I'd seen other postings where people haven't been able to use Squeezeboxes when MySB thinks they are not with their previously registered owner. But ... the good news is that I found our username, and password. (I'd noted it in one of our SQ product guides, at the time. Which amazes me, now.) So we're up and running with the App again. [slim] Reinstalling Logi Controller App; lost password
I uninstalled the Logitech SQ controller app from my Android phone while away from home. Now back, and on re-installing it asks me for my MySqueezebox.Com password. Well, that was some years ago, and I've no idea, now. We don't use MySB, at all; all our devices use our own LMS. Is there any way to install the app and bypassing the MySB password step? I didn't want to register the app again with MySB because, if I create another (new) MySB password, might MySB then detect all our Squeezeboxes (we have several) and think they belong to someone else? I'd like to solve the problem, though, because I happen to use a slightly-older Android phone which runs the App, and I find it pretty good. [slim] Change DNS server on SBT (static IP)
I need to change the DNS resolver setting on our SB Touch. The SBT employs a static IP. Logging in with SSH I can see in /etc/network/interfaces the stanza with its: - static setting on its wlan0 interface, - IP address, - gateway address, and - the address it should use for DNS resolution. It is that last item, the address it uses for DNS, that I'd like to change. I don't seem to be able to find anything in the touch screen menus for changing network settings. Am I able to make this change using the SSH connection? I was wondering if there was a built-in editor that I could use and, if so, if anybody could say what editor it is, and I could look up the necessary commands to change the contents of the /etc/network/interfaces file. Presumably, such an edit would, then, survive any subsequent switch off and on sequences. Re: [slim] Classic FM [UK] - connects at 128, drops to 48
bpa, Just a feedback about the plug-in at the end of the programme while in 'Listen Again' mode. At the end of the 3 hour programme that we had on the Touch (Nick Bailey Hall of Fame Monday 28th) using the plug-in, the Touch seamlessly restarted the programme. The 'repeat' setting on the Touch wasn't set (nor set on the laptop browser's 'monitor' of the SBS). We'll probably listen to the final Hall of Fame programme (another 3 hours) later today so we'll check again. It's not a problem because it doesn't interfere with the programme and, actually, it is then 'Listening -Again-' so maybe it feels it ought to do that! Just thanks, again, bpa; it's a really useful plug-in for Classic FM. Install ClassicFM v2 as per any othe rplugin. > http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/classicfm-repo.xml Extraordinary. There are some very clever people around this forum, very supportive, and unsparing of their time. Added the repository, restarted SBS, and Classic FM v2 automatically appeared in the list of 'Active' plug-ins, with a tick in its checkbox. So, on installation, it seems to find the old plug-in, remove it, and install itself. Checked its 'settings' and 128kbps MP3 is ticked. Switched on the SB Touch, selected - Internet Radio - Classic FM v2 - Listen again - Nick Bailey's Hall of Fame transmission from Monday Saint Saens Organ Symphony. A perfect baptism for the plug-in. Simply brilliant. The family think so, too. So, the feedback here is that installation and operation seem ok. I did fail to get Squeezeplay (on W Vista) to work with it - that was my first test while I was still at my desk. (But Squeezeplay here uses a much slower downlink than the Touch and SBS do (512kbps, not normally used for Internet Radio) so it may actually have been working, but simply failing to receive its data promptly enough. Squeezeplay just displayed 'Connecting' for around 4 mins. I'll check that again in the morning, when that link is usually giving faster response times, it's a pretty poor response right now so I don't think it means there's an issue with Squeezeplay and the plug-in.) Skipping would be good especially on long programmes such as Classic FM. Skipping is handy if we're interrupted and, perhaps, have to stop listening and switch off. Later, or the next day, it would be good to skip through to the start again of the piece, which could easily be 90 mins or so after the beginning of the programme and would save waiting for an hour or so to pass before being able to begin to hear the piece again. Are you thinking that skipping might be possible on the 128MP3 Listen Again stream? On live broadcasts, ClassicFM's website shows what specific piece is playing. Do you think that information is also encoded in the (live) stream? Or is the 'What's Playing' information only sort of 'This is Nick Bailey on Classic FM', ie, static throughout the programme? Tides ebb, and flow, but it's risen fast, today. regards, Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105385 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Apologies for that. And, please, don't trouble to try anything else this evening. I have unearthed an old laptop, put a current OS on it and will run it on a network segment that doesn't reach the main network in the house. I'll add Firefox to that, and install a current Flash plug-in, and then just plug the laptop's headphone output into the HiFi (that was the first way I ever tried the SQ system, using Squeezeplay; I got hooked!). Bypassing SBS and the SBT, for now, just so that I can settle the family and make sure they get their programme on Tuesday. Just a couple of comments on what you have said. The current webplayer from ClassicFM does still use flash, as of today. Interesting that the SBS plug-in is based on Triode's earlier iPlayer - if that used flash, which is how I read your note, then I guess that would enable 'music', but the plug-in isn't getting that far. It has first to list the programmes from the previous 7 days and let the user select which one hear; it is this phase where the plug-in shows 'Empty' (on Squeezeplay - I can't check on the Touch because it's in use). You mention the plug-in, and Google. On the plug-ins page in SBS settings, I see that I have this repository enabled: http://triodeplugins.