Re: [Elecraft] Yamahs CM500 Headset
You might try Heil's mike cartridge that they use in the ProSet ic - it is an electret that was made for Icom, but I got very good audio reports with the ic on the K2 and the K3 both from DX stations and domestic alike. The CM500 is 'different'. I've tried several TX EQ settings - I guess it has a lot to do with individual voices. And it seemed to me that the screen on the microphone got rid of most of the breath sounds. 73HankK8DD Ignacy wrote: > I compared Yamaha CM500 to my other headset: Sony 32 Ohms headphones with > Heil HC5 attached via piece of wire and wrapped with electrical tape. > > The Yamaha headphones are better partly because they are 130 Ohm and > therefore copy more low tones. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Check Your Buttons
Paul, I am very surprised that this has not come up before! My K3 is #570 and it has had 4 front panel boards (a couple for what I called flaky or just bad switches and the rest for other reasons) and the same problem you describe is still there. The latest one is the best, but I still get some strange things happening - mostly with the BAND and MODE switches, but it has occurred occasionally with other switches, and it is not very reproducible - it can be very intermittent, or it can happen fairly often. When the K3 went back to Elecraft the beginning of the year for a different problem they checked out the Front Panel switches and said the switch operation is fine, but it's not. I have seen the problem on a fairly new K3 owned by a ham near here I have seen the problem on the K3s at the Elecraft booth at Hamcom. Again, it is intermittent. For the longest time I figured it was me and the way I press the buttons on #570 I did try SW test and Sca Adc - at times the beeps were slow, unevenly spaced or did not appear at all and it did not seem to me that the switches with flickering scan codes were the switches that were causing mis-operations. But when I press and hold the ALT to switch sidebands, and the radio changes three modes, maybe a band, reverses sideband and turns on the RX ANT, it causes one to wonder but K3support does not have any of these problems! So I have decided that the K3 switches are a trade-off to have the best receiver that is out there in the Amateur market. And so are the several other operational quirks, but again I can put up with those when and if they come up to the top of the "upcoming K3 features" list. Like you, I'm out of warranty, so $400 is out of the question for yet another Front Panel board. Besides, I don't think it can be fixed. 73HankK8DD Paul Ferguson wrote: > I own K3 #757 and recently noticed some of the front panel buttons were not > working. You're right - the 3.30/2.26 NR, although it is slow, it is really good once you find the setting that works best for the situation. And although it cannot be readily duplicated, it is still a problem that would most likely cause those who have had it happen to see it as a major problem, and not use that MCU/DSP set. Re: [Elecraft] Beta 3.30 So How does it work?
It appears to have something for almost everybody but it still takes a couple of seconds to kick in. And if the signal goes away (on CW - don't know about SSB) it changes. Then the signal comes back and it changes. At least it did the couple times I tried it. Personally I like the good old NR from the "other JA radio". You hit the NR button and it makes the CW signal that you could barely hear in the noise readable. That's all I want. Plain and simple. I don't want to be screwing with knobs and levels and all that when I'm trying to run, or at least keep rate up. Make it F9-1 - NR for dummies like me! 73HankK8DD David and Dianne on Comcast wrote: > Hi Everyone, > > After reading literally dozens of postings on the 'problems' with NR in > Beta 3.27, I have seen only 2 responses about NR in Beta 3.30 since its > release. > > Not being one to jump into beta versions too fast myself, I ask: > > 1. Tony . Yeah, I couldn't have said it better about the NR as it is now - you nailed it. See what the next few DSP f/w's have! I had an IC 746 (not PRO) - the NR on it was great and it was just that - Noise Reduction, pure and simple. We took it to V47 about 6 years ago and it was almost as good as the K2/100 w/o the KDSP2. [Elecraft] Cash for Radio Clunkers
