Re: [Elecraft] stereo channel output balance

2014-03-25 Thread Gary Hinson
I've had a distinct channel imbalance problem developing slowly, I suspect,
for about a year or more on my K3. I discovered very recently that it is
being caused, or substantially worsened at least, by the AFX audio effects
function. I am almost entirely using CW through headphones, listening to
just the main receiver with the subRX off about 50% of the time and the rest
listening to pileups. With the AFX on, there is a marked bias towards my
left ear. With AFX off, the audio is more or less central. I've messed
around with the AFX delay setting but it doesn't seem to make much
difference: at all settings, the marked left bias exists. I haven't put it
on a scope or soundcard meter yet.

[I occasionally have another audio problem with what sounds like a high tone
intermod product caused by over-driving something in the audio chain. If
so, it seems to be ahead of the volume knob since that makes no difference.
The problem is intermittent - lasts for a week or two then goes away for
months, and is annoying but not bad enough to ruin the receiver. I don't
know if it is related.]

Any ideas what's going on?

Is there any way to control the balance on the output coming from the spkr

side sounds louder that the other. When I swap speaker wires the other
channel gets louder so I am hoping there is a way to even the stereo balance

Re: [Elecraft] Portable antnennas

2014-01-13 Thread Gary Hinson
How about making a homebrew multiband vertical for $not very much at all,
one that will literally fit in your pocket?

Use a steel tape measure as the vertical radiator, with the body of the
measure lofted into the sky using a very low tech bit of string hanging
over the branch of a tree. Run out a few radials on the ground beneath, and
feed with a short run of coax to your Elecraft exciter. Pull or slacken the
string to adjust the length and get it to resonate and radiate on whichever
band you are using (you may be lucky if the body of the measure is heavy
enough to reel itself down when you release the string, but a safer method
uses a complete loop of string over the support, attached to the tape
measure body, so you can pull it either way).

A 10m tape measure will do for 7MHz and up, provided you can find a sky hook
at least 10m up (palm trees in the tropics are about 15m high, I guess). If
your tape is only 8m long (most are, here in NZ), simply add an extension -
a couple of metres of wire on the free end of the tape - and connect that to
your coax. For 80m, if you have a 20m sky hook, you can extend the radiator
by adding another 10m of wire on the bottom end, or simply use the length of
wire as an inverted-L over whatever skyhook you can muster, the higher the
better.

Spring steel is not an ideal conductor but it's good enough, especially as
you will have /P and perhaps an exotic prefix for gain!

I think of this as the poor man's Steppir vertical. If the aforementioned
palm tree is dangling over the sea on a tropical island, your $negligible
investment will amaze you.

There's a paper describing a slightly more sophisticated version on the web
- Google Fat Max antenna (Fat Max being the brand name of the tape measure
he used).

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB PTT Switch

2013-12-14 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Bryan.

The best footswitches I have found have been either electric sewing machine
or Dictaphone (audio transcription) foot controllers, picked up for
$next-to-nothing in junk shops (or ask a sewing machine repair shop for a
cast-off). They are solidly built, the size of a paperback book, and heavy,
with long-life well made switch contacts. They completely outclass the
crappy little lightweight ones sold new into the ham market.

They work equally well with other, lesser, radios and headsets, and not just
on SSB either :-)

Tip: fit a 1/4 mono plus AND a phono plug on the cable, in parallel, to be
able to use the switch with radios or amps that have either type of socket.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 -Advice: how to configure APF for least ringing

2013-05-11 Thread Gary Hinson
I use APF only as a last resort, Robert. It can sometimes help me dig out
and record very weak 10m beacons under QRM from adjacent beacons, with CW
filters on turbo, sometimes also using the manual notch filter to try to
kill the worst QRM. It takes time to peak the desired signal precisely on
the nose of the APF, using the fine tuning setting, the CWT function and
watching audio levels with the audio recording software (Audacity in my
case). Beacons transmit continuously so there is no mad rush to get it set
up. For regular DX QSOs, it's not worth the bother in my opinion, but as I
recall the APF facility was introduced in response to requests from 160m
DXers desperate to glean the faintest sniff of RF from the ionosphere.

It does indeed ring. There is probably a physics lecturer desperate to tell
us that ringing is an inevitable consequence of the very tight filtering,
plus artifacts from the digital processing I guess. Ringing gets worse with
fast CW but beacons tend to send quite slowly.

2013-03-07 Thread Gary Hinson
My name's Gary and I'm a DXer.

I can't recall accidentally LINKing VFOs for a good year or more, not since
I started using macros to drop into and out of split mode, set up the audio
and filters etc.

Couldn't the issue of DXpeditioners accidentally LINKing VFOs, or perhaps
tuning the wrong VFO or nudging the knob, be solved simply by them locking
their transmit VFO?

FWIW I vote to fix other longstanding firmware bugs rather than fiddle with
LINK, e.g.:
- The CW/PTT sequencing glitch that sometimes screws up my CW if I release
the PTT while still sending;
- CW-in-SSB function producing no output but appearing to key the K3,
sometimes (QSK+ related if I recall correctly);
- The power surge that happens if I trigger the previous bug, then change to
CW mode and hit the key (this one trips the KPA500 alarm and makes me say
ouch!)

CW-in-DATA-A could be useful too, in order to send a brief CW message to
someone at the end of a RTTY or PSK QSO, or send QRZ, QRL or WRONG
SIDEBAND or whatever.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 'REPEAT' display when using SUB rx

2013-02-27 Thread Gary Hinson
I understand what you're saying, Rich, and it makes sense, but personally I
use N1MM's CQ repeat function instead of the K3's. In N1MM, I know the key
combinations to turn repeat on/off, change the repeat period, and cancel
sending from the keyboard: I'd struggle to do those things on the K3 in a
full-on contest, with sleep deprivation and advancing years.

If it's an easy firmware change, I'd be happy to see the K3 denote repeat
mode in a different way, although there are only so many ways given the LCD
segments and LEDs available. Perhaps a flashing R in the first/most
significant digit of the VFO-B frequency display (alternating slowly with
the frequency digit so it can still be read) would work?

In contests, I often call CQ in the REPEAT mode (Hold the M1-4 key for the
memory with the CQ in it). I tune the SUB receiver VFO up or down the band
to a different frequency, getting ready to search for new multipliers
after the
CQ ends. On 160 meters at Multi-Multi op station W3LPL, between sending
repeated CQ's, I often want to quickly move the SUB receiver to the
frequency of a DX Custer spot to check it out. The problem is that the way
the K3 firmware is presently written, there is no way of knowing the
frequency of the SUB receiver while a CQ is being sent in the REPEAT mode.
The LCD readout displays REPEAT while the repeated CQ is being sent.

It would be better if the REPEAT message displayed on the LCD screen was
replaced with the SUB receiver frequency while VFO-B is being tuned. A
slight delay in re-displaying 'REPEAT' could be added after the VFO-B
tuning
 stops.

Is it only me, or are there other K3 (w/SUB receiver) contest ops who
would
 like this firmware change?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: SP 2 switches back to SP 1 during RX in Split

2013-02-24 Thread Gary Hinson
I've had something similar. The cause on my K3 (SN 2887) appears to be some
sort of intermittent problem in the current-sensing circuit. The K3
presumably detects excess current, assumes it is the stereo audio chip being
shorted by a mono speaker (it isn't!), and switches itself to mono to
protect the chip.

Watch the K3's current meter: at times, mine varies wildly between 1 and N
amps where N is 'several', on receive, doing nothing much at all. Right
now, my K3 is reading a stable 1.10 amps.

The last time this issue happened to me was about 6 months ago. The actual
current draw from the supply was stable but the K3's meter was kicking
around, occasionally tripping the protection circuit. It cleared up by
itself for no obvious reason. I've had it a couple of times before that
too. I wonder if it might be a dry joint in that area or a dodgy
current-sensing chip.

I guess this could be done in software these days. It is possible to feed
left and right channels to two separate RTTY decoder instances and
interpolate the decodes by eye at the level of the decoded text, but I'd
have thought some cunning software ought to do a better job of
comparing/combining signals using their strengths, SNR or some other quality
measure, bit-by-bit. Or something.

Classically, in ye olde days of mechanical printers, diversity combing was
done
post detection in the modem. Two receivers feeding two modems, and the
detector outputs of the two modems were combined with a switching device
that selected the output with the best SNR.

