[Elecraft] K1 questions

2008-01-12 Thread Dave G4AON

Chris

You would only need to re-calibrate the "VFO" if you swap a board which
has the same band as the other one, ie I have a 80/40 two band board for
Winter use and a 40/30/20/15 one for summer, I have to re-set the 40m
calibration when changing the boards as the two 40m band crystals differ
in frequency slightly. You do have to tell the K1 which bands are on the
board, but that is easy and can be done "in the field".

Have you picked up the old tip of threading a rubber band through the
spacers to make swapping boards less of a juggling act? The rubber band
holds the spacers on the long bolts and still allows you to tighten
everything up.

You can add capacitance to a KAT1 to improve the low frequency tuning
ability, I've done that with mine. See:
http://www.astromag.co.uk/k2/g4aon_kat1_mods.pdf for details of an easy
and reversible modification.

I recently purchased a K1 for use at our vacation QTH, and gave it
its first workout today during NAQP. It's not a contest rig,
but it did just fine :-)

I've got a couple of questions:

- I have two band modules: 40/30/20/15 and 80/17. Do I need to do
any recalibration when I swap? How involved is this?

- I have a KAT1, and it worked fine until I tried to use my W3EDP
on 40m. It's not really a W3EDP because I feed it remotely with
coax and a BL2 balun. I have the 'output' menu item set to 5W. If I
use the 4:1 setting on the BL2, the KAt1 would get down to about
1.7:1, but the max output was 3.8W (according to the display).
If I use the 1:1 setting, it would only get down to 3.6:1 or so,
but was happy to send 5W out. Huh?

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2008-01-12 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
I was just about to write this note when there was a loud whoomp which shook
the house. I walked around the house in the dark to investigate. I had
expected to find another tree down but it was only the wood pile. We are going
through a thaw which has melted a lot of the fourteen inches of snow we had
yesterday. The freeze and thaw cycle must have found a weakness in my stacking
technique. However, it is still covered with plastic so I can start burning it
next month.
There is a contest underway so I will investigate that too. Looks like it
is the North American QSO Party. Should be over long before tomorrow's nets.
Conditions on 20 meters were good this week. Now that we are officially
starting our way back up the solar cycle the sun has shown some activity.
There may be aurora in a few days which should help feed the ionosphere. I
have listened to 40 meters a couple of times this week and found it good too.
Now to keep ahead of all the falling trees! I lost about ten more over the
last week to the heavy snow load. They were weakened by last year's wind storm
and all of the snow and rain we've had over the last month. Luckily they are
not close to the house. Two were very close to the pump house though. I'll
need to cut them up gingerly because they are laying across many feet of garden
hose.

Please join us tomorrow evening.

[Elecraft] Remote antenna tuners

2008-01-12 Thread Ken Kopp

I have an LDG AT-200 PRO that works well. Has LOTS of
memories and once initially tuned to a particular frequency,
acts really fast. Takes just a portion of a "dit" to tune when
moving from band-to-band.. It's in a weather-tight box at the
base of a 75' top-loaded, fully insulated tower with 120 radials.
I use it (only) for 160/80M.

LDG says it should work OK at -40 F. I told him I'd let him
know. (:-)) There are four LDG's in our small community.
All are different models, and we all like them.

A caution ... The 100W SGC is rated for -only- 40W on CW.
If you're considering an SGC look carefully at the ratings,
regardless of model. Their ratings are for SSB.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 Remote Operation

2008-01-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Henry,

The limiting factor is the AUXBUS signal which has been tested to a 6
foot length. If you can make it work reliably over a greater distance
than that, I am certain many folks would be happy to know how you did it.

MFJ, LDG, & SGC use different methods - they do not all provide 2
antennas and remember the settings for each antenna on all bands - i.e.,
they do it differently.

Re: [Elecraft] SW broadcast to calibrate against.

2008-01-12 Thread Tom Hammond

Thanks Geoff:

The higher the frequency of the signal you use as your 'standard' the more
accurate your REF CAL adjustment will be.