Now is the time to upgrade your old radio. In an effort to further revive the weak economy, the government announced that it started a new Cash for Radio Clunkers program on August 3. The program is aimed at members of the Amateur Radio Service, also known as ham radio operators. Operators with transceivers with less than 80 db Blocking Dynamic Range (2 kHz spacing) will be eligible to trade in their old units (which must be crushed) for new transceivers and will receive a credit based upon the improved BDR. Improvements of 20 dB are eligible for $100 credit and 40dB or better are eligible for $200. Operators must be currently licensed and must show proof of purchase of the old transceiver, which must be in working order. Tube transceivers are deemed to be museum pieces and not eligible for this program. See your retailer for further details. But I would not want baggage handlers anywhere to touch it! And you could probably get a switching power supply in the 1510 with it. The 1520 with a 1527 might be good to check in, but it doesn't look like it has wheels to pull through airports like the 1510 does. A 1527 alone looks like it might be about the same as a Rose Kopp case. I used a Rose Kopp case to take take my K3 to Nicaragua and was fairly apprehensive any time anyone came close to it! It is a very nice case for traveling by car or to Field Day etc but not on an airplane. This winter if I take the K3 again it will go carry on in a 1510 with wheels. 73HankK8DD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Band changing/mode changing
Merv You didn't say if you are using a PC or not With a PC, you can do this by clicking on DX spots and use a program that recognizes QSX in the spot. You might have to put out a spot to get them both on the screen. Otherwise . With no PC, and probably a better way to do it Put VFO A 14025, VFO B 14027, CW, set your filter for each VFO if needed, SPLIT on and enter that into a memory location with M>V and M1 Then put VFO A 14195, VFO B 14200, SSB, set your filter for each VFO if needed, SPLIT on and enter that into M2 with M>V Now V>M M1 and you are on the CW pileup And V>M M2 and you are on the SSB pileup But . In the heat of switching back and forth you must be VERY careful to use the V>M button - do not miss and use the V>M button because you will end up losing one of the memories and have two memories the same. There is no safeguard on V>M . That is supposedly "on the list" to have a double tap of the V>M before it writes to the memory location, but there are too many other things ahead of it, I guess. 73HankK8DD Merv Schweigert wrote: > Color me stupid, but I have not come up with a way to change > bands / modes on a band efficiently, I am sure someone has > or does this all the time, would appreciate some input. > Read before answering because I do know how to change bands > and modes, but not in the fashion I would like to. > > Example: single receiver. > > VFO A = 14025 Split with VFO B 14027 > > I wish to go to another DX pileup on SSB > > VFO A= 14.195 split with VFO B = 14200 > > And switch back and forth to monitor/ call either > freq to work the DX. > > > How can this be done simply to swap between those two modes > and freq sets? > If I use the Band button I can go between bands to monitor > a pile up on another band, how do you do this on one band? > Also needs to remember the freq you are using, IE: if you > tuned the split to 14205, and switch to CW, when you come > back to SSB needs to be the last freq you used. > > This is easy peaszy on all my other radios using band stacking, > its just a press of the 14mhz band button, once for the CW > and once for SSB, and they remember the last tuned freq. > Seems I am missing something easy here on the K3? > Thanks 73 Merv KH7C > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Off-Topic: CW sending vs. recieving speed
I've never understood that line of thought. Why would you take target practice at little tykes? That's unreal. On the other hand people will talk on cell phones while driving and people will pick up a microphone and talk on 2m. That's all ok. But talk about talking on cw . You don't have a cell phone or a microphone to drop if things go wrong - just take your hand off the key or paddle and let it sit there. And what's the difference between copying phone or CW in your head? That's not an argument either! There are several buttons/switches on the front panel that I can press (tap or hold - it doesn't make a difference) and sometimes nothing happens. Then there are times that I want to switch sidebands (ALT) and I hold the button and sometimes it switches 1, 2, or 3 modes and then reverses the sideband. Same thing has happened with the BAND buttons. And I no longer have a light touch on the buttons. And, yes, I have turned on the button beeps and confirmed that when nothing happens, there are no beeps and when there are multiple actions the beeps are strange. This is the 4th or 5th front panel board that has been in the radio, and this one is better. One ham said that I just know when to press them when they aren't being scanned! But happens on mine and I've done it on both K3s at the booth in Hamcom. My K3 did make a trip back to Elecraft and they checked out the front panel (among other things) and said the buttons/switches are fine. My logging programs (Logger32, Writelog, N1MM and Win-Test) keep me from using a lot of the buttons/switches - and that's fine. It's still the best receiver I've ever used in spite of the buttons/switches and knobs! 