Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service: we hear you
Rob, I feel your pain. I do EE work for a car manufacture. Aluminum and stainless steel are near impossible to get. Microcontrollers and other semis are not in stock and currently show 52 weeks lead time. When you can get metal and chips you pay a dear premium. It has been that way since nearly the beginning of the pandemic. Most people don't understand that we are experiencing a full out trade war. I have no idea when this all will end, but at this point it is a very bleak situation. I really hope Elecraft can survive the supply chain war. I am witnessing the same situation every day. 73 KA7FTP Len -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Toast Sent: Friday, April 22, 2022 8:04 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service: we hear you OK, Steve When is the last time you tried to send in a unit for service. Re: [Elecraft] RPN Calc App For Android
In 1975 I bought a HP25 for around $125. Though it wasn't labeled 'C' it was a HP25C. After that I could never really use an algebraic calculator. A few years back I really wanted a new HP RPN calculator. I "built" a WP 34S. You take a HP-20b or HP-30b reflash the firmware and put an overlay on the keyboard. It's a fantastic solution for those wanting a really good HP calculator. They have also produced a very professional manual. Someday I may buy a swissmirco, but for now this is perfect. Re: [Elecraft] MH3 mic case
I'm not using glue that melts that plastic together. My strategy was rather to embed the post into a good amount of epoxy. There is really no force on the mounts other than the pull of the screws. I suspect that the plastic "studs" were a bit short and then pulling on them with the screws started a fracture. Once the stress of that is done they should not stress much once epoxied into place. Since there is no lateral force I doubt adding fiber is going to make much difference. len -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bill Frantz Sent: Friday, September 03, 2021 11:21 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] MH3 mic case I like to mix in some short lengths of fiberglass with the epoxy. Re: [Elecraft] MH3 mic case
Hi Ian, I have exactly the same issue. I too am a CW guy and my MH3 only hangs on a hook. The case "studs" appear to have cracked under the weight of the cord. I emailed Elecraft support and was told the Mic was no longer under warranty and I would need to buy a new mic. No one answered my follow up email asking if I could get a discount on a replacement mic. In any case I opted to just repair what I have. If you have not unscrewed the screws from the case and all three studs are broken, like mine was, the studs can easily be epoxied. I first removed ALL the working parts from the case. Keep an eye out for the button spring which is just a small flexible "rod". There was also a small piece of broken plastic which was used in the cable retainer. Once the case is emptied out the base where the studs broke can be accessed. I put a dap of epoxy on the studs and the base. I put a little inside the actual stud where it meets the base. Next I put the two shell pieces together and held it in place with a rubber band. After 24 hours I removed the screws and added more epoxy around the studs for additional strength. I also epoxied in the broken cable retainer. Just make sure you don't put epoxy where it might interfere with the electrical parts of the cord. After another 24 hours I reassembled the mic and everything functions as expected. It's a bummer that the plastic casting is inferior. But with the reinforcement it is now better than new. 73 Len -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ian Liston-Smith Sent: Friday, September 03, 2021 3:09 AM To: Elecraft List Subject: [Elecraft] MH3 mic case Does anyone know if Elecraft sell replacement cases for this expensive microphone? Wayne you kill me! I suppose my musical endeavors are proceeded with the same adjective as my radio activities, amateur. I took piano lessons when I was young. I mostly enjoyed the lessons because my piano teacher, who was a wonderful blind lady, was also extremely brilliant. My piano skills are highly lacking but I do enjoy creating music. I've tinkered with a bunch of different interments and have never really mastered any of them. To me life is like a sampler that keeps me far too distracted to become good at anyone thing. In any case... To keep the posting short... I do "poorly" still compose. Re: [Elecraft] Old DOS computers
I suppose you'll never understand... But for those of us who keep them I understand. Why throw away something that is still functional? One of my "many" hobbies includes vintage computers. Considering that I use my IBM 5150 to write 1702 EPROMS justifies not throwing the old machine away. I use another older DOS machine to build images for my PDP11 that uses a SCSI controller. New hardware can't do this. The newer machines don't support older style parallel and serial ports. The buss on the motherboards do not allow for ISA cards. Also many hardware devices expect a 4.77 Mhz clock. DOS box and other emulators don't interact well with real hardware. And last... I love the new mentality that anything more than a few years old should become eWaste. All this "obsolete" just is overwhelming our landfills. People toss out cell phones, computers, TV's way before their useful life is up. You do what you want, my parents taught me not to be wasteful. 73 Len -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Dick Sent: Monday, June 28, 2021 7:09 PM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Old DOS computers I will never understand how those in the Amateur radio hobby can spend thousands of dollars on equipment, yet they keep old PC’s that are not very efficient at all, nor are they secure. Re: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class, ~1975