If you can use WWV / WWVH, try to use it, and at the HIGHEST frequency at
which you can hear it... 20MHz if possible, then 15 MHz, and lastly 10 MHz
if the higher frequencies cannot be received.

When performing K3 REF CAL, BEFORE going into CONFIG | REF CAL, find
WWV and then
adjust your SPOT tone (using MONITOR in CW mode) so the level of the
SPOT tone is
as close to the level of the WWV signal as possible. This will give
you the deepest

nulls when attempting to achieve a really close zero beat during REF CAL.

NOTE: Unless Wayne's recently fixed it, there is a bug in the
firmware which can
cause some odd actions if you attempt to change the SPOT tone PITCH
while you are
in REF CAL, so be sure to make any adjustments to the SPOT tone
outside of REF CAL.

The World Radio TV Handbook is one useful source of this kind of

Allouis, France ( 162 kHz - 2 Megawatts), I have found that the
frequency of most if not all the BC stations above 7100 kHz are at
the 5 kHz intervals as listed when the propagation is stable.
Although WWV at 10 MHz can be quite strong here, down to S4 at the
moment due to Aurora, 10 MHz is a busy frequency at times here with
WWVH, BPM and others sharing the frequency and IMHO is not the best
reference to use - putting aside any possible effects on "accuracy"
due to propagation over the long distance to the UK.

It's working OK. AM bandwidth includes both sidebands. Also, if you tune in
an AM station using AM mode and then switch to a SSB mode, you will note a
change in the fidelity (audio band response). There was much discussion on the
list a while ago on the subject. I'm looking toward the release of the fm
filter that should be in excess of 12 Khz, thus improving the fidelity. The
advantage of the 6 KHz filter in AM is primarily for transmitting, to maintain
a
legal bandwidth, and to eliminate the heterodynes to some degree.

I can second that item...
I bought one several years ago, I calibrated mine to less than 0.1 cps at

calibration to date.
There is a multi-turn pot on the PCB for fine tuning

Re: [Elecraft] SW broadcast to calibrate against.

2008-01-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Trevor,

I would tend to believe that the carrier frequency of a broadcast
station would be better accuracy than that 'fairly accurate' 10 MHz
secondary frequency standard.

That being said - use a secondary standard if that is your only choice
and if you trust it. Your K3 calibration will be as accurate as the
standard that you used to calibrate the reference with.
Keep in mind that the K3 reference is easily calibrated (just a turn of
the knob after entering the menu), so use whatever accurate source you
have available now and refine it as better standards become available to
you.

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 SN#207 built but question on AM Filter

2008-01-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

Lyle answered that earlier today. You are not doing anything wrong,
that is just the result of the bandwidth required by different
modulation techniques.

The bandwidth displayed is the *audio* bandwidth. An AM signal requires
*twice* the audio bandwidth in the IF, so your 6 kHz IF filter is
limiting the audio bandwidth to 3 kHz. SSB reception on the other hand
allows the audio bandwidth to be equal to the IF bandwidth, so until you
can fit the 15 kHz IF filter, you are limited to using the K3 in SSB
mode for AM stations that you wish to hear in Hi-Fidelity.

The 6 kHz filter is great for receiving amateur AM signals - which
should properly be restricted in bandwidth.

John,
as I already comment directly to you - what is important for me is to
know if this delay is also in VOX-off situation. I hope not, only want
to be sure. If VOX-on and semi-BK then I understand and expect such
delay, if VOX-on and full-BK (QSK) there will be also some delay
probably but related to QSK delay which is not important.
So can anybody confirm behaviour (presence of any delay) vhen VOX-off
and XMIT activated/deactivated?

Thanks and 73!

I do not see the need for using the CW delay time when manually
exiting xmit mode when I press the XMIT button. I would expect the
rig to return to receive mode as soon as the button is pressed. If
I set the CW delay to zero, the return is instantaneous. I admit
that I only rarely use the manual XMIT mode but I find it
 distracting when I do.