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/testrepo.xml as well as, incidentally, http://bpaplugins.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/repo-short.xml I'll post a message on the 3rd party forum, and see if mrw pops up. It would be good to be able to use the CFM plug-in, if it were possible, because it plays through a decent system, hassle-free. Very many thanks, and again sorry to have distracted you from the weekend. I can now solve my immediate CFM listen again problem, using a separate laptop, and flash. regards, Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105385 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I see that the ClassicFM plug-in, which I have managed to get working as I mentioned above, also uses that media-ice URL. bpa, while on ClassicFM, the plug-in has an entry for 'listen again', but the player comes up with 'Empty'. [The family are out tomorrow and wanted to listen to the final day's Hall of Fame, being broadcast tomorrow, on the next day, instead.] I've tried just with a web browser on a linux PC. Using Firefox, the listen again player (which Classic FM describe as 'Listen on Demand'), that they use needs scripts from 'thisisglobal.com' and 'radioplayer.co.uk' (listening 'live' also uses scripts from musicradio.com', which it would given your finding of the link above). I have enabled those scripts in Firefox but, sadly, the CFM webplayer also needs Flash, but that's a step too far for our machines (due to our choosing to limit our exposure to security risks). Do you know of a 'favourite' link I could use instead for CFM's listen again? I haven't implemented frozzers' sugestion of TuneIn yet - I didn't want to disrupt the server while folk are enjoying the live broadcast. I'll go looking around for it, because it will be useful for other stations, as well. I've also found why the Classic FM plug-in wasn't working, and have fixed the settings - so I've solved my immediate problem and am getting Classic FM at 128, constantly. The checkbox for 'Classic FM live Direct stream - MP3 128kbs' wasn't 'ticked'. It may have been that way since installation, a year or so ago. And, for anyone else reading, the other entry in the settings, for (just) 'Classic FM live' doesn't seem to function at all, here. One slightly odd effect of using the Classic FM plug-in is that the logo displayed on the Touch is just a Classic FM brand symbol whereas, when using the Internet Search method that I posted, though that only gives me 48kbps, it seemed to pick up the particular programme logo to display it. Since we don't look at the SBT while it's playing, the logo doesn't matter to us, but I note this in case anyone else comes back to this thread. [slim] Classic FM [UK] - connects at 128, drops to 48
Just listening to Classic FM's Easter weekend broadcast - they have a 'Top 300' sequence where they play the various pieces that were offered as favourites by listeners. 'Hall of Fame', is the broadcast; it runs for 4 days. Anyway, the problem I'm getting is that the link I use connects at 128kbps CBR then immediately drops to 48kbps CBR. SB Touch is the device, using in-building SBS. Touch is over WiFi, SBS is wired, fixed IPs everywhere. The broadband downlink is running at 1.5 Mbps, up at around 448 kbps, so there isn't an (obvious) transmission problem. May ask about how other folks are connecting to Classic FM in UK? We're not using the Classic FM plug-in, because it's never seemed to work for us. The connection we're using is: 1 Select 'Internet Radio' 2 Select 'Search' 3 Enter 'classic fm' 4 Click on the top search result. (Connects at 128k but immediately drops to 48k) I'm wondering if I'm using an incorrect link. How do others connect to Classic FM, and is anybody getting Classic FM at 128? Grateful to hear of the correct link. regards, Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105385 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Oh, that's interesting. That was what I had tried to do, Kid3 gave me the option to export in CSV, and so it did. But - and this what prevented the procedure working - the CSV file did not contain the filenames. So, on importing (by implication, to the flac files), Kid3 didn't know where to put the tags. Re: [slim] Tagged WAV files: Any way to convert to FLAC, and retain tag info?
Thanks for the suggestions of foobar, dbpoweramp, and mp3tag. I wasn't familiar wih any of those and the versions I found were for Windows. I do have a Windows machine but it's a little easier to reach the files if I use an application on the (Linux) Squeezebox server. In the end I loaded each WAV file into Audacity, and 'export'ed the audio as flac. At that stage, I could have typed in the 'album' tags just the once, Audacity can save metadata and it can use the saved metadata again on the next file; I didn't do that, but my recommendation now, to anyone else, would be to do that, actually. What I had done was to export all the WAV tags using kid3's 'export album' feature. That produced a good-looking, highly structured, text file that even a spreadsheet could open and get each tag in the correct field; I was impressed. This is going to be easy, I thought, I'll convert the files to flac in Audacity, and then just use kid3's 'import album' feature to read the tags from its saved text file and insert them into the flac files. Life isn't straightforward, though; this turned out not to work. In the end, I had the untagged flac files, in the same directory as the tagged WAV files, and then just used kid3 to show the WAV tags, click on 'copy', select the equivalemt flac file, click on 'paste'. I just followed that sequence file by file. I've noted the utilities puddletag and eyed3, which I think are suggested in a linux context. Neither is on the machine running SBS, and I'll check those out to see if they'll be of help next time. [slim] Tagged WAV files: Any way to convert to FLAC, and retain tag info?
