Front-end/Back-end ???

2001-08-30 Thread Mark

I have installed two Exchange 2000 Enterprise servers, one of them has
been configurated as Front-End (FE) Server. After rebooting the FE Server,
I use OWA and Internet Explorer i.e.: http://front-end/exchange/user1,
then a window appears asking account and password. However, no matter what
account/password I type, i cannot pass the authentication.

I also open Internet Services Manager of the FE Server, and discover
that inside the Default Web Site -public, Exchange, Exadmin appear as RED
icons (error icons). They are pointed to M:\exchange_server\MBX,
M:\exchange_server\public folders, etc. However, all of these are on the
BE server and it is not finding them. I have followed the Microsoft
whitepaper for FE/BE configuration to the letter.

What is it that I am missing? Please help .

2001-08-30 Thread Tom . H . Burke

If this is Ex2K then you must be working in Win2k and AD. This means that users
should be trying to authenticate with their normal logon name password. If
the error message you're getting is about authentication, then the issue of
where the directories actually are hasn't arisen yet - you need to authenticate
first! What messages are you getting in the IIS log when a user tries to
connect? What's the Directory Security settings in the Internet Service Manager?

Email on the corporate network is property of the corporation - there are
several intellectual property cases both in/ out of the courts that back
that statement. It is part of the administrators function to monitor
services and content belonging to the company as directed by owners. As part
of most company's employee handbook or corporate policy it simply states -
all information transmitted through the corporation's network belongs to the
corporation. It is not a privacy issue, it is a policy issue.

I monitor several small companies and periodically will audit outbound email
for a specific period to determine the legitimacy of use. Often times during
these audits, I locate users who spend countless hours of the company's
resources having conversations with friends and relatives as well as passing
joke email (can you say ILOVEYOU?). I have even caught one user sending
confidential information to a competitor and another user sending MP3's to
himself (600+ Mb over period of a week). Since it is my job to track these
items, I regularly perform these audits as part of my consulting services.

The problem with a snapshot in time monitor is that it is only a moment in
time. Having an automated process that dumps in/out email and then allows a
cursory review is an excellent option for companies that deal with
confidential information.

Personally, I have not adopted either the journaling option or setting up
something else (William - BCC was the suggestion was it not). It is however,
completely within a company's rights to review information coming in/ going
out of it's network as a matter of policy.

My experience, my $.02.

Saving e-mails (follow-up)

2001-08-30 Thread Bob Christian

I saw the original answer from the RMicciche. That works (adding boxes
to your outlook and exporting)...however, you may want to try EXMerge if
you are looking at pulling all of the messages for review for a group of
mailboxes. EXMerge is a tool from Microsoft. Last I remember, it came
as part of the Exchange install...but I think I had a newer version in
the BORK.

Of course, you could purchase Microdata's CAMEO and do some mail
scanning, sending questionable messages to a mailbox for review.

Bob

Exchange: 9215 error

2001-08-30 Thread Chris Bodnar

Exchange 5.5 SP2
NT 4.0 SP6a

We have an X.400 connector setup over dial-up with one of our vendors and
they are telling us that over the last 2 weeks they have been experiencing
a
problem where the connection seems to be terminating abnormally and the
messages are transferred to our system, but backing up on their system,
because they are not receiving a confirmation that the messages have been
transferred. I have found a number of articles that seem very similar. The
one that most closely describes our situation is Q193380. But the only
Event
ID associated with this on our Exchange server is 9215. The relevant KB
articles referencing 9215 are:

Q170056
Q154301
Q164400
Q182619
Q261251

But none seem to really pertain to this situation. I am considering going
to
SP4, but I found mention of a similar error that only manifests itself
with
SP3 or 4. So I am a little leery of doing this on a production server.

Has anyone come across this before?

The server was unable to logon the Windows NT account 'user_name' due to
the following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
The data is the error code are found in the system log. Correct

Directory Security settings in ISM are set to Basic and Windows Integrated
authentication methods and no IP address restrictions.

There is no firewall between the two servers. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help. Answers are in-line.

