Modify Reply-To Address

2002-04-16 Thread David Parker

Hello,

I want to be able to create an automatic reply-to address for every
email that goes through a particular distribution list. Essentially,
this will make it so that when you hit reply to an email sent through a
list, the default reply-to address is the address for the distribution
list.

Any ideas?

David

RE: performance monitoring

2002-04-16 Thread IRELAND,MIKE (HP-Corvallis,ex1)

Heather,

All of this data (and more) is stored in the tracking logs. With a few
lines of , you can parse the logs and
import them into a database for analysis. Once you get comfortable with the
logs and SQL, you can pull some very useful data from them. Details on the
tracking log format can be found in the knowledge base.

Subject: performance monitoring

I'm trying to determine how many messages/day are delivered to local
recipients from local recipients, as compared to how many messages are
delivered from internet recipients to local recipients and vice versa. I'm
taking my first dive into performance monitoring and I'm a little
overwhelmed with how many different "counters" there are, and each report
different numbers for what appears to me to be the same thing, with no
apparent pattern. I never imagined there'd be so much to choose from!

Can any of you give me some guidance on the counters I should add to
performance monitor to get some kind of meaningful data? Or even a good
reference for performance monitoring in exchange?

fyi, exchange 5.5 sp4, nt4 sp6a, single mail server site.

Thanks for your time,
Heather

RE: performance monitoring

2002-04-16 Thread Chris Scharff

To get that kind of information from Exchange requires analysis of the
message tracking logs and possibly the IMS archival logs depending on the
granualrity of data you desire.

Q173280 and Q173364 contain information on the tracking log format and event
ID meanings. For a single server organization, parsing them and using a tool
like Access (or perl) to report on them is relatively straightforward.

http://www.swinc.com/resource/scripts.htm has a couple of scripts which do
similar things for E2K, there might be something to be gained by looking at
them.

A small company (15 people) is asking me about installing Exchange. I've
been looking at Small Business Server and it looks almost too good to be
true. The obvious limitations (50 workstations, no trusts) are not a problem
for this company.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone had any experience with SBS 2000?
ISA server also looks interesting (the company originally wanted a PIX).
Does it live up to it's promises?

2002-04-16 Thread John Q Jr.

Great!
[1]Excuse me for "obfuscating" the domain, I thought it was best. I now
understand my faulty thinking.
That was the information I was really looking for. I did not realize the
error message using "sorry" was from another system.
So now I understand that message came from the OTHER server. I do not see
how I could have read into that.
I do understand why I got the responses I did, see above. [1]
If anyone could direct me to a place where error messages are described &
detailed I would love to know.

Thank you all again,
John Q

2002-04-16 Thread Daniel Chenault

First off, you obfuscated the domain name of the server. As has been said
here many, many times that makes it very difficult for the rest of us to
help troubleshoot.

Second: neither the IMS in 5.x or the SMTP service in Win2K use wording like
"sorry..." That's coming from the system you're sending to. Your server does
not send NDRs back to itself; the OTHER system is the one that sends the
NDRs.

Now, how about we start over?

Re: Re:mailbox size limits

2002-04-16 Thread John Q Jr.

I understand and I think the issue here is my poor communication skills.
mail01-ens.domain.com is MY mail server. The mail server where no limits are
set!
I appreciate the advice.
I think my question should have been, What does, "that message size exceeds
my databytes limit" mean in terms of where are the possible settings for
these limits OTHER than the two places I have mentioned. (below)
Are there any other places?
Yes the message is CLEAR, I just don't know if I have ALL the places it
could have been set.
This is what I got from the message,
#5.3.4 smtp - 5.X.X Permanent Failure
X.3.4 Message too big for system

552 - sorry, that message size exceeds my databytes limit.

So I looked at the limits and found no inconsistencies. Please let me know
where I went wrong, besides coming to this list!, ridicules included. :-)

Thank You,
- John Q

RE: Re:mailbox size limits

2002-04-16 Thread Ben Winzenz

John, what Daniel is saying is that if you look at the error message, it
CLEARLY says that the message is being rejected BY mail01-ens.domain.com as
indicated by the 552 sorry, that message size exceeds
My databytes limit. I think there are many times that admins don't trust
themselves. This may or may not have been the case here. Understanding
error messages is one of the basic functions of our jobs. It is frustrating
for many of us here when the same questions get asked over and over when all
it would take is 2 seconds to actually look at the message and say to
yourself, Oh, this is the domain I am sending to. Oh, they are saying that
the message size exceeds their limit. Plus, if you know that you have no
limits set on your servers, then it really is a no-brainer. Trust yourself
a little more. It will make things easier.

Apparanly, you CAN'T do the reading part. Your error message says...

my

So this mail01-ens.domain.com's SMTP server/connector/relay program,
etc. is complaining!!!