I have some WAV files which I have tagged on Linux, using Kid3-QT, and I've discovered that SBS cannot read the tags. There are several past threads mentioning that WAV files can be tagged but few applications can read them; SBS can read WAV tags if they are in one of the two common formats employed, but I think Kid3-QT has probably used the format SBS cannot read. I'd like to convert the files to flac, not just to save a lot of space, but mainly because flac has a standardised tagging format, which SBS handles fine. I thought I could use Audacity but - unfortunately - Audacity cannot read these tags, either. I could simply retype the tags, in Audacity, and save as flac, but as there are quite a few files I wondered whether there was any other utility that would both convert the WAV to flac, and retain/insert the tagged info into the flac files. [SBS is v 7.5, running on Linux.] Grateful for any suggestions. [slim] Procol Harum concert on BBC R2, Friday evening, 8pm
Assuming that the other person reading the forum also enjoys Procol Harum, a quick post to say that the BBC is broadcasting a Procol Harum concert tomorrow evening, Friday. It's on Radio 2 and I'm guessing the Listen Live feature of the iPlayer plug-in on LMS will play the broadcast. Though I had some CDs of their music, I never had the CD they made with (I think) Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, but I think I've heard what I consider to be one of their best tracks, A Salty Dog, from it. This concert is with a large BBC orchestra and the recording is, apparently, of the UK performance of a tour that has been given elsewhere in the past few months. The programme page is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04njsk5 and the broadcast is at 20: 00 GMT (2000z). Should be good. Very interesting thoughts. (I don't know anything about DACs and today's amps - we only have traditional analogue kit, actually just integrated miniHiFi systems with various analogue inputs.) I think you're saying that most analogue conventional amps are ok, but not the multichannel kit (such as the OP's Denon?). I've been thinking about the Harmon Kardon range - in particular the stereo items such as http://uk.harmankardon.com/harman-kardon-product-detail-uk/hk-3490.html It's a very big box, though. This has digital in (co-ax, and optical - are those a 'standard', do you think, so that the Squeezebox digital outputs would 'just work' into these) and presumably has a DAC and, I guess reasonable conventional amps? Do you feel that this kind of kit has better 2-channel performance than the sort of AV equipment that you were worried about? And, the same question as the OP raised, external DAC could be placed between an SQbox and this amp, so only using the amp as an analogue device? In your view, using analogue power stages is ok from the point of view of next step up in quality, (or not)? Again, thanks for the basic but very useful (to me, too) thread regards, Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96780 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

But I didn't download it, nor can I now find the link. I remember being slightly surprised that a circuit design was in the public domain, and assumed it was a consequence of the IPR regime under which it had first been developed. The DAC pinout should be widely available, so you should find some points to do a basic test. Have you tried posting in the DIY section? I'd like to use an Android mobile in some manner similar to Pippin's suggestions for i-Things, and excluding headphone-out sources. Converting from the MHL lead to HDMI isn't difficult. At least 2 solutions: (i) Samsung/Others: standard MHL -> HDMI lead; (I'm note sure how to get an HDMI signal into either (a) our analogue in/out traditional HiFi system, or (b) an external DAC. Apart from anything else, as I understand it, HDMI audio output 'depends' on what the receiving HDMI device claims that 'it' is, and what audio transmission scheme 'it' requires.) (ii) Hacked MHL/USB lead as here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395173&page=2&styleid=16 But, presumably, the audio signals shown in the sketch are still digital-something, at this point. I've done that, backed the music up, etc. But, a lot of mine is .ogg - because SB plays ogg - but most other systems I've checked don't. I can see a time coming when those other systems on the market won't play flac, either, which is another coding I've commonly used. Fair enough, if there's no 'demand', in the future, which would enable the cost of that option to be recovered from hardware purchasers. But this does concern me - slightly - if the SB hardware lines were to close. Of course, everything could be transcoded to different formats - though retaining the tags is a bit trickier and would be an issue on a large collection - but of more concern is that transcoding lossy formats would result in further degradation. I too have high confidence - but only as long as the hardware lasts. What is the asset life of SB kit? Maybe 10-12 years, for the box, but slightly less - judging by some fairly regularly-occurring posts - for the power-pack. I don't think we're there, yet, though. I also ran faad with -i but nothing more was printed, and it hung in the same way. But I doubt that this file is 'anything special'; my guess is that, since LMS 7.7 works fine with m4a, that what I'm doing here isn't quite compatible with the patches used for Squeezebox. Hadn't done so, Gary, because (i) the system just runs very well, and (ii) upgrades are a little disruptive with plug-ins - some of the extras we use have quite different versions for the later releases. Apart from, as well, the time it takes, and not being entirely sure whether you had to remove the old, etc, so researching the steps, safeguarding a fallback strategy; upgrading is a 'project' in itself, really, in the context that the existing installation is working so well and giving the family good service. I just trust it. But I can see that upgrading may be necessary, especially if sampler and publicity material is going to be released in the future in m4a files. [slim] M4a (sorry)
