RE: LDAP

2001-09-06 Thread Keith Nelson

No it isn't configured that way by default.

You need to find out what info needs to be queryed by the anonymous
connection
Then you must give the everyone or anonymous logon group access to read
this information from active directory. They need to beable to list the
contents of the OU you want to give access to and then beable to read
attributes of User Objects.

Do not
think the patch will work for SP3.  Check the MS01-047 technet article, the
patch
is
written for SP4.  This is the reason why we upgrade our site from SP3 to
SP4 and then
apply
this patch.

Outlook
can automatically check pop accounts at intervals - say 5
minutes.

Offices
are part of the organization and I have requested either to put them on the
WAN or to allow VPN which we have available but higher ups want it
this way.

I even
suggested leaving them on the old server which is a pop server and just set
up CR's for them to get them on the GAL but got shot down on
that.

I don't
like doing it this way personally but

Was
rereading your response and just noticed the second line

POP
doesn't support subfolders below the inbox, either.

Is that just in Exchange POP?

I have always had multiple subfolders below my inbox
on the old POP server we are moving off of.

Thanks.

It's not *bad* practice.

It's one of the client options.

You must properly secure your server against relay should you allow
SMTP from the same POP clients.

Personally, I favour IMAP as the remote client
protocol.

I remember reading on here many months ago that it is a bad
practice to allow users to pop into your exchange server.
I cannot remember why and I am running that battle

I searched the archives but do not see anything.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Bummer.  Well I think Clear Channel has a couple of stations up here
in Anchorage. I could round up some people that are listeners and call the
powers that be and voice our disapproval of their suggested configuration for
remote access to corporate email. If you think that would help.

Hello
Could not find anything on the Archives on this so hopefully
one of you will have dealt with it
Exchange 5.5 sp4 NT 4.0 sp6a
Sent a question about POP a few days ago and am in the
process of implementing it.  My boss has talked to MS PSS just to be
sure and he is telling me we are going to need to use a different SMTP
server for them to send against.  I thought using the setting in the
POP connector for Exchange to relay for authenticated users in conjunction
with having the Outlook client be set to "My Server requires Authentication"
should allow them to send.  These guys will be using various methods of
accessing the internet from DSL to dialup so I cannot set IP settings for
it.
I have not implemented this yet but my tests from home using
my cable modem seem ok.
Any one have any insights?
TIA
Jim

RE: SuperCache

2001-09-06 Thread Ellery July

Why would you want to use it. I would think you would run the risk of
corrupting your exchange logs. Besides the last time I heard RAID was a big
no-no with it.

Would not more memory be cheaper and better in the long run?

Has anyone used this program (SuperCache) on their Exchange Server or SQL

I wonder if it would help on a IIS server?

My exchange server is just a 450Mhz PC with 256MB of RAM (Exchange 5.5 SP4,
NT 4.0 SP6a) with about 70 users. I can use all the speed I can cheaply
find :-)

RE: Antigen

2001-09-06 Thread Sean Martin

Hey now I didn't say to 'block' .mp3, .mpg, etc. I merely said he could
set the real-time scan to notify on those file types to report any users
saving an abundant amount of those files in their mailboxes. This works for
me because we're an insurance agency and not many of our clients sound or
video record their requests to us, thus meaning they're not relative to
business functions.

However, I do block those file types in the Internet Scan. The users brought
this on themselves.and I enjoy the power ;o)

Has anyone used this program (SuperCache) on their Exchange Server or SQL
Server?
I wonder if it would help on a IIS server?

My exchange server is just a 450Mhz PC with 256MB of RAM (Exchange 5.5 SP4,
NT 4.0 SP6a) with about 70 users. I can use all the speed I can cheaply
find :-)

TIA,
Diane

This
is definitely a documented issue.  We worked with Dell on this.  The
reason other people aren't having this problem is because it only shows up under
a heavy I/O load.  Our databases average roughly 40gb.  We were hit
hard by this.

Exchange. On multipleoccasions we've experienced a failure in the RAID
which caused the RAID tofail-out a disk drive (although subsequent diag
shows no disk problems).Exchange has become corrupt consistently when this
happened. Also, when theRAID controller issues a "Battery Charge OK"
message (it is a trickle-chargecache battery), Exchange often hiccups with
a trashed log file or corruptdatabase. We've reported this problem to
Dell tech support repeatedly. Over the year,we've been given new RAID

KSHGS is an accounting/consulting firm, and probably bills for their time.  I'll bet when they consult with a services client they tell them that a strict timesheet entry policy is crucial to business success.