[Elecraft] KX1 LED Display Control...... Brightness and On-Time adjustments ??

2008-01-12 Thread KEN
Hello All,

Working on installing the 30/80 board in this newly assembled KX1 and just
realized I don't remember how to get the subject parameters adjusted.

Did it early on in the assembly process! Page 65 at the top says to tap Band
and RIT. Together, they just go thru the battery/s-meter options (display
mode). Tapping the individual Band and RIT buttons just performs other
functions.

I know I'm missing something or other.

THANKS !!

Re: [Elecraft] K3, Ham Radio Deluxe, DM780

2008-01-12 Thread Alan D. Wilcox

Simon,
Checked again ... off the network to get this sorted out. I don't have
any ports to open

if I'm just on the same PC as the K3.

K3 serial to PC running Win2K Pro. I invoke HRD and "Connect" to the K3,
get K3 display.

Click "Remote" and see that I've started the Remote Service (which does
seem to work remotely).

Click DM780 button, then for Radio, click "Configure" ... and get error
msg below.

(Interestingly, I see a waterfall, but the signal controls don't work.)

My guess - you haven't opened up a port...

Getting same error message whether I'm at the radio end or the remote

Start DM780, select to configure radio, use the defaults (localhost,

Sometimes I see an error msg saying to be sure the K3 is on (it is)
and "not in memory mode." (What's that?) Perhaps that plays into the
solution somehow?

I downloaded the new K3 utility this morning so I could upgrade the K3
firmware.

The MCU V1.58 loads OK but the DSP V1.48 won't load. The K3 VFO B area
tells

me "NEW K3UTIL SOFTWARE REQUIRED * * * *".

I have reloaded the K3 utility (V1.1.1.7) but the DSP still won't load. It
takes about 10 minutes for the attempt after which the K3 displays "E
000202" in VFO A and "ERR DSE" in VFO B. The manual tells me to reload the
DSP firmware which is what I have been trying to do.

I am using the Elecraft Serial/USB adapter cable.

I have also tried the "Cold Boot" method to no avail.

Is there any way to load older (working) versions of the firmware?

(by the way, you can now delete the 'Waiting for K3' from your
signature...).

We are unfortunate in Europe that after MSF stopped broadcasting time
standards on HF (apart from 60kHz) in not having a reliable standard to
check against. WWV (always recommended by Elecraft) is normally inaudible
here. The only available one is RWM on 9998kHz (also on 14996) and is what I
originally used to calibrate my K2 against. But I can't even hear that at
the moment...

For a rough check, most of the broadcast stations at 7MHz are fairly
accurate and on the 5kHz intervals. I just checked and the one on 7200 is
pretty spot on as far as I am concerned.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 : AM synchronous detection

2008-01-12 Thread Dave Martin
Roger, Ron.

I just hadn't seen any information that would indicate how wide the
DSP filters would go if one had a roofing filter wider than 6 KHz.
I've used only one sideband when there was interference on one side of
the other of an AM signal, but always used the 746Pro's synchronous AM
when possible. That's one thing it did well. So I'm hoping that the
firmware will develop to allow better than 3 KHz real AM if one has
the roof for it. And surely it will, the way the guys are going.
Better and better every week. By the time my K3 arrives there'll be
nothing left to whine about.

Subject: [Elecraft] New DSP Firmware won't Load

I downloaded the new K3 utility this morning so I could upgrade the K3
firmware.

The MCU V1.58 loads OK but the DSP V1.48 won't load. The K3 VFO B area tells

me "NEW K3UTIL SOFTWARE REQUIRED * * * *".

[Elecraft] SW broadcast to calibrate against.

2008-01-12 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I'd like to get a list of KNOWN frequencies of broadcast stations in 10 -
40m in the UK - it's been pointed out tpo me that using BBC WS at 648 KHz is
a not so good, because its a low freq.