With CW, the operator's wet-ware can separate the two channels and
perform a version of best channel selection.

I was concerned that bridging the two audio channels in this way would

Re: [Elecraft] Adapter to use KXUSB with the KPA500

2013-02-18 Thread Gary Hinson
Something vaguely similar to this, perhaps:
www.G4iFB.com/W2_programming_lead.jpg

I appear to have misplaced the Elecraft-supplied serial programming lead for
my W2 wattmeter - no big deal until I came to change the SWR alarm settings.
So I made one up from junk-box bits.

All I need to do now is attach a big fluorescent sign that reads Not junk!

I have just completed the firmware upgrade on the KAT500 and found it a
breeze with the supplied KXUSB cable.
It got me wondering why nobody has come up with an adapter (so it could be
used with the KPA500) by mounting a 3.5mm stereo socket in the back of the
9 pin serial connector and wiring the appropriate connections. Is this
 possible?
I'm fairly sure if the KPA500 was on the drawing board right now it would
have the 3.5mm computer interface socket the same as the KAT500.

[Elecraft] K3: Unstable current voltage on RX

2012-07-30 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi guys.

Any idea what would be causing the K3's built-in ammeter to constantly
fluctuate around 1-3A, and the voltmeter to constantly fluctuate between
13.3 and 14.0V on receive?

I occasionally notice HI CURR warnings, and the rig resets itself from
SPKRS=2 to SPKRS=1.

The PSU itself is fine - stable at 13.77V (measured at the PSU end) on
receive, dropping to 13.13V when transmitting a 100W carrier.

While checking the readings for this email I noticed that the ammeter
stabilized at 1.07A for about a minute after I've transmitted at 100W for a
few seconds, before going back to the 1-4A fluctuations. I wonder if this
might be related to the PA pin corrosion problems reported on some K3s?
Mine is S/N 2887.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issues

2012-06-09 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Kent.

It could be an RFI issue but it could also be a faulty connection somewhere
that won't pass enough current for high power.

Do the KPS's SWR LEDs light up like a Christmas tree when you operate
barefoot at about 100W with the KPA in standby? If so, you clearly have a
problem with your antenna or feed.

With the KPA in operate mode, watch those SWR LEDs as you gradually increase
the drive from 5 to 25W: if it seems OK at the low end but suddenly flashes
the oranges/reds and faults out, I'd suspect a dodgy connector, most likely
one outside that has corroded or loosened.

Using Logger32 (and probably others - I'm pretty sure N1MM does this too), I
just type the frequency into the callsign entry field, hit return, and the

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Assembly Question

2012-03-19 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Dave.

I can't say for sure but the original screws for the plate were a fraction
too long, causing pops when the PA heated up due to thermal expansion.
Some of us simply filed a fraction off the original screws to seat the plate
more tightly, and that solved out problem. In other words, slightly short
screws are better.

4-to-5 threads sounds to me like it ought to work OK, so I'd settle for that
... but like you I'd be a bit concerned about the inventory of parts, just
in case those screws are destined to be used elsewhere. Are you sure there
are no other screws in a little additional envelope somewhere?

the
manual is incorrect.  Up to this point she has been spot on.

Could this be an error where they really meant to use 3/16?  I tried

 Suggestions?

[Elecraft] RQRE: K3: CW in SSB mode broken?

2012-02-08 Thread Gary Hinson
I concur Frank.

I have QRQ turned on 'permanently' and use QSK a lot, which I guess could be
the reason CW-in-SSB is mostly broken for me (and you I guess) but not for
everyone.

I just checked as you suggested: in sequence ...
1. I had been using CW on 30m. Changing the rig to SSB mode and hitting
the paddle gave the sidetone and triggered the PTT line but produced no RF
out i.e. CW-in-SSB was broken.
2. Power-cycling the rig made no difference. It's still broken.
3. Turning QRQ off in the menu made no difference. It's still broken.
4. Power cycling the rig (with QRQ still configured off) restored
CW-in-SSB. It works! I fixed it!
5. Turning QRQ back on made no difference. It still works!
6. Power cycling the rig (this time with QRQ configured on) broke it again.

So it seems I can reliably break and fix CW-in-SSB depending on whether QRQ
is on or off then I power-cycle the rig ... BUT ... there is ALSO some
dependency with the band and mode the rig is in when it is power cycled.

On 6m, power cycling the rig with QRQ on does not break CW-in-SSB.
On 10m, power cycling the rig with QRQ on DOES break CW-in-SSB. Power
cycling with QRQ off fixes it.
On 12m, power cycling the rig with QRQ on DOES break CW-in-SSB. Power
cycling with QRQ off partially fixed it i.e. the first dit gave power out
but then it broke.
On 15m, same as 10m.
On 17m, same as 10m.
On 20m, same as 10m.
On 30m, same as 10m.
On 40m, same as 10m.
On 80m, same as 10m.
On 160m, same as 10m.

Those results on both 6m and 12m are interesting. The 6m result is
repeatable (which means *provided* I *always* remember to QSY to 6m before I
switch off the K3 at night, CW-in-SSB will still work in the morning!) but I
cannot reproduce that 12m result where it sent just one dit before breaking.
How odd! Now 12m behaves like 10m.

I though I would also check whether it matters how I turn QRQ on/off. All
the testing above was done using the CW QRQ option on the menu to toggle it,
but in CW mode with QRQ configured ON, QRQ can also be toggled on/off by
hitting RIT or XIT. Now I discovered that on 30m, power cycling with QRQ on
while the rig is in CW mode does NOT break CW-in-SSB, but power cycling with
the rig while it is in SSB mode DOES break CW-in-SSB. So again, *provided*
I *always* remember to turn the to rig to CW (or I suspect any mode other
than SSB - it's fine in data mode, I haven't tested the others) before I
switch off the K3 at night, it looks like CW-in-SSB will still work in the
morning!

Yet another finding: I can toggle QRQ off/on/off/on repeatedly using the
RIT/XIT button in CW mode. But if I power cycle the rig while QRQ is
configured on but toggled off with RIT/XIT (let's call that QRQ
suspended), it will no longer toggle back on with RIT/XIT after the K3
restarts. In other words, the rig 'forgets' that it was in the QRQ
suspended mode. The rig does 'remember' the setting of RIT/XIT after a
power cycle but the RIT/XIT frequency offset is cancelled back to 0.

 Hi Gary, group, Elecraft support,

I think I have found a strong correlation between CW in SSB not working
and
 the QRQ setting. Here follows:

To make CW in SSB work: set CONFIG:QRQ to OFF, power-cycle the K3.

To break CW in SSB: set CONFIG:QRQ to ON, power-cycle the K3.

I have the same problem: CW in SSB no longer works on K3#2887 running

went around the loop changing config settings, PTT, QRQ etc. I did
manage to fix it temporarily by restoring the K3 firmware configs, but
annoyingly it has packed up again since then.

I *think* CW-in-SSB it might still work on some bands, not others. At
 least, that's what I found last time I checked - I haven't checked
lately.

I suspect there might be a cryptic bug in the firmware (the best kind!).

Re: [Elecraft] Any need for the handle?

2012-02-07 Thread Gary Hinson
You can tell that your K3's handle has the Elecraft Mojo Core if it has a
slight curve in it, due to being hand-carried through airports and ports to
some exotic DX QTH, where the Core gets downloaded over the air from other
Elecrafties in the pileups, using the Elecraft Mojo Transfer Protocol
(EMTP).

Even if you only operate at home, provided you work enough exotic DX with
your Elecraft gear, the Core will eventually accumulate in the handle from
all the pileups and DX QSOs and gradually a gentle curve will set in. If
your K3 has a flat handle, you are evidently not working enough DX. Taking
the rig to somewhere such as Wake Island or Peter I will speed up the mojo
transfer and the curvature process dramatically.

I don't know of any documented need for the handle, but I suspect there
may be a secret Elecraft Mojo Core module installed in the middle of it.
If
you find that you're not making it through the pile-ups before your

[Elecraft] FW: K3: CW in SSB mode broken?

2012-02-01 Thread Gary Hinson
Resent as the original didn't appear - sri if this is a dupe

Mmm, interesting.

Prompted by other comments, I tested CW-in-SSB band-by-band. Starting at
10m and working systematically down to 160m, the K3 would go into transmit
mode but produce no power out on any band. However, after moving 'down'
from 160m to 6m, it mysteriously started working again - and now works
correctly on every band.

