I've said it before and I'll say it again...seeing a triple bill last summer of Creedence, STYX and the Doobies ranks up there to me as the best total night of music I've seen with the band. Australian Doobies
I made an interesting discovery today on e-bay, looking for Doobies stuff. There is an Australia-only release of the band's music. I got all excited when I saw a few unfamaliar song titles until I thought them through a little bit longer. Take a look at this list of album tracks. Who am I?
Here's my two-cents worth about who I am. Yes, my actual name is Thor. My grandparents were immigrants from Norway and I'm named after some shirt-tail relative back here. In Norwegian mythology, Thor is the God of Thunder, so be careful. Don't piss me off. I live in Monticello, Minn., about 45 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. I'm actually just a half a block off of the Mighty Mississippi, so each clear night I have a "Mississippi Moon" shining down on me. I'm 39, single and work as the editor of a monthly non-profit newspaper for senior citizens in the Twin Cities. Beyond the band, my other passion is Minnesota sports teams, particularly the Vikings, who always find a way to break my heart at the end of each season. My introduction to the Doobies came through high school football my freshman year. On of the senior captains had control of the locker room stereo and only allowed two choices: Frampton or the Doobies. Our harmonies in the shower to "Black Water" were a lot better than our efforts together out on the field. One of my other all-time favorite Doobie moments came following the conclusion of the "Farewell Concert" tour in St. Paul. The arena was connected to a parking ramp via a tunnel, and as everyone filtered out, this chant of "Doobies, Doobies, Doobies," sprung up and echoed thunderously throughout the tunnel. I'm so looking forward to making my first-ever convention this summer and finally attach some real faces to these names that I've become familiar with over the three-or-so years I've been part of this group. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Doobies in letter to editor
I was perusing the letters to the editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune and there's a rant about the shut down of an alternative music station. Here's part of what the letter writer had to say: "As for me, this young man's mother, I'm 46 years old and extremely tired of listening to the stuff I listened to in high school -- old Eagles and old Stones and the three most popular songs from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album. I sometimes flip from station to station these days, trying to find something interesting to listen to, and it's like Dueling Doobie Brothers Day in Minnesota." I'm calling the governor right now to have Dueling Doobie Brothers Day made an official Minnesota holiday. Four flushed
If you've been following our little game, it isn't a huge surprise that "Stampede" is the next album voted off the list. But the margin is quite closer than the conventional wisdom might have run. Stampede charged out to a big lead through the middle of round nine returns. But Toulouse Street streaked back into close contention over the final few ballots. The final returns: Stampede: 14 Toulouse Street: 10 Vices: 5 Captain and Me: 1 We had a record number 31 participants in this round! And while these last rounds have been grueling to most participants, that agony has led to some very creative comments with the votes. Here's a sampling from this round (names have been omitted to protect the innocent): Isn't it great that no Doobie Brother has inhaled and fallen into a campfire like poor Mike on the Survivor show!! Well, What Were Once Vices, Are Now (old) Habits. It is time to teach this old dog some new tricks. I need a new Vice, this one is going bye-bye. I Imagine "Stampede" will be leaving next, unless of course, "Toulouse" Passes out in front of the fire and falls in, then has to be airlifted outta there! I vote for Toulouse, Mr. Latrec! Hey groovers the sibling rivalry proved to intense and saw another quality title drop from contention. Will he survive ,will he cheat the hangman, what use will his story-telling be now ? VH-1 promotion of BTM
Here's the full promotion for the Doobies Behind the Music show on VH-1's website, including all the airings over the next two weeks: One of America's most popular bands in the 1970s, California's Doobie Brothers personified post-hippie celebration and counterculture fraternity. They took it to the streets with 11 gold albums (eight of which reached the top five on the charts), rocked with a dozen top 10 singles (two of which hit No. 1), and won four Grammy Awards. However, as the '70s came to a close, the mellow vibe and innocuous "doobie" smoking turned into harder drugs, nearly crushing the band. After releasing their most successful album, Minute by Minute, in 1979, they finally broke up in 1982, only to reunite in the late '80s. Today, the group, minus vocalist Michael McDonald, continues to tour and spread the trademark feel-good message of its music. Re: Behind The Music