First: apologies. There have been countless posts dealing with m4a issues, but the forum search isn't recognising 'm4a' (or mp4). Does anyone still have a link to a (the?) thread describing how to play m4a files? Received an m4a file from a performer's website sign-up, and SBS recognises it as an m4a file, recognises performer name, song title, picture, and the lyrics (which surprised me) and reports the file as being: File format: mp4 Bitrate: 256kbps CBR (Converted to 705.6kbps ABR) Sample size: 16 bit But my SBR plays no sound - though its LED is showing bright white (it is receiving) and the SBS web UI shows the track being played - ie, the time-bar moves onwards. In SBS, the file type settings for MP4 are: AAC - Native FLAC - faad/flac MP3 - faad/lame PCM - faad Neither, incidentally, does Squeezeplay play the track, on a (wired) windows PC. I think I recall seeing something about inserting a transcode in a convert.conf file in previous threads. Could anyone point me to a relevant thread or, maybe, some instructions? Triode, thanks for the advice. The R3 broadcast (according to the schedule) also includes an additional piece of music which was not included in the Christmas Eve live broadcast, making it even better 'value'. Are all the BBC radio 'listen again' streams 320kbps, or are only the R3 programs played at 320 on 'listen again'? regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92544 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] "Carols froms King's" BBC R4 HD
The "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/events/chapel-services/nine-lessons.html is broadcast today at 3pm GMT on BBC's R4: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/nine-lessons-and-carols/ and this will be broadcast in HD (320kbps), as well. While I can get R4 at 128 AAC using Triode's iPlayer plug-in, I don't seem to see any HD listings in the 'station list' under 'listen live'. Should I be able to see an HD variant of the program, or does that not show up until the broadcast starts? I'm using version 1.1.21 of the iPlayer plugin. (I've a secondary problem, too; for some reason I cannot see the complete plug-in list, including all the 3rd party plug-ins, and neither can I see whether - for example - I ought to update the iPlayer plug-in to receive the HD stream. I must have done something silly, could anyone point me to how I display 'all' the plug-ins available, and be able to check for plug-in updates?) regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92544 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm having limited success with Galaxy S2 phone. Upsides are: Seems just about the right size to hold, use, or put to one side on a coffee table. Battery life actually isn't too bad, if you switch off 3G operation (otherwise battery life is an issue); I manage 2 - 4 days between recharges with intermittent use on WiFi. Used SqueezeDroid, and normal SBS web UI on it, controlling two SBRs. Haven't tried SQ-commander because I haven't registered with Google. Haven't tried the Logitech app because I don't want to register with My Squeezebox . Com, either . Downsides are: Very expensive, even on a contract (you either buy it, or pay during the contract life). It's an unnecessarily rich phone for this type of use - it has GPS stuff etc, as well as countless applications most of which I haven't used. Web UI is too small on the screen; although you can expand the view, you then lose the 'positional' context, so it's not the best way to use the phone. SqueezeDroid works, but I seemed to get a long list of tracks which I found difficult to navigate, and I hit the problem that if you select one track to play, the whole album gets played. (There was another thread about this a while ago and I've got to check what the solution to that was.) So I tend to use the Web UI, and expand the screen to make selections etc. It's a good question, though. I'm also interested in getting a less-complex Android phone which might be good as a remote - as well as occasional browsing etc - but in this form factor; I like the hand-holdable size, and the fact that it doesn't take a lot of space if you put it down on a small table or shelf. (A useability aspect, really.) Well worth looking at, and shows a commitment to SQ and to music streaming. Her focus, rightly in my view, is on music streaming - from the internet, for now, with SQ Radio - though I think she'll need to move up to a SQ radio device that can dock an iPhone or Android phone. (Tech detail: docking not strictly necessary since device could stream over WiFi or BT, but there will be battery issues for the main user, and a dock could provide power and recharge.) But this focus on music streaming is correct because it is the high-volume future, and where Logitech is likely to do well. She does show a laptop also streaming to the SQ radio, but she doesn't mention the more substantial stereo use cases. But the Touch is a good product, so - hopefully - she'll activate or re-activate its marketing. One possibility she might think about is upgrading the radio product to also double as the higher-end audio source, a sort of combined radio/touch/Android dock. The commercial reason for this is that Logitech is aware that people 'trade-up' and the CEO said he needs the company to have products that people can move on to; this could be a good fit, I think. Her slides look positive, and that Andy feels confident enough to voice the thoughts that he has, does suggest that Logitech is aware of the potential of SQ kit in music streaming. I hope the team succeed. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91532 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] WiFi performance limits with sync'd players