Morning Wayne, As a variation of a theme I understand exactly what you are saying about tools. At nearly the same time during the end of my my Junior days and High School I designed my first computer using the freshly minted Intel 8008. My only tools were an Eico 460, an Ohm meter, a LED, and my mind. Back in those days there were very few technical resources that a teenager had access to. Even the library at the University of Utah had really limited information.I grew up near there and spent many an hour walking the shelves browsing topics. Probably like many others on this list today, in addition to Ham Radio and many other hobbies, I still love tinkering with old computers and electronics. I type on a laptop that has more processing power, memory, and storage space than existed in the world when I first started tinkering. Ironically I just completed building a Mil Mod 8/80 replica. The PCB's were produced by another Ham in Canada, VA3NGC Charles Baetsen. Even though I have very powerful tools today, a multi trace scope, a sixteen channel logic analyzer, it was still a challenging task. To top off that project I designed and built a 16k/64k RAM/ROM card. The little system has both 8008 and 8080 plug cards and I want to run more extensive software than I could have otherwise done in 2k of RAM. I used KICAD for the PCB layout, a far cry from laying out a PCB with tape and Mylar like I did in the 70's. Even though the tools of today are light years ahead of what we had in our youth there is a single common denominator, the creativity of own minds. I don't believe we will EVER invent a more powerful tool than sits on our shoulders. Rare are those who have ever, and will ever, learn to master its capabilities. Thanks for the seed! 73 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Wayne Burdick Sent: Friday, April 23, 2021 11:09 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class, ~1975 OK, I've really dated myself now. Anyone remember "drafting"? A favorite class in high school: blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, straight edges, hand lettering, projections and elevations. We invented things to draw that weren't real, but looked like they should be. Did all the math by hand -- on a slide rule, if necessary. Day-dreamed about what we might one day build. 45 years later, we're using tools we couldn't have imagined. Modeling circuits and objects with millions of parameters and vectors, realizing them in virtual space, manipulating them in real time. Testing finished products before they're even assembled. The transformation is mind boggling. Yet the best part now, as it was then, is the occasional burst of creative energy that propels an idea forward. The feeling of pieces falling into place. Or forcing them into place out of sheer necessity. Most of the time, we think of our new tools and techniques as advances in the state of the art. Things we can't live without. But those same defining moments happened just as often in simpler times. Case in point -- my first real project, a rendition of W7ZOI's Micro-mountaineer. Carefully documenting it took several sheets of 4-squares-per-inch grid paper, which may still be in my cellar, beneath a lifetime of such drawings. With the schematic, I took a lot of pride in making the circuits look well-organized, as if that would somehow improve my odds. On the PC board, I drew large traces and pads with the etch-resist pen, as if that would somehow appease the electrons. I etched the PCB, soldered two dozen parts, and connected a 12 V lantern battery. Thanks to my paranoia about what would happen if I did it wrong, I'd taken my time and done it right. I was rewarded with a hiss of band noise and a few CW signals on 40 meters. Here's to those moments, and to that timeless pursuit: turning abstractions into reality. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to l...@ka7ftp.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Hi George, As many others suggest use your email program to filter messages into folders. I do that using Outlook, but I also do not read the list from the emails. I only use the messages from my email when I want to reply. I pull up the Web archive and read the list from there. It makes it faster, at least for me. I've never felt compelled to read messages with subject lines that are not of interest to me. Your brain is the best filter. Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide
This is funny: " I expect a fire war when I say this and that is, most extra class hams licensed with in the last 15 years are dumber than a bag of hammers when it comes to radio theory, operation, station building, safe practices or anything as simple as soldering or crimping on a PL259." I'm one of those Hams that is dumber than a hammer. I got my Novice license in 1974 and finally got around to upgrading to Extra in the last 15 year. Actually since CW is my favorite mode of operation I was ambivalent about upgrading. Only till I realized Extras don't need to memorize that band edges did I upgrade. No, I don't waste time on games. I spent the last forty years building a career. I ran an R&D team for 5, was CTO of multiple companies, I do both electronic and software engineering, oh did I mention I have 14 patents? I can solder the smallest surface mount devices by hand. I just finished building an observatory in my back yard. I built a 1965 replica Cobra, a GIANT analog synth, and I restore vintage computers. I am 67 years old, for 7 years I played WoW, for 6 years I played Everquest and for 5 years I have played Guild Wars 2. I enjoyed each of these games. I moved on to the more progressive game but still enjoy playing them from time to time. I only play GW2 at this time. Making the games set up and work with all peripherals is no harder than setting up FT8. Setting up RTTY with 2 or 3 decoders and getting everything to work...much harder. I am finding that many people in their 40s and 50s are getting into Amateur Radio. Some want the challenge of making stuff work, some want the antenna building experience, some want kit building but most seem to be from a subset of the population that are what one might call internet geeks. These guys do great in the transition to ham radio. Many gamers spend upwards to 2k$ on a video card only for their game box. So, $$$ is generally not a limiting option for this group. When they get hooked, they are hooked hard. In NCJ a few years ago, there was an article about contesting and video games. The parallels between the 2 of being "in the zone" were made. The same psychological high is involved but actually, it is more involved and dynamic than an online game. Pile ups, gotta love them, any mode you can get them, cw or ssb will provide that psychological high that melts the time away and keeps you on your toes. One can get so involved that you have to force yourself to take a deep breath and relax the shoulders and refocus on your posture so you can continue to run. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 hours later, you have to pee, get a drink, grab a snack and get at it again. It is addicting. I am glad that cw contests are not every weekend because my life would end. LOL. SERIOUS online gaming requires raiding to really advance in MMORPG games. Serious ranking for WRTC takes the same. It takes tech, engineering, $$$ and commitment to advance in the world of contesting. What reward? Well, if you like to compete then this is your mojo. If you like to collect wallpaper for working all places, counties, countries, etc it is there. If you want to be recognised in a magazine for contest performance that is here. In the ham radio world there are no cash prizes. Not so in the gaming world, there really are professional gamers. Heh for that matter, I used to farm gold in games and sell it for $$$. I did this while waiting to Raid. In games you have dps meters and one always tried to be on the top of the pile by being best in your class for whatever your function was. N1MM has a rate meter and mults window based on band population and feedback and spotting networks. How does one get these gamers to transition to Amateur Radio? Good question. When I state that my hobby is Ham Radio, I get, "I did not think people did that now. Or Really, what is that? Why would you do that?" the conclusion that I get from these comments is: there is not enough exposure of the population to Amateur Radio. Plain and simple people just don't hear about it or see it in action. There are no public special events. There are not enough elmers to encourage people. There are no longer any towers being put up because of HOA and zoning ordinance rules. Towers used to be focal points for people to talk about. Why does he have a tower? " OpenSSL pretty much runs the entire secure Internet. Linux, Python, etc. But those are exceptions." And an interesting statistic... "It's often said that more than half of new businesses fail during the first year. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this isn't necessarily true. Data from the BLS shows that approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years of being open, 45% during the first five years, and 65% during the first 10 years. Only 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more. These statistics haven't changed much over time, and have been fairly consistent since the 1990s.1 Though the odds are better than the commonly held belief, there are still many businesses that are closing down every year in the United States." It seems that this thread has become the whipping boy for open source. I would suggest that it is irrelevant whether something is open or closed source. Much of the "stuff" we buy today is created and sold in a one off runs from China. Once produced it is sold at Walmart and few people care how long it works, as long as it's cheap. For the few who care most stores will do a "no questions asked" refund. And then the consumer is off to buy another piece of junk. Open source projects are often created by a single individual , or a few people, who care about creating a "thing". There is often no thought about money, profit, or even maintaining the project. There are a few that gain traction and in some cases change the world. I'm sure it's more than the few projects that we have all listed in this thread that thrive. It's no different than the stats above on business. Unless you can create something that is useful and compel people to buy and use, the product will eventually cease to evolve and the company will probably die. Many open source projects reach maturity when the goals of the project are meet. Those project are often abandoned... Not really that different from a business that no longer innovates. This seems like a silly debate to continue demonizing one method or another. Both methods are valid and are based of different motivations. And in reality they are indifferent to our opinions... I think the question originally raised was as to the possibility of open sourcing the older Elecraft code. My guess is that may not happen for a lot of reasons. As long as Elecraft is doing well in business why would they freely part with their intellectual property, I wouldn't. len __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Linux? Gcc? >From what I can tell Linux pretty much owns much of the market for servers and many consumer related markets. The server that carries this list is more than likely Linux based. Isn't the K4 linux based? Linux is open source last time I checked. I'm not seeing that closed source has a better track record, ie. Microsoft... How many commercial products are sold every year that become orphaned? Not being open source helped the consumer. 99% of consumers couldn't extend the life of a product five seconds either way. I too have run my own engineering business for decades, close to 30 years. During that time I've worked for both large and small companies doing R&D and production. If you are honest, open vs closed source has nothing to do with the quality of the product, either SW or HW. The quality is more of a commitment of the creators, experience helps build that, and commitment to good process. Elecraft didn't do this on their own, they depend on feedback from their users to keep a tight loop on quality. Sure, they could hire a massive Q&A team, but why when they have an experienced pool of users/testers who pay them to the QA. Wayne and Eric are clearly exceptional entrepreneurs who are in this for the long term. They care about their products and customers. Open vs closed is moot. It's simply a business call, and their call to make. My guess is that you may not even be aware of the open source influenced products you own. (Routers, tv's, etc..) That is a totally different argument whether Elecraft should open their source vs quality... I personally see quality and crap on both sides of the isle, and there is no monopoly involved... Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted
Dave, I understand your disappointment, but in reality these little toys of ours cost money to design and produce. Just for fun I googled the K3 and that a posting from 2009 eluded that a loaded K3 in 2009 was $3700. In today's money that is 4,522.73. The 1000$ plus price of the K4 line doesn't appear to be unreasonable considering the effort that has gone into its design and new features. Unfortunately, in our world nothing of quality ever seems to be free. I'm mortified every time I go in and buy a new car. I don't buy cars often, but each time I do the prices have more than doubled. My first new car was 6,800$, then 15,000$, $30,000, and the last did not quite double rather 40,000$. (Our previous car was destroyed in a wreck and replaced sooner.) And worst yet not one of the cars had a resale close to what we paid for it. The bottom line here is that you have to pay to play. If you find something that works for you be happy with the experience. In my book anything that give you the experience is what's important. I would have to cut one short to join another over lapping presentation. A few of the presenters needed to work out the technical details of using the SW. One presenter I watched assumed his slides were on the screen, they were not. He would refer to the slides, but his face was on the screen. The navigation was a bit screwy, mostly related to the presenter schedule. Having to pan the exhibit hall was tedious. Make it navigate more like a real website and not a video game. Loved the Elecraft presentations. Bothe the K4 and the KX2 walk though. Makes my mouth water for a K4. The method for giving away the prizes was totally stupid. Should have been a minimum amount of participation and then a random drawing. The point system encouraged bad behavior. i.e. If I was actually watching presentations there was no way I could ever get enough points to qualify. [Elecraft] OT Good Source for Stainless Fasteners and
