[Elecraft] K2 Input Voltage - We Live and Learn
For the last few weeks and with the APP discussion, I was concerned that the DISPLAY on my K2/100 was showing 10.44 volts in receive mode whereas the DVM on my power distribution panel was showing a good 13.1 volts. I was just about ready to tear this complex 12V power distribution system designed to commercial communications facility standards apart when I noticed that the LEFT side of the display was indicating 12.4! YupI was reading the divider and the current (0.44 A) as if it was 10.44 volts ! 55 years as a ham and 51 years as an electrical engineer notwithstanding We all live and learn. Many thanks Ian *** NOTE *** You must use the latest version of our firmware loader (K3 Utility rev 1.1.4.1) or else you won't be able to load all components of the upgrade. It's available on our K3 software page, along with release notes: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm As usual, if you have any difficulty with the firmware upgrade, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both Lyle, KK7P (DSP firmware) and myself (MCU firmware) will be closely monitoring your results in case further tweaking is required. I'd also like to thank all of our K3 customers for their patience. This firmware release was delayed several times due to testing, engineering staff vacations, etc. Our field testers have been pounding on interim releases for weeks (thanks, guys). I hope you'll find it worth the wait! 73, Wayne, N6KR * * * MCU 1.87 / DSP 1.69, 5-3-08 This release includes improvements in all areas. Changes are categorized below. NEW FEATURES: * CW KEYING IN SSB MODES: While in SSB modes, you can now send CW without changing modes or using an offset. The other station will hear the signal at your CW pitch. This is especially useful on VHF bands when SSB signals can’t be copied. To enable this feature, go into CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap ‘1’ until you see SSB +CW. * FM MODE ADDED: Requires FM filter installed in slot FL1. Those not needing FM mode can set CONFIG:FM MODE to OFF. To set up a repeater offset: Use the CONFIG:RPT OFS menu entry, then hold ALT to select -/+/simplex (-/+ appear under the FM mode icon). To set up tone encode: hold PITCH, then rotate VFO B to select PL TONE or PL OFF, and rotate VFO A to select the desired CTCSS tone. (When PL TONE is on, a letter ‘T’ will appear near the FM mode icon.) Repeater offsets and PL tones are stored per-band/per-memory. * VARIABLE AMP KEYING DELAY: Added CONFIG:TX DLY menu entry, which sets the time from KEY OUT jack (active low) to first RF in 1-ms steps, from 8 to 20 ms. To minimize loss of QSK speed, use the shortest delay that works with your amp. Most will work with the default (minimum) setting of 8 ms. * LINE OUT ALLOWS RX/TX AUDIO RECORDING: Normally, CONFIG:LIN OUT sets a fixed-level, receive-only output for main/sub (L/R), compatible with digital modes. Tapping '1' switches LIN OUT to =PHONES, where the line outputs match headphone audio, audio level controlled by AF/SUB gain controls, and both RX and TX audio available. * SIMULTANEOUS USE OF MIC AND LINE IN: If the MAIN:MIC+LIN menu entry is set to ON, and MIC SEL = FP or RP, the present mic OR line in can be used for transmit audio. NOTE: Setting MIC SEL to LINE overrides the MIC+LIN menu entry (its parameter becomes N-A). When MIC+LIN is in effect, rotating the MIC control shows MIC GAIN. The op has to set MIC SEL to LINE temporarily to set LINE IN gain. * S-METER ABSOLUTE MODE: Use the CONFIG:SMTR MD menu entry. Set to ABS (absolute) to have S-meter stay constant with preamp/atten settings. Default is NOR (where PRE/ATTN affect the S-meter). ABS mode requires recalibration (SMTR OF SMTR SC). RECEIVE: * SSB RECEIVE PASSBAND EXTENDED AT LOW END (now 100 Hz; was 200 Hz). * AM RECEIVE WIDTH RANGE INCREASED: The WIDTH control in AM mode now has a range of 2.8 to 10.0 kHz. Wider settings provide outstanding fidelity for hi-fi speech and other wide-band signals. This is the *IF* filter bandwidth -- the traditional way to show bandwidth for AM, because the required IF bandwidth is twice the modulation bandwidth. NORM selects an IF bandwidth of 6.0 kHz in this mode. WIDTH settings above 6.0 kHz will not be useful unless you have an FM-bandwidth crystal filter installed (at FL1). * IF A 2.8 KHZ FILTER IS INSTALLED, SSB NORM BW is 2.8 kHz (was fixed at 2.7 kHz). * AUTO-SPOT (SPOT with CWT ON) now works with both very weak and very strong signals. * PSK AUTOTUNE ACCURACY improved. You may still need to use RIT (FINE steps) to tune in signals for best built-in text decode. (Also see CW-to-DATA in the Owner’s Manual.) TRANSMIT: * TRANSVERTER POWER CONTROL: The value set in CONFIG:XVn PWR now correctly sets a fixed power level on the associated transverter band (0-1.50 mW or 0-12W). * POWER ROLLBACK BASED ON REFLECTED POWER: Power rollback begins at about 2.5:1 at 100 W (and of course

