This afternoon I finally got the time to see how this antenna plays. I was a bit disappointed. Here is the setup: KX3 (with internal tuner), 25 feet of RG-316 with ferrites on the radio end, five foot tall carbon fiber tripod sitting in the middle of my back yard; no other resonant antennas on the property. The KX3 / ATU WAS able to find a match to the antenna on all the bands. At first I thought that was great. But being a bit curious, I disconnected the coax and hooked up my Rig Expert AA-55 Zoom. Ughhh. On 40 meters, with the long radial attached and suspended 4-5 feet above the yard, the antennas was resonant at 7.574 MHz - that’s a tad more then the +- 200 KHz stated in the specs. And quite ugly for where I wanted to operate: 7.052 KHz. So, I added the shorter radial, also up above the ground, going a different direction. NO CHANGE to the resonant frequency. Yes, I did have the AXE1 installed, and yes I had the switch set to the “20m” position. OK, let’s give 30 meters a try. I set the switch to “17m”, and the Rig Expert to 10.116 +- 5 MHz. Yikes - the thing was resonant at 8.070 MHz - very long way from 10.116. Adding the short radial changed the SWR at that frequency from 1.46:1 down to 1.33:1 but no change to resonant frequency. 20 meters didn’t fare much better. I set the switch to “20m”, removed the AXE1, and connected only the short radial. Minimum SWR of 1.34:1 was seen at 15.330 MHz. At my desired operating frequency of 14.052, the SWR was 6.9:1. Not a very good SWR but one that the ATU can easily handle. 17 meters was just as bad. With the short radial it was resonant at 19.780 with an SWR of 1.15:1; at 18.116 it showed 6.83:1 SWR. Again, something the ATU can deal with, but….. While I understand that this is a compromise antenna and it isn’t going to be spot on on every band, I’m a bit frustrated in what I’m seeing here. With five watts output into those kind of SWRs, I’m sure I’m loosing quite a bit of my power in heating the coax and the modules in the ATU. I hesitate to go out on a maiden POTA activation with an antenna showing close to 7:1 SWR at my operating frequencies, even though the ATU “corrects” that. Any suggestions here? Is this “normal” for the AX1 and AXE1? Have you tried measuring the AC input voltage drop, no load versus key down max? A Kil A Watt meter is a handy instrument to have for this. Re: [Elecraft] Lightning concerns: Was: K4 Remote: My QTH vs. a friend's, many miles to the north
Lightning is like wildfires which burn some houses or land but not others. There is no rhyme or reason why some devices are not damaged and other are. I suspect that most items were damaged but not made inoperable. Couldn't the argument be made that the computer or USB hub should do more and at what cost? You are quite lucky that your entire shack was not destroyed. I don't believe Elecraft should be blamed here, nor do I believe they need to do anything. There is no preponderance of data that shows the Elecraft interface is more or less susceptible to this damage. My power supplied failed and produced an over voltage situation which damaged my K3. It it the fault of the PS maker or Elecraft? These situations are why many of us have Insurance that cover these events. This coverage could be a homeowners policy or policies similar to the ARRL insurance program. These coverage's may or may not be available to everyone however. It is the station owner that is responsible for lightning protection (or other environmental risks); not Elecraft or most any product vendor of any type. To require more, would cost more (for the hardware and for the liability risk that the company would have to endure). The area/s missed in the protective system design, can be demonstrated by a nearby or direct hit (induced voltages and current can be almost as damaging); as you already found (and it's EASY to miss an entry point, no blame intended). The ARRL has a good amount of simplified how-to in the book "Grounding and Bonding" but several readings may still be needed for understanding the content. There are other good resources (Motorola has one, so does the cell phone industry; each is excellent but best used to induce sleep, they are intense and technical and reference various applicable laws). It's not all about lightning but static dissipation as an energy source. That static source may also be dust, wind, snow, or rain (yes, water). Diverting that charge OUTSIDE the building (shack) to GROUND is the basic plan but it must also include EVERY entry point (cable TV, phone, DSL, antenna, rotor, control cables for antennas, mast, satellite dishes and tower). Using several ground rods as part of a system is common BUT they must all be bonded to each other AND to the one common safety ground of the building (US and other countries require this, by law). Use of water pipes is no longer code, in the US (because PEX and PVC are common, defeating ability to take to ground). From your description Jorge, it sounds like you did it correctly, but missed an entry point. Now you'll have to replace parts, sadly. Let's limit any more, to Elecraft specific topics. This one has wandered well afield of Elecraft. 73, Rick nk7i On 5/4/2024 9:21 PM, Jorge Diez - CX6VM wrote: Hi Dave I have a panel like yours, each antenna to a discharger, on a copper sheet. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 no PC comms
My KXUSB cable suddenly went QRT a few months ago necessitating getting a replacement. I initially thought the chip on the board had blown up, but it was OK. [Elecraft] KAT500 no PC comms
Elecraft is taking a l_o_n_g time to repair the USB port on my K4d, so I bought a used K3 (non-s) as a backup rig. It works fine, and interfaces correctly with my KPA500 and KAT500. (The KAT is already configured for all frequency steps on all bands, and I can hear the KAT relays click when I change bands.) But the KAT Utility doesn't connect to the KAT. I'm using the same Computer interface cable plugged into the same USB port on the PC. Windows Device manager says it's working. With a K4, does the KAT communicate with the PC via the K4's USB connection, which he K3 doesn't have? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Fault 6 and loss of power control
Hello Pete, This happens to my K3S regularly. After it spent WAY too much time back at the mother ship three years ago without them being able to reproduce the fault (RSA #10260, in case Keith is reading this), I was finally able to narrow down the cause. I can reproduce the fault by going from FL2 to FL3, FL3 to FL4 or by exiting the QRQ mode. This makes me think it may be a firmware problem. I'm running v5.67, the most recent version. I can't figure out how to force a load of an earlier version to see if that cures the problem. Has anyone else experienced this? It does appear that this radio has had all the updates performed. So, I am at a loss ... I have dog-eared the manual and have searched the mail archives for clues and procedures to enable the sidetone but I have yet to be successful. Re: [Elecraft] Manual For KX2 S/N 01888?
