[Elecraft] Tbl with k3util since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10

2014-01-21 Thread KA1OZ
Hi-
I've not been able to run k3util since upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10. I had
no problem running on 13.04 and I can still run CQRLOG with no problem.

k3util: k3util_1_13_6_17

Has anyone had similar troubles?

Thanks for your response. k3util does not appear to execute, either when
double-clicking the icon or when executing within a terminal. It just
seems to sit there.

Re: [Elecraft] First QSO!

2014-03-22 Thread KA1OZ
May I add another congratulations, Sean!

I think we all remember our first QSO. Mine was in 1960. My call was
WV2LBV back then. The rig was my first build from the ARRL Handbook
(6146 osc/amp) and of course since I was a rank novice it was rock
bound. I had a very used Hallicrafters SX-99 for a receiver and a trap
dipole wrapped around the outside of the 4th floor of the apartment
building we lived in. My first contact was in the Dakotas (memory fails
so I don't remember whether it was north or south).

I was nervous as all get out...knees knocking, key stuttering! I also
discovered that if I didn't sit still my body would warp the crystal
frequency by capacitive coupling (very early FM).

No, I don't think any ham forgets that very first QSO. What joy!

Re: [Elecraft] CAIG DEOXIT or Servisol Super 10

2013-06-17 Thread KA1OZ
Even in the world of experts there are divergent opinions on which
method is best and which can bite you in the end. During my years as a
transmission technician with Sprint (formerly Southern Pacific
Communications) the word was to _not_ use petroleum jelly as it can
damage the jars (cases) of some batteries (2 volt cells, actually).
No-Oxide grease was the order of the day.

In the case discussed here, I venture to say that Don's experience ought
to be significant and a guiding light. The added virtue is the lower
cost. Light oil ought to do the job nicely so long as you don't over
use it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 utility and Lbuntu 12.04

2012-06-04 Thread KA1OZ
Hi there--

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with K3 Utility v1.12.3.28 with no problems at
all! I don't know the difference between Ubuntu and Lbuntu, but perhaps
David Fleming does (he coded the K3 Utility for Linux).

Re: [Elecraft] Will a casual SSB operator enjoy the K3?

2013-04-04 Thread KA1OZ
Tom, I was in a similar situation. I had been away from ham radio for
quite some time and wanted to dive back in. I, also, was looking for
"my last rig".

Well, Tom, I found it! My K3 #859 is a wonderful radio! A casual
operator can operate this radio right out of the box, but it is super
flexible and over time you might discover features and menu options that
let you feel even more at home with your K3. By the way, my K3 is my
first solid state HF radio (I have a hollow state brain).

So if you want a truly great radio with incredibly impressive customer
service look no further than Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Re.: [Elecraft_K3] Does the K3 need refreshing ......OR

2013-05-30 Thread KA1OZ
I've been following this thread and realized how different my
perspective is! Unlike many hams, I tend to seek out what I consider to
be the best available rig that matches my resources and make the
purchase for the long haul.

I've been operating on and off since 1960 and have only owned very few
stations (Johnson Viking II w/ HQ110, National NCX-3, K3). When I
decided on the K3 (Serial 859) I was looking for a solid rig that would
be on the air for ever...and I think I've got it!

As an early adopter of the K3 I've watched it become more of a radio the
longer I've had it, keeping up with the firmware updates and some of the
hardware updates as well as my increasing knowledge of how to make the
radio more mine as I learned more about the configuration possibilities.

And now my beloved K3 is becoming mature and has taken on the status of
being my old friend. I can't imagine replacing it with any other rig on
the market today.

Ever since the frustration of having an early front panel failure in K3
#859 was soothed away by prompt aid and comfort by none other than one
of the founders, Wayne, himself, I've been in awe of the superlative
support experience that is the wonderful lot of Elecraft and the
Elecrafter. In my professional life I've only come upon very few tech
support operations that offer "satisfactory" service. APC is one of
them: I maintain 40 6kva and 2 40kva UPSes. You can imagine that there
are failures. But in each and every case, I was handled promptly, with
courtesy and interest and with a perfectly satisfactory resolution.