I went into the show expecting that I'd know it all already between the years of being a fan, the comprehensive history that was part of the box-set package and from being a member of this list. But I, too, learned a lot of new stuff about the band. I especially liked the footage of the guys on the river for a 'Black Water' promo. The other striking thing, how the commercial successes of "Black Water" and the "Minute By Minute" album came out of nowhere in the band's eyes. I thought it was a very comprehensive report and that the guys were very open about the personal challenges they've dealt with along the way of letting us "Listen to the Music." --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Rocking Horse radio
Late last night, around 2 a.m. to be more exact, I'm listening to the Twin Cities' premier classic rock radio station and all of a sudden, this familiar riff started rumbling through the speakers. For a moment I'm confused. I've heard this before but never on the radio. But my momentary disorientation soon drifts away as I realize that it can be only one thing: "Rocking Horse." It's the first time I've heard an offering from SR on any of the local radio stations. I don't know if it's officially on the play list or just the personal choice of a DJ whose shift is unencumbered by restrictions of the daytime play list. Any way, maybe it's the ripple that's the start of a tidal wave to 2002 Grammy recognition for our guys. BTW: In post Grammy reflections about Steely Dan's big night, I now recall that that band is really responsible for getting me hooked on the Doobies. Aja was one of my favorites in high school and then Steely Dan had the title track to the FM movie soundtrack. I picked that album up and discovered this wonderful tune on it called "It Keeps You Running," which led me to get the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits which opened my ears to all the goodies that the Doobs had to offer. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

Re: Steely Dan wins!
It was fun to see Steely Dan win two of the top prizes. As mentioned earlier, they have strong Doobie ties. Looking through the VH1 TV listings for the upcoming Behind the Music, I saw somewhere that they're going to be replaying Steely Dan's Storytellers episode. I saw it earlier this summer, and it's must see. The music is top-notch, but the between-songs banter between Becker and Fagin is absolutely hillarious and educational. It's worth seeking out if the show is running close to one of the Doobie shows. Because of their wittyness on that show, I was so surprised to see them be so quiet and meek in accepting their awards last night. All I could think was that they never expected that they'd actually be standing in the winner's circle. I have a hunch they'll be selling a few copies of "Two Against Nature" in the coming week. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

Whole lot of shaking going on
Round four Doobie Brothers Surivor results are in and they're pretty overwhelming. Let's cut away to our New Zealand correspondent, Greg Parlane, to get this round's report. "Round 4 sees that "Livin on the Faultline" has indeed proved to be a hazardous location. That icon of Northern Californian commerce,The TransAmerica building, topples into the ocean as the insatiable Pacific slowly devours the rugged Californian coastline. "As you can see from the my wordy vote there ain't much on TV tonight. Seriously, this is truly tough going as this album contains some of the Doobies best McDonald influenced material. "There's a Light", "It Ain't Nothin but a Heartache", You Know You're Made that Way",and the title cut." With 26 votes cast, "Fault Line was the choice of 11 participants, making it the fourth album headed for banishment in or quest for the all-time surviving Doobie Brothers effort. Round five should prove very interesting as there was no clear-cut runner-up as there have been in previous rounds. Here are the offitical vote tallies from round four: Fault Line -- 11 Cycle -- 5 Stampede, Minute By Minute and Sibling Rivaly -- 3 eaach Touslouse Street -- 1 Voters come and voters go. We had one very public defection earlier this week, but you're welcome to jump in or out at anytime in this process. I'm setting round five's deadline for Thursday night. Let's speed this up. Doobie Brothers Survivor -- Round 3 victim
