[slim] sad day - dead SliMP3
had a lightning storm this afternoon that freaked out some of my networking and my original SliMP3 from nearly a decade ago looks like a casualty. It's stuck on "Initializing..." which from my searches indicated a flaked out microcontroller. All previous events like these were handled by slimdevices sending a replacement controller chip. Unfortunately those were done many years ago prior to the Logitech sale. I'm not going to punish myself by even attempting to call Logitech about a replacement chip. Am open to any other ideas and would gladly pay a repair fee to get it going again. -- twylie Synology DS-1010+ -> transporter -> Krell KRC2 -> Classe CAM 350s -> Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Mark Levinson 380 -> nuforce 8Bs -> Audio Physic Sparks Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Russound CAV6.6 and CAM6.6 -> whole house audio Thecus N5200 -> SliMP3 as a desk clock/thermometer :-) twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88909 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Looks great! Really excited to get home and use this around the house. One error I'm getting: If I hit the My Apps link I get the following message: "This player is already registered..." I get this on both versions of iPeng (iPad and iPhone), but not on the web interface. Been off the forums for a few weeks and was excited to see this thread. Will purchase when I get into the office this morning. Screen shots look great and I appreciate your continued development of the apps. I was pleasantly surprised to see you priced it the same as iPeng for iPhone. I have become accustomed to iPad specific version of my favorite app being priced 1.5-2.0x times the price for the small screen versions. Again, thanks to you and the other Squeeze-centric developers. Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
I am definitely looking forward to the iPad for this and a few other "control" apps I expect will be killer on the device. Wired posted a video yesterday of how their app will look on the device. The video is VERY cool and is actually running live code and content. It may give you some different ideas for constructs and design. Just as their app is trying to redefine static/interactive content, I think there is great opportunity to have a music application running on the iPad that becomes very immersive. I can see where it could allow the user to free roam music, musical connections, history, etc. all within one tidy application. http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/02/the-wired-ipad-app-a-video-demonstration/ -- twylie Thecus N5200 -> transporter -> Krell KRC2 -> 4 x nuforce 8b -> Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Monarchy DIP -> Monarchy Super DIP -> Monarchy 18b -> AES 845 monos -> Sonus Faber Concertos / Audio Physic Sparks Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Russound CAV6.6 and CAM6.6 -> whole house audio twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Adding a Popcorn Hour to my Squeeze system
Quick and dirty testing results: I pulled down the first 3 HD files from here: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/hd/index.html Night Launch of STS-126. Actually, I am glad I went looking for HD content - my dad and I were on the causeway to view this launch, so I'm pretty happy to have found some really good footage. :-) PCH A-100 (I have the old model, not the 110) - Handled the 480p and 1080i files without any noticeable problems. The 720p file stuttered early on and I noticed the bitrate spiked to over 27Mbps briefly during the jerkiness. No dropouts and no black frames due to trying to recover. AppleTV - 480p no issues, 1080i and 720p were visibly degraded or jerky during anything over 8+Mbps Hope this is helpful, but may not have provided a clear winner for you. It looks like if you need HD, the ATV isn't going to make you happy, but if your content is DVD ISO and DIVX, it's a clearer choice for now. -- twylie Thecus N5200 -> transporter -> Krell KRC2 -> 4 x nuforce 8b -> Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Monarchy DIP -> Monarchy Super DIP -> Monarchy 18b -> AES 845 monos -> Sonus Faber Concertos / Audio Physic Sparks twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57710 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Adding a Popcorn Hour to my Squeeze system
Haven't tried the A-110 yet, but I have 3 of the original A-100 I use for ISO streaming as well as DIVX files. Overall works pretty well, but I've had to RMA all of my popcornhour units for various reasons. They come back with new main boards in a week or two and have been fine since the RMAs. I also have an early AppleTV which, now that it's running XBMC, is a far better interface IMHO than the PopcornHour units. The Apple TV can be hacked with a thumb drive now, eliminating telnet and command line fixes. This is my recommended solution as it does video and music much better than the PCH. I still use my SB3's for music, but the XBMC interface is much better when compared to the PCH. The PCH may do true HD video better(I don't know as I don't need it yet); but I'm only streaming regular DVD ISO's thusfar. If you go with the PCH units, I'd stick your video drive in the server rather than have it at the PCH unit. My PCH units are now driveless for noise and heat reasons. Re: [slim] Multiple players/servers/SC versions w/ Controller ?
follow-up with some additional information. I was unable to find a way to "bail out" on the controller upgrading between the different versions of SqueezeCenter. I ended up uninstalling 7.0.1 and installing 7.0 on my Windows server. This puts it on the same version that the Thecus module is built against. Everything is working great now. Switching between players being driven from different servers is very quick. It takes about 2 sec to find the players connected to the other server during the Choose Player process. Once I chose the other player, it connects and is ready to go in under 3 sec. I'll have to keep my servers versions in sync and not upgrade until builds are available for the N5200. [slim] Multiple players/servers/SC versions w/ Controller ?
