to be inexpensive, easy to setup and un-intrusive rather than cheap and frustrating. List price for my setup is $1,310. Already have a server that I was using for media, so that's a wash. Real world numbers, real world economics, not based on the assumption that existing products (SBR) are excluded. If the SBR isn't for you, than the pricing delta would only be $335 less than the Sonos. In my case I already had stereo kit everywhere except the kitchen, where I've put the Boom, so amplified players were undesirable. -- JeffHart "You know, I'm all for progress. Not so sure. In the case of comparing a one-zone-system 1:1 maybe not so much, but Sonos really makes most sense if you view it as a whole-house audio system and if you do that, you can go quite a bit cheaper - plus probabyly even more user friendly in some situations - with the SB due to the wider product range. If you really just want a number of rooms outfitted with displayless devices then you should really compare to the SBR. OK, the setup is more cumbersome but you do that ONCE. At least I did and I have absolutely no issues with my Receiver. But you can also add a cheap kitchen radio that has it's own controls, same for the bathroom. In a realistic scenario, if you compare to Sonos you'll add a number off expensive S5s plus you'd need additional controllers sice you have absolutely no UI whatsoever on any of the Sonos devices and then probably one controller is not enough for a whole house. OK, you can add iPods, but then you need WiFi (redundant!) again. I still believe for a realistic setup with 4-5 zones you end up with at least twice the cost for a Sonos system and that does even take additional cost for a bigger NAS/Server for SBs into account. Which doesn't change the fact that Sonos DOES do UI better than SB and DOES do setup better, IMHO. SBs have better functionality, though. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75341 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Hi-res support
So I've exhausted my limited amount of patience waiting for the Touch and am wondering what my options are for getting 24/96 support in conjunction with SBS. I'm not interested in spending $1500+ on a transporter so I'm looking to the software solutions. Will either Squeezeslave or Squeezeplay output bit perfect data? Will either play high-res material? I have a growing number of 24/88.2k and 24/96k files I want to play. I'd like an easy to use solution (I'm not a linux guy and hacking around with Alsa drivers last night with Vortexbox was enough to make me reconsider that approach). I'd like to build a small PC and stick a RME card in it and output via it's SPDIF port to my Grace DAC. I'll control everything with iPeng so I don't need a local display - This which would suggest SqueezeSlave, but I'm not sure how mature it is or how it will be supported going forward. Any comments or suggestions would be very helpful. [slim] Assigning fixed IP addresses to RADIO etc (NOT THE COMPUTER)
Hi there is there any way to assign fixed IP addresses to a Duet / Radio running on a LAN I'm often testing stuff remotely as well and with a router for example you often need to "Port Forward" to specific machines on your LAN. For example you want to access a HOME computer from work via RDP (Windows users) then you need to port forward port 3389 to a specific machine on your local LAN at home. Now if my computer is down and I've re-started the Squuezebox devices before re-booting the computer the squeezebox devices "Grab" the IP address that I've assigned to the computer with - predictable results as you can guess. Even if you assign a fixed IP address to your computer it doesn't stop the squeezebox devices grabbing IP addresses if you start them BEFORE your computer. It's not really convenient to ensure all the squeezebox devices are turned OFF before re-booting the computer. On a LAN with a lot of testing (I'm running 5 or 6 Virtual Machines as well on this LAN) I really would like the squeezebox devices to have their own IP addresses to avoid a lot of silly networking problems. BTW a lot of people having connectivity problems can usually solve these by switching off their squeezebox devices, restart their router, reboot the computer and THEN switch on the squeezebox devices. I have no need for social networking (what does it have to do with playing music?) and I just don't have the appetite for re-customizing SBS and relearning the Controller interface (the button changes I've read on the wiki just don't seem intuitive to me). I did have SuperDateTime running on the Boom and when it broke I simply disabled it (WeatherTime stills works fine on my SB3). -- DoomWolf DoomWolf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75333 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
