Re: [Elecraft] An alternate to USB/Serial converter?
Yes I have used a lot of the PCMCIA ones on my DELL/IBM Thinkpad laptops over the last 10 years. The laptops come with one serial port, but I use the PCMCIA card to give me one or 2 more for FSK, rotator control, PA control etc I use the socket communications Inc versions, see http://www.socketserial.com/support/Cards/CFandPC%20Card%20Datasheet.pdf. Some of their older version single and dual PCMCIA serial cards (circa 1997) have been going for as little as $5 each recently Dave ww2r -- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2010 10:40:33 -0600 From: David Christ Subject: [Elecraft] An alternate to USB/Serial converter? Re: [Elecraft] WriteLog contest software
I have been using writelog with (multiple) K3 for a while and have been pleased with the performance. I am even happier now they support SO2V operation more fully with a K3; when you decode rtty on the main rx and the sub receiver at the same time (with a suitable soundcard) there are now two frequency entry windows and it will transmit on the one that has focus. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Synthesizer Stiffener Plate Mod
There must be some point, as putting it on the sub vco is still mentioned in multiple places on the elecraft web site... from http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K3 Parts:- "K3STFNR K3 Synthesizer Stiffener Plate Kit Included on all new K3s (***one ea. per synthesizer board***)" and http://www.elecraft.com/manual/ELECRAFT%20KSYN3%20Stiffener%20Mod%20Rev%20D. pdf "If your K3 is equipped with the KRX3 subreceiver it will have two KSYN3 synthesizers. Both boards should bemodified if the user chooses to make this modification". As you say you only transmit on the "main VCO" so putting the shield on the main vco would deal with speaker rumble issue so putting it on the subvco maybe to improve shielding? [Elecraft] K3 swr readings on 10m
Interestingly while over in england for the weekend installing My wifes K3 I had a similar experience I was interfacing the new DEMI 70MHz transverter which needed 5W drive at 10m So i set up the transverter to use the antenna 1 connector. When producing 5W the K3 thought the SWR was 4.5 to 1. Inserting an swr meter between K3 and xverter showed that the swr was 1.1:1 as an experiment I engaged the atu, which not surprisingly convinced the k3 the swr was 1:1. The swr meter still showed 1.1:1 I then put the ATU into bypass mode and this time it showed swr of 1.1:1 rather than 4.5:1, which didnt make sense Dave G4FRE > > Message: 10 > Date: Wed, 5 May 2010 14:31:29 +0100 > From: "Geoffrey Downs" > Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - SWR on Tx Gain Calibration > To: > Message-ID: > Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; > reply-type=original > > For some time I've been puzzled that, when doing a TX gain calibration > either manually or with the utility, the SWR displayed was 1.0:1 on all > bands except for 10m where it was 1.5:1. I have been pushing for this for a long time as it would be nice to be able to feed my 10MHz Rubidium standard into J3 to get near precise calibration. I suspect that the problem is due to the internal reference oscillator of all our K3s being different. Although the KREF3 schematic shows the oscillator to be on 49.380 MHz, we all adjust this during the K3 calibration procedure. Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500 HV Problem.
