It fails. It's on the context menu and when you click it, the flag that

I tried, killing the process in the task manager would not work. In all
 cases, rebooting works, obviously.

If you mean logged onto the Vista box, no. There currently are no
non-privileged users. It's a new machine bought to run a drobo and
squeezecenter. It's not doing much else right now though it may do more
in the future.

The last time I needed to restart the computer I tried using the tray
icon to stop squeezecenter and for the first time, it worked. I'll be
keeping an eye on it.

I have the squeezebox connected and configured to use ethernet now and
it seems to be remaining connected better.

Thank you for your help.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2008-04-29 Thread jstraw

I'm running 7.0 on Home Premium

The application cannot be stopped using the tray icon, a reboot of the
computer is required.

The application fails with some frequency and again, it cannot be
stopped and started from the tray icon and cannot be killed from task
manager either.

It's important for Squeezecenter to not die and it's important to be
able to stop and start it when I wish too.

Are there solutions for these issues?

Is there no option to do this or does it fail? If there's no option, then SC is

I have no objection to running it as a service. How complicated is that
to set up? I don't know if that would solve my problems, no nothing for
them or add new problems though. For me, having it launch at startup as
an application is just as good...as long as it works.

Is 7.0 17793 the proper version for 32 bit Vista?

Yes, the SB can only connect to one server at a time.

Press and hold left on the remote for 5 seconds and go to network
setup, pressing FWD to skip through all your existing settings. Stop
when you reach Select Music Source and specify the IP address or name
of the other server.

Once you do this once, it will remember the other server, so pressing
and holding left on the remote will allow you to connect to the other
server (scroll down to see all options).

There is something called sliding windows where you have to
acknowledge packets but you allow for sending new ones before ack, but
at a certain point the packets may be acknowledged. For instance, by
acknowledging packet #100, you're implicitly acknowledging all the
previous ones. I learned about this many years ago, so I can't recall
all the details

And yes, there are many people out there suddenly having issues with
their wireless with Vista, and it's Vista issue...

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2008-04-24 Thread MrStan

Yes it looks like Microsoft have been playing around with TCPIP again.
They have also made some changes in the latest update to XP. I
understand that for Windows Networking they are now insisting on a
every packet being acknowledged before sending the next packet. This is
causing havoc to companies that are trying to run Windows round the
world.

I am currently running SlimServer 6.5.2 on Vista SP1 OK and for the
record the virus scanner is AVG 7.5. Can't see why SC7 should be any
more critical but if you had to do any registry hacks to get the
Networking stable as I did with Vista then Microsoft have chosen to
change some of the key names in SP1 so I had to make a change after
upgrade. This wasn't a SlimServer problem, it's just that my ageing
router doesn't appreciate Microsoft's TCPIP enhancements and doesn't
always DHCP.

The issue was resolved by a recent firmware upgrade to the wireless

Not a good idea, you're adding an extra wireless hop which can affect
performance. If you install SC on the NV (when it's available) it's
purported to be very slow.

It would be best to try to get SC working on the Vista PC, or just dig

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2008-02-20 Thread haraldo

Some explanation of how services run in Windows, and this is valid for
all versions.

My apologies if this is already explained in this thread, too many
posts to read

The security model in Vista has been made a lot more complex than it's
ever been in Windows, way too complex in my opinion.

Some basics:
- The user that logs on has no influence whatsoever on the security
context of any of the services that run on the system.
- The user may start or stop the services, that requires a specific
right that's called Start/Stop Services.
- If you have Power User rights or Administrator rights you may always
do this (at least that's the case in Windows Server 2003)
- The security context of the service is solely defined in the Service
descriptor of the SqueezeCenter service, nowhere else!
- If the service is set to Automatic start, you don't have to login,
and you don't have to start the service to access SqueezeCenter,
Windows will start it for you

In order for SqueezeCenter to run properly, I guess it should always
run as a service, because of the incredibly complex security model. If
SqueezeCenter runs within the securityContext of the logged on user
(hence not as a service) you get into the complex setting of changing
or elevating security context, this is not necessary when running as a
service.

