Re: [Elecraft] ERR TXG No Power Output

2020-08-22 Thread Jim McCook
Problem solved (so far)!  I removed all cables from the K3, opened the
top and re-seated all the TMP connectors. When removing the cables I
noticed the screws holding the RS232 connector were  loose and the
connector was very slightly unseated on the left side.  After putting
everything back together the K3 was transmitting normally again.  After
several on/off cycles during the day it seems OK. Thanks for all the
suggestions.

It was good to hear Eric say all the Elecraft employees are safe!
Hopefully their homes are, too.

Martin, thanks for the suggestion.  It sounds like a likely source.  It
was also suggested to be a bad transistor in the LPA.  His was from
experience, also.  Will first reseat those TMP and other connectors this
weekend.  I'll try to reach telephone support on Monday before I ship it
to Elecraft for a lengthy repair time.  I know the fires have affected
them already.  Very sad.  73, Jim W6YA

Re: [Elecraft] ERR TXG No Power Output

2020-08-22 Thread Martin Sole
My first thought would be that if re-seating TMP connectors does not do
it then possibly one of the 0.1uF decoupling capacitors on the K-REF3
board. Had that on 2 radios now and on one of them twice.

What is the serial number of your K3?
On both of the problem radios I've had this happen almost exactly the
same, fine one minute gone the next, both radios were sub 500 S/N's so
getting on a bit.

Igor,

Try this: attach the dummy load and then tune the ATU into it. Then
switch the ATU to BYPASS for the calibration.
I am not sure why this helps, but it is worth a try. This is only for
the non-S version K3, in which the ATU is not really bypassed.

Igor,

Try doing the TX Gain Calibration manually (described in the manual).
It is a bit tedious because it must be done on a band by band basis.

An email to supp...@elecraft.com may get quicker attention than the form

[Elecraft] ERR TXG in 5W calibration mode

2015-06-07 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn via Elecraft
Just now updating an older K3 with 5.14 using an old winXP machine. The 50W
cal went as expected, the 5w cal gives me an error message: ERR TXG.
starting on 160. During calibration it only reaches 3.3W at 1.1:1 SWR. I can
go an adjust to 5w and it reads 1.0:1 when using a manual key. Tried the
calibration again at this point and it made it through 160 and hung on 3.750
MHz, same readings and issue.

I can set the rig and run CW fine @ 5w. calibration doesn't work. Haven't
tried going back to the old firmware, but see not reason the new FW
shouldn't work. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Julius

[Elecraft] ERR TXG

2012-11-20 Thread km5ps
I have posted this once before but thought I might ask again if anyone
else has had this problem lately that did not deal with the filter
settings being set wrong. My filter setting are correct I have doubled
checked them. I have a 2.7 stock filter with the offset at -.85, which
is what is written on the filter. I have had this rig for about 3 years
now and never a problem on the transmitt. It does not pass the 5 or 50
watt calibration. When in transmitt is shows 0.0 watts out. On the 5
or 50 watt calibration test , it show 1.4 watts out .I have also
been in contact with Gary at Elecraft, but I guess that are gone today
and probably the rest of the week for Thanksgiving. So I thought I
might ask here if anyone knows what else I can check for this problem.
This is what Gary advised me to check and I have done so.
 From Gary-AB7MY at Elecraft:
*T**ry checking the TMP cables inside the rig are not loose, and also
wiggle the TXCO on the KREF3 board to see if it is not making good
connection.**
* *
**Was there a storm nearby with lightning recently? If so, some damage
may have occurred to the PIN diodes in the rig.***( Yes but I had all
cables unplugged from rig except power from power supply and computer)
*
**And:**
**See if the gate to ground resistance on Q2, Q4, Q5 of the LPA is quite
low, or much less than 1K to 2.5K which is the bias pot setting for
those transistors. Also you can touch the tabs of the 3 LPA transistors
when in transmit for 1-2 seconds to see if they are not getting warm as
expected. Do not transmit longer than that with the bottom panel
removed, and use care to not burn your finger.**
*
These are my findings so far. on Q2 4.26k ohms, on Q4 3 k ohms and
on Q5 3 k ohms. The LPA transistors seem to warm up also, as tested
above. All cables and TXCO all seem to be fine also.

I was hoping that some of you tech guys might have idea of what I can
test next. Looks like I will probably have to send it in, but would
like to find a fix, if I can. Bad time of year to send it in with all
of the Holiday's coming up.

Any help would be great.