I am running a handful of players in my house. My transporter, SliMP3, and a SB3 are connected to Squeezecenter running on a Thecus N5200. This server has all my FLAC files. I believe the version of SC that Andreas ported for the N5200 is the early stable 7.0 release I also have second server running the latest stable ( 7.0.1 ). This server feeds a distributed audio system via a SB3 and another system via another SB3. On the Controller if I look under Choose Player, I see all 5 of my devices. However, because the server versions are not identical, the Controller wants to do an upgrade every time I try to switch between players that are running off of different servers. Is there any way to "NOT" do the software upgrade when switching between players/servers? I guess another option would be to downgrade my Windows box to run the early 7.0 release. I'd appreciate any suggestions, pointers, or advice on making it easier (and quicker) to switch between the players/servers when using the Controller. _ -- twylie Thecus N5200 -> transporter -> Krell KRC2 -> 4 x nuforce 8b -> Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Monarchy DIP -> Monarchy Super DIP -> Monarchy 18b -> AES 845 monos -> Sonus Faber Concertos / Audio Physic Sparks twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47749 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The one stop shopping experience seems to have driven his decision. It's easy for us to point out the SlimDevices overall superiority from a technical and feature standpoint, but his views didn't align with ours. I have a few friends that have seen my setup (NAS feeding SB3 for whole house audio + Transporter in 2 channel rig, SB3 in garage) yet when it comes time to buy, they went with Sonos for the display remote. They also would have been willing to pay someone to rip all their music, but didn't know where to begin. The various choices offered for these setups comes across as FUD to the consumer, so they often purchase the simple solution, even if its more expensive and not "the best". Re: [slim] New York Times Article on Digital Music
what scares me most about reviews like these and single box solutions is the lack of backup and the cost (time and/or $) to re-rip CDs. I completely get the "I want one transaction to cover equipment and ripping" mentality, but he doesn't have a backup solution, nor the current ability to add additional playback units. From a marketing standpoint, these are the caveats/features I talk up most when getting someone into ripping/streaming audio. I know that Stereophile and most high end magazines give the manufacturer the ability to respond to a review before printing time to correct any errors or address any concerns. IMHO, it would be wise for Logitech SMS Marketing to reach out to these "web" authors with a "thanks for the review, we are working to help customers differentiate our solutions and the unique benefits they offer. Here are some additional considerations should you decide to revisit our products in the future." From my experience, education is the biggest gap in getting the mainstream to adopt streaming/digital storage concepts. SlimDevices offers some unique differences and features that require some awareness above the obvious issues in order to be fully appreciated. -- twylie Thecus N5200 -> transporter -> Krell KRC2 -> nuforce 8b -> Sonus Faber Concertos / Audio Physic Sparks twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43724 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] CLI help on playing favorite via batch file
I'm trying to simplify my wife's use of a SB3 hooked to a whole house audio system. She comfortable pulling up the web interface and playing a favorite (local AM talk radio). I'd like to script this so she can press a button (on her PC or in the automation system) that opens a telnet session to the server and tells that player to begin playing a specific favorite. I have been able to get all the favorites to load in a playlist and begin playing the first one via the following: favorites playlist play I experimented with the item_id:1.1 and all variations 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 in order to get it to play the second item in the favorites list, but no avail. I have moved her "station" to the top of the playlist folder so it's effectively working, but a bit of a kludge. For my information, I'd love to be able to know how to access a specific favorite. I just tried a full uninstall, blowing the DIR away and reinstalling with 6.5.4. I am still unable to get favorites to begin playing from within the web interface. The SB3 I need this to work on is in the basement feeding a whole house setup, so running to the player isn't going to work for me. SoftSqueeze doesn't offer me anything to directly control the player in question, although I guess I could sync another player after I got it running. [slim] Re: help needed: explicit path to iTunes XML file
