Re: [DX-NEWS] Please W3USS Info in which US State is located

2003-02-21 Thread Ron Notarius WN3VAW
W3USS isn't located in any state. It's the club station located in the
capital somewhere in Washington, DC (I don't know if it's still located at
the US Senate buildings or not). I don't recall if the District of Columbia
counts for "Maryland" for WAS purposes.

Re: [DX-NEWS] [DX-CHAT] Icom 756Pro & Heil headset Question?

2003-02-20 Thread Kelly Jones
Thanks to everyone that answered my question about my Icom/Heil
predicament. I've received mixed answers. Some say, yes it works, others
say no, but several mentioned there is DC voltage on the mic pin which
saturates the mic element.

I didn't realize this and suspect this might be problem, at least I'm
hoping so. I'm gonna try sticking a small cap in line to block the
voltage and see where that gets me. To everyone that did ask if I was
using the "adapter", yes and no. I homebrewed one, I was not using a
genuine Heil.

As promised subscribers of The Daily DX and The Weekly DX are the
first to know and try out the AH3D log search. I would personally
like to thank N4GN, Tim, for helping out with this process.

In order to check the AH3D log search you must do the following.

1. Send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
2. Subject: "Call" - only one call per subject line
3. body of message should be blank.
4. Send e-mail message

The process takes about 30-90 seconds. You will then receive a
response back, in the form of an e-mail, stating your QSOs that are
in
the AH3D log. If you find that you are not in the log please read
the
complete e-mail carefully.

Evening Charles, K4VUD:

Fortunately I found just the reverse of your bad luck. My timing must have
been just right on the AH3D fellows. I worked them on all bands, 160-10
Meters, and never spent more than 5 minutes on any band 80-10 Meters. It
took me two days on 160. Hi

My timing and luck must have been just right on this DXpedition.

In my opinion three operators have done an exceptional job with the lack of
sleep they have had.

Good luck with them on the bands you need them on !!

2003-01-27 Thread Tom Anderson
Rag:

The QSL route for PR0F is W5SJ:
Bill Priakos
424 Garrison
Fort Smith Arkansas 72901

I know about the interference. Bill and I were having a 20 meter QSO Sunday
morning on 14220 when he wasn't in the 160 contest and some stateside station
down below us was splattering 10 kcs. wide either side from his freq on
14210. If he'd just turned the mike gain down a bit he could have cured it,
but he wasn't interested in doing that.

I haven't heard PR0F's final 160 CW tally yet.

When are you going back to EP land?

Your description sounds a little like what we've dubbed "the Chicken"

bwuk bwawk". Did it sound like that?

I see that the addresses now are different in Buckmaster and QRZ,

REPEATING FOR THE LAST TIME... THE REFLECTOR CAN NOT PASS A VIRUS,
THEY COME FROM OUTSIDE THE REFLECTOR.

THIS BEING STATED AGAIN FOR YET AGAIN THIS YEAR.

Obviously, the request from both Urb and myself concerning virus
alerts continues to go unheeded or worse ignored.

It has been decided that since this is obvious becoming an
admistrative problem, the posting of virus alerts has been made the
Number 2 reason for being unsubscribed from the DXR right after use
of profanity.

A very harsh action but since some can't control their actions, Urb
and I must.

What a way to start the New Year

That being said, please enjoy your New Year, a happy healthy peaceful

RE: [DX-NEWS] ZK3SA???

2002-12-29 Thread Ken P. Eckel Jr.
Good trick I have used for years. ZK3SA is a different bird. No real
chrono pattern.
On and off days. He picks a band and works that band all day. I have
worked him
on the bands I need except 10M. I was out of town on that band day. The
QSO's I
had were because of brute force. I have been at the computer working
monitoring the DX
cluster around the clock. Sure would like to catch him on 10M and RTTY.

Good Luck,

I've been trying to track down the ZK3 now for a couple of weeks and here on

hear him (mostly on the WARC bands) the west coast has had all the

A little trick you might try is to type the following command on whatever

This will show you his operating habits for the last few days and what parts

RE: [DX-NEWS] VIRUS HOAX POSTS DONE

2002-12-23 Thread kc2jmy
Steve,

Re: the dozen posts...

You may not be aware but there were delays in the reflector that caused
delays in the posts during this time (check the message headers). Its
also very unlikely that the people who tried to warn others of the hoax
would have posted anything if someone else already had posted a warning
- I certainly would not have.

