Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
So could this project have continued if it had been called something other than Community Squeeze? Was it just the name or was it other issues? Seems rather strange and very sad, especially after all the work that was as put into the development. A link to a new thread for a new version would be sufficient, but it gets the attention of thread subscribers. Locking the thread prevents that kind of thing. Ok, now I am totally confused. Two days ago John Swenson wrote a long post, saying the Project is not dead and that a kit for the Wandboard will be available and a day late the same John Swenson wrote the project is dead and that there will be no kit. This after months of silence. So why make the first anoncement anyway? This is completely bizarre. I had jumped on the wagon and bought a Wandboard at the very beginning of this project. Then suddenly it all ended up in drama. So glad that Picoreplayer and SOA works. So actually there is no need for this kit / device or whatever you want to call it anymore. How does the community funded squeezebox compare to the Transporter. Obviously I know it won't have a built in screen, but how does the sound quality compare? Would I need to use an external DAC? Any idea how much it will cost approximately? I am not a DIY person but if it just requires a screwdriver then I might be able to put it together. Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
This is great news. I have followed since the inception of Community Squeeze and feared this path to a very high quality LMS/SBS-based system was not getting closer. Since the project has likely progressed a bit more in the quiet (from an observer's perspective) period, it seems like this might be a somewhat more finished first release. Maybe a CSP1.2, so to speak. Do you envision producing a larger run than you originally mentioned? I believe you said 25 or so early last year. I live near the SF Bay Area (Hollister) and could help occasionally, if and when such help might be needed. I have been through 2 connector test boards and I need to do another. I have to change the RCA jacks, the current ones are a little too flimsy. Also the BNC jack is not quite positioned right, but that entails tweaking the position of 5 other jacks. It's a complicated dance to get it all just right. Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
Hi all, I'm hear to announce that this project is not dead! One of the members here, Greg Stewart has agreed to head up this project. Greg has enlisted a talented man to develop the custom driver needed to interface the iMX6 processor to my DAC hardware. It is actually playing music at this point. While working on the driver specs I realized that the interface into the iMX6 I had been planning on was not going to work. Some frantic manual reading later I found a different interface which will work for what we want. Unfortunately this was not directly available on the EDM connector. Almost all of the chip pins can be muxed to multiple logical signals so I was able to find pins that could be muxed to something that WAS on the EDM connector. Of course this meant that the original test board would not work, so I had to design a new test board. I gave the board design to Greg and he built several, the driver has been developed to work with this and is now playing music. This also means that the CSP1 board has to be modified for the new interface. Fortunately all the hard stuff such as giga-bit Ethernet, USB etc stay the same, it is just the I2S out that is changing. The driver is designed to work with Triode's SoA project, it is currently already working with SoA. The scope of the project is essentially the same. We will be offering it as a DIY "group buy" rather than a full out of the box product. You will need to buy a wandboard, this board and the case. The only assembly tool required is a screwdriver. The assembly consists of unscrewing the module from the wandboard, screwing it into the CSP1 board, sliding the board into the case and screwing in the back panel. All the details of the board are the same as discussed in this thread already. After some hiatus this project is going full steam again. I wish the thank Greg for taking over the "project management" for this and keeping things going. John S. I too have zero issues perfectly synching multiple players running all day long (transporter, radio, boom, touch, with radio on WIFI). I will note however, that a couple of years ago I was trying to use an older winXP laptop (wired) for my LMS temporarily and had terrible luck with sync (logs showed things getting out of synch every few minutes). I never got to the bottom of it (and was back to using my vortexbox linux server soon anyhow). I tested my other newer Win7 laptop at the time and it was perfect with synch. With just a Receiver and Boom sync'd, cabled ethernet from the same switch, I got several glitches per minute. It was unusable. I posted logs, turned up server logging levels on request and posted more logs etc. Never got any significant insight so I gave up. I could also never get SqueezePlay on my laptop to reliably sync with either the Receiver or the Boom. Instead I just run a Receiver into my hifi. Then to multi room the hifi I bought two pairs of Dynaudio Xeo 3 wireless speakers, one pair for the kitchen and one pair fo my study. Damned expensive for what they do, but worth ever penny. The sound quality is more than I could ever have expected, especially given the speaker positions. And now I can multi