[Elecraft] K2/100 + KAT100 donation offer

2023-04-06 Thread Augie "Gus" Hansen
KN1CBR, a long-time Elecraft user and builder of several K2
transceivers, is downsizing and has a K2 + KAT100 system that he wants
to donate to an organization that helps new hams get started. Donee must
be a school or 501(c)(3) organization that will use the gear rather than
sell it for cash.

If you are interested and feel qualified to participate in this effort
please contact Ed (Ted on CW) directly at this email address:

    eda...@law.du.edu

The system is in excellent condition and works well. Here are the
components offered as a package.

Have a look at N2WL's QRZ.com page, down toward the end. He has had a

I have had panels made for my K3S+P3 combo, a KPA1500, and a K4D, plus a

Nice job Andy. Looks like we've both had some fun with these antennas
that have become quite popular in recent years.

My interest in Mag Loop antennas started back in the early 1980s, and I
have designed and built a couple of dozen over the years since, mostly
as experiments to gain knowledge and experience, and several to help
friends who lived under extreme antenna restrictions.

The two pictures in this Dropbox folder show one incarnation of a mag
loop that uses flat mill stock for the main loop, and a trombone-style
capacitor for tuning:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gqbzz60bcwkc54h/AACAjWK6JFfyLN9qcvq9oSrqa?dl=0

My capacitor design uses PEXX tubing for the dielectric layer (must be
protected from UV), and has fiberglass stiffeners inside the sliding
part. The PEXX allowed me to run up to about 300 watts. And the
stiffeners hold the tubes in line at the low capacity end of travel to
prevent misalignment (sloppy tuning).

I long ago moved to all copper loops and vacuum variables to handle high
power and obtain better efficiency. An example of a two-turn version of
a 40-80m mag loop is on my QRZ.com page:

    https://www.qrz.com/db/KB0YH

It uses 7/8" Heliax (the shield) as the main loop conductor. Kinda
heavy, so some of my newer mag loops use 1/2" Heliax or soft copper
tubing instead. Performance suffers a little, but no one notices the
difference.

Have fun and keep safe.

I had a similar problem with one of my early mag loop attempts about 20
years ago. If your loop is a single turn type you could arrange for the
tuning cap to be at the bottom with the coupling loop at the top. That
puts the voltage-neutral point where the birds will perch, and they will
have no effect on the tuning.

The birds don't bother my two-turn mag loop (pix on my QRZ page) at all

Re: [Elecraft] Experiences using a portable HF loop

2017-04-22 Thread Augie "Gus" Hansen

On 4/21/2017 9:00 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote:

The very BEST magnetic loops are incredibly inefficient, yet like any
"incredibly inefficient" antenna one can make amazing contacts on them when
conditions are right.

If you use the suggestion that the loop perimeter (circumference for a
circular loop) be 1/10 of a wavelength, then efficiency is quite low -
on the order of 10%. This is the guidance given for small receiving
loops to get the best nulls.

However, a transmitting loop can have a perimeter of up to 1/3
wavelength and still have a constant current throughout its length
(within 1% per John Kraus). This constant loop current is what defines a
magnetic loop.

The problem is with resistive losses. The day we have room-temperature
superconductors, we will have efficient small transmitting loops. Until
then, only a few percent of the power applied is radiated.

My loops are typically a bit short of 1/3 wavelength at the high
frequency of the tuning range, and no less that 1/10 wavelength at the
low end. The efficiency of a 3/10 wavelength loop, for example, is in
excess of 90% provided the resistances are kept low. I typically use the
outer (shield) of hard line for the loop conductor and a series vacuum
variable capacitor for remote tuning.

It is also possible to use multiple turns to reduce the size of a
magnetic loop even further. There is an example of a 40-80 meter mag
loop on my QRZ page that uses 7/8-inch hard line in a two-turn
configuration. Even though only 4.5 feet in diameter, it works quite
well when compared to a typical back yard inverted vee or low dipole,
and it can be hidden in an attic, the back of a garage, or tucked out of
sight among trees or bushes.