73HankK8DD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 configuration file(s)
Niel . The configuration files have some "radio specific" things, but most of it should be able to be shared, but it seems not many want to share how they have their K3 set up. I have a spreadsheet - actually several - at http://k8dd.com/k3/ The http://k8dd.com/k3/K3_Settings.xls files are what I have had in my K3. Plus there is a lot of other information on memories, programmable function keys, etc. I have been very happy with the settings in the latest spreadsheet in some of the major contests both from the US and from DX. Several people have said they never looked at my settings, but they liked the format of the spreadsheet and deleted my settings and put theirs in! So you can see how mine is set up - or was set up in the past. Or you can download the latest date spreadsheet, wipe out my settings and you have a good form to fill out with your settings. I think it is good up to 3.14 MCU. Feel free to use the spreadsheet, with or without my settings. There is also a calibration procedure writeup - In the order that they are run with a new K3. I took this from the Operating Manual PDF and set it up the way it seemed the tests were run on a new radio, mostly because I've replaced the Front Panel PCB so many times that now I also have a "Front Panel replacement" writeup that I have not put on the web page yet! Feel free to use any of the files on http://k8dd.com/k3/ If you like them give me credit. Re: [Elecraft] Filter Selection Approach
That is a lot of filters ... 2) Unless you are in very heavy QRM/pile-up situations the roofing filter does not provide a lot of "value added" since the final bandwidth is determined by the DSP. The 1 KHz filters add little benefit vs. the 1.8 KHz or 1.5 KHz filters. I would disagree regarding the value or benefit of the 1 KHz filter. Originally I had, for CW, 1800, 500 & 200 filters. Since I normally set the width to 700 Hz for normal non contest CW operating, it seemed that I was having problems with loud signals within about 900 to 1800 HZ hitting the AGC. So when a 1000 HZ filter became available to trade for my 1800 HZ filter I jumped on it and have not looked back! Last year in CQ WW CW I have had a chance to sit down on 20 meters with a K3 with 400 & 250 HZ filters. I was very happy to switch radios back to my K3 with 1000, 500 and 200 HZ filters. To my ears the 500 & 200 filters were a definite advantage sorting out the weaker European signals in between the loud east coast U.S. stations. This was not at all a scientific test - just how it sounded to me! Both K3s were using the same firmware. And I really think if I had purchased a K3 with no roofing filters, like I've seen suggested, I would have most likely sold the K3 and gone back to a K2! Just my thoughts. 73HankK8DD -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Filter-Selection-Approach-tp2630347p2636834.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Re: K2 - CAT
Fred I have never had luck running either the K2 or K3 with AUTO baud rate. I'd set the baud rate to 4800. And I've seen on the Writelog reflector recommendations not to use AUTO with most radios. 73 HankK8DD The RS-232 CAT for my K2 has always worked well. Getting ready for the OK RTTY, I find that it keeps giving weird frequencies, none of which are right. It seems to do it about once a second. I'm running WriteLog, the rig is set to K2, and the baud rate to AUTO, which has always worked. Anyone got any ideas? If I can get this fixed, I think I'll just leave the K2 set on RTTY ... this happens every time I try to get it working with the laptop again. I have 2 USB adapters, both Prolific bridges, one from Elecraft and one from RS. The RS one has worked in the past. Open to any ideas. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2009 Cal QSO Party 3-4 Oct 2009 - www.cqp.org -- 'Never argue with an idiot. - Original Message - From: "Gary Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> With that, what filter should I go with to maximise my CW experience? Like John W2XS I went with the 500 & 200 Hz filters. In CQ WPX CW I could slowly tune up 20M and work the European stations in between the loud east coast stations - it was like they were not there. Very impressive! And no ringing.I have not cranked the width down to 50 Hz, but the times that I did were pretty effective. I had a 1.8 filter that I thought was going to be good for SSB and OK for CW. I didn't like it on SSB and it was too wide on CW - stations 1 KHz away would nail the AGC, so I traded it for a 1.0 filter. So for CW I believe that the 1.0, 500, 200 is an excellent combination, although I have not had the chance to use the 8 pole narrow CW filters if one is to believe the numbers that W4ZV, W4TV, and others have come up with comparing the 5 and 8 pole filters, it doesn't appear that there is a whole lot of difference between them. It has less hiss and just sounds better - at least to my crummy ears.. I have played around some with the RX equalizer in the K3 and have improved it some but has anyone had time to really find out what settings will best mirror the K2 with the KAF2? Thanks and 73, Bill NZ0T Bill I tend to agree - the K2 with the K2DSP does sound better on CW with the DSP / NR turned on than the K3 with NR turned on. At least to my old ears. On the K3, with NR off AGC SLP = 12 AGC THR = 5, it sounds pretty close to my K2 with no DSP / NR. ( My CONFIG & MENU settings are on http://k8dd.com/k3/K3_Settings11-03-08.xls ). I have recorded both with Audacity. Without DSP both the K2 and K3 have great sounding audio. When you turn on the K2 DSP the signal may sound a bit hollow, but the waveform of the CW is not destroyed. With the K3's NR turned on with any of the levels set the leading edge of the CW signal starts to flatten out or go soft and destroy the CW waveform - the leading edge goes anywhere from looking like a .45 bullet to a 30-06! It does, however bring the signal up out of the noise, but at higher speeds it makes it hard to copy. I recorded a CW contest in the spring and sent sound clips to some friends and some QRP ops that I worked - one comment was "I've got to check my rig - that keying sounds really soft." It wasn't their keying - with the NR off they sounded fine. The end result is -- I don't use NR or RX EQ. As has been stated, RX EQ on CW causes very low audio when the bandwidth is 200 Hz or below. I have not tried the MCU and DSP that came with the K3, but I do not remember that NR altered the received CW waveform like it does now. And I have no idea what NR does to signals on SSB That's my story and I'm sticking to it 73HankK8DD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I guess going between the two is a lot easier or quicker than turning the Bandwidth knob. They used to get a lot of use (actually #I did) when I would be chasing DX spots, or typing frequencies, from the logging program because when I'd change band and/or mode several times the K3 would forget what the filter setting was supposed to be for the mode. I would rather have them both the same for the DSP filters and have them store the power level - 100 watts for barefoot and 70 watts for driving the amp.Although I could leave the K3 set at 70 watts all the time - if I can't work them at 70 watts I very seriously doubt that I'm going to work them at 100 watts! Re: [Elecraft] K3 and recording SSB & CW
N1MM records QSO's where Writelog records continuously. Using N1MM in the NA QSO Party, for 424 QSOs, I used 500 Mb. A 25 second QSO took 1,101 KB Audio Format PCM 11.025, 16 Bit, Stereo. With Writelog one hour (3582.78 seconds) is 6,998 KB Audio format MPEG Layer-3 16 kBits/s, 11,025 Hz, Mono. Quite possibly I could have cut down the audio format to something like PCM 8 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono 7 kb/sec. That would have saved about 4,000 KB. But the 8 kHz quality was a fair amount less quality than the 11025 Hz in WPX SSB using an IC-746 with fixed line output. So I guess it depends on which program you are using to record, how much quality you want and how big your hard drive is! 73Hank K8DD - Original Message - From: "David Cutter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Elecraft" Cc: "Elecraft Reflector" Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 12:07 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and recording SSB & CW Is there an optimum setting for digital recording (bit rate?) that will maximise memory capacity? Re: [Elecraft] K3 and recording SSB