The manual currently available at Elecraft.com will be completely applicable to your KX2, especially after you upgrade the firmware to MCP 3.02, DSP 1.52. The only hardware mod that there has been in seven years is a PA transistor mounting mod that you can find described on Elecraft.com. That was incorporated into KX2 production before your KX2. Elecraft has not been energetic about adding instruction about certain things like decoding ATU.DATA, even though that would be a very simple addition to the manual. Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3
My K3s has this problem, but it only happens intermittently. When driving the KPA1500, there would be a spike of about 70w. Drive level was between 20 and 25 watts. The K3s spent three months at Elecraft and they could not fix it. I finally discovered two things that caused the power spike: 1. Exiting the CW QRQ mode; either by turning on RIT or by using the menu. 2. Narrowing the passband from XFIL 3 to XFIL 4 (1000 Hz to 400 Hz in my case.), either with the XFIL button or the Width control. These appear to be the only things that cause the power spike. This leads me to believe it's a firmware problem (v 5.67, the most recent). I tried going back to an earlier FW version, but could not figure out how to load it. It doesn't look like there will be any new FW updates for the K3 series. --- 73, Mike Cizek WØVTT -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of N2TK via Elecraft Sent: Saturday, 20 May, 2023 15:51 To: m...@sj2w.se; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3 I had the same problem with the K3/KPA1500 combination. After that the spike is a lot smaller and not much of an issue. Anybody have any ideas of what this could be because of? For the benefit of others, the earphone cups of the CM-500 are 98.4 mm (3 7/8") x 93.6 (3 11/16") - a standard 100 or 105 mm (round) headphone pad should work. However, since the screws holding the headphones together are located under the cushions and the cushions are clamped between the face and cup of the headphones, cushions with built in foam screens will not work. I don't remember which lists I've posted this to, so apologies if it's a dupe. Hello Pete, Plug in the USB cable between your K3 and computer. The computer will (should) recognize the K3 sound card as USB Audio CODEC and install drivers automatically. In WSJT-X, select USB Audio CODEC as your microphone and speakers. The easiest way to power the KAT500 when using it with the 7300 is the have to K3S powered up but not connected to any of the antennas. I do it differently. I power the K3 (now K4) _and_ the KAT500 from a single Alinco DM330MV power supply. Whenever the power supply is on, the rig and the KAT are both powered, but the rig doesn't need to be switched on. It seems like you could do the same thing with your two rigs. Turn on the power supply, then choose the rig you want to use. No need to turn on the K3 just to power the KAT500. One other consideration: The K3's 12 VDC output is rated for 1 amp, and the KAT500 specs say it draws a maximum of 1 amp. I'd be wary of being that close to the limit. Bottom line: You can't go wrong if you power all equipment from the power supply. 73, Mike N4CF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KPA500 Low 40m Output
Greetings, Working on a KPA 500, #2441. All bands except 40m work properly; 40m output is about 125w. Testing into a dummy load: Drive level: ~20w for all bands. Voltage and current levels all seem normal; lower PA current and slightly less voltage drop on 40m. SWR back to exciter (K3s) is 1:1 on all bands Output SWR on the internal meter reads 1:1, even on 40m No fault messages on any band, no smoke, no funny noises. The most obvious (to me) culprit is the 40m low pass filter. I was hoping to find an obviously fried cap or coil, but everything looks OK. A web search shows some folks reporting similar single-band faults, but they all have obviously fried components (usually a cap) on the RF or LPF boards. Is there anything else that could be at fault, other than the LPF circuit? It appears everything else is common to all bands. I'm not sure my test gear is sufficient to check the components in circuit. Thank you. 73, Mike Cizek W0VTT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I'll toss in my two cents I have fair-to-middlin' CW skills, and I've operated a lot of CW contests. I was surprised and disappointed to hear so many high-speed ops in this year's CW SS. In past years, I've been pleased with the moderate speeds. When I'm operating S&P, I almost always adjust my TX speed to match the running station's speed. it's only a hit or two on N1MM's Page Down key. I figure that's the considerate thing to do. I can comfortably copy at 25 wpm, so that's the speed I call CQ. If someone answers faster than I can copy, I don't hesitate to send QRS. If he ignores that comes back still too fast, I'll just hit F1 to start another CQ. If I can't copy part of his exchange, I'll ask for a repeat. There are plenty of reasons for bad copy, not just speed. QSB and QRM were present last weekend. I don't need to explain why I asked for a repeat! One final comment regarding dupes. The contesting club to which I belong has a mantra: "work all dupes!" There is no penalty, but there is the possibility that one op or both busted a QSO, so the second one is insurance. Just work 'em. you might take small time hit, but how much time would you spend sending B4 or DUPE, then explaining to the other op why you won't work him again? -- 73, Mike N4CF Louisa County, VA USA Elecraft K4D / KPA500 / KAT500 Carolina Windom up 45' http://n4cf.mdodd.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