Re: [Elecraft] Magnetic Loop Antenna Question

2016-11-13 Thread Augie "Gus" Hansen
The length of hardline provides both an inductor (the shield) and a
series capacitor (the center conductor to shield). It is an interesting
experimental loop antenna, but not particularly versatilefor general use.

There is a picture of my two-turn mag loop for 40-80m on my QRZ .com
page. I wrote an article for antenneX several years ago describing this
antenna, but it is behind the "pay wall" so I can't post it anywhere else.

The main loop is about 4.5 feet in diameter formed by using the shield
of 7/8-inch Heliax. The loop is remotely tuned over the coax by a DC
motor-driven vacuum variable capacitor. The antenna can handle between
500 watts and 1KW depending on frequency if the VVC is stout enough
(15kV at 60 amps). The driver loop is about 1/5 the diameter of the main
loop diameter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio quality

2016-09-16 Thread Augie "Gus" Hansen

Hi Jim,

...
It's all very simple physics. Look at the size of the loudspeaker. Its
low frequency output is limited by its size as a fraction of a
wavelength. The K3 and K3S are designed as compact, light weight
radios. The speaker used is quite good for its size. If you want big
bass, you need a big loudspeaker (or at least one a lot bigger than
the little guy in the K3 and K3S). BUT -- ham radio is NOT about high
fidelity, it's about COMMUNICATIONS quality sound.

Having the sub receiver doubles my listening pleasure. I use a pair of
old RS Minimus-7 speakers with my original K3, and am using a pair of
Jensen Powered Speakers (JPS 45) with my K3S. Getting excellent sound
from both systems.

Nearly a century ago, Bell Labs learned through a lot of research that
all it takes for communications is smooth (flat) response between
about 500 Hz and 3 kHz, and the telephone system was designed around
that bandwidth.

As a former Bell head (BTL in Denver) working on PBX systems in the
1970s I was exposed to the training for many telephone products. The
plain old telephone service, POTS, was designed for a 3000 Hz bandwidth
(300-3300).

In the 1960s while earning my EE degree I worked in the broadcast
business. Our main studio to transmitter link was an equalized line, but
the backup circuit was a POTS line. Fortunately we didn't need to press
it into service often, but on those occasions it sure sounded crappy by
comparison to the usual AM 6 kHz or so eq'd circuit. And much more so
when we added an FM station to the mix.

Re: [Elecraft] Koss SB-45 Headset, update on comfort

2016-01-06 Thread Augie "Gus" Hansen

Hi Jim,

Electret and dynamic mics are equally good for ham radio. Use whatever
comes with the headset you like and be happy. All that matters is that
electret mics need bias turned on and dynamic mics do not.

Do you know why Elecraft calls the power provided to an electret element
BIAS? Unlike the large form condenser microphone elements that need both
polarizing potential and preamp power, usually provided via a "phantom
power" circuit, an electret element is permanently polarized. The power
applied via the phantom circuit is actually providing only the drain
voltage for the FET preamp in the electret microphone capsule, not any
kind of biasing voltage.

Of course we have similar terminology used in systems that provide
control voltages or operating power to remote equipment: The so-called
BIAS-TEE used to inject and extract power over a coaxial cable, for
example.

I haven't found any official documentation for these types of circuits
that uses the BIAS moniker. Are there any references that you might
point to?

Agreed - you can afford to experiment and learn a lot about antennas by

an old edition at a swap meet or from a ham friend is highly recommended.

Put up as many as you can as big as you can. If they stay up, they
were too small.

Nah, let's get Craig started in the right direction. When I got into ham
radio in the 1970s I often heard the expression "if your antenna didn't
fall down last winter it wasn't big enough." But that's kind of like
saying "If you're driving on the highway and you don't crash you're not
driving fast enough."

I prefer to suggest that we should try to design and construct antennas
well so that they stay up and work right. Putting a pulley and weight on
the support of one end of a dipole suspended between two trees to
accommodate tension changes from wind is an example of good technique.

Happy antenna building Craig.

You might be confusing the Elecraft W1 with the older Oak Hills WM-1 (and later

The WM1 Computing Meter is a product of Autek Research. It is a very

reading capabilities. SWR and power are shown simultaneously on separate
meters. This is a very good quality meter that I have used for many years.

