Looking for a used one in good condition. If you have one and not using, maybe
you’re interested in selling.

Tempting, but I already have one. These are expensive or I'd bid on it for
fun too. Should be an easy fix...maybe.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2020-08-29 Thread Don Wilhelm

Joe,

The telling answer is in your statement "the radio has an internal ATU".
The radio is showing the SWR between the radio and the ATU.
The wattmeter is showing you the SWR after the ATU - in other words, the
SWR of the untuned antenna. So there may be nothing wrong.

Connect a dummy load to the wattmeter output and see what that reads -
should be 1.0.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter maximum Cat5 cable length

2018-07-10 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The cable is indeed not cat-5, but rather 8 individual wires that carry power
and ground one way (to the box) and analog sensor signals back. The twist
action in CAT-5 does not help here at all.
The things to watch for are signal loss due to resistance (shouldn’t be too
bad, depending on the wire and length), and RF pickup. The latter can lead to
bad and erratic readings.
The best advice is to keep the cable as short as possible.

2018-07-10 Thread Dick Green WC1M
Thanks. First real info I've gotten. I said Cat5 because the documentation
mentions it and I believe it says you can use a standard Ethernet cable.

I haven't taken a close look at the coupler circuitry. If it's like most remote
couplers I've seen, a too-long cable can cause a drop in the DC voltages that
carry the forward and reflected power signals. If the coupler does a conversion
to digital, then the cable length wouldn't be an issue. But that sounds pretty
fancy!

the standard cable is not Cat5, it's just a ribbon cable with RJ45's (I
think?) at each end.
Cat5 should work, though, and I'd be surprised if anything less than ~50ft+
would be an issue.

[Elecraft] W2 wattmeter maximum Cat5 cable length

2018-07-09 Thread Dick Green
The W2 wattmeter comes with a 5-foot Cat5 cable to connect the coupler to the
display unit. I need to use a longer cable, maybe 10-15 feet. I’ve searched the

Does anyone know? Does the calibration routine in the W2 Utility compensate for

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Michael,

In general, digital wattmeters have the same accuracy at any point on
the scale - unlike analog wattmeters for which the accuracy is stated as
a percentage of the full scale reading. On a 20 watt scale, a 25% error
would be up to 4 watts!

You might want to look at the specs for that 440 MHz transmitter as
well. If it 2.6 dB or so, getting 2.8 watts out for a 5 watt setting
may be what you can expect.

only 25% of full scale?

Trying to decide if the 2.8 Watts I am reading at 440 MHz on high power is

too low with a spec of 5 Watts output! If it is I can send it back to the
place of purchase to be checked and exchanged if necessary.

There seems to be no problem on the 2 Meter band at only 25 % of scale (5

Watts) readingjust on 440.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Philip
That would depend on what kind of digital you are talking about. I don't
think the W2 reads instantaneous peak power. That usually takes special
circuitry to do . Hint: a digital slug for a bird 43 wattmeter costs way
more than the meter does. Analog meters will not read properly in a
digital environment. Try the radio in analog mode.

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Michael via Elecraft
I just purchased a new Yaesu digital handheld and the power level on the
440 band is low (2.8 v 5.0 Watts), and was wondering if I can trust the W2's
accuracy? Another mobile higher powered transceiver also reads low on all
power levels on the 440 band.

I built the kit version of the W2 and have the VHF/UHF coupler

Why is there a +/- calibration button on the PC interface if the unit is
calibrated properly?

I can send my HT back to be tested and exchanged if it isn't making specs
but don't want to be told that
my wattmeter reading was inaccurate!

[Elecraft] W2 wattmeter lock-up

2016-10-08 Thread JOE
I had a situation where the W2 watt meter would flash the LEDs on power
up, then I was not able to communicate with it via the RS232 cable.
After repeated attempts, I was able to quickly press the LED on/off
button on the software during power up to make it come back to life. I
had to press this button during the power up cycle or the W2 would not
respond. Evidently the LED button got pushed by accident, but it put
the W2 in an inoperable mode that required a site visit to our remote
base location.