Given the number of K1, K1X, K2 and K3 boxen out there, that Elecraft
can maintain the personal attention we fortunate folk enjoy is no small
feat. This "generosity" of attention cannot help but feed the
"generosity" and effectiveness of aid that is reflected in the Elecraft
Reflector.

Way to go, Folks!

Propagation was tough in Massachusetts. I couldn't hear net control at

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (9-19-10)

2010-09-19 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Once again, I'm afraid I heard nothing. I started listening to 14.314
from 1745 and continued until 1815 and I heard nothing but atmospherics.
During that time I qsy'd up and down to be sure I wasn't missing
anything. My antenna is a vertical and there is a rise in the land to
the west of me. Perhaps the combination cuts me off from the West! I'm
fine into eastern Europe, so I know that my rig's ears are fine.

I'll keep trying.

Seems to me that adjusting the "Pitch" to one that most comfortably
stands out from others and then using "Spot" ought to accomplish the
same thing. No?

[Elecraft] Appreciation

2010-11-08 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Generally, when one purchases a product, its value depreciates almost
immediately in a downward spiral. Elecraft is proving that the reverse
can be true. The usability of the K3, terrific from the start,
continues to improve with each new firmware update (I'm discounting the
little setbacks). I would call this "appreciation". The addition of
APF adds a new dimension to this rig that I could not have imagined. To
give context here, my last rig was a National NCX-3. When I renewed my
interest and bought the K3, it was with the intent of buying a "keeper".
Wow...I was right! It *is* a keeper.

There are those nervous about the radio almost perpetually running
"beta" firmware. It is just this always moving status and the team
behind the development of this code that is the unique element that sets
Elecraft apart from the rest of the ham radio equipment manufacturers.

Vive le difference!!

[Elecraft] Uniquely terrific

2009-06-22 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
I'm afraid I cannot stop myself from making a comment. It's a cheer.
It's a remark for a remarkable situation.

Never before in my life within amateur radio or any other venture, have
I seen such easy flow of information and feedback up and down (or is it
in and out of) the interface between user and provider.

I've dealt with various tech support venues, some of which I rate quite
highly, however the interplay between user/customer and provider is so
natural as to be a true partnership.

I knew, when I re-awakened my interest in ham radio, that I wanted a
radio I could grow with. "Fait acomplie." What I didn't know was that
I would witness the process of its growth.

Glad to be and Elecrafter!

[Elecraft] K3: "FREQ" instead of banner

2009-08-07 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Hi All--

A strangeness: on a couple of occasions, when turning on my K3 (FW
3.14) instead of the banner that I programmed with the K3 Utility, the
word "FREQ" appears in the VFO position. The only way I've been able to
remove it from the display is to turn off the radio and turn it back on
again.

Anyone else seen this?

Just loaded 3.19 and will see if there's any change in behavior. This
is not a major nuisance...it's only happened three times, but it may
point to an unruly vector or corrupt code.

Thanks for the suggestion.

[Elecraft] Auto-Notch Broken in 3.25 (I probably missed this)

2009-08-16 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Tried listening for the Elecraft SSB net at 1800. There was a
heterodyne or other interfering signal on 14.316. I tried to use
Auto-Notch, but nothing changed. Then I went to manual and notched it
out completely.

Hope I'm not adding too much noise to the FW discussion!

Thanks for the suggestion, Ken. I reloaded and still have the same
condition. Doesn't matter whether AGC if fast or slow. The tone
doesn't wander much and in manual mode I can quiet the tone and not have
to fuss to keep it quiet.

AGC is on. Here are the settings:

AGC Delay nor
AGC Hold 000
AGC PLS nor
AGC SLP 002
AGC THR 008
AGC-F 140
AGC-S 010

Otherwise, the function appears to work properly when in manual mode.

I, too, went back to 3.19. Auto-notch works as it always did before I
loaded 3.25.

My rig is a pretty early one, serial 859, with no mods performed since
the original build. Never did the mods because I never saw the need.
After an early failure of the front panel, the radio has been performing
flawlessly. I couldn't be more pleased! But, I'll have to see how
things fall out to determine whether to stay with 3019 and have
auto-notch or go forward again to 3.25 to enjoy the improved NR.