+1 on this, though the process is "galling" Galling is one the most common problems when tightening fasteners. Also known as cold welding, galling results in damaged threads, broken fasteners, weakened joints and seized bolts. What causes galling? Essentially, galling is a form of severe adhesive wear. Galling happens during installation to fasteners made of alloys such as stainless steel, aluminum and titanium. While the fastener is being tightened, pressure builds between the thread surfaces and breaks down the protective oxide coatings. Without the oxide coating, the thread’s metal high points are exposed to each other. This, in turn, creates friction, which causes heat that seizes the metal. When galling happens If the galling is minor, slight damage may occur to the thread surface. In that case, the installer may be able to remove the fastener. On the other end, severe cases of galling can weld the nut and bolt together and there is no way to remove the fastener. If the fastener is tightened once galling begins, the fastener may even be twisted off or see its threads stripped. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gary Peterson Sent: Monday, June 22, 2020 5:57 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] OT Good Source for Stainless Fasteners and Stainless hardware is commonly used on FM broadcast antennas. Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide
Hi Nate, Nice to meet you, a very small world indeed. https://www.omaha.com/obits/michaelson-russell-russ-stevens/article_4b36033a -a07d-543f-a1ab-43687f27a0e6.html Yes, Russ had a great voice! When I first met him he was a dj on KNAK, I believe. When he was on the air I would call him up and "win" albums. I was in my 30's when he relocated to Omaha. I was really sad to see him go. He took his tower with him when we moved. Although I don't think he ever set up a station again. When I was 15, before getting my Novice license, I went with Russ to attend WIMU at Mac's Inn. Russ had copied all of the military code course to cassette tapes and gave me a copy. I listened and practiced for many hours. At WIMU Russ had me sit down for one of the code contests. Even though I joined part way through I ended up winning! That was pretty cool for a kid just learning code and ready to take the Novice exam. The speeds went up to 25 or 30 WPM! I still have voice mails on my phone left by Russ. I will regret the day that I may have to replace my phone and can no longer hear his voice. He had a huge effect on my life. 73 len -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Nate Bargmann Sent: Saturday, December 14, 2019 12:02 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide * On 2019 14 Dec 11:02 -0600, l...@ka7ftp.com wrote: > And last... I went to work for Union Pacific Railroad in 1991 as a telecom tech and there was a very distinctive voice on many voice response systems on the UPRR telephone network. I learned that was "Russ" and later got to talk with him on the phone and then a few years later he came to Wichita, KS and did a presentation for several of us techs on something (I don't recall what, now!). It was quite nice meeting him in person. I did not know he had become SK earlier this year. Thanks for sharing your experiences with Russ, Len. Rest assured, Russ' voice was heard by likely all UPRR employees at some point through the '90s and early '00s as well as customers and others calling UPRR in Omaha. For those looking for more simple kits to introduce basic radio concepts to newcomers, various QRP groups offer such kits. I know the Four State QRP Group has done so in the past. One shorthand phrase I like to use is. "Radio for radio's sake." I translate it as no matter what end goal we're trying to achieve, we're using some part of the radio spectrum to accomplish the goal. 73, Nate, N0NB -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. s. Many of these "hackers/makers" are people like us who love radio and technology. I suspect that these people are our future if we don't run them off. And last... The real thing that drew me to ham radio was another ham, Russ Michaelson N7SM (SK 2019). Russ and I meet at the University of Utah's surplus store. Even though we had a 12 year age difference, Russ and I connected almost immediately and became lifelong friends. I was in Junior high school and Russ was beginning a family when we meet. From Russ I learned about more about radio and electronics, and we had many adventures in the process. I never remember Russ complaining about the ionosphere. He built a magnificent basement "shack". When he built his own 100 foot tower from scratch I climbed to the top to help set up and adjust antennas. (By then I was in my 20's, no child labor involved. :) If we expect this hobby to continue into the future, we need to be the "Russ" in someone else's life. We need to pass our love of radio to the next generation. Just expecting someone to "be" interested and on their way after the exam will never happen. Propagation will always change, we need to be the constant. 73 KA7FTP Len -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of David Gilbert Sent: Friday, December 13, 2019 9:37 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide This of course is a discussion that isn't likely to die before we do, but I really don't think that any significant portion of today's youth will ever look at amateur radio like we do. I wish that weren't the case, but reality bites. 1. The major lure of amateur radio for most of us was the ability to freely talk to faraway places. Young people today can do that with FM quality and yet often they don't ... they text or chat via message groups and forums. 2. Communicating today is license free, and while even now with today's lesser requirements getting an amateur radio license is maybe not a roadblock it's a nuisance to have to study for something that you don't otherwise care about. 3. Effectively communicating today is far cheaper hardware-wise than for amateur radio, especially for long distances. 4. Communicating today is independent of time of day or position in the sunspot cycle. 