The reviews are in and here's what people are saying about Doobie Brothers Survivor: Gosh this is hard! Personally, my fave is The Captain and Me, but then I would swap that in a minute to be stuck on the island with Sandra Bulloch. The most fun I've had on the list for sometime. Round 3 sees us bidding farvel to "Brotherhood"...sniff,sniff And now.under the category of flesh wounds.. Stampede is my next vote.. oh that hurts... It's gonna start to get interesting soon! Yes, that's what your friends and neighbors have been saying about this contest. Those are actual comments from actual participants in round three of this elimination test of all Doobie tunes. So without further ado, who's off the island this time? In the closest voting we've seen yet, "Brotherhood" take a fall this week, being mentioned by 10 of the 28 voters participating. It narrowly edged ahead of "Living on the Fault Line," the choice of nine voters. Other votes totals in this round include: Three votes for Stampede Two votes each for "Takin' It To the Streets," "Cycles" and "Sibling Rivalry" What can we surmise from the three rounds of voting so far? There don't appear to be any weak points in the Doobies' discography. The three albums banished span the band's entire spectrum. Also, it's a genuine mix of interest and agony that folks participate in this process. It's never too late to join in. Out of contention now are "The Doobie Brothers," "One Step Closer" and "Brotherhood." Still in contention are: "Toulouse Street" "The Captain and Me" "Vices" "Stampede" "Taking It To the Streets" "Living on the Fault Line" "Minute By Minute" "Cycles" "Sibling Rivarly" The end of round four will be Monday evening. RE: non doobie - thank you
Steve: Last July on the opening night of Moondance Jam here in Minnesota, STYX was on stage right before the Doobies closed the show. I have to admit I was a bit worried that after the high-action, theatrical performance that STYX put on, it might be hard for the Brothers to top them. But of course, superior music always wins out and the Doobs gave us a great finish. I don't think that the two bands were actually touring together, however, as the Doobies played a casino solo in the Twin Cities the night before and about a month later, STYX played the Minnesota State Fair with REO Speedwagon. All in all, that opening night was one of the best days of music I've ever encountered. A local band opened followed by Leon Russell, Creedance Clearwater Revisited, STYX and then the Doobies. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

...and first off the island is...
I am very sorry about the delay on the official results from the first round of Doobie Brothers Survivor, but I had someone in Florida count up the results and that's why it took so long. Well, no, actually I had a last-minute opportunity to go to Jamaica for a long weekend. BTW: It was my first visit to Jamaica. Talk about your "doobie" brothers down there! Anyway, what you're really interested to know is what original content album was voted off the island last week by fan club members. It was a very tight race through the early going, but a late surge made a clear-cut choice for banishment. And it was very surprising to me. The first album victim of Doobie Brothers Survivor is."The Doobie Brothers." Of the 26 fan club members who participated in the first week's effort, nine selected the band's debut album for banishment. More than double the runner-up. Here are the full results from week one: "The Doobie Brothers" -- 9 "One Step Closer" --4 "Living on the Fault Line" -- 3 "Brotherhood"-- 3 "Vices" -- 2 "Stampede" -- 2 "Minute By Minute" -- 2 "The Captain and Me" -- 1 "Toulouse Street" -- 0 "Takin' It To the Streets" -- 0 "Cycles" -- 0 "Sibling Rivalry" -- 0 I promise to stay close to home this week and will take nominations through Saturday for the second ablum for banishment. Our version will be much simpler. no one will be asked to eat any rats. And we won't tolerate anyone sitting around naked. Here's how the game will work: Each week, list members will be asked to "vote off the list" one orignial content Doobie Brothers album. After 11 weeks, we will have whittled the list down to the fan club's most favored album. Since it would be pretty easy to "like" the greatest hits or live albums, they've been eliminated right off the bat. Only original content albums are in the running. In the interests of building suspense, send your weekly replies directly to me, not the list. Each Monday morning, I'll post which album has been voted off and a new round of balloting will take place. Knowing our devotion to all the band's music, this will likely become a very difficult task. But it also should be a lot of fun. Here is the list of week one's albums (randomly ordered) for consideration. Which one will be the ultimate survivor? List controverseys
My two cents worth (again): One of the criticisms leveled by the nattering nabobs of negativism who spark these list controversies is that they just want to talk about the music. Yet, their negative attitude runs 10-degrees opposed to the total optimism delivered in each Doobies song. My advice--the next time you read someting from this list that you think is immaterial, before hitting reply and spewing forth with words that might be hurtful, play some Doobies tunes and see if that works to change your perspective. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

Re: This is gettin' rediculous!
