Re: [Elecraft] K4 missing features, was OT: The 4-track mind
I got tired of waiting for special subtraction NR and decided to do something about the lousy K4 NR on SSB. I bought the BHI Dual Inline NR module and the results are impressive. I will publish a video soon. Anyone who says that better NR won't help you make more weak signal contacts, especially if you're in the big city, doesn't know what they are talking about on this subject. That plus the decreased fatigue factor... The last thing we heard from Wayne about missing features was that the Remote Software would be released as Beta in Q1 2024. Every other ask about other features has been met with radio silence for months. Expect more of the same at this point. Tim On Sun, Dec 10, 2023, 11:34 AM George Danner wrote: > 4. Re: [Elecraft] External Preamp & RX ANT IN/OUT
I do this with the MFJ 1026 in between the RX IN/OUT. I can use the 1026 preamp by itself with the RX ANT gain turned to zero or I can put the RX antenna in line for dual VFO/Band RX or use as a diversity RX setup. There is another thread about the effectiveness of diversity RX - I was playing around with this setup last nite on 20m (propagation was pretty good) and was hearing stations from HI to the East coast on the 80m RX loop almost as good as the inverted V and some were better. Plus, this setup gives me the option to null out unwanted interference and on lower bands (40m seems most effective) reduce QSB. I never obtained the updated Elecraft version, but I would be very (pleasantly) surprised if it could match the performance of a well designed heat sink such as these. https://www.worldwidedx.com/threads/cooler-kx-plus-heatsink-for-elecraft-kx3-installation-video.179532/ Tim On Mon, Jun 13, 2022 at 8:21 PM Jim Brown wrote: > On 6/13/2022 7:36 PM, Eric Norris wrote: > > How difficult is it to install the later factory heatsink on an early > KX3? > > Very easy. > > 73, Jim K9YC > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to ae...@worldwidedx.com > -- Owner, worldwidedx.com AE6LX, Amateur Radio __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service
I don't think many of us would be happy with the change in pricing if Elecraft were to guarantee the ability to replace and repair radios for a long period of time. Many electronic components go "end of life" very quickly. Some percentage of those parts will break over the life of a product. For a manufacturer to state they will repair a given product for, let's say, ten years, they would have to estimate the failures likely to occur and the parts needed to make those repairs up front. Then they have to buy, inventory, and safely store all of those parts for ten years after the last model comes off the production line. That cost is non-trivial and is ultimately borne by the customer who may need those parts one day. This is why an engine controller for your car may cost thousands of dollars even though it only has a hundred bucks worth of components. They also take into account that they may never sell those parts they will store for years. The customer ultimately pays for a lot of that as well. If there was a promise they could be repaired for a specified period of time, none of us might be able to afford a KX or K series transceiver. This is life in the age of electronics. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service
Supporting out of production products can require a lot of money and effort. I'm not going to advise Elecraft how to run their business but I think Flex, one of their worthy competitors, transitions repairs to qualified 3rd party companies when they stop production of older models. This provides a continuous support system for loyal owners and keeps the developers working on current and new products. Seems good for both the company and customers. I sure hope there never comes a time when I cannot repair my beloved KX2 through Elecraft or another capable outfit. [Elecraft] K4 Notch AM doesn't work?
I just got the K4D up and running. This morning I tuned to the local AM broadcast station I listen to, which often has an annoying tone right on frequency (The K3S heard it, too). With the K3, I would just manually notch it out. With the K4, I turn on manual notch, spin the notch frequency dial, but nothing happens. From memory, the interfering tone is around 2Hz, but I can't seem to make it work on AM. Is this a feature that isn't quite working on AM as expected yet? [Elecraft] Elecraft -- tarnished, bent and broken crown
Elecraft - Tarnished, bent and broken crown. For many years I believed Elecraft was king. Now I'm not so sure. I purchased a KPA500 and KAT500. I assumed with all the trouble, protective, and shutdown circuits they would last a long time and probably never need service. The Elecraft service tech erroneously advise me to ship it to Calif when it would not transmit which cost $71. Turn out to be an interface cable and not the amp. The amp didn't need to be shipped. I had to pay $67 for another cable which should have been warranted. Some months past and the amp wouldn't transmit again. An Elecraft services tech advised me to ship it back to calif since it was under warrantee. This time the shipper charged $140 because the nursing home where I live was required to ship it commercial and insured. The tech could have suggest the obviously burned resister be replaced. I have been a ham for over 50 years. I had a SB-220 for over 40 years and never had to disassemble it for repairs. I've owned Yaesu's, Icom's and Alinco's, all new, and never had ship any of them for repairs or even repair them after years of use. I have always heard only praise for Elecraft product. There are less costly tuners and amps on the market but I believed Elecraft would be the most durable and reliable. Before I purchase another Elecraft product I will do even more research and comparisons. 73, Tim WB8HRO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Configuring DXLabs Suite, Win4K3 and K3 for FT8 etc.