I use the Proset 5 (HC-5 element) with good results and comments. Even
though I normally use hearing aids when out in the world (but not when
hamming) I find that Audio Gain set to Lo is fine for me.

I also use the Heil HM-5 when not wearing the headset.

I'm told that audio sounds great regardless of mic.

Hi Jim, and congratulations on getting a K3. If you are like most of
us, I think you will find that this rig offers loads of possibilities
rarely found elsewhere.

Regarding the firmware, the last "official" regular version was 3.14,
which is still offered on the Elecraft website. However, the K3, being
at heart a software defined radio, has challenged the usership to make
requests and offer suggestions to further add to the value of this fine
rig. Thus, the engineers at Elecraft, always in "turbo" mode, have been
responding with upgrades and updates almost continuously.

Most K3 owners subscribe to this culture of constant improvement. It
seems to be exclusive with Elecraft because management and engineering
is so continually tuned in to the needs and desires of its customer base
as reflected in the reflector. Indeed, you will find that Wayne and
Eric chime in quite frequently, as they always seem to have one eye on
the list.

Before being released as beta, the firmware is field tested by a small,
but critical, group of users that thoroughly exercises the coded
functions and reports back with their findings. In most cultures, the
code would be released as "final", but the relationship between Elecraft
and the usership is so dynamic that seldom is anything settled. In
comparison, consider Microsoft releases, which are "final", until the
next Tuesday patch releases come down the pike.

So, if you would feel more comfortable with a "final" release on your
K3, you can certainly downgrade to release 3.14, or you can benefit from
the constant drive towards perfection with 3.30, which you will find
just peachy.

My 2 cents...

[Elecraft] "Spasmodic" CW with 3.41

2009-10-08 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Greetings--

I discovered tonight, having downloaded and installed 3.41 a few nights
ago, that when connected to HRD, my K3, #859, has problems with the
keying circuit, regardless if I'm using my paddle or my straight key.

While in TX Test mode, when connected to HRD, dits and dahs become
"spasmodic" with dahs occasionally elongated or cut off short. The dits
will occasionally "miss"...not be there when expected.

When disconnected from HRD, normal operation resumes. Now, I only tried
this on TX Test and not into the air or dummy load.

When I reverted back to 3.30, the problem vanished...ceased to exist,
connected to HRD or not.

Has anyone else discovered this?

I'm running HRD 4.1 Build 2312. I should add that the radio is as it
was when I put it together. I have not made any mods. I don't know if
this is pertinent or not.

Re: [Elecraft] "Spasmodic" CW with 3.41

2009-10-09 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
This is a very plain vanilla setup. I'm using an iambic paddle plugged
into the paddle input and my straight key into the key input. Other
than my KUSB connection between my rig and my laptop, which runs Vista,
there is no other connection. And with the K3 in TX Test, there is no
RF possibly running around the shack.

I also have a plain vanilla setup of HRD...out of the box, you might
say. I do know that without changing HRD's setup, I can cure the
problem by going back to 3.30. It would appear that something in 3.41
has done the changing!

Thanks for your input, Wayne, Len and the rest of the crew.

4.1 Build 2312

I'm using a KUSB from Elecraft.

I re-installed 3.41 to see whether there had been a problem with the
first time I installed it, but the same symptoms are there.

I can't even send 8 dits (error) without a skipped dit! It makes it
impossible to send morse. When I try the straight key, it is hit and
miss whether I transmit or not with each character.

I just re-installed 3.30 and all is FB again!

I tried to log into the net, but propagation was terrible up here near
Cape Cod. I would hear an occasional voice surface through the noise
and don't know if anyone heard me calling.

Now that we are into EST rather than EDT there's more of a chance that
I'll be available to join the net.

Hope to QSO with you guys soon!

I was WV2LBV in 1960 and amazingly young at 16! Built the novice rig
featured in the Handbook (if I remember correctly) with a 6146 as both
oscillator and amp...a full 75 watts. It took crystals to make it work,
but I had to stay still in my chair, since body capacitance caused the
frequency to slide if I moved. Oh...when I built it, I kept blowing
rectifier tubes...until I learned the difference between a millihenry
and a microhenry. I was thrilled to have a "real" receiver, an SX-99.
Antenna was wrapped around the exterior (window to window) four stories
up on the apartment building where we lived. My first QSO was with
North Dakota and my knees were shaking so hard I almost couldn't
continue to handle the key!