When you record both XMT and RCV audio the level is controlled by the AF Gain control on the K3 rather than a fixed level output. To keep from distorting on the laptop you have to keep from turning the AF Gain up too high, which can cause distortion on the laptop. This can make it difficult to copy weak stations on the air. I have used Writelog and N1MM to test this. But if the laptop is independent of the logging PC you could use Audacity - a free audio program. 73HankK8DD - Original Message - From: "Jeff Kinzli N6GQ" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 8:43 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and recording SSB Hey Folks, I'm planning a serious effort for CQWW SSB in October and would like to record the entire contest digitally to my laptop (not the logging computer, a different one). I guess the new robust parts are warranty, but replacing them isn't! Elecraft is sending me the 2 new more robust diodes. I do not have the equipment to remove the old ones and replace them, nor do I have the desire to work on anything smaller than a 1/8 watt resistor. So . is there anyone within 50 miles or so of Lapeer, MI who can change these new diodes when I get them? And if you don't have a K3, this would be a good chance to see one and try it out! 73HankK8DD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. ARCI, and I think GQRP, had QRP on SSB limited to 10 watts, I think in an attempt to account for the disparity between the two modes QRP-ARCI defines QRP as: QRP operation for QRP-ARCI purposes is defined as operation with a transmitter power output of 5 watts or less (CW)(A1) and 10 watts PEP or less (SSB)(A3J). QRP-ARCI awards are based on these output levels. . I believe most other QRP organizations agree with this, although there are some groups / contests that specify that SSB QRP is 5 watts (or less) output on all modes. Re: [Elecraft] K3: recommendations wanted for NR setting
Pre Firmware 2.20 I uses AGC SLP 4 and AGC THR 8 to make the K3 sound like the K2 AGC. At least on CW. And used NR F2-4. That worked great at Field Day. Since Firmware 2.20 I cannot find a setting that accomplishes two things Sounds like a K2 and the audio level for NR on & off is about the same And with NR on (most any setting) now the received CW sounds soft, or very slow attack time. At higher speeds it is possible to miss a leading dit in a character. But at this point AGC SLP and THR both equal to 2 works fine (to my ears) with loud and weak signals, but when I turn on NR the received signal goes very soft. If I set NR = F1-1 through F1-3 it isn't too bad. 73 HankK8DD - Original Message - From: "Vic Abell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2008 7:18 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3: recommendations wanted for NR setting I just completed K3 1162 and am interested in setting its NR to an optimal value for combating summer QRN. Re: [K2] [Elecraft] BAND+ push button failure...
Not at all rare on a well used K2! On two K2s I changed Mode, A/B, A=B, PRE/ATT, AGC, & XFIL and a couple others. The A/B and A=B were the worst (and most frustrating when they would bounce). On one of them a new switch bounces, but only occasionally. I bought 24 switches and have about a half dozen left. 73HankK8DD The most frequently used push button switches (for me they are BAND+, BAND-, MENU, MODE, XFIL, A/B, A=B) do go bad after a while. I own a pair of K2/100's and I've had to replace all of the switches I've already mentioned on each rig. I'm friends with a couple of other local hams and they have had to replace some their frequently used switches on their K2's as well. Re: [Elecraft] Using Voice Files along with Mike Input on a K3
Ed . If you look at http://www.writelog.com/support/wlso2r.pdf it shows how to set up the mike for SSB contesting. If you ignore the Left Rig and the W5XD Multi+ keyer and just look at the Right Rig and microphone setup you will see how to keep the audio from the other ops out of your mike. In N1MM configurer you can select the line to mute when playing wav files. This is also mostly the Mic input. Check http://pages.cthome.net/n1mm/html/English/BasicFunctions.htm#Recording_Wav_files for recording info. I have found that if the MON level is turned up so you can hear yourself, with MIC + Line in you will get feedback when you activate PTT. I'm assuming this will not happen if the mike is plugged into the sound card. Also, if you want to record both TX and RX audio in the contest you have to select =PHONES. This will send TX & RX audio to