So, it seems that merely by changing bands and hitting the paddle, I have
cleared whatever it was that blocked the transmitter in CW-in-SSB. How odd!

Frank (or anyone else whose CW-in-SSB doesn't work): perhaps you would try
the same thing?

It still smells of a firmware bug to me.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: CW in SSB mode broken?

2012-01-31 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Frank.

I have the same problem: CW in SSB no longer works on K3#2887 running
firmware 4.39. I raised this on the reflector some months back and went
around the loop changing config settings, PTT, QRQ etc. I did manage to fix
it temporarily by restoring the K3 firmware configs, but annoyingly it has
packed up again since then.

I *think* CW-in-SSB it might still work on some bands, not others. At
least, that's what I found last time I checked - I haven't checked lately.

I suspect there might be a cryptic bug in the firmware (the best kind!).

Re: [Elecraft] [W2] Waterproofing the sensor

2012-01-28 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi David.

I haven't waterproofed the sensor head but I did experiment with a ~30m long
Ethernet cable to see whether I could locate a second sensor at my remote
antenna switch plus the one near the rig, to check the feeder loss. It
didn't work out. Looking at the schematics, I think there are resistors in
the lines inside the sensor box that might be worth bypassing to see if I
can get enough signal back for a realistic reading, but I ran out of play
time before being able to try that.

Re: [Elecraft] Use of K3 voice keyer

Hi George.

Sounds to me like you are using VOX, and it is too sensitive. Try turning
VOX off (e.g. press a PTT footswitch when you want to transmit live audio -
the voice keyer automagically asserts PTT when triggered for the duration of
the message) or at least turning down the VOX sensitivity.

Mine pops or clicks too.

In my case, it sounds like a relay switching. I thought at first it was

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Heat Expansion Pop

2011-12-08 Thread Gary Hinson
RR

The amp was totally silent for the first few weeks of its life. The clicks
only started happening after a mains brown-out here (the mains went down and
back up several times in rapid succession as they tried to clear a fault in
the local grid, I guess). I wondered if that event might have damaged
something but everything apart from the popper works well.

I tried reloading the firmware* just in case that had been corrupted, but no
change.

The amp only pops when its warm i.e. in use, so it does seem to be
temperature-related.

Yes I know there are external pulsers available. Just fishing to see if

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 RF output wiring

2011-09-11 Thread Gary Hinson
Sure. Twisted pair is a VERY effective transmission line, and that is
 what is needed ...

Hey Jim, what kind of twisted pair could I use to feed my [mostly 50 ohm] HF
antennas? Coax is expensive in ZL so I'm willing to try alternatives. I'm
even thinking of homebrew balanced line with baluns at the bottom (a
coax-fed remote antenna switch in my case).

Re: [Elecraft] What your mother didn't tell you about transmission lines

2011-09-11 Thread Gary Hinson
Thanks guys.

I've made open wire/ladder line before and will be doing so again for a
planned vee-beam array, but I've never tried twisted pair other than UTP for
Ethernet (most people call it Unshielded Twisted Pair but I guess
Unified or Uniform would make sense too).

Years ago I used copper zip cord/bellwire for make-shift portable dipoles
(just knotted the centre point to stop it all unzipping!) - worked well
enough with an outboard toroidal balun and ATU in the K2 for a few QSOs
while on holiday in the South of France. There were better things to do
than play radio!

The 120 ohm impedance of zip cord should be a close-enough match for a
fullwave loop.

True, but it has very high loss (especially at higher

 ET3PMW's losses were

[Elecraft] K3 AGC attack rate

2011-08-22 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Elecrafties.

Is it possible to alter the K3's AGC 'attack rate' (for want of a better
phrase)? Specifically, I'd quite like to stop the AGC-S on SSB from
dropping the gain so markedly in response to a short noise spike.

Don, when the RF gain is fully cw ( max ) I have 3 bars
 on the S Meter,
when I slowly reduce the RF gain control I watch the S Meter
 and when I get
it just past the 9 o'clock position the S Meter will reduce

???

As I gradually reduce the RF gain on my K3, the S meter reading climbs
gradually towards full scale. I guess there is something different with

[Elecraft] K3 VFO episode

2011-04-04 Thread Gary Hinson

Hi guys.

This morning while calling some DX - split - on 30m, it sounded as if the DX
suddenly drifted about 100Hz LF. I thought at first I had knocked my VFO
but no, the frequency on the display was the same. However, having
accidentally QRMd the DX (oops!) I noticed that the K3 had fallen out of
split. I suspect the cause was some sort of control glitch with the K3 but
operator error is of course a distinct possibility, it being just after dawn
and just before my first cup of tea here.

Any ideas what might cause this? Has anyone else experienced it?

I'm running firmware 4.25.

  Hi everyone,

As we were just 2 of 5 operators in the club station (VK4WAT) we
decided to lock down our K3's so that the yaecomwood
 drivers would
be able to use the K3's.
Each K3 was locked down so that it was a single band
 radio, mine on
  40M and Gary's on 20M.

That's when we noticed the possible problem.

You can lock out all but one band in firmware but the radio will
  still change bands!

On my radio, I had all bands but 40M locked out, yet it
 could still
be changed to (And it was fully operational on) 20M and 80M even
though those bands were locked out.
The behaviour on 20M is noted in brackets.

  Try the following:
  Config: Band Map
Turn off all bands but 40M. (20M)
  Exit Config menu:

  From 40M band. (20M)
  Press Band UP
  Rig changes to 80M. (40M)
  Press Band Up again.
Rig changes back to 40M (20M)

  From 40M band:
  Press Band Down
  Rig changes to 20M. (15M)
  Press Band Down again
Rig changes back to 40M (20M)

Note that at no time does the rig change to one of the so called
WARC bands in these 2 tests.
However, if the test is done with the rig only having 30M
 enabled,
then shifts to 5MHz and 17M occur.

As my rig has the 2M internal transverter I have also tried that
  band with the following results:
2M band enabled, all others locked out.
  BND UP selects 10M
  BND DWN selects 80M

The behaviour is similar on all bands when only one band
 is enabled.

In each rig we also tried with 2 bands unlocked and each rig
performed as it should with all bands but the 2 selected for
operation being locked out and unable to be used.
So it appears that this issue occurs only when all but one
 band is
  locked out.

This has been checked on both my K3 (Serial #4257) and
 Gary VK4FD's
K3 (Serial #679) with the same results.
Gary's firmware revision at the time was v 4.25, mine was v 4.30
and although I now have 4.31 in the rig it still does this
 behaviour.

I'd like others to try the same procedure to see if the same
results are found and then we can get Wayne to checkout
 the firmware.

  Over to you all.

Re: [Elecraft] K3

2011-02-26 Thread Gary Hinson
I have to send my new K3 to the Elecraft Dr.

Since its assembled (100 wt and sub receiver not installed
yet)and no box, I'm thinking of generous
amount of bubble wrap box then in another box with peanuts.

Generous bubblewrap in a decently strong box, well taped up, is *probably*
enough by itself Larry, so the extra outer box with peanuts or more
bubblewrap will make sure it's OK, and postal insurance will be sure to be
sure.

Just in case of a disaster in the sorting office that somehow separates
radio from boxes, make sure the radio itself can be traced back to you -
perhaps sellotape your QSL card to the under side?

PS My Elecraft goodies always arrive in ZL immaculately, boxed and wrapped

[Elecraft] W2 SWR alarm

2011-02-25 Thread Gary Hinson

Hi.

I finally figured out how to set, adjust the level and reset/clear the SWR
alarm on my new W2 wattmeter.

I had been trying to command the W2 to change the alarm setpoint simply by
sending a [ or ] from the command tester in the W2 utility, but inputting [
or ] followed by enter always returned [44; each time. I re-read the
command reference (which, by the way Elecraft, is about as obscure and geeky
as it could conceivably be!) thinking I was sending the wrong command, but
apparently not. Next, I tried putting the [ command in a macro, and that
did the trick: each time I send the [, the W2 reduces the set point, and ]
increases the set point. Curiously the [ and ] now work whether I use the
macro or directly enter the commands.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - just 500 watts?

2011-01-25 Thread Gary Hinson
Many countries have lower limits ... 400W in G, VK, and ZL, I
 think

Almost right, Fred. We Kiwis have the luxury of a whole dB more, or 500W
out in old money, but since it's measured at the transmitter output rather
than measured or calculated at the antenna feed point (as in the UK), some
of us max out well below 500W of radiated RF even with a legal-limit amp.