I've just discovered that my Exchange (5.5 sp4) was open to relaying (and
was being used by a spammer)
I have closed that 'hole', but now I'd like to report the spammer to
whom-ever tracks these sort of things.

I believe the spammer is Hotstocks.com (all the e-mails going out where
addressed from [EMAIL PROTECTED], where xxx seemed to be a random, valid,
domain).

Doing a quick search on Usenet shows that others have had similar
experiences with Hotstocks.com (i.e. relaying off their servers).

I've closed the relay, but what can I do regarding Hotstocks.com?

It's the best selling product for MS. You can't beat the price.
Much improved since SBS 4.5
If time it's not a factor, SBS .NET it's beta 2 now.

A small company (15 people) is asking me about installing Exchange. I've
been looking at Small Business Server and it looks almost too good to be
true. The obvious limitations (50 workstations, no trusts) are not a
problem
for this company.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone had any experience with SBS
2000?
ISA server also looks interesting (the company originally wanted a PIX).
Does it live up to it's promises?

I need to change permissions from "Default - Reviewer" to "Default - Author"
for 200 calendar folders. I am not aware of any way other than creating
individual profiles and manually logging into the mailboxes. Does anyone
know of another way or tool/script that can do this en-mass?

I see Soysal already answered. I'll take this opportunity to rant a little
bit.

The title of administrator carries with it an implicit ability to logically
think things through. The error message you are getting below is
_completely_ clear - mail01-ens.domain.com obviously has a message size
limit.

THINK, dammit. Stop expecting the world to earn your paycheck for you.

I believe the spammer is Hotstocks.com (all the e-mails going out where

Doing a quick search on Usenet shows that others have had similar

files from old pst to a new one in his new computer. It caused a major mail

couldn't send any messages.

Did he recently change his profile to have his mail delivered to a .pst? If
that's the case, then OL might be pulling email out of his exchange mailbox

Hello all,

I have a question for the Exchange experts. MS Exchange 5.5 NT 4 SP 6a.. I
recently went live with a Postfix mail gateway. So now email comes in
through our firewall (PIX) and directly to the Postfix mail gateway.
Postfix determines what mail to relay to the internal MS Ex box. This works
great. Before going live with the Postfix mail gateway I would sometimes
see mail in the IMS (outbound) Queue on Exchange with an originator of
'<>'.. The question is that now that there is a secure mail gateway in
place with relay restrictions, I still see these messages in the MS Ex IMS
outbound queue.

Could these messages leaving Ex be NDRs generated by Exchange..? It isn't
causing a problem, but still worries me that I don't know why they are
there.. Sorry if this is a stupid question...

   ~John

OWA "Unknown Error"

2002-04-16 Thread Steve Iadarola

Hello,

I recently set up an
E2K machine in a test environment.  It is a running on Win2K Adv. Server
with SP2 installed, IE 5.5 SP2 and the following hot fixes installed on the
OS:

  Q300845_W2K_SP3_X86_EN.exeQ313450_W2K_SP3_X86_EN.exeQ313829_W2K_SP3_X86_EN.exeQ314147_W2K_SP3_X86_EN.exeq316059.exeq319182.exerbupdate.exevbs55nen.exe

Once I
installed the hot fixes I installed E2k and then E2K SP2.  When I connect
to the OWA I am getting the following error:

I click OK and everything seems fine.  Every now
and then it will not appear until I click the "FOLDER" button on the left to see
the folder view.  Once you clear the error everything appears to work
OK.  The only thing that I can see that does not work is after I log out of
the OWA and click the "CLOSE" button to close the Browser
window.

A search of TechNet only came up with 10 results and I
think that I have narrowed it down to one of two
causes:
1) From  http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/office/maintain/featusability/helpofc.asp
Run-Time Error Occurs When Hiding or Showing CommandBar Object in VBA
Macro
You attempt to hide or show a CommandBar object in a Visual Basic for
Applications macro, and you see the following error message:
Run-time error '-2147467259 (80004005)'
Method 'Visible' of object 'CommandBar' failed
This problem occurs if you attempt to hide or show a command bar to which the
Visible property does not apply.
Not all CommandBar items support the Visible property. The following table
lists the CommandBar items known to generate the preceding error message when
they are used with the Visible property.
2) From http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q209050 (although
the info states that it is not related to my specific
problem.)
This article lists
the error message numbers and text that are returned from ADOFiltr.dll as a
result of calling either the DesktopToDevice or DeviceToDesktop
API function calls from Microsoft Visual Basic.

Has anyone else seen
this error or know of a work around?

TIA,
Steve

Besides the PST delivery, look for an OST sychronization problem.