One of the best classes I ever had in college was on group dynamics. In fact, I think I use the information gained there more often in all facets of life than anything else I shucked out tuition bucks for. And this e-mail group is a classic example right up and down the line of how groups work. There are leaders and followers, those who speak out and those who hold back, those who agree and those who differ. In essence, the Doobie Brothers and their music is what brought all together in this community. Along the way, we learn other things about each other and want to celebrate that among ourselves. In our every-day lives, we associate ourselves with groups (workmates, friends, neighbors) that first brought us together in just one way. Over time, those connections evolve and expand. If we don't like the way they're heading, we find new places of association. One thing I do know is that over their 30-year history, the Doobie Brothers haven't solely given us their music. They've given their time and talents to help with a host of worthwhile causes. It's that spirit that I think the fan club has strongly gravitated toward in recent years. Do I relish each and every posting to the list? No. And I don't expect every fan club member to gush over something I post. But I do know that I relish being able to have a place to turn to hear from like-minded souls as myself. It's all part of being a piece of a community. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

Scrooge review
Gang: Here's the Doobie's portion of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune review on Friday's show in St. Paul. Take your blood pressure pills before proceeding.--Thor -- Also appearing on the KQ Christmas Concert were the Doobie Brothers, who played too much new generic material (imagine Crosby, Stills Nash meets smooth jazz) and failed to perform "What a Fool Believes," one of the biggest hits. Patrick Simmons took the lead vocals formerly sung by Michael McDonald, who is no longer with the band, and Tom Johnston's voice sounded rough. Still, the Doobes created the good-time vibes of old on "Listen to the Music," which turned into a spirited communal sing-along.--John Bream BTW: Mr. Bream's e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you care to challenge his observations. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
St. Paul show preview
Here's what the local rag had to say about tonight's show in St. Paul: Minneapolis Star/Tribune: Guess Who, Doobie Brothers play Xcel Energy Center If it worked for six weeks in Canada this summer, the Guess Who reunion should be able to play in the States, eh? The '70s rockers were from Winnipeg, so it was big news when Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman reunited to reprise "American Woman," "No Time," "No Sugar Tonight," "Share the Land" and "These Eyes." Maybe Cummings will do his 1976 solo hit, "Stand Tall," and Bachman will do BTO's "Takin' Care of Business." The current incarnation of the Doobie Brothers doesn't include vocalist/keyboardist Michael McDonald, but these good-time rockers will do all their hits anyway -- "What a Fool Believes," "Black Water," "Takin' It to the Streets" and "Listen to the Music," all of which seem to get as much radio airplay in 2000 as they did in the '70s. $14.92-$65.-- Jon Bream _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
You want reviews, you got reviews
Here's your fair warning. This isn't going to be short, but it will be very sweet. In summary, the Doobies absolutely scorchedSt. Paul, Minn., on a bitter cold night. An aside: I believe this is the first Doobies show I've experienced wearing long pants (insert your own joke here). They only usually swing through here in the summer but more on that later. It was with a lot of nostalgia that I entered the Xcel Energy Center tonight. That's because 18 summers ago, that was the very same location where I witnessed "The Farewell Tour" concert. In those days, the place was the St. Paul Civic Center. In the name of progress and to get a new pro hockey team here, that place was torn down and ritzy, arena with a corporate name filled the old footprint. It's a new, glorious building that's the anchor for revitalizing downtown St. Paul. How ironic it was that the Doobies should return as only the third concert that the spanking new building would hold. After tonight's show, I don't know if they'll be able to play hockey there tomorrow. The guys were so hot the ice had to have evaporated away. The place was jammed, I'm guessing 14-16,000. That's because it was the annual holiday concert put on by one of the local classic rock stations. And also, the reunited Guess Who were the evening's closers. I didn't stick around for them, having totally exhausted myself on the Doobs. This was the third show the guys have played in Minnesota in less than six months. And I've had the good fortune to see them about 10 times now. And this was absolutely the best synergy between band and crowd I've ever experienced, with the possible exception of the farewell concert. Any, getting down to the details. John's gotten a significant hair cut since the summer stage of the tour. Miss Gina, I have to inform you that Mr. Smooth came on stage in very GQ fashion, sporting