Has anyone else experienced this? Probably most people never use this
feature.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter Failure

2015-05-13 Thread Alan

Hi Roger,

I'm looking at the W2 kilowatt sensor schematic and scratching my head
trying to figure out how that could have happened. There are 49.9k
resistors in series with all the op amp inputs, so there would have to
be hundreds of volts coming out of the detectors to damage the devices.
Plus the fact that all 4 op amps (actually two dual op amps) were
destroyed argues against that as well.

I would suspect the 5V op-amp power supply. Perhaps there was a failure
in the W2 power supply or maybe a spike on the supply. A large voltage
transient causing a current spike in the sensor cable might do it,
although it is hard to imagine 50W at 475 kHz doing that.

meter. When I returned to normal HF operation, I noticed the W2 was
not working. I discovered all four unity gain op-amps in the W2
directional coupler were destroyed. I replaced the op-amps and the W2
operated normally again. The W2 wattmeter is not intended to operate
below 1.8 MHz, but it does have a 2KW rating, so one could be
forgiven for assuming it could handle 50 watts at 475 KHz. Next time
I operate on 630 metres, I will by-pass the W2. Roger, VK4YB

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter not reading xv50 output

2014-01-23 Thread John Marvin
I'm not sure I can explain this. But it's possible the problem is a
combination of two possible error sources:

1) I believe the XV50 leds are displaying power based on the voltage at
the final stage, and is not using a SWR bridge to measure forward power.
The W2 is measuring forward power, so if the SWR is greater not 1:1 then
it will measure a lower value than what the XV50 is displaying. Did you
take note of SWR and reverse power using the W2 utility? Since you are
driving another amp I wouldn't expect a really high SWR though.

2) Did you build your XV50 or did you get a factory built version? If
factory built then Elecraft would have properly calibrated it. If you
built it, did you perform all the calibration steps? Since you already
mentioned you don't have a lot of test equipment, you may not have been
able to calibrate the XV50 properly. In particular, if calibrated
properly, 1mW drive should produce 20 watts output, not 30. Also, you
should try to avoid sending more than 1mW to the XV50.

Final question. How were you generating the test signal and what mode
were you using?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter not reading xv50 output

2014-01-21 Thread John Marvin

Bob,

You should try installing the W2 utility (obviously you need to connect
your W2 to a computer via the USB/serial cable that came with the W2 in
order to do this). It shows the SWR and forward power with more
precision than you get with the led front panel display. It would be
interesting to see if you see a different reading when transmitting with
the XV50 vs. when you are not transmitting, even if the value is very
low (i.e. low enough not to light a single led).

Which range led is lit on the front panel?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter alarm function doesn't activate on hogh SWR

2013-12-29 Thread Vic Rosenthal K2VCO
Here is a reply that I received from another fellow on the reflector. I
followed his advice and it solved the problem (it was a direct reply so
I won't give his name or call, but I was very grateful for his help)!

-
You have to set the alarm SWR level by using the “[“ and “]” commands
(no quotes) in the W2 Utility program. [ lowers the SWR, ] raises it.
The initial value in the firmware is undefined, so you have to set it
yourself. You may have to issue multiple [ or ] commands to get a valid
response from the W2. This is a known firmware bug which is being worked
on, as is a few others. Another bug is that after the SWR alarm trips,
you have to push the “sensor” button multiple times to get the W2 to
reset, but if you have set PWR (serial) to PEP in the W2 GUI application
(not utility program), it will reset after one attempt.

Note that this is done using the W2 Utility program, which is not the
same as the W2 interface program. They are both downloadable from th
Elecraft site.

I just ordered a W2 wattmeter, haven't received it yet, and I already want
to change something!

It displays forward power and SWR. When the SWR is 1:1, then the power
output of the transmitter is equal to the forward power. But when it is
greater than 1:1, then the actual power output is the forward power LESS the
reflected power.

I would like an option to display this output power, forward less reflected.
This could probably be done in the firmware, a SMOP as Wayne likes to say.

I realize that this does not tell you the power delivered to the antenna,
for which you would need to know the line loss. But it is still a more
useful indication than just the forward power.

Dr Vic,

Iam using K2 and LP-100A Wattmeter for my remotely controlled station,
both works fine.

The K2 accuracy for SWR upto 2 is enough good (10%).

If you need more sophisticated Wattmeter, use the LP-100A.
http://www.telepostinc.com/lp100.html

LP-100A can indicate the pure FWD power. And many other parameters.