fast switching for me would be the ability to switch slimservers (running on different machines) via the web interface, even if it required an auto reboot of the SB3 and associated delay. The "hold down the left arrow" works, but 2 of my players are in the basment feeding a whole house audio system. Running downstairs to switch servers is less than ideal. I read Dean's comments on the bug/feature i found and have a little better understanding of the complexities and security issues. I'd be all for some "presets" of network/server choices and hope this might be in line with the ability to switch in and out of squeezenetwork via the web interface. My current setup has 2 SB3's in the basement - one pointed to my main slimserver and a second that stays logged into squeezenetwork. My workaround was at Ross' suggestion - I loaded SlimServer directly on the macmini and switched the server my SB3 was pointing to. Have some updating to do as the OS X nightly I downloaded doesn't match firmware levels of 6.5.1b that I was running on the XP box. Worked for my short term needs. bringing this back up to see if a feature request exists for ability to select the server independant of re-running the network setup. I have one library on a RAID5 server in the basement, but multiple PC's running around the house. Different platforms, some SS playlists, some iTunes playlists, etc. iTunes is great for creating drag and drop playlists, but if done on a machine other than the XP box running slimserver, it gets tricky to feed these playlists to whole house audio or a specific room with a SB. The ability to dynamically change the server the SB is pointing to (without re-running setup) would be a great feature to me. The SoundBridge has been doing this since its inception as I used it to toggle between my slimserver instance and an iTunes library on a separate machien that popped on and off the network. I've doen some testing this morning and found the following: - The ISA server config: Windows 2000, SP4 - Slimserver is not causing the issue, it is directly related to having the SB3 on the network. - I pulled the box running slimserver off the network, but left the SB3 wired to the network - not connected to Squeezenetwork. After about 15 min, the Windows Firewall pegged out the CPU on our ISA server. I will run ethereal later today when most of the users are off the system to see if I can further pinpoint what traffic is causing the Firewall to freak out. Recently moved to a new office location and determined that my cube (SlimServer running on Windows XP driving a SB3 off a 5 port switch in my cube) was causing one of our VPN servers running Windows Firewall to peg the CPU after a half hour or so. End result is slowing our T1s down to dial up speed once the CPU on this box gets pegged. Google research shows that under certain circumstances, this is a result of the Windows Firewall seeing what looks like a DoS on the network. Eliminated a worm/virus as a root cause, but still looking for ideas to research. Sorry, but no help on that one. twylie -- twylie twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22161 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: How do YOU backup your music?
I, too got tired of backing up to external drives and wasn't happy about having to keep burning plastic. It wasn't the music so much as a video archiving project that drove me over the edge - 12GB per hour of video in raw format. About 3 years ago, I sucked it up and built a dedicated server with hardware RAID. It has been running 6 * 250GB drives in RAID5 with hotspare for 1TB of storage. A year later, I built a second server with 1.75TB in RAID5 using 8 * 250GB drives. Both servers have been runnign 24x7 in my basement since they were built. I use RDP to control and admin each of them. Although this gave me some improvement over losing a single hard drive, all my digital financial records, pictures, and source videos were loaded on a 300GB USB drive I sent to my parents house in another state. I update that drive about once a quarter with them. -- twylie twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22161 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I had issues with both IE and FireFox behaving properly. Switched to Opera on the PC and all is well. I, too, just got my n770 and spent about 3 hours last night streaming and "remoting" from my Slimserver install in my basement. I can't comment on the imrpovments due to ajax implementation, but I will say that the skin responds as well as I'd expect it to on a light device. FAR better than the trials I had using Palm V over bluetooth and iPaq 5550 over WLAN over the last couple of years. Many thanks to Ben for all his hard work! -twylie -- twylie twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Only thing I could think to check would be to make sure that the speedstep stuff on the laptop isn't staying in low power mode and you might want to try experimenting with connecting the laptop, NAS, and SB2 to a switch or to the wired ports on the access point to see if it makes a differnce. I can't imagine wireless G woudl be causing you any delays, but it would help take one more thing out of the troubleshooting equation. When you mentioned that it's slow navigating through the data, is this via the remote or using the interface back to the server? if it's on the interface to the server, is it local (laptop) access or access from somewhere else on your network? -- twylie twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19080 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: A suggestion for people with large music library
what hardware are you running slimserver on? I've got almost 60k tracks in my database and it's been running 24x for the last 3 years on a 2.4P4 with 1GB of RAM. I'm now running the SliMP3, a SB and a SB2 on my network and aside from some delay in searching (I've got search set to look across all tags), it's plenty snappy for my use. -- twylie twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19080 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