There is something around the OS security in Vista that I have never
found out how works. As an Administrator user, you don't have access to
many Kernel OS mechanisms, you need to escalate security context in
order to do this. Sometimes this only works from Administrator user
(Not a user with Administrator rights, but the Administrator user)
Sometimes I have found this to work, sometimes not.
I tried installing iTunes on Longhorn (which is the same code base as
Vista) and it just didn't work at all if I ran the installation from a
user with full admin rights. If I ran the installer from the
Administrator user, it worked =:-O

I have not had the opportunity to validate this, but I'm suggesting to
check out a security right that's called Act as part of operating
system that possibly may sort things out. I really don't know this
because this is complex stuff, but this one may be a key...

Vista is NOT easy on end users !!

I have never tried Slimserver or SqueezeCenter on Vista, because now
I've converted my home stuff to Suse Linux, and everything is
smoking

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2008-01-03 Thread Gerry Cordon

It's not a problem - more an irritation. Since getting a new PC with
Vista Home Premium installed, at boot-up Slim Server starts OK but I
always get a pop-up error message from Windows:

slim.exe stopped working and was closed

On opening the Slimserver browser interface I also find more occasions
when the page just hangs and either I can't follow links or the
right-hand player pane does not appear (or both). This can be rectified
by re-booting.

All of these issues are fixed in the latest SqueezeCenter (formally
SlimServer) beta. That said it's still in beta testing so you may or
may not want to wait until it goes release candidate.

Meh, I went back to XP after being on Vista for a few months and
couldn't stand XP anymore. I found that apps launched slower and
overall it just felt archaic to me. All of my Vista issues have been
solved with the latest SqueezeCenter (beta) and my realization that my
choppy m4a playback was due to nVidia's chipset SATA RAID/Quicktime
problem. I moved all of my m4a's to a non-RAID SATA drive and *poof*
everything works automagically now.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-11-25 Thread tomlillie

Hi,

I am also having problems since installing 6.5.4 on a previously stable
6.5.3 vista install. Slimserver starts fine and runs in the background
OK - my 3 squeezboxes run fine on a wireless G network, but when i open
slimserver in internet explorer 7, it freezes the first time it
'refreshes' the screen. the only solution is to close internet explorer
and restart - but the same thing happens each time. I am running alien
BBC (which still works fine on the squeezboxes). I have uninstalled
slimserver and re-installed. same problem. I thought the problem was
having added XM radio plugin - but having removed this an reinstalled -
same problem.
Windows firewall is disabled - i use Norton 360 (a useless piece of
crap - avoid if you can), but firewall is not an issue. the remote
squeezeboxes run fine throughout any internet explorere freeze - and
are accessing music off my infrant readyNAS without problem. I'm not
running slimserver on the NAS - so it is the PC slimserver that is
supporting. Appears to be an Internet explorer / slimserver problem.

thanks

Tom

Just to let anyone know the cause of the above problem.
Reading elsewhere on this forum I came across Robert who had the exact
same symptoms. Turned out you need to completely remove Zone Alarm
firewall not just shut it down. It seems Slimserver service has an
issue with the Truevector Zone alarm also installs.

Pleased to report 6.5.4 runs fairly wel under Vista except the slimtray
refuses to end slimserver which you still have to do manually via the
services menu.

thanks

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-10-03 Thread Gazza

First of all let me say how helpful this forum is and that i've tried
most things on this thread to resolve my particular problem.

I just installed slimserver 6.5.4 on my pc with Vista Ultimate.

However I notice that the slimserver service always shows 'starting'
rather than started. The slimsql service is started. I can stop the
service by properties, disable and reboot machine. If i restart the
service it just goes back to a never ending 'starting' status.

I've tried installing by administrator into a folder outside of program
files and also switching off Windows firewall and antivirus etc to no
avail.

I haven't yet tried a different earlier version of slimserver but 6.5.4
is supposed to be Vista compatible right ?

any ideas welcome as I'm lost without it

How complicated can the scanner be?

Do you have and shortcuts or corrupted files in your library? Also
another way to figure out why the scanner is crashing is to try the
bubble sort method. Split your library up into 4 different folders and
scan each folder individually. When you find the folder that crashes
the scan, repeat the same process again until you can narrow it down to
one file or multiple files.

You need to add slim.exe usually in C:\Program

rather than opening a specific port.