On my former K3s (and new K4d) I used the built-in USB connection -- no RS-232 anywhere. It works fine. I too have a WinKeyer USB with its separate USB connection to the computer. The point is, almost a year ago I purchased a KX2-shack-in-a-box kit and it came without a mic (it was purchased and paid for as part of that kit) and I had to inform Elecraft once it arrived that I was shorted a mic.) Nothing in the paperwork nor any communication before it arrived stated it would be arriving w/o a MH3 mic, so this was a surprise. I even have an email from Wayne from January 10th,2022 that states (in part) ".We should have MH3s back in stock in several weeks. Will that suffice?..." It's a long way from early December 2021 when I finally was invoiced (after I submitted my purchase request in October or November) 2021 and finally paid for my KX2 shack-in-a-box kit (which I love by the way_) (or even Jan 10th, 2021_) All I am saying is..there has been zero communication like "we know we owe you a microphone and when we get them you'll be on the top of the list when we get them.) ZERO. All I have is a couple (now very old) emails from Wayne from early January that "it must have be an oversight" (which I accept; Hey - nobody's or any company is perfect) I get it. I accept the oversight. I accept the backorder. I check the Elecraft site for shipping status. I know they don't have them. I deal with electronic parts and service over 11,000 devices as part of my everyday job. I communicate with my "customers" Do I know that THEY know I am owed one? Well, not really. I have (now old) emails from January from Wayne-that's it. I know he has much bigger fish to fry than some mic for a New Brunswicker on the other side of the continent. I know it won't be Wayne that (hopefully) eventually boxes up and ships me a mic. It's whoever keeps track of old, long since departed orders. If I am going to wait nearly a year (or maybe more), it might've been nice to get an email every 4-5 months from a shipping/receiving/purchasing/billing dept staff member saying "we haven't forgot about you". As of now, myself and all others that I've been in touch with(on this particular issue), have rec'd nothing. We don't know if: The person boxing up the KX2 kits didn't know there was supposed to be a mic included or They boxed up the kits anyways to get 95% of the product out the door to waiting customers or Even if they have record of the folks who have complete kits vs kits missing mics. or Something else. We just don't know. Communications have been non existent from the shipping dept (ever) and none since Jan 10th . 2021 (from Wayne himself, who seems quite knowledgeable and friendly btw) Sincerely, Mike VE9AA Oh, and lest anyone think I am mad. No , I am not mad. Overall I am very happy with my $10k+ worth of Elecraft products. It just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling to maybe order a K4HD (or two for SO2R) when the time comes. == That isn't the point at all, it isn't what I said, and you know it. I simply believe that the folks who have paid for stuff many months ago should be kept regularly informed ... directly, not via word of mouth. It's not expensive for Elecraft to do so. They just have to care a bit more. They know exactly what the status of everything is at any point in time. I guessed that but I hope the lack of the Elecraft MH3 isn't preventing them from using KX2. I know what I would do. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Amplifiers are now shipping from Stock
Carl Yes, I totally understand. If I went to the Elecraft site today and wanted to order an MH3, it's on backorder. I get it. I would not be allowed to order it. You may be missing the point. Some of us have ordered and already paid for the KX2-shack-in-a-box which *INCLUDES* an MH3 microphone. In my case, in a month or so it'll be about 1 year since I've paid for this. I am not sure if I could've/would've not ordered the Kit or not if they had told me it would not ship complete, but it would've been nice to be given that option. As it was, it showed up incomplete. Seems like a small complaint, I know, but I've rec'd a number of private emails already from folks in similar situations, some not as lucky as myself (I own multiple radios). I've found in my life, usually "honesty is the best policy" and especially being a ham I believe "communication is key" (in life, business, etc.) Happy Thanksgiving everyone ! [Elecraft] K-POD LED 4 control
The P-POD Owner's Manual says on page 11, that LED 4 is always under user control, and KPLED4ON; turns LED 4 on. On my K4 I assigned KPLED4ON; to K-pod.7T but pressing F7 on the K-POD does not turn on LED 4.
