[Dx4win] Need help Yaesu Mark 5 and DX4Win
I am having trouble setting up a Yaesu Mark 5 and DX4Win on a new Windows 7 computer. I had a discussion about this with Paul KK4HD this morning and he suggested this mailing list. Specifically: 1. On Preferences radio, the radio port is computer com1 (settings of 8 bits parity 2) connected to the CAT rs-232 receptacle on the Yeasu. It frequently times out, usually when I am entering a qso. 2. On Preferences cw, cw keying is set to dtr and ptt is set to rts on com1 (again). Is it correct to use com1 for both the radio port and cw keying and ptt? 3. For some reason the cw keyboard types the message being sent with the function key (example: cq cq) but there is no rf output. This forces me to send my call every time instead of simply pressing the F1 key to send N2LA - very cumberson. I also have a Rigblaster Plus but seem to have problems hooking it up. If you have any ideas on how to get this equipment working please let me know. If you want to talk about any ideas my cell phone is 512-301-7666. Socotra is due to wind up in 9 days so time is very short. Please help! [Dx4win] Can QSO times change in DX4Win?
I recently recovered my DX4Win qsos dating back from 1953 to April 2009. These were all in GMT time on a separate computer that was destroyed by a lightning strike. After recovering the .dxl file I purchased version 8.04 of DX4Win and installed it on a Windows 7 laptop. So far I have made no new qsos. Unfortunately I made an error when I setup DX4Win because the time is set for US Central time instead of GMT (Universal Coordinated Time now). My question: If I change the new laptop of GMT will that make any time change in my previous qsos? I know Windows is funny in how they handle the time and will make time changes in files, supposedly to accommodate businessmen who travel a lot. I would make sure DX4Win is not running when I make a time zone change. I'm afraid that changing the laptop time to GMT might affect the times on my many thousands of qsos. I don't care about the time/date on the actual .dxl file but I care very much about the times listed in the qso records. So ... as the villain repeated many times in the movie Marathon Man, IS IT SAFE?. Re: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?
Thanks very much for your most interesting post Pete. Indeed I had a bunch of devices including duplicates of the CyberPro PCI 4S 4 port serial board. Apparently I made an error when installing the board. One good thing is I found a second serial header on the motherboard. However I still have not gotten CAT to work. I'm going to swap in my spare Mark V - perhaps the CAT port is bad. I'll make a note of that clever devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 line. It will probably come in handy in the future. Jim thanks for the heads up on the many more com ports in DX4Win v8. It would have saved me a lot of trouble but when I saw the business of requiring Admin mode to install (and run?) and placing DX4W in the root directory (both big nonos for me) I lost interest. Also I'm running out of time to learn and convert data for DX4W 8. I have made 4 LOTW submissions but have just realized the ADI files that were signed and sent to ARRL only cover approx 3,000 qsos of my 16,000 qsos. I don't know what went wrong. Every qso of mine is marked Upload Y. Would this work to fix it? Go to QSO Multiple QSO perations Set Upload Date to blank. This assumed DX4Win will let me blank out all the dates. Then make a new submission which would have some duplicates that, hopefully, wouldn't confuse LOTW. Then when I wanted to upload QSOs to LOTW, the contest QSOs, as well as non-contest QSOs which had been entered directly into DX4WIN, would all be included in the upload. Now, when I do this, it appears that the contest QSOs do not in fact have the upload flag set to Y, so that they were not included in the upload. The QSOs which were entered directly into DX4WIN do have the flag set to Y however. I can work around this, but having the upload flag set to Y is certainly a convenient feature. [Dx4win] Need tips how to clean up garbled .csv file
I have a thread on the DX Chat reflector titled DXCC Application but have found out while processing the DX4Win log for DXCC submission that there is one area of about 120 qsos where the file is garbled. To start I used DX4Win to export in .csv all qsos (about 9,000) that are confirmed, then export them into Open Office Spreadsheet. The qsos in the file between number 280 and 398 have gotten out of sequence and are not in the proper columns, although the little section of 118 qsos seem to be nicely lined up in their own order! I notice that exporting from DX4Win to .csv produces a file with commas separating the fields but there are some embedded commas - especially in the comment fields. Can this mess up my file? Any tips for characters that you do not want in a file being exported? It _could_ be some strange memory problem but this dedicated ham Windows 98SE machine has given me no indications of problems. [Dx4win] Need some help with MMTTY - SOLVED