[Elecraft] Getting to know K3-859

2008-05-04 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ
It's 0444 EDT and I think it's time to go to bed. I'm just short of the
first power on test and I'm going to get some rest before taking that
step. Tomorrow is another day.

I didn't realize that items of this quality were available to
"consumers". Fit and finish are remarkable. There's quality in
everything from button pushing feedback to structuring the assembly
process. I used to build some Heath and have written a few instruction
manuals along the way and this instruction set is really excellent.

I have only hit one snag so far: I received only 3 out of 4 #4 fiber
washers and I was short 3 screws. All but the washer were in the Spares
Kit. I'll be letting support know if or when I hit a road block. So
far...I'm having a whole lot of fun developing pride of ownership.

[Elecraft] Initial strangeness

2008-05-04 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ
It's been many years since even touching an HF radio (last one was
National NCX-3). Things that used to be familiar are now strange and
new again.

To wit...doing the first calibrations. The synthesizer cal appeared to
complete correctly, but when I hopped from band to band, there is a
momentary "ERR PL1" message at VFO B. I don't know if this is normal or
not.

I think I went through filter setup correctly, but when attempting the
Reference Oscillator Calibration my trip took me to an unfamiliar place.
While I don't have my antenna set up, yet. I connected a few feet of
wire to the ANT 1 input hoping to hear WWV or CHU, but no dice. What I
did hear on all bands were spurs or parasitics roaming around. There
were frequency sweeps that were VFO dependent and others that were
unaffected even when spinning the VFO dial.

Perhaps others have been here before and can give me a clue.

Thanks and good night!

[Elecraft] Something happened behind my back!

My K3 will not turn on. It was semi-alive last night. When I press the
"Power" button, the power supply meter reads about 2 amps and its
lighted meter glow brighter, but the K3 front panel lies lifeless.

I have been troubleshooting what appears to be a problem: when
attempting to calibrate the KSYN3 I repeatedly got VFO A: E5, VFO B:
ERR VCO at the test's conclusion. Pushing ahead I attempted to perform
the cal for KREF3 using the beat frequency method, but could not hear
any on the air signal that were recognizable. Instead there were
various signals roaming across the bandwidth. My first thought was to
use a better antenna, but later pulled the KSYN3 to check for lead
clearance and proper mating of the connector. All seemed ok, but the
radio wouldn't work. So I left it still giving me VCO errors and went
to bed. Just getting home I found the condition I mentioned above.

I'm not sure which direction to take, but I think I'll back off and
watch baseball before going through the schematics.

Wow! I was just fooling around, pushing multiple panel buttons when it
came alive! I thought that maybe there was a
backdoor/override-override...well I'm just speculating. Well it turns
on and off properly now, but I'll call Aptos tomorrow evening (EDT) and
see where else my journey takes me.

Thanks to those who gave me encouragement. This is a really nice list
to be a part of.

Hi Greg--

Yes, I've had luck (I'm not sure that it was skill) in getting my rig
going. I wound up removing the REF and SYN boards and remaking all the
coax connections. I then slipped my business card under each board to
verify clearance between the boards and the shield. When I powered up
again I started hearing traffic. While I was having my problem, the REF
and SYN boards were microphonic. That's why I remade the connections.
After the "repair" the circuits were quiet, the microphonics gone.

Another thing...when performing the VCO cal that led to error messages,
the radio went through each cal step lickety split. Once corrected the
steps were quite drawn out in some cases, but led to a right and proper
conclusion.

Right now I'm listening to the Red Sox. I have never been able to
listen to this station without lots of noise until hearing it with this K3.

Until yesterday morning, I hadn't gotten past the VCO test. It was
consistent with the following error messages:

E 5
ERR VCO

E 00255
ERR VC4

I ran the test this morning with no error message, however instead of
clicking along at a very good clip, it began with the word "busy" and
then a slow count up to cal 127 and then to frequency readout normally.
I can now hear traffic (net on 3.905 mc)!

