Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 fault
Hi Steve, When plugging in the large 50V power cables between the power supply and rf deck, make sure they are pushed in firmly with -two- distinct insertion clicks. After feeling the first click, push them in further for the second click. We are finding some customers mistakenly think they are fully inserted after just the first click, which can lead to intermittent 50 V to the amp. If you still have problems after checking this, please contact supp...@elecraft.com so we can help you resolve it. 73, Eric elecraft.com _..._ > On Jun 3, 2018, at 6:09 AM, Steve wrote: > > Turned on #121 tonight. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Fan Noise
One quick note: We have shifted up the fan turn on temperatures by about 7 degrees for Fan speed 2 and above in our next KPA1500 s/w release and on newly shipping amps. The release should be available in the next week or two. As noted by others, setting the minimum RF deck fan speed to 1 (or 2 if desired) also further delays going to higher fan speeds in TX. Also, since the RF deck is instant on, its OK to turn it off from the front panel when you are mostly listening and tuning the band. (The amp can also be set to power up in operate mode in its menu..) There are no limitations to turning it on and off frequently. (Of course we recommend letting it cool first before turning it off temporarily when running higher duty TX cycles.) 73, Eric elecraft.com _..._ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Hi Knut, Because it relates to problems using our utility software his posting is certainly pertinent here. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500
Hi Bill, We ship the RF deck and Power Supply in two individual inner boxes that are then packed with special foam corner inserts into a larger outside shipping box. The foam inserts, air gap and the outer box provide the extra protection needed for shipping via UPS etc. We lose that protection if we ship it using just the two inner boxes on their own. The easiest thing I would suggest is to simply open the top of the outer box upon receipt and then easily remove the lighter two inner boxes separately to move it. They lift out very easily. In my case, the battery not only was overcharged, but the UPS died in such a fashion that the 117 AC was interrupted several times and that killed my computer, which it was supposed to protect. I know the house current did not flicker or drop during the time. It was strictly the UPS. I have replaced it with a modern unit that has a selectable "float voltage" for several types of backup batteries. In my case I selected a 100AH deep cycle AGM construction unit. If the house supply goes down, it switches to a 60 Hz inverter (pure sine wave) in 10 ms. It has a monitor panel that shows me the condition of the battery. Nothing is fool proof. But I hope that this more modern design can help me avoid this sort of catastrophe in the future. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 on AM
Agreed. AM with carrier set properly to 25% of peak power (1500 * 0.25 = 375 W max carrier ) is no strain for the 1500. With the normal variations of the AM speech envelope between the 235 W carrier and the peaks at 1500W, the amp is loafing along at any key down time. :-) Eric /elecraft.com/ On 2/15/2018 3:27 AM, Richard Lamont wrote: On 15/02/18 11:12, Bill wrote: How well will the KPA1500 do on AM during very long-winded QSOs? (The number of orders in even the first 30 minutes was amazing..) Here's a copy of what is currently posted on the shipping status page: *(Feb 6, 2018) KPA1500s are now Shipping!* KPA1500s have now started shipping against our backlog (we started several days ago). Yay! :-) Its been a lot of hard work getting it released and rolling, but we are all excited to see KPA1500s burning in on the test racks and heading out the door! The first several weeks of production will ramp ramp up slowly, with the production rate speeding up after that. Email and/or phone notifications will be sent each week to customers whose KPA1500 will be shipped within that week. We are now beginning to ship orders from August 24th, the first day we began taking orders. Due to very large rush of orders we received that day, we expect to be shipping the Aug. 24 orders over the next 3-4 weeks. Please note that KPA1500 orders were received by the website, emails, mail, trade shows and phone calls, so order numbers will not indicate exactly where you are in the delivery queue. We also received a very large number of KPA1500 orders daily during the first several weeks, so orders with the same order date will ship spread over a large number of days. Those included building things, learning morse code, and developing a better understanding. So, I sold all the appliances and bought a K1 kit! It was a wonderful build, and I really loved adjusting the VFO by adjusting wire spacing on L1. So much fun! Of course, to use it I had to learn morse code, so I did. I am disappointed that there have not been any new solder kits from Elecraft and probably never will be again, though I understand the economics, the problems with parts availability, and soldering surface mount components. Folks - I've just corresponded with Howard Hoyt, W4SPC, of Pro-Audio Systems. It appears you may be mistaken about the assertion Howard was the moderator banning people from the independent Yahoo KX3 list. Howard took over the Yahoo KX3/KX2 list a while back from its original owner, who apparently -was- banning a large number of members for a wide range of reasons. Howard's goal was to clean up the problems. In fact Howard has been adding back a large number of members who were previously banned when informed about it. This is -exactly- the reason why we prohibit complaints about other vendors or hams on this list. And even when well intentioned, an erroneous complaint about a vendor or person can seriously harm their reputation and business. I'll invite Howard top post here so he can set the story straight. Re: [Elecraft] Dayton Dropoff