Our WiFi system became overloaded while playing flac files to two sync'd players - SB Receivers, in this case. I'd added to the problem (I think) by recording the flac files, from analogue sources, using a 24 bit depth. The topic has been much visited in recent weeks/months, in the context of looking for solutions, but the threads where it's been raised have produced some interesting 'numbers'. It's the numbers I'd like to think about (the solutions have been well-aired). The 24 bit flac files (44k sample rate) are showing bit rates which vary between 1.2Mbps to 1.4Mbps. These seem high compared with, for example, a posting in the (excellent) 'big party' thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=657983&postcount=15 suggesting that 16 bit 44k PCM is 1.4Mbps (presumably that's stereo, is it?). It seemed to me that flac isn't compressing PCM by much. (Well, maybe saving 8 bits per 24 bits isn't too bad, really?) Our flac files at 1.4 Mbps are taking 2 x 1.4 Mbps (ie, 2.8 Mbps) for transmission to two sync'd players and, in our case where we use a repeated signal because of line of 'sight' issues, actually 2 x 2.8 over the WiFi channel, roughly 5.6 Mbps. Adding 10% or so for IP overhead such as framing, error checking, acknowledgment, whatever, we're over 6 Mbps. Even using Wireless-G, this seems too demanding for our installation. There is one question I'd like to ask. I used Audacity to capture these analogue sources and save them to flac. Audacity has 'options' under its flac filesave menu, where you can select the 'quality' (best to worst), which confuses me a little. Since flac is lossless, I assume there isn't a 'good' or 'bad' in a fidelity or perfection sense; I assume the 'best' or 'worst' is a measure of the aggression of the space saving (with an implication for the ultimate decoder, the SBR in our case). Does anyone know if that is the case? Does anyone suffer a fidelity loss, after all, with these Audacity settings? And one query about SBS helping us out. We're getting some work done to install a wired network - it'll take a little time, though. Meanwhile, I looked at SBS settings to se if it would temporarily transcode flac down to, say, MP3, but MP3 is greyed out in settings. Can anyone think of any way to transcode flac in SBS so that a lossy format is transmitted to our SBRs, for the time being? regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91448 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Not familiar with Joggler, or with Natty. Wonder whether Squeezeslave will run with the speakers for you? If so, you could use Squeezeplay as the controller (if you needed a device-based controller). Failing that, would VLC run for you? If so, you could ask VLC to access 'stream.mp3', though I think SBS won't forward radio streams to VLC (gives a message such as 'cannot do this with http players'). Equally perhaps xbmc can be fed from 'stream.mp3' (I've not used xbmc, so unsure). Really, what I'm suggesting is try a player other than Squeezeplay and see whether they use the USB speakers correctly while streaming from SBS. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91367 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Ive done some tests and noticed this in terms of playback of various types of files: Hotel California CD -> track by track rip -> has audible gaps when listening Everly Bros compilation CD -> track by track rip -> has gaps while listening Analogue sourced tracks -> track by track capture without silence gaps -> no gaps while listening Then I made a handbuilt playlist, analogue track then CD track then analogue then CD, etc, and heard: (a) No gap between analogue track followed by CD track, then (b) Very short gap between CD track followed by analogue, then (c) No gap between analogue track followed by CD track, then (d) Very, very short gap between CD track followed by analogue I conclude from this, and from your post, that the 'index 0' gap has been appended to the end of the previous track, though I am not sure this has happened 'every' time. Maybe over the weekend I can run some of these tracks through audacity and see just what 'silence' there is, and where. I've looked again at the crip website ( http://bach.dynet.com/crip/ ) and I notice that there are settings for dealing with 'silence' so I think I need to be more specific about that when I'm capturing from CDs (I created those files when we'd just first had SBS and probably didn't fully understand why the gap might be important). We purposely do track-by-track captures so that specific movements of a longer work can be played, if we want. On classical 'compilation' CDs - several different works - then track-by-track labelling and access is vital. >From the point of view of the analogue captures, I think I'd like to add 3 seconds silence to the start of each of the files. The problem is that when playing individual tracks, say 1812 Overture, followed by Romeo & Juliet, at present there is no gap at all between the end of the sound of the first piece, and the beginning of the sound of the second piece. Whereas, on a CD, there is a gap of, say, 3 or 4 seconds (I've never measured it) between the pieces. And, in a concert - even when conducted by the composer, there is a gap between a piece's movements, and certainly between pieces themselves. It is the 'gap' that the composer intended, and that the CD player exhibits, that I am trying to recapture. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91049 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Gapped playback? (playback with gaps between tracks)
Our setup uses SBS, and SBRs. Everything is working fine. The music - whether an album or a hand-built playlist - plays back without gaps between the tracks. We'd prefer to have a short gap between tracks so I looked through SBS settings to see if this was possible. I couldn't find anything. (I've looked several times.) The nearest I got to was something named 'crossfade' but I didn't really want to fade anything. This would be particularly good for us when listening to classical pieces, where we find that a short gap between movements or items can often be welcome. [slim] Streaming: monthly capacity usage
