[Elecraft] K4 + Winlink

2021-04-30 Thread stephen shearer

Is This A K4 Problem??

THIS was on the FSARC email server today...

"From Steve Waterman, the WL2K guru, that fully software-defined radios,
like Flex, have had handshaking timing issues with VARA, and with SCS
Pactor modems.

Flex and SCS have firmware upgrades to improve handshaking speed when
using Pactor.

Improvements to the VARA software are imminent, if not already released. "

73, steve Wb3LGC

I don't have problems with my KX3 (zero delay), why would the K4, just
asking...

Yes, I saw that and the " After that you will start to see the the order
date that we are shipping change much more quickly. "  I am sure I can
find another holiday (Fathers Day) between now and my shipping date.  I
"need" matching monitors and a nice desk to go with the K4D and the PN50

We had a huge surge of orders on May 17th from both Dayton, on-line and

these orders. After that you will start to see the the order date that we

[Elecraft] KX3 PX3 PSK31 SPLIT

2021-04-03 Thread stephen shearer

OK,  I tried...

Can I set up the internal PSK31 for split?

I tried, the best I could do is RIT.
It would be nice to TX and have split to tune RX.
PSK31 works, but is touchy.  It would be nice to leave the TX freq alone
(so the other station doesn't have to chase you) as you move the RX freq
to keep any lock.  Stronger signals "seem" to less of a problem.
BTW, the PX3 with keyboard is very nice for digital modes as "function"
keys provide text memories.

(has anyone else made use of this feature?)

Decode ON (for one) makes SPLIT N/A ??

Anyone tried this on K4?

OK, I would like to see for the K4, a built-in APP that will adjust all
three by (speaking the phonetic alphabet ?? or other) and specifying
wide, normal, or DX.  Well, I can dream.  I have a couple of different
headsets and even from Heil, they all have different elements.  Need
different settings.  How nice (for Field Day for example) to be able to

"I Think" some of the communications from Elecraft are "hung up" with
the Ferengi print from the online event keeping Elecraft from
re-publishing any of the online event communication until the end of the
30 day "hold".  If I was running the online event, I would want
exclusive "use" of any publications for the full 30 days.  So, 16? Apr...

Yes, I could pay my $10 and see all the doc.  I was unavailable during
the actual event, so I didn't sign up at all.

The last I looked, the KX3 is back ordered, too.

I would not mind an additional 6 month delay, IF I was told it was
because Elecraft was moving to TN so that they could save 10% over
current cost/taxes in CA.  I don't expect a move to happen. So, 60 days
till the end of May, can they do it?

I placed my Group 1 order a week or so before Thanksgiving 2019...

[Elecraft] K4 K-POD vs KX3/PX3

2021-03-15 Thread stephen shearer

OK, I own a KX3/PX3 and have a K4 on order.

I like my KX3/PX3 and I am looking forward to having a K4 with the K-POD.
I "see" the K-POD more as a remote KNOB.

What I do like with PX3 is the ability to use the programmable  keyboard
function keys (or any key you program) to either provide a macro
function or a "send text" function and having 50 of each type.   This
function is in addition to the message buttons on the KX3.  I "can"
operate a CW/RTTY/PSK contest exchange with serial number with just the
KX3/PX3 and a USB keyboard (and paper log sheet).  No computer required.

Will the K4 have this same function?  I may have missed it.  If the KX3
can do it, it should be "easy" for the K4 to do the same...

I can see the logic of not having function keys for a USB keyboard.  If
the K4 is being used for ANY contest or expedition, the K4 would "most
likely" have a computer attached running software like N1MM+ (and
function keys for text or macros). As I am not likely to backpack the
K4...  and I probably have answered my own question.

73, steve WB3LGC

I do like the function keys for the PX3, although full function
computers are now about the same size and weight as a small keyboard,
with more functionality.

On the subject of RED LED Headlamps, I have a Energizer - it has two red
LED's + three white (variable brightness) that cam be selected.  I
picked it up at Walmart a few years back.  It was in the $10 - $20
range, I think it was $13..  (cost may be more now).  3xAAA batteries. I
don't find a model number.

As it stands, the k3 is very hard to see if i need to use any front

Placing a light behind me has worked for me but at times the critters
wander away from the light and use me as a target for harassment.

Anyone found an alternative to what I have tried?

Yes, still 32 TPI...

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

The KX3 is my favorite of my HF radios right now. But one of my annoyances
is the internal battery limitations.