room sync FM radio or the TV if I want to. All I'm looking for from a SqueezeBox replacement is something like the Receiver ie. converts ethernet to SPDIF, but can handle up to 24/96 native without needing resamplng in LMS. If it could handle multi channel up to 5.1 FLACs that would be a bonus, but I'd need it as 5.1 analogue outputs (no HDMI audio in my AV amp) so that seems unlikely. I have a variety of devices all over the house (2 Receivers, 2 Radios, 2 Touches, 3 Booms), all connected via WiFi, and I routinely have at least 4 or 5 playing in sync (and at times have had all 9), sometimes for several hours, with no glitches. On weekends there are often two Receivers, a Touch, Radio and Boom all playing in sync all day. If yours were cabled and still didn't sync, I wonder if there might be a hardware problem, rather than something with the software. Also, making it commercial means that people can be sure the company behind it also have an economical interest to maintain it, offer warranty/support and develop it further to create even better products in the future. Assuming the commercial product is designed for our needs and have a competitive price, I believe most people around here are going to be more interested in the commercial product than the DIY solution. I believe the current DIY interest in the forum mostly come from the fact that there isn't any commercial Squeezebox compatible product out there, so people are more or less forced to build their own. Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
I'm really pleased to read John's latest post, about a company and things moving forward. I really do hope that John and Adrian get a "product" released and wish them well. I'm probably about a week (or two at most) from showing my hand, which is why I have been so quiet for the last couple of months. There will be a commercial product, but there will also be DIY version for people who want to source their own parts and install the software themselves. It's not based on the Wandboard, BeagleBone or Cubietruck Triode seems to have all those covered with what he has been doing with his Squeeze on Arch, and I'm trying to avoid stepping on any toes. Unlike what happened with CS, things have been done right from the get-go, company set-up, trade marks applied for, to put things on a proper footing from day one. While I suspect that some people will have an issue with it being a commercial venture, I would like to be clear that to be able to offer any sort of DIY type product, it has to be funded somehow. I paid a small fortune, (out of my own pocket), for things like web hosting and legal advice for CS. I can't do that again, so somehow the money for those sort of things has to come from somewhere. Offering a "finished product" for the non-geeky, non-DIY'ers, was the only way to go, to be able to offer a "community" version at a "sensible" price. So, far from being dead, the idea of there being a replacement for the "Squeezebox", it's still alive and kicking.. And from an end-user perspective, it would be great to have a choice, about which hardware to go with, rather than there only being a single choice. PS. I won't be answering any questions, until the "product" is launched. Prefer to let the end-user do the talking, once they have the device in their hands. The first "production" unit is being shipped to a beta tester, (hi Pascal), early next week. The beta testers don't know exactly what they are getting and won't be able to talk about it until the company website goes live. May all sound a little "cloak and dagger", but I cannot risk the product being copied and for someone else to start marketing it, before our web site and online shop are live. Me, too. If it improves speed-to-market, and perhaps allows a larger feature set, I'd pay a bit more to see someone profit off of Logitech's mistake in dropping the line. Me, I'm interested in the add-on board alone... I have the Wandboard and the case, I have a starter power supply & will make a better one when I get this going, so for hardware, just what was known as the CSP1 or CSP2 board is what I need. I saw a guess-timate of $200 for that here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?98544-Community-Squeeze-OS-R3&p=751392&viewfull=1#post751392 , but don't know if that had any basis in reality. But if that board provides sound quality similar to that attributed to the similar-concept and design Bottlehead DAC, I'd be a very happy camper with that. And if you can get a full unit for $500-ish that compares in sound quality to the Bottlehead DAC at a projected $1600 or so and is mainly limited by being a computer source instead of a USB/SPDIF/Toshlink-input DAC, it'd be a great buy if you can live with that limitation (and I suspect many can, especially current or past Logitech Squeezebox users). My major concern now is product window... how long with Wandboards be available, what else will come along that my supplant the CSP concept, how many sales opportunities will have been lost due to people going down other paths if the unit becomes available say in Fall 2014 versus Winter 2014... or later? My hope is that it becomes available before any of these or other pitfalls become an issue and kills it! Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