OT: Small business server

2002-04-16 Thread Ken Cornetet

A small company (15 people) is asking me about installing Exchange. I've
been looking at Small Business Server and it looks almost too good to be
true. The obvious limitations (50 workstations, no trusts) are not a problem
for this company.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone had any experience with SBS 2000?
ISA server also looks interesting (the company originally wanted a PIX).
Does it live up to it's promises?

Relaying

2002-04-16 Thread Rasey, Dennis

Thanks,

RE: HELP-Old emails are reappearing

2002-04-16 Thread Chris Levis

Did he recently change his profile to have his mail delivered to a .pst? If
that's the case, then OL might be pulling email out of his exchange mailbox
and putting it into a new local file.

Re: Email review

2002-04-16 Thread Glenn Corbett

KVS Enterprise Vault is a great product, has lots of nice features around
terminating PST's and bringing them back into the fold, amongst other
things.

Does however keep the messages "live", i.e. on Disk storage, and can become
VERY large if you want to keep lots of mail for a long time.

Has a nice web interface, so you don't need outlook to search and read
archived messages (don't even need the Exchange server up for archived
messages). Also renders some content types (where a filter exists), so you
can maintain some semblance of forward compatibility. For example if you
upgrade to a version of Word that cant read old files, Enterprise vault
stores a rendered version of the attachment that is viewable entirely within
the browser (no ActiveX support required). This is a great feature if you
want to retain stuff for a long time.

Security on individual Vaults can be modified via the Admin interface, so
your auditors can conduct audits of the email system without having each
individual user go through their own email.

Lots more other things.

Haven't had direct experience with the other products.

RE: Pulling a email out of the DB?

2002-04-16 Thread Martin Blackstone

Q166315
While it was written for OL 97, it applies to all versions.

As you can see, a very specific set of activities must be happening for a
recall to work.
You must be in OL.
You must be logged on when the recall is sent.
You must not have read the message.
You must not have moved it to another folder.

I went with the recall, mostly cause I didn't have any exmerge
experience(I'll play with that in a dev environment). Oddly enough the
recall got the job done in a less then desirable fashion. It emailed
everyone in the company that so and so want to recall the message and it
didn't actually recall the message till each person opened the recall
notice. It was kind of confusing to the users. I wish it actually had just
deleted the emails and kept quiet.

I'll use exmerge next time.

David,

that wont help for the remote users, since IIRC the mail recall feature is
client side (ie Outlook). They would still have to dl the original 16mb
message AND the recall msg.

Re: RBDL/Auto DL population based upon directory properties (in E2K)

2002-04-16 Thread Glenn Corbett

Whats the problem with using RBDL ??

if you are relatively proficient with VB/VBScript, you can enhance RBDL to
work with AD (it is using ADSI / LDAP in its core code)

RE: Sharing a custom folder under mailbox

2002-04-16 Thread Nikki Peterson - ITCX

Another option: If its not OL2002...you could try "Shared Folders"

Place the folder in a PST (can't be in the Exchange)
Highlight folder
Select File\Share\This Folder
Drop any info you want to share with someone else into it and set it to
update every hour, day, whatever...

I use this to share info from home OLK (ISP) and Work.

Set reviewer rights at the root (outlook today - mailbox name) to the
"default" and then have the other person "add" the mailbox to theirs by
going to TOOLS|SERVICES|EXCHANGE SERVER|PROPERTIES|ADVANCED tab| ADD then
put in your mailbox name.

The recall message crap is not guaranteed to work. The only way he can be

Log into the users mailbox, go to their sent items folder, open the message,
ACTIONS|RECALL MESSAGE. It will recall all messages but then again they
should have never sent out a message that large and the MTA's should have
had a limit set on them (such as 4/8/12mb).

Hi

In a bit of frustration here, I had a new employee form our HR department
decide to send out a 16 meg word document to everyone in the company. This
wouldn't normally effect most of the users but it will effect our 40 or so
remote users who use modems and possibly some other users who have more
stuff in their mailboxes.

Is there a way I can pull this email from the system in its entirety without
downing the server or restarting any major services?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: E2K install

2002-04-16 Thread Devin

Can anyone refresh my memory on one of the posts about Exchange Server
5.0 not allowing another Exchange Server in the domain? We have an NT
server running Ex5.0 and we are trying to install E2k on a Win2k Domain
controller.

I remember seeing this topic and need help getting back to it. Any help
would be great.

RE: Split DNS

2002-04-16 Thread Mihnea Mironescu

What I think you did, is you installed the second server as a Stand-Alone
server, and you intend to keep the external DNS server for your domain on
it. Of course, you don't want this DNS service to talk to the internal DNS
service, since you don't want your private IPs gone public.

There is a problem in that both servers serve the same domain.com scope.
Anyone?