Since people cant seem to think for themselves and keep up with their own
stuff.  I have to set up an email that will be sent out every Monday morning
to tell everyone that they need to do their time sheets.  Before I do a ton
of research on this was wondering if anyone has ever done  this.  To answer
a few questions first off... We have exchange 5.5 with outlook 2000.  I
already told management I could set up and appointment for around 3am Monday
morning when no one is in the office and when they log on the reminder will
come up.  They said this is NO GOOD they must have it be an e-mail not on
the calendar.  I asked why and they said they did not want to clutter up the
calendar even though it would be at 3am and I am sure no one is having
appointments at that time (unless to meet with the mistress).  SO
instead of a reminder on the calendar they junk up their email with a
message that they will just delete

Any help is appreciated in advance

If you're just doing an eval, start with the most common:

.exe
.vbs
.bat
.js
etc.

Send yourself some of these files from an outside address and witness
Antigen's unrelenting power.

You could also enter common file types such as .jpg, .doc, .txt, etc and set
it to notify only. For the Real-Time scan, add such types as .mpg, .mp3, etc
and set to notify. This would report those file types currently in
mailboxes. Just in case you have a problem with oversized mailboxes.

RE: Changing exchange 5.5 server to another domain

2001-09-06 Thread Matt Bullock

I tried this on my personal server one day, but eventually changed the
domain name back to the original. I think it would have worked if I had
been persistent enough with the permissions. The main thing is to change
the domain name, then make sure the entire domain is synchronized. Head to
the Services and (while you are there change anything that was using an
account) reassign the Exchange services to the new account i.e.
OLDDOMAIN\EXCHANGEUSER to NEWDOMAIN\EXCHANGEUSER. You will have to change
the permissions inside the Exchange Administrator as well.

Hello - Having read some info about the pitfalls of moving an Exchange 5.5
server to another domain, and that it is not a good idea to do so. I would
like to know if any of you have tried it and how did you do it. This
particular server is a member of a site with a couple of other exchange
servers.

RE: Recovery server

2001-09-06 Thread Bob Peitzke
Title: Message

As a
corollary, if I build a new Exchange server with same version/SP and join a new
site with the same name as production site, and set up the same organization
name, install the IMS, and move the priv, pub & dir stores onto it, run
isinteg -patch if needed, and give it the IP address of the production server
(which I'd change to a different IP address and rename per Q155269), I should be
able to use the new server as the production server, and use the old production
server as my recovery server, right?

  server

  I know
this has been addressed before but please bear with me. I'm ramping up to
build a single mailbox recovery server. I've read the Exchange 5.5 Disaster
Recovery Server white paper. I'm using ArgggServIT 6.61 on a member server
with agents to backup the current Exchange server which is a BDC Dell with a
mirrored set for the OS, mirrored set for the log files and a Raid 5 with
striping for the database. The recovery server will have two large IDE drives.
  So

  1)
I build the recovery server as a member of the domain, installing NT and
Exchange with the exact service packs as the current Exchange BDC. Will this
create any issues with two Exchange servers on my network? I realize when I
install Exchange on the recovery box I create a new site with the same site
and organization name as the existing Exchange server, not join
  site.
  2)
Once the recovery server is built and on my LAN I can then light some candles
and sacrifice some chickens and restore the Private Store to the recovery
server across the network from my member back up server. Then export the
mailbox I need to a PST and attach it to the required mailbox.

  Am I
missing anything? Two servers on the network running Exchange worries me for
some reason. Does the partitioning matter on the recovery server? I plan to
break the first drive into two partitions, one for the OS and one for the
logs. Second drive I'll use for the database. I'm really trying to avoid
shooting myself in the foot. Thanks in advance for your wisdom and
  flames.

  Depends on what you're running.

Intensive server side applications would benefit from greater processor
  power than would www.tiggercam.co.uk .

Exchange2000 OWA uses less server side resources than its Exchange5.5
predecessor, with the move away from Active Server Pages.

  I can't find a

does it make sense that it would benefit from having more than one

1)
I believe that NTBackup (exchange aware) from WindowsNT does not allow
backup to disk, only to tape.

2)
Our users don't know whether they access 1 or 12 servers, or even what OS is
on them.  They have multiple share mappings of
course.

I can't afford the upgrade (at
the moment), however doesn't the exchange aware Backup allow backing up to
  disk?
  Because the Exchange server
will no longer be the file and print server unless I use DFS to map from
the BDC/Exchange server to the PDC where the data actually
  resides.

That's
not bad.

1)
If you go to W2K, you can back exchange up to disk (did you mention the need
to purchase a tape drive?)

2)
Why do you have to teach your users that there are 2 servers?  They
needn't know.

I thought this was interesting...feed back? Drawbacks?

From: Mark Minasi's Windows 2000/NT Newsletter
Issue #17 September 2001

An Innovative Way To Combat E-Mail Viruses
I recently whined aloud in the e-mail newsletter that I do for Windows 2000
Magazine (get it free at http://www.win2000mag.net/email/#) about how bloody
tired I was that people are still opening attachments without looking
closely at them. Reader Brian Davis had a great idea: redefine the VBS,
Javascript, REG and similar files so that the default when you click on them
is not to EXECUTE... but to OPEN them. Brilliant and, like most great
ideas, should have obvious from the beginning! You can, of course, still
run scripts -- but you must do it by right-clicking them and choosing
"Execute" or "Run" instead of "Open." Here's Brian's Regedit script to make
this happen:

REGEDIT4

"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\WSHFile\Shell]

True and also Win 2000 with Exch 5.5 NTBACKUP will then be exchange aware
and also allow backups to disks. Not sure about network folders but I see
no reason it will not work. I just haven't tried it yet.