It should hopefully work then.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

Michael,

It was a 100% improvement! :)

I didn't uninstall 6.5.1 but I did exit the tray icon, remove the
additional two exe's from the Firewall exception list, and set the Slim
Service back to 'Manual'. After installing May 12th's v6.5.2 build
Firefox immediately opened the SS page (at http://127.0.0.1:9000/).
This didn't happen in the previous build.

After I updated the firmware on the player the SS webpage found my
player. Again, this didn't happen before.

On restarting my machine SS started automatically and I could click the
tray icon (which now said running) to open the configuration page.
Again, this didn't happen in the previous build.

My only complaint is that all my preferences were wiped so I had to
set-up my plugins, etc again. If that what has to be done to get in
working in Vista then so be it BUT if possible it would be nice if they
were kept.

Well done!

James

 It was a 100% improvement! :)

From what I've understood about the issue, one problem (improvement)
with Vista is, that any program can't write to the program folder - which
SlimServer did until now. In cases where a software does this, it's
written to some virtual folder structure. The installer has been changed
to put the configuration elsewhere. I can imagine it didn't find the old
file anymore. Search your drives - you'll probably find another
slimserver.prefs file. And then I'm sure you'll have a backup next time ;-)

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-05-13 Thread Triode

On Vista, the latest nightlies will store all files created by the
server in %ALLUSERSPROFILE% rather than under the program folder for
this reason. Vista allows admin to write to the program folder, but
not normal users. In this case it silently virtualises the filesystem
to the users account. This has been causing us problems when the
server was run as admin and later as a user. [look in
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\ to see
what has been virtualised for your account..]

I'm afraid this move means your preferences will be lost as the
installer creates a new blank one in the new location. If you want to
work around this, and the old prefs are still in the program folder,
then removing %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\SlimServer\slimserver.pref and
restarting the server. This will hopefully copy over the old prefs
minus the ones that need to change to the new location.

What version of Vista are you running?

What version of Slimserver have you installed?
6.5.2

I have a new HP Laptop and have 6.5.2 working great. I found that
installing it in its own directory of C: works much better than putting
it in C:\program files\slimserver\slimserver. I created C:\myprograms
and installed it there.

SlimServer starts my Laptop joins my wireless netwok and works
flawlessly. I will say that it did not work the first two times I
installed it in C:\program files. It would work right off the bat but
once I power down my machine, and turn it on the next day. It would not
work.

Anyway, for those who are having problems. Please try what I did above.
I hope it works for you.

Respectfully,

Chris

I got v6.5.1 working in Vista. Had to add the 2 exceptions mentioned
before to the firewall (scanner.exe mysqld.exe); slim.exe added
itself to the firewall when Vista prompted to give it access. I also
had to set Slim.exe as a delayed auto start in Services.

My tray icon still doesn't work, but at least the rest does.

Does anybody know when a version is going to be available for Vista
where everything works and it's easy to setup?

I understand this can rectified by installing some 'new components'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4905), but as this my only
error, I don't want to tempt fate by possibly introducing new errors.

*What additional Security software are you using?*

Windows firewall is off.

*What happens if you try running Slim.exe manually from a DOS prompt?*
Not tried this.

I have done the Wdorta work around in Services.

A friend of mine has bought the identical Acer PC to me, but his Vista

As to firewalls: I think I'm all set with McAffee. But with Windows

confess I do not see SlimServer come up when I look for inbound rules.

OK, I am running SlimServer reliably with Vista Ultimate 32bit and User
Control enabled so I will have a go at helping.

You need to go to Windows Control Panel, Firewall. Select Allow a
program through Windows Firewall on the left hand side. It should ask
you to confirm administator access which your user must have to change
settings. Confirm OK and select the Exceptions tag at the top. Scroll
down the programs list and you should see BOTH slim.exe and
slimtray.exe with ticks beside them. If slimtray is missing then choose
Add program.

If Slimtray is not in this list then choose Browse.
Browse to C:\Program Files\Slimserver and select Slimtray.exe.
Select Open and OK in the next box until you return to the exceptions
list and make sure that Slimtray is in there and the box is ticked.
Select OK and that's all, close the Firewall box.