My W2 seems to read about as well as my Bird wattmeter from QRP to QRO is it
as good as a Oak Hills Research's QRP WM-2 no but few are. Is it an Alpha
4510 no but reads close to mine at a fraction of the cost.

I have mine from 1/2w -1500w without a problem for the money IMHO hard to
beat and I have 7-8 around here. It's a keeper for sure right now it's
monitoring my K2 and KX3 I have 2 sensors.

Thinking of picking up the W2 wattmeter to go in the shack with the rest of

I was curious about the accuracy of the meter and how well the peak hold
function works. I've played with other meters where the peak hold didn't
play well. Any input would be great.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-15 Thread Goldtr8 (KD8NNU)
Mine works great and comparing readings to my other equipment it appears
spot on. From barefoot low power on the k3 to my amp on. I use the peak
function all the time as I do a lot of SSB and it just makes me feel good.

I have the 2kw sensor.

It also helped me on 6m as I was running the k3 at 80 watts and only reading
50w peak on the w2. After removing all the stuff between the k3 and the w2
(amp anc) I got my whole 80w at the w2 sensor. So it showed me a 30w
loss in the system on 6m so that to me is pretty accurate.

close for all ranges both of my couplers are 2k's but still not bad for QRP.

I have two W2 meters and I like them .. But I do not rely upon them for
accurate power readings.. My more practical use is to use my peripheral
vision to keep tabs on what's going on while I'm on the air and be alert for
unexpected changes.

I think the Bird 43, when fully calibrated, claims plus or minus 5% accuracy
at full scale on their analog dial.

The W2 is probably close to that, but not quite (maybe 6% at best) ... there
are 17 leds on the 0-20 watt meter scale .. Doing the math, on the 2KW
scale, that's about 118 watts per LED ... so the power has to increase about
118 watts before the next LED will light up, etc., etc.Yes, you can get
a reading of presumed accuracy to the nearest watt if you us the W2 software
and keep a window running on your computer . but the LED display itself is
only capable of reading plus or minus 118 of actual wattage on the 2 KW
scale.. And I've never bothered to calibrate to see what it takes for the
next LED to light up .. Does it change when you (1) just cross the new
threshold, (2) hit the midrange area of the next step, or (3) go the full
distance.Bottom line, it really doesn't matter, but I do not use a W2 to
obtain accurate power readings just from the LED display.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The W2 is great, but of marginal use for someone who has a rig with an ATU
built in.

Indeed, one of the reoccurring mistakes Hams make is to put the external W2
between the rig and the antenna and then wonder why it shows a high SWR when
the internal ATU reports 1:1.

The W2 or any watt/SWR meter must go between the transmitter and the antenna
matching network (ATU, etc.). Rigs like the K1, K2, KX1 and KX3 with built
in tuners do not offer a way to do that.

The W2 and W1 are handy for checking the SWR on a 50-ohm coaxial antenna
feed line. That's best done with the meter at the antenna end of the feed
line, but a general idea of how well matched the antenna is to the feed line
can be had by monitoring the SWR at the rig end.

It can also alert you to any unexpected changes in the antenna if you make a
note of the indicated SWR on each band. Any significant change in that SWR
indicates a significant change in the antenna, usually not for the best, Hi!

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-15 Thread John Marvin
As you mentioned, the W2 utility shows greater accuracy, although just
because it shows values in fractions of a watt, it doesn't mean that it
is that accurate. However, the nice thing about the W2 is that it has a
fairly nice calibration facility. So if you have or can borrow a higher
accuracy meter then you can use that to improve the accuracy of the W2.

Also, I really like the fact that the SWR bridge sensor is remote from
the unit. This allows a lot more flexibility for setup. In my case the
cable was just a little too short, but I wondered if a CAT 5e patch
cable would work. I did a little googling and saw an Elecraft employee
recommending that option. I don't know how long you can go before it
doesn't work or gives bad readings, but the patch cable I used was only
2-3 feet longer than the cable supplied by Elecraft, and it didn't
appear to affect the readings based on a simple before/after test.

Anyway, I think the W2 is a great product. However, Elecraft recommends
that it go between the amp and the ATU (Elecraft says that the accuracy
really starts to suffer with high SWR). That means that it might not be
very useful if I purchase a KXPA100 with the built in ATU.