Well then I got home this evening and found the K3 doa. When I push the
"Power" button, there's a bit of a draw on the power supply and I hear a
relay clicking, but the front panel will not light and no functions are
available. I tried going through the Theory in the manual and scoured
the schemagics, but can't figure out the power distribution architecture.

This bums me out since I finally got the REF and SYN to play nice and I
was getting into listening to ssb net traffic (and the ball game).

I have a call in to Aptos, but they're on the other coast and I think
they probably went home (if they have any sense). Does anyone on the
list have any ideas?

I started with DC. APP connectors are firm in their sockets and no
wiggling causes outages. When I installed the front panel, I was keenly
aware from list traffic that great care had to be taken during this
process. I looked at each connecting point of each connector. I've
also given the baby "therapeutic taps" to see if anything was loose.

Well I still have the turn on problem. After I read what I sent you
last, I thought better of taking the front panel connections for
granted, so after I got home from work tonight I removed the front panel
and exercised the various connections and put everything back together.

It wouldn't turn on. So I did some random gefinger poken and just as
randomly the radio turned on.

Let me review what I know about this nuisance:

1. When pushing the "Power" button, I hear a small relay click and my
power supply indicates that the rig is drawing about an amp.

2. However, no panel leds light and there is nothing on the LCD display.

3. No tapping, nudging, or any other "therapeutic" man handling of any
parts appears to improve the situation.

4. And then with a random push of the "Power" button...voila, the radio
comes to life.

5. I reloaded the firmware code a couple of times at least. I'm using
the KUSB adapter from Elecraft and it is running the latest driver from
Prolific.

I don't know what else to mention, but I'm afraid to turn the rig off

It doesn't appear to be flaky. Each an every time I press it, there is
a change of state of a relay somewhere in the rig, and each and every
time I press it, the power supply shows a draw of an amp or so. Its
just that each and every time I press the button the rig may or may not

After the MCU file loads and the radio resets, then upload the DSP1, FPF

Hi Folks--

I finally got to reading parts of the Owner's Manual and tried to set up
the rig to monitor my mic audio while in Test Mode. I can't get either
front panel Heil HM-Pro or rear panel Heil Proset 5 to pass audio. I
made sure I wasn't in Split and that the mode (USB) made sense.
Regardless of whether I'm set MAIN:FP or MAIN:rP.

Any ideas where to start first?

Ah Ha!!! I found my problem! The mics were set for low impedance
rather than high. I made the adjustment and I'm now modulating.
However, I find that my Heil phones really can't hear a monitor signal.
I can begin to hear myself if I crank up the compress to maximum
smoke...likewise the mic gain.

But bottom line is that I'm out of the woods and have a working radio.

Thanks for offering help to all.

David, there's so much to learn about this rig! The last hf rig I owned

[Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Problems

2008-05-24 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ

Hi all--

I've been having a terrific time getting to know #859. My antenna party
is tomorrow and I'll be on the air in a couple of days.

Last night while reading the mail, the front panel began flashing. The
LCD display lamp turned off, the LEDs flickered and turned off and I
lost control of the radio.

The rig was still receiving (the AF Gain control did still work), but I
couldn't change frequency or any other state of the K3 including the
ability to turn the power off.

I gave the box a therapeutic rap to see if anything was loose, but no,
it sounds absolutely solid. Within a few moments, all faculties
returned and I was able to power it down for the night.

Has anyone seen this before?

I started with DC. APP connectors are firm in their sockets and no
wiggling causes outages. When I installed the front panel, I was
keenly aware from list traffic that great care had to be taken
during this process. I looked at each connecting point of each
connector. I've also given the baby "therapeutic taps" to see if
anything was loose.

If you guys don't mind...its 2317 here and I rise at 0500 to pay

Well I still have the turn on problem. After I read what I sent you
last, I thought better of taking the front panel connections for
granted, so after I got home from work tonight I removed the front
panel and exercised the various connections and put everything back
together.

3. No tapping, nudging, or any other "therapeutic" man handling of
any parts appears to improve the situation.

4. And then with a random push of the "Power" button...voila, the
radio comes to life.

5. I reloaded the firmware code a couple of times at least. I'm
using the KUSB adapter from Elecraft and it is running the latest
driver from Prolific.