RE: Split DNS

2002-04-16 Thread Jeremy I. Shannon

If you made the new box a DC you could be having issues that the DNS is now setup as a
root server. If you go into dns and see a . zone, delete it and that will let it
search the real root servers for internet IP's.

RE: RBDL/Auto DL population based upon directory properties (in E 2K)

2002-04-16 Thread Chris Scharff

Nothing in Exchange currently to do this natively. There is a DL management
tool in the E2K resource kit, but it's not particularly RBDL like. I believe
at the moment 3rd party tools are your only option. In the Web Links |
Server | Directory Management section of www.mail-resources.com I believe
there are at least 2 DL tools which work with E2K.

View the advanced mode in the DNS mmc and remove the "." domain from the

It would be MUCH better to point this server at the other DNS server as

Outlook XP Clients Receive "Unable to display folder" When attempting to view Replica of Exchange 5.5 Public Folder From Another Site

2002-04-16 Thread Bob

Dear Esteemed E-mail Administrators,

Users who have permissions to a public folder have been receiving the
"Unable to display folder" message when attempting to access a replica
from another site. The Outlook XP address field will display:

outlook:EF00198262C0AA6611CD9BC800AA002FC45A020001001705E3FA

Not the correct address, which is:

outlook:\\Public Folders\All Public Folders\Saint Louis Public
Folders\Resource Optimization Group\Vacation Schedules\Vacation Schedule -
Clinical Engineering

If they cut and paste the correct address into the Outlook address field
the folder will display.

The permissions are correct and this works fine with Outlook 2000 (and
fine for me withh ADMIN rights and using Outlook XP)

The only thing I could find on TECHNET referenced replicating the TOP
level folder with the child folder (which I have done)

Any idea's or should I get out the credit card and call M$?

Sincerely,
Bob Bufford

OWA 2000 issues

2002-04-16 Thread Romeo, Matthew

I know that this may have been covered before but I was wondering if there are any hot
fixes to some of the calendaring issues that exist in OWA 2000. For example, reminder
pop-ups are unable to be closed, acceptance of meetings are not entered into the
calendar ...etc. I saw a few Q article that just said "microsoft is aware of the
problem" but never saw any follow ups with fixes. Final question, is Exchange 2000 SP3
due out any time soon? Thanks.

Hi,

E-Mail Extender: Expensive, buggy and crummy support. All blamed on the CD
writer, however. Seriously, it doesn't go one month without shutting down

does and I didn't work here during the implementation. YMMV of course.

I group these 2 products together because many of the vendors do the same.

We have narrowed it down to these 3 companies. Each have their positives

RE: Changing IP of Exchange Server Breaks MTA

2002-04-16 Thread Terry Lee

H. I had something similar but it had nothing to do with the IP address. It had
to do with the Recipient Policies. We had 2 servers, say a.company.com &
b.company.com. The Default Recipient Policy had an SMTP address of a.company.com from
when we only had 1 server. We had to remove that and just leave @company.com as
possible email addresses.it was causing a looping problem. I don't think that's
your problem but here's my 2 cents.

With this I am forced to call MS PSS due to time contraints.

Log into the users mailbox, go to their sent items folder, open the message,

RE: Sharing a custom folder under mailbox

but beware, if you create further folders under your mailbox, they'll
inherit reviewer permissions - which is likely not what you want.

1)Give them reviewer permissions on Outlook Today.
2)Give them reviewer permissions on the custom folder.
3)Have them add your mailbox as an additional mailbox as explained in the
previous message.

Your mailbox should then appear in their Folder List, however, the only
folders that will be listed are the folders for which they have at least
reviewer rights.

What exactly would the reinstall do to the existing install? Would it just
reinstall the metabase? This sucks. I don't use any Anti virus in the

Hi there,

Current environment:-
A Single Domain NT4 network
Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 runs on NT4 Member server with SP6a
Exchange Client = MS Outlook 97 and above
Number of Exchange users = 3000

Question:-
At the moment, the default setup of users' Outlook Address Book is
looking at Global Address List. Is there any scripting / profile utility
that I can use to change users Outlook profile to point to new place,
not Global Address List? As I have many Outlook users, I am hoping to
find a smarter tool that can assist me.

Thanks for your hint in advanced.

MSX5.5 and dir.edb

2002-04-16 Thread Bravo, Liliana

Greetings

MSX5.5/SP4
1 Exchange Organization
1 Exchnage site
3 severs

One of our three servers crashed and we replaced that one
with an old hard
disk (2 years ago), now we noticed that the other two have
current data and
also old data (i am talking about GAL), the old disk we
inserted has about
3000 more objects that the other two.

What can we do to keep same information in all three GALS?
Is there anyway
to set a master DIR.edb and let the other two get updates
from that one?

Thanks,