I previously reported trouble getting a Rigblaster Plus to key FSK using the MMTTY engine in DX4Win 7. It turns out you cannot use both CW keying and FSK rtty keying with a Rigblaster Plus because Windows does not allow separate programs such as DX4Win and MMTTY to use the same serial port. This is why Rigblaster Pro has 2 serial ports. The easiest solution was to build a separate two transistor interface right into a DB-9 hood with a pigtail connected to the rear Yaesu rtty port. Both FSK and PTT can be done at the rear port. The interface took _me_ over a day to gather parts, design, build and debug but should take _you_ no more than a couple hours. Below are my design notes. Hope this information helps someone else. Larry Alkoff N2LA - rttyrat.nfo 6/28/05 The rttyrat is a simple two NPN transistor interface built into a DB-9 hood used to key rtty PTT and FSK through the Yaesu rtty jack. This device is connected to a _different_ serial port than a Rigblaster type connection to allow rtty to be separately from the normal Rigblaster PTT and CW keying. This gets around the Windows problem that two programs (such as DX4Win and MMTTY) cannot use the same serial port). FSK is preferable to audio keyed rtty because there is no need to fiddle with the audio levels to prevent overdriving which causes QRM. The Yaesu rtty mode through the rear rtty jack allows the use of the Yaesu narrow filters My setup uses com1 for a Rigblaster Plus and com2 for the rttyrat. [Dx4win] MMTTY finally working with DX4Win
There has been a lot of discussion about the use of MMTTY with DX4Win After reading the discussions and thinking about it I've found an easy way to do it. My rig is a Yaesu Mark V with Rigblaster. The discussions focused on two methods: Either using a second computer and sending RS232 to the Packet port on DX4Win with a null modem or using Windows XP and some special software. The first is cumbersome and for the second - I stay far away from XP and use Windows 98SE when I have to use Windows at all. What I did was plug in a new USB to RS-232 converter to give a new port and make an interface with 1 transistor and a resistor that plugs into the PTT connector on my Rigblaster with a Y-connector. It could alternatively simply plug into any place on the PTT line. The interface is described in the MMTTY help file - it all fits in a 9 pin RS-232 plastic hood that plugs into the USB converter and out to an RCA plug. With this method either DX4Win or MMTTY can key the PTT line without interference because they are on totally separate ports. My new setup is: CW send:com1DTR This is a standard serial port TNC:com29600 baud Another standard serial port Yaesu rig control: com3USB adaptor RTTY PTTcom4USB adaptor using RTS The only thing that seems to be lacking is my log will show a USB contact which I have to manually change to RTTY after I enter the qso. It _may_ be possible to operate RTTY in Yaesu RTTY mode but for tonight RTTY is possible without using my KAM did not tune in sigs very well or easily. A better solution would be to get an interface for MMTTY soon in DX4Win like Writelog does but for now I'm all set. [Dx4win] Multiple Manager Question for TX9
I worked out a kudgey solution to the TX9 multiple manager problem. All TX9 cw contacts have been renamed to TX9/CW and qsl mgr set as DL4XS. All ssb and rtty contacts remain the same TX9 with qsl mgr set as DL5NAM. At least this way I can print out qsls and have them go the the right manager. [Dx4win] Multiple Manager Question
Hi Paul. I thought about cc to you on my email but didn't want to bother you. The problem with labels is that I tend to have a lot of qsos with the print flag set and batch print them. The print jobs are done approximately monthly for the direct and 3-4 times per year for buro. My understanding is that all qsos with the print flag set will print in the selected method. I can't just clear the print labels because there is no way to bring them back. The only way around this that I have found is to set the method on each label in the desired label selection to something unique like other or $$$, print the labels and then set the method back on each label. That's pretty cumbersome. As you have mentioned, I make use of filters for this process. Since an F8 selection is used so much in DX4Win I always thought it would be nice if label printing also followed F8 selection. Possibly F8 to select, then all qsos in the selection with the label flag set would print. Or possibly F8, select the qsos and also select Label=Y. Something like that would make the process a lot easier. My thought was that since the logic for F8 selection already exists it would be relatively easy to apply that selection to label printing. Of course, I don't know the code so it might be a lot harder to implement than relatively easy g. Larry N2LA On Tue, 19 Oct 2004 20:19:51 -0400, Paul van der Eijk wrote: Larry, There are many different ways to set the print label flag using filters etc. Why don't you use that flag to decide what labels you want to print? -- Paul At 01:32 PM 10/19/2004, Larry Alkoff wrote: On Tue, 19 Oct 2004 00:05:22 -0700, Garry Shapiro wrote: -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 3:48 PM To: Nelson Moyer; DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Multiple Manager Question --- Nelson Moyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: TX9 has two managers, DL4XS for CW and DL5NAM for SSB and RTTY. NI6T This is yet another reason why we need to be able to filter the qsls we want to print. Why should printing labels _not_ respond to filtering just like most other operations? It would be easy to select all Label=Y and Notes=manager we want and the label print routine should _only_ print those selected labels. The present system of selecting a special qsl method when we want to print a subset of qsls is very cumbersome - first to change the method and then to change it back. [Dx4win] QSL manager import from 6.02 shows many errors