I recently had the same error on my kpa500 recently. Investigation revealed the PSU board multiplier could produce 210V OFF LOAD with the PSU>LPF jumper disconnected but only 60v when the jumper was connected. Simulating the pin diode current consumption with a resistor also produced the same result. Turned out that R16 which should have been 100 ohm was now 1.2Mohm. Replacing it fixed that problem While talking to elecraft support it transpired that there was an upgrade kit (E850607) that replaces the Q5 FET on the LPF board with a transistor (as usual no reference could be found to it on the elecraft web site!). Re: [Elecraft] Titanic radio traffic link
Titanic while under construction used the callsign MUC. It didnt start using MGY till it set sail. MGY was previously assigned to the "US vessel Yale" see http://www.hf.ro/ The 1st letter "M" indicated a Marconi installation...Marconi issued the callsigns! For an interesting account of Artie Moore who received the titanics signals in south wales on his hb rx , reported it to the police who dismissed his reports until 2 days later (when the story hit thr local press) see http://www.gb100ggm.co.uk/. I will visit the GB100GGM site tomorrow Dave ww2r, g4fre From: Nate Bargmann Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Titanic radio traffic link To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: <20120413010804.gb6...@n0nb.us> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii In addition to the link provided by the OP, here are a couple more gleaned from a thread in the News forum at QRZ.com: IEEE: http://spectrum.ieee.org/static/the-titanics-role-in-radio-reform A short film: http://www.youtube.com/jkilts Look for the "Last Signals" video. It is a movie portrayal of Jack and Harold. For whatever reason the Titanic's call of MGY (IEEE seems to have gotten it incorrect as MQY in the article above) made perfect sense as it was a UK flagged vessel. I was reminded of mention that the "M" stood for Marconi in a later post. 1912 was long before internationally allocated radio prefixes. Oops! In response to the BBC verbalizing of the Morse messages I posted: Nicely done! What was left unsaid, and likely not germane to the story of the sinking of Titanic, is that the actions of too many of the amateurs and competing wireless companies' operators that night and in the aftermath led directly to radio licensing. In the USA the Radio Law of 1912 established the federal government's authority over all things wireless and banished the amateurs to a wavelength of 200 Meters. It also required that prospective radio amateurs pass an examination and receive an operator's and station license from the Department of Commerce. The law had the consequence of cutting the number of amateur stations drastically but also eliminated the free-for-all days of wireless. It also had a few other unintended effects as well--official recognition of amateur radio and rather than killing off amateur radio as originally intended, it resulted in the eventual discovery of our presently known shortwave spectrum along with the drive toward CW replacing spark as the latter was more difficult to use on the higher frequencies. So while I salute those earliest radio amateurs, our service as we know it was truly born as a result of the tragic loss of the Titanic. 73, de Nate, N0NB >> ______ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K1 For Sale
This K1 is a GREAT radio. I'm always impressed by it when I've taken it out camping, or on field day, or when I'm at home. The ATU matches just about anything you can put in the trees! This is a 2-band version (70Khz band spread - can be changed to 150Khz) (20 and 40 mtrs installed) with an extra KFL1-2 Two-Band board (for 15 and 30 mtrs). It has the KAT1 Internal Automatic Antenna Tuner (ATU), KBT1 Internal Battery Adapter, KNB1 Noise Blanker, KTS1 Wide-Range Tilt Stand and the FDIMP FingerDimple. I also have the K1BKLTKIT K1 Back light kit but it's not yet built and installed. The power cord has Anderson power poles. The original manual is also included. I also have the original speaker/case top that was replaced when the KBT1 internal battery adapter was installed. This radio is in excellent physical shape and operates as good as it looks. I'd like to get $490 plus shipping (est $23 w/ins) Current price list for all this is $676.60. Is it possible to configure one of the transverter bands on the K3 to enable the K144XV (with its associated 28MHz IF), then use the 144MHz output from there (via the ANT3 socket, I'm guessing) to drive an external 23cm transverter, and show the appropriate 1296MHz frequency on the K3's display? (This whilst maintaining another transverter band just for "normal" 144MHz operation.) Being able to assert one of the external transverter control lines at the same time would be an additional bonus! [Elecraft] [K1] Unusual ATU Problem
