[Emc-users] Rotary axis system
Hi I am having trouble getting my router to run a fourth rotary axis nicely. It does the job. but rapid and cut speeds both seem very inconsistant. I notice that there is a configuration page for such a machine on the wiki site, but it looks pretty complicated. What benefits does it have over simply configuring with the stepper wizard, and if it does improve performance, I would be grateful if someone could talk a complete ejit through setting it up. Thanks for all your help on this one. As a result I have improved performace a bit and maybe a more powerful z stepper driver will make it even better. Tens of thousands of degrees/s/s I didn't go that extreme, but I am likely too low too, I was considering that the table has no inertia since its geared down 90 times, and was more concerned with the added mass of the all steel couplings I had made, which probably weigh about the same as the 425 motor's armature, and are about the same diameter. Some day I should make a new motor mount, sized 2" shorter, and using one of the alu flex couplings which would be ounces lighter. I bought a pag of them on fleabay when I started on the lathe. But I would also insert ball thrust washers for worm end play which I do not now have. That made a large difference in how much movement power actually got to the XY tables. Using those, hidden in the bearing hubs on the xy tables, with factorylike 20 tpi 10mm acme screws, a stalled spindle will break off a 1/4 solid carbide end mill, ditto if it plugs up cutting dead soft alu. I need more spindle revs and horsepower, about 10x more, badly. 200 watt motor, 2500 revs wide open, sucks. Its a toy. Marius Thanks for your replymakes sense. Does G64 p# work on rotary files/systems? It didn't seem to when I ran it. Do you have any tips for reducing the numer of moves in a job? Sorry. If you look at the constant velocity parameters of any CNC machine you will find that the machine has to accelerate and then decelerate again at the beginning and end of every cut or move. Unless you have a very light gantry with a huge acceleration, you will have a slow response. When the cuts are very short the machine does not have enough time to get to the requested feed rate before it has to slow down again. It is one of the pains of cutting 3D stuff. That depends on the type of the proximity switch, they come in two types, rather inaccurately called NPN and PNP. http://sensortech.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/industrial-sensing-fundamentals-–-back-to-the-basics-npn-vs-pnp/ When I wired mine it was relatively easy, as I have a 7i64 with isolated inputs, but even then I initially had the sensors on the wrong side of the input. The result of this was the internal LED glowing dimly when "off" and brightly when "on" (though it did actually work). You need to think of them in terms of current flow, not voltage, as they are often used to operate relays rather than logic. The power supply wires are easy enough to figure out, those need a supply of the rated voltage. Then, depending on the type of the sensor, the output wire will either source current (from the positive supply) or sink current (to the 0V wire) when activated. If you have an NPN sensor then it is likely that you can connect the output wire directly to your BoB. The BoB input will (probably) be weakly pulled up to 5V, and when the prox activates then it will be pulled down to 0V. If you have PNP sensors, or if the inputs on the BoB are opto-couplers, then it gets a little more complicated. So, what type of prox sensor do you have, and what is the nature of the BoB inputs (and, also, are the inputs two-terminal floating inputs, or commoned on the +5 or commoned on the 0V side? -- atp If you can't fix it, you don't own it. http://www.ifixit.com/Manifesto -- Introducing Performance Central, a new site from SourceForge and AppDynamics. [Emc-users] Slow axix movement
Hi Having built a 1.5 m x 1.5 m CNC gantry router used for woodwork, I am still amazed that it works as well as it does, however I am now thinking that the axis should be moving a little bit faster ( I recently costed a job that would have taken 15 hours to cut which seems a bit excessive). It is set to run at 15mm per second max velocity, above that speed the steppers start screaming and start missing. I know that the screws, bearings and drive nuts are not that well aligned and the screws whip about a bit. I plan to fix that soon, but I would like to know what sort of speed I should aim for. Is there any one out there with a similar set up who could tell me what max speed they are working to. Re: [Emc-users] ini.fiiles
I know I,m missing something very simple here but: If I set max speed to equal feed speed the motors freeze on rapid moves. With max speed about 15 they just about start turning. If I set max speed to 20mm/s the motors do rapids move but do not go to the right position. There is also a reluctance for all motors to move in positive direction at lower max speeds All this also seems to happen in Mach3 Unless anyone can figire this out I am going to rewire the drivers and power supply with shielded cable and fix them to an aluminium base. [Emc-users] Micro stepper driver MSD542 / KL-5042 cont
Hi agian If anyone can bear to listen to my woes I am still having problems configuring my stepper machine. As someone suggested, the problem seems to be with the rapid moves. I have got one good result with Velocity @ 20mm acceleration @ 10 with micro stepping set @ 16 with the motors wired in parallel, but I have not been able to repeat this success. Acceleration set above 20 and the motors sound terrible and miss stepps. Below 20 the rapid moves do not go to the right place. Can anyone explain why the machine moves correctly on cutting moves and rapid moves go wonky? Thanks Aaron -- Powered by Outblaze - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. I am almost certain the miss alignment is not due to the gantry skewing, mainly because it is in a different axis. If it helps the feet of the gantry are 450mm long with fancy carriages at each end. One stepper per axis Gantry runs on X axis rails and weighs about 90kg - 100kg Y axis weighs about 20 -30 kg And the spindle and mount 10-20kg All axis run directly from trapezoidal screws 16mm dia, 4mm pitch with brass nuts. [Emc-users] Micro stepper driver MSD542 / KL-5042 cont.