If you're just going to use WSJT-X (or JTDX, which is what I use) for non-contest / casual operation on the main FT8 frequencies, I don't think using the split/fake-it option is necessary. Contesting is a different thing. To get started with casual use, just use the TX/RX split option on the main UI. I've also had mixed results using JDTX with a serial pairing emulator (I use Eterlogic, but have tried several) and Win4K3. It mostly works fine, but I have noticed that over time the TX/RX timing sequence starts to become "off"...I've only done light troubleshooting on this so far, but I know it's not a CPU horsepower problem. So when I'm doing JTDX, I usually just use the HRDLogbook host and leave Win4K3 shut down. My 2C. Re: [Elecraft] K4 video - what display is in use
Another example of why having USB-C output on the K4 would be extremely beneficial. One USB-C cable to the external screen would supply not only video and power, but could enable touch screen capabilities, allowing the user to control the rig from the much larger screen if desired. I'm not sure if any code changes would even be needed to enable the touch screen support, since the rig already supports it on its internal screen. As it stands, you could probably get the touch screen to work using a USB/USBC adapter, but now you've got 3 cables for that external screen instead of one. I really hope Elecraft gets the USB-C upgrade into the backlog soon. Tim On Thu, Aug 19, 2021 at 2:32 PM Dave Van Wallaghen wrote: > It is a Niuto 14" TouchPad. [Elecraft] K3 ANT1 / ANT2 switching
Hi, I have acquired a second-hand K3/100 with the Auto ATU and 2nd receiver, which I have been checking out, calibrating and installing extra filters. Everything has worked exactly as expected, until I tried to use an antenna connected to ANT2 socket. I have a fan dipole connected to ANT1, and a 50 Ohm dummy load to ANT2. When I press the ANT button with the AUTO ATU in Bypass, there's a click, and the annunciation changes from ANT1 to ANT2, but I can still hear signals just as loud, even though there a dummy load on ANT2. Also If I transmit, it doesn't matter whether I have ANT1 or ANT2 selected, RF always comes out of ANT1 socket. If I have the ATU activated, the symptoms are exactly the same, except when I switch from ANT1 to ANT2 there's no click. The Auto ATU works fine, and I have the KRX3 "ANT=bnc" set. I can also hear stations on the 2nd receiver through the ANT1 socket or via AUX antenna socket. The firmware has been updated to the latest versions for MCU, FPF, and both DSP units. Any help would be most welcome. 73 de Tim G4ARI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K4D #150
I use a Heil GM5 mic, with the gain and compression adjusted so my lips have to be almost touching the windscreen to drive the rig. When a fan blower from a big amp is going right underneath the rig, there is a limit to gain and compression adjustments that can be made to get rid of that much background noise. Plus a room with hard floors makes the problem worse (although I do have throw rug down). This is the type of environment where downward expansion shines. Phase Inversion: Perhaps I wasn't clear: For some reason with my setup, this Heil GM5 mic produces negative deflection on a power meter when using AM. Example: you set the AM carrier at 25 watts, expecting modulation to 100 watts, but instead you observe 25 watts deflecting to 15 watts. I don't know why that occurs, but I do know that flipping the Invert phase switch solves the problem. [Elecraft] K3 MCU 5.93??
I just received the K3 AUX cable for the KPA1500. The manual makes references to needing K3 MCU 5.93 or later for some of the features. But the latest MCU available on the Elecraft website is 5.67...I even checked the FTP for beta versions. Does anyone have any insight on where to obtain this version of the K3 MCU? Re: [Elecraft] Are external tuners really needed with Chamaeleon antennas?