the sound card at a level controlled by the AF Gain control (NOT Line Out level) and possibly overdrive your sound card. 73 HankK8DD - Original Message - From: "Ed Steeble" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I tried to use a K3 in the IOTA contest on SSB but ran into a problem. I couldn't figure out how to satisfactory key the K3 with wave files from N1MM Logger and also use a Heil Headset. Did I over look something? A fellow team member and I considered paralleling the mike and sound card input but we didn't want a live mike while wave files were playing. Allow the PITCH to be changed without having to listen to the tone or with the tone. Allow the sidetone level to be changed without having to listen to it or with the tone.. Allow the sidetone to be independently controlled (and be able to change it while you are transmitting) or AF Gain controlled. Personally I like the PITCH to be adjustable without having to listen to it. And the sidetone adjustable without having to listen to it. And the sidetone level independent of the AF Gain control. Not sure I'd like to have it vary with the AF Gain. I think I like having it as a reference audio level. Mine is set at 25. What I would like is the option to adjust the PITCH without hearing the sidetone. In other words, listening to a weak signal I want to adjust it's pitch (offset) for best copy. Different signal conditions can warrant the use of different pitches for optimum copy. But you can't do this with the sidetone overriding the received audio. Re: [Elecraft] RE: [dxlab] K3 will keep CW filters when QSYing SSB
I don't see this with Logger32 . But I had to add some lines to the .ini file so the program would change the filter to what I specified - 700 Hz on CW, 2.7 KHz on SSB and 1.0 KHz on Data. If the program does not tell the K3 how to set the filter when you change band and / or mode it will revert to the previous mode and you have to use NORM. At least with the current firmware! 73Hank K8DD -Original Message- From: Laurent FERRACCI Hi friends, I am posting this message to the Elecraft, microHAM and DXLab lists, because all three are involved. Sorry for crossposting. Anyway, it probably won't appear in the Elecraft list, because this list considers me as a spammer (?). Say i'm listening to CW on my K3, and see a interesting spot on Spotcollector. I click on it, Commander and my microKEYER will QSY the K3 to the spot frequency. However, i usually end up in SSB with the previous filter setting, ie the narrow CW filter, and of course it's not enough for SSB. Of course, i only have to press the "NORM" button to broaden it, but it's annoying. I don't have the same problem when QSYing from SSB to CW (the width is reduced as it should). [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and Logger32 logging program
If you click on a DX spot, or type in the frequency to change to another band and / or mode and the filters do not switch to the default settings And you are using Logger32 - Here is the answer to get SSB settings on SSB, Data settings on Data and CW settings on CW sent to the K3! In the help file there is a section on the K3, but that is for pre-MCU 2.00. Here is an update to how it works for MCU 2.00 and above: Filter selection The K2 and K3 should always store those filter setting by each mode. If you select the mode by manually or clicking DX spot then in the future they will select the filter by stored setting. There is another way to select a filter directly from Logger32. Add one or two of the following section in the Logger32.ini. “n” in FWn is Filter number of your K2. FW is the DSP bandwidth on your K3 (see examples below). Doing some investigation with the command tester in the Firmware Utility, I think there is a bug in the K3 firmware. It is not changing the filter bandwidth if a band change is made by CAT command and this results in a mode change because the mode last used on the new band is different from the mode you were previously using. If you are on 14.025 CW, and you change frequency to 28280 by sending the command FA0002828; the K3 changes to that 10m frequency. The mode used on 10m is the mode that was used the last time you were on 10m, but the filter bandwidth remains the same as it was on 14MHz. So if you were last on 10m using SSB, you will end up in SSB with a CW filter bandwidth. If you were last on CW, you will be in CW mode on 10m. This explains why you observe that the filter sometimes changes, and sometimes doesn't. If you were last on 10m in CW, if the software sends a mode change command after the frequency change command, the K3 will go to 10m CW and then change to SSB which will cause the filter bandwidth to change correctly. If the K3 was last in SSB on 10m, then it will change to 10m SSB and the narrow bandwidth become wrongly set as the new SSB filter bandwidth. The subsequent mode change command won't do anything. - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A--K3-More-on-changing-band-mode-and-filters-don%27t-tp17576785p17579881.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] [K3]More on changing band/mode and filters don't