As a long time member of the G-QRP-Club, I'm currently enjoying WSPRing to
Europe on 40m with 1W out of the K3 giving roughly ½W into the vertical and
a very slightly warm long run of coax. Admittedly I'd be bored stiff if it
wasn't fully automatic, so I leave it running while I Do Other Stuff,
working or sleeping in fact.

The KPA500 sounds ideal for me *provided* it is as reliable as, errr, oh,
death and taxes. Amp reliability is every bit as important as size and
weight for DXpeditioning and contesting.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Observations during NAQP CW

2011-01-12 Thread Gary Hinson
Yes, my experience is that 200 Hz is MUCH too narrow when running. I
normally use 350 or 400 Hz DSP with the 400 Hz roofer.

So long as the band is not totally chockablock with wall-to-wall sigs, I
quite often listen across 2.7kHz width on CW and occasionally I hear people
calling me towards the outer edges. Mostly, though, the wide bandwidth
allows me to keep an ear on the QRM on either side of me and perhaps to
shift my TX frequency to take advantage of the gaps. It takes practice to
be comfortable listening in such wide bandwidths, picking individual sigs
out by concentrating on their tone, speed, timing and keying
characteristics, but it saves a lot of fiddling around with the RIT or split
knobs. That said, when things get real tough or I get tired, I'm very glad
of the ability to shift the upper or lower limits independently, the very
nice narrow roofing filters and amazing non-ringing DSP good down to less
than 50Hz bandwidth.

On my machine running WinXP Pro, Windoze identifies the two different sound

Two identical cards will probably be listed with the same name twice in

Otherwise, you will just have to remember which is which.

It's good to be able to leave Windoze on the default sound card speakers,

Around 44wpm and up, the dots become shortened in normal mode but sound fine
in QRQ+ mode. I hadn't noticed that before. Tnx.

[Elecraft] K3 CW bug-ettes

2010-08-01 Thread Gary Hinson

Hi!

I've noticed some weeny bugs - or rather things that don't seem quite right
to me - in K3 firmware v4.03, DVR v1.03:

1. The new QRQ QSK mode works nicely aside from the known limitation of no
RIT. However, this limitation still seems to apply when I change from full
break in to semi break in using the band/QSK button. I have to go into the
menu and de-select the QRQ option as well to get RIT back.

2. When in SSB mode, I can send CW just by hitting the paddle but if I
assert the PTT first (e.g. using my footswitch), the rig goes into TX but
won't key.

3. In SSB mode, if I accidentally hit the DVR voice-box message replay
button twice, or if it bounces, the second replay interrupts the first but
there is an extended silent delay at the end after playing the message,
before the rig drops back to receive. [In CW mode, the second press chains
another message as expected, but there is no extended hang at the end.]

These are so minor, they hardly qualify as bugs. Just quirks really.
Features if you will.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW bug-ettes

2010-08-01 Thread Gary Hinson
The QRQ option works in semi-QSK mode as well. It allows you
 (or some machine!) to send
clean code at higher speeds. I've noticed that without the
QRQ option -- even in semi-QSK
mode -- when the speed gets above about 35 wpm it starts to
 have timing issues. After
about 45, it is really bad.

?? I'm surprised to hear that, Vic. I thought the QRQ+ thing was all about
making the TX-RX changeovers as slick as possible for QSK, so I don't know
how it would affect semi-break-in since the rig is mostly held in TX. I
seldom send above about 32 or 34wpm though, so perhaps there's some issue at
the high end that I just haven't noticed yet?

Re: [Elecraft] Balun Questions

2010-07-23 Thread Gary Hinson
1:1 baluns are dead easy to make: simply wind a few turns of the antenna end
of your coax feeder around a suitable toroid core before connecting it to
your balanced antenna. I use the FT241 cores from Amidon Associates, the
k type for 160-40m bands or 61 mix for the higher HF bands. I can
easily get 10 turns of RG58 coax on a core, and these seem to work nicely
for me [I don't have the knowledge, test gear or patience to test them on
the bench, but depend on Mr Sevick's advice in his book.] I've had no
problems running our legal limit of 500W into these.

4:1 baluns require a just bit more work. These are made by winding a
bifilar coil using two tightly-strapped wires of the appropriate size and
type on a suitable core - a chunky T400A2 powdered iron core in my QRO balun
(capable of well over the legal limit I'm sure), with an SO239 connector for
the coax.

All my baluns use watertight plastic boxes with rubber gaskets to seal their
lids, stainless-steel hardware for the antenna connections (S/S wing nuts
make them much easier to connect up antennas in the field), and some care to
ensure they remain watertight in use (e.g. I use superglue to wick into the
gaps and seal both SO239s and antenna connections to the case, plus
self-amalgamating rubber tape on any PL259-SO239 connections with a layer of
ordinary electrical tape over the outside to cut down UV damage to the
rubber).

For LF dipoles that will put a lot of stress on the center connections, I
use an army-surplus ceramic open wire feeder spreader for strain relief on
the antenna wire, using tie-wraps to hold the spreader to the box through
the box corner mounting holes which don't penetrate the sealed section, at
least in the boxes I can buy here.

Even buying everything new and importing the cores from the US, they are
*much* cheaper than any commercial units of similar power-handling capacity
that I can obtain, here in ZL anyway. As a very happy customer, I have no
hesitation in recommending Amidon www.AmidonCorp.com

There are photos etc. on my site at
http://www.g4ifb.com/html/homebrew.html#Baluns and I'd be happy to answer
any queries as best I can.

[Elecraft] FW: OT Carrying radios on commercial flight

2010-07-23 Thread Gary Hinson

I quite recently flew to Europe from California, and back,
 with a KX1 and
an HT and Buddipole (in suitcase). I put a copy of the QRP
 Quarterly in
my backpack, as it has a big ad for the KX1 in it, but they
 didn't look.

Five of us flew to 9L for CQ WW CW last year, hand-carrying three K3s (mine
in an aluminium camera bag/flight case, the others in laptop type bags or
ordinary carry-on bags), two Alpha amps (with the HT transformers separated
to avoid hernias), three switchmode PSUs, 5 laptops and assorted poles in
skibags, plus various wires and hand tools to make up a competitive M/2
station on the roof of an hotel in Freetown. We were all impressed that if
and when the gear was checked by airport security, we explained what it was
and what we were doing and were allowed on our way, whether travelling
together as a group from G to 9L or individually from US, A6 and ZL to G.
We carried our amateur license papers but I don't think we were asked for
them. We didn't take any SLA batteries. That said, we had a fabulous local
helper in 9L and there were some duties to pay when leaving 9L - a few
dollars cash and lots of smiling seemed to do the trick :-)

A couple of years earlier, I took a 2m HT as hand baggage on a trip from G
to ZL but, at the refuelling stop in A9, someone spotted it and insisted
that it was packed separately and handed to the pilot for the onward
journey. If placing an HT or KX1 or K2 with internal battery in hold
baggage, I would suggest separating the battery from the radio and
protecting the battery terminals to avoid shorting and fire, or else
inserting a plastic spacer between radio and battery, to avoid it
accidentally transmitting in flight.

On my K3, with the VOX set to off, the K3 still keys the PTT line out to my

the PTT footswitch, but it seems to key the PTT line for some odd reason.

While in CW mode just press and hold the VOX function Off
 (press left side

 VOX function
Off in CW mode the PTT function will be enabled which will
 allow you to use

Re: [Elecraft] OT: The use QRP

2010-05-13 Thread Gary Hinson
You might choose not to answer, but the station signing /QRP
 is breaking no laws.

Dead right Tom. I will work (almost) anyone who calls me, and do my level
best to log exactly what they send me as their callsign (plus or minus
sending errors, receiving errors and typoos of course - we are only human).
I don't have the time or inclination to check out every foreign
administration's callsign rules before logging someone: I figure it is THEIR
responsibility, not mine, to use a legally valid callsign with permission to
operate on whatever band, mode and time they are on. I do however like to
double check when someone sends me a weird call, just in case they or I
busted it. The calls used by foreign ops in BY still puzzle me because they
use two full callsigns separated by a slash.

But, the point made by our Swedish friend tells me that *some* hams would
deliberately avoid answering me if I ever signed ZL2iFB/QRP - something I
don't do, by the way, but the point is generally valid.