I seem to be having problems find a broadcast that is reliable and from the
UK.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 : AM synchronous detection

2008-01-12 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hello Dave:

The errata with the list of features is the one you should have received
with the Owner's manual. The current one on the Elecraft web site is C1-1
dated Nov 18.

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K3%20owner's%20man%20errata%20C1-1.pdf

It sounds like you were looking at the errata sheet for the Kit assembly
manual.

I have a 6 kHz filter as well, and for best audio fidelity I use a SSB mode
to listen to broadcast AM. The excellent stability and high tuning accuracy
of the K3 means I just punch in the frequency I want and even music is
within one or two Hz of the right frequency - much too close for me to hear
any tone error.

As Lyle noted, the I.F. bandwidth of an AM signal is *twice* the audio
bandwidth since there are two sidebands that must fit through the 6 kHz
filter bandpass on an AM signal. I find that's FB on Ham AM signals, but
those commercial AM stations who make full use of their 5 kHz audio
bandwidth are cut off at about 3 kHz in AM mode. Gong to SSB mode with the 6
KHz filter allows the full audio bandwidth through.

Not yet available. You can use USB or LSB and FINE tuning for the

Thanks again. Yes, AM medium wave broadcast (even music) sounds good in

WIDTH refers to the fianl audio bandwidth. IF is 1:1 to the IF

You turn off the unused filters, don't forget to set the offset for the

I used my own GPS derived frequency standard to set my K3 (very easy as

would be fine, they are going to be within 1 or 2 Hz.

I just finished building my K3 and I'm now ready to start the Test and

I have 2 questions.

1) I have installed a 2k7 filter in FL3 and a 200Hz filter in FL5. The
other
slots are empty. I assume I have to set the filter width of the unused
slots

to 0 with 0 offset and assign FL3 to transmitting duties in the TX FL menu?

2) The Reference Oscillator Calibration section says to zerobeat a strong
local AM broadcast signal. What have the EU K3 builders used as a reference?

Thanks very much for taking the time to answer

Yes...it just takes more keystrokes, but there's another advantage for when
we get the KRX3. You might want to run on one frequency (using VFO A & RIT)
and listen on another (VFO B). If you assign RIT to VFO A and lock VFO A's
TX, then you can use VFO A to tune on your run frequency and use VFO B to
listen elsewhere. So you can use BOTH big knobs for tuning the RX and never
touch the dinky RIT knob.

[Elecraft] K3 : AM synchronous detection

I wonder if there is a list available of the K3 features that are NOT

Although I have a 6kHz filter installed, I am unable to enable
synchronous detection in AM mode. (Owner's Manual p I have the filter
in slot FL2 and have it activated as 6.00 in AM mode when fully
clockwise. The bandwidth control only goes up to 3kHz on AM, but goes
up to 6kHz on other modes. Is this normal or do I have something not
configured correctly? Perhaps the 3kHz refers to the width from the
centre carrier, hence giving a total bandwidth of 6kHz?

2008-01-12 Thread Ken Kopp

Bill,

Am I missing something here ?

I can set ... and LOCK ... a frequency in the main VFO A
knob / display and then move it to the VFO B knob / display
using the A/B button. Then, by activating the SPLIT function
I think I have what you're suggesting.

This is the way I always operate. The VFO B knob is too
easily bumped when poking at the SPOT and CWT buttons.
and the buttons to the right of the VFO A knob.

I've never used RIT on a radio ... reading the actual frequency
on the dial display saves the brain effort to figure out what the
"real' received frequency is. (:-))

Same here. Now if Elecraft would just assign the RIT knob to the Main
knob,
when both Lock and RIT are enabled, you could use the main knob to tune
your
RX while TX freq is locked. This would be really nice for running in
contests. Piexx did this in their TS-930S digital board upgrade many
years
ago and I've suggested it to Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K3 Calibration in EU

2008-01-12 Thread ON4WIX

Hi all,

I just finished building my K3 and I'm now ready to start the Test and
Calibration Phase (starting at page 57 in the assembly manual). At this time
I have 2 questions.