RE: NT / Exchange on a budget

2001-09-06 Thread Lefkovics, William

1) I
believe that NTBackup (exchange aware) from WindowsNT does not allow backup to
disk, only to tape.

2) Our
users don't know whether they access 1 or 12 servers, or even what OS is on
them.  They have multiple share mappings of course.

Exchange on a budget

I can't afford the upgrade (at the
moment), however doesn't the exchange aware Backup allow backing up to
  disk?
  Because the Exchange server will
no longer be the file and print server unless I use DFS to map from the
BDC/Exchange server to the PDC where the data actually
  resides.

That's
not bad.

1)
If you go to W2K, you can back exchange up to disk (did you mention the need to
purchase a tape drive?)

2)
Why do you have to teach your users that there are 2 servers?  They needn't
know.

Do you have any idea how
many years some of us have been doing that?  Kevin Miller had this idea in the
  last millenium.

  1) It is not
innovative.  It's a basic file association option.  The
  fact
that Mr Minasi has just figured it out
explains a lot of the mediocrity found in his books (they're ok.
  they're just far from great.).
  Innovative would be to have
the extension .vbs open with Outlook, but with certain
  parameters.
    Create an Outlook form
preaddressed to IT and CC: the CEO.  Publish this form as
  VirusAlert.
Within the form you would use VBA code
  to automatically send, something like:

  Function Item_Open()

      Item.Send

  End Function
The body of the email can
  pull from local environment variables:
  Warning:  %username%
  has clicked on an attachment!
  Now make vbs files open
  with this association: outlook.exe /c IPM.Note.VirusAlert

  An email gets
  sent.

  That's innovative.
And a total waste of resources, of course, but innovative.

  2) The virus is still
  there.

I recently whined aloud in the e-mail
newsletter that I do for Windows 2000 Magazine (get it free at http://www.win2000mag.net/email/#) about how
  bloody
tired I was that people are still
opening attachments without looking closely at them.  Reader Brian
Davis had a great idea:  redefine the VBS, Javascript, REG and similar
files so that the default when you click on them is not to EXECUTE... but to
OPEN them.  Brilliant and, like most great ideas, should have obvious
from the beginning!  You can, of course, still run scripts -- but you must
do it by right-clicking them and choosing "Execute" or "Run" instead of
"Open."  Here's Brian's Regedit script to make this
  happen:

it's possible that the ns.iim.co.uk server has been compromised and is being
used to try to send mail from you. Have you sent an email to their
postmaster to see if they know anything about it?

It looks like it could be a nameserver for iim.co.uk (hence the 'ns' bit of
the
server name) but for some reason it's trying to come in on port 25, thus
exercising your SMTP server.

There is an 'iim.co.uk'; they claim to be a 'full service & design' company.

SBS45/Exch55 - Help! How to create a "shared" mailbox?

2001-09-06 Thread Sanford Olson

Hi everyone!

I'm brand new to the list, so I hope I'm doing this
correctly.  ;-)

We have a Microsoft Small Business Server v4.5
(basically WinNT 4.0 Server plus Exchange Server v5.5).  We are using
Outlook 2000 as our e-mail client.

I want to create a shared "support" mailbox ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) that would be
accessible to 4 people.  What I'd like is that all the Replies created
by these 4 people to the messages in this mailbox stay in this mailbox with
the messages, so that we all know what the others have already handled,
etc.  (Some sort of message threading would be awesome!!).  This seems
like a pretty standard thing to me... Most companies have "sales" and "support"
e-mail addresses, so how do they implement them?

1.  I tried creating a "Support" mailbox
and opening it as an "additional mailbox" in Outlook 2k.  I enabled
"Advanced E-mail Options"::"In folders other than the Inbox, save replies with
original message".  However, when I reply to a message in this mailbox, my
reply is stuck in the Outbox of my personal mailbox.  The reply is actually
sent, but in Outlook, it stays stuck in Outbox and thus looks like it wasn't
sent.  Maybe I'm missing some permissions setting... (I set all the ones I
could find...)

2.  I tried creating a public folder of "Mail
Items", set the SMTP e-mail address appropriately.  However, when I reply
to a message in this public folder, Outlook won't let me save the "Sent Item"
back into this public folder.

3.  I glanced at the Team Folders stuff, but
it seems a bit much.. requiring a web server and I don't think it allows
messages to/from the general public.

Is anyone aware of a 3rd-party app that plays well
with Exchange Server and would provide simple message tracking, threading