Used KVS Enterprise Vault for just such a solution, works a treat. The
client side integration and features are way ahead of other productss.

Does anyone have any experience with archiving solutions like veritas
storage migrator for exchange?

We currently do not impose hard limits on our users due to a lot of
regulations that we need to comply with. We have users who have
mailboxes close to 3GB. On one exchange server that has 180 users, the
total size of the store is already at a 110GB.

I'm interested to know what solutions you have in place to keep down the
size of user's mailboxes.

Thanks,
Carmila

additional display name? - same question, proper thread topic

2003-06-06 Thread Morrison, Gordon
Sorry for the repost.
It's Friday afternoon and I forgot about the thread topic field being a header field.
For those of you who sort by thread topic.

Does anyone know of a way to have both a maiden name and married name appear as
distinct display names in the OAB, yet have them both point to the same account?

Thanks,
Gordon

Probably uninstall what you currently have and install the eval. You'll
need to recreate your settings but the good news is you don't have to
uninstall the eval once you have your serial numbers.

Tried that. It told me that my server "does not support trial version
upgrades". When I told that to the licensing rep at Trend, she did say
she would deliver the paperwork in person and be sure it gets done ASAP.
I just don't know if ASAP means today or 47.5 hours instead of 48.

I have an update on this issue for those of you still following it, and
another question.

First, I am still in the process of getting the latest version of
ScanMail (6.1) from Trend. Apparently 5.1 is no longer supported and
they won't talk to me until I get up to date. Also, the problem has been
accelerating; we are now seeing the services crash daily and sometimes
multiple times daily.

The question is, do any of you out there who have heard of this issue
also have a MetaFrame server in your organization and have you seen it
acting strangely as well? We have seen, on several occasions, the
MetaFrame server's WWW Publishing Service stop unexpectedly at around
the same time as the Exchange services go down.

As always, I welcome any input or suggestions.

Thanks...Ray

hit by a virus but I did a scan and both servers were clean.

Subject: Exchange 2000 Services crashing and server rebooting...

I have a question to run by the list that I have been unsuccessful in
finding any definitive answers to anywhere else. About a month ago, we
started having problems with our Exchange 2000 server. It is Ex2K SP3
running on Win2K SP3. At intervals between a couple days and a week, we
notice that a number of System Services shut down unexpectedly. Upon
looking at the event logs we see the following sequence of events.

Event Id: 7031 The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Network News Transport (NNTP) service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange POP3 terminated unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service terminated

unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service
terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The World Wide Web Publishing service terminated
unexpectedly...

On 2 occasions, this sequence was followed by the server rebooting on
its own and generating an event ID 6008 "the previous shutdown...was
unexpected."

I searched the MSKB and the only thing I could find that seemed to
relate was a reference to lingering issues from the CodeRed virus. I
used Trend Micro's system cleanup application and confirmed that there
were no indications of infection on the server.

I am hoping there are others out there that may have seen something like
this that can offer some suggestions short of reinstalling the entire
system. Please help.

Thanks in advance...

RE: Friday Haiku

2003-06-06 Thread Stephen Mynhier
Actually, there are 2 shirts

The one that Chris is talking about is from the MessageOne party at
SpeedZone on Sunday night. It has the TechEd 2003 logo with a nice red
X over TechEd and a handwritten MEC above it. Very nice.

The one I was referring to was from the Aelita booth. It just has
"Exchange Guru" written on it in nice big letters. Also very nice, but
unfortunately, handed out willy-nilly, and therefore, not as cool. I
think that some of the people that I saw wearing them could barely spell
"IT"

1. exactly 6 people offered to buy the shirt off of me.
2. exactly 9 different people at the party last night had pictures taken
with my shirt. And I mean "my shirt." I had to turn around so they could
be photographed standing next to the back of it. 3. At the expo
yesterday someone from MS approached me and asked me why I found it
necessary to cross out Tech Ed on my shirt. He seemed to think I made
this shirt up just for myself and not that it was a "group" shirt and
was quite dismayed. As if this was my personal political statement. I
told him it was given to me at a party for a group of Exchange admins;
not a personal vendetta, etc. Of course, I said, as long as you are here
I am disappointed you canceled MEC and don't disagree with the back of
the shirt. And went on with my grievances . . . :)