Since noone has actually answered the specific question... A few years ago, I was told by the Owner of Chamelon that the CHA Hybrid-Micro used in that kit as the base & matching unit is 5:1 Unun. The manual of the kit has an SWR plot for various types of radiating elements that can be used: the vertical, vertical with extension, a length of wire, etc. Whether or not a tuner is required to obtain an acceptable SWR is going to depend a lot on what you intend to use for the radiating element. If you're planning on using the antenna with one of the vertical elements on 40m, you're going to need to use the tuner in the KX2...which will just fine. The folks who have commented about using just a wire and binding post as the preferred setup are not taking into considerations the various operating environments that someone might be in. I frequent desert and mountainous areas in SoCal that have no trees or bushes of any meaningful height. In those cases, using a man-pack type of vertical (like the Chameleon) is a very convenient antenna to use with a KX2 or KX3. Re: [Elecraft] Help with the KX3 and FT8
Using FT8 with the KX3 is pretty simple. I've used it with both the standard USB and USB DATA A mode. Hook it up just like any other digital mode, adjust the volume on the rig and level out on the PC, look at the meter settings in the software and make contacts. Don't make it more complicated than it is - try it, adjust, and have fun. [Elecraft] KPA500 Port problem
I live in a nursing home and am mobility impaired and must control my KPA500 with my computer. I saved for over a year for the amp. My KPA500 will stay connect to my computer for <2 min and the Utility locks up and the only way to get it to load again is to re-boot the computer. The error messages I receive all say the port is in use which it is not. I have uninstalled and re-install the FTID comport driver many times. The baud rate of 38400 for both computer and amp. I have downgraded and up graded the firmware. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Thoughts on MFJ-1026 or any other phasing box
I have one and also have a small horizontal receiving loop around the perimeter of the property with the intended purpose of picking noise generated by the neighbors' stuff. The MJF unit works if you can adequately pick up the noise through the receive antenna. I made a video of it that I put on youtube, but the video actually turned out pretty poorly because you just can't hear the noise I was demonstrating eliminating in the video. Oh well. When I originally put this in, I was using it to eliminate both a rogue plasma tv and also the neighbor's pool pump. Both of the offending devices have since been replaced so I don't use the MFJ 1026 as much, but it's definitely a nice tool to have in the box. I have kicked around the idea of putting up an active receive antenna for it but am concerned that I won't be able to place that antenna far enough away from my regular HF antenna with legal limit usage. I've always thought that this type of functionality could be built into the K3/K4 since it already has a separate RX input. Maybe Elecraft would consider it in a future OS upgrade feature for the K4? Re: [Elecraft] Firmware development
The point on Moore's law is taken. But the options aren't just limited to Elecraft doing more work on older radios or no updates at all (or supporting the old radios to the detriment of the new) Many software development projects now are community based and although radio firmware may be more time-consuming and more complex than OpenWRT for example, community based development may have more umph than Elecraft might have as far as inclination to tweak old radios. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware development
Tim, I'm an owner of 3 Elecraft radios and am a huge fan of the products. But one thing that the last few years has shown is that Elecraft does not have a great track record of developing new features or technologies into their existing transceiver products. They release updates and patches for various issues, and certainly did release new features early on for the K3, but a lot of the ideas the community suggested went unanswered. I understand why this is, and hope that it will change with the K4, but ultimately the K3, KX3, and KX2 are largely the same product that they have been for the last several years. Re: [Elecraft] KX2 External battery question
I often operate my KX2 from the internal battery. As a "backup" source I frequently just take a second KXBT2 along. When you plug it into the external power jack the KX2 will draw it's power from the pack with the higher voltage. Tim N9PUZ On 11/6/2020 6:56 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: I would definitely *not* use the KXBC2 charger with anything but a KXBT2, or an exact equivalent pack, for safety reasons. The voltages and currents are targeted specifically at 3 Li-Ion cells (11 V). Just to give you another [probably biased, beware] opinion on the KXBT2, though: The internal battery isn't just about powering the radio, it's about mobility. It facilitates the kind of adventurous, ad-hoc, pedestrian mobile operation that many KX2 users engage in. (Speaking strictly for me :) As a battery, the KXBC2 has proven safe and reliable by thousands of users. It's about 2.5 AH at 11 V, considerably higher in energy density than the battery packs in its closest competitors. I typically get 2 or 3 hours of hunt 'n' pounce operation at 10 watts. Eventually the radio will drop power to 5 W and carry on for another 2 to 3 hours. 73, Wayne N6KR On Nov 6, 2020, at 4:26 PM, Rich NE1EE <73.de.ne...@gmail.com> wrote: Hi Bob, Well, to get the ball rolling, I'd say no to the KXBC2. And I recall being surprised by someone writing about a specific Li-ion battery that they got good service from. I don't usually vote for that technology, but the OP had good luck with it. My opinion, tech-based, but still my interpretation of the data, is that Li batteries are generally over-charged, leading to hazard conditions, especially for lower quality batteries, and much shorter battery life. The 12V Bioenno batteries have an internal battery management circuit. They require 14.6 - 15 Volts input to charge properly. Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Antenna Curiosity