Hi David,

I ran into a similar problem a few weeks ago. Are you using the latest K3
Utility? Try using the manual calibration procedure in the K3 Manual. Does
that work? I had a similar problem that was related to an updated that the
K3 Utility needed. I think the latest K3 Utility is on the web site now
though.

Good luck.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG in VFO B, now what?

2010-03-31 Thread Bruce Meier
After almost 2 years of use, I finally decided to install some of the mods.
All was well after installing the first few mods. RX/TX full power, etc.
However I did not do any of the calibrations. Tonight I installed the last
mod that I was going to do at this time. Should have stopped earlier. The
mod I installed last was the Improving the Immunity of the Rear-Panel RS232
and Audio Connectors to RF mod. The one that jumpers out the RFCs. Well,
it went well. I put jumpers on L3, L5, L8 and installed the Microphone
Choke bypass jumper on the REV XD Audio I/O module. Then I put a jumper
on L1 on the Remote I/O module. Put the K3 back together and started
testing.

COMMENT: The only mods that I put in had to deal with removing the bottom
front cover and the I/O modules. NONE that required removing the front
panel or KRX3. The Synthesizer mod was already in (for weeks).

I put it all back together and the RX was fine. Did not try to XMIT. That
worked fine last night and I did not do anything that had anything to do
with XMIT. I thought. I then decided to do all the realignments. I
started with the TX Gain. The 5 w part worked GREAT. The 50 watt part
failed with an ERR TXG in VFO B. Since then - -

I reloaded the firm ware: 3.79 - did nothing
I loaded an old version as I never did the TX Gain calibration with this
rev firmware: did nothing
I tried to calibration with my other K3 on the current 3.79 firmware -
worked fine
I then did a save from my good K3 and loaded the config in my 'bad' K3 - did
nothing
I took the bad one apart to see if there was anything I could see that was
wrong - NOTHING VISIBLE
I put it all back together and tried the manual TX GAIN - not using the GUI
- the 5 watt worked fine / the 50 watt failed at about 6 watts again with
ERR TXG in VFO B
I then decided to try the Synthesizer calibration just to see if anything
else did not work. That worked fine.

According to the manual ERR TXG indicates the gain constant is out of
range. Not sure what that means or what to do next.
The book also suggests that the problem could be related to a band-pass
alignment or one of the low pass filters.
So, I tried the manual alignment on all bands (160 - 10)- CONTINUED TO FAIL
with roughly 5 - 7 watts showing in VFO B display area.

The ONLY thing I did in the 100w amp area was to install the diode for 12v
sense. I already tried removing that ... no change.

My Config:

3.79 and all associated other same rev firm ware
K3/100 - 2.7, 400,250 filters
KRX3
KAT3
KXV3 - 2.7 filter

Suggestions?

73,
Bruce - N1LN

calibration procedure, after going in to Tune mode (pressing and holding
XMIT/TUNE for 1 second), the display shows - - in VFO A and 0W in VFO
B. When I press XMIT/TUNE again to exit from Tune mode, VFO B reads ERR
TXG. I have my FLTX set to FL1 ,which is the 2.7K filter, for all modes. I
have run the Synthesizer calibration procedure already, as well as the
Reference Oscillator calibration using Method 2 (zero-beating).

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] ERR TxG

2009-10-03 Thread Mike Kasrich
Ok Ive completed the watt meter calibration and the radio and external
meter both are in agreement now but a new problem has raised its head.
( sort of remember this happening when I first put the rig together but
the error didnt repeat). When I do the Tx gain calibrate the utility
says there is too high an swr (cantenna is still attached 50 ohm
approx) 160 calibrates but the error (ERR TxG) starts there after on 60
or 40.

More thoughts? I wonder if Wayne watches email on the weekend.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG

2009-08-10 Thread Paul Kirley
VE2SHF sed:
One think worth mentioning: I had to apply significant pressure on the
three transistors mounted on LPA board when I installed the lower bottom
panel because the transistors raised slightly above the bottom panel level.
I don't know if it is normal (ensure good thermal contact?) or if I used the
  wrong screws somewhere.

When I assembled my K3, merely having the bottom panel too close to the band
stop circuit board was enough to cause me repeated ERR TXG messages,
particularly when the weight of the 100W module pushed the board closer to the
bottom panel. The band stop board is about the size of a postage stamp,
hanging down from the bottom of the main RF board.

But in your case, you have already noticed a bigger mechanical problem than I
had. I suggest that you contact K3 Support at k3supp...@elecraft.com and
describe the mechanical problem you noticed, as above. Your need to force on
the bottom panel may well be the cause of the ERR TXG.