I don't know what else to mention, but I'm afraid to turn the rig off
because I'm afraid I'll never be able to turn it on again!

I cannot think of any good reason why this would be necessary, and as a
matter of policy one should reject software that shouldn't need to run
as root, but does actually need to. I think it is more likely that the
ttyUSB0 device node needs its permissions changing or accommodating to.

On Centos / RHEL /Fedora
Adding your user to the uucp group will give you access to the serial

ports.

to give your normal user access to the serial ports do the following as
root

usermod -a -G uucp

you can also do this with the GUI tool
system-config-users

this adds your normal user to the uucp group and gives your user access
to the serial ports so that you can run com port applications as a user
instead of root

you may need to log your user out and back in again for this to take
effect.

PS Note that Centos is a derivative, not a variant of Red Hat; Red Hat
would deny any responsibility for it.

Having recently completed some redhat training this is true, however the
redhat people work pretty closely with centos these days and Centos is
not seen as a rival.
Centos is based on the redhat Enterprise linux source code tree that
Redhat publish under the terms of the GPL.
Centos aims to be binary compatible with Redhat Enterprise linux

Red Hat commercialise open source
software by branding it and then charging for the use of the brand and
for support.

Redhat operate within the parameters of the GPL licence and contribute a
lot of paid for development resources to the linux codebase.
They sell a commercially supported product, it is the support, the
compiled binaries, Indemnity from litigation (SCO, MS etc) and branding
that you are buying, not 'linux'

CentOs remove the Red Hat branding and bypasses the
support contract that encumbers commercially supplied copies of Red Hat
Linux.

This is Something that the Centos people are perfectly entitled to do
under the terms of the GPL. You are are also able if you so wish to
download the entire RHEL source tree and rebuild your own binary
compatible version

Hi All--

The last you heard from me, I had just replaced the front panel to cure
a balky radio (wouldn't turn on). Well since replacing the front panel
this rig has proven to be very reliable...no unpleasant surprises.

The whole package really seems to me to be a great value. I just love
working with this radio. The choice of control positions works well for
me. But what truly enhances the value of this purchase is the top notch
level of support. I don't know too many corporations where a customer
in trouble can spend 20 minutes talking with the guy who designed the
product. But let me tell you that from my perspective, Wayne really
does stand behind this radio. And the aid offered by the denizens of
this mailing list is priceless. There is always something to learn and
always generous folk to help convey the knowledge.

The booth attracted a good steady crowd most of the day, with a number of

I didn't know. The company has 24 people, some of whom work from home. Even
Lyle and Gary are in different states. The company produces only ham radio

The manufacture of the K3 has been Eric's own responsibility and has been a

the order rate picks up. He said that there is now about a 3 1/2 months
backlog which he hopes to shrink to zero by the end of the year.
The kdvr3 are now in production with a number of finished boards, but are
waiting for firmware. No word on the timing of this.
The 6 meter preamp is very near ready and should be introduced in a few

The K2 continues to have interest and will be supported.

Ditto to much of what Bill wrote. I also had the pleasure of meeting

[Elecraft] [K3] ...and then there was silence (well almost)

2010-03-22 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Greetings fellow Elecrafters--

I was chasing RF in the shack, which had been causing cqrlog to lock up.
I was using the loudness of the hum coming out of my PC's outboard
stereo speakers to gauge how much raw RF there might be.

Well at one point the shack got very quiet and I thought that I might
have blown out the speakers. No...not the case. Here are the bottom
line symptoms:

Any change of band and the swr goes sky high upon keying. I hit the
"ATU Tune" and the ATU quickly reduces the swr from ohmigawd to less
than 2:1. The output power, which had taken a dive when the swr was
high, comes back to a dialed 100W. However, the Diamond SX-100 watt/swr
meter I keep in the line indicates that I'm transmitting almost 300W!
Naw...can't be.

Next major symptom: sensitivity is gone. Even the Boston big gun 5
Watt WBZ, up the road, is in the noise. I use MW to chase baseball games.

I have removed the wattmeter and my B&W LP filter as well as the surge
suppressor from the line so that nothing stands in the way of my path to
my Titan-DX vertical and the symptoms remain the same.