The one program I do have some problems with is Slimtray. I suggest
that you do not try to start or stop Slimserver using this application.
It appears to work and the little Icon flashes away but it seems to be
do nothing tto Slimserver so it is possible that it looks like it is
running but isn't. The Web interface from Vista works fine unless you
have anything else on your machine occupying port 9000 in which case
you will need to reconfigure the Slimserver port.

You can start Slimserver from Control Panel, Administrative Tools,
Services. Scroll down to Slimserver and make sure that both Slimserver
and SlimserverMySQL are set to automatic. If Slimserver is not running
then start it from here. You do not need to touch SlimserverMySQL as it
will automatically follow.

The other major problem I have discovered is if you wish to play ALC
files. I cannot get socketwrapper to play ball at all with Vista and
there is another thread lower down which will tell you how to
substitute mplayer for these files.

There does appear to be a Vista network bug particularly if you are
using the NVidia chipset. Occaisionally the network port does not
configure correctly on startup which will of course stop Slimserver
working. I am still looking for a fix for this one and might be getting
close. Just make sure your browser works before blaming Slimserver.

For anyone having problems copying files across to Vista from another
machine, beware. If the file system on the other machine is NTFS then
you must be carefull not to copy any user rights along with them. Even
if the user name you are using is identical the rights will not match
and you will not have access. The user control will be hiding your
administrative rights. If this happens then you must manually take
ownership of any folders and files that you have copied and then set
new rights for your current user.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-29 Thread mbr

Purchased a new PC (basic Dell) with Vista about two weeks ago, as it
was time. Vista is definitely proving itself to be buggy with other
applications, but nothing like Silserver. I'm a certified Old Guy, and
not computer literate by any stretch, but I do worship the slimserver
experience, both for the radio listening experience and ease of my CD's
having been converted to mp3. This forum is invaluable.

My experience with Vista and Slimserver has been very frustrating,
although many thanks to Vdorta's workaround -- I don't know what I
would have done without it. Nonetheless, even after downloading 6.5.2
and reinstalling using Services.msc the settings (especially for
SlimServerMySQL) don't want to stay set. It just seems to change
itself, no rhyme or reason to it. What's up with that? Am I doing
something wrong?

And while I have tried upon installation to set Slimserver to start
upon system starting, that setting does not stay checked -- is there a
way to do it after installation?

Also: when I try to open Slimserver from the system tray I get: Can't
open to write to:\ProgramFiles\SlimServe\SlimServerWeb Interface Url:
Permission Denied. Even after getting that, Slimserver opens --
sometimes -- from the desktop icon. Or if neither will open
Slimserver, sometimes it nonetheless opens remotely by a wireless
laptop.

And like others have experienced, sometimes the Computer says
Slimserver is running, but it's not-- confirmed by using the
Services.msc drill, and, of course by the squeezebox itself.

Rebooting, etc. doesn't seem to help, and often seems to make a mess of
thing by changing my settings on automatically start to something
else. As to firewalls: I think I'm all set with McAffee. But with
Windows Firewall I guess I must be OK (since it's working now),
although I confess I do not see SlimServer come up when I look for
inbound rules. Does anyone have a suggestion on that-- i.e., how to
make sure I'm OK with that. Microsoft's guidance is simply Greek to
me, I confess. And I would welcome a step-by-step on making sure IE7
is set properly, if someone would be kind enough.

Will this get better?

I've had a variety of issues with Vista refusing to run certain apps
automatically (even is they are set to 'run as administrator') and
decided to switch off the user account control function. Potentially
risky I know but there's no-one in the house who would cause problems
and I'm pretty confident that my hardware and software firewalls are
protecting me from the web.

Anyway, reinstalled SS and bingo, it runs automatically on start-up
every time and the browser interface works too. Fantastic I thought,
but now my SB can't/won't connect to the network or SS, which is weird
because a) it did before and b) it's hardwired to the network and not
using a wireless connection.

I haven't changed anything from standard on my router, firewalls or
anti-virus.

Am stumped.

HifiSteve you might want to call/email support. I think something might
be wrong with your player, have you checked its MAC address?