The project is definitely NOT dead! I am currently in discussions with a company that is willing to help us out by setting up a corporation so that both the software and hardware can be released without the developers fearing that someone will take their house away. This company will also help with the distribution and shipping of the hardware products for a small fee (which is what we had always planned on doing, I don't have time or resources to box up and ship hundreds of these things out of my garage!) They are willing to be completely hands off, we still control what happens. I haven't made a formal announcement yet, there are still a lot of discussions going on about the details, it's going to take some time to get it all worked out. The design is still the same, based on a Wandboard module, so those that have already bought a Wandboard or are thinking about it will not be out that investment. I'm sorry this has taken so long to get out there, it WILL happen, but I can't put an exact date on it yet. John S. Corelli45, With all due respect, I dont think your comments about the Community Squeeze Project moving to a more commercial venture are warranted. If you go through the posts by JackOfAll, Triode, and John Swenson over the last several months, I think youd find little or no evidence that a move to commercialize this has occurred. JackOfAll provided a lot of information about the negative impact his involvement in the project had on his financial (and likely mental) well-being. He did try to move some of his contributions to a commercial product, partly to defray this impact, but more to keep it available for the community when he could not on his own. Triode developed and has made Squeezelite available for almost two years on his own dime. Now he appears to be doing the same with Squeeze-on-Arch as a way to keep this project alive and moving when the original path that caused JackOfAll so many problems had to be abandoned. And based on his comments here (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?101613-What-happened-to-communitysqueeze-org&p=782396&viewfull=1#post782396), John Swenson is continuing the development of the hardware portion of the CSP. My hope is that this will be available in the near future. Reading around the internet, one can see that John does have a couple of products that are seeing commercial release in the near future the Uptone Audio JS-2 power supply and the Bottlehead DAC. While the latter shares some of the concepts and technology with the CSP hardware, I cant see any way his efforts there impacted this project and I doubt both of these together will do more than provide him with a little drinking money. OTOH, I for one am very interested in the hardware side of this project. Since 2009 Ive been running a computer music server using an I2S-connected DAC as my main music source. I found to work very well sonically and it has been a very rewarding DIY project. But what I have read about Johns Wandboard add-on DAC suggests it will eclipse my efforts. Others have reported good results with not-to-dissimilar setups using the Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone (see here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/twisted-pear/250583-building-open-embedded-audio-applicance.html), and other embedded computers. I think the embedded computer plus an I2S-connected DAC is an excellent way to go and it avoids the added complexity of a USB DAC. I too am frustrated by the number of potholes this project has run into over the past 6 months or so. I had hoped to be listening to a CSP since early this year. But the continued development of Squeeze-on-Arch and Johns comment referenced above make me think that the project is not dead yet just resting (and hopefully gathering strength!). It was frustrating when Community Squeeze died as I was contemplating purchasing a Wandboard. I currently use a Vortexbox Mini with usb dac and control it with a Ipeng. I also have a wireless PiCoreplayer in the kitchen, attached to a Squeezebox Boom. Both fulfil my needs and use the latest Community Server. As a result I no longer need my Touch. So unless the plethora of recent softwares and devices can better this, I shall just stick with what I have. I'm also unsure that the recent Community Squeeze collapse isn't related to a move to a more commercial venture. If you have a dac addition that is remarkable sounding, why would you not wish to profit from it? For users who want a cheap high-end solution. If the DAC John has been designing sounds as good as he believed it would it's going to be considerably better than any cheap external USB DAC. 2. For users who want something that looks nice and can be accepted by other family members who doesn't like an ugly DIY box with cables and other stuff all over the place. 3. For users who never would consider a DIY solution that involved running Linux commands, writing SD card images to SD cards, manually assembling the device or purchasing the different parts from different places. However, you are correct that Squeeze on Arch are very useful without any extra hardware, it already fulfils point 1 to some level and with a nice looking box it can easily also fulfil point 2. Point 3 is going to be more challenging unless someone is willing to assemble the already existing hardware components and sell them as a pre-installed box, but this requires a separate Squeeze on Arch license since the current Squeeze on Arch license is restricted to non commercial usage. The initial installation is currently a bit more complicated than Community Squeeze was, but this is partly because Triode currently want to avoid distributing SD card images to minimise the risk of getting into similar legal troubles as the previous Community Squeeze project. The future will tell if