I always wind up carrying an external 6_Ah or 10_Ah LiFePo4 battery into the
field when I use this radio, an external charge controller, and solar panel.
It's not a big problem, but it also should not be a big project to improve
this situation. The KXBC3 has enough real estate to include a lithium
battery charger, and even a solar charge controller in its space. The amount
of battery energy that could fit in-place of the NiMH cells could
approximately triple the capacity of the AA cells.

So I have these questions:

1) How many of you out there might buy an upgrade which replaces the
KXBC3 board with a lithium battery manager, and a associated battery pack?

2) Are there any 3rd parties already making anything like this?

Re: [Elecraft] K4 vs. K4D clarification

2020-10-04 Thread stephen shearer

Terry,

I am most likely at the end of the group, too.
I originally ordered a K4.
I change the order this past spring, to the K4D.
I "don't need" a K4, even.  I have great fun wit a KX3 + PX3 + KXPA100...
I wanted a home station so that the KX3 was my portable station.
I looked at the "D" upgrade as, an "Easter gift" and "the boss" approved.
Yes, I would like to have it for Christmas even if it is a year late.
And it my be Easter 2021...

And as my wife says about buying a dress, it isn't just the dress, it is
also the accessories...
The accessories will be added this coming Christmas.  Computer,
Monitor(s), upgrade the coax, and maybe 500 watts + AC power upgrade
(100 year old house).

Re: [Elecraft] With the K4 coming, is it time to replace this email list with a forum?

I use Thunderbird for my email.
I filter almost everything into one folder or another.  Works great
I filter[Elecraft] and {Elecraft-K4] with any K4 "stuff" in the subject

Thunderbird does this automatically about every 10 minutes.

Folks who "think" that they have a good match and that the nut just needs to be

the correct one to fit. This works for all sizes...right up to, and past, engine block studs and

Ground loops can be another issue.
I was having a "feed back" issue with my KX3/KXPA100 ans solved it

Hello Peter

I suspect RFI as well. I do not have a KPA1500, so my advice is not
worth much, but the fact that the fault only occurs when a signal is
being radiated sends me a red flag.  I had a similar problem here with
my SPE amplifier power output. I was measuring it on an LP-100A
wattmeter.  It turns out that 1.8 MHz energy from the SPE amp radiated
from my vertical antenna and  was getting into a new wire doublet
antenna and coming back down the ladder line into the shack. The ladder
line was about 7 inches from the power coupler for the LP-100A. RF
caused the readings to go wacky and it looked like my amplifier was
going postal!  The problem was high rf fields next to the power meter
coupler.

Ferrite balun heating can be seen with a VSWR meter if you set the power
at some intermediate level, key the amp up with a steady carrier, and
watch for VSWR creeping up.  Loose pins in coax can also be a problem.
They can heat up and disconnect or start arcing. Those problems do not
typically show VSWR creep. They happen all at once usually.

The KPA1500 works fine into a dummy load. (No RFI)  That is a big
clue.   Good luck and I hope you find the problem. Maybe an RF sniffer
would detect the ingress point?

old coax, brand new antenna, old antenna, with balun, without balun.
Always

faults except when feeding the pure resistive dummy load. If there's any
reactance it trips or gives false SWR info.

I would also add, why would a 2:1 SWR trip out the amp at 25 or 30 Watts
of drive? On the regular HF bands I can use the internal tuner to
take out

a 2.5 or 3:1 SWR and it still sends 1400-1450 Watts up the pipe..

To remove any doubt, a 1.5kw or close dummy load at the end of the
coax to

replace antenna, would confirm the amp issue.

Paul, please re-read what I wrote. The 90W figure is with the amp IN

I generally like to run about 1200W on 6m, but even if I turn my K3s
drive down to 20 Watts, it will STILL hard-fault regularly. NO AMOUNT
OF DRIVE from the K3s will stop these problems. If the amp is set to
deliver power it's going to fault on 6m, regardless of what the ATU is
set for (bypass or inline), and the KPA will miss-read the SWR of the

antenna system.

The resistance figure is 50.8 Ohms, and the reactance is -11 according
to the AA-230. The only difference between "works reliably" and
"faults out all the time" is one is a resistive-only load, the other
has a reactive component.

After electret installed in the headset I have quite a lot of hum. The

Any ideas why the hum appears after mounting the electret in the headset?

Agree...  the adapter has a PTT input.  I was planning on making a

I tried the splitter cable (I may have gotten the wrong one) it didn't

(I don't like Heil's choice of a 1/4" PTT connector - would rather see

1/8" (3.5mm) male to male cables connected between the MIC and PHONES jacks on the KX3
and the sound card. To listen to the receive audio and monitor transmit audio, I split the
PHONES output using an 1/8-inch "Y cable" and feed one side to the sound card and
the other side to a powered speaker. For CAT control and PTT via CAT I use the standard
Elecraft USB serial cable from the ACC1 jack to a Raspberry Pi USB port.