Personally, I *like* to know when the guy on the far end is running QRP or a
wet string antenna or whatever. It tells me my receiving setup is working
nicely, and usually means he is a homebrewer with a great big smile having
worked ZL with his flea-power. I *do* try to give priority to QRPers and
other weak callers in pileups, and sometimes deliberately ignore the really
loud callers, especially those who insist on calling all over QSOs in
progress and expect to shout their way into my log. QRPers generally aren't
that rude and frankly, out of necessity, they are often better operators.
QRPers happily persist until I have their complete call accurately logged,
whereas some others either ignore or don't notice me sending their calls
incorrectly, or give up after just one or two repeats when I am clearly
struggling to make them out. My ears prick up if I catch /QRP in a pileup
and I'll go the extra mile to complete the QSO and make someone's day. I
appreciate that some don't share my appreciation of QRP, nor should they.
I'm not trying to force my will on anyone. This hobby is broad enough for
us all.

So, if you do want to tell me you are QRP, by all means add /QRP to your
call or tell me what you're running. For me, that's cool and you'll
probably get a 72 from me at the end.

73
Gary ZL2iFB

PS Should we be sending 74 to those alligator callers, I wonder ...?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW/CW-REV config option

2010-04-30 Thread Gary Hinson
I prefer CW-R and only occasionally use CW if there is some close-in sig on the
high side that I'm
having trouble filtering away.

In Logger32, I have configured the Setup bands modes CW options to read
CW-R, which works fine
when QSYing on DXCluster spots etc. The only thing it doesn't fix for me is
automatically
monitoring the NCDXF beacons when the rig uses CW - no big deal really.

[I have another minor irritation with DATA-REV mode being selected sometimes
for some reason I
haven't fathomed yet. Again, no big deal so long as I notice - which generally
happens after I've
been sending RTTY CQs for ages without reply!!].

[Elecraft] K3 PTT dropouts on CW

2010-04-21 Thread Gary Hinson
I often use a footswitch to hold the PTT closed during an over, mostly to stop
my clunky old
amplifier dropping out until the end of the over. However if I release the PTT
footswith while
still sending CW (relying on the rig's VOX to continue holding the PTT), the K3
drops part of the
morse character being sent and blanks the sub-VFO display briefly.

Can anyone else replicate this? [If you don't have a footswitch, I guess the
microphone PTT or
front panel XMIT button will have the same effect.]

It only seems to happen if I release the PTT at the very instant the rig is
sending: if I'm careful,
I can release the PTT in between characters with no ill effects.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY using DATA mode on K3

Something that caught me out once or twice is that the PC's audio output should
be close to the K3's
tone settings on RTTy (can't remember if this is DATA or AFSK modes - possibly
both). With MMTTY,
it's possible to net the TX tones to the RX tones anywhere on the watefall, but
if the TX tones are
way off the rig's expected tone frequencies, they are filtered away. [This is
even without any TX
equalization.]

Re: [Elecraft] Contesting with logging software on a PC (not MAC)

2010-01-06 Thread Gary Hinson
 One
thing I would recommend is to run your log/db on a USB flash
based device, this way if your PC decides to act up or even
worse the drive dies then your log will be safe.

Errr, not if the flash drive dies, unless you meant to use the flash as a
backup. With no moving
parts, flash drives are probably more reliable than conventional hard drives
but they are not
immortal and are only rated for so many read/write operations. Also *all* your
local drives of
whatever type may go up in flames if the PC or shack catches fire, or someone
may steal the lot

There are also a few other technologies other then the flash
drive approach, you can get a free 2GB account from
http://www.dropbox.com and point your log to your dropbox
folder and it will backup into the ether in real-time and you
can even have the same dropbox folder on a backup PC ready to
 go.

That's the better option - an offsite backup - if used as a backup, in other
words again not the
only copy. The online file systems are fine if you have a sufficiently fast
and reliable Internet
connection, but again I would advise sending backups off-site and retaining one
or more local copies
of your log as well, just in case the organization running the offsite system
has a technical fault,
or deletes the files, or whatever (trust me: it happens).

You can also take occasional offline log backups onto CD-ROM, or yet another
flash drive, that you
physically remove from the machine and place elsewhere in safe storage, far
enough away from the
shack not to be caught in the same fire/burglary/whatever.

If that's all too much effort, at least consider uploading your log regularly
to Logbook of the
World. LoTW is a 'last resort' backup since it only stores the minimal amount
of info on each QSO,
but at least it is possible to retrieve the basic QSO data if you have no other
choice. This has a
useful side effect of increasing usage of LoTW!

73
Gary ZL2iFB

PS This applies equally to Macs and PCs. And PDAs. Even paper logbooks are
both valuable and
flammable!

Re: [Elecraft] Contesting with logging software on a PC (not MAC)

2010-01-06 Thread Gary Hinson
No actually I meant use the flash for the actual live log.
Flash based drives are far more reliable then traditional platters.

True, probably.

Flash has a life expectancy for ~10K read/writes far less
then what would be used in a 24hr contest :)

Is that so?

I have had many platter drives fail in my career and as of to
date never had a flash device fail (knocking on wood).

Me too, Lee, but the key point remains: if you only have a single copy of your
log on one device,
you're putting a lot of faith in that one device. Mechanical reliability of
the device is not the
only concern.

I am also a huge believer in off-site backups as well, we are
seeing newer technologies like dropbox where it acts more
like a local drive then a backup device. I use that service
to create corporate wide shared folders across large
geographical locations and its been very reliable.

Agreed!

I don't want to wander off topic here, but John was specific
about contesting scenarios and I think we have him covered :)

Yes but other forumites might have interepreted it in a more general sense. If
between us we help
someone avoid losing their entire log, I think we've done a good deed!

Also, does LOTW allow for restoring your log? I thought
they once frowned upon that at one time.

I don't know about them but yes you can retrieve your whole log, or rather
the data they have
retained from the log you submitted to LoTW. There are hints on how to do this
in at least 5
different ways on my website, if anyone needs it:

it wasn't a bad idea, but would be very low priority, based on
demand. It seems like this model may work for the Quadra
application too, without having researched it at all.

While repurposing the TX Inh pin has appear for non-Quadra users,
 it is a step backward

Sounds to me like an inadvisable combination of controls sharing the one line:
TX inhibit and key TX
clearly are opposites. If someone accidentally misconfigures their K3 (not
altogether unlikely),
this could get messy if a TX inhibit command actually keys the rig.

I'm not arguing against the facility to tune the rig if that's what you really
need, just not on the
TX inhibit line.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Diversity and CW?

2009-12-28 Thread Gary Hinson
Does CW benefit from diversity reception? Can anyone relate any
experiences with such improvement and some details on their setup
 including filters/settings?

Absolutely Jim!

Diversity helps on ALL MODES. The main thing I notice is that it fills in the
dips, in other
words when a signal fades in QSB on the main antenna, it seems to not dip as
far and may even come
up a little on the diversity receiver. The net effect is that the signal
appears to drifts
side-to-side from ear-to-ear rather than up-and-down into the noise.

I estimate diversity is worth a few very valuable dB on receive. It helps most
with those weak,
QSB-ridden DX signals wandering up and down at the band noise level.

Nothing special needed on the filters settings - just turn diversity on -
with one exception: for
best performance, the main and diversity RXs need matched filters. Mismatch
will apparently cause a
slow 'beat' and reduce the benefit.

The more important issue is to have sufficiently different antennas for main RX
and diversity RX,
ideally with both spatial and polarization diversity. I have been using my
normal TX antennas for
the main RX, all about 100m from the shack on a remote switch, and a single 30m
wire loop for
diversity RX, about 10m from the shack in the opposite direction. The 30m loop
works best on 30m,
of course, but helps to some extent on all other bands except 20m where it's
too badly mismatched.
A full set of monoband diversity RX antennas would be lovely, and I guess a
decent multiband
vertical would work OK too, but meanwhile the 30m loop does the job ... Or
rather it did until a
storm broke the line, and I put up a 12m TX loop instead! I miss diversity and
plan to reinstate
the 30m loop, moving the 12m loop across to the TX end.