Hi Alan, I apologize, but we are unable to receive products for service at the show. In addition to the chance for loss or damage to your radio there in the commotion of the show, we're maxed out just keeping up with the regular show sales and demos. We are also limited in what we can hand carry back with us on the plane to CA. Also, anyone planning a service return needs to first contact our sales or support group and have them issue you a 'return service authorization' (RSA) form and number along with shipping info to the factory etc. That's the only way we can guarantee that we will be able receive it properly to track it, handle it properly, get it completed quickly and back to you. (I apologize if you have already done that step :-) If you are hand carrying it with you from the U.K., one solution might be to post it via UPS to us from a local UPS store' in Dayton. There are a number of these there and also in some of the local office supply stores. Of course, make sure to contact us first to get the RSA form and number. 73, Eric /elecraft.com/ On 5/15/2017 10:18 AM, G4GNX wrote: Almost certainly not. That is specifically prohibited on our Elecraft email list guidelines. 1. It is a violation of list guidelines to complain about a non-elecraft vendor, even if your post is well intentioned. 2. [Elecraft] Elecraft email List Official Guidelines 2017
Eric /elecraft.com/ Elecraft eMail LIST GUIDELINES 2017 For those of you who are new to the list, (and for those of us who have rapidly failing memories) here is a quick list of things to remember when posting to this list. Please save this for future reference. The most important thing to remember is that this is a hobby - Let's have fun! The PRIMARY purposes of this list are to provide a -polite- and enjoyable forum for discussing Elecraft products, share mods, new ideas, feedback to Elecraft, share experiences using our products, troubleshooting ideas etc. The Elecraft email list server (reflector) is provided primarily to further the discussion of Elecraft products and related items. It serves as a forum for the discussion of both technical and operating topics including product features, construction and debug problems, sharing your enthusiasm and impressions from using our products and on a limited basis, more general ham radio related topics of interest to our customers. (Please -strongly- resist the urge to reply to an OT topic once it has gone to 5 posts. Once it hits ten posts do not reply at all (go off list if you feel the urge to continue.) Also, please do not try to always get the 'last word'.. 1. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to the [Elecraft] list TO POST to it. (This is done to stop advertising spammers from hitting the list.) Any postings sent to elecraft@mailman.qth.net by addresses different from the exact ones it shows as subscribers will be rejected. This includes alias (forwarded) addresses like w1...@arrl.net. If you use an alias to subscribe you must have it as your from: and return address too. Subscribing with w...@arrl.net from your physical address of j...@aol.com will allow you to receive postings, but your postings to the list will be rejected if their from: and reply to: address does not match your subscribe address.. Go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to subscribe and to change your list preferences. To unsubscribe or to change your list preferences (digest, no mail on/off etc.), scroll to the bottom of the page and log in with your subscribed email address and the password that was sent to you by email when you subscribed (and sent to you each month). 2. If you want to provide an attachment, .JPG picture or other large file for use on the list, first post it to your personal web page and then post a link to its address in an email to the list. The list strips all attachments to prevent viruses from propagating and to keep the archives at a reasonable size. 3. Top posting is the official standard for this list, and its especially important for those of us who also read our email on smartphones, iPads etc. Scrolling though a long thread before getting to the reply text is difficult on these devices and costs everyone a lot of time. Reading the response first, at the top, is a huge time saver, especially when you have to read hundreds of emails daily as we do here. We really appreciate your adherence to this. Please also delete -all- footers and as much of the prior email text as possible when replying to cut down on overall email size. Please keep the amount of copied text from previous posts to an -ABSOLUTE MINIMUM- in your replies. 4. EMAIL OVERLOAD: If you are overloaded by the volume of individual messages on the list, You can view the daily Elecraft list messages for each month in web format at: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . These archives are updated hourly and list postings by subject. (the Nabble archive looks very useful.) Just click on the ones you are interested in to read. You can also set your Elecraft list email preferences to 'no mail' delivery, which still allows you to post to the list when reading via the digest. You can also change your subscription to the DIGEST version, which sends you a single compilation each day. To change your email list options or to subscribe / unsubscribe, go to: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Scroll to the bottom of the page to log into your preferences page and set your mail options to 'no mail'. 4a. Please make an effort to keep list volume under control by resisting the urge to post a comment on every long discussion thread (CW, Soldering etc.) With thousands of list subscribers volume can quickly get out of control if everyone feels the need to comment. While we do not overly restrict the subject matter on this list, please remember that its primary focus is on Elecraft products, and their use. Many people rely on it for pointers on building, using and troubleshooting their rigs. Other ham Radio topics are OK, but please keep the posts on non-Elecraft topics under control. 4b. *** When emailing about a specific rig or option, please add the rig/option name(s) to the first part of your email subject line. (K1, K2, K3, KX1 etc.) This will be a huge help for those experiencing email overload and will