For my QRP work I also have the OHR WM-2 wattmeter. It, too, is a
quality instrument, and it allows you to make accurate forward and
reverse power measurements on 10/1/0.1 watt scales. (SWR is not shown

area hear signals S9 +5 while these only register S1 at best on the
K3. Antenna type and height are almost identical as I have.

Attenuator is not on and noise reduction has minimal effect. Turning
up the RF gain does not help. Signals on other bands seem to be
normal. Has anyone experienced this?

Check to be sure you don't have the RX antenna input selected on 40m
without an RX antenna connected. This feature is remembered per band.

display (12 o'clock) so you cannot see anything when the mini is on
the table, it's not readable! That's a big big minus! :-( You have to
put it almost vertical (difficult as it has it's center of gravity too
high, so it easily tilts over the front then) which is impossible with
the bail supplied/mounted, it's too short. :-(

According to the Elecraft product description,

Replacing the full-size K3/0
http://www.elecraft.com/K3-Remote/k3-remote-legacy.htm, the
K3/0-Mini consists of a K3 front panel, only, so it's highly portable.
The K3/0-Mini is perfect for home and travel use due to its small
size. It fully duplicates all K3 controls, displays and menus for a
realistic remote K3 experience.

Given that it fully duplicates the menus, you should be able to go to
the main menu, choose LCD ADJ, and set the display viewing angle over a
wide range. For the K3 on a shelf, a value of 20 is good for eye-level
viewing (straight on). Higher numbered values (up to 100) make viewing
good with the rig tilted up, but I don't know if the range is wide
enough to handle the unit laying flat. Worth a try.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Sudden Hi-SWR on low end of 40M

2013-02-19 Thread Augie (Gus) Hansen
There are two errors in my previous posting regarding the RCS-4 remote
antenna switch.

1) The default (off, no power) antenna position is ANT4. The ANT1
position is the one that is activated by the AC control voltage.

2) I mistyped the RFC/choke value. The value of the RFC in the remote
switch box measured with an AADE L/C Meter IIB is 70uH in circuit. It is
probably the same as the RFC in the control box that measures ~100uH.

Also note that the current version being sold by MFJ/Ameritron uses the
three-relay circuit with a modified layout of the connectors, which I
assume is to minimize any impedance bumps.

The two-relay version I mentioned in the previous post has provision for
jumpers that ground the unselected ANTx connector center conductors.
Neither of the three-relay version support this feature.

The amp that Don mentioned is the SGC SmartPowerCube, which is a

The SG-500 works very well on SSB as well as digital modes, but it
was not designed for full break-in CW. I had toyed with the idea of
modifying the keying circuit for QSK by using fast vacuum relay

Works with any transceiver. The RS232 interface is for f/w updates

If so, do I position it before or after the tuner?

Depends on whether you are using a rig's internal tuner or something
external. In my station the W2 is installed between the KPA500

The K3's KAT3 is bypassed in this arrangement.

I had a similar failure with an Astron 18 amp supply. It would work

was a wire connected to the circuit board that was making mechanical

 1. practically speaking, apart from huge traditional wire antenna, are there
any other antennas of managable size (also reasonable efficiency) which can be
easily set up under distress situation?

I built a magnetic loop that covers the range of 160-80 meters. It
consists of three turns of 7/8 hard line as the loop conductor and
a remotely controlled vacuum variable capacitor for tuning. The
antenna is just a tad over six feet in diameter. It can be tuned
down to about 1.5 MHz with a 500 pF vacuum variable. With a longer
loop conductor (either more turns or larger antenna diameter) and a
1000 pF VVC, such an antenna could get down to the 600 meter band.
The instantaneous bandwidth is quite narrow (~2 kHz), suitable for
CW and data modes, but not SSB.

2.to make communciations of say within 200-300km, what ERP is required?

I have worked all over North America from Colorado (~2000 mile
range) with this antenna running only 100 watts during several
contests, and daytime regional coverage is typically out to about
200 miles using 500 watts. The antenna hangs from a tree branch with
the bottom of the loop about 8 feet above ground.

3.for a segment of 15Khz, voice communciation seems quite restrictive.
 How
efficent will it be under digital mode (not CW) such as Pactor?