Does the advice for setting up soundcard digital modes given here: http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg53656.html become effective when using this new version? Specifically: If you try and trick the system and run with *zero* ALC bars in PSK31, the ALC has to work hard to give you your requested power - or maybe it will think there is insufficient signal to work with - and your Tx S/N may suffer. So, *please* set it to 4 bars in soundcard digital modes. This sounds right given the description of the ALC changes. Bob NW8L * SSB TX POWER CONTROL improved. Set ALC for about 5 bars (rarely 6+) using MIC gain control, then set CMP and POWER as desired. The RF power bargraph shows approx. peak power when you whistle or shout, but will typically show well below peak power during normal speech. If you're using an external peak-reading wattmeter or power amplifier, adjust POWER as required while observing the effect of speech peaks. If you find that an SSB power setting higher or lower than for CW is often required, you may wish to compensate for this using the CONFIG:TXG VCE menu entry. Technical Note: Our latest MCU and DSP code uses minimal amounts of ALC, consistent with analysis done by Leif Asbrink, SM5BSZ. (His findings and recommendations can be found on his web site, www.nitehawk.com/sm5bsz.) The general idea is to keep transmit drive just below where ALC can cause splatter on speech peaks, rather than apply ALC heavily to achieve additional compression. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I checked 20 meters again and only had 50 watts out at full power. There must be a connection to these two bands operation and construction of the radio. Hows that for basic theory, hi hi. I am somewhat discussed since I have put this radio up for sale. What I want to ask if recommendations for repair of my K2. Is there a place in Pa.? I will also check on the reviews of repair sites. [Elecraft] K3 Transverting
Hi all, Having done the upgrade this morning I thought I would test via my XV144 on FM. It would appear that the transverter is shutting down for some reason after a short over. I have to change bands back and forward again to switch the transverter back on. My initial thought is heat but touching the area of the transverter PA, it is pleasantly warm but certainly not hot. I have tried altering the XVn PWR setting to L0.5mW but the same thing happens. It would also appear that I cannot vary the power output using the PWR control on the K3. The menu info in the manual says I can but not how to do it. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Perfect K3 Speaker
Wayne, I'm curious about what seems to be an emphasis on non-powered speakers in your reply... why? My op bench was getting overrun with speakers for various rigs. I picked up an 8 channel stereo line level mixer and now run everything through a single set of powered PC speakers. The mixer (Behringer RX-1602) automatically mixes mono inputs as L+R and has a separate level adjustable stereo headphone output. Each input can be individually switched on/off. I did have to make a handful of isolation transformers to get rid of some ground loops but the mixer powered speakers tolerate legal limit RF levels well. 73, Bill N2BC (checking every email now, waiting for my Katie-gram on a December K3 order!) - Original Message - From: wayne burdick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Bruce Osterberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2008 11:43 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Re: Perfect K3 Speaker Hi Bruce, For communications bandwidths, a sturdy 4-ohm, 3 or 4 diameter mobile speaker (non-powered) does a great job. Right now I'm using Best Buy's Insignia, 4-inch, 3-way surround speakers, which sound quite good, although they're 8 ohms rather than 4 so the available per-channel peak power will be lower. [Elecraft] K3: SSB output power
OK, I was waiting to see if the firmware sorted this but it has not. If I hold tune or use a key, I get full output power on my external meter. On SSB I get about 40-50W showing on peaks for a setting of 120W. This is the same whether into my trusty old Sommercamp YP-150Z or via the Bird into a Termaline. It is also exactly the same into a tuned dipole. This is also with the TXG VCE set to +3dB! If I connect the 101Z or another radio into these meters, no problemo. So can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I use a Goldline in the front connector and currently it is on front panel high with a mic gain of 10 and compression of 15. That kicks up the ALC just fine. The K3 is #455 with the stock 2.7kHz filter with FRQ set to -0.91 as per the label on the filter and no gain. [Elecraft] re: Perfect K3 Speaker