In Settings on the Radio tab, under CAT Control, I choose the K3/KX3 or KX3 as
the rig and /dev/ttyUSB0 as the serial port. You'll also want to match the
radio serial port settings, typically, 38400, 8, 1 and none. On the Audio tab,
under Soundcard, I select Default:CARD=device for both Input and Output.

This method may result in some low-level 60 and 120 Hz audible ground loop hum
when AC powered, particularly with the powered speaker connected, but the
transmit signal, at least in my case, is clean. You can certainly use a
SignaLink or equivalent unit for better isolation and level control, but I've
found that the little USB audio adapter/sound card works fine and is a really
compact solution for portable operation!

have mine set at 2 I believe. Once you do this you should be able to more finely control

I don't see (from what I read) the delay being a software/firmware

Re: [Elecraft] Reaching Across the Chronological Divide

2019-12-24 Thread stephen shearer

Walter,

Someone did comment (maybe a different thread/group) about reading
Scouter and Boys Life at the barber shop and noted that ARRL has NO ads
about radio in the mags.  He or someone else noted that SWL mags have no
ARRL ads, either...

I think ARRL has "missed the boat"...

ARRL has flyers for DIY, but no "push" to the youth to go along with it.

Radio Merit Badge does at least provide a sample of ham radio...

A troop in our area uses radios to allow groups of older youth to hike in
separate groups. The fast group (always the youth, oddly) checks in every 15
minutes. If they can’t make contact, they stop until they can. With a license,
they can switch from FRS/GMRS to amateur bands and hike with a bigger gap.

JOTA is on the third full weekend of October every year. This year, we had over
9000 Scouts participate in the US.

https://k2bsa.net/jota-usa-reports/

From running a JOTA station a couple of times, I believe that prospective hams
have just as wide a range of interests as active hams. We need a shotgun
approach with each pellet (metaphor falling apart here) being someone who is
excited about that activity. You don’t have to be an expert—I ran the “send
your name in Morse Code” station and I’m not a CW operator—but you do need to
represent how that activity could be exciting.

Hands on, do everything hands on. No butts in seats for PowerPoint. Anybody
ever say “I think I’ll go home and watch a nice PowerPoint preso tonight”?

Here are some photos from our JOTA station this year. I’m the guy with the
white hair. Oh, that doesn’t help. White hair and beard. Note the empty log
sheet in front of the KX-line. HF was pretty dead. Must do digital modes next
year.

I mean this sincerely. I'm NOT in grumpy-old-man mode, though I can do that
very well. The majority of QSOs with new people are about as interesting,
enduring and deep as a short chat in the checkout line at Safeway. Many aren't
even that interesting. PSK ops just throw on a brag tape and walk away. It's a
pleasant few minutes, but it rarely leads to anything more. It does happen, but
who in their right mind would spend thousands of dollars and hours on the
outside chance it does? The opportunity for superficial chit chat with
strangers was NEVER on my mind at 14 when I got interested in ham radio so it's
a bit much to expect teenagers today to care about that.

Ham radio has always been chock full of quick award-qualifying or contest
contacts. Worked All Continents, countries, states, provinces, counties, grids,
lighthouses, summits, guys named Fred. Go back as far as you want in QST and
it's full of honor rolls, contest results...and SKs. It's nothing new to this
period in ham radio. But ham radio has also been full of interesting challenges
too. It's never been a very homogeneous hobby. I have no predictions except
things are rapidly changing and that will continue in whatever direction those
entering the hobby take it. The Baofeng Techs will change it as much as us
Heathkit Kids did. Change is good.

Re: [Elecraft] Latest rumors on K4

2019-12-21 Thread stephen shearer
I agree the field testing is a very important step for both the rig and
the manual.

A step that should take as long as it takes...
Software bugs are one thing but finding hardware issues are better found
before the  product starts shipping mode.
I am sure I am at the end of the shipping list, so I hope to see the
manual (on line) long before I see the rig...

I don't remember the kickoff of the KX3.
I didn't purchase mine until ~1+ year after shipping started.
I wanted to be sure all was OK...
This time, why wait.
I was thinking about a K3s last year but "something" put me off ordering.
I am glad I waited as all the "options" are included and I can add
"stuff" like the upgrade to K4D etc.

Can "anyone" say Christmas 2020?