AV protection does not help at all when a user receives an email virus
hoax (usually from someone they know and trust) which tells them how to
clean up the "virus". You and I may know how to spot the hoax but there
are many folks who are simply trying to enjoy their hobby who don't and
I'm sure appreciate a heads up before they do damage to their PC and
advise others to do the same.

I think an even dozen posts all saying the same thing are moe than
sufficient, especially in light that 3/4's of them were well after
the 1st 1/4.

In other words, at 03:32 UTC on Sunday 12/22, the thread has run it's
course. Everyone now knows that this is a hoax, just as it was known
the 1st 4 times it was posted over the past 2 years.

RE: [DX-NEWS] If you have this on File (HOAX)

2002-12-23 Thread kc2jmy
Steve,

My concern was not with the orginator who had already fallen victim to
the hoax and possibly done whatever damage that the instructions asked
him to do to his computer.

My concern was for the many people on this list (and the many, many
people they may have forwarded the message to and the people they may
have forwarded it to, etc, etc).

Sounds like you would you have preferred that the latter group be
exposed to the hoax and resultant damage to their computers rather than
see the helpful folks on this list try and warn the potential victims.

2002-12-21 Thread Steve-KF2TI
> A virus has been passed on to me by one of my contacts.

Please note, yet again, that the posting of virus warnings, real or
in this case, hoax, is not an acceptable post here on the DXR.\ or
for that matter most of the other reflectors, amateur related or
otherwise

Once again, if you haven't realized the importance of safe computing
and use the necessary safeguards against the bad mans of the world,
the last thing you should be doing is announcing that you are
somewhat dense as to means of protecting your computer.

That being said, there is not reason to respond to the originator

Again, to all a happy and healthy

A virus has been passed on to me by one of my contacts. My address book
has in turn been infected. Since you are in my address book, there is a
good chance you will find it on your computer too. I followed the
directions below and eradicated the virus easily. Sorry for the
inconvenience. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe)is NOT detected by Norton
or McAfee anti-virus' systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before
damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the
address book , whether or not you sent e-mails to your contacts. Here's
how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it.. YOU MUST DO THIS I
found the teddy bear virus in my C drive 1. go to Start, Find or Search
option 2. In the file/folders option, the name:jdbgmgr.exe. Be sure you
search your C: drive and all sub folders and any other drives you may
have.4 Click the "Find Now" 5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the
name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT!! 6 Go to edit(on the menu bar) choose
"Select all" to highlight the file without opening it .7. Now go to file
(on the menu bar)and select delete. It will then go to Recycle Bin 8.Go
to the Recycle Bin and delete it there as well. IF YOU FIND THE
VIRUS,YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THAT THEY
CAN ERADICATE IT FROM THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS. To do this, a) open a new

Re: [DX-NEWS] If you have this on File

2002-12-21 Thread ronsue
Adam,

You should always treat this type of virus as suspect. I suggest you place
your trust with the major virus detectors.

This type of "virus" in all probability is a needed file that you have been
instructed to delete, and one that you will be adding back to your computer
in short order.

Ask yourself "Did this virus do damage to my computer? Or did I "find" it
based on the instructions provided"? Of course you dare not wait the 14
days . . . that's the "hook" in the scare.

A similar "virus scare" came out about 6 months ago.

Re: [DX-NEWS] If you have this on File

2002-12-21 Thread Jim Reid
>From the Symantec Norton Virus web site:

  Jdbgmgr.exe file hoax
  Reported on: April 12, 2002
Last Updated on: November 21, 2002 10:24:24 AM

This is a hoax that tries to persuade you to delete a legitimate
Windows file from your computer. The file that the hoax refers
to, Jdbgmgr.exe, is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java.
It may be installed when you install Windows.

NOTE: Recent version of this hoax take advantage of the recent
outbreak of the W32.bugbear@mm worm, and the fact that the
Jdbgmgr.exe file that is mentioned in the hoax has a bear icon.
The actual W32.bugbear@mm worm file is an .exe file and does
not have a bear icon.

The Windows Jdbgmgr.exe file has a teddy bear icon as
described in the hoax...

CAUTION: Jdbgmgr.exe, like any file, can become infected by
a virus. One virus in particular, W32.Efortune.31384@mm,
targets this file. Norton AntiVirus has provided protection against
W32.Efortune.31384@mm since May 11, 2001.