Hi Guys! I wonder if you can help with a bewildering problem please? I have a K1 with a 4 band board (40, 30, 20, 15m) and the internal ATU. All function perfectly and match to an inverted Vee cut for 30m. On 30m my analyser shows a Vswr of around 1.1-1.3. I have recently added a 2 band board for 80/30m with the same Elecraft ATU. The ATU matches 80m to the same antenna with no problems. However when I activate tune or key up with the 30m part of the board, strange things happen. The screen goes clear, the following lights show in sequence: Attn light fashes - green RIT - red RIT - some relay chatter - Attn light - Display resumes. If a power meter is installed in line with the antenna feed, the same sequence occurs and no power registers. It gets stranger...! If I connect the K1 directly to a dummy load the ATU tunes up as normal. No problem. If I put a 1:1 or 2:1 balun in series with the antenna the problem occurs but if I put a 4:1 balun in series it works just fine. I have remelted every solder joint on the board and checked no components on the board are touching above or below. Without the ATU the board provides 5W to the antenna on 30m easily. If I pop back the 4-band board and ATU combination, 30m works via the tuner with no problems at all. I am bewildered and perplexed. Any ideas would be much appreciated. [Elecraft] K1-2 No TX on one band
Hello Detrick, I had a very similar problem with my K1 (also a Christmas present Dec. 2006). In my case it was the 20 Meter band. I opted for the four band set up. I found no Tx at all on 20m despite all the tests and adjustments. The culprit was the band crystal which was defective. An easy way to check this is to listen out for the oscillation of the crystal at the frequency marked on the crystal. Remove the cover from the K1. Use another rig with a piece of wire for an antenna drapped near the suspect K1 and switch in your pre-amp on the monitoring rig. DO NOT transmit using the K1 but simply select the band of choice. First try out the 80m band and listen for the crystal on 11.0500 MHz (or round about). Turn the K1 on and off to confirm you are hearing the crystal and not something else. Now listen for the 15m crystal by selecting the 15m band and listening for the crystal on 29.000 MHz (I can hear my crystal on 28.995 MHz but my Icom might be a bit off frequency). If you cannot hear the crystal (and it is very noticeable), then the crystal is probably suspect. A few things to check: 1) Solder has not bonded properly to one or both leads. 2) Solder has flowed along a lead and earthed it to the case. 3) Too much heat was applied to the crystal when soldering the case to ground and it is now dead. 4) The crystal was already defective. I hope this is some help to you. 73's Steve M0ECS K1 # 2294 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K1 Acting up on 20M and 30M
I have K1 SN950 with the 4 band module, Antenna Tuner and battery module. It has been working like a champ for 3 years. Now, it has decided it does not want to transmit on 20 meters and weakly on 30M. Radio works fine on all other bands. Radio receives fine on all bands. When I attempt to tune on 20M, it fails to get a match, drops power to 0.1 (no matter how high I initially set it) and reports "Plo". If I go in and check the SWR from the last tune (rx.x) it reports r0.0. On 30M I do get a tune, I get a reported SWR of r9.9. If I check the antenna with a SWR Analyzer, it reports that the antenna is about 1.7 at the frequency I am trying to use on 20M and about 2.1 on 30M. I put a power meter in line with the radio: It reports near zero output on 20M, about half power on 30M and appropriate power on all other bands. If I swap out the antenna and put in a dummy load, the meter shows R6.3 and about half power on 30M, and Plo again and no measurable output on 20 M. I manually cycle through all the relays --- per the troubleshooting guide --- and they all are clicking --- none appear to be hung or dead. Any Ideas? It would be even easier if one could use a 10MHz IF for LF. For this the K3 and KX3 (when the code is written) xverter settings could be set to XVRF=0MHz XVIF=10MHz. Lance pretty much wrote the book on this niche, so it's not surprising that he went to extremes, rolling his own heatsink to reduce the RX-TX frequency shift to just a few Hz on 6 meters. He also used our new temperature-compensation procedure. I admire Lance's dedication to this pursuit--and put a lot of time in on it myself. But I wanted to point out that supplemental heatsinking of the KX3 is *not* needed for typical digital-mode operation with the KX3. PSK31, RTTY, etc. will all function "out of the box" on the lower bands (20 meters is by far the most common band for digital communications). If you want to use JT65 or other extremely narrowband modes, I do suggest doing extended VFO temperature compensation. There's a procedure for this on our KX3 page, and if you don't have a very stable signal source, you can use our new XG50 RF generator. 73, Wayne N6KR ______ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I went to build doublets in the same space and I still keep an 80m doublet in the air. Recently I have gotten into building no compromise rotatable dipoles. By no compromise I mean full sized monoband rotatable dipoles - no traps, coils or cap hats 1/2 wave off the ground in free space. These are relatively easy to build without a huge tower if you keep the weight down. That’s not too hard to do without a boom to support the parisitic elements. Great bang for the buck. Re: [Elecraft] Windows Emulator