I am amused by the creative financing method used by Elecraft. (smart)
Where else would you find "investors" loan the operating capital at zero
interest for almost a year and to have only ever seen? serial 001 of the
product.
You will also note the "1st Shipping Group" is still open for orders
(the real capital).
And "and are targeting our first deliveries for January 2020." has
deliveries (plural) so, at least 2 K4's will be delivered by Jan 31st...
Waiting... as long as it isn't "Christmas in July"...  on the
other-hand, I might be able to convince my wife to upgrade to a K4D, by
then.

One of the purposes of Field Test is to refine the manual.

While the K4 does contain a processor, it is dedicated to the K4 and
its functions, so don't expect anything like a PC or other general
purpose computer.
You will be able to download firmware updates, but I don't know if a
separate PC will be required - I expect it will, so don't throw out
your shack computer.

what I am waiting for is the manual.  It will/should answer many of
my questions.

Maybe before the K4 is shipped?

Like, with a LAN connection on the K4 and an internal PC (of some

or, will I need a separate PC and use the USB port on K4 to do the

There are plenty of single board computers that would fit the need,

I expect to use a SBC for FT8 and JS8, as it works nice now on my KX3

Not one sentence about amateur radio. Not one ad, not one picture, not one

At the very minimum, I would have thought the $1000 I give the League every

Amateur radio is the best way to "touch" the world beyond the earth and to
get a "hands on" understanding of solar physics, electronic equipment,
electromagnetic fields, solar weather, and the harsh environments that are
Intersolar and interstellar space.

Early involvement should come with hands on experiments, internships, summer
jobs, resume builders for college applications, and university work/study
programs in the communications, computer technology and defense industries.

A sequenced set of building block project kits (Elecraft style would be
ideal) that introduce basic principles and result in a receiver, a
transmitter, and an antenna could provide a gateway, and present hams should
underwrite making these available at a low cost and with available "Elmers"
to help. This equipment could be used for radio astronomy, communications,
physics experiments, meteorology, and contesting. Contesting should be
portrayed as glamorous "yacht racing in space" and much cooler than on the
ocean.

I believe we are at a second "Sputnik" point in the quest for the high
ground, and this is the time to grow more modern technologists, explorers,
and entrepreneurs and fewer snowflake philosophers and low information
consumers!

What do you think?

Thanks to the "tin-hat brigade, we have an even worse situation here
in the Santa Cruz Mountains -- no cell coverage at all. For years,
this kept me from a smart phone, but I now know this was a very bad
decision. Many reasons why, but mainly that they work for internet
access on WiFi, they function as a pretty nice "ad hoc" camera, while
on the road (and waiting in a doctor's office) I have access to news
outlets of my choice via my cell data plan or the office's guest WiFi.

We buy our cell service from Page Plus Cellular, a third party company
reselling Verizon service at monthly Pay As You Go rates for the
amount of data that we need. For us, 2GB/month is more than we're
likely to need except when traveling, at a cost of about
$30/phone/month. Accounts are flexible, so it's no big thing to buy
more data in months we might be traveling. The Motorola phones we
bought about three years ago cost us about $350 each.

Not new to computers, just tired of W10 messing my system settings.  I
think I update Mint a few times a week but since it doesn't mess things,
all goes well.

I am currently using my KX3 with a "headless" Raspberry Pi running
wsjt-x for FT8.  I was in the kitchen this morning, stuffing the turkey
and operating FT8 80m on my laptop with a VNC link to the "shack"...
Yes, any excuse to eat.  My parents, parents, parents... did come to the
"new" world on the Mayflower back in 1620, so it IS required and my
father said that his side of the family was here to meet and help the
new settlers...

I have enjoyed the Elecraft rigs.  I built a 10w K2, I have the
KX3/PX3/amp(what ever the number is), and looking forward to having a
"full time" shack radio.  The KX3 combo will become my full time
portable rig, no shack time...

easier to load.
But, I do need to sit down and figure out how to load them as it is more

I may not have been clear.
I am tired of W10...

I do like the idea of initialization files for different usage (contest,

One click to re-set all the settings, although I always just set the KX3
and operated...
Although, it would be nice to be able to save all the settings (mike,

2019-11-27 Thread stephen shearer

Wayne, HAVE a great Thanksgiving...

I wasn't "knocking" the K4 (I have one on order)...

I would like to see my KX3/PX3 etc. utilities for my laptop (Linux Mint)
easier to load.
But, I do need to sit down and figure out how to load them as it is more
than a double-click.

I may not have been clear.
I am tired of W10...

I do like the idea of initialization files for different usage (contest,
DX, casual), if different.
One click to re-set all the settings, although I always just set the KX3
and operated...
Although, it would be nice to be able to save all the settings (mike,
AF, Power, etc) for my FT8 stuff and a different set of settings for SSB...