Bill is 100% right on about the W2,it is most useful on screen for extreme
QRP if you don't have a WM-2 QRP meter. But like I said earlier it is very
close for all ranges both of my couplers are 2k's but still not bad for QRP.

Very happy with my W2. I have the 2KW coupler. Seems pretty accurate and
the LED display is great for casual use. I don't always keep the display up
on the computer but it's very useful when greater resolution than the LED
display is desired.

[Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-14 Thread Stephen Selberg
Greetings,

Thinking of picking up the W2 wattmeter to go in the shack with the rest of
my gear (and future K3 and KPA500some day). I was reading the reviews on
eham, but still had a few questions I didn't see there.

I was curious about the accuracy of the meter and how well the peak hold
function works. I've played with other meters where the peak hold didn't
play well. Any input would be great.

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter accuracy at low power

2012-12-26 Thread jeffrey741
I am looking for information regarding the accuracy of the W2 at low power.
Does anyone know if the W2 can measure in the 1-10 mW range (assuming the
reading are taken from the serial interface) for example with the 200W VHF
sensor? Is the W2 accurate at these power levels? Also can the W2 (with VHF
sensor) be used to measure below 144MHz with reasonable accuracy. I am
guessing not but just wanted to see if anyone has explored using this meter
to make measurements in the 100-118MHz range.

The W2 cannot measure power in the 1-10mw range.

The sensors are calibrated at 144 and 460 MHz. They will certainly work in
the 100-118MHz range but the accuracy is unknown.

[Elecraft] Plotter graph software for the Elecraft W2 Wattmeter.

2012-03-27 Thread Martin Storli - LA8OKA
Hi

I have the W2 Watt meter, it's of course hooked up to my computer so that I can
read the data on the W2 Utility Software.
The software is quite good, simple and informative user interface, but I miss
one functionality, namely a plotter graph function that can plot the PEP values
on a graph while transmitting.
Such plots are useful for analyzing transmitted power.
If there are someone on this list that is capable of making such a software I
think it would be a huge success.
Even better will be if it could be integrated in the already existing W2
Utility Software.
The W2 serial commands are described here:
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/Elecraft_W2_Serial_Interface_Commands_Rev_D.pdf
Other functions on the wish list for such a software would be two sliders that
can be moved around on the plot for reading of values and for calculations of
the average power.

Are there anyone on the list that's up for the challenge?

Best regards,

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter issues

2011-06-26 Thread Mike Short
Used the W2 with my K3/P3 on field day. Other radios were causing the
SWR LEDs to all light up. I was connected to a hexbeam at 35 feet, and
rest were dipoles lower, using 100W. Any ideas on why, other than a lot
of RF flying around? Bands did not seem to matter.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter issues

2011-06-26 Thread Ken - K0PP

Hi Mike,

This is normal. The W2 is merely indicating RF on the
center conductor of its sensor, just as it does in normal
usage. It's more pronounced on the W2 because of it's
ability to respond to really low levels of RF.

Mine does the same thing on several bands and antennas,
depending on which is connected to what. BTW, a set of
Bird meters connected to a dual sensor exhibit the same
behavior, but it isn't as obvious because the lowest range
they can display is 50W FS.

[Elecraft] W2 wattmeter in SO2R

2010-08-25 Thread K5WA
My W2 has a pair of 2 KW sensors which I run in the automatic sensor
switching mode. This way, I don't have to flip any switches as I alternate
between each rig of my SO2R setup. I am seeing erratic readings in the
automatic sensor switching mode that I am not seeing if I manually throw the
sensor switch to S1 or S2. From this result, I am concluding that my sensor
hook up is RF sound and the fault must be in the automatic switching
algorithm of the W2. I get the same erratic readings on the W2 as well as
the W2 software interface application.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

Don,

The greatest reasons for buying Elecraft are:

Great bunch of people.
If you jump in early on a new piece of equipment you won't be
abandoned with no updates. You can update the
equipment, just like the latest release.
The service is better than anything I have experience and others
should take notice.
If you have an issue, you will find a cure.
My Wattmeter had an issue. Two days later, board replaced, fixed.
They even included the return label and postage for
the defective board. (Love the Elecraft. Some
called it Mojo.)
Did I mention: Great bunch of people.