Re: [Elecraft] More on K3 wiki site

2009-12-26 Thread Gary Hinson
So, if you are interested in K3 info, it looks like this site
 is a good one
to use. If you would like to add info to it, as the wiki
 writes, ... feel
free to make changes to any existing pages with respect to accuracy in
content, spelling, or grammar. Just click on the 'discussion'
 tab located to
the right of the K3 photo and provide the changes that are
 desired. The
sysops will come around periodically and update the pages with the
 discussion text.

Thanks so much for the advert Rich but the k3 wiki carries out-of-date
information and, by
preventing users from editing the content ourselves (like every other wiki I
use), we're left
waiting for the sysops to notice and respond to comments in order to correct
and update it ... Which
takes a while at best. This is hardly the most effective use of wiki
technology.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Carry-on Pelican 1510

2009-12-26 Thread Gary Hinson
If I am going to carry the radio onto the plane again, I
 would get a case
that's not so heavy - it only has to be protected from the
 other passengers
cases, and no bouncing around in flight.

I used a shiny alumin[i]um flight case meant for transporting camera and
electronics gear, from a
local shop. It is 18x13x6 externally. The pluck-out high density foam inside
is a fairly tight
squeeze for the K3, so it is snug and well supported.

Small light enough for hand baggage, and strong enough to risk being put in
the hold if the
airline people at the gate ever insist it can't go on board.

Try your local electronics or camera shops. Much cheaper than a Pelican too.

I was surprised to have no problems with it at the airport security scanners
travelling from ZL to G
to 9L and back, though I did have my amateur license in my carry-on backpack
just in case they were
curious.

Also suits the K2 (instead of, not as well as the K3!), leaving space for Palm
paddle, antenna wire,
switchmode PSU etc. See my K2 suitcase set at:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application software

2009-12-24 Thread Gary Hinson
In what must surely be the latest evidence of my brain's
 declining function,
I constantly confound the V-M and M-V buttons,
 inadvertently writing
over the memory contents. Pressing the V-M button while it
 is locked
would produce an audible beep and the text message unlock V-M

Nice idea Brian, a kind of senior interlock.

Meanwhile, I've taken the very simple but surprisingly effective measure of
colouring the V-M
button red with a marker pen. I now think twice before pressing it. Usually.

I've also managed to delete the contents of a memory accidentally, more than
once, by trying to
escape from the memory entry mode having ignored the red. Hitting the CLR
button doesn't just
cancel the memory entry mode, it clears the memory, as it is supposed to do
according to the manual.
Maybe the K3 should require a double-press or hold of the CLR button to clear a
memory?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB-CW feature fails

 Note that you
 must use the
internal keyer via the PADDLE jack, not external keying via
 the KEY jack.

Is that true, Rick? I use an external keyer plugged into the KEY

the key input, judging by the output power following my keying anyway.

[Elecraft] Assigning macros to keys: need names

Like many here, I'm still having fun experimenting with the key

I wonder if it would be possible to show the macro name on the K3
display when assigning macros to keys, please? IN the CONFIG The
display reads function on A and MACRO 1 [or 2-8 after I press the
relevant number button] but I would rather see the names I assigned to
the macros in place of fnuction rather than having to remember their
numbers.

FWIW I've just had another failure of the little AF knob. All four

lost a chunk off the end. I think I saw a rumor here that new
stronger knobs (with metal collets?) were being ordered - does anyone

Re: [Elecraft] TMp Cable and Allen Wrench Envelope

2009-10-28 Thread Gary Hinson
I am a proud new owner of a K3, which was handcarried by a
friend to Europe. After a week or so he sent me two little
envelopes, one with a TMP cable, one with a Allen wrench. I
couldn't find a hint what to do with these little parts, are
they a sparepart/tool for just in case or did I miss
something and they are needed to bring the nice new toy up to

That cable is for inserting the mojo.

The Allen wrench is needed to remove the VFO knob to reveal the secret
mojo input connector.

Please do not share this information with non-Elecrafties.

[Elecraft] K3 Instant-split macro

2009-10-27 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi all.

I'm having fun configuring my instant-split function, and an undo, to
my personal liking, feeding off ideas from others on this reflector
and trying them out via the K3 Utility. It works well but the really
cool part is that we can each have our own settings without pestering
the Elecrafty wizzards to death, or voting, or waging flame wars
here to define the perfect split function by committee. Fabulous!

Would it be possible for us to replace the standard SPLIT function
(accessible by a long hold on AB) with our own custom split function,
please? The command to enter split mode within the macro would of
course still need to call the default split function not re-start the
macro (!), but this way we would not need to remember which macro key
we had reassigned for split as it is conveniently already labelled.

Me too.

Like you, I thought the amp relay was playing up but sometimes the
audio level slides down just after the rig goes to RX, whereas with a
sticky amp relay the RX side is normally low from the very moment of
changeover.

I thought it might be a problem with my ant system, ant switch or

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Split reminder

2009-10-19 Thread Gary Hinson
There is just so much any manufacturer can do to protect an operator

from him or herself. The K3 already has the delta f light, the SPLIT

indicator on the display (TU W2ZK - I'd forgotten that) and
 frequency
readout for both VFOs. As one who has made his share of errors with

the K3 and other radios, there is simply no substitute for just
learning how to use any radio.

True, and it seems I'm still learning! I like the arrangement on the
TS850 and similar radios which have a set of TX and RX buttons for VFO
A and VFO B, with LED indicators for the active VFO. Visually, it's
easy to select the split. The K3's smaller display and control panel
make this harder, but not impossible. I'm just retraining my eyes to
spot the new clues. Maybe turning up the LED brightness will help
(Menu - LED BRT) but I support the idea of making the delta-F LED
flash in true split mode (not just with RIT/XIT).

I usually get it wrong having excitedly QSYd to a spot frequency on
DXcluster: the rig defaults to no-split, naturally. I normally
remember to tweak VFO B up 1 (or whatever) and set the sub-RX to
listen there, but sometimes I neglect to hit-and-hold the split button
as well. That's quite a lot of buttons to press in a hurry.

So FWIW I also vote for an instant split function, i.e. if I hold
the split button, I'd like VFO B to shift up/down by a configurable
and ideally mode- and maybe even band-dependent offset from VFO A and
also turn on the sub RX [if fitted] on VFO B.

[Yes, this would of course be an optional, configurable,
take-it-or-leave-it change to suit those of you who don't like *my*
defaults!]

In the absense of a firmware fix for this, maybe someone can figure
out a way to make the logging program send the relevant commands to
the K3 from one button press, or just whenever I click a cluster spot
(since most spottees are operating split)?

The real problem with split errors is the insidious nastiness of the

cops when a quick RSE up will do (and the DX isn't TX!), or
 perhaps
a Talk cluster message that no one else sees. Either would be
 far less
 disruptive.

Absolutely. See http://www.k6sgh.com/splitpolice.htm :-) 4U1UN on
30m was wiped out by an EA caller this morning, who I think was
calling another lower station on split. The cops who sent UP UP UP
UP IDIOT etc., several times each, made a simple problem worse since
the EA was evidently not listening on his TX freq (another good reason
for the instant-split function to also set the sub-RX on VFO B).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KDVR

2009-10-14 Thread Gary Hinson
By the way, I since found out that the RX; command is sent to the
K3
on hitting Esc[ape] iff the COM port configuration has Radio PTT
via command checked. This has the nice effect of canceling DVR
 playback on hitting Escape.

Thanks Iain. Works like a dream when I figured out that I simply need
to cut-n-paste the{CATA1ASC K31;SWT21;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT21;} and
similar commands from your earlier message into N1MM's config SSB
messages option for the relevant message, in place of the wav\
stuff in there by default.

I guess we can trigger messages M5-M8 as well with the appropriate
commands? I'm thinking that, for a multi-single club effort in CQ WW
SSB, we might get the two main ops to record their messages in banks
1-4 and 5-8 respectively. Mind you, it's easy to re-record any
message on the K3, much easier than messing around with WAV files on
the PC.

Anyway, I think this feature might *finally* be enough for the K3 to
displace the FT1000's from the club!

Re: [Elecraft] Any solution to the audio blast issue yet ?

Are you saying *you* have heard the blast? If so, what were you doing

what triggers the blast will help trace it.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Will I Lose the 120 Watt Max If I updateTheSoftware?

2009-09-21 Thread Gary Hinson
Most 3-500 based amplifiers with 2800 V (no load) on the plates
require 120 Watts or so for legal limit output. That's about
 11 dB gain.