Bruce, I am using and happy with a pair of Radio Shack Optimus XTS25 bookshelf speakers; I think this model is discontinued. I would think most bookshelf speakers would be good. My particular model is 8 ohms designed for 10 watts rms up to 20 watts max and I have room filling sound if I choose, it has a single 4-inch speaker and stands 6 1/2 inches tall. I normally run the AF gain at the 9 o-clock position. There are a lot of speakers out there that are specified for 100 watts or more. I haven't tried one but I would be worried about sufficient audio level being driven by the low wattage K3. Most PC speakers are low wattage. eham has a section reviewing speakers for communication use. http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/29 Mike Scott - AE6WA Tarzana, CA (DM04 / near LA) K3-100 #508/ KX1 #1311 --- Date: Sat, 3 May 2008 21:05:52 -0500 From: Bruce Osterberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Elecraft] Perfect K3 Speaker To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Good Evening: If I was to add an external speaker to the K3 what would it be, looking for suggestions as Dayton is just around the corner. 73 Bruce N9BX K3 # 775 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3: K3 Utility v. 1.1.4.1 Question
The K3 Utility Help describes this on the Firmware tab: Always load DSP data tables (Advanced Mode only, intended for firmware developers) DSP1 and DSP2 firmware consists of program instructions and some large data tables. Each DSP firmware revision will change the program instructions, but the DSP data tables are expected to change less frequently. DSP data tables are normally sent to the K3 only when a new DSP data table version becomes available. This reduces the DSP firmware load time. The Always load data tables check box causes the DSP data table to be loaded whenever the DSP is loaded, without regard to the currently installed DSP data table version. Users that aren't DSP firmware developers probably never need to select this checkbox, but if you do, it will just take more time to load the DSP when you select the Load checkbox on the DSP1 or DSP2 row. Nothing bad will happen if you check the check box. Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Joel R. RE: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)
You shouldn't directly edit the saved configuration file. However you may save one configuration, then manipulate the K3's CONFIG menu to a second set of settings and save THAT configuration. You may then restore either configuration. CW and frequency memories are NOT part of the saved configuration. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Perfect K3 Speaker
My pick is the RadioShack Optimus 8 or 11. I believe these are long out of production but widely available used on the Internet. I also second N4LQ's recommendation on the MFJ ClearTone for CW. I think the audio fullness of the existing K3 speaker could be substantially improved with the simple addition of a baffle. A few weeks ago, I looked at this and there appears to be just enough room to form a sealed square box around the speaker to form an infinite baffle. The problem with 99% of the existing communications speakers is that the path from the back-wave of the speaker is far too short and results in low-frequency cancellation. The baffle prevents back-wave and forward-wave cancellation. The result is substantially improved low-end content below 400 Hz. For a bit more fidelity and to take advantage of the K3's stereo speaker outputs, I use a pair of good quality bookshelf-style speakers (again, non-powered). Right now I'm using Best Buy's Insignia, 4-inch, 3-way surround speakers, which sound quite good, although they're 8 ohms rather than 4 so the available per-channel peak power will be lower. They're about 4W x 8H. I had been using just a single speaker, but having two allows me to get L/R separation of the main and subreceivers, as well as take advantage of the K3's AFX simulated stereo mode. 73, Wayne N6KR On May 3, 2008, at 7:05 PM, Bruce Osterberg wrote: Good Evening: If I was to add an external speaker to the K3 what would it be, looking for suggestions as Dayton is just around the corner. 