"Although" pen-paper works, too.

Re: [Elecraft] FT8 DXpedition Mode test.

2018-03-08 Thread Stephen Shearer
Don, OK I had to test this again and look at the manual.  I "thought" I
tried shift but brain cells are getting old...

I used fldigi to see a nice 0-4K audio spectrum.
I went to 40m (shouldn't matter), set DATA A, set BW=4.0, Adjusted FC
from low to high 1.28 to 1.64 with *1.5.
FC ... If I change it over its full range the lowest it goes is
375HZ (and that may be 10dB down?).

If I change BW=3.0, same but High end varies.
With BW=4.0, only high end varies.
If I make BW=1.7, I can move low end up but not below the ~400HZ...

I have latest firmware, MCU 02.90 DSP 01.52

If I use USB...  BW=4.0 FC=*1.5  I have an audio range from 200Hz to
3500Hz ??

I even went back and zeroed my RX EQ.
I guess I can't use DATA A with FT8 in DXpedition Mode.
It won't matter with other modes as only DXpedition mode needs RX at
300Hz...

And I may have been the only one using a KX3 for the test?
*I think the answer is that the problem is not **with me, its firmware
limits...*

The WSJT-X software does other "tricks" to move the TX freq keeping it
within the TX bandpass, 1500Hz +/- 500Hz (it looked like...)  Note, not
relative to "issue", just info.

BTW, thanks for all you do for the Elecraft community!

[Elecraft] FT8 DXpedition Mode test.

2018-03-07 Thread Stephen Shearer

1.   I had fun.
2.   I read the Guide before, during, and after the test.
3.   I started to 20m and was confused.  Partly because I was not
hearing the FOX and was seeing stations below 1K with "R-12" reports.
4. On 20m, it did not help that XE1GK was calling CQ on top of W1/KH7Z
   +/- 1HZ (I did see KH7Z a few times with reports).  Being in W3 I
would not "expect" to hear a W1, but the XE1 was -1 to -15 didn't help.
5.   I saw CQ on 30m.  Since I could see both sides of the QSO, I was
"starting" to figure out the change in freq to below 1K.
6.   On 30m, now that I was calling, I figured out the Split Operation
   Rig/Fake It set-up.  I changed to "Rig".
7.   On 30m, I realized, now that I could "see" the FOX that my RX
   bandpass did not cover 300Hz.
8.   My KX3 with "Data A" has a wide bandpass of 400Hz to 3500Hz and
shifting the RX down was not going to work with the software shift
   for the report, I "guess"...
9.   I changed my KX3 to USB, removed CMP and RX/TX audio EQ.  The
lower RX cut-off would receive the FOX on the assigned freq.
10.   I looked at the KX3 manual C5 for a way to set the passband low
end cutoff while in Data A mode.  Nothing found.  Does the K3s have
   the same problem?
11.   On 40m, I now knew what was going on...  I heard the CQ, The FOX
answered my GRID and the software moved me between 300Hz and 900HZ
(the manual does say that) but until it happens, I was not sure what
it meant. The FOX never "RR73" 'd me.  I was running 10 watts.
12.   On 80m it was the same as 40m.  I was running 15w (with a fan
blowing on the heatsink).  I never finished a QSO.
13.   I had fun and thank you for the DXpedition effort.
14.   I need to see what Elecraft has to say about the "Data A" low freq
   cut-off setting...

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 & thumb drive... SD card works

2018-02-25 Thread Stephen Shearer

PX3 doesn't "seem" to have a size issue...  aka my 128M vs 16G thumb drive.
As I said I would, I tried an SD card (Class 10 and 16G) with a USB
interface.
The SD card worked ("M" showed on the screen of the PX3) for both the
USB2.0 and the USB3.0 interface device.
SO, something is different between the SD card with an USB interface and
the USB "drive" even if both are FAT32 formatted...

See if "we" get any input from Elecraft as I also CC'd a PX3 developer.

that may work.  If it isn't fat32, delete the partition and create a
smaller partition that is.  Then you can create a 2nd or more

I had an issue where a thumb drive was needed to upgrade firmware in
an Agilent digital scope but we didn't have appropriate thumb drives,
so I took a 1 TB USB spinning hard drive and partitioned with the

If you try this and it works, please let us know.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 & thumb drive...

2018-02-25 Thread Stephen Shearer
Yes, not class 10 takes longer...  My thumb drives ARE formatted FAT32,
I checked.  My OLD drive that works is a USB2.0 the new drive is a
USB3.0 speed disk.  YES - I read the manual before I started this topic.
NOW, the class 10 comment in the manual... class 10 is marked on SD
cards.  I am wondering IF the software developer is using an adapter
with an SD card rather than an "thumb drive".