NOTE: If you have already deleted the Jdbgmgr.exe file, in most
cases, you do not have to reinstall it. The following is quoted
from the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Virus Hoax:
Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java (Jdbgmgr.exe) Is Not a
Virus (Q322993)."

2002-12-20 Thread John Warren
Has anyone talked LU1ZA into going to CW?
Or, is there another on CW op there or is anyone who operates CW scheduled
to go to S. Orkney?
TIA
Bill W5EC

Bill,

The supply ship goes there in about a month. They will be changing
ops - Jose is leaving, Hannibal arriving (don't know his home call).
So maybe you'll get lucky. Also Henry LU4DXU, an experienced
DXer/contester, will be on the ship, so he'll be there for a few
weeks.

Re: [DX-NEWS] ham DXpeditions also operating 11m?

2002-12-04 Thread John J Dize
This should have no bearing on future dxpeditions. These operations on 11
M have been going on for years and yerars. I started out in CB ...about
1969. Got my novice in 1990 and havent been on 11 M since. But, there are
a lot who are and all you have to do is listen on 27.500 sometime. This
type of illegal operations havent hurt ham radio in 35 years ,and it isnt
now.Ham radio is very strong and I am thankful to the handful of
operators who organize these dxpeditions to places where we would
normally never work. There have been some nice rare operations in the last
4 years, and I worked none of them on 11 Meters.

[POSSIBLE SPAM]:Re: [DX-NEWS] ham DXpeditions also operating 11m?

2002-12-03 Thread Jennings
Hi all
I was unaware of this activity and would agree with W3UR that operations
such as this "blurr" the distinction between legal Amateur radio activity
and illegal spectrum activity. Virus is perhaps not a strong enough word. It
is a cancer that could destroy our hobby in years to come. We are already
under attack from hundreds of thousands of unlicenced Asian and South
American interlopers using all our bands for personal communications.
Freebanding raises level of this illegal activity to our detriment.

Unfortunately, little can be done to stop operations such as this except by
using commercial sanctions to make our views known to any manufacturer that
supports that freeband operation. Lobbying the ARRL will help along with
individual amateurs and clubs taking a stand and withdrawing financial
support to dual DXpeditions which include Freebanding.

Re: [DX-NEWS] ham DXpeditions also operating 11m?

2002-12-03 Thread Scott Manthe
I'm not surprised that these DXpeditions are operating on 11 meters, after
all, they include greenstamps with their QSL requests, too. I'm sure those
contacts help defray the costs of of operating as much as amateur contacts
do. This is not to say I agree that they should be operating.

One way to assure that future operations from rare entities stay within the
letter of the law is for all licensed amateurs to refuse to contact or QSL
any expedition that operates outside the purviews of amateur radio, no
matter how rare the enitity. This would prove that all our sermonizing is
not just bluster and that we're willing to put our money where our mouths
are. We would soon find out just how important it is to be at the top of the
DXCC Honor Roll.

Perhaps W3UR can do some research on these rogue operations and their
sponsorship by a subsidiary of a major amateur radio manufacturer for a
future column- assuming any negative comments about an advertiser get past
his editors at QST.

Subject: [DX-NEWS] ham DXpeditions also operating 11m?

I am astonished by the number of ham DXpeditions who are also
operating on 11m 'freeband'.

For example, the recent ham DXpedition to The Gambia appears to
have also operated on 11m as 118AT/DX with freeband QSLs to
310AT102 (aka YL3CW). These callsigns apparently assigned by the
Alfa Delta organization in Italy.

I've heard that many, many other ham DXpeditions also fire up on
11m 'freeband' (Temotu, Chesterfield, East Timor, etc.). Icom
France is even financially supporting freeband DXpeditions which
means they must be selling a lot of ham gear to freebanders.

Casual Websurfing will reveal that the freebanders are perhaps
even more active than hams in mounting DXpeditions. And going to
places (like VU7, YVO, SV/a) that hams can't easily go. And
tagging along on a lot of ham DX outings.

Is this the DX equivalent of Napster? What does this mean for
our DXing hobby in the long run?

Re: [DX-NEWS] ham DXpeditions also operating 11m?

2002-12-03 Thread Kris Mraz
Bill,

I sent an email to Bill Moore asking what the DXAC's position was
on the validity of DXpeditions that operate freeband in light of
DXCC rule 12c. I haven't received a response yet. My belief is that
their QSLs should be disqualified and the ham operators on the
operation should be banned from the DXCC program.

To hear that legitimate manufacturers are supporting illegal
operations is disgusting.