5. A basic competency in amateur radio was once considered a stepping stone to a technical career. That is hardly the case today. In fact, I remember one manager of a test department in another company telling me he tried to avoid hiring hams because they talked about it too much on the job. One thing I do believe has carryover appeal is the spirit of competition. Humans in general always seem keen to compete at almost anything ... from eating hot dogs to running to vicariously watching football to quilting to barbeque. Young people today have video games that provide a FAR richer competitive environment than any ham radio contest (I do both, by the way), and I've always thought that one way to drum up interest in ham radio is to develop a contest format that has similar elements. Ham radio contests are essentially endurance events that involve independent action throughout the contest with the comparison occurring at the end, and often weeks or months later. Video games require different but otherwise comparable proficiency (both mental and physical) but involve real time counter moves to any opponent. The closest we hams come to offsetting somebody we view as competition is to steal their frequency or QRM them. I'm not at all suggesting that we do any suc h thing, but a contest where we could take some action that subtracted from somebody else's score is the kind of thing I'm talking about. And no, I don't know how to do that either, but it illustrates what I'm talking about. It's not any surprise to me that contesting is one of the few surviving ham radio activities with high participation. Even ragchewing has practically died out, and if anyone disputes that take a look at how much time you spend each week reading email reflectors versus being on the air (other than in a contest). I'm not really sure what Wayne was referring to here, and maybe he implied that same thing that I'm saying, but we aren't going to bring young folks into the hobby by trying to convince them that the same things that appealed to us 40 years ago are going to appeal to them. This isn't a communication or publicity problem. In spite of the comments from hams I've seen over the years, most young people pretty much know the general framework of ham radio and they've simply rejected it in favor of other things. There are always a few exceptions
[Elecraft] Feature density of portable transceivers: K1 vs. KX2
Hi Wayne, I for one am impressed and LOVE my KX2, and KX3. When I was a kid I would take my Globe Patrol on a few family road trips. The Globe Patrol was a regen receiver that I built from a kit. The functionality was not dense at all, and I had to take a few more accessories to use it. At that time I loved thrown up a wire and listening to SW radio stations. My KX2 fits in a little zippered case smaller than the Globe Patrol, and contains everything I need to both transmit and receive. The receiver quality is out of this world! Thanks for your genius, and all the others at Elecraft who made a little boys dream come true! 73 Len KA7FTP -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Wayne Burdick Sent: Friday, December 06, 2019 4:58 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Cc: k...@groups.io Subject: [Elecraft] Feature density of portable transceivers: K1 vs. KX2 A morning break in the rain today in the Bay Area allowed me to sneak out for some field operation with the KX2. While using every weapon in the KX2's arsenal, I thought about how to best convey just how feature-dense this radio is. To appreciate it, you really need to hold the rig in your hand and try it out. Since that's not always an option for a potential user, the next best thing might be to create an engineering metric. Granted, "features per cubic inch" (feature density) isn't exactly science, but it is useful for comparing portable transceivers, where both size and versatility really matter. Here's one possible formula: F_in = ( bands + modes + internal_options + other_significant_features ) / in^3 Fuzzy? Well...yeah. Nonetheless, here's what happens if we apply this to our legacy 4-band K1 transceiver and the KX2. * K1: bands: 4 (owner's choice of HF bands) modes: 1 (CW) options: 3 (battery, ATU, noise blanker) other: 3 (keyer, CW messages, variable-BW xtal filter) F = ( 4 + 1 + 3 + 3 ) / 64 in^3 = 0.17 features per cubic inch KX2: bands: 9 (80, 60, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 m) modes: 5 (CW, SSB, AM, FM, DATA) options: 5 (mic, battery, ATU, paddle, real-time clock, 100 W amp) other: 35 (keyer, CW messages, int. mic, DVR, speech compression, VOX, IF DSP (SDR), switchable preamp, switchable attenuator, audio peaking filter (APF, for CW), RTTY decode/encode, PSK31 decode/encode, CW/data auto-tune, fully adjustable AGC slope/threshold/decay, RF gain & AF limiter, dual watch, variable-passband filters, passband shift, noise blanking, noise reduction, audio effects, RX/TX EQ, dual VFOs, split, wide-range RIT/XIT, cross-mode (SSB/CW), CW/data logging, 4 user-programmable functions, Amp-hour tracking, scanning, freq. memories, direct frequency entry, full remote control interface, freq. up/down buttons (on mic), measurement of PWR/SWR/ALC/CMP/supply voltage/supply current, adjustable carrier-operated relay) F = ( 9 + 5 + 5 + 36 ) / 26 = 2.1 features per cubic inch * By this metric, the KX2 packs about 12 times as much "punch" as a K1. (As a principal designer of both radios, I have to admit this is a bit alarming. In 2001 we felt the K1 was pretty much state of the art for small CW rigs.) Of course, holding the KX2 in your hand, then actually putting it on the air, provides a much more satisfying comparison. Calculation of feature density of the KX3 is left as an exercise for the reader :) 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to l...@ka7ftp.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX3 SWR issue
Curious if anyone on the reflector has experienced false SWR readings on their KX3? No antenna tuner is installed. Radio tested on a dependable dummy load and SWR/Power meter. On transmit at 5.8 W or less, the radio displays "full-scale" SWR reading (> 1.4-1) with power output consistent with radio power setting. At 6w and above, display jumps down to 0 SWR and 0 RF output even though the radio is still able to transmit. Receiver functions perfectly. I have initiated an EENT, and re-loded latest software from Elecraft site. I loaded the original factory configuration provided to me by Elecraft. If anyone has any further suggestions that I might consider before I send the unit back to Elecraft for evaluation, I would be very grateful. Re: [Elecraft] Display opinions
One interesting thing about the Elecraft displays, they can't be screwed up with clever programming. As they stand they are highly readable and predictable. When companies use fully bit addressable displays there is always the temptation to use every last pixel, just because they can. Even when things start out uncluttered each new release adds to the dysfunction. There is always too much temptation to screw up a good thing. Just like overloading switch functions I really appreciate the simplicity and clean obvious function of the K-line displays. I truly hate the trend to have to "web two-dot-O' everything. There is always a balance when it comes to the UI, Elecract nailed it the first time around! Re: [Elecraft] OT: not bashing a product just a warning to future purchasers.