I've been playing with some numbers to see what streaming uses, in terms of monthly usage. If anyone's interested, I've created a small spreadsheet which gives a rough idea of how much of a monthly limit regular streaming might use. Actually, I got a bit of a shock. Even only streaming 4 hours a day, at 128k, would use approximately 8GB per month. That is a significant proportion of a 10GB service, for example (and I'd previously measured some web browsing at around 1GB per month, per person, so 10GB doesn't go far, really), and certainly exceeds a typical 3G/mobile service contract such as I've variously seen at 1GB or 3GB monthly. I've attached the spreadsheet; there are two versions in the zip, one is LibreOffice compatible (.ods) and the other is Excel compatible (.xls). 3G/mobile carriers include 'upstream' traffic in the loading calculation, and so do some (not all) fixed-line providers, so there is a facility in the sheet to select whether upstream loading should be Included, or Excluded. Other inputs (all the inputs are shaded 'blue') are available for stream rate, and (average) hours per day of streaming. There are a couple of other assumptions for the IP overhead (I've set this to 15% but you can change it) and for the upstream loading (which I set to 5% but, again, you can change it). And any corrections would be very welcome, by the way. regards, Atlantic +---+ |Filename: StreamingCapsV1.zip | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=12404| +---+ -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89979 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I've had a similar problem lately, which was due to an incorrect setting on one of our proxy servers. But, if I understand the SQ protocol correctly, I can imagine a couple of problems which could cause this: IF the radio station required the SBS to transcode for the player, THEN if the computer running SBS (not SBS itself, but the underlying computer software system, such as Windows, or Linux) did not have a 'gateway' to the internet (there's a network field for this), or did not use a working DNS server (there's a network field for this, as well), then I think you would find that those radio stations would not play. If the SBS was set to use a proxy server (Advanced, Network, Proxy) AND the proxy server either did not have a gateway to the internet, or did not have a correct DNS server entry (that is what happened to me recently after a power outage upset the proxy server here), then I think you would find that no radio stations would play. There may well be other possible reasons. If you can, (a) check the Gateway, and DNS settings on the computer running SBS, and even check whether it can reach the internet for browsing, etc (although that's not a perfect test because browsers can be set up to use a proxy which bypasses the gateway setting anyway). (b) check whether SBS is set up to use a proxy and, if so, check whether the Gateway and DNS settings are correct on the proxy server [ignore this if SBS is not using a proxy server]. (c) if browsing works, check if the browser is using a proxy server because, if it is, SBS may need to do so, as well. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88698 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Connection reset by local host....
I've had this message when the 'Gateway' field in a router was not set correctly. What is probably happening is that the 'garden' SB cannot reach the internet because either: (a) the SB hasn't got a valid 'gateway' entry, or (b) the 'garden wifi router' hasn't got a valid gateway (it needs one if you have genuinely set it as a router and not a simple 'access point, AP') or (c) the main router is not giving a gateway field to the 'garden router' or, if it is on the same network segment, to the 'garden SB' (this is unlikely, actually, because the other SB seems to work ok) There are a variety of reasons why the gateway may be missing. Simplest solution would be to (1) configure the 'garden wifi router' as an 'AP, accesspoint' (this puts the garden SB onto the same segment as the other SB), AND (2) configure the 'garden SB' in the same manner as the main SB if they take 'DHCP', or configure it with fixed IP if your other SB is configured as fixed IP (give it a different IP but the same rest of the settings such as gateway, DNS, etc). If this has lost you, apologies, and just post back how you have set up the 'garden wifi router' and we'll take it from there. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88643 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Went thru the whole reboot setup again > everything works fine except the radio balky doesn't want to play > anything.Any more ideas? Fred Hmmm. Sorry to hear, f-fred, that things are still not right. What you describe could be more than a problem of double IPs; it may be that there is still some other problem - which may, perhaps, even have led to the double IP symptom in the first place. Fred, I'm not a squeezebox expert, I'm just reasonably comfortable with networking aspects; I only have receivers, but I do use them on wireless. We're going to need some more help from others, especially people better informed on Touch and on Radio. Since you repeated the start up sequence, I think we can make an assumption that the underlying IPs are ok - nothing has complained about duplicates. Problems lie elsewhere. I think there might be wifi problems, and I think another poster's suggestion of resetting the Radio might be needed. In general, I prefer not to do that because any 'personal' settings you have entered will be lost. But, if there aren't any personal settings, or you don't mind losing them, then restting the Radio might be a good move. If you hadn't said anything about the Touch, I would have immediately suspected the possibility of interference on WiFi. There may still be interference, affecting the Radio (and I want to ask about that in a moment), but that doesn't explain why the Touch indicated some strange - to you - status, but I can't deduce anything from that because I don't know what it should be showing in these states when your laptop is off, and just restarted, etc. Could someone else comment on what the Touch might be doing? Fred, could you recap exactly what your setup is, so that we can understand the service delivery? I think you have: Router, with ethernet and wifi Do you have any switches or hubs in the network, with other devices connected to them? Laptop, with ethernet(?), and running SBS server(?) Do you