In the end he thanked me! :)

Sometimes users get sent legitimate executables, they get blocked because of
the extention, so I have to copy it to a share for them to retrieve it - I'm
then reliant on the AV on my desktop, what I'd prefer is for the virus
checker to say "is it infected" before it looks at whether it should
quarantine that sort of file.

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, but that's just how I'd like it to
work - in fairness with 3.81 they're most of the way there with the
integrated quarantine manager section.

RE: Exchange 2000 Services crashing and server rebooting...

2003-06-06 Thread Ray Beckwith
I have an update on this issue for those of you still following it, and another
question.

First, I am still in the process of getting the latest version of ScanMail (6.1) from
Trend. Apparently 5.1 is no longer supported and they won't talk to me until I get up
to date. Also, the problem has been accelerating; we are now seeing the services crash
daily and sometimes multiple times daily.

The question is, do any of you out there who have heard of this issue also have a
MetaFrame server in your organization and have you seen it acting strangely as well?
We have seen, on several occasions, the MetaFrame server's WWW Publishing Service stop
unexpectedly at around the same time as the Exchange services go down.

As always, I welcome any input or suggestions.

Thanks...Ray

Subject: Exchange 2000 Services crashing and server rebooting...

I have a question to run by the list that I have been unsuccessful in finding any
definitive answers to anywhere else. About a month ago, we started having problems
with our Exchange 2000 server. It is Ex2K SP3 running on Win2K SP3. At intervals
between a couple days and a week, we notice that a number of System Services shut down
unexpectedly. Upon looking at the event logs we see the following sequence of events.

Event Id: 7031 The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Network News Transport (NNTP) service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange POP3 terminated unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The World Wide Web Publishing service terminated unexpectedly...

On 2 occasions, this sequence was followed by the server rebooting on its own and
generating an event ID 6008 "the previous shutdown...was unexpected."

I searched the MSKB and the only thing I could find that seemed to relate was a
reference to lingering issues from the CodeRed virus. I used Trend Micro's system
cleanup application and confirmed that there were no indications of infection on the
server.

I am hoping there are others out there that may have seen something like this that can
offer some suggestions short of reinstalling the entire system. Please help.

Thanks in advance...

Re: ScanMail missing tricks?

2003-06-06 Thread Paul Hutchings
Sometimes users get sent legitimate executables, they get blocked because of
the extention, so I have to copy it to a share for them to retrieve it - I'm
then reliant on the AV on my desktop, what I'd prefer is for the virus
checker to say "is it infected" before it looks at whether it should
quarantine that sort of file.

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, but that's just how I'd like it to
work - in fairness with 3.81 they're most of the way there with the
integrated quarantine manager section.

Re: ScanMail missing tricks?

2003-06-06 Thread Ray Beckwith
We had this issue a while back when we first started using ScanMail. We
found out from Trend that when ScanMail runs in MAPI mode, it doesn't scan
the attachments until AFTER the message is in the inbox; which leaves the
possibility if the server is extremely busy scanning, the user could see
and even open the message before the scanner gets to it.

The solution was to run ScanMail in AVAPI mode instead. This mode
intercepts attachments before they reach the IS. Just be sure you have
upgraded to the latest version of ScanMail and the latest Exchange SP
first as there have been issues with AVAPI mode in earlier versions
crashing the IS. Check the list archives for this topic. I know it was
discussed here a couple years ago.

Good Luck.
Ray

RE: ScanMail missing tricks?

I'd check your Scan Engine and make sure you have the latest scan engine
& pattern file. I'd also enable AVAPI if you're not yet.

I don't know what the deal is with this latest version of BugBear, but
it's really a problem.