. This frustrates me to see Gerald's OT post on the Elecraft list. First: It is totally inappropriate material for the Elecraft support list. Shame on you Gerald. Second: Since the can of worms was open I feel it necessary to come to Hans defense. I have been both a fan and customer of Hans for many years. Hans is a first class engineer as well as an honest supplier of really neat and cool kits. He has not only shared his knowledge openly with the Ham Radio, computer, and other technical communities. But though his kits made access to his designs easily accessible to others. I have built his U2 and U3. The thought behind every aspect of the U3 is simply brilliant. If you have never seen a U3 look at the picture of mine: http://ka7ftp.com/ Every time I've bought kits from Hans I've almost felt guilty of theft since his prices are so low. Hans answers his email and is contactable in many ways. Thank you Hans, please keep it up. Big Big Fan and supporter! KA7FTP 73 Len Bayles -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Hans Summers Sent: Saturday, May 06, 2017 2:38 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] OT: not bashing a product just a warning to future purchasers. Dear Gerald Well if that isn't product bashing, I don't know what is... you are entitled to your opinion, but in the rare event of a dissatisfied customer we prefer if you contact us directly with your problem, rather than post vague critiicism in a public and un-related forum. I feel the need to set the record straight on a few points, and apologise for the bandwidth here in the Elecraft forum where the original post should never have been posted; hence the "OT" prefix to the post. Firstly for background - QRP Labs was started properly, in April 2013. Since that time we have shipped out almost 40,000 kits across our range, in 9,500 orders, to thousands of customers globally. The products are very highly appreciated and have received good reviews in major amatuer radio publications around the world; the most recent US publications are QST November 2016, QST May May 2017, and TSM (The Spectrum Monitor) May 2017 http://www.thespectrummonitor.com/ We ship from Japan for, what were at the time, my personal reasons. But it makes no difference - they have to ship from somewhere, and they are intended for everyone, not exclusively for US kit builders! In fact we have shipped packages to 69 countries worldwide. That's 69 post office entities, not DXCC entities which would be a much higher count ;-) Every order confirmation sent out since April 2013 has requested feedback from the customer on when the package arrives. A proportion of people do provide this feedback and this has enabled us to openly publish statistics on shipping times, which you can see on the website at http://qrp-labs.com/shipping - and further information on shipping is available at http://qrp-labs.com/faq#shipping so there should not have needed to be any surprises. A pleasant side-effect is that shipping from Japan is very reliable and inexpensive, Japanese international airmail is cheaper for example, than sending something domestically within the UK and many other countries. You ordered two 50-ohm 20W Dummy Load kits http://qrp-labs.com/dummy at a price of $8.50 each which I believe is the least priced dummy load kit anywhere. This is also one of our simplest to assemble and use kits. I am at a loss to understand your comment about the part leads bending under the component's own weight! The resistors in the kit are 20pcs of 1K 1W resistor, there is no way those chunky resistor wires bend easily! In all the kits we use good quality components, all through-hole - usually 1/4-Watt resistors but in some kits 1/6-Watt where physical space constraints dictate, or the 1W resistors where higher power is needed. The capacitors are NP0 types with Class-I low loss RF dielectric. All the PCBs are professional quality two-layer with through-hole plating, soldermask and silkscreen. The dummy load design is just 20x 1K resistors in parallel to make 50-ohms, sandwiched between two PCBs... I don't think it gets much easier than this... and we also receive very good feedback on the assembly and operating instructions for all the kits, which are very comprehensive. Additionally for people than run into difficulties we have a QRP Labs email group at https://groups.io/g/QRPLabs , and direct email support from QRP Labs, as well as a free repair service as the last resort. You need only type "QRP Labs" into Google to get an idea of the great reputation the kits have earned. Blogs, web pages, videos, etc. Regardless of whether I can understand your reasons, QRP Labs wants customer satisfaction, and clearly you are not satisfied. Gerald. Therefore I have refunded in full, the $22 you spent ($8.50 x 2 for the kits, and $5 shipping). I trust that th

[Elecraft] KX2 with KPA500 and KAT500
Happy new year to all! I am curious to know if anyone on the reflector has experienced this issue. I occasionally like to use my KX2 at QRO power. I have the ACC output of the KX2 interfaced to a KPA500 which is interconnected to a KAT500 antenna tuner. When the tuner is not powered, the KX2 and amplifier work perfectly with over 150W output. When I power up the KAT500 and switch the amp to “oper” mode, the receiver in the KX2 desenses rendering the combination inoperable. When switching back to “STBY”, the receiver is back to operating normally. Turning off the power to the tuner allows normal operation. Not sure what is happening. Any suggestions? Tnx. [Elecraft] Device data retention times
Hi All, I'm constantly doing projects with microcontrollers and programmable logic devices. I've been doing this long enough that I've got devices that have "lost their memory." Things that I designed and built decades ago no longer function. Over time flash will lose its mind, I guess just like we do. At some point in time that will happen to our lovely little radios. From an operator stand point we can re-flash the firmware as long as the boot code is functional. Does Elecraft have a provision in the radios that will allow an update of the bootloader to keep it fresh, so to speak? That is without sending it back to the factory? I know a lot of people don't keep stuff forever, but I pretty much do. In old radios we replace caps, and a few other parts that age. With programmable chips you need and ISP, unless there is another provision. 73 Len __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [KX2][KX3][KXIQ2] Best Base Station: KX2 vs KX3
+1 to this: "Please reply to this thread if you're interested in having Elecraft expose RX I/Q on the KX2." I've owned a KX1, currently own a KX3/PX3 and a KX2. I don't have a lot of space for my radio gear and am a big fan of the small form factors. I've had more fun with my KX3 than any other radio I have used. I've become highly dependent on the PX3 and wish I had the same option to use one with my KX2. For me, having the I/Q on the KX2 would not eliminate need for my KX3. I still want the extra band coverage of 160 and 6 meters, I also use my KX3 on 2 meters. Having I/Q on my KX2 would greatly expand the flexibility, and let me operate in a similar manner to my KX3. 73 Len __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Love my KX2!