73 Bruce N9BX K3 # 775 --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. So, *please* set it to 4 bars in soundcard digital modes. This sounds right given the description of the ALC changes. Bob NW8L I am observing that it is impossible to get the requested power output in DATA A. If I set the PWR control of the K3/10 to 5W then no amount of audio input will get the external power meter to read 5W output on a pure audio tone. Instead the meter reads about 2.5W at the same LINE IN setting that gave 5W out when the power was increased to max. Slowly increasing the audio drive above this level with the K3 meter showing ALC shows the ALC pulsing about twice a second. The amount of ALC shown during the pulses increases as the drive level increases. The power meter (moving coil, average reading) will only go up to about 3.0W and some slight pulsing of the meter needle is also evident corresponding to the K3 ALC display. Sending a PSK idle tone instead of a pure tuning tone the meter shows a level a bit below half the level on the tuning tone, commensurate with the K3 limiting the output to 2.5 or 3W PEP despite 5W being requested. The only way to get a real 5W peak is to set the PWR control to 12W and then regulate the power entirely using the audio drive, which is not a very accurate or foolproof way of doing it. In PSK D mode where the audio is generated internally by the K2 the power does seem to be correctly regulated by the power control (the K3 does not generate the short tail of pure carrier at the end of the transmission like most sound card programs do.) However something is definitely not right with the power level setting. If I transmit in DATA A, then select PSK D and send something, I only get about 0.2W! I have to change mode to CW and then back to SSB and then the power out in PSK D is correct. Unlike someone else who reported low output on SSB my own aaallo testing has found nothing amiss in this mode. - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-FIRMWARE-UPDATE%3A---MCU-1.87%2C-DSP-1.69---%28Finally%21%29-tp17041394p17045737.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)
Good day all, I just uploaded the new firmware version which went smoothly. After that I had to do some filter settings as I had my FM filter (yes, it is in slot 1) already installed but it had to be enabled since the FM mode is available now. Normal procedure: go to Config, select a filter and tap the modes to set or disable that particular filter. If you are for instance editing FL3 and tap FM mode, it switches back to FL1. Be aware of that! I messed up the filter settings. It would have been better not to be able to select FM mode when in FL2-FL5 as the FM filter has to be in FL1 position, isn't it? Now the Q: Can someone tell if and why listing in CW mode with roofing filter 2.7 Kc and DSP set to 2.8 and centered sounds so different as when on SSB mode with the 2,7 Kc roofing filter and the DSP at 2.8 Kc and centered? In this particular situation (in CW mode) it is impossible to read an SSB or LSB signal as if filters are totally different. [Elecraft] K2 6442 - Chasing zero on alignment.
I have been working through the alignment prior to final assembly on my K2. Up through the receiver pre-alignment things seem ok. However, I seem to have some problems on the TX alignment on page 80. To do this process I am using the integrated meter and the Elecraft Dummy Load. In addition, I do not have sufficient understanding to reason out things that do not seem to work as expected. I have done the procedure several times and it seems that I have to make bigger than expected changes each time. Here is what has happened: 1. Larger than expected changes; 2. BAND +/- skips band and have to manually tune to frequency or remains on same freq; 3. When aligning 17m adjusting c32/4 does not change power indication. Indication will flicker up or down by .1 watt. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Is there a way to get everything back to a default starting place and start over with the whole part III process? I am really hoping to get this resolved so I can do the final assembly and install all the accessories. I do not want to do that until I am relatively confident that the alignment is ok. [Elecraft] K3 firmware 1.87 update
Initial reactions - 1) After solving the run home to momma loader message the firmware loaded easily. (OT - In the movie Hunt for Red October a sonar analysis program plays a role. It interprets sounds as humping whales if it cannot assign another source. The savvy operator says the program runs home to momma when it's stumped.) A destination directory for the firmware files didn't exist, so the loader gave me the missing files message. 2) Transmit audio processing seems smoother. A dynamic mic is used so the wire added per the alert from Eric shouldn't matter. (s/n 699) I still don't sound like Sean Connery... 3) Love the wider AM bandwidth. Will try FM next. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2 6442 - Chasing zero on alignment.