I started having issues with it on the 4th.

The remote access and key logger are the scary parts of this worm.

I have had it get past two A/V scanners. One on mail and one on
workstations. I have double extensions blocked and all the usual
extensions too.

I recommend everyone be on alert for this one:

No problems here with 3.81 - one thing I wish it did do was to scan
attachments blocked by extention blocking - we've had loads of bugbears

All RUS's should point to the same DC/GC. Let AD replication carry the

I have 2 W2K DCs and they're both are GC server. Right now there are two
RUS, one is the enterprise point to DC1 and one is the organization also
point to DC1. Technically, I can create another RUS and point it to DC2
so the GAL gets update as well , but I read somewhere that all I have to
do is change the Enterprise RUS to DC1 and the Org RUS to DC2. Is that
true?

RUS

2003-06-06 Thread Pham, Tuan
I have 2 W2K DCs and they're both are GC server. Right now there are two RUS, one is
the enterprise point to DC1 and one is the organization also point to DC1.
Technically, I can create another RUS and point it to DC2 so the GAL gets update as
well , but I read somewhere that all I have to do is change the Enterprise RUS to DC1
and the Org RUS to DC2. Is that true?

Thanks!

What have I learned here?
I need a wireless toy
No, not one like that

I want to check mail
While sitting in a session
I want better toys

Not enough girls for them all
They need cold showers

Walking around here
All these "Exchange Guru" shirts
Most cannot spell it

Some sessions were good
Other sessions were long naps
I still hate clusters.

Subject: Outlook web access

Have recently set up outlook web access and set the config for a user and
the http details, but having trouble loging in via a browser, not sure if
I have missed a step. Does the users actual PC have to be set up to log on
correctly?. What is the format for the url for the user?. Bit confused
with it, we have just set up our own mail server with exchange 5.5. and
have a user wanting to get their emails externally.

You could present the various exact scenarios you hoped clustering exchange would help
with and let the group kick around a discussion over if it would actually help and by
how much.

Just left an HP session at TechEd. Although there were obviously
vendor-specified disclaimers, the speaker's verdict was pretty simple --
Clustering just isn't meant for Exchange.

I will spare the gory 'political' details as we are in the midst of trying
to consolidate 35 '5.5' Exchange servers in 35 domains to as little servers
as possible. We're looking at an Exchange 2K3 rollout and probably a hybrid
AD using MS's meta directory (maybe). The real question is I am looking for
real world experience with something similar to what we are going to from a
Exchange 2K shop. Essentially we'll be looking at 5,000 users (.5 GB per
mailbox) to start with another 5,000 in phase 2 and 5,000 more in phase 3.
With a new 2K3 AD, we'll probably consider at least 2 DC's and one dedicated
server for OWA. The main mail servers and storage is really the number
cruncher. It's looking like a 3 server cluster and external storage (AV also
has to be factored). All client stations will be on at least 10 if not 100
switched lines, GB speed on the WAN backbone. I have gone to Dell and other
places to run the traditional load 'configuration wizard' and I have always
preferred to error on the side of you can never have too much power. I
would like to hear from people using SAN's or the like to account for TB
size storage and backup. How close was the configuration load wizards to
what you really required. Thanks

2003-06-06 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

I don't know what the deal is with this latest version of BugBear, but
it's really a problem.

I started having issues with it on the 4th.

The remote access and key logger are the scary parts of this worm.

I have had it get past two A/V scanners. One on mail and one on
workstations. I have double extensions blocked and all the usual
extensions too.

I recommend everyone be on alert for this one:

A company called Authentica makes a product called MailRecall that does
pretty much that. It does indeed work, but it requires a bit of overhead
and
an additional client for both sender and recipient.

RE: Real world experience

2003-06-06 Thread Stephen Mynhier
Just left an HP session at TechEd. Although there were obviously
vendor-specified disclaimers, the speaker's verdict was pretty simple --
Clustering just isn't meant for Exchange.