More information: I just downloaded DX4WIN demo. It does the same thing - K3 on 14.025, CW, 700 Hz. Click on a spot for 28280. Radio goes to 28280, Mode changes to SSB, but filter stays at 700 Hz. - Original Message From: hank k8dd <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Elecraft Reflector Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2008 11:52:05 AM Subject: [Elecraft] [K3]Changing band/mode and filters don't I'm not sure how many use Logger32, but when I am chasing DX spots and change band and / or mode, the filters do not go to the default settings. The same thing happens if I type in a frequency. Logger32 knows, from the band plan, which mode to use by the frequency. If I go from, for example - 14022, CW, 700 Hz to 7133, SSB the K3 will not always go to the 2.7 KHz filter - sometimes it stays on 700 Hz and sometimes it goes to the II default of 400 Hz. I is 700 for CW and 2.7 for SSB. II is 400 for CW and 2.7 for SSB. The same thing can happen when I (rarely) use the Band up/down to change bands. If, when I go to another band, the frequency there is on a different mode the filter does not always go to to that default setting. So is it a firmware thing or is it a Logger32 thing? 73Hank -- 'Never argue with an idiot. With respect Kent, (and I know your email was not aimed at me) I did not ask for any such reinvention of the front panel. I simply stated that it is easy (and frustrating) to overwrite memories. I am also not afraid of exerting myself to learn the radio. My point is that it should not be possible to 'accidentally' overwrite a memory. I do not need multiple stacking thingummies or anything like that, I simply want to be able to put memories in there and not be able to overwrite them by not concentrating enough. During a contest or some other frantic time, my brain does not always cover every eventuality. Come to think of it, it is not that much good at other times :) As an Elecraft lover for over 6 years I have no wish to use another radio. I simply wish to be able to use my K3 as easily as possible and as it is basically firmware driven, I see no problem in wishing the radio to cover my humanity. If nobody asked for functionality or reported issues, the K3 would not be where it is today. 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC DX Cluster Member RSGB, GQRP K2 #4044 |K3 #455 Hear, hear -- Well said, Ian. And then it would be nice to hear the memory when you press M>VFO as you step through the memories. 73Hank K8DD -- 'Never argue with an idiot. Or HOLD NOTCH and it goes to MANUAL NOTCH and you can adjust the notch frequency. Tap it and it goes off. or The ability to use WIDTH while you are transmitting. And have the buttons on the right side work while transmitting, and not screw up the CW being sent or Have both RX and TX audio go out the LINE OUT at a fixed level, not at the AF Gain level. or PTT should over ride any CW delay settings when not in QSK. No delay at the end of a memory from the PC (CQ, Exchange, etc) when using PTT control. But you would want a CW delay when sending from the paddle/keyer Those would be some of my thoughts. 73 HankK8DD -- 'Never argue with an idiot. And if you press most any of the buttons while there is a CW signal being transmitted the CW will sound really strange, the PTT delay goes away causing the amp relay to operate with every element. And it does this until the PTT goes away with the end of the memory from the PC, or you hit the ESC key. If I remember right, RIT and the Speed & Mic gain controls are about the only ones that work while transmitting. [Elecraft] K3 and contest logging programs
Has anyone tried using Writelog or N1MM with the K3 on SSB using the program as a voice keyer, feeding the Line In jack in the back? Did it work? If it did, how did you do it? It appears to me that you have to switch MIC SEL from front or rear panel mic input to Line In. 73HankK8DD -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-and-contest-logging-programs-tp17039832p17039832.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