a Kelly green jacket. It only stayed on until about midway through Road Angel. And it was during JIJA that I knew something special was happening this night. A conga line of about five guys in motorcycle jackets wound its way through the main floor. I had my first-ever Pat in the crowd experience during his final solo in Dangerous. I had an aisle seat but unfortunately he was on the other side of the section. The new songs were overwhelmingly greeted with great response. In fact, several people around us were singing along, which really surprised me. People Gotta Love Again came right after JIJA, which worked very well. Also, the opening of it was much more acoustic until the first stanza, when we were hit with a solid wall of Doobies harmonies. Rocking Horse was next. Played under mostly purple lights, listening to Skylark's groovin' bass line made me think that he could might just be able to out funk that diminutive little native funkster from these parts. It was during the intro to Five Corners that we got some commentary from guitarist/meteorologist Pat Simmons. "This is Hawaiian slack key. We thought we'd play it tonight since it feels so much like Hawaii." His usually low-key between song patter was absent again when he introduced Marc Russo, noting that he's the guy playing that thing that sounds like a car horn. In introducing the fourth new song played, Don't Be Afraid, Pat called it Doobie fusion. It was especially cool to see the looks of pride and gratitude on the guys' faces when the new numbers were so warmly received, especially knowing that they're getting no radio air play here. Mine, and others, hopes of hearing a Doobies Christmas selection were not met, but that was the only minor disappointment of the night. And it was more than made up for by the way the guys fed off the crowd's energy at took things to another plane. This holiday season, I haven't had that one special thing that I want to receive as a Christmas gift. When asked what I want for Christmas, my response has been to enjoy good times with friends and family. Well, Santa Doobie certainly delivered the goods to 14,000 Twin Citians Friday night. Thanks guys for one of the best Christmas gifts I've ever received. --Thor _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

Michael McDonald on Letterman last night
Hey gang: I got online late today and can't believe there hasn't been a post on this yet. But last night, Michael McDonald was the guest artist to sit in with the band on Late Show with David Letterman. He was actually sharing space in the keyboard pit with Paul Schaffer. After the first break, Dave actually took more time than usual to chat with Michael. And Paul shared the fact that Mike wrote the theme to Dave's first show, a short-lived morning talk show on NBC during the summer of 1980. They even played the ditty, which wasn't more than four or six bars that just kept repeating. Then Paul tried to do his vocals imitation of Michael for the piece. But the best part was Dave asking Mike about the Doobies and what they're up to lately. Mike plugged the new album and said that they're on the road. "So are you still a Doobie?" asked Dave. "Sometimes," said Mike. "I'm like that drunk that sometimes wanders on stage. I still have my lifetime membership card." The band did intros and outros to the segments with a lot of Mike Doobie and solo hits during the night. But there was no musical segment in the show featuring him. Still, t was a great surprise. I only wish I would have been alert enough to tape the thing. --Thor _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: NEW CD
Well Andy, at least you're very honest. Watch out for the incoming arensel of reactions to your reaction to the album. But from what I read on the website info page in connection with the new album, you're two main guys are very much at peace with what they've done no matter what others think. Here are their direct quotes from the website (doobiesinfo.com): Johnston: "At this point with this album I'm not going to worry about it, whatever happens, happens. I'm certainly hoping that we have success with it, but if not then I guarantee you that we'll still be making our music." Simmons: "I don't have any illusions about being a 50-year-old rock star. If someone likes what we've done and buys it great. If they don't I can easily say that I'm living the dream." Personally, I know that a lot of the messages in the songs have hit the same chords of things I've been wondering/concerned about lately. And for that reason, I've quickly felt a pretty strong attachment to this work than I have with some of the band's other recent offerings. I guess we'll have to agree that we disagree on this. --Thor _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Minnesota reviews (sorry if it's too long)