*I have SD/adapter(s) and I will give it a try.*  I just like having
fewer parts to loose when portable...

The problem isn't the speed of the thumb drive (aka class 10) but that
the USB 3.0 and larger USB 2.0 thumb drives DON'T get "seen" by the
PX3/P3 - no "M" on the screen.

73, steve WB3LGC

What is a class 10 SD card?   BTW, my USB3.0 "Flash Drive" is 150 MB/s
(read speed? up to...) and SD cards and USB thumb drives are not rated
the same - different association.

Answered by The WikiAnswers^® Community
Currently, the SD Association recognizes two Speed Classes: "Speed
Class" and "UHS Speed Class." Speed Class applies to SD, miniSD,
microSD, SDHC, miniSDHC, microSDHC, SDXC and microSDXC cards. These are
denoted by a class number within a C-shaped logo. The higher the class
number, the faster the card. In order to bear the SD Speed Class logo,
card manufacturers have to adhere to the minimum standards set out by
the SD Association.
Class 2 is the slowest SD card speed. Class 2 has a write speed of about
2 Mb/s and is suitable for standard definition video recording. Class 4
and Class 6 have write speeds of about 4 Mb/s and 6 Mb/s, respectively,
and can be used for HD video recording. These three classes of SD cards
are designed to operate under the normal bus interface.
*Class 10 SD cards have write speeds of 10 Mb/s and up and are designed
to operate under the high speed bus interface. *

2018-02-24 Thread Stephen Shearer
It isn't a problem of file name..  The PX3 won't see the new thumb
drives.  It reads the OLD drive just fine.  I don't have a problem with
the name as I edit with the contest name in the filename and then
copy/edit to the one the PX3 reads.  works great, except 16G drives - no
go.  73 steve

the expected read from name. It has been a while since I did this, but I
will pull my thumb drive and post the two different names shortly.

Re: [Elecraft] Portable 60-80m wire antennas

I have used a G5RV (+/- 51') with ladder line using teflon 24ga silver
plated wire.
also see http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/randomWire/ ... I am working on a 9:1

Hi folks,

For 40m, 30m, and 20m, the KX1 docs recommend a ~24' length of
sorta-vertical #24 wire with shorter counterpoises as a good field antenna.
I've set that up for my KX1 and KX3, and (unsurprisingly) it works well on
both.

For 80m, the KX1 docs recommend a resonant antenna, and I'm considering my
options. Most of what's written out there about low band antennas seems to
be about durable (and heavy) mobile or home installations. Does anyone have
any experience they'd like to share with backpackable lower band antennas?

Options and questions I'm considering include:

* Build a coil big enough to load up my 24' vertical on 80m, with a tap for
60m. Will that be a long enough radiator?

* Figure out the kite-vertical thing, fly a wire close enough to l/4 that
the KX1 can tune it. How bulky would that be?

* Will #24 wire be a decent radiator for the lower bands, or should I eat
the (not-inconsiderable) weight of a bigger gauge?

* Does anyone have any tips on constructing backpackable (minimum weight)
coils? What's the smallest wire and lightest insulator?

* I'm planning a vertical, as this would seem to require strictly less wire
and coils than any dipole or inverted vee, but am I missing some other
offsetting advantage?

Cheers,
Bruce

Re: [Elecraft] CQ WPX RTTY Contest

2016-02-14 Thread Stephen Shearer

I played for a few hours Friday night.

I used my KX3 with the PX3 and a USB keyboard for S calling and reply
including the serial number using function keys. I used logging to keep
track of the few contacts I made on a separate computer.

I operated on 80m and used FSK D on the KX3 to display on the PX3. I
found having the bandwidth as narrow as possible plus just a tad wider.
I think something about 250 Hz wide worked well and I had very little
problem copying call signs or serial numbers. One time I did have to
wait for his next contact to conform the number. I DID have a problem
with some stations needing a repeat of my serial number as I was running
5 watts (using an 80m horizontal loop - 15' above ground).

With the PX3 keyboard messaging and \c for serial number I sent the \c
twice but if I needed to re-send the \c string, the number would
increment and it is NOT easy to decrement the number. I just sent the
number "by hand". It would be nice yo have \d to decrement the number
before sending again.

With the PX3, tuning was easy and accurate. With CWT alone, tuning
needs to be "somewhat" even on either side of CWT and then watch how it
decoded.

Without the PX3, I would have used fldigi, a USB sound card, and the KX3
using DATA A (because I can use all the modes fldigi has)...