Hello All, I didn’t read through all the responses, so apologies if this is duplicated. After running several emulators and not liking them much, I went with Apple’s Boot Camp and prefer it over anything else I’ve tried. It has been much more reliable for me. I use both OSs almost every day on the shack computer. Windows for amateur radio and the Mac OS for all my weather station data. The only problem is that the clock needs to be reset every time I launch Windows after the Mac OS. I know it is something in the registry but I am too Windows ignorant to fix it. Re: [Elecraft] OT Rotatable Dipole Project
Thanks for the flowers Ron. The one compromise I ended up making was not getting the aluminum up a full half wave in the air. Fully half the directionality is down a steep hill, so electrically it meets that criteria. However the other half is back into the hillside so in that direction not so much. It has still been a very worthwhile pursuit. This antenna beats my 80m @ .5 wave doublet multiband antenna. I hope this has been helpful. 73 de Eric, KG6MZS > On Oct 14, 2016, at 7:43 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: > > A rotatable dipoles offer an advantage when > they are up high enough (>1/2 wavelength) to provide significant > directivity. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Of course you can operate the K3 in low power transceive on any frequency from 490-KHz to 32-MHz if in the TEST mode. Only issue is VFO readout is the IF and not the operating frequency of a converter or transverter. But say you use 3.472-3.478 MHz as your IF? Your LO would be 3.000 MHz. This could even be a DDS oscillator locked to a 10-MHz reference. A simple mixer and LO without filters would work 0-500 KHz (maybe). The wider issue if using other ham transceivers that only operate in the ham bands. My K3 has the EXREF board for referencing to an external 10-MHz source. This enables 0.1 ppm accuracy. Feedline length, routing and balun issues, while simple for me to solve now, were just too much for me to solve in the beginning. The G5RV got me on 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 40, 60 and 80 all at once. Admittedly not very well on all, but I made contacts on all those bands. Lance Having tried the K3 with the high spec oscillator and with the external locking I found I needed the external locking for my 144 digimode qsos. I have a K3 with the optional high stability reference oscillator option. I have been very pleased with the frequency stability of the unit up through 6m. Next month I am interested in ordering the K144XV so I can also use the rig for 2m EME with JT65B mode. Is there anyone out there currently using such a setup successfully on 2m EME? Is it stable enough as-is, or will I need to also add the K3EXREF and some additional outboard frequency standard? I would like to avoid involvement with the K3EXREF unless it is required. I do not plan to use the K3 2m as an IF for microwave transverters, so I hope it will be stable enough on 2m without it. I look forward to your experience! Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
Both my early edition K144XV were not unconditionally stable and were swr intolerant I think you will find that the 3:1 swr is because it is oscillating "out of band". Try listening on a scanner. I have experienced this on my two k144xv and g4ddk had the same issue with his. One example produced 162MHz, one 168MHz one around 158MHz. When you tune or speak it stabilizes and generates on 2m My k144xv were fine if I operated at the bottom end of 2m where the swr was 1.1:1 but my antenna swr rose to 1.6:1 at around 144.8MHz and above this point it showed the instability you mentioned Mine were replaced with the later production run k144xv (the one without the centre spacer, but that could just be coincidence!) and the issue has not arisen since Dave G4FRE Message: 19 Date: Fri, 17 May 2013 05:26:24 -0500 From: Michael Eberle To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings Message-ID: <519605d0.20...@mchsi.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I've noticed strange behavior on both the W2 watt meter and a cross-needle meter when using my K3 on 2 meters. Just curious if anyone has had problems like this? In SSB mode, keying the mic without any audio causes the watt meter to show about 3 watts output power and 3:1 SWR. However If I hold the TUNE button and put out a carrier It shows the expected 7-10 Watts forward with normal low SWR. It also appears to show normal readings while speaking into the mic, but goes to the unusual readings with in between audio peaks. I was also involved in the beta test. I was/am using the "K3 as supplied" 5ppm oscillator and a rubidium 10MHz source and I managed to maintain 2Hz accuracy at 50.26MHz (40ppB)which is fine for the VHF/microwave weak signal modes I needed it for. Let me clarify my question. I'm wondering if the KTCXO3 0.5 ppm oscillator can be omitted and still get great results with the K3EXREF and the standard 5 ppm oscillator. This is of interest because I intend to acquire the K3EXREF but do not have the KTCXO3 and would prefer not to buy it if it doesn't add any benefit. My logic: If the K3EXREF adjusts the TCXO (via REF CAL) every 4 seconds, then why not let it adjust the standard K3 TCXO instead of having it adjust the optional KTCXO3 oscillator? Even though the two oscillators differ by an order of magnitude in their error, does that error make a difference when the K3EXREF adjustments are every four seconds? ps - During your beta testing were you using the standard K3 5 ppm oscillator or the KTCXO3 0.5 ppm oscillator? [Elecraft] OT Hearing HRD Communicate w/K3