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter question

2010-05-17 Thread dalej
Hi,

I don't post here much so I hope I'm doing this right.

I have a W2 wattmeter coming, it'll be here Friday, it looks to be a
very good value as all Elecraft products are and will match my K3
beautifully. I will have the vhf/uhf sensor along with the HF
sensor. I'm wondering if the vhf/uhf coupler might be useable on 1.2
Ghz? I realize the accuracy won't be too good, but by how much, any
estimates or guess?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter question

2010-05-17 Thread Robert Friess
Hi Dale,

I designed the couplers for the W2 and have not tested the VHF/UHF coupler
at 1.2GHz. However, I would expect very poor performance at that frequency.
It is far outside the design range.

Larry Phipps at Telepost inc also makes the LP-100A that does just what
you want as well...

You get a two line display with a VFT display that is very high
contrast. You get one line for power and one for SWR. You can also
change that to be FWD and REF power if you want. You also get a LOT
more for your money on that in that you can get at all the phase
information as well. If you're willing to hook it up to a computer you
can get a full smith plot of your antennas.

Its also quite inexpensive and comes in a full up solder together kit if
you wish.

and another for the output side at 2500 watts. That way both sides of
the AMP can be monitored with just one press of the sensor switch.
But, thats something you can already do with the current configuration.

The real deal is observing the actual power out of the amp and SWR.
The current bar graph would supplement these windows and provide and

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter wish

2010-02-22 Thread k2zls
Ken,

Thanks for the heads up, but I've already been researching and here's
what I've found. The LP-100a with dual standard 3K couplers comes in at
around $660 assembled and calibrated. It's worth the extra money for
me to have everything done and not have to send it back for fixing and
calibration. The PowerMaster already assembled and tested with 2nd
coupler option at $670. Both units are outstanding and its hard to
choose between them. What really got me going on this is the Alpha 4510
watt meter ($945). Just look at the LED display only and visualize a
display like that on the W2 and you will see what I mean. It's awesome.
The 7-segment displays come in all sizes and colors. Just take a look
at the average digital clock on your nightstand. Same thing.

But, my thinking is that the W2 with 2 couplers, (200 standard) and
2000 watt come in at about $330. How much more do you think ELECRAFT
would have to spend to come up with an updated display. Maybe change
box size and re-arrange the display, but still keeping the current
configuration intact. At only half the cost of it's competition, it
leaves a lot of headroom for development and profit.

I would like to see a comment or two from ELECRAFT regarding
feasibility. It would make all the difference in the world especially
if it could be an upgrade or add-on to the existing unit.

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter wish

2010-02-21 Thread Ken Kopp
Hello Tony,

I have a W2 and I'm really pleased with it and the accuracy
of the readings.

I'm fussy ... probably too much so ... about power readings
and have satisfied myself that the W2 display is -at least-
as accurate as the two Bird meters that are permanently
installed in my station.

I have a low-power sensor on the output of my K3 and a
high-power sensor on the output of my PA, which allows
me to read the power of either / both units.

I find that ... regardless of power level ... the LED for a
given power agrees with the Birds at the point where it
just illuminates.

The SWR LED display is especially handy when tuning an
antenna tuner for minimum reflected power.

I don't think one can ask for better accuracy than this from
any power meter likely to be found in the average amateur
station. 5 - 10% of full-scale is considered accurate in the
wattmeter world.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter

2010-01-03 Thread Bob Naumann
While Bird watt meters are rugged, revered and are the de-facto standard
watt meters in both commercial and amateur circles, their accuracy leaves a
lot to be desired. Unless recently calibrated, and used under specific
circumstances (ambient temperature) their use should be more properly
defined as relative output indicators. Look closely and you'll see that
their accuracy is listed as +/- some percentage of a full scale reading for
the slug you are using. With a 2500w slug, you could be hundreds of watts
off and not know it. Granted, in amateur use, absolute accuracy really does
not matter, but just keep this in mind when measuring what you see with your
W2 or any other modern digital wattmeter when compared to a Bird.

Just because they read differently, there's nearly no justification to think
the Bird is correct and your new wattmeter is not.