have any other computers or devices connected to the router? Touch, connected to the router via ethernet Radio, connected via wifi How far is the Radio from the router? What are any intervening walls, floors, constructed with? What does the SBS system say that the received signal strength on the Radio is? What are the working states that you have, for example: Can the laptop reach internet ok? Can it do so when Touch is switched on? Can it do so when Touch and Radio are switched on? When only laptop and Touch are on, can Touch play from my music? When only laptop and Touch are on, can Touch play from mysqueezebox.com? Now, thinking about the possible wifi interference that might lie behind the Radio problems, what you describe is consistent with a new, recent, source of interference, such as a neighbour wifi signal, or even a new domestic equipment, creating some interference. Have you installed a new microwave, for example, or anything, somewhere near the Radio? Thinking about the wireless activity in the area, is the router or Radio within, say, 50 metres of any other premises (above, below, sideways, whatever)? If not, then wifi interference is unlikely, and the problem will lie elsewhere. Does the laptop have wifi? Is it active and connected to anything, for example, to your router, or to another external wifi network (by accident, perhaps)? If your laptop is (normally) connected with ethernet, make sure that the wifi system on the laptop is switched OFF, and redo the setup, and see if the problems go away. Are you using Bluetooth on the laptop? How many cell phones are there near the radio, that have bluetooth active? Does the problem go away if the cell phones are switched off? Fred, sorry not to be able to conjure an instant solution, but some extra circumstantial info will help us solve it. I'm sorry it seems such a lot of questions, but there are a number of possible causes of which we'll be able to rule some out. And I do hope that folks knowledgeable about the Touch and Radio systems can chime in, here. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88522 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Help IP Address Problems
Almost there, then. The radio - for some reason - is still using the same IP as something else. So, here's what to do. Basically, repeat but this time plug the radio in first, so that it gets its IP and the router won't give that IP to something else. (Hopefully, unless there is a fixed IP somewhere, but we can come to that later.) Follow these steps. Turn everything off, including your laptop or any other computers you have. Count to 100. Turn on the router. Count to 100. Turn on the radio - plug it into ethernet or use wireless - whichever you are using. Count to 50. Ignore any sqwaks or complaints from the radio, for now. Turn on the laptop. Let it start up, wait till it settles then see if internet is working. If internet isn't working at this stage, stop, and post back, because we'll have to do more digging with the laptop etc. If internet does work, then switch on the other SQ devices, one by one, counting to 50 in between. Post back and let us know what happened. We'll get there, just hang in. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88522 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Well, no-one will be more surprised than me, but I managed to solve the problem. There are two feeds, one is ogg, the other is mp3. I couldn't see those from my browser, but I use Firefox and, using its 'view page source' facility, the Domino Radio player can be seen, in HTML, providing two streams: http://live.dominorad.io:8000/live.mp3 http://live.dominorad.io:8000/live.ogg Either of these can be entered into the 'Tune in URL' field in the SBS web UI, and will play. regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88177 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Domino radio (temporary one-week event)
Anybody know how to tune in to the Domino Radio event? The radio event is described here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2011/jun/06/domino-radio-live and the Domino Radio site is here: http://www.dominorad.io/ On the site there is a 'play' button for the browser, which has this URL: http://www.dominorad.io/# but this link does not work in 'tune in URL' on the Internet Radio menus of the web UI. I am sure I don't understand radio streaming properly, but would be grateful for any suggestions for how to listen to this station through my squeezeboxes. Re: [slim] Post Favorite Podcast URLs Here
Boeing's 777 is a very fine aircraft, and British Airways is, certainly, up with the best of the tier 1 carriers in terms of operations, training, and maintenance. Yet, a BA 777 crashed just short of the runway at Heathrow, BA's home base, in an accident that, despite hundreds of witnesses, crew statements, full access to flight recorders and systems data, and complete airframe, took several years of investigation and trials before it was fully understood. Travelling a fair bit in my work, and interested to understand in what had happened to go so wrong, I noted this reference in a professional avaiation forum: "Peter Burkill was captain of British Airways Flight 38, a Boeing 777 with 152 aboard, when it suffered an uncommanded dual engine rollback and crashed short of the runway at Heathrow on January 17, 2008. This is what he experienced, in his words." website: http://www.avweb.com/podcast/podcast/AudioPodcast_CaptainPeterBurkill_BritishAirways_HeathrowCrash_202246-1.html. Direct link to Podcast: http://www.avweb.com/podcast/files/2010-03-29_PeterBurkill-HeathrowCrashCaptain.mp3 I found his description compelling, and I hope that people find it so. Incidentally, somewhile after the accident, the captain left BA for a few months. He has since rejoined, as a 777 captain again. Though the AVweb site has a second podcast interviewing Peter after he left BA, its content - discussing mainly why he left - is not really relevant anymore since he has since returned. (The word around that time was that BA's chief exec personally had a hand in getting him back.) Re: [slim] How can I listen to my music in the garden?