Have you tried a few alternatives:-
 a) is it just one user account, or many?
it is all users - domain admin, exchange service account, regular users,
etc.

 b) what happens if you untick 'basic' authentication?
It redirects to my back-end server and says error 404 file not found. The
redirect URL is http://ohca/MBX/USA/user_name; which has me confused
since there is no such path.

 c) presumably the access attempt is being made from a PC on the network? If so
what OS - win95/98/ME/NT/2K? Is the user logged-on to the network from the PC?
User logged on to the network from win2k pro and server machines.

 d) what does the IIS log show for the connection attempt?
Not sure what you mean by this. The event logs still say unknown username
or password.

 e) what URL are you entering in the browser?
Have tried all of the following: //computer_name/exchange,
www.domain_name/exchange, IP address/exchange, and have also added
/user_name to the end of all of those with no luck.

I would imagine routing through foreign systems is not bad. You just need
to get past the firewall or ensure that the proper ports allow you to pass
through or accept your connection. Also, you need to ensure that proper
virus-protection mechanisms are loaded. If you have to find a backdoor into
the system, that could get messy. It would best be avoided.

Re: Front-end/Back-end ???

2001-08-30 Thread Tom . H . Burke

OK. I only have OWA working in a test lab, but this is what we do: we set the
homepage in the browser Properties to 'http://servername/exchange'. With
Integrated Windows Authentication, what happens is that the browser
automatically passes the credentials through to IIS when challenged, and there
is no need to complete an authentication dialogue box.

I think it's worth persisting with checking the logs, esp. the IIS logs. You
mention that when you untick Basic Authentication, you get passed through to the
backend server, and then get an Error 404. This sounds as if authentication is
working in that case; ie, authentication at the front end IIS server. The
location of the IIS log files are specified in the Server properties (that's
IIS) - in Internet Services Manager right-click the 'Default Web Site', select
Properties, select the Web Site tab, and make sure that the following values are
set:- Enable Logging is ticked, and the logging format is set to 'W3C Extended
Log File format'. If you've not touched this area before it's likely that the
defaults have been left, in which case the log files will be in
\winnt\system32\logfiles\W3SVC1... They are text files, one per day, and can be
opened by double-clicking. The value of them is that they show the resources
being requested, and who is requesting them. Once you've confirmed that logging
is on, and that you can see the logfiles, try and connect again with Basic
Authentication turned OFF, let the error happen, and then go back and check the
IIS log file. See what's happening. There'll always be an anonymous connection
attempt first - that's the http protocol default behaviour. Thereafter there
should be lines that show the following requests, and who's making them. If the
request is being passed through to the back-end server then you should see the
requests appearing under the name of your user, and the resource they're asking
for. That should tell you that authentication is happeneing, and with what
value, and what's being looked for.

Tom

If you trust the company enough to dial-up to it. Why not do an IMC---IMC connection. All that is needed is a known password on both ends that both admins share and can be specific to this IMC instance so they aren't giving away any secrets. I've done that many times at other companies. It works very well.

I can't seem to locate the Q article for reference. But there is one. I've seen it.

We have a 3MB limit, however, I do have some individual users who have
higher limits. Mostly in Marketing for graphics files to vendors.

Hello,

We are beginning to implement a policy of limiting all incoming/outgoing
messages to 5mb. I just wanted a consensus of size limits are set by other
companies. What size limit have you implemented?

Thanks,

RE: Mailbox sizes: Incoming/Outgoing messages

2001-08-30 Thread Diane Beckham

Not my decision. Upper management consensus. Due to in-house users sending
10MB files to other company users who are on the road on a 56K modem.
Remember all my users use PST's. I would get 3 calls a day asking me to go
to their mailbox and kill that message. Too funny!

E2K Forwarding

2001-08-30 Thread Clayton Doige

Hi, I posted this the other day, but shall try again...

I wish to enable forwarding on my mail server so that messages sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] on my server get forwarded to [EMAIL PROTECTED] on a separate server
which is not part of our org, and no connectors exist (and I don't want them
to either) Both mail servers are behind the same firewall.