Hey gang: While I'm physically back in reality, my head is still soaring somewhere in Doobieland after two incredible nights of concerts in Minnesota last week. This was my first-ever back-to-back Doobie experience and I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive. Would it be too much of a good thing? In one simple word, no. Wednesday night at Mystic Lake Casino in a smaller, cabarat-type venue, it took a dousing of "Black Water" to get the crowd on its feet. Part of the reason, probably, was that about half of the crowd were boat dealers attending a convention at the casion complex. By the end of the night, most were sold on the Doobies. The next night in tiny Walker (pop. 950) about 200 miles northest of Minneapolis, the Doobies closed the first of three classic rock nights at Moondance Jam in front of a crowd estimated at 25,000. By the time they hit the stage after 11 p.m., the crowd was well-lubricated to rock from the start. Do you know how to spell jam? It's D-O-O-B-I-E-S. In the 90-minute set, I think there were just two numbers that were straight replayings of the originals. Each and every number featured incredible solos, new intros and/or closings. And bigger and better things are happening on the traditional "family finale." It was a perfect cloudless night with a near full moon beaming down. During "Black Water," I couldn't help think about what a better setting in which to hear that song, a mere 40 miles from the spot where the Mississippi starts its meanderings. Snapshots of the nights: Pre-Thursday perfomance while the stage was being set up, you could see Pat and Mark warming up and jamming in the back of the equipment truck backed up to the stage. Tommy "in the zone" while singing or playing a solo? The look of glee on John's face while picking acoustic style with Pat. Mark's perfect puncuation marks to each song with his screaming sax. There is a meaner, leaner dude than John Shaft: he's Skylark. By the way, I corralled one of his picks. * The steady, percolating rhythms set down by Big Mike and Keith. The look of total pride on Pat's face as he shared the stage with his son for LTTM. Straight from the horse's mouth, Pat said at the end of the shows that the new album should be out in a couple months. Do they pay attention to the posting of this fan club? I'm not sure but some of the songs requested by our members are part of this year's show. The three-day jam experience was combined with morning biking affairs, but the Doobies kept popping up in the strangest places. The morning after the show, we pedaled on an resurfaced railroad line. LTR kept running through my mind as we pedaled along. The next day at Itasca State Park, where the Mississippi headwaters are located, we picked to a 100-foot high fire tower. Climbing to the top and gazing across the skies, what should we see? An big, brown eagle soaring on the updrafts. It was also great to see the boys more than hold their own against a line-up of 12 other national acts over the three days. Their excellence and professionalism stuck out like a sore thumb compared to some of the other acts. That concludes the Doobies portion of this piece. Feel free to quit here, but I did want to give my report card on the efforts of the Moondance Jammers. Of course, the Doobies earned an A-plus on my scale. "A" -- STYX -- Great theatrical presenation. Good music. Great version of "Tush" as part of the encore --Frampton -- He came alive again --Kenny Wayne Shepard -- the second coming of Stevie Ray Vaughn? -- George Thorogood -- can you believe he did several songs about drinking? "B" -- Creedence -- efficiently pleasing the crowd with all the hits, but not taking a lot of musical chances -- Leon Russell -- didn't realize how many songs of his I recognized -- Paul Rodgers -- big voice for a little guy -- The Knack -- gave up a hot rendition of "Tequila" "C" --The Beach Boys -- plagued by techical problems plus Mike Love is the only recognizable "boy" in the ban. -- Joe Walsh -- closing act for night 2, he lost most of the crowd before he got around to his hits. -- NRBQ -- who are these guys? They'll play any type of music. "F" -- Leslie West of Mountain --Argued with fans between songs and complained how far he had to travel to get to the gig. Professionalism? What's professionalism? --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Oh, one more thing
I forgot to add one more incredible Doobie experience from the weekend. It was actually the last night of the jam, and between acts on the mainstage, there are several tents on the grounds featuring regional bands. It was there that I heard Rockin' Dopsy Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters play a cajon-flavored version of LTTM. And you know what? It really worked. They're a band from Louisana. Any of you Cajun Doobie fans heard of them before? Anyone know how I can track down one of their discs? --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
A question and a countdown
A quick question that I don't believe has ever been discussed by this group. The writing credit for "Without You" simply lists the Doobie Brothers as the creators of that song. Was that a complete group effort? Just curious. Well, now it's less than three days until the kick-off of my first Doobie double-header. The guys have the stage to themselves Wednesday night at Mystic Lake Casino. Thursday, they're the final act of night one of the Moondance Jam festival in Walker. Get a load of the line-up on the main stage for the three-day music fiesta: Thursday ~ July 13 3 P.M. PART OF THE TRIBE 5 P.M. LEON RUSSELL 7 P.M. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVISITED 9 P.M. STYX 11 P.M. Set lists, etc.