Like asking a car manufacturer to fix that whole
smashing-when-you-drive-your-car-into-a-brick-wall sorta thing. It's
not broke. It's just not smart.

I will spare the gory 'political' details as we are in the midst of
trying
to consolidate 35 '5.5' Exchange servers in 35 domains to as little
servers
as possible. We're looking at an Exchange 2K3 rollout and probably a
hybrid
AD using MS's meta directory (maybe). The real question is I am looking
for
real world experience with something similar to what we are going to
from a
Exchange 2K shop. Essentially we'll be looking at 5,000 users (.5 GB per
mailbox) to start with another 5,000 in phase 2 and 5,000 more in phase
3.
With a new 2K3 AD, we'll probably consider at least 2 DC's and one
dedicated
server for OWA. The main mail servers and storage is really the number
cruncher. It's looking like a 3 server cluster and external storage (AV
also
has to be factored). All client stations will be on at least 10 if not
100
switched lines, GB speed on the WAN backbone. I have gone to Dell and
other
places to run the traditional load 'configuration wizard' and I have
always
preferred to error on the side of you can never have too much power. I
would like to hear from people using SAN's or the like to account for TB
size storage and backup. How close was the configuration load wizards to
what you really required. Thanks

Subject: ScanMail missing tricks?

A user got an infected attachment right to her Inbox, which doesn't ever
happen here since we started using ScanMail. I have ScanMail 3.52 (Exch 5.5
SP4) blocking all the attachments on the List of Danger, and yet this
BUGBEAR.B file - QABACKUP.EXE.SCR - got through to the Inbox. A Manual scan
showed up six other virus-infected attachments which had apparently got
through. But the manual scan does not pick up the file I just mentioned,
which is now in my Deleted Items. A copy is on my hard drive and Sophos
AntiVirus also doesn't detect it.

Is it possible that ScanMail misses out on some messages if several arrive
at once, or is there another more likely solution? I have sent the file to
Trend and Sophos to see what they say, but the attachment blocking was, I
thought, non-negotiable and always works. Luckily I badger my users about
the danger of attachments on a fairly regular basis.

Mailbox Group

2003-06-06 Thread Crumbaker, Ron
I'm needing to setup a support type mailbox that when email is sent to
it, it will be delivered to a group of users here. I know I can setup a
Group and have the address sent to those members.

They would also like an auto-response sent to the sender stating that we
have received their request and someone will get back to them within 48
hours.

Is this possible?

I am trying to find MMS 2003, specifically the GAL sync tool. I understand
MS has a standard version and an enterprise version. I am looking for the
standard version. Have not been able to find information on where to
acquire the tools.

We are in the process of setting up a test environment with 2 forests, each
with their own Exchange organization. We will need to replicate address
lists between the organizations. Hoping the GAL sync tool will allow this
replication.

Any help is appreciated.

RE: Real world experience

2003-06-06 Thread Robert Moir
I don't think its a case of "Fixing" anything as much as Exchange server being a
scenario where clustering generally offers a very poor return on the investment in
time and money you spend setting one up and tweaking it. Quite a lot of errors I've
seen with exchange relate to people doing stupid things and also to databases becoming
corrupted. Neither problem is especially solvable with clustering.

This is true of clustering no matter what platform you are clustering on and what
process you are trying to support with your cluster. Some things take to it like a
duck to beer, other applications are downright hostile to clustering environments, and
still more others don't give you much benefit from clustering one way or another
because they require a lot of tuning to run on a cluster and that app's major weakness
isn't something that is solved by a cluster.

Regards
Rob Moir

PGP and many other products will at least sign the email so that the

checking signatures requires a PGP client and is much too complicated

Recipient unavailable

2003-06-06 Thread Dflorea
This is more of a curiousity - I attempted to send mail to several
addresses at unc.edu this morning, and I simply could not get mail there
from my mail server (Exch2K, W2K). This is the error message:

*

 Subject: Test
  Sent: 6/5/2003 9:27 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' on 6/5/2003 9:27 AM
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For
assistance, contact your system administrator.