If you are talking about a single band dipole then any half wave dipole cut to the standard formula and fed with good quality coax should work well. If you want a "multi band" dipole then I would recommend cutting it for the lowest frequency you plan to operate and feeding it with balanced line. Even the best coax can have a lot of loss under high SWR conditions (between your tuner and the antenna feedpoint) whereas even at 1 10:1 SWR balanced line does not have much loss. The radiation pattern of a multi band configuration can vary a lot from band to band. The end fed wire you describe is not specific to the KX2. You typically want the longest wire possible that is NOT a half wavelength or even multiple on any band you want to operate. The main reason for this is when a wire is a half wave or an even multiple the impedance at the end of the wire can be very high and it is more difficult for most tuners to obtain a match there. By it NOT being a half wave, the impedance is lower and a wide range tuner like the one in your KX2 can match it more easily and present the proper impedance to the radio. Here is an article that suggests good lengths for a "random wire" antenna. The lengths aren't really very random, they are specifically chosen to be easier to match. At 58.5 feet you arrived at one of the good lengths. <https://udel.edu/~mm/ham/randomWire/> Tim N9PUZ On Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 11:03 AM Joseph Shuman via Elecraft < elecraft@mailman.qth.net> wrote: > I have had my KX2 with the ATU for about 10 months and operate on 40m QRP > SSB from various locations. Re: [Elecraft] KX2 KXIO2 RTC Adjustment
Thank you Don and Richard. The KXIO2 clock is working properly again. I do not know if it was one of the things below or the combination of all of them but I'll share what I did in hopes it might help someone else. My KX2 was purchased used so I do not know if it was assembled by the original owner or by Elecraft. Step 1: I removed external power and the internal battery. Then I let the radio sit for a couple of days so the backup cap could discharge and things would really be "off". Step 2: I removed the KXIO2 board using the installation instructions as a guide. I carefully applied a small amount of DeoxIT "D Series" cleaner to the contacts on the four headers. (Use VERY little, I could barely see that I had applied any.) This was in case there might be any small amount of corrosion that was not visible. Step 3: I reassembled everything, put the battery back in and connected external power. Then, I used the KX2 utility program to set the clock to match my PC with the "calibration value set to "0". I turned the radio off. Step 4: About a day or so later I compared the two times. The KX2 was a few seconds fast so I bumped the calibration to "1". Having done all of that the radio seems to be about a minute fast after a week. Plenty good enough for me and well within what Elecraft claims it should do. Tim N9PUZ On 8/26/2018 11:00 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Tim, I would suggest trying again to recalibrate it. The recalibration can be a long process of trial and error with the results measured over several days. That is a lot less expensive than buying a new one or sending it to Elecraft. I do not expect the long term accuracy of any rig's real time clock to be correct over a period of days. Even gaining a minute a day is sufficient for logging during an outing. Actually, I do not use it, I use the Timex on my wrist for accurate timekeeping, and it is easier for me than pulling up the RTC display on the KX2 when doing paper logging. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/25/2018 5:20 PM, Tim McDonough N9PUZ wrote: I have a KX2 with the internal tuner and the KXIO2 clock module which I purchased used and it is long out of warranty. Re: [Elecraft] Boldly OT: 6 meter Sporadic-E season and the FT-8 microjuggernaut
I can appreciate the technology behind modes such as FT-8 but for me, regardless of whether it be CW, Phone, or a digital mode a meaningful QSO results in me knowing some small amount of information about another ham that I didn't know otherwise. Clicking on a call sign and then, mostly automatically, having the computers complete the QSO just doesn't get my motor running. [Elecraft] Deactivate the sub receiver
There's a possibility my K3 may be used in a multi op setting where many of the users would not be familiar with the K3. I'm trying to think of ways to simplify the operation so that those not familiar with the controls don't accidentally put it into some dysfunctional configuration. Specifically, is there a way to disable the sub receiver? I looked for something in the Config menu but did not find anything relevant. I suppose I could remove it but that seems drastic.