The symptoms barely change if I bypass the ATU. I have a sneaking
suspicion that I've blown the ATU and opened one side of the signal
path. That would explain the loss of sensitivity and possibly the
ridiculously high output power as indicated by the external wattmeter.
The on-board meters shows a proper 100W out.

I figured I'd throw this out there to the Elecraft Knowledge Base before
tearing the rig apart.

K3>>>Diamond SX-100 wattmeter>>>B&W Low Pass Filter>>>surge
suppressor>>>antenna feed to the world.

Re: [Elecraft] Intermod or mixing?

2010-06-12 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Mixing is a general term for combining any two or more signals through
the process of heterodyning.

Intermod is a specific form of mixing which combines harmonic products
of two RF signals: the desired receive signal and an undesired,
accidental signal, yielding a series of harmonically related RF
byproducts that can impair the receive pass band.

I hope I stated this correctly and that it helps to differentiate the
two terms adequately.

Regarding Intermod, I misspoke when stating that there was a harmonic
relationship. I meant to say a relationship between the sum and
difference frequencies that yield products up and down the band spaced
these difference frequencies.

Sorry,

I had S3 noise with barely SSB signals underneath, and those that I
could barely make out were at 14.313. Even with NR, I couldn't resolve
any signals to the point of understanding.

Hope to try again next week.

the FT-897 capabilities very well, and that's exactly how the K3 should
implement this. The FT-897 is the gold-standard model for how this
should be done, and all the VHF/UHF ops I've talked with about it agree.
I had extensive email correspondence with the K3 design team early on,
lobbying for implementation of this feature, and I was assured it will
be forthcoming.

This feature is addressed in the FAQ, which says, "These features will
not be in the initial firmware release, but should be available in the
second release. Exact functionality TBD." I don't think anybody knows
what this means. I sure don't. What is the "second release"? Haven't
there been many, many releases so far? Or does this mean "v2.xx"? If so,
when is that going to happen?

Can somebody at Elecraft let us know when this capability is expected to
be coded and implemented? It sure would be nice if it were in there by
the time I get my K3 in April/May, in time for the ARRL VHF QSO Party in
June.

[Elecraft] Isolation between Ant 1 and 2??

2009-01-02 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ

Hello and Happy New Year!!

Was doing some testing and discovered Ant 1 signal on Ant 2. Ant 1 is
my GAP Titan-DX and Ant 2 is a 100W dummy load.

I was just reading the mail on 75 meters and switched to Ant 2 to test
power. When key was off, I heard part of the QSO that was going on.
While on my dummy load, I was receiving a station S3, which on Ant 1 was
20 over S9.

Has anyone else seen this crosstalk? If so, what is considered
"acceptable"?

John King wrote:

Yep. I'm sure everyone that's tried it has.

Well, that's harder to answer and entirely dependent upon
your definition of acceptable. Clearly, the K3 wasn't designed
to provide high isolation between the antenna ports - just look
at the unshielded ANT1 and ANT2 leads in close proximity to each
other. If they had been concerned about isolation, these runs
would have been miniature coax (which you could easily install
yourself.)

In the scheme of things, though, the isolation isn't really
too bad. Let's take your case: S3 to S9+20. That's 56 dB of
isolation, which is about what one would expect from a typical
commercial amateur radio grade antenna switch (pay no attention
to the manufacturer's claims - I have measured them.) Isolation
values of 80 dB and up are common in expensive commercial and
military switches (Transco, Narda, etc.)

So, it depends. I knew the port-to-port isolation in my K3 was
going to be less than it could be when I built it. I though about
installing RG-174 in place of the bare wires, but decided not to.
I didn't see where it would buy me anything.

All in all, I love my K3. I'm an engineer, and I've been on the
air for over 40 years. The K3 is a real gem.

Thanks for your input, John. It had been quite a few years before
getting my K3 that I really had my hands in electronic gear. Once I
left the world of two-way radio component-level troubleshooting and
repair work and migrated into microwave radio system-level maintenance
parts of my brain must have atrophied. 56 db really does seem adequate
after all. It all really does have to do with perspective.

By the way...I love my K3! Regardless of the era of ownership (last HF
rig=National NCX-3), it is the finest piece of electronics I've ever owned.