howie.stone;625956 Wrote: > Thanks. Is that with the BT infinity router? No. The unit sits on an internal wall picking up a wireless 'g' signal from a Linksys AP (access-point, like a router but without any 'routing' - apologies if you're already familiar with what an AP is) and repeating it into the two rooms where the wireless 'g' signal from the Linksys was too weak for the SBRs to work. I purchased this unit because I wasn't sure whether repeaters, generally, had to be the 'same manufacturer' as the main router or AP whose signal was being repeated. (Eg, BT, in your case.) Some of the comments on Amazon indicated that this Edimax unit would repeat any wireless 'g' signal, so I got it. It certainly repeats/extends the Linksys's signal ok. Perhaps there will be some comments about its use with BT Infinity since BT has such a large proportion of the BB market in UK. On a slightly different subject, have you grasped, ok, that there are two different suggestions for you on this thread? (i) Repeat the wireless signal from the BT Infinity - for example, by sticking the Edimax unit on a wall near a window looking into the garden (behind a curtain is fine, upstairs would be better than downstairs*). (ii) Don't repeat the signal at all. Instead, get an additional WiFi AP instead, installed at a suitable (upstairs - preferably*) window overlooking the garden - behind a curtain is fine, which you then connect using an ethernet cable to your BT Infinity. Set the new upstairs AP to use a different channel from the channel used by the BT Infinity. *Note: If you are in an urban area and your windows, or garden, are to some extent 'overlooked' by adjacent properties, you might be better off not putting your WiFi unit in an upstairs window, but in a downstairs window where its signal will contend with lower-strength signals from other properties. (Signal attenuation - eg from other properties - tends to be greater at lower heights.) regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87094 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It has removable antennae, so you might be able to add, I think, an external antenna if you wanted to do so. In the box are a couple of screws to wall mount it. It has a plastic case, and a separate plug-top PSU, so is quite lightweight. It repeats a signal from a Linksys 'g' wireless AP. I run a couple of SBRs off it, in a very-solid-brick house where even the internal walls are solid brick, so I needed a repeater. I bought mine from Amazon but had to return it because it seemed to overheat and the wireless would 'just stop'. Amazon replaced it, and the replacement has worked well. Re: [slim] BIG ANGRY BEEF, buggy upgrade install process, SBS/SBR
Can you check what your SBS IP address is? And, for good measure, check what the subnet mask is? Irrespective of that - which should be checked anyway - I don't like DHCP for servers because DHCP address assignments always have an expiry period. On some routers, this can be as little as 30 mins, though probably longer in your case. (Something you could check, if you wanted, on your router's setup pages.) Nevertheless, the address will expire sometime, and the server will ask for another. Two things happen at this point: (i) during this time, the SBS can not be seen by anything, nor can it see anything, and (ii) the router will assign an address. It might not be the same address, unless you are, genuinely, certain that you have forced the router to always assign that same address. For servers, my own preference is to use permanent/fixed IP addresses, to avoid either of those problems happening. (It also helps in case I ever need to set up specific routes/firewalls etc.) But, regardless if you want to do that, do check what the SBS IP address, and subnet, is at the moment, just to make sure. Not that I think it matters, but is your SBS on Linux or Windows? And have you a separate machine on which you could run Squeezeplay? regards, Atlantic -- Atlantic Atlantic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44239 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85793 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Not an expert, but can share my experience setting up our SBRs. I have managed to use the Net UDAP tool on our Linux systems, though with some difficulty. I found that it is necessary to be very careful to always make sure that any changes to the config are both: (i) transmitted to the SBR, and, I think, (ii) some kind of save/reset command has to be issued. The procedure is on the NET UDAP webpage but I got confused a few times. I have the impression that just putting things into NET UDAP, isn't enough, an extra step is needed to make sure they are remembered in the SBR. And, to check, you must make sure that the tool tells you what is in the SBR, not what might still be in NET UDAP's memory; I'm not sure what I did to force NET UDAP to forget the settings and re-retrieve them from the SBR, but that was necessary before I could be sure the SBR was set up correctly. I did it again, after switching the SBR off and back on, as well. I did manage, from advice on the thread, and on the NET UDAP webpage. [slim] Marantz MCR603 and SBS
(very) new poster here, and may I first apologise if I have posted in the wrong forum? Happily running SBS (on linux) and a few SBRs, and am very impressed by the system. I was thinking of getting a Marantz MCR603 (looks quite good to me) [not permitted to post the link, but the device is on the Marantz site] and wondered whether it could be used as a player on my SBS? It has a network port, and is (definitely) DLNA certified but I cannot see from the downloaded manual whether it will 'only' work with DLNA systems or whether it could also work with SBS's ...stream.mp3 as an HTTP player. (I realise an SBR could drive it anyway, and probably very nicely since the MCR603 has an optical input.) As I understand it, SBS can act as a DLNA client, but not act as a DLNA server (though there is a DLNA 'intermediary' application - which works on Windows, but not Linux). Hence, I assume that this Marantz unit could only connect to SBS as an HTTP device using ...stream.mp3 Has anyone any experience of this unit?