I just tried the experiment of changing the date format, then creating a new qsl manager file in 603. Also tried closing dx4win and restarting before creating yet another qsl manager file. In all cases the qsl manager file retained the dd/mm format. So apparently changing the date format doesn't change the qsl manager data. Wonder why yours is different. The QSL manager date format matches the QSO date format in your preferences. Both 602 and 603 have mm/dd/yy set in Preferences but 602 has qsl.txt in mm/dd but 603 has it in dd/mm. Guess it's controlled somewhere else. Oh, I just realized what's going on. You must have your dx4win Preferences set for dd/mm. There were some errors with importing QSL manager data into 6.02, the dates were changed wildly into the future, i.e. year 2057 and the like. There is no consistency to the error, so it's hard to fix them. There are no funny year dates in the file when I grepped it for /20. I'd love to know what caused so many error messages unless these were needed mm/dd changes that dx4win would have done automatically. If you suspect it's just a month/day swap, then send me your .TXT file (the one you exported/want to import, ZIPped of course) and I'll fix it for you. Thanks. I've attached the 602 file which would be imported into 603. However it would be a lot easier for me if you just changed your Preferences temporarily to the stock dx4win mm/dd American style g and send me your updated file off list. Do you think if I change the date format the qsl manager information will automatically change? If so, I can handle the changes here which I'll have to do anyway when you come out with 9 final. Guess I'll experiment. 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. the QSL manager database that comes with 6.03 is much better, and Release 9 will be better still. We can hardly wait. Again my most grateful thanks. [Dx4win] QSL manager import from 6.02 shows many errors
My DX4Win 6.02 is stable and working but the time has come to upgrade to 6.03. How can I correct errors when importing my 6.02 qsl manager data into the new 6.03? I extracted an ascii list of qsl managers from the dx4win.cty in both 6.02 and 6.03 and started the import process using the 6.02 file. There is not _supposed_ to be a problem importing 6.02 qsl manager data into 6.03 but when I follow the procedure there are many errors. Report from the qsl manager import screen ( I haven't saved anything yet ) ADD 1304seems like an awful lot to add REPL 45 this is probably ones I have added that are not of the official lists. SKIP 21,495 this is good ERROR 1,577 not good at all BTW, it's a real PITA that I can't copy, paste or print the report window. Examining both files of qsl managers I find that many stations do not agree when I compare them using windiff. Windiff is an excellent visual compare program from the Windows cd. Apparently 6.02 reports qsl manager _dates_ as dd/mm/yy but 6.03 reports qsl manager dates in mm/dd/yy format so all such records show up as differences. Does anyone know if this is the reason for so many errors? I suspect not since 6.03 is supposed to be able to handle those. So where are all the errors coming from and how can I weed them out? Except for the date format differences I can't find any other differences in the first 100 or two examined. I'm afraid to finish the import because of them and have no idea of how dx4win handles this. Can anyone give me some insights into what is happening? Larry Alkoff N2LA Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX

[Dx4win] A cautionary tale aka backup or else
This is the tale of what happened to me. Don't be caught without a backup. Last month I started automatic backups of my dx4win log files to two other drives on other computers of my little home network. Prior to that I did backups once in a while. Not recommended! Last night the shack computer (n2la) crashed. The drive. Except for the dx4win data there was no data on the shack computer that is unique. Normal work is done on another computer (wanda). Luckily my dx4win data is intact on the other drives from the automatic backups. I can buy another drive, install Windows and dx4win, then reload my dx4win data. Don't lose your vital log data! Back it up. There are several ways to do it. I strongly suggest that the method be automatic - it would be awful to lose your data because you forgot to back it up for a few months! My method is to run a batch file in the wee hours every day using Windows 98 Task Scheduler. It's a little icon on the bottom task bar in the group