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Equipment chat group
I'd like to close this thread at this time to reduce email overload for our other readers. As the central Elecraft community discussion forum, we rely on this list both to post official Elecraft updates and to get motivational feedback, marketing and technical info from all of you. Its a huge resource for us, and of course, for all of you. Regarding other discussion forums: There already are at least three unofficial Elecraft related Yahoo discussion Groups in existence. One, just called 'Elecraft' is a very low volume general discussion area for anything Elecraft related. It receives just a few posts each week. (I actually manage that one since it was released by its creator many years ago. I am not able to regularly read or post to it though.) There also is an Elecraft K3 Yahoo list that gets a few more posts, and a reasonably active Elecraft KX3 yahoo group. We try to watch those, but we are not able to do so nearly as often as we watch and participate here. Note also that there is an official Elecraft Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/Elecraft.Inc In general, we prefer that this list remain as the central daily Elecraft discussion forum. We certainly acknowledge that there will be other new Elecraft lists popping up from time to time, but we can not guarantee that we will always be able to read and respond on those lists regularly. Also, please limit OT non-Elecraft product related postings here as much as possible, and to voluntarily stop replying to, and kill, those OT threads after less than 10 on-list replies (preferably less then 5.. :-) I'll post the formal list user guidelines in a moment. 73, Eric Moderator /elecraft.com/ On 5/1/2017 9:12 AM, David Gilbert wrote: Not at all interested. Re: [Elecraft] account suspension
Gentlemen, it is very unlikely the qth list server was hacked. What we almost always see is that one or more indivudual list subscribers are hacked and their computers in turn send out these phishing emails to the list addresses in their email address books. I see these across the board on a regular basis from a wide range of lists and individual sources. The elecraft list does require the sender address to actually be subscribed with that address to post to the list. We see a wide range of spam, phishing etc. from non-list senders in our list spam folder each day. Note that is is quite easy for anyone to use any email address as their 'sender' address in an email, I can do it here in less than 60 seconds, so its not surprising some of these slip through from time to time. In general, do not ever click on links in an email. If you think an email requesting info is legitimate, independently go to the web site for the business in question (not the one the email points to..) and then log in normally and check out if there is are any notices etc. Let's close this thread now before it takes up more room than the initial spam that made it through. :-) 73, Eric /elecraft.com/ On 3/7/2017 10:52 AM, Mike Rhodes wrote: RUN, don't walk the other way. Re: [Elecraft] RX Mush, why the fuss?
This has been an interesting discussion. We've certainly passed the posting overload limit on it though, so lets wind it down in the next hour to let others recuperate from email overload ;-) 73, Eric List mooderator.. /elecraft.com/ On 3/3/2017 10:59 AM, David Gilbert wrote: I agree with your comments. Re: [Elecraft] Product Idea - 25 Watt PA for the K3
That is correct. While typically in the 25-35 W range, It can require up to the low 40 W range in some cases. As a result, the KPA3, KAT3, Bandpass filters for general coverage, 2nd receiver, DVR, extra roofing filters are optional. For instance, those who want a transceiver only to drive VHF/UHF transceivers do not want to buy the 100 watt PA, nor the KAT3. Those who operate only QRP levels can pay for a K3S without the KPA3. Certainly, it makes customizing your order a bit more involved, but you end up with a transceiver that is tailored to your needs and operating preferences. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2017 9:32 AM, j...@kk9a.com wrote: I am a little late to the Elecraft party, why does this transceiver use a separate 100 watt module instead of just having a 100 to 200 watt transmitter like other manufactures? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to j...@jtmiller.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to eric.swa...@elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Quick Way To Accurately Measure K3s CW Filter Offset?
Also make sure your sidetone pitch setting is where you like it. Eric /elecraft.com/ On 2/18/2017 9:00 AM, Nr4c wrote: The 409 is zero. Are the passband centered on display? Sent from my iPhone ...nr4c. bill On Feb 18, 2017, at 3:30 AM, Dave AD6Awrote: Hi Folks, I'm having a go at my first CW contest for many years (and boy, am I rusty!!). I've worked several new countries already, BUT, I noticed my K3s main and sub receivers' 400Hz and 200Hz CW filter offsets are all quite a bit off (even though I put the offsets in that were written on the filters), causing me to tune the stations in at a lower than optimal tone (in order to hear them properly) and trying to put in an XIT offset so they can hear me in their tight RX passband. So far, it's not working that well. At a rough guess, I'd say they were about 200 to 300Hz low of where I need them to be (600Hz tone is my chosen optimal listening frequency). So, my question is, is there a simple way to accurately determine what the frequency offset of each filter is without having to open the rig up and dive in with test equipment? I'm guessing it could be something like: a.Tune in a strong-ish CW station or carrier to exactly 600Hz audio (use the tone mon to compare with the 600Hz reference audibly) b.Note the VFO frequency (on FINE) c.Use the RIT function to tune the station/carrier in to the peak of the crystal filter d.Note the offset e.Apply the offset to the crystal filter bank What do you think of this procedure? Got a better/quicker one? Any/all input most gratefully accepted.