*

I verified their e-mail addys were good, and even sent mail successfully
from a hotmail account. I verified I'm not blocking that IP range, and
that they're not blocking my domain.

I do see our ISP's base range (208.187.x.x) is listed on a couple of
rather obscure RBL lists, but my mail server is not specifically listed
anywhere. Further, I can telnet to their mail server at 152.2.1.243
successfully.

What could be the issue?

Wow...that's one messed up mail server.

It's not responding onscreen to any input, while letting you type in

RE: Cannot send mail....stuck in Que

2003-06-06 Thread Dandy, Jim
That's odd. I'm having the same problem with my local school district.
Last Friday I moved my Exchange Server outside my firewall and then mail
went through to the school district. I moved it back inside and mail
continued to go through. On Monday when I came in I was getting "host
unreachable" again. I moved the server back outside the firewall and it
went through. I moved it back inside the firewall and it has been working
since. I don't know what's going on. I don't see anything in my firewall
logs that indicate a blocked communication. My server seems to be able to
communicate with everyone else just fine. I too am looking for an answer to
this strange behavior. I also have Exchange 5.5 SP4 but am running on NT 4.
The server I'm having trouble with is djusd.k12.ca.us (although it seems to
be working right now).

Wow...that's one messed up mail server.

It's not responding onscreen to any input, while letting you type in

I also couldn't disconnect from it.

Thanks

Thanks

RE: Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2003

yes - the new version (3.0) will be a 'product' available in two flavours: std allows
connectivity between 2 AD infrastructures; adv allows connectivity between different
directory/database environments.
MCS are no longer required to provide this

I got this info from a TechNet briefing, so can't confirm/deny the accuracy, although
have no reason to doubt it.

MS has a standard version and an enterprise version. I am looking for

We are in the process of setting up a test environment with 2 forests,

It's not responding onscreen to any input, while letting you type in

I also couldn't disconnect from it.

RE: Mailbox Rule - Send on Behalf

2003-06-06 Thread Ray Beckwith
For the rule, replace the "From [user]" criteria with "contains [text] in the message
header and then put the name in the [text] position. This should catch even the "sent
on behalf of" messages.

Subject: Mailbox Rule - Send on Behalf

Hi,

I receive multiple emails that are 'sent on behalf' of Data Center. The
rule I have created never works. I specifically must state who the
email is being sent from, in this case Brian Hale, for the rule to work.

This is the from the email:

From: Brian Hale On Behalf Of Data Center

My question is:
Can you create a rule that works even when the email is 'sent on behalf
of'? Is there a better way to do this? Perhaps this is a design
problem? Has anyone else run into this issue and if so how did you work
around it?

Depends on what error you see in the queue. The normal one here is
'network error during host resolution' or something like that. Try
doing an nslookup, and manually connecting via port 25 to the
destination server.

Thanks for the reply. I did think of that and used the Windows Component
app to undo the IE Enhanced Security Configuration stuff, but it did not
resolve these problems. It would not surprise me to learn that there was

Subject: Two Unusual Outlook 2002 Problems

Recently I reconfigured my production workstation from scratch to
include:

- Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition; and
- Office XP with sp2

This replaces a Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Office 2000 SR-1.

Now I am getting two weird problems (so far) with Outlook 2002.

1. My ability to modify Outlook folder permissions now consists of
modifying the Default permissions, and adding users to the list of those
who have permissions. I cannot modify any permissions (except Default)
and I cannot delete users from the list of those who have permissions.
This is true of my individual mailbox folders, and also Public Folders.
Essentially, almost everything is grayed out.

2. Every time I go to modify the current view of a folder (like add a
field) using the View - Current View - Customize Current View etc.
routine I get a "Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message, after which
Outlook restarts. I can modify things by using the Field Chooser tool,
or by dragging fields off the board.

This is a pretty vanilla install; it has only been in production for two
days. If I go back to an Outlook 2000 install I have on another Windows
2000 box everything works normally.