In 5.5 this was fairly straight forward, routing tab, put in the domain and
IP etc.. However in 2000, I can't get my head around it. On the general tab
of the smtp connector, there are two options, use DNS or a smart host. I
have put an MX record in my DNS for domain.b, but this does not work.

Am I right in thinking that the only way to add their server as a smart host
is to create a site connector or similar? I don't want to do that, and I
only wish this to occur for one of our domain names. And before you come
back and say Just use a rule, remember that I am inside the firewall, as
are they, so no mail from my server can currently reach theirs.

I hope this all makes sense, and I am sure that it is fairly simple to
implement, but I can't get my head around it with E2K.

I really hope you can help me with this.

Thanks in advance

_Auto Accept Utilities Question

With exchangecodes' auto accept utilities is there a way to make the script
auto accept with a conflict. e.g. If a meeting request is sent that

Is this possible with auto accept utilities?

It's just as easy in E2K. (I thought I answered this? Maybe just in my

You configure forwarding to a smart host. I've done it on the SMTP virtual
server, but I think it's preferred using an SMTP connector because of
greater granular control over what passes through.

The help file is clear on this, as well as:

I would imagine routing through foreign systems is not
bad. You just need to get past the firewall or
ensure that the proper ports allow you to pass through

I would imagine routing through foreign systems is not
bad. You just need to get past the firewall
or ensure that the proper ports allow you to pass through or accept your connection. Also, you need to ensure
  that proper virus-protection mechanisms are
loaded. If you have to find a backdoor into the system, that could get messy. It would best be
  avoided.

Hello,

We are beginning to implement a policy of limiting all incoming/outgoing
messages to 5mb. I just wanted a consensus of size limits are set by other
companies. What size limit have you implemented?

Thanks,

Hello All,

I did a little research, but didn't find anything...I remember reading that
there is a process that removes permission's to pub folders periodically
based on account status (ie deleted, removed). Was I dreaming?? (hopefully
not about exchange). What I have are a bunch of left over admin names
listed in the permission's for pub folders. Not a big deal, just
annoying...

you know what annoys me is that the default for public folders is not
invisible. any Tom Dick and Harry can make public folders which is good but
they should be invisible by default so there is not 17 zillion in accessable

That's just a furthering of Microsoft's permissions philosophy, which is
open, with the ability to shut.

Remember, Public Folders are sorta supposed to be administered by users,
since Outlook is really the primary PF management tool (PFADMIN is
different, look for an article on it coming to an issue of Exchange-Outlook
Administrator Magazine near you!). If they had to think about who to allow
to see it, rather than who to disallow, their brains would explode.

Sometimes things feel like they are just going to explode. Those are the
times you just have to wrap your hands around it and get it done.
Other times you have to outsource the project. You hope the consultant
is well versed in this type of work and knows how to keep from giving
too much lip service and just can get the job done before the whole

RE: cleanup of Pub folder permission's??

2001-08-30 Thread Patrick Smallwood

Thanks!! Didnt even see my post (must check settings)...I realize that
these should be managed by users/owners. Actually the PUBLIC folder
shouldnt be public. It contains VERY sensitive info and only 3 people want
access (had to change default/anonymous client perm to none). Invisible
wouldnt get me much here

I did find the article, I must learn to search a little deeper before
firing off an email. But not sure if it is really needed.
Thanks!!

When we remove a user from NT, is there anyway to clean

  this: /O=RUR/OU=CITY/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=USERNAME. We have a

thought I might need to use the Update Now button on

you know what annoys me is that the default for public folders is not
invisible. any Tom Dick and Harry can make public folders which is good
but
they should be invisible by default so there is not 17 zillion in
accessable
public folders. especially when they get mirrored on other sites but not
actually replicated. crappy design.

Not a big deal, just
annoying...

It has been my experience that most admins frown on backdoor access to their
systems. If you aren't having any luck with the standard port, I'd check
for access to an available alternate port. Start by doing a reverse lookup.