Last fall I had my first Bruce Springsteen concert experience--three-plus hours of non-stop performance. I wish I was more of a fan of his to really appreciate the experience. Anyway, that led me to my dream concert experience of a three-plus-hour Doobies jam, maybe with some of the band alumni taking part. There's certainly enough material. And I'd be willing to shell out some big bucks for such a Doobie-fest. If I remember right, the Farewell Tour was such an experience even with an intermission. I also understand how it's not practical to put on such a performance each and every night of a tour. The problem that the band faces these days as a "retro act" is that it has to provide a concert experience with appeal to a wide audience at an affordable price as compared to other groups. That's my two-cents worth. --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Skunk for Congress
During the winter, there was news making the rounds that Skunk was going to run for Congress, I think in California. Does anyone know if that's still the case? Evidently, he's very knowledgable about defense and nuclear issues. --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Doobies on The Man Show
I don't know if anyone else saw this, but the other night on Comedy Central's "The Man Show," a mention was made of the band. Talking about the differences between men and women, the hosts pointed out that women have a lot better memory. "Women can remember everything, right down to the slightest detail," the one host said. "Guys, all we can remember are sports statistics and lyrics to Doobie Brothers songs," replied the other. I know that certainly applies in my case. --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

I was clicking through e-bay this morning looking at Doobie memorabilia up for sail and came across a rare German import CD of the band playing live in 1987. Minnesota update
Hey gang: I've been incommunicato for a while with some ISP problems, but am getting caught up on half a week's worth of e-mails this afternoon. Just thought I'd share a couple great Doobie hits from the week. 1. Our distinguished wrestler-turned-governor has become buddy-buddy with President Clinton regarding opening up trade with China. In fact, he left the state in the final days of the legislative session to go out to D.C. for a big meeting on the matter, leading to some local disgruntlement. Anyway, it led one of the morning radio jocks to put together the concept that Jesse Ventura will be touring with the Doobie Brothers this year to sing "O oh China trade." 2. While browsing through the record section at Barnes and Noble, I stumbled across a solo album by Cornelius Bumpus. Of course I had to pick it up. It's a departure from the typcial Doobies/Steely Dan works he's been a part of in the past. It's more cool jazz and smooth blues. But he does to a cover of "Takin' It To the Streets" and also Steely Dan's "Chain Lightning." There's also a pretty groovy cover of "I'll Take You There." My guess would be to look for the CD in the jazz section. I only came across it because it was on one of those listening post locations where you can actually preview the music on headphones before you buy it. --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Re: Story Tellers
I did catch Steely Dan and Cornelius last night. It was a delightful show and Cornelius was looking especially slim and svelte. The banter between Donald Fagin and Walter Becker was fantastic. I was just imagining what types of tales "our boys" could share in a setting like that. --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
No Doobies on We Fest website
I just checked out the We Fest website and there is no mention of the Doobies. That's just fine with me, since We Fest features both kinds of music that people in outstate Minnesota like: country western. But the three-day weekend festival always books one rock roll act to provide some variety. The weirdest booking was a couple of years ago when they brought in Ray Charles. If you're into country music, however, it's the place to be. This year's headliners are Reba McIntire, John Michael Montgomery and Kenny Rogers. --Thor Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

LTR remix
One dance-mix version of LTR is the coda track to "Listen to the Music: The Very Best of the Doobie Brothers." It's the CD I keep at the office whenever I need a Doobies fix at crunch times. It has a copyright of 1993. The version I have of that actually has Japanese lettering on the CD spine and copies of the song lyrics in both English and Japanese, which is pretty interesting to look at. --Thor __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Pep band music
A while back, there was a discussion thread about strange places to hear Doobies songs. Well, this weekend I was watching some NCAA hockey playoff game on TV and one of the pep bands was playing a very strange rendition of "China Grove." RE: Doobie stories/Musician tales
If you listen closely to the words, JIJA is a strong testimonal song to those who believe in Jesus Christ. Of course, the hoity-toity people who have a negative impression of that song probably don't even want to listen to the words because of the screaming guitar tracks in the song. --Thor __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Re: The Doobies' music comes through when I need it most!
Last summer, I was taking a leap of faith in quitting my job at that time to go out looking full-time for another job. As I got into the car in the parking lot and turned the ignition key, the radio kicked in right at the start of "Listen to the Music." I couldn't think of a more inspirational song to hear at the time. Plus, my weeks of for job searching were great and it lead to a terrific new opportunity. --Thor __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

A Doobie reality
Hey folks: Driving home from work last night listening to one of the Twin Cities' classic rock stations, I couldn't believe my ears as it announced a new contest. I haven't been this excited about a radio promotion since I was like 13 or 14 years old. Here's the deal: It's called "Trippin' with the Doobies." It's a phone-in promotion when you hear a Doobies song played. The grand prize: tickets to all 14 Midwest stops by the band this summer along with a VW mini-bus to get you around. Needless to say, I'm staying close to the radio these days. I'm not sure if the station broadcasts over the Internet, so I don't if any long distance entries will be available. Winning this would be better than winning the Powerball. --Thor __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