Even with 3 x 3-500s in my LK550 and 2,900V no load, I only need about
25-40W input depending on band to reach our legal limit: 500W. Which
is plenty, way too much in fact for the digital modes.

Part 97.317(a)(2) limits the maximum gain to 15 dB
 (approximately 50 W drive for 1500 W out).

Not in NZ. Is there really a max gain regulation in the US? How
quaint!

The extra 10 to 20 watts of drive makes a difference for those
 who have SB-220, TL-922, AL-82, AL-1300, AL-572, etc. amplifiers.
It can mean another 200+ W output.

... The difference will be small in pure signal strength terms but
sure the operator's confidence is improved. A cheaper option (as used
by certain CBers) is to tweak your power meter to read high.

Seriously, though, a bit more attention to operating skills and maybe
a little investment in your antennas and feeders will eclipse the QRO
option every time. #1 DXing tip is simply to be very active and
listen hard. #2 is to save up those tenths of dBs you get for free
by eliminating unnecessary coax connectors, and indeed unnecessary
coax. Someone should start giving out 0.1dB savings stamps and a
DXers' collector's card.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Quantizing...

2009-09-21 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Tony.

As a very active CW op, I would find what Wayne has just mentioned a

backward step. Quite often I find occasion to ask DX to move
 up 1 when
they call me as I finish a QSO I had initiated by responding
 to a CQ -
in other words - I need to move my intending QSO away from the other

 stations' frequency.
It's really handy to be able to go up 1 or 2 etc exactly.
 Rounding off
the next KHz would totally defeat the purpose for me; or am I
 missing or
 misinterpreting something here?

As I recall, the TS850 only quantized (rounded off) the frequencies
when using the rapid QSY function (i.e. the M.CH/VFO.CH knob). QSYing
with the VFO knob or RIT/XIT stepped as normal in whatever step rates
it was set to with no rounding.

Quantizing was useful to get quickly to rounded frequencies, such as
the NCDXF beacons on 28.200 21.150 etc. Also for rapid band
changes when chasing mults in contests (QSY 7035 NOW).

By the way, I'm sure that
 the Kenwood
rig could be told whether or not to quantize with its'
 equivalent up
1 button as I would call it.

Maybe a config setting - I can't remember. But the K3 function will
presumably be a configurable option too so those who want to quantize
can and those who don't needn't.

Actually an up 1 split function (e.g. if A=B, then SPLIT would
automatically add +1 kHz on B since there's no point in 'splitting' on
the same freq) would be neat for us CW DXers - maybe an up X button
where X is a settable parameter would suit the SSBers too?

Re: [Elecraft] Strange sound

2009-09-19 Thread Gary Hinson

I've never seen this situation written about but I've just come
across a very strange sound on my K3 - S/N-1068. With the dial
on 29.492.6 USB I get a continuous CW sounding signal. It
alternates a dot, then a dash then a space. If it were truly CW is
would be considered poorly sent CW and the speed is about 10-
12 WPM. The lengths of the characters are not exactly the same
each time but it never stops. I discovered it yesterday and
wanted to make sure it was not just a one time thing.

I can switch modes and it remains. Removing the antenna does
not stop it, actually makes it a little stronger with the noise
level
dropped. I'm using firmware 3.30 beta. I tried on the SUB
 receiver and I hear nothing.

Hi Jim.

I have a fairly weak birdie there (well v close), a solid carrier not
12 WPM CW. Can hear it on the subRX as well.

Were you using the NR I wonder? It can sometimes make stuff sound
like it's comin n goin.

Re: [Elecraft] Band changing/mode changing

2009-08-14 Thread Gary Hinson
But . In the heat of switching back and forth you must be VERY
careful to use the VM button - do not miss and use the VM button
because you will end up losing one of the memories and have
 two memories
 the same.

There is no safeguard on VM . That is supposedly on the
 list to
have a double tap of the VM before it writes to the memory
location,
but there are too many other things ahead of it, I guess.

I've coloured my VM button with a red marker pen. Far fewer finger
fumbles fankfully.

[Elecraft] K3 sudden power loss

2009-08-11 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi all.

Yesterday afternoon my K3 #2887 was merrily transmitting 33% at 5W on
17m for WSPRnet as normal when by chance I noticed the external
wattmeter was showing no power out on transmit - none at all, not a
squeak. The internal wattmeter is also showing no power out, aside
from the first bar permanently lit in TX. The receivers still seem to
be working fine.

The rig was working OK up to then and has been since mid-April. I
wasn't fiddling with any of the settings at the point it packed up,
but before anyone asks here are the ten checks I've done so far:

1. I tried sending CW and SSB - neither works. Nor does TUNE, at any
power setting. Nor does any other band.

2. I tried using VOX on both semi and full break-in, and PTT - no joy
there either. The TX LED lights as expected but no watts escape.

3. I've plugged a 100W dummy load directly into the ANT2 socket,
selected ANT2 and tried transmitting, just in case there's some cable
or antenna problem. Nope, that's not it.

4. The K3 is not in TEST mode (the TX light is on continous not
flashing). I cycled TEST mode on and back off to be real sure.

5. I checked CONFIG: TX INH is off, and again cycled it through the
other settings to be sure to be sure. Nope, not that.

6. I tried running the TX gain configuration through K3 Utility: the
front panel shows ERR TXG and the K3 Utility reports: Unexpected
response DS@@°À; to DS; State 153 Calibration power
settled at 0.0 W .; There be gremlins.

7. According to the internal metering, the K3's voltage is reading a
steady 13.5V and the current sits at about 1.28A on RX, increasing to
about 1.62A when I hit the PTT. No change from that level when I key
the paddle or speak into the mike, whether whispering, shouting or
swearing. I even tried coaxing it to life, complementing it on the
colour of its LCD ...

8. The power setting makes no difference: I've tried from 0 to 100W.
I hear the PA relay engage around 12W as normal, and the internal
power meter changes between high and low settings as expected. It's
just taunting me.

9. The 20A circuit breaker on the PA is in - not that I'd have
thought it would prevent the QRP level working at least.

10. I've reloaded *all* the firmware: I was using the latest beta
3.25. Reloaded that, no change. Reloaded an older version 2.78,
still no change.

What should I try next? I guess I need to pop the lid, look for smoke
emitters and poke around at the TX driver and PA stages plus the
antenna change over relay and ATU area with a multimeter but haven’t
figured out exactly where to poke yet, nor what I should expect to see
on the meter when I do ...

I have other radios here and a scope. I guess I could try to trace
the TX signal with the K3 set to QRP, fishing around with a wire tail
on another radio's antenna socket or the scope input ... Maybe ...
What do you think?

Re: [Elecraft] Off-Topic - Straight-key speed cpontrol -- Ergonomics

2009-08-08 Thread Gary Hinson
I think maintaining a loose linkage in the wrist, elbow and
shoulder
really helps to relax. I like to fidgit around a bit while sending
CW; can't do that with my arm glued to the table. YMMV, of course!
 Whatever works best for you.

I recently bought a Natural keyboard from Microsoft which has an
angled split down the middle so the left and right hands are less
inclined to intertwine themselves around the middle letters. As I get
used to it, it's gradually helping me improve my touch typing. It's
sold on the benefits for sufferers of Repetitive Strain Injury (=
typists elbow = glass arm).

Of a little more relevance, it came with an oversized mouse with a
high thumb groove and operating instructions that tell me to lay the
right side of my hand on the table next to the mouse, then rotate my
hand until the thumb reaches the groove, *leaving the side of my hand
still resting on the table*. Like the keyboard, it felt a little odd
at first but I'm getting used to to it ... And now I'm starting to
wonder about tilting my Bencher paddle in a similar way. I can easily
make a little wooden wedge to lift the left paddle relative to the
right, but a total redesign of the paddle to suit my hand's natural
resting position will probably work better than the original paddle
design which sits parallel to the desk.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Tuning knob resistance to tight

2009-08-07 Thread Gary Hinson
Back then others reported great success replacing the felt
 washer with a
leather washer cut from an old belt or other scrap leather
 piece. No fuzz
and they said it provided great friction control.

Since the K3 uses similar felt washers for both VFOs, is it worth us
making this change now, even before we get the fuzzies, Ron?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Level

2009-08-06 Thread Gary Hinson
I have mentioned in the past that I have noticed, fairly
frequently, that sometimes when first powering up my K3 the
received audio sounds weak. This evening I was listening to a 20M
QSO between an LU and an LA, both S9. I had the distinct notion
that for the af gain setting the audio was not as loud as I would
 normally expect.