we eventually can reach a stage where we also have some hardware which can come with Squeeze on Arch more or less pre-installed. As with all community projects, it's important to understand that almost everyone(probably all) involved are working in the project on their spare time, due to this I think we should be realistic and accept that it's going to take a bit of time. For people who are in a hurry and can't wait, there is always Sonos and similar solutions available already today. If you are referring to the hardware part, my feeling is that JohnSwenson and Triode are investigating what the best path forward is going to be to avoid similar legal/liability issues as those which hit the previous (now dead) Community Squeeze project. Typically these kind of things can take a bit of time to arrange. At the very first level, a Squeezebox replacement player that it considerably less DIY than a solution like you mention. Only so many people are capable of (or willing to) roll up their sleeves and assemble a player like you've outlined. If it can be done and sold for a reasonable price, then the number of people who use the Squeezebox system and its software in the future would likely be many times what it will be if DIY is the only option. Yes, going for Linux would shave a lot off the potential price, if you are familiar with setting it up. In the case of the RPi, I think the limiting factor is the case. There are so many potential configurations that, unless a case is provided by the maker of the add-in board you are left with DIY solutions. Personally I will be going for one of these for my next project which is a DAC with a bespoke case available for it: https://www.tindie.com/search/?q=IQaudIO.com UK based but priced in dollars, so they clearly know about shipping abroad. However, analogue RCA output only. You can get the RPi in the USA from here: http://www.newark.com/raspberry-pi/raspbrry-modb-512m/model-b-assembled-board-only/dp/43W5302 They also sell an "all in one" Wolfson sound card for the RPi with analogue RCA, SPDIF, line in, line out and shared microphone / headphone: http://www.newark.com/element14/wolfson-audio-card/audio-card-for-use-with-raspberry/dp/07X2281 If there is not a case yet, there probably will be soon. Otherwise you may need to make up a DIY solution. Now there's a challenge! Good luck. Right now I'm running my LMS on a 2011 Mac Mini, which is very robust for the purpose :-) In the past, I've used a NAS and a Squeezeplug to run LMS, and the instability drove me nuts. The NUC should be up to the task, but I'm in the "if ain't broke, don't fix it" category regarding LMS right now. I was thinking I could get into a NUC (incl memory, small SSD, Linux etc.) for under $250. But, as you stated, it borders on overkill. I am still very much interested in a Hifiberry + SPDIF card + proper case + piCorePlayer, however I am in the US, so I couldn't find any easy/cheap way to get all three shipped to me. Yes, I had looked at the NUC, and other similar mini-computers - but dismissed them mainly thanks to Steen and his brilliant (and free!) piCorePlayer Linux distro for Squeezebox. I have just built a complete Squeezebox "Player" from a Raspberry Pi based on this for £60 ($90) including case, SD card, wi-fi dongle, power supply and audio cables. One major advantage of this setup is that piCorePlayer is pre-configured to get audio out of a Raspberry Pi - and nothing else. This means that it took about 10 minutes to build and 10 minutes to set up. An absolute doddle. If I want to make it "hi-fi" there are now supported I2S DACs and digital out cards (to supply an external DAC) that can be attached for another $50 or so. You can also go down the slightly more fiddly route of a USB DAC but support for that is rather more hit and miss. Once you have it running, it is quite possible to adopt the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" maxim and just leave it to play the music. I find that if I don't fiddle with stuff that I rarely need to "troubleshoot". Remember a NUC does not come with memory, storage or an operating system. I am assuming you are not au-faix with setting up your own Linux installations and will therefore need to buy a copy of Windows. That, of course, will need a sizeable hard drive for the OS (piCorePlayer fits on a single 1GB SD card!). I reckon, with Windows, you will not get much change from $400. Of course the resulting computer will be capable of very much more than piCorePlayer on a RPi. You could use it as an LMS server and/or the hub of a complete media center if you wanted, so it really does depend on what you need it for. With the other options made available at the moment, a NUC is complete over-kill for a simple player. If, like me, you just need a couple more "headless" players like the Receiver then the RPi running piCorePlayer is just the job. Gadgety1 wrote: > Could you supply a reference for that claim? Personal experience of JTAG pin jigs at work. They have spring loaded pins with either sharp points or rounded ends that make contact with flat PCB pads. All gold plated. They make good contact initially, but if I leave one assembled on the jig after a few months the debugger stops working. I have to slacken the mounting pillars and move the connections about to get a clean contact. If they're really bad I have to clean then with alcohol. I note that the Wolfson fitting instructions say you should clean the PCB holes with alcohol to get a good connection. My first thought was "and how long before that needs doing again?".