of running programs to the left of the time display. Task Scheduler can be set to run any program (batch file in my case) at any time with any frequency (daily, weekly etc). The command would be something like: command /c backlog.bat Tip: Make sure the properties of command.com are close program on exit. The backlog.bat batch file first zips up the files in the dx4win\save subdirectory that I have modified. All the others will come back on a new install. The batch file line that creates the zip file is: zip -u n2la n2la.dxl dx4win.cty dx4win.tcp dx4win.lab dx4win.ini dx4win.cfg where the first n2la is the file name n2la.zip and the other are files to include in the zip file. The -u specifies only those files that have changed are added to the zip file. The batch file continues with lines that rename it uniquely and then copies it over the network with a command like: copy n2la.zip \\wanda\c\hamdata\ where wanda is my normal working computer and hamdata is where you wish to keep the backups. Hope this helps someone save their data. 73, Larry Alkoff N2LA Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX
[DX4WIN] Backup Of Logbook to Floppy
I backup my log _files_ frequently to several hard disks on my home network using a simple dos batch file. It's just a matter of typing backn2la. We have a shack computer, my office computers (Windows 98 and Linux) and wife's office computer. They all have to fail before I lose the data. I say _files_ because it is necessary to backup n2la.dxl, dx4win.tcp and dx4win.cty. They all are zipped into n2la.zip in the save directory of DX4Win on the shack computer with zip -u. Then the zip files are saved to several networked computers (including the shack computer) in /data/ham.dat as n2laDOY?.zip where DOY is the Day Of the Year and ? is a single letter from a to n. The backup file names for any given DOY start with a and continue to n such that, if n2la309a.zip exists then the next is named n2la309b.zip etc. The batch file runs under 4DOS, a command.com replacement which has the DOY function but it should be easy to do something under command.com. Of course, if you do much batch work I strongly suggest 4DOS which has many extensions to make like under dos better. Use 4NT for the CLI of Windows NT - actually it runs in 32 bits under _any_ Windows 95+ OS. At present 1.4 megabytes of data take under 400k of disk space - it's cheap you know. The next thing I'm going to do is make it run once daily automatically but I don't know how to do this under Windows 98 yet. There is no cron.daily you know ;-) Since attachments are not permitted on this list, I have included the batch file for your inspection: === batch file backn2la.bat === @echo off rem Copy n2la log data from n2la computer to wanda pushd c:\pf\ham\dx4win\save echo Updating n2la.zip file: zip -u n2la n2la.dxl dx4win.cty dx4win.tcp copy /u \\n2la\c\pf\ham\dx4win\save\n2la.dxl \\wanda\c\pf\ham\dx4win\save\ copy /u \\n2la\c\pf\ham\dx4win\save\dx4win.cty \\wanda\c\pf\ham\dx4win\save\ copy /u \\n2la\c\pf\ham\dx4win\save\dx4win.tcp \\wanda\c\pf\ham\dx4win\save\ rem Change to dx4win\save\backup if not isdir \pf\ham\dx4win\save\backup md backup cd backup set numb=a if exist n2la%_doy%a.zip set numb=b if exist n2la%_doy%b.zip set numb=c if exist n2la%_doy%c.zip set numb=d if exist n2la%_doy%d.zip set numb=e if exist n2la%_doy%e.zip set numb=e if exist n2la%_doy%f.zip set numb=g if exist n2la%_doy%g.zip set numb=h if exist n2la%_doy%h.zip set numb=i if exist n2la%_doy%i.zip set numb=j if exist n2la%_doy%j.zip set numb=k rem skip number l if exist n2la%_doy%k.zip set numb=m if exist n2la%_doy%m.zip set numb=n echo Updating log data to n2la and wanda: copy /u ..\n2la.zip \\wanda\c\inv\ham.dat\dxlog\n2la%_doy%%numb.zip copy /u ..\n2la.zip \\wanda\d\inv\ham.dat\dxlog\n2la%_doy%%numb.zip copy /u ..\n2la.zip \\doug\c\inv\ham.dat\dxlog\n2la%_doy%%numb.zip copy /u ..\n2la.zip c:\inv\ham.dat\dxlog\n2la%_doy%%numb.zip :end popd = end batch file = Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX
[Dx4win] Support for LOTW

Add a function to the logbook import mechanism to use the QSOs to set the confirm flag in the existing log. The imported QSOs will not be added to the existing log, they are only used to change the confirmation flag. Yes. 3. Some small changes are needed in the ADIF export (mode=PSK31 and one band needs a different format. (These changes have been made already) 4. I have no immediate plans to integrate LOTW functionality INSIDE DX4WIN (Key management, sending / receiving logs etc.) Many of you have already exported a log to ADIF and used that log to upload QSOs. The LOTW software makes the required steps simple. As long as we can export and import and set the LOTW confirm flag by hand where necessary I don't see any need for additional support. Confirmation flags: Currently, we only have Yes / No, and the Yes flag implies that you have the QSL card in your possession. With services like the LOTW, we will need an extra status to indicate an electronic confirmation. Some issues / questions: I assume 'Card in hand' and 'electronic confirmation' need to co-exist, ie all four combinations are possible. I'm not sure if we need more than one electronic confirmation flag (to distinguish between LOTW and eQSL for example) Does this really add value or does it add confusion? To distinguish between LOTW and eQSL for example leads to eight combinations. I can also see that other 'awards issuing organizations' may establish their own electronic logbook services. Do we need to distinguish what type of confirmation (card or electronic) can be used for an award? It's going to be a real can of worms. [Dx4win] How to xmit PSK off frequency