Any ideas? Thanks . . .

Jon Martin

RE: Cannot send mail....stuck in Que

2003-06-06 Thread Neil Hobson

Depends on what error you see in the queue. The normal one here is
'network error during host resolution' or something like that. Try
doing an nslookup, and manually connecting via port 25 to the
destination server.

I wonder if there is a way to force OL2K to use DSAccess at all time. That might
solve the problem.

My experience seems to indicate that this is indeed true for OL2002 - I
assume OL2K is the same.

BTW, OL98 seems to not be able to switch GCs even after being restarted.

We recently un-GC'd a DC because we were having problems with it. All of
the OL2K clients that were using it had to be restarted. We eventually
had to re-GC it because our few remaining OL98 clients wouldn't work.

Is it true that OL2K can't redirect to the new GC once the current one
assigned by DSAccess is unavailable? I heard that you have to restart

dis-advantage to the clients, because what if I took down the one of the

Reply to bringing up wrong domain name.

2003-06-06 Thread Woodruff, Michael
We have one of our companies complaining that one of their clients are
having trouble replying to their email. The client is saying when they
hit reply to an email they received from us, it changes the domain name
of their email address to one that is not one of their SMTP addresses.
Lets say their email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] When the client replies
it automatically brings up [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now, works.com would be our
main domain name, but our users who are sending does not have this
domain as an SMTP address. The client says they don't have any contacts
to pull this address from? We are running E2k SP3. Any ideas other
than the contacts? Thanks.

RE: TechEd

2003-06-06 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
You're having a name resolution issue.

I used to have RPCbindback errors in my server logs all the time, only
rarely between the servers in my own site, but all the time between my
bridgehead and the bridgehead in the other site in our org.

I could do a ping via FQDN and an RPC ping, but I couldn't ping the server's
common name. Our bridgehead and their bridgehead reside in different
domains...ours is bhi-erc.com, theirs is hanford.gov. So...my fix was to go
into the TCP/IP properties of the network connection, go to the Advanced
settings, then DNS tab, and in the "Append these DNS suffixes box, I had to
reverse the order I had the domains...I had to put their domain first...do
the same on yours. Put the other domain's FQDN in there. Do the opposite
on the other end and reboot both servers...SHOULD do the trick.

Hope that helps.

They can ping each other (was that by FQDN?) and have RPC communication

A company called Authentica makes a product called MailRecall that does
pretty much that. It does indeed work, but it requires a bit of overhead and
an additional client for both sender and recipient.

That's either name resolution or network related. And just because they can
ping doesn't mean there's enough free network bandwidth to support the
connection, either.

You didn't mention if they are local or not, and how they are connected, but
I'd suggest restarting the MTA service on both servers and see what the
result it.

RE: Sending emails that can not be altered

2003-06-06 Thread Neil Hobson

Indeed. However, Lotus Notes has a fabulous solution to this problem,
as Notes can prevent messages from being forwarded on, etc. To invoke
this solution, you simply click the 'Enable Bull$hit Security'[1] tick
box.

Not at all. If worse comes to pass a malicious person could copy the
email out longhand from one window to another, format it to make it look
forwarded (yes the headers wouldn't be quite right but who amoung your
user community looks at those?) and send it on. Sure it wouldn't be the
original email but the damage would be done because I presume what you
really want to protect is the content of these emails, not the random
collection of bits and bytes that were scraped together to take the
content out of the author's mind and put it on screen.

Ok,
First of all, there is a damn good step by step FAQ for OWA on Exchange
5.5 in the FAQ for this mailing list. Were you following that? Have you
checked it to see if it highlights a step you've missed?

Have you allowed the target users the log in locally right on the box
running OWA?

If you need more help, you might consider specifying what "trouble
logging in via a browser" actually means - a description of what happens
exactly when you try, what error messages you get (full message text
please!) and what, if anything, you found when checking the event logs
on the OWA machine for the times you attempted login can work wonders
for our ability to help!