Chris, What exactly do you mean by #2. If BAND+/- is 'skipping' a band, then that is an indication that you may have tuned WITH THE VFO to the next band. The K2 will *not* change bands when you turn the VFO (even though the display may have the correct frequency indicated). If you have created that condition by tuning from one band to the other with the VFO, then the way to get things back to normal is to do a Direct Frequency Entry for each band in question (or just do it for all bands to be certain they are all correct). Such a situation *could* explain you bandpass filter tuning problems on 80 meters and 17 meters too. 73, Don W3FPR MTcja wrote: 1. Larger than expected changes; 2. In this particular situation (in CW mode) it is impossible to read an SSB or LSB signal as if filters are totally different. Hi Evert, In CW mode, wider crystal filters are positioned such that they provide a rapid cutoff about about 1 kHz lower on the high end (roughly 1.9 kHz, vs. 2.9 kHz for SSB modes). This seemed like the best choice for QRM reduction in CW modes. You can SHIFT the passband up a bit to improve copy of SSB stations in CW mode, if required. However, with the latest firmware you can now send CW directly in SSB modes, which is a much more convenient way of making cross-mode QSOs. (Tap '1' in the CONFIG:CW WGHT menu entry to enable this feature; set it for SSB +CW.) I've got the feeling that this was not the case with the earlier version or am I wrong? As far as I know this positioning of the crystal filters in CW mode has not changed. At least the display still says FL2. Are the slopes of the DSP so much steeper? If you don't have a filter wider than 2.7 or 2.8 kHz enabled, the WIDTH control will still allow you to set WIDTH beyond this (all the way to 4.0 kHz), but this may not be very effective since the crystal filter has steep skirts. The 13 kHz filter will work in SSB modes if you have it enabled. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Werner, Have you tried doing power calibration on all bands as described in the manual? You need to do TUNE on each band, into a dummy load, at both 5 W and 50 W. This should get you reasonably close at 100 W. However, for best initial power-setting accuracy in SSB modes and in DATA A and AFSK A, I'd recommend doing a quick TUNE. This is more accurate than setting the POWER control, which at present uses a lookup table to determine the approximate drive value required. You can also use a non-zero value of CONFIG:TXG VCE to adjust the nominal drive level in voice modes vs. CW mode. RE: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)
MCU 1.87 / DSP 1.69, 5-3-08 * AM RECEIVE WIDTH RANGE INCREASED: The WIDTH control in AM mode now has a range of 2.8 to 10.0 kHz. WIDTH settings above 6.0 kHz will not be useful unless you have an FM- bandwidth crystal filter installed (at FL1). Audio response is limited to 4.2 KHz with either the FM filter (13 KHz) or AM filter (6 KHz) at FL1. With the AM filter, 4.2 KHz is wider than necessary. With the FM filter, the 4.2 KHz high cut is less than the 10 KHZ of IF bandwidth. Why is the IF bandwidth and audio response excessively restricted with the FM filter? It should be possible to achieve at least 12 KHz of IF bandwidth and 6 KHz or more of audio bandwidth depending on the filter skirts. * IF A 2.8 KHZ FILTER IS INSTALLED, SSB NORM BW is 2.8 kHz (was fixed at 2.7 kHz). Can this be extended to CW and Data? It appears that NORM is currently fixed at 400 Hz regardless of mode and filter. 500 Hz would be more appropriate for CW with the 500 Hz crystal filter and even wider values might be appropriate for some DATA A modes with a 1000 Hz or 1.8 KHz filter. * AUTO-SPOT (SPOT with CWT ON) now works with both very weak and very strong signals. Auto-spot consistently tunes to a tone 50 Hz low (50 Hz below the value set for pitch). * SSB TRANSMIT BANDPASS EXTENDED AT LOW END. Improvement is about 2 dB at 300 Hz, 3 dB at 200 Hz, and 6 dB at 100 Hz. Can this be made optional? Excess LF response only wastes power at low frequencies and occupies excess bandwidth. Additional improvement possible via TX EQ. Will TX EQ be made mode and/or input dependent? Setting TX EQ for voice screws up the audio response for digital mode (AFSK A and DATA A) operation. The same is true for RX EQ. 73, ... Joe, W4TV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re: Antenna Name