I have been reading the many comments and questions relating to the virtues and (in)capabilities of the various rigs now available. In my shack I have the complete K-line including the KAT500 tuner and SP3 speaker. All great equipment, but since receiving my KX2, it is my “go to” radio! It is the first rig I turn on, and the fun and exhilaration of making contacts with a radio having so much capability in such an astonishingly small package renews the excitement I had when I first started hamming 56 years ago. The receiver is very quiet and sensitive, and with the DSP filtering, I don’t think I am missing anything. I can unplug a few connections and put the entire package in the small case and take off. Not saying that I will be giving up my beautiful K-line anytime soon, but for me, this little gem is a winner! Re: [Elecraft] New products
As a developer of both hardware and software products that use touch screens I have mixed feelings. My number one gripe with soft environments is the tendency to continually modify the environment and jam more and more functionality into the same footprint. This either needs to be done with width or depth, take your pick. Both Apple and Windows are horrible abusers. Every new version of their software requires users to hunt down functions that have been moved or crammed down. Functions that were originally intuitive are now obfuscated in the name of progress. Lack of consistency is extremely frustrating for most users. Today because of the ease of soft environments it seems that companies feel compelled to continually bring a "new look" to each software revision of their website or product. How many of you think Yahoo scored a home run with NEO? In my opinion NEO is an absolute disaster. But corporate egos won't allow users out. How would you like someone mucking with your beloved radio in the name of pretty progress. I'll take consistency over pretty and modern every time. I'm buying a radio, I don't want an iPhone clone, or an Icom clone, I want my KX3 to look and exactly like the KX3 I bought. I trust the engineers at Elecraft to make acceptable and necessary upgrades for functionality. I also trust that they are not going to ruin a great radio in the name of glitter.. It has been pointed out previously in this thread that all of Elecraft's radios can be easily connected to a computer for computer control. Not everything in the world needs to be integrated, and often doing so creates compromises that are much more difficult to live with and limit the lifetime of a product. I'm tickled pink with my Elecraft products and don't feel the need for them to emulate anyone else to keep me as a customer! We shouldn't be compelled to buy a radio every two years like we do with cell phones. My expectation is to buy a product that will function for many years, and possibly a decade or more. I would rather have multiple Elecraft products rather than one that pretends to be all things to all people. 73 len __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX1 Receiver issue
I have had my KX1 for close to ten years now, and it has been a great traveling companion with lots of fun QSO’s. Two nights ago, I got the rig all hooked up and discovered that no audio was emanating from the headphones. The AF gain control, filter pot, and RF gain control made no difference. I hooked up the paddle and found that the TX is working fine, and I could hear the side tone through the headphones. To see if a loud signal had any effect on the KX1 receiver, I put a dummy load on my K3 and sent some test tones, none of which were being received at close proximity. This problem occurs across all 3 bands. The antenna tuner is working, and my SWR meter show a perfect match. Any suggestions as to where I should start troubleshooting? Tnx. [Elecraft] K3 front headphone jack problem
I have K3, S/N 1884 running latest FW vers 4.48. Also using P-2 and KPA500 in the chain. While plugging in headphones into the front phones jack, the speaker no longer mutes and I am only able to receive one channel through headphones. The phones jack was working perfectly in the past. I checked to see if the config parameter SKR+Ph was mistakenly modified, but the parameter was still set to "NO" I also attempted to load a previous FW version, but this did not alleviate the problem, so I switched back to the latest FW. I noticed on past reflectors that others have experienced this problem, but I did not see any definitive response. I am hoping that I don't have to run a complete re-set. Has anyone who has experienced this problem been able to figure out a solution? Tnx for your input. [Elecraft] KPA Hi Pwr fault additional info
I am utilizing FW vers. 1.02 and connecting to the K3 via the aux bus cable. If I set the KPA500 "PWR ON" menu setting to OPER, the K3 will not show the "KPA500 OPER" on the display and apprently is not syncing. In that state, if I transmit, the amp will immediately go into a Hi Pwr fault. (no matter how long I wait for the aux bus cable to sync). If ,However, I set the PWR ON menu default to STBY and manually switch to OPER, the K3 will properly sync and will display "KPA500 OPER" and all is well. Could this be a firmware issue? [Elecraft] KPA500 fault
I am enjoying my new KPA500 coupled with my K3, and I have set up the K3 to transmit at approximately 25 watts in the "operate" position on all bands except 30 meters. However, if the amplifier menu is set to default to "operate" mode upon KPA500 initialization, I experience an immediate overdrive fault on the amplifier which tells me that the amplifier is not immediately sensing the lower power output setting on the K3.I have temporarily remedied this situation by setting the KPA500 menu to default to "stby" mode upon turn on, and then when I manually switch to "oper" mode, I do not experience the overdrive fault . It would be more convenient to have the amplifier default to the operational state, as designed. I am curious if anyone else is experiencing this situation?? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Pre-set power levels
Thanks to all of you on the reflector who took the time to provide information relating to the pre-set power levels between my K3 and KPA500. Tnx to Guy, W2AV for pointing out that the aux cable may not be seated properly in the Aux port or a potential bent pin. He was right!! I inspected the connection at the K3 and found one of the pins on the connector bent and not making proper contact. I straightened the pin and carefully made the connection to the K3. Now the pre-set power levels are functioning perfectly (nice touch Elecraft), and I am able to make band changes from either the K3 and KPA in concert. I'm a happy camper! [Elecraft] KPA500/K3 pre-set power levels
Hello, I have a new KPA500 now connected directly to my K3 via the optional KPAAux cable purchased through Elecraft. I am attempting to set up the per band power settings, and have the Config: power settings at "per band". I am running the latest FW releases on both the KPA and the K3. According to the FW release notes MCU 4.36 / DSP 2.73, 4-20-2011 * KPA500-TO-K3 BAND CHANGE, FAULT/STATUS, and POWER CONTROL: If the KPA500 is connected to the K3 via the ACC cable (including auxBus and band data lines), the following new features will be available: (1) the amp's band switches can change the K3's band Not functioning (2) amp faults and operate/standby changes will be reported on the K3 display Not functioning (3) if CONFIG:PWR SET = PER-BAND, the K3 will provide two separate sets of per-band power levels: one for use with the KPA500, one for barefoot use (amp in standby). If the amp power levels are in effect, an asterisk is added to the K3's power control display (e.g. "30 W*"). This should eliminate the need to adjust the K3's power control when changing bands or switching the amp between operate and standby. Not functioning This does not seem to be functioning on my K3. The "*" does not display on the power control, and when I attempt to set per band settings and utilize the standby and operate button on the KPA500, the power level functions at whatever power output is set on the K3. Also, the amps faults are not being reported on the K3, and the amps band switches do not change the K3's band! Are there any additional menu settings that I am missing? Can anyone assist in helping me get these valuable features operational? [Elecraft] Firmware 4.18 APF adjustment using shift control
Gentlemen, thanks for adding the APF to the K3 and the quick response to the bug that some operators were experiencing. The APF works great. I did find that while adjusting it when I got to APF 1.0 I heard a click in my headphones that I am using and as I tried rotating the shift control counter clockwise or clockwise that I could here the APF "stepping" but there was no visible indication on the display of it or any receiver audio heard. Just the clicks as I turned the shift control. Turning off the rig and turning it back on brought everything back to normal. 73, Len K3LJ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Firmware-4-18-APF-adjustment-using-shift-control-tp5711904p5711904.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Sneak Preview: New Elecraft products - What?