Any idea of what the problem could be?

Hi Bret,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I confirm I set the 2.7Khz filter as the TX filter for all modes but AM

I left FIL1 slot empty as I plan to add an FM filter at some point (and more
filters for CW/data) later, but according to the manual, that's fine to do
so.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG

2008-07-19 Thread OE5CSP-Chris

Hi,

Gary from Elecraft gave me an important hint and so the rx of my K3 is now
working. It seems, that if you are using just one filter(I use the standard
5-pole filter) it must be in slot 1.I thought slot 3 would also be okay,
but it wasn´t.So I thought everything was fine then, until I wanted to do
the low power calibration again.
I couldn´t calibrate my K3 on 30m and above. On some of the bands I had some
output, but on 20 and 12m there was no output at all.
I did the transmit crystal filter selection again. I don´t have an AM filter
installed, but how should I set it(the K3 asks me to do so...)-I can´t
transmit without an Am-filter, can I?
Any ideas?

You need to select the slot number that your 2.7Khz filter is in. I'm
getting the same ERR TXG failure on all bands with my rig and have low
receiver sensitivity and it just happened all of the sudden during field
day. Not sure what happened but I'll be certain to post the findings
once I get it figured out what it takes to repair it.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG and power problems

2008-05-13 Thread Paul Ferguson
I have K3/100 #757 using firmware 1.94 MCU and 1.73 DSP.

I have been getting an ERR TXG message when trying the Transmitter Gain Low-
Power Calibration on most bands. 80 meters was OK and 20 meters sometimes was
OK.

I noticed my external power meter was showing 10 watts output while the K3
power read only 2 watts. This caused me to go back to the K3 Low-Power
Wattmeter Calibration procedure. In this procedure I was only able to adjust
the power shown on my external meter to about 9 watts when the K3 showed 5
watts. The WMTR LP parameter value shown in the VFO A slot ended up at its
maximum value of 180.

I redid the LP Transmitter Gain Calibration on all bands without any ERR TXG
messages. So far so good except for my K3 saying 5 watts out and my meter
saying 9 watts.

Next I try the High Power TX Gain Calibration. I get ERR TXG messages, so I
take a look at my external power meter as I increase power. As the K3 changes
from 12 to 13 watts, I hear the KPA3 relay click, and my external power meter
shows power suddenly jumps from about 15 watts to 40 watts. Increasing K3 power
more gets me 100 watts out while the K3 is showing only 20 watts. I then try
the High Power Wattmeter Calibration. K3 is set to 50 watts. My external meter
shows 120 watts, but adjusting the menu parameter does not reduce power.

I am using two different external power meters. One is a QRP meter and goes to
10 watts max. The other has a 200-watt scale. They both have seemed fairly
accurate from using them with other rigs.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I just did the Transmitter Gain calibration and get an error message - ERR TXG

I seem to be alignment challenged Even more frustrating is the detail on the
error message in the book says it could affect one or two bands (how about
ALL?) and indicates a problem with band pass filter alignment or one of the low

2008-01-01 Thread Rajiv Dewan, N2RD
Seems like you got the TX GAIN error while doing the initial power
calibration. That is what I had.

Here is what did it for me. (Greg's suggestion on checking REF CAL).

Turn the rig on and wait at least 15 minutes for he reference
oscillator to stabilize. Waiting is important. My reference
oscillator moved by 19KHz in the first 15 minutes. I have the
optional TCXO installed. Perhaps, you do too.

After that, first do the REF CAL with WWV.
Then re-do the VCO Cal.
Followed by TX calibration.

Hope this works for you,
Raj

Carey. You still need to do the TX Gain calibration. That's what is
causing your error. Page 46/47 of the manual. Set power to 5W and hold
TUNE for a couple seconds on ALL BANDS. Then, if you have the KPA3
installed, you need to do the same for ALL BANDS at 50W.

Let me know how it goes.

The reference oscillator is now aligned with WWV - thanks to N0SS, W3FPR,
DJ7MGQ, and AD7FZ for responding so quickly - Tom talked me through it
thankfully.

I just did the Transmitter Gain calibration and get an error message - ERR
TXG - on all bands 160-6. So after passing all the tests/checks during the
build, I seem to be alignment challenged Even more frustrating is the
detail on the error message in the book says it could affect one or two
bands (how about ALL?) and indicates a problem with band pass filter
alignment or one of the low pass filters. Could one of the J-pin connectors
be the first place to look?

BTW, the good news is the receiver in my K3 is absolutely fantastic! One
day, it'll all come together...