My big problem was on receive. I never got the radio to cleanly decode. It
missed almost all the call signs, regardless of strength of the signal. I tried
using fldigi, which did work, and cocoaModem which seemed to decode better than
fldigi. I ended up using cocoaModem and logging manually. (Next time I'll
probably steal the VGA screen from the P3 and use it as a second screen on the
computer so I can see all of both programs windows.)

I also am using a Mac in the hamshack (I confess, I use a Windows VM and N1MM
plus for contesting). I’ve used this method of RTTY operation on the K3 for
casual operation, and my biggest difficulty was tuning to the exact correct
frequency on the K3 to get solid decoding of the received signal. I’m used to
working with MMTTY on the computer, with the simulated crossed ellipses on the
screen to tune in the signal; without that aid, even though I know what the
signal is supposed to sound like, I have to play with the tuning to get it
exactly correct for decoding (I can usually get it to work OK to make the
contact, though).

With that in mind, maybe your problem with the other station copying you is
the same problem you’re having with decoding: even with the CWT indicator,
you’re not getting exactly on the correct frequency,

Are you using FINE tuning on the K3? That seems to be almost a necessity to
make the fine adjustments needed to tune the RTTY signal correctly for
receiving and decoding.

Hope this helps.

OK, Trying to use KX3/PX3 with FSK D for the RTTY contest. I started

20m decodes. 40m does not work (REV is ON and can not be changed) Both
versions. I don't remember ever seeing RTTY change like Side Band to
USB/LSB ??

I guess I can try to go back further.

Re: [Elecraft] Filtering RFI from LED & flouresence Dimmer Switches

2016-01-25 Thread Stephen Shearer

Be careful. Not all LED's are the same.
Early on I purchased a cheap two-pack at HomeDepot.
Later I was using brand name. I started to have some noise problems -
the cheap no-names were causing problems. I am almost all LED's now.
I started because my YL could hear the CFL power supply buzzing and
LED's are a higher switching freq she could not hear.

I am a scout campmaster, our cabin (and all lights in camp) were
replaced with cheap LED's and we have HF noise problems. I also have a
dimmer to deal with in our cabin. I am not sure the dimmer is a problem
but with the LED's I can't tell. I am thinking about purchasing better
LED's and replacing them... Five to start. I am not sure there isn't a
ground issue (or ground loop?) either. Unplugging the microwave solved
the problem one time but not the next...

The KX3 is great for tracing LED noise - battery power...

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: Re: [OT] increasing CW copy speed: practice slow -v- practice fast

2015-12-06 Thread Stephen Shearer

Sounds great. It should work. I know I need to practice...

I have another problem
How do I put this... Sloppy sending?

I notice (particularly in contests) that many ops run the characters
together. I can't copy and my KX3 can't copy. Good keyers add the
proper spacing between characters and words. Bugs, straight keys, and
simple keyers don't (can't) add the spacing automatically.
I tried the zombie shuffle, all I or my KX3 got was cqtest, others were
were copying fine.

Bill,

We are not discussing entry level code learning. We are discussing
increasing your code speed on receive. And speed is vitally important !
K7QQ is not the only one that can copy high speed CW, there are many of
us out here. Transitioning to higher speed copy can be done through
systematic and regular exercise. I have been a CW operator for over
40 years and it wasn't until fairly late in the game that I accepted the
advice from several high speed ops on how to progress past mediocre copy
speed. ( I will share this below)
First we need to realize there are two distinct types of training for
CW. The first is developing your rote memorization skills for learning
the characters. I recommend the Farnsworth method for this. With
Farnsworth the characters are sent faster than the words. For instance
at 10 wpm each character is sent at 20 wpm but enough time is added to
slow down the rate to 10 wpm. The ARRL adopted this method years ago
for their morse code training materials and the W1AW morse
transmissions. For example when W1AW is sending at 18 wpm the
characters are sent at 20 wpm.

Now to increase your speed you need to approach your training
differently. (which is the subject of Roberts
original post) There are different variations of the training used to
increase your speed but they all have a
common denominator. They all in some form or another introduce copying
at a faster speed (go figure)