Hold the left arrow on the remote for 5 seconds, then scroll down to
'current settings' and hit the right arrow. Then scroll down to MAC
address and compare it with the sticker on the bottom, do they match?
If they don't hit the right arrow once more and change the MAC address
to match the sticker on the bottom of the player. If that doesn't help,
I'd suggest contacting support about this networking issue.

I am using SS 6.5.1 and Vista Ultimate 32 bit clean build on a
home-built system with top-of-the-line hardware. I followed the advice
of Chris on the wiki for installation. All that worked fine, but..
Running thereafter was intermittent. Slimserver tray would usually
appear to hang on startup - but after several tries, reboots, etc. I
could usually get SS to run. After having gotten fed up with Vista
annoyances from User Account Control (eg. refusing to delete folders

did on previous PC under XP. If anyone is reading this who is just
thinking about getting Vista - DON'T DO IT!

This is a firewall issue. Do you have a 3rd party firewall, or
anti-virus software that might contain a firewall thats blocking TCP
9000?

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-08 Thread gtcharlie

Just switched from XP professional to Windows Vista Home premium and am
having no luck getting slimserver to work. Downloaded a clean install
of 6.5.2 on a new computer and everything seemed fine. Slimserver
opened up, scanned my music directory and found all music. The
problems start when I actually try to play music through the
squeezebox. It shows all my music but when I hit the play button it
says it is playing but nothing happens. When I switch to my rhapsody
account through squeezenetwork everything is fine and music plays. Any

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-08 Thread terry_gardener

i have recently upgarded to windows vista ultimate (32 bit) from xp home
and cant get slimserver to work properly.

it just seems to crash at lot of the time, mainly when accessing
folders that the music is stored in. (ie artist-album name-then crashes
when trying to go into this folder)

i even tried to add the slim.exe, the slimtray and the web interface
programs to the exceptions list of windows firewall but still the same.

i have even tried turning off the firewall and still the same.

when i try to access the same folders from the player the same thing
happens it just freezes and nothing happens.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-06 Thread EnochLight

Just wanted to say, although I still can't get Defender to allow
Slimserver to automatically run on a restart, once I go into Defender
after getting to my desktop and let it go, it launches - running -
almost instantly. Before it would take about 15 seconds to initialize,
so wow!

Nice work on whatever you guys did!

Everything else seems to work fine, although for some reason Rhapsody
pooped out on me last night after listening to 12 songs on a 30-song
album. Might have been my Internet though... *shrugs*

BTW, I saw the Logitech logo on the splash screen; no more Slim
Devices :-(

Thanks vdorta! SlimServer not displaying the web interface was
documented as a bug here:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4748

I've paraphrased your workaround which seems to be working very well
for me. I've also noticed this helps even with Norton and McAfee
related SlimServer issues on Vista.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-04 Thread fingers

Yup It seems Like SD finally figured it out with 6.5.2. I installed
the beta release a couple days ago and BINGO... all is working... Of
course they still have not figured out how to get Slim Server to start
automatically as in XP without editing the Services Start Up feature to
delayed.

It sure is funny with all the communications I have had with support
telling me that they see no problem that they finally released a
version that does work!. Go figure

Are you sure that scanner, slim and slimtray are checked as firewall
exceptions? Did you install SS as an user with administrator privileges
(the Vista default)? I suggest you uninstall, reinstall the latest
nightly checking the automatic option and then use the workaround.

Vdorta, thank you for your directions quoted here. I had Slimserver
working fine on my XP desktop and laptop, but have been unable to get
it working on my new computer which is running under Vista Ultime 32
bit. I downloaded Slimserver 6.5.2 dated 20th Marchj 2007, followed the
instructions above and I'm busily enjoying lots of music I have not
 listened to in years.

Right clicking the Slimtray icon and selecting Open Slimserver now
 works thank you, kesey.

I have done that now and now it can´t find my Squeezebox. I can open
Slimserver, but Slimserver can´t find the Squeezebox. I can´t even turn
it on on teh power-button on the remote. I hade just made the new
settings for ethernet-connection when it failed to start again.

Did you read my message (#48) in this thread? If you chose the Vista
default installation of user with administrative privileges, I suggest
you uninstall and reinstall, and then use the workaround I explained.
If there is anything you don't understand, please post a more detailed
question.