Re: [DX-NEWS] [DX] XW0X

2002-12-02 Thread Ron Notarius WN3VAW
Bob,

When this first cropped up a few days ago, I heard from quite a few people
who are having trouble getting a card out of Hiro. A few implied (or flat
out stated their belief) that he's pocketing the IRC's and/or $'s for other
purposes.

All I can tell you, I followed his instructions as per his web site -- no
names on the address or return address -- and I used a 6x9 manilla envelope
(computer-generated QSL card I use is a touch too big for a #10 envelope)
with the flap taped shut. My card came back in about 10-11 weeks.

My suspicion is that a good percentage of the mail to him is being
permanently diverted before it ever reaches his hands. Perchance that is
why "no names" are requested on the envelopes; if the box is shared, maybe
the thieves are only diverting mail known to be going to Hiro.

Hi Pete,

Another question.. How did you get so lucky as to get a card from
XW0X?

I worked him on 5 Feb. 02 on 10 meters, SSB and also on 17 Feb. 02 on 10
meters,

CW. Both sent with the requested 2 IRC's, the later card also enclosing a

duplicate card for the 1st QSO. Nothing received in return yet.

If I get it, is it a "good contact"?

Also worked XW1HS on 10 in July and card was sent to E21EIC. Any

reports out there on these QSL's.

For ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE W5 Bureau I suggest you would fair better if

Dear Waldemar,

I know this wont make you happy but I think I heard recently that Ghis is
now very busy with his employment so perhaps that is the problem preventing
him from active QSLing.

In the past (a few years back), Ghis was a VERY GOOD QSLer.

However, I agree with you, that there are many people that could step in
and help. I hope Ghis will ask for help.

Hello John-ON4UN,

your message to Goran-SM4DHF let me hope that you can help me with
my QSL-ing problems with Ghis-ON5NT?

In late 1995 and in early 1996 I have received my D3T and 9Q5TT cards
from Ghis without any problem with a typical turnaround of 3..6 months.
But from 1997 on, no responses from Ghis anymore. Usually I have used
the address shown in the callbook (Flying Horse), on qrz.com, etc..
Always I have provided a SAE and 1..2 US Dollar Bills.

Let say, I have used a wrong postal address in the late nineties;
why the envelopes were not returned, because the belgian post
office could not deliver the envelopes, because of the wrong
address?

When I sent an eMail to Ghis, usually I have checked the latest
postings from Ghis via the DX-Reflector and used the address,
he has used for his postings. None of of my eMails were bounced;
so the eMail addresses were correct; my eMails were delivered to
him. But the results were: No response from Ghis.

Since 1994 I am visiting the HAMRADIO in Friedrichshafen, Germany
every year. I remember, in the late nineties, maybe in 1998, more
and more HAM's claimed very loud, that they have not received
anything from Ghis. Meanwhile I know some belgian HAM's also,
who are claiming, that they have not received anything from Ghis
via direct.

At the end of 2000 there was a big discussion on the DX-QSL
Reflector about Ghis. Many HAM's claimed, that they have not
received anything from Ghis. Some HAM's said, they never had any
problem with Ghis. Very, very strange the whole story. An italian
HAM, who was claiming about no response, suddenly received all cards
a short time later and an eMail from Ghis also. This italian HAM
gave me the eMail address from Ghis and I sent an eMail to Ghis.
The eMail was not bounced; the addresses was correct; the eMail
was delivered to him! I have a positive "Delivery Status
Notification" in my eMail archive! Guess: NO RESPONSE from Ghis!

For many years now I am subscribed to the DX- and the DX-QSL
Reflector's. I have a private eMail archive with thousands of eMails;
the totally size of the archive (always plain text) is more than
500 MB! If I would scan this archive searching for ON5NT, then
I would find many eMails from HAMs who are complaining about Ghis.

Yes, some have received their cards from Ghis in the last few
years without any problems, but also MANY HAM's HAVE NOT!
And I am speaking about the HAMs, who have sent direct
incl. SAE and $$'s!

Some questions:

1. Ghis has problems with the postal service in Belgium??? I don't
believe it, because Belgium is a country in Western Europe with
a modern and good working postal service!

2. Ghis has not enough time, because of his job or private problems,
to fulfill his QSL-Manager job? Maybe; but if so, why he is not asking
for some help? I am pretty sure, many belgian HAM's in his neighbor-
hood would be glad to help out

3. Ghis is receiving many, many requests. Why some requests are
answered in a few days/weeks/months and why some are not answered
after years? Are 1..2 $$ not enough for postage in Europe,
incl. QSL card printing costs??? Let me say it in this way:
Is there a special secret, I should know?