Mike, I fixed this so that, if the antenna name is all blank -, it will not show up at all. As long as you don't assign a name, it'll stay that way. For those like me who sometimes need reminding of which antenna is selected, the feature still exists. Hold ANT, then use VFO A and B to give it a name. 73, Wayne N6KR On May 4, 2008, at 11:27 AM, Mike Harris wrote: G'day, I've just noticed that with the latest firmware installed the previously enabled antenna name feature (HOLD ANT) has been cancelled. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)
Added to the list -- thanks. * AUTO-SPOT (SPOT with CWT ON) now works with both very weak and very strong signals. Auto-spot consistently tunes to a tone 50 Hz low (50 Hz below the value set for pitch). I can't duplicate this. I tried various sidetone pitches and found that auto-spot got to within a few Hz every time. What sidetone pitch are you using? I suppose some kind of band noise could interfere with the operation of CWT as well. We could add a menu entry for this -- it's on the list. Meanwhile, the low end is rolled off a bit in hardware, too, so in practice I don't think you'll have any problems with this. Additional improvement possible via TX EQ. Will TX EQ be made mode and/or input dependent? Setting TX EQ for voice screws up the audio response for digital mode (AFSK A and DATA A) operation. The same is true for RX EQ. I believe both RX and TX EQ are bypassed in DATA modes. If not, they should be. I'll mention this to Lyle. Per-mode settings are on the list, too. tnx Wayne N6KR 73, ... [Elecraft] K3 AM power control indicated power level
The power control sets power in AM all the way up to 120 Watts indicated, but only actually outputs around a quarter of the set power, I appreciate the peak output will be the displayed power, but everyone else displays the actual carrier level. Example my faithful TS-480SAT only allows the AM power to be set between 5 and 25 Watts, which seems more sensible than a K3 which has an apparent power out adjustable from 100 mW to 120 Watts. [Elecraft] Re: K3 SSB power setting
hi Wayne, to make a long story short - all ok now!! explanation between the lines: wayne burdick schrieb am 4 May 2008 um 10:04: when I transmit in SSB I am not able to get 100 % HF output. peak power is around 40 Watts whatever I do, reading on the LP-100 peak power meter. (using a Heil Proset with HC 5 Element) RF display is about 40 % max. But! when I key the transceiver with the CW paddle in SSB (new feature, very welcome!) I suddenly get full output also with normal speech. If I twist the power a little up or down, I am back on 40 % output, with one Dit in CW I can have the full power back. Have you tried doing power calibration on all bands as described in the manual? You need to do TUNE on each band, into a dummy load, at both 5 W and 50 W. This should get you reasonably close at 100 W. no I did not - until now. In the manual I misunderstood the first sentence of this chapter: is normally done at assembly time or by the factory. So I skiped this step :-( I did it now - and it seemed to help. However, for best initial power-setting accuracy in SSB modes and in DATA A and AFSK A, I'd recommend doing a quick TUNE. This is more accurate than setting the POWER control, which at present uses a lookup table to determine the approximate drive value required. I limited the tune power to 8 Watts - my automatic tuner does not need more to tune. When I set Tuner power to normal, the output power I see on the wattmeter corresponds very well with the K3 setting. Another observation: the ATU problem seems to be solved now. I don't know how this is linked, but it seems to work now, when I set the 2.7 filter frequency offset to its correct value of -.89 thank you vy much, 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Veni, Vedi, WeeWee: I came. [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter Calibration