I'm very happy with my W2. There was an issue with an intermittent in the
sensor cable but that was quickly resolved. It seems accurate enough to me
on a subjective basis - I have no Bird to compare it to. As far as
resolution goes the computer display resolution does rely on LED's and is a
continuous bar with a switchable peak indication. This is only the 2nd
version of the diplay software and I'm sure it will continue to improve. I
have a friend that has the LP-100A and it's a really nice meter but I'm not
sure I want to pay $120 more for it.

According to the manual the W2 has an accuracy of +- 0.5dB typical

PowerMaster/LP-100A/Telepost class of wattmeters that use NIST-traceable

 those
are $100-$150 more expensive than the W2. If you use the W2 LED display,
your perceived error could be greater than the 10-12%. As an example, if
you really have 100 watts and the W2 reads it 1/2-dB low, then possibility

only the 80-watt LED would light. So this would give you a 20% reading
 error.

Maybe the ARRL will do a review sometime soon.

2010-01-02 Thread Bill Johnson

I have the W2 wattmeter and original production software had some issues.
Those in most part appear to be corrected. I do not have the lab equipment to
measure accuracy, but suggest that when any meter is placed between tuner and
antenna with jumpers there will be a difference no matter what meter one uses.
I think the meter rollout was under pressure to get it to production and not
quite ready for release. I wouldn't be that concerned now. I use the 1.5 kw
module (something like that) and I monitor my 1.5KW amp to the antenna. With
the amp in and out of circuit, the K3 and W2 seem to be close; remember that
jumper length, etc., will cause some difference!

First let me say that I don't pay much attention to complaints about
watt meters. Bird Model 43 watt meters are only accurate to 5% of
full scale.

Those who complain about the accuracy of any LED watt meter can be
completely ignored. The resolution of an LED watt meter with ten LEDs
on a 2000 watt scale only has 100 watt resolution at any point on the
scale. Hmm, that's five percent!

Those who complain about the readings they get from the software (also
subject to an accuracy specification can adjust the readings to suit
themselves via software commands using the supplied RS232 cable.

I like both of my W2's and I don't use them to make critical
adjustments. I use them to keep an eye on what's happening between
the rig(s) and the antennae. Did you ever try to get a good steady
SWR reading on an antenna that was moving around in a wind over 10
mph?

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another W2 if I had a use for it.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter

2010-01-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
I look at those comments about wattmeter accuracy with a bit of
skepticism. Many hams seem to believe whatever their last used
wattmeter tells them. Look at the specifications carefully. Take an
example of the much revered Bird wattmeters, the spec is 5% OF THE
FULL SCALE READING - and that is ONLY right after calibration. That
specification says that if a BIRD wattmeter has been recently calibrated
and handled carefully afterwards, with a 100 watt slug, it can have an
error of 5 watts - and that applies to *anywhere* on the scale. A Bird
wattmeter picked up at a hamfest can be much further off than that.

The error for the W2 (and several other digital wattmeters) will be a
percentage of the actual reading (and not of the full scale reading).

There have been several upgrades to the W2 Firmware, and there will be
more to come. Check the firmware release notes and you will see that
there have been improvements to the sensor calibration. Those negative
reports do not mention the firmware level that they were using nor did
they make any statements about entering the sensor calibration data, so
it may be that their W2s were actually reading low - but that *can* be
corrected.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter

2010-01-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dick,

That is true, but they are often confused - furthermore with any
resolution on a display like a bargraph, it is helpful to know to know
if the LED illuminates just after the indicated power is reached or at
some midpoint value. I don't know, but I suspect that Elecraft has
chosen to trigger the LED illuminating at the low edge of reaching that
power. So on a 200 watt scale with 10 watt resolution, the 80 watt LED
would be illuminated starting at 80 watts and the next LED would not
light until the power reached 100 watts - If the comparison meter is
only off by a watt or two, but is reading a bit high, then yes, the
comparison meter could read 100 watts with the W2 LED showing only 80
watts - for this example, bumping the power up a couple watts would have
the W2 reading 100 watts and the comparison meter reading 102 watts -
so it may *look* like the accuracy is bad when in fact it can be really
good agreement - it all depends on knowing how to read the meters properly.

everyone got the point despite my error.