Very, very strange, believe me!!! As you can see, I am very
frustrated about the whole "Ghis-ON5NT-story".

BTW: I was one of the very first private person, who has supported
Peter-ON6TT with some money () for his Heard-Island project in
1996 and then in 1997. I am glad, that Ghis was not the QSL-Manager
for the VK0IR operation, believe me! I don't know, if I'll support
any activity of Peter-ON6TT direct or indirect anymore, because of
my bad experience with 5X1T cards (result: NIL, nothing, nada!!!).

Let me know, what you are thinking about all that? You should know,
I have received my callsign in 1969; I am not an unexperienced
youngster anymore.

Last but not least: I am missing cards for 5X1T, 9X4WW and EL2WW.

response from Ghis despite multiple submissions. There have, at times, been
very negative discussions and comments about Ghis on OH2AQ, by numerous
persons. Recently, several persons have stated that they will no longer work
a DX station if Ghis is the manager. This complaints are world wide, but
most vocal from Europe.

If any information can be obtained, please post it here.

Thanks

Tom

Re: [DX-NEWS] QSL EL2WW

2002-12-01 Thread Waldemar DK3VN
Hello John-ON4UN,

your message to Goran-SM4DHF let me hope that you can help me with
my QSL-ing problems with Ghis-ON5NT?

In late 1995 and in early 1996 I have received my D3T and 9Q5TT cards
from Ghis without any problem with a typical turnaround of 3..6 months.
But from 1997 on, no responses from Ghis anymore. Usually I have used
the address shown in the callbook (Flying Horse), on qrz.com, etc..
Always I have provided a SAE and 1..2 US Dollar Bills.

Let say, I have used a wrong postal address in the late nineties;
why the envelopes were not returned, because the belgian post
office could not deliver the envelopes, because of the wrong
address?

When I sent an eMail to Ghis, usually I have checked the latest
postings from Ghis via the DX-Reflector and used the address,
he has used for his postings. None of of my eMails were bounced;
so the eMail addresses were correct; my eMails were delivered to

Reflector's. I have a private eMail archive with thousands of eMails;
the totally size of the archive (always plain text) is more than

Hi,
there has been a lot of questions about QSL´s
I have been trying 3 times to get a card for EL2WW
via ON5NT. Have also sent several email to ON5NT and
also to the operator of EL2WW, ON4WW, but do not get any
response what so ever on mail or email?
Has anyone recently been able to get a card via ON5NT
or know other email addresses than the ones on QRZ.com

Must have been my lucky day...sent QSL + 2 IRCs (full name and address on
envelope) on 2 Feb 02 and received the card on 15 May 02. Only issue was
that when I looked at the card (only large yellow letters on black
background) I didn't remember working "X0MX"...rotated it 180 degrees and
there it was...XW0X, hi. Good luck all...if only Hiroo had a JA
manager...think of all the e-mail traffic that would cease!

Mark, ON4WW is employed by the UN in the World Food Program, among
other things was one of the operators putting YA5T on the air in
Afghanistan while he was there (all of those ops have now left the
country).

Perhaps his mail and email have a hard time catching up with him.

Hi Pete,

Another question.. How did you get so lucky as to get a card from XW0X?

I worked him on 5 Feb. 02 on 10 meters, SSB and also on 17 Feb. 02 on 10 meters,

As a former phone patch operator for MARS (Military Affiliate Radio
System) during Desert Storm/Shield I'm trying to keep this very
important
the program going. It's no secret that there are over 12,000 U.S.
 troops
in Kuwait. Hard to believe, but there are no Phone Patch Operators
there. I'm working on a possible way, with the help of Jim
Sylvester,
AAR2NP, the U.S. Army World Wide Phone Patch Coordinator, to
accomplish this, but need help.

I know this isn't the proper forum for this request but don't know
 where
else to turn. Please, if anyone knows the name, call sign, or email
address of any Ham, (who is an American Citizen;) military or
civilian
that is presently operating in Kuwait City. Send it to me or Jim
Sylvester [EMAIL PROTECTED] We will do our best do get that
ham
(if he/she so desires) certified as a U.S. Army Phone patch operator
to help us with this challenge. In the past 9K2ZZ and 9K2JH were
American Hams operating in Kuwait.