To reply to the messages from David, Rob and Mel as to wether you can't just use the split capabilities of the transceiver: When you receive a PSK station with the rig set at 14070 (the standard starting point for the PSK window) and click with the mouse on a DX signal, the rig is then transmitting on the indicated 14070 plus some offset frequency. The offset frequency _may_ be the frequency indicated in the Tx freq window but I'm not sure. How can I determine what the correct frequency to set the transceiver which would possibly be 14070 plus the offset frequency to receive the DX plus the split requested by the DX? I can't figure that out and need someone who does this for a living to explain it. 73, Larry Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX
[Dx4win] How to xmit PSK off frequency
Thank you very much Mel. I understand it now - it's quite simple! Thanks for your mini-tutorial of the 14070 ssb range 14070-14073 and the meaning of the audio tone frequency. It's quite clear now. I'm not sure the XIT in a Yaesu Mark V is calibrated in frequency units. So I'll just keep the Rx and Tx netted and set the transceiver xmit freq higher by the DX stations requested offset. 73, Larry N2LA On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 13:14:32 -0400, Mel Martin wrote: I just don't see what your problem is Larry... maybe I'm missing something... When you check the net box, the receive and transmit tones are identical... If the audio tone is 1000HZ for example... you are transceiving on the 14.070 SSB channel... ie 14.070 - 14.073... the actual PSK signal is 14.071 14,070 KHz + 1 KHz... If you are netted to the signal at 1000Hz... and the station asks you to transmit, for example, 1KHz up... just set the XIT up 1KHz... or set the RIT down 1KHz and retune... where you are exactly is not really relevent... what you care about is being where the DX station sends you... the waterfall will think you are still netted because of the offset of the carrier frequencies... which is the XIT/RIT offset... maybe that is what has you confused. It's no different than any other mode. Remember the waterfall is just looking at the audio passband and is assuming that RX/TX carrier frequencies are the same. - Original Message - From: Larry Alkoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: dx4win dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 12:41 Subject: Re: [Dx4win] How to xmit PSK off frequency To reply to the messages from David, Rob and Mel as to wether you can't just use the split capabilities of the transceiver: When you receive a PSK station with the rig set at 14070 (the standard starting point for the PSK window) and click with the mouse on a DX signal, the rig is then transmitting on the indicated 14070 plus some offset frequency. [Dx4win] Suggestion for ease of use improvement
The backup files dx4win.ctb and dx4win.dxb are deleted when dx4win exits normally. My request is that these files should _also_ close when alt-s is typed since after alt-s the log and cty files are up to date. This will eliminate the problem when dx4win closes unexpectedly and upon reloading asks if you want to save the backup files. Since I don't remember at that time if I alt-s'ed or not I have to look at both the current file and saved backup. They are useless at that time if alt-s saved the last modifications and deleting them at alt-s time would save a lot of time and energy. Vy 73, Larry N2LA Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX

[Dx4win] Duplicate identical spots bug
When I connect to a http cluster like 25 spots OH2AQ,http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/dx25.html?|3 I get duplicate spots every 3 minutes until the number of spots runs out of the 25 that this particular cluster displays. There are two separate problems: 1. If it's late at night when there are not many new spots I'll get pages of the same 1,2 or 3 spots. Also I have to listen to the _same_ voice spot announcement every 3 minutes. 2. If the same station is spotted two different times I get multiple instances of _both_ spots. The earlier spot is not dropped as normally happens with a two meter cluster. These two problems do not happen when using a two meter cluster because two meter clusters normally only send the spot once. In the case of a http cluster, there should be logic to: 1. Do not respond to or announce a spot that is identical to a previously listed spot 2. Clear a spot when a later different spot for a call comes in like a two meter cluster. I understand the ability to re-scan http spots is new in version 6 and I greatly applaud it's addition but the current logic is not correct. I hope it can be fixed. [Dx4win] How do voice announcements check hardware?