Hi Mike.

My K3 is left on most of the time so I haven't noticed it at startup
... But I did notice sporadic significant reductions in the audio
level on 30m the other evening. At first I thought it was someone
tuning-up zero-beat on my frequency and triggering the AGC, but it
wasn't that. Next I thought there might be an intermittent antenna
connection but the SWR was fine and the coax cables in the shack, at
least, are all fine. I've had a similar problem in the past with a
sticky antenna change over relay in the amplifier (sometimes on going
to receive the RF level is way down because the relay hasn't properly
closed - a quick tap on the PTT usually fixes it, temporarily), but on
this occastion the S meter level looked normal. So I'm foxed.

I haven't noticed it since. If it happens again I'll take more notice
of what's happening and might even record it.

73
Gary ZL2iFB

PS The end literally dropped off my K3's AF knob yesterday as I
touched it - the knob appears to be crumbling like dry fruitcake. It
hasn't been knocked or abused, just used normally. Elecraft kindly
already sent me a set of replacement knobs due to the outer ring/knobs
cracking over month ago so now I really must make time to fit them!

I wonder if physical proximity of the USB-serial adapter to the rear

Re: [Elecraft] Magnetic Loops

2009-08-03 Thread Gary Hinson
I'd like to be clear when I wrote earlier that a small
 transmitting loop is
 very inefficient.

And I'd like to emphasise that this thread is about physically small
magnetic loops, not fullsize quad or delta type loops which are
efficient radiators with relatively high radiation resistance, in my
experience. I have used fullwave wire loops on 80, 40 and 30m for
both TX and RX with great success.

By the way, I don't know if it's the same with magnetic loops but the
fullwave loops radiate mostly broadside to the plane of the loop.
If the loop is vertically oriented (e.g hanging between two trees),
the polarization of the signal is determined by whether the loop is
fed at a horizontal or vertical section of wire. If the entire loop
is laid 'flat on its back', most of the radiation heats the ground,
some heats the clouds but I'm uncertain what polarization the signal
would be - probably horizontal I guess since all the wire is parallel
to the ground but I may be wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 160M Diversity Users

2009-07-24 Thread Gary Hinson
I am about to order filters for the K3 and need some final
 advice.

Hi Mike.

I have a pair of 400Hz and a pair of 250Hz 8 poles in my K3. I'm
pretty active, 99% CW, and rarely use the 400Hz (maybe once a day) and
very rarely the 250Hz (once a week). The DSP works extremely well.
So of these, I'd recommend the 400Hz, and save up for the 250's later
if you decide you need even narrower bandwidth than the 400+DSP can
achieve.

The 8 poles probably have a better shape factor than the 5 poles,
judging by my experience comparing the 5 pole stock Kenwood filters
with the 8 pole IRC replacements in my old TS850. With the DSP, I'm
not sure you'd notice the difference but as you see I went for the
better filters and don't regret it.

On extremely rare occasions (e.g. fishing out CW callers in SSB QRM
from Indonesian pirates) I have wound the filters right down to the
minimum 50Hz and even at that ridiculously narrow setting, the K3 is a
joy to copy with no appreciable ringing - miles better than the TS850
and indeed any other rig I've tried.

I also use diversity with a 30m fullwave loop. Works great!

I'm thinking of getting the AM and/or FM filters next so I can open up
the bandwidth to listen to a whole chunk of band at once using an AF
spectrum program: it sometimes helps to listen to all the callers in a
pileup and to choose a clear slot to call.

Gary ZL2iFB

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Diversity Rocks!

2009-07-13 Thread Gary Hinson
Just how much of an improvement do you find
 with diversity
reception? Is it possible to quantize?

Hi Doug.

I'm not (yet) on topband but reckon that diversity is worth a few dbs (up to
maybe 5 dB?) on the other bands, particularly on 30m where my RX antenna (a
30m fullwave wire loop) works best. Lately I've been trying WSPRnet and
find that, on 30m anyway, I can hear QRP sigs in EU down to 0.1 Watt by
greyline while the Europeans haven't yet heard me below about 1 W out. My
TX antenna on 30 is a rotary wire dipole at 13m AGL on the tower at the far
end of 100m of RG213, where I probably lose a couple of dB. The RX loop is
up in the trees only 20m away from the shack, also fed with a shorter hank
of RG213. I haven't yet tried swapping RX and TX antennas over.

[Elecraft] K3 quick reference guide

2009-07-03 Thread Gary Hinson
Dear Elecrafties,

Some years back I came across a neat little quick reference guide for the K2
and it has served me well over the years, reminding me how to do stuff
without having to drag out the manual. I printed it out and laminated it to
sit in my 'K2 suitcase set' until needed.

Well now I'd like something similar for the K3 - preferably the same format
i.e. one double-sided sheet of paper, containing not the really
simple/obvious stuff, and not the arcane things you're unlikely to need when
traveling (e.g. installing new filters? Recalibrating?), just the middle
ground: operating tips, every day settings and perhaps what to check first
when the mojo dries up.

Before I start writing one, has anyone on the list already got one I could
either use or adapt, please? If I write one, I'd be more than happy to
share the result with the list, perhaps even via the Elecraft site if anyone
else would find it useful. I'm tempted also to write it on Google Docs so
others can contribute to the development, although formatting may be too
tricky for GooDocs.

Re: [Elecraft] What are you guys using for external speakers?

2009-06-06 Thread Gary Hinson
I had two old 4 1/2 speakers I picked up at a yard sale ...

Many of us have decent hi-fi speakers sitting there on the desk already - in
my case a lovely set of Bose PC speakers, a fantastic present from my YL.
PC speakers (other than Bose anyway!) are cheap. They are amplified, have a
wide frequency range and none of the booming or rattling resonances which my
homebrew speakers always seemed to have.

The Bose speakers have two sets of stereo inputs so I can run both the PC
and the rig into them at the same time, controlling the levels independently
on the PC and K3. It shouldn't be too hard to provide 2 inputs on others
if you're willing to open the box and experiment. Alternatively, I guess
you can run the rig's line level output into the PC sound card input, and
configure the card to play it through the PC speakers, using the cound
card's input level control to set the rig level and output volume control
for both PC sounds and RX audio.

You *may* need to use ferrites or decouplers to keep RF out of them but I've
never had a problem with any of mine. Avoid any with nasty cheap
switch-mode PSUs like the plague though! Most seem to run fine on 13.8V byt
YMMV.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Kit - 1/2 nuts on front panel

2009-04-30 Thread Gary Hinson
OK - what kind of wrench can be used on the 1/2 front panel
 nuts (AF,
RF, etc) to NOT scratch the panel?

A metric socket worked OK for me, provided it's deep enough to fit the
wrench into the socket without fouling the pot shaft (sometimes need to just
place the end of the wrench into the socket without pushing it all the way
home, but be careful). Sorry, I don't recall the size.

Pliers are dangerous but as a last resort you might try protecting the
surrounding area of case with some card and be *extremely* careful while you
tighten the nut. If you're going to slip, try to make sure to keep
scratches within the area that will be covered by the knobs!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 switching to split freq question

2009-04-30 Thread Gary Hinson
There is a more direct method than the one you used.
Press BSET (Set VFO B) and then use the MODE button, tap the A/B
button to exit BSET - that will retain the frequency for you.
Alternately, tap the A/B button to swap VFOs and then tap the MODE
button to change the VFO B (now in VFO A position) mode - tap A/B to
return the VFOs to their original positions.

Hey, it might be good to be able to hold the REV button with one hand,
change VFO B's mode, band, antenna, NR or whatever with the other, then
release the REV. At present, holding REV seems to lock out band, mode and
most other changes except QSYing VFO B using the main A dial.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Kit - foam light blockers

2009-04-30 Thread Gary Hinson
Are the foam pieces supposed to stick down to the second
 layer of LCD
or wedged all the way down to the switch substrate?

I had the same question a couple of weeks back Terry!

Ron told me:

That step of the assembly procedure says it all: The blockers should be
nearly flush with the front edge of the LCD to block the excess light that
leaks out of each end of the display. It's no more complicated than that.
Early testing of the K3 showed that enough light leaked out of the ends of
the display that you could see it around the edge of the buttons nearest the
display, especially in dim room light. Wayne added the blockers to stop
that small amount of light leakage.