In case anyone wants to compare, I just calibrated my K3's S-meter with an in-cal HP 8640B.The new firmware (Version 1.87/1.69) includes the magic S-meter that reads the same no matter what (pre-amp, attenuator, etc.) and since the firmware documentation said recalibration is required, I decide to give it a whirl. I calibrated at 14.100 MHz, and used the following levels: S9 = 50 microvolts S5 = 3.2 microvolts The results: SMTR SC = 16 (default is 14), SMTR OF = 20 (default is 24). The new absolute mode is amazing. After calibration, I can put in 50 microvolts and get S9 and 3.2 microvolts and get S5 in ATT, PRE or normal. By the way, the power control IS much more stable in digital modes (RTTY in DATA A), and the average power on speech (using an LP-100 vector wattmeter) is noticeably higher. Just a quick heads-up: Now that the new firmware has been released to much wider distribution, we've been notified of some issues we hadn't discovered earlier. The following items will be addressed very shortly with another release: 1. FM deviation set too high. 2. Selecting AFX (BIN mode) for receive causes transmit distortion in SSB modes (AFX DELAYx settings are OK). 3. Transverter power level may be too high after a band change, and the level can't be controlled by the POWER control. 4. CONFIG:TXG VCE menu entry appears to be non-functional. This menu entry is needed to establish a higher drive level for voice vs. CW modes. I'll do another posting as soon as revised firmware is ready. By the time he discovered this -- and the toolmaker got back from *his* vacation -- the tool was two weeks past due. I just heard on Friday that the tool is due on Tuesday, which means the first batch of subreceivers will go out late next week. Lyle and I have been taking advantage of the delay in sheet metal to get farther along with subreceiver firmware. I've been doing a lot of testing. Bob Cunnings wrote: I have set up for PSK31 operation with the new firmware and am getting exactly what I expect. I'm using a peak reading external meter and it agrees with the power commanded and the power indicated on the K3 front panel RF meter. First I adjusted audio drive to get 4 bars on the ALC meter using a pure tone (Digpan tune mode), and could then adjust power at will with the power indicated on the external peak reading meter tracking the power control nicely. PSK31 idle average power is about 50% of the key down (single tone) power. Using Digipan tune mode I see commanded power equal to indicated power when the external meter is set to read either peak or average (of course). When sending PSK31 idle I must have the meter set to read peak to get agreement with the front panel RF meter, which makes sense since the change notes state: The RF power bargraph shows approx. peak power... (in the SSB TX POWER CONTROL section). Are you adjusting audio drive to get 4 bars of ALC with a pure tone? Bob NW8L I have PWR set to 5W. I'm sending a pure tone at 1KHz which is my preferred center frequency for data modes. I increase the LINE level until I get 5 bars of ALC. If I stop when it gets to 4 the ALC display is flickering like the bars keep on being redrawn. I'm getting 5 bars with LINE = 36. However, the power meter reading stops increasing at about 2.8W, when LINE=32 which gives 4 bars. I cannot get more than 2.8W with PWR=5W when sending a pure tone. The meter reads exactly what PWR is set to in CW mode. When transmitting an idle signal the meter reads a bit less than half the value it showed on the pure tone. If I set PWR to 12W I'm currently getting about 6.5W on the pure tone. Now if I set PWR to 12W, giving as I say about 6.5W out, and then back the PWR control down, then the power starts to reduce once PWR gets to 6.5W, and when I get to 5W the meter also shows 5W out. It holds that level on subsequent transmits, and if I transmit an idle tone I get just over 2W shown on my (non peak reading) meter, which is what you would expect at that level. If I then press TUNE, and then try transmiting in DATA A again, either a pure tone or an idle signal, the output reverts to the lower level again. - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-FIRMWARE-UPDATE%3A---MCU-1.87%2C-DSP-1.69---%28Finally%21%29-tp17041394p17052261.