In my DX4Win 5.03 manual it talks about how DX4Win checks to see if sound is enabled on the computer and, because the software check sometimes gives erroneous results, there is a way to bypass this check. Specifically under the topic Voice | Audio/Voice it says: Audio / Voice If a sound card is present in your system, the program can announce DX spots using the sound card. If no sound card is present, a DX alert results in a system beep. In some cases the function to test for a sound system fails. In such a case you can test if the system can play a sound file correctly and bypass this test. In my new computer with sound on the motherboard, it seems to me I'm not getting all the voice announcements, although some do come through. Is the function to test for a sound done each time a voice announcement is made or just once when the program starts? How can this check be bypassed? [Dx4win] Abnormal termination logic questions.
The use of the file \dx4win\dx4win.dxb which is deleted when a normal termination takes place is quite useful to recover from crashes in cases where the log file has not yet been written to disk. However when a control-s is done and the program subsequently crashes with no changes to the log, the dx4win.dxb file really gets in the way. In DX4Win 5.03 the online help says that the file \dx4win\dx4win.dxb is used as a backup in case of abnormal termination and that dx4win.dxb will be made identical with the log file \dx4win\save\n2la.dxl (in my case) after a save or control-s. After experimentation, this does not happen and the two files are not conformed after control-s. My practice is to do frequent control-s so that in case of a crash the log file is up to date. However, since the two files are not the same I have to go through the cumbersome process of loading both files and trying to see which has more contacts. Is my program acting abnormally? If the dx4win.dxb and my log were the same size it would be easy to check with a simple batch file after a crash. Or is it possible that both the log and dx4win.dxb contain the same information in a slightly different format? Being binary I cannot easily peer into them. Here's a thought: Shouldn't a control-s delete or rename dx4win.dxb until the next entry or change is made since the log is as up to date as possible after a control-s? [Dx4win] Updating spots
The issue of losing telnet spot connections has been discussed in a recent thread. To have a reliable spot connection I use the oh2aq supplied in the stock dx4win.tcp: http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/dx25.html? When I use this exact same url in my web browser it updates every minute but DX4Win ignores the new data. The only way to update is manually by pressing a key. Is there any way DX4Win can take advantage of the automatic update facility of this site? If not I request this ability in the next DX4Win update 73, Larry Alkoff N2LA Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX

Ted I've been wondering why I have had problems and you don't. I'm also behind a router and the windows computer also has the ZoneAlarm firewall but that has not seemed to stop the DOS attacks. It's not a D-Link (Ugate 3000) but I've looked at the D-link and others and they are all pretty much the same. I'm experimenting with a new system that may eliminate the unwanted connections from various unknown urls. It's a Linux system with a very cool program called Win4Lin which allows you to actually _install_ Windows 98 so that it and windows programs are actually running under Linux - but they don't really know it. The best thing is that Windows then uses the networking facilities of Linux including a special stateful firewall that only allows connections to come in from the Internet if related to something I have initiated. This may stop all the DOS type interference because they are all initiated from the outside and should not be permitted through the firewall. It's running now and I should know in a day or so. My goal is to end up with a Telnet connection for spots that runs for weeks at a time! 73, Larry N2LA On Tue, 05 Nov 2002 09:46:03 -0500, Ted Sarah - W8TTS wrote: I use DX-Telnet through a cable modem (Road Runner) and don't have any problem staying connected. [Dx4win] Do these prefixes need changing?