1) I have installed a 2k7 filter in FL3 and a 200Hz filter in FL5. The other
slots are empty. I assume I have to set the filter width of the unused slots
to 0 with 0 offset and assign FL3 to transmitting duties in the TX FL menu?

2) The Reference Oscillator Calibration section says to zerobeat a strong
local AM broadcast signal. What have the EU K3 builders used as a reference?

Thanks very much for taking the time to answer

Corcom 6EF1 is what you want. About $10 in single units (about half that on
eBay for 5 units). This problem has been around for over 10 years but the
manufacturers keep shipping junk.

[Elecraft] Evolution of the K3

2008-01-12 Thread G3SJJ
Great to hear all the news and views of people's K3s. It is interesting
look back to the first announcement, specs and figures being released,
field testers reactions and comments, and now users' comments. The theme
all along has been of handling and performance expectations exceeded.
Now that shipment of orders placed up to 9 May has been made I am
waiting excitedly to hear from Aptos of the impending shipment of my K3,
ordered on 14 May. This will also mark the end of the first production.
Another milestone in the evolution of the K3. I will be watching my
inbox carefully over the next few days as I now assume shipment of
orders placed 10 to 14 May will be made during next week. For those
interested in these things, for serial numbers 100 to 200, I note an
average of around 15 units a week being shipped, so production is really
starting to ramp up, and my original thoughts about 1st prodn run volume
seems to be tracking well.

Exciting times Chris G3SJJ

David,

In a poor HF location with just a trap dipole I'm seeing the whole world on
SSTV and PSK.

Try PSK - you will be amazed with what you can do. PSK requires brains, not

I'm still a phone guy, so until I've improved my Morse, with current
conditions, there's not a lot I get to work. There's plenty around, but
limited antenna and power (K3/100W barefoot), not a lot seems to hear me.

[Elecraft] K3 - superb

2008-01-12 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I'd just like to say how much I like my K3. Not only that, but prior to the
K3, I was using an FT-857 as a base station (ok, so we all learn and I've
only been licensed since 2003).

My activity had rather dropped off and not just due to current conditions.
The K3 has rekindled my interest and I'm happily trying to work people in
the evening again (XYL permitting).

[Elecraft] DON'T PANIC

2008-01-12 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I just did the f/w update (on a Mac), MCU went through ok, DSP reported back
to utility, version 1.47, when it had just uploaded 1.48.
I just 'Sent All New Firmware to K3' again and it was ok second time.

DM780 / HRD with SSTV support should be available in a few weeks.

I third the motion. And aside from the RF issues, they're really
really well-built power supplies. Lots of very clean output; not
over-rated like a lot of power supplies are. Good components
(electrical and mechanical) so they last a long time. The Silencer
series are impressively quiet. And good workmanship; last one I put
in a system, I took apart first (hey, it's a habit ;) and was pleased
with the cleanliness and precision of the assembly.

[Elecraft] [K3] delivery of 00201

2008-01-12 Thread PE8E
Greetings fellow elecrafters,

Some may now say "oh no, not another one", but others expressed they want
to keep track of the progress in delivery of the desired goodies.

Yesterday the brown stork made a delivery in the deep south (although
highest part) of the Netherlands. We all know, storks like high nesting
places. After having payed the ransom (sales-tax) of 597 USD, on top of
the 171 USD his boss allready demanded (shipping), the man in brown was
willing to part from the famous big brown box. A big yellow sticker said
COD, the
kidnappers were serious and didn't want the police involved. Now baby
00201 is rescued and ready to grow up.

Seriously now, for the statistics:
- order placed on may 3rd (confirmation on may 4th)
- fully loaded K3/100 kit (with 50% deposit)
- invoice number 47542
- "will be send soon"-notice on friday january 4th
- left Aptos on tuesday january 8th (UPS Express)
- via Cologne Germany (january 9th) to the Netherlands
- no retention by dutch customs
- first delivery attempt thursday january 10th (I wasn't home)
- succesfull delivery on friday january 11th

Back to the boxes.