Hello Wise and Powerful Reflector; I am experiencing a confounding problem with Ham Radio Deluxe, Digital Master 780 and my K3. I've determined that HRD polling the K3 is introducing a croaking pulse-like noise into my signal chain. I know it is HRD because if I quit out of HRD, no noise. In fact, if I merely click and hold on the Radio pane in Digital Master 780, the noise ceases. Additionally, if I click and hold on the Sound Card Pane, the noise also ceases. I assume this is because that action arrests HRD's polling of the K3. I hear it on transmit and I know it is going out with my signal because I've tuned my TH-F6A to the transmit frequency and gone out on the deck and heard it in the TH-F6A's receiver. I assume the noise is coming in on my various antennas because pulling the antenna jack causes the noise to cease. Pulling the audio cables does nothing. I hear the noise on the K3's RX on some bands but not on others. Where I really hear it is on the TX monitor when the Line in is set high and the computer's sound card is set low. If I try the reverse - set the Line In to 2 and the sound card on the computer to 100, I can barely hear the noise. That has been my workaround when on PSK lately but I would like to eliminate this noise altogether and keep my signal clean. Interestingly this doesn't show up as distortion on my external IMD meter from KK7UQ. I guess the noise is too wide and not a distortion product. I'm thinking a ferrite toroid on the antenna coax might solve this. I tried one of those clip on ferrite dealies with no joy. So the question is: does anybody on the list have any experience like this? Is a toroid a good idea? Which one and how many turns? Re: [Elecraft] OT Hearing HRD Communicate w/K3
Hi Jim; Thanks for the reply. HRD must be the source of the signal. It disappears mid croak when I quit HRD. That's not to say HRD is to *blame*. I have read your excellent and comprehensive treatise on RFI and that is what prompted me to suspect a "SERIOUS multi-turn ferrite choke" was needed. I am embarrassed to say that I am a graphic designer that is new to the hobby and your article goes over my head in a hurry! I was hoping for specific suggestions about a manufacturer, product and number of turns. I suspect the "problematic cable(s)" is the coax coming in from the antennas. It's not my tuner that is the problem because I tried completely taking it out of line and the noise persists. I'm not sure how to check the USB to serial cable. The noise goes completely away on RX when the antenna is disconnected. I have no way to check on TX without an antenna. Re: [Elecraft] OT Hearing HRD Communicate w/K3
Hi Joe; Thank you for the reply. As I mentioned to Jim , the noise completely disappears on RX when the antenna is disconnected. This leads me to suspect that the RFI is coming in on the antenna cable. Does that sound right? Re: [Elecraft] Other: Can you run coax inside metal conduit?
The short answer is that coax should be fine inside conduit, provided that the source and load are actually unbalanced. All the fields should be inside the coax, between the inner side of the outer shield and the inner conductor. However, if you, for example, connect a coax to a balanced antenna such as a dipole without a BALUN, or if the antenna is not tuned to the operating frequency, then RF may appear on the outside of the coax. If there is any, then nearby metal like the conduit can screw up the SWR, and in addition, the coax can pick up nearby interference. Of course the above is likely only really true if the coax shield is 100% coverage, perhaps with a foil wrap plus copper. Electrostatic coupling should show up on the outside of the shielf, and not find its way to the receiver. Magnetic coupling will mostly show up as currents on the outside of the shield, but in the absense of full coverage, it may also excite some currents on the inner conductor. I run coax through PVC conduit, to a remote antenna tuner mounted outside the house. It seems to work OK. -Larry K4EO > On Jun 12, 2024, at 11:45 AM, Jerry Moore wrote: > > I have 30' run through my basement and want to eliminate potential > interaction between the coax and power wires in the same area (don't ask). If you do that with standard AM (envelope) detection, you will get up to about 20% (even) harmonic distortion. You will probably get better audio treating it as SSB, in spite of frequency and phase errors. To reproduce single sideband full and reduced carrier signals accurately, you need synchronous detection. (It should also be quieter for double sideband full carrier.) (For Scroggie fans, consider the phasor diagram for 100% modulation at the point where the sideband is at 90 degrees to the carrier. That gives an amplitude of sqrt(2) when you should just have the nominal carrier amplitude of 1. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuner
Hi Alan, Like you, I have an MFJ-998 auto tuner, but was never really satisfied with its integration with the Elecraft K3. I suggested to Martin that MFJ produce a cable to integrate with Elecraft radios, but that hasn't yet happened so far as I know. Based on the superb tuning capability that the internal K3 tuner has, I decided to take the plunge on a KAT500. I can't be happier that I did. The integration with the K3 is seamless and pretty much flawless. The tuner follows my K3 wherever it goes, quickly and silently (silently because I've stored matches for all bands; on the initial tune there's of need a bit of clatter but nothing like the 998's) matching my two low wire dipoles on all bands including 6M, though 160M is a bit tough because of the 52-foot length of the wires. I don't get the "surprise!" tune-ups that I got with the 998. I get many more matches on 160M and 80M than I got with the 998. All I have to do is switch my amp when I change bands now. At some point I know I'll end up with a KPA500 and that switching function will become a thing of the past too. I recently added a third antenna (coil-loaded sloper) for 160M/80M and the KAT500 loads it up beautifully. It's sweet that that particular antenna remains always selected for those two bands. I suspect that at least in part, the MFJ-998 is designed to evaluate situations where it must expect the user will throw a full 1.5KW at it into a really poor match, and it then must say "My components really aren't designed for that particular extreme, and I can't give you a <2:1 match."There's no way for me to tell it "Hey, I'm never sending you more than 800, I promise!" One thing I did like about the 998 is I had two sets of tuning settings - one for dry weather, and one for rainy/snowy weather. It was easy to switch between the two on each antenna. Of course that is possible to do with the KAT500 as well. You can save a "dry weather" configuration file and a "wet weather" file and read the appropriate one into the tuner as needed. I've not yet gotten 'round to creating the wet weather file. I keep the 998 around thinking one day MFJ will produce a cable for Elecraft radios, and I may decide to go through the hassle of getting a building permit to install 240v to the shack, and go fully QRO. Until then, it's not connected to anything now and the KAT500 is my do-it-all tuner for all occasions. I went the kit route with the KAT500 and like all the Elecraft kits, it was a barrel of fun to assemble. I can't speak to how the KAT500 will integrate with your Icom, but as for its integration with the K3, it's the bees knees. 73, Tyler, KC2LST -- Message: 15Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2015 02:47:10 +0100From: "G4GNX" To: "Elecraft Reflector" Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500 tunerMessage-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Hi all. I am contemplating purchasing a KPA500 amplifier to complement my K3. I currently have a MFJ 998 tuner which is good for 1.5KW but I think that the KAT500 tuner from Elecraft will be a superior product. Would this be a sensible assumption? If I also buy the KAT500, will it easily interface with my Icom IC700 and is there a specific setting that would allow me to use the IC7100 ?Tune? button, which allows tuning at reduced power (ISTR it?s set at 10watts)? 73, Alan. Elecraft stands on its own. I made the original comment, and I was not "bashing" anyone. TenTec replaced an entire board and some individual components. I've had Elecraft troubleshoot boards rather than replace them. Beginning in the 80s, I owned and liked Ten Tec transceivers, but learned the hard way that their service department is a profit center. I do not believe that to be true of Elecraft. Last month, Elecraft did replace a major board in my KPA500 because they deemed it unrepairable. Re: [Elecraft] normal K3 voltage drop on TX