Eric, All of the people at Elecraft are doing a fine job. The several times that I have called have always been a good experience, even the times that I called with something that I overlooked and should have been able to solve myself. Thanks to everyone out there for a quality product and fine service. We all are eagerly waiting for the next piece of equipment to be developed and manufactured because we know it will complement what we have in quality as well as reliability. It has been there since the beginning - and has not been dependent on any firmware level. This is just a case of hearing the electronics become active. Unlike my stereo equipment which mutes the output until all that switching on startup/shutdown is finished. I actually like to hear those sounds - it tells me that something really is happening. [Elecraft] Need some help on a K1 problem.
I'm hoping that there are still some K1 aficionados out there. I ordered my K1 with the 4-band-filter board. I was not able to get the 4-band-filter to work so I ordered the 2-band-filter (since it's a simpler board) so I could determine if it's a problem with the K1 main board or the filter board. To make a long story short, the K1 with the 2-band-filter works perfectly (40/20M) and the relay switching works. I then finished the KAT and it works with the 2BFB just fine. But here's the problem, I am still debugging the 4-band-filter inbetween using the K1 with the 2BFB. When I plug in the 4BFB there is no relay activity at all when I switch bands. The relays stay in the reset position. I have run out of ideas. Here is what I've done: Replaced the 4MHz resonator. Replaced the IOC with a spare that I have. So far nothing works. I have visually inspected every solder joint. I have reflowed the solder on all the IOC and resonator pads. I have checked continuity between the IOC pins and the relays and they are all solid. I have checked the common connection to all the relays for shorts and opens. I have checked continuity through RFC1. There are no shorts that I have detected or seen on the board (solder splashes, globs, etc.) although I'm not ruling that out yet. Nothing I've done fixes it. Any new ideas out there? Anybody else have this same or similar problem? The relay switching has nothing to do with the RF paths, these appear OK when I manually apply 1.5V to selected relays for the band configuration. RF is getting through as it should on each of the 4 bands. Oh .. yeh ... I am not getting any error codes on the display either. And when I switch the bands with the front panel switch, the display changes but no relays activate. 72, LEN, K4IWL www.qrz.com/k4iwl K2 #848, K1 #1221, Wilderness Radio Sierra (another Wayne rig), Every RockMite imaginable, and a 15M HiMite. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K1 PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
After following up on a hunch, I came to the conclusion that the only thing it could be was R30 (3.3 ohm from Q6 emitter to ground). This would prevent Q6 from conducting. I went to the QRP parts box and found some 2.2 Ohm resistors that I keep to bias the output transistor on my RockMites. Close enough for government work! I pulled R30 and tested it with 2 ohmmeters and it showed an open on both of them. I tack soldered the 2.2 in its place, went into the K1 menu, set the output to 3.0W, and put it in tune mode. VOILA! 3.0W showed on the LCD. IT'S FIXED! I kept looking at Q6 and all the components over the past few weeks but kept ignoring R30 because when has a resistor ever been open in a QRP rig? The only thing I can tell is that it was open when it came out of the box. Sorry to get eveybody all set to tell me all the things I need to check. It works! Now I can install the KAT1, KNB, KBT1, and align the 4-band filter board. Unless somebody says something different ... I will keep the 2.2 ohm in place instead of running out to the local electronics store and getting a 3.3 ohm. 73 to all, N.T. [Elecraft] I NEED HELP WITH MY K1
I have a K1 problem. maybe there's someone out there that can point me in the right direction. First some background: I am an experienced developer and troubleshooter and have designed and built many rigs as well as many kits including the K2 #848, the Sierra, and dozens of RockMites and more. But this K1 has me stumped. Here are the symptoms: No RF output. RF present on base of Q6 but No RF on the collector of Q6. The receive side appears to be working OK. I have traced the RF from the VFO through the filter and all the way down to the the driver. By the way, I have replaced Q6 [2SC2166] just in case. I originally ordered the K1 with the 4-band filter last year but due to other priorities didn't start building everything until around April of this year and have been working on it when I have had the time. But now I am devoting full time to it. My intitial testing was blocked because of problems with the 4-band filter relay switching so decided to order the 2-band filter (since it is a much simpler device) to help me debug the K1 problem. This has worked so far and the 2-band filter is working normal. Once I get the K1 problem fixed, I will work on the 4-band filter. The test equipment I am using is a Tektronix dual-trace scope, digital voltmeter, two RF probes, XTAL generator (adjustable output). My current testing is using 7030 KHz input and output. STARTING ON PAGE 5, APPENDIX E, K1 MANUAL, REV F. Here are my results from the signal traces. Although the receive side seems to be working OK, I am also including the signal trace. [Elecraft] K2/100 for Emcomm Use?
Hi John, I have a QRP K2, and just for the fun of it, I took it along on a SET for Boulder County, CO. I was testing HF PACTOR in the mountains west of town where there is no VHF repeater coverage. I had a 100 W mobile rig and a screwdriver antenna on 80 meters chirping away less than 50 ft from a very low doublet in the trees. I had the K2 on 75 meter phone connected to the doublet. Using 5 W, the K2 was getting into the Red Cross and other HF stations around the state with absolutely no hint of interference from the big rig down the band (3928 vs 3615 kHz). While I was moving traffic on Pactor, the other guys were using the K2 to relay traffic between stations that could not hear each other very well. (Ironic that the QRP rig was the only one that could hear everyone and be heard by everyone!) With this and a lot of other backwoods experience with the K2 under my belt, I would heartily endorse the K2/100 as a very competent emergency rig. It performs well in extremes of hot and cold, it is easy to operate, has good audio (xmit and receive), and the receiver is easy on the batteries. 73, Len, KDØRC - I would like to hear comments from anyone out there using a K2/100 as part of an emcomm "go kit" or for portable or fixed emergency communications. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