[Elecraft] OT: Pets in the Shack

2012-08-09 Thread Dick Roth--KA1OZ
I have two furry family members who often visit me when I'm
operating...and often come into the shack when I'm not there.
Naturally, being cats, they climb all over the place including my
operating position.

Heres a tip: if you leave your radio on when you aren't present, engage
"Tx TEST" to prevent accidental carrier transmission if they want to try
out their fists on your keys.

Sure, I could shut the station off, but I tend to cling to my old ways
when I used hollow state gear (last rig before the K3 was a National
NCX-3) and it required long warm-ups.

Re: [Elecraft] FCC exams

2012-08-29 Thread Dick Roth--KA1OZ
Going up to the Custom House in the oldest part of Boston was always
faced with great trepidation. The FCC examiners were men of very few
words. They just passed out the written exams and turned on the
terrifying Code Machine and didn't say much else!

I had to visit the place three times to pass my 2nd Phone (now GROL)
exam because I couldn't make it past Question 70 before having to excuse
myself to visit the Men's Room. Naturally, that was that...no re-entry.
It finally dawned on me not to drink anything from the night before and
to forgo my morning coffee. Hopefully, I've learned how to grasp the
obvious more quickly since then.

[Elecraft] K3--Digital Mode Question (New Tricks...Old Dog)

2012-09-01 Thread Dick Roth--KA1OZ
Finally waded into digital modes with FLdigi, but have a K3 question
regarding Line Out control. From what I could tell from the manual,
Line Out to my PC ought to be a level adjusted by Config: Line Out.
However, each time I turned down the AF control, the signal to FLdigi
went away. What am I missing? (I'd like to operate without the constant
whine of PSK ringing in the shack.)

Any help in clearing this up will be much appreciated!

2012-09-02 Thread Dick Roth--KA1OZ
Iain and Elecrafters--

Thank you for your responses and guidance! Iain hit the nail on the
head with his third possibility...audio into a microphone! I was using
a never before used sound system built-in to the motherboard and had the
incorrect gain control (microphone) turned up instead of the Line In.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SHUTDOWN.

2012-09-29 Thread Dick Roth--KA1OZ
I noticed that you said you were running at 100W. That may be your
problem. RTTY is a 100% duty cycle mode and I believe your rig may be
overheating to the point of self-protection (shutdown).

When I run data modes, I normally reduce power to 25W. I have never had
the same problem you describe.

Re: [Elecraft] Improving the station while waiting for the K3

2007-11-25 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ
Actually, I'm just getting back on track with my hobby after 30 years or
so away from HF (haven't even been on 2m for many months!). I've never
had a shack in this house, so I'm starting from scratch. Besides my K3
order, I've been sending coupons to HRO for stuff including an Astron
SS-30M supply. I'm contemplating getting a GAP Challenger vertical and
am still trying to figure out whether I'm planting it on the ground or
flying it on the roof. The new safety rules require substantial steps
be taken to protect neighbors and their errant pets, so I'm looking for
the best compromise amongst performance, safety, cost and effort.

The last time I had a shack, it was in a walk-in closet, with a dipole
strung between our livingroom and bedroom. This time, I've got to
figure the best way to get cables into the house.

I'm talking back to basics here!!

Well, I've consumed more than my share of bandwidth. Everyone have a
terrific day.

[Elecraft] Is there a way to use keyer without transmitting?

2007-12-19 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ

Hi List--

In anticipation of receiving my K3 sometime this spring (I only just
ordered it a couple of weeks ago), I bought a Bencher paddle. I've
never used an electronic keyer or bug, for that matter. I haven't been
on HF for over thirty years!

Is there a way to use the keyer in the radio to learn and practice
proper paddle use?

[Elecraft] Regarding mics for K3

2007-12-29 Thread Dick Roth KA1OZ

Hi there--

Since folk are offering opinions, I've just bought a Heil HM-Pro Handi
Mic. I meant to get the HM-5. Does anyone have a good opinion? It has
a 6kc bandwidth. Would the TX equalizer be able to handle this? Also,
I believe the Z=600 ohms.

Returning it is a 100 mile drive to Salem, NH.

tia.

Competing with viscous, vulgar qrm. I doubt that the foul-mouthed idiot