Don,

Those are good points about the trigger and perception of accuracy of the
W2.

I have yet to see field test data of the W2 in regards to accuracy of the
Wattmeter and SWR indications.

the
Wattmeter and SWR indications.

According to the manual the W2 has an accuracy of +- 0.5dB typical (nothing
about worst-case). This is 10-12% accuracy. Not as good as the
PowerMaster/LP-100A/Telepost class of wattmeters that use NIST-traceable cal
equipment (which should get you more like 3-5% accuracy). Of course, those
are $100-$150 more expensive than the W2.

Guys - The W2 is fully user adjustable for calibration. Please see the
manual for details. Basically, if you wish to adjust its absolute level
up or down to match a favorite 2nd Wattmeter, you can easily do this by
sending +/- serial commands to it from W2 Utility.

My W2 is adjusted to almost exactlyu match my home Bird WM (which reads
differently from another of my Birds...) ;-)

the 1.5 kw module (something like that) and I monitor my 1.5KW amp to the

remember that jumper length, etc., will cause some difference!

W2 WATTMETER I was doing some research and considering buying the Elecraft W2
for use with my 2 K-2s and read the very negative reviews of the W2's
accuracy on E-Ham. I wonder if anyone would care to refute the E-HAM reviews
or offer positive comments about the W2's accuracy. At this point I would
have to choose the AUTEK or OAK HILLS meters over the W2. Considering the
cost of the W2 and Elecraft's attention to quality I would expect a far more
accurate meter than the reviews would indicate. Many thanks.

2010-01-02 Thread NZ0T

I'm very happy with my W2. There was an issue with an intermittent in the
sensor cable but that was quickly resolved. It seems accurate enough to me
on a subjective basis - I have no Bird to compare it to. As far as
resolution goes the computer display resolution does rely on LED's and is a
continuous bar with a switchable peak indication. This is only the 2nd
version of the diplay software and I'm sure it will continue to improve. I
have a friend that has the LP-100A and it's a really nice meter but I'm not
sure I want to pay $120 more for it.

The resolution of the interface software's bar indicators is actually 10 times
the resolution of the LED display. The FWD and REFL bar indicators have 200
units of resolution compared to only 20 LED's on the W2. The SWR bar does
follow the LED's. The textual power readouts resolve to .1 watt at the 2KW
range, .01 watt at the 200W range and .001 watt at the 20W and 2W ranges.

The plus (+) and minus (-) buttons (lower right corner of window) can be used
to calibrate the active sensor to an external source. The value is saved in
EEPROM for that type of sensor (HF 200W, HF 2KW, VHF), regardless of which
sensor is used.

New version soon with 'Always on top' and multiple instances support.

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter Software

2009-12-22 Thread Radio Amateur N5GE
Good evening.

I ran into this this morning after building the second W2 here.

I have 2 K3's here. One that I use on HF and one that I use on 2m
70cm. Although I can run two instances of W2.exe with each instance
connected to each of the two W2's that I have, I'd sure like to be
able to name each of the W2's and select one or both of them with
W2.exe.

Probably the simplest way to do that would be to name each W2 and when
loading W2.exe specify which one I want to load by selecting it from a
list. Selecting another W2 might be done by simply choosing another
from the same dropdownlistbox and adding another stack of display
controls to the main form.

Another way might be to make W2 an MDI application and create a new
child form for each unique W2.

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter

Why would I need a DCHF-200 coupler if the DCHF-2000 would provide low power
readouts? The display unit has the bargraph ranges of 2, 20, 200 and 2000
watts. Why not buy two DCHF-2000 couplers, one between the K3 and linear amp
and another between the amp and antenna tuner. This way one of the couplers
could also be used with a second QRO station in the hamshack. I just don't
understand why a DCHF-200 coupler is needed unless it can provide accurate
power readings under one watt that the DCHF-2000 maybe cannot. Roy Morris

 You're missing something.

The sensors each have an RF input, an RF output, and a CAT-5 cable to the
 W2
main unit. You put the sensors where it makes sense to put RF cables.

If you get two sensors, you can connect them in-line with two different
 radios, one sensor per radio.

You can use the front panel W2 switch to select which sensor to activate
 the
 LED display.