I think I would like to clear a few miss understandings here. I am not an engineer and will never be one. I am a furniture maker/designer with a keen interest in digital technologies and linux. I have built a 1.5m x 1.5m gantry style router table with high spec rails, carriages and bearings. It has been two years in the planning and taken 2-3 months to build in my spare time. I bought a CNC Kit from an online company in UK (who have not been able to sort my problem out) consisting of 3 x MSD542 micro controllers, 3 X FL86STH High torque Nema 34 Stepper motors and 2 X L6-PF11-001 (PS407) power supply units. The motors are connected in parallel with micro stepping set to 16 and the power at 4.2 amps. It has cost me well over £1000 and I would like to get it to work with a reasonable amount of accuracy. I have tried using many settings of speed and acceleration but I always get a the same result. When engraving a line text the individual letters look okay but they are always misplaced along the y axis by between 5mm and 30mm, and always in the same direction. My question today is could this be because I have not used shielded cable to wire the powersupply and drivers together. If this could be the problem what kind of cable should I use. Or is there something else I should look into If any one can offer some advise I would be very grateful Cheers Aaron -- Powered by Outblaze - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. I just tried reducing the acceleration velocity is now 5 and acceleration 1 It seemed to make the text miss-alignment slightly worse. Is this really such a hit and miss procedure? Re: [Emc-users] Micro stepper driver MSD542 / KL-5042
The timings in the chart seem a bit better but still not good enough. Yes I can jog and the motors sound reasonable, When I try to engrave a line of text the individual letters look good, but they get progressively, and randomly, miss-aligned on the y axis. Also the total length of the text seems a little small. When I try to engrave a series of 3 squares and a circle, the squares get rounded corners and the circle is miss-placed in the pattern. Does this help to diagnose the problem? Is it a question of tweaking the timings? When a motor looses steps does it do so in the same place every time you run a program? Hi I am still having trouble configuring a stepper machine with MSD542 aka KL-5042 micro stepper drivers. I am getting far better results when configured with MACH 3 and can only think that it is the way it configures the drivers. In the data sheet it reads.. 'For reliable response, pulse width should be longer than 2.5us. and For reliable motion response, DIR signal should be ahead of PUL signal by 5us at least' How can I set up EMC with these values? I very much want to use open source software as much as possible, so if any one is using these drivers I would very much like to hear from them. Hi I am having problems displaying drawing in gcnccam. I have dxf with layers named outline and hole and have set up similar layers in gcnccam, but no drawing is dispalyed. [Emc-users] Problem configuring stepper machine
Hi I am having problems configuring a home made stepper machine. I am using the stepper config wizard, but cannot find values for: Step time Step space Direction hold Direction setup I cannot find any reference to these parameters in the MSD542 Microstepping Driver data sheet. It does allow me to change values for microstep from 2 to 125, but I do not see this is relevant to stem space, or step time. (A micro step of 16 seems to work, from trial and error) I can run the 'EMC2 AXIS' program that displays when emc is first started, but some of the letters get miss aligned...is this because the machine is missing stepps, how can I solve this? Also,I am unable to test any axis in the stepper config wizard. Why would this be?