Here is what I found to be most effective method for me I learned from
other ops.
Its great to spend time in the saddle copying QSO's in which your
current copying speed will allow, but to really increase your copying
speed you need to spend some time exercising your copying abilities each
day by practice copying ONLY at speeds faster than you can comfortably
copy. You wont increase your copying speed by always copying at the
same comfortable speeds. Practice at a speed where you are only able to
copy one or two characters in each word. Concentrate !! Do this for
only 10 minutes each day. If you are really concentrating you will find
10 minutes is about when you are ready to throw in the towel for the day
anyway Later on after you find you are able to copy about half of the
overall text then increase the speed back to where you can only copy one
or two characters in each word. (This isn't supposed to be easy this is
a training exercise.)
Try this only ten minutes a day and see what happens ! Also this needs
to be practiced regularly, every day and if you miss a day, no worries,
jump back in. Many hams never improve their speed and are content when
they reach around 20 wpm max. In many chasing DX and contest operating
CW activities it gives you an big advantage to be able to operate at
higher speeds. We have all heard the high speed ops during a contest
and marvel at how fast their contacts go by. It is great to be able to
match their speed and grab a contact ! Its not that difficult folks,
just 10 minutes a day of concentrated practice. As you are gaining your
speed don't get frustrated over losing a word or words when you are in a
CW QSO and losing the intelligibility of the conversation, that happens
to all of us and will be remedied when you copying speed is increased.
Lastly, you will with practice, increase your "comfortable" copy speed
to upwards of 30 to 35 wpm and more.
You will be able to really enjoy morse as a language. You will sit
there and listen to sentences and
paragraphs go by in your head with complete understanding. It is very
enjoyable !

it is finding the time and dedication to put in the time needed. K7QO
by the way has won copy contest at over 100wpm, he knows what he speaks.

Just my two cents. Now, back to the practice.

Re: [Elecraft] Soldering crimped connectors is not a good thing.

2015-11-09 Thread Stephen Shearer
I would agree... I crimp most every thing now. The cost of GOOD crimp
tools are reasonable priced...

BUT, a year or two ago, I found crimp lugs I was using on my ladderline
were making intermittent connections and I was having a difficult time
finding the problem.

The crimp was not working with copper coated steel wire... The steel
wire does not compress. Soldering "might" have helped, but I went to

as needed...

While many people recommend soldering crimped connectors, such as Anderson
Power Poles, it is not a very good idea. The reason(s) it is neither required,
nor desired, is partially as follows:

1. A PROPERLY crimped connection creates a molecular bond between the conductor
and the connector that is more conductive than soldering.
2. The soldering process causes corrosion because even rosin core solder is
slightly acidic.
3. The solder that flows into or onto the conductor (wire) causes it to stiffen
and increases the probability that vibration or movement will cause the wire to
break at that point.
4. The annealing of the copper wire is altered which also increases the
possibility of wire breakage due to vibration or movement.

It is absolutely necessary that the proper tool be used for the connection
being crimped. If you are going to use a crimped connection it is imperative
that you have a tool that matches the connector. If you do not have the proper
tool then DO NOT use crimped connections.

Are they for real?
I "was" thinking of running portable KX3 on just 40m in my spare time on

with 1,2, 3 for many levels with just a few contacts. (now that I gave

BUT I take too much "junk" as it is. I guess I could use MON to record
transmission and maybe I can find/make a splitter for the
headphone/recorder.
Don't they use software to compare logs against each other for cheating?
I would think that would be enough?

The pushing a button is nice, but... I can set the LDG tuner to
automatically tune when the VSWR gets above a set-point. Nice, no
"need" to push a button. It will tune with full power drive. Auto tune
is nice. The first Orion's with the built in tuner (LDG) only tuned
when asked (push the button). One reason I went for the external tuner
for the Orion II.

I do like my KX3. It is a little difficult to put the Orion in my

Re: [Elecraft] SideKar vs PX3

2015-09-08 Thread Stephen Shearer

Thank you for the info.

I am still thinking about SideKar.

1) cost - it may need to be a Christmas gift - it exceeds my max per
item spending limit without approval.

2) Elecraft - what are they "going" to do with the keyboard on the PX3
and more important, SideKar is stuck with the DSP decode method from
Elecraft, too. Fldigi has its own processing AND includes AFC. As
pointed out by someone else, the Elecraft DSP does not have AFC to track
psk31 (needed) or RTTY (not needed as much with wider signal). SO,
SideKar is stuck with a good display/logging system but stuck with ok
decoding. CW, why does the Elecraft DSP need a threshold level? For
example MRP40 has AGC and AFC, why not Elecraft? This limits SideKar
over fldigi and has made me think about my direction. For now, fldigi
has better decoding. "you", SideKar, should push Elecraft to improve
its DSP decode of CW/psk31/rtty... I don't expect "you" to have the DSP
answers, either... Minus six for Elecraft (afc+agc*kx3+k3+ks3)=6...

3) Elecraft has never said anything about a logging function with the
pX3 keyboard option, either. Plus one for SideKar.

Christmas isn't that far off and SideKar is still an option even with
the shaky decode issues.