Hi All >From my time working in a Ham repair shop I can say that if a power supply >dipped by more than 0.25 Volts between RX and 100w TX AT THE TERMINALS ON THE >CASE OF THE POWER SUPPLY then that power supply wanted either replacement or >repair. I have just checked my own power supply for my K3 ( EP-925 or PS-30M badged linear PSU) and the voltage change (at the terminals on the case of the power supply) between RX and 100W TX is less than 70 milli-volts. This was measured using a both a Thurlby 1503HA (32000 count) or Fluke 8060A (4.5 digits) meters. The K3 is fed via 6 feet of 20 Amp cable and shows a voltage change between RX and 100w TX (on the K3 display) of no more than 0.6 Volts. There are no fuses in this lead but if there were I would allow an extra 0.1 volt per fuse giving a total of 0.8 volts. If the k3 showed a difference of 1 volt or more then that would be cause for immediate investigation. Put in its simplest form a voltage drop of 1 volt at 20 amps means that 20 watts of power is being wasted. In the example quoted by the original author we are seeing a drop of 3 volts at 17-.5 Amps a loss of over 50 watts (the equivalent of 4 Amps at 12.5 Volts)! Even the cheapest digital meters have a 200 milli-volt range and you can use this to measure the voltage drop across each junction in the wiring to find where the fault lies. I have cured many rigs that use the standard 6 pin connector of various problems simply by cleaning the power supply lead contacts throughout including the contacts between spade terminals and fuses and fuse holders and fuses. As a matter of standard practice all my crimp contact junctions are soldered as well as being crimped using a good quality tool. I hope this note provides adequate guidance. [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini
I am setting up a K3/0-Mini for a friend who will use it to operate remote stations accessible via remotehams.com service. The K3/0-Mini was delivered with an Owner's Manual. The manual is limited to describing how to set up the Mini to work with a PC, how to operate with the RemoteRig 1258 MKII System (which we are not using), and how to update the Mini's firmware. The Owner's Manual does not contain any information about how to use all of the controls on the Mini, or any information about its Menu and Config selections. Since the person who will be using the Mini is not familiar with at all with the Mini, or its big brother, a K3, we will need a user-oriented manual that provides the all the information that an operator will need to know. I can download copy of a K3 manual, however, I don't know if the explanations described for a K3 also pertain to the functions of the K3/0_Mini. Please let me know if there is a more complete user-oriented Operator's Manual for the MIni, or will the K3 manual correctly explain all the functions of the Mini? Thanks, George. I look forward to hearing the new SP3 in action! 73, Tyler, KC2LST --Message: 28 Date: Fri, 11 Sep 2015 17:30:20 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft SP3 External Speaker details Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi all, The SP3 is our new external speaker. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SP3 External Speaker details
My shack is a bit cramped too. Currently I have a couple of really inadequate computer speakers sitting atop another rig near the K3/P3 combo. That rig sits atop the RF deck of an ALS-600, which itself sits on top of a KAT500 that's in turn sitting on top of a now-unused MFJ-998. So that's quite a "tech stack" already. Perhaps the advent of the SP3 will give me a reason to rearrange all that stuff so that I can have a good speaker (or two :)). Come to think of it, replacing the ALS-600 with a KPA500 would free up a bit of space as well and improve aesthetics at the same time. Wayne, you may have just engineered another Elecraft tipping point. 73, Tyler, KC2LST On Saturday, September 12, 2015 2:23 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: Wayne, I already have a KX3 and I love it for portable QRP work. The very idea of hiding it away in an SP3 though is just wrong. Of course, you would never do that — would you? 73, phil, K7PEH > On Sep 12, 2015, at 11:09 AM, Wayne Burdick wrote: > > Phil, > > If you ever decide to seriously downsize, you can mount a KX3 inside an SP3. > > Wayne > N6KR > > > On Sep 12, 2015, at 11:05 AM, Phil Hystad wrote: > >> The idea of producing a matching speaker is inevitable given the history of >> matching speakers (Note: obviously the idea of “matching” has different >> interpretations by different vendors)…. >> >> ...But, unfortunately, I have no plans to buy one because I have no room for >> its matchability to be useful as >> my current K-line sits in a nice line up: K3, P3, KPA500 and there is no >> more room for another >> side-by-side box. [Elecraft] K3/0_Mini Operator Manual
I am setting up a K3/0-Mini for a friend who will use it to operate remote stations accessible via remotehams.com service. The operator of the K3/0-Mini, although licensed for many year and a very accomplished op, has never used a K3 and, therefore, is unfamiliar with the controls on the K3/0-Mini. The K3/0-Mini was delivered with an Owner's Manual. However, the manual is limited to describing how to set up the Mini to work with a PC, how to operate with the RemoteRig 1258 MKII System (which we are not using), and how to update the Mini's firmware. The K3/0-Mini Owner's Manual does not contain any information about how to use all of the controls on the Mini, or any information about its Menu and Config selections. In the meantime, I have loaned the op my K3 manual, and held training session on the basics of operating a K3. Please let me know if there is a more complete user-oriented K3/0-Mini Operator's Manual, or if will one be forthcoming in the future. Thanks, George.