I recently went over the official ARRL DXCC countries list and compared it to the list you get with F1 in the countries field of DX4WIn. Here are some changes I would like to make. 1. Antarctica is listed as CE9 in the DXCC list, KC4 in DX4Win. The only reason to change that is to maintain the same alphabetical order as ARRL. 2. Franz Josef Land is listed as R1FJ in the DXCC list, 4K2 in DX4Win. I only have 2 qso's - R1FJV and UA3PAC/P Since 4K2 doesn't appear to be used shouldn't it be changed? 3. Malyj Vysotskij Is is listed as R1MV in the DXCC list, 4J1 in DX4Win. Again I have 9 qso's with R1MVI recently and would like to change this on the basis that it's in actual use. 4. Ukraine is listed as UR in the DXCC list, EM in DX4Win. This one is very confusing - I don't know where EM came from. My Ukraine qso's mostly start with UR. It's easier to associate UR with Ukraine than EM. EM is frequently used as a prefix for Antarctic stations! All the rest are close enough and keep to the same alphabetical order as the official ARRL countries list. I would change these in my personal countries database. Does this make good sense or am I tweaking needlessly? Your comments please. 73, Larry Alkoff N2LA Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX

Dave NR1DX [EMAIL PROTECTED] FWIW I have the same timeout problem as the others and it is definitly _not_ rf related because it only happens at a computer in my house which is 200 yards from the shack. The shack is not operational at that time, therefore no rf. The shack uses a two meter line which is rock solid. This would dismiss rf as the culprit for most timeout problems. [Dx4win] Does dx4win.cty automatically update?
I have worked K1B from my shack computer and changed the country to KH1. All of my contacts there are being properly reported as Baker-Howland. I routinely export from the shack computer as ADIF and import that file into my house computer which is 200 yards away. The house computer is where I log in QSL's, print lables and make reports. My preferences under imports is set to accept imported values. The contacts import properly as KH1 Baker-Howland. My question is - has the house dx4win.cty been properly updated for the K1B exception with this procedure? In a related case about 1000 QSO's from way back were imported into DX4Win. Originally there were errors reported and I went through the log and changed each country and zone to it's proper value. I assume that updated the dx4win.cty file but later I refreshed DX4Win and by mistake installed the current 5.03 dx4win.cty file. However the imported QSO's did not change - however about 75 contacts were marked error in the notes field. My related question is - did the virgin dx4win.cty file somehow automagically get modified to reflect the changes in the related case? Based on the above behavior it seems to me that dx4win.cty always changes to reflect the country and zone information in an existing or imported file. Why then is there a merge facility and when is it necessary to do this? I have never done the merge thing and my log _seems_ to be accurate. 73, Larry Alkoff N2LA Larry Alkoff N2LA - Austin TX

I didn't think they would be so huge _yet_ but it's possible. The problem I was trying to address with my low key suggestion is how to know which updates have been made. And of course what do you do when a new DX4Win comes out? I wonder if it's possible for me to simply keep adding updates to my own file with comments embedded as to which updates are being added. Questions that arise are: Do later updates overwrite the old data? Is there any warning when this happens? I don't want to overwrite old correct data with possible incorrect new data. I wish it was possible to keep a log of this data. How reliable is Vlad's data? That is, which DX bulletins does he get data from and how reliable are they. I have noticed a lot of DX bulletins will have conflicting or just plain wrong QSL manager data. AFAIK there is no way to extract the DX station call and QSL manager call to a file - that makes it very hard to check what's going on. As a fairly new born-again DX'er after a 30 year absence I'm starting to appreciate how much time and energy goes into QSL'ing. It's a real waste of time when I send a QSL to the wrong person. Unless he's nice enough to email or return the card with an explanation a long time goes by before I realize something's wrong and start to take corrective action. Somehow I feel that a much improved QSL manager database is needed. 73, Larry All the postings to this group are archived at www.qth.net, why not just dig out the ones that you're missing and load them up that way? As an alternative, perhaps one of the folks who main support sites for DX4WIN could keep the updates available as single files for those who need them? From: Larry Alkoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Vlad I copied and pasted your QSL mgr update #5 and #6 into separate files and compared them. Most of the entries in the two files are quite different which indicates that the updates are _not_ cumulative. It looks like I have to download and install all of them one by one. I respectfully request that you send me updates 1 through 4 as I have 5 and 6. I'd also like to suggest that future updates each include all the previous updates so it would only be necessary to load the latest without worrying about missing an update.