The three-turn mag loop typically has a 10-15% transmitting
efficiency at the low end of its tuning range if it is built well,
and the nulls along the loop axis help in reducing at least one
noise source, providing acceptable S+N/N performance on receive.

The VVC is in the box at the top along with the motor and limit

above the bottom of the structural PVC frame. That box separates the
DC motor-control voltage from the RF, passing the RF through a
capacitor to the small driver loop. The DC goes up a twisted pair
cable inside the vertical PVC support tube. The VVC handles up to 15
KV at up to 65 amps.

I hope this helps,

Is there an Elecraft mailto address for corrections and suggestions

minimize clutter on this reflector.

An example correction to the P3 Owner's Manual is to the botched last

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net summary, Sunday, 1 Aug 2010

2010-08-01 Thread Augie Gus Hansen
The Elecraft SSB Net held today, Sunday 1 August 2010, had 23

I have two deep cycle batteries kept topped off by about 60 watts of

During Field Day operation and longer contest periods at 100 watts, 50%

fully charged condition. In intermittent service (2-3 hours daily) the
battery easily lasts for more than a week, often two before requiring a

 From the K3 spec:

I routinely run the K3 on battery as note in my previous post and the
voltage averages 12-12.5V and falls below 12V only during contests. The
BAT MIN setting remains at the default of 11V, which was reached only

Nothing heard over a full year. Since I still couldn't hear anything I

You might try turning the dipole into a vertical position and working
some local 6m ops on 50.125MHz, which is the de facto calling frequency.
If you're putting out any signal at all a few pleas for assistance with
a radio check in your area will likely result in some helpful replies.

Anything I could have screwed up on the rig to make 6m a dead band? No
problems noted on any other band.

Have you verified that you have the correct antenna selected? Or is
there a low-pass filter in line that is putting an 80 dB stopband above
42 MHz or some other cutoff frequency below the 6m band?

By the way, 6m has been open quite often during this peak season, which
typically runs May through July. In fact, right now (1527Z) the band is
well open between Europe and eastern USA.

There may be other K2 owners who had a similar circumstance. If so, I'm

Jesse,

To use a PC for sending code practice you will need an electronic

an on/off signal that drives an oscillator at a pitch and volume that is
pleasing to your ear. When I was writing Learn C Now for Microsoft, I
wrote a C program that used two pins on a parallel port for the keying
input and some sound routines to generate the tone. It worked, but
didn't make the cut due to space limitations and concerns that it was
too geeky for the intended audience. I can't lay hands on it now -- lost
to the dust-bin of history.

However, you are very close to having what you need with the K2. Forge
ahead with Part 3 and you will be able to use the K2's built-in
electronic keyer for practice.

   1) Set up the keying input for paddles:
Tap MENU and select INP by rotating the tuning knob.
Press and hold MENU to get into EDIT mode and select PDLN
(normal) or PDLR (reverse).

Tap MENU twice to get back to normal operation.

   2) Then with the rig in CW mode, activate the TEST mode by pressing
and holding the MODE button.

When you want to get on the air for real, press and hold MODE again to
return to OPERate mode.

If the default sidetone pitch and volume aren't right for you adjust
those parameters using MENU/EDIT actions for ST L and ST P settings.

The K2 is the only current production HF transceiver that I know of that has

In an SO2R or other multi-station contest environment (or if you have a big

change this setting in CW mode by using the VOX button. If it is in TEST

RE: [Elecraft] K2 - VOX - Straw Poll

2004-08-12 Thread Augie (Gus) Hansen
I am asking for feedback from SSB operators on VOX operation on the K2.

 a) Do you use VOX ?
Yes, about 95% of the time when running SSB. The microphone I use is a
homebrew boom-set that has an electret element. It has plenty of output and
triggers the VOX quickly and reliably.

I would very much like the K2 to have a dedicated vox on/off control. Having
to cycle through the menu, especially on a hold type button, is a pain. It
is hard to eliminate a sneeze or other sounds not intended for transmission.

 b) If not, why not ?
I turn VOX off if I'm operating in a noisy environment, such as portable
operations when the planes from a nearby airport are taking off in my
direction.