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I first noticed it with a CW pitch of 600 Hz. The auto spot will eventually zero in after three or four tries but my ear is more accurate than the auto-spot. It may be band noise or simply timing out between CW characters because it is always accurate with a continuous tone (e.g. XG-2). Additional improvement possible via TX EQ. Will TX EQ be made mode and/or input dependent? Setting TX EQ for voice screws up the audio response for digital mode (AFSK A and DATA A) operation. The same is true for RX EQ. I personally did not like the extra bass in my audio. I have compensated for this using the TX EQ. But as you say, doing that is less than ideal for data modes. I also find, apart from the excessive FM deviation that I mentioned before, that the FM sounds a bit thin compared to SSB. I'm wondering if the FM audio needs a bit more de-emphasis. I agree that auto-spot doesn't seem as reliable as in earlier versions. When I inject a continuous tone, it works fine, always coming within a few Hz. For actual cw signals it now seems to be more easily fooled, often tuning low - noticeably different to me, one who uses the feature constantly. In previous versions I rarely needed to press spot more than once, and repeated invocation of auto-spot resulted in little change of frequency (a few Hz or so if the signal was stable). Now, once tuned in, repeated pressing of spot often results in the frequency jumping around some tens of Hz, rather than the more repeatable performance in earlier versions. I noticed it right away when operating cw today. [Elecraft] K3 FW 1.87 problem
Hi, Since getting my K3 # 384 in mid February, I have become an avid fan of PSK31 and RTTY. In my 50 years as a ham, I never used the digital modes before I got the K3. Everything worked fine for me until I updated to version 1.87 this morning. As usual, I set the windows XP volume control (audio out) slider to half way. I set the line control on the K3 to 2. For PSK31 I set the power out to 25 watts. I use the Digipan software and DATA A for PSK31. For RTTY I use the MMTTY software and MFSK A. With that setup and FW v. 1.78 I would have no bars showing for ALC (as it should be for digital modes) and 3-4 bars showing for RF out (25-30 watts). For RTTY I had used 100 watts out with the same line level setting of 2. I had been very successful in making over 200 digital QSOs in 86 countries in a little over two months. Now with FW v. 1.87, I find that I get 5 bars of ALC with a line-in level setting of 2. And, I get virtually no RF output (1 bar) unless I set the RF out asked-for to 50 watts. At the 50 watt-asked setting I get about 25 watts out (with more heat). If I drop the line-in level to 1, I get no ALC bars and also I get no RF out at any power-asked setting. I haven't tried RTTY yet with v. 1.87, but it is sure to be messed up too. My conclusion is that while 1.87 contains a lot of good fixes, in the process the ALC behavior with respect to digital modes got broken. Also, we really need more resolution for the line-in level control. With v.1.87 it is essentially an on-off switch that goes from 0 to 5 bars on the ALC meter as one tunes between 1 an 2. I'm just reporting my experiences with the new FW for what they are worth. I know all these things will get fixed in time. Meanwhile, I may have to fall back to 1.78. Many thanks and 73, John, W2GW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)
After posting about my problem with not getting the dialled up power output in DATA A mode, it occurred to me that perhaps it might be a good idea to run the Low-Power (5W) Wattmeter Calibration. When I assembled my K3 I never had to touch this adjustment because it produced 5W as accurate as I could measure it right out of the box. Well, now I can't seem to get this to work. I tuned to 20m (14.071 fwiw), put the ATU out of circuit and connected my dummy load power meter to ANT1, which is selected. I set PWR=5.0. In the CONFIG menu I located the WMTR LP menu entry, which has the value 100. When I press TUNE the power meter reads 3W, which perhaps not coincidentally is the power level I set for tuning using the TUN PWR menu entry. When I press TUNE the SWR is displayed not the value of WMTR LP, and rotating the VFO A knob seems to have no effect on the output power anyway. I don't think there is anything wrong with the power meter calibration as PWR=5.0 produces 5W on CW and FM, but how exactly is the low power wattmeter calibration supposed to work? - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-FIRMWARE-UPDATE%3A---MCU-1.87%2C-DSP-1.69---%28Finally%21%29-tp17041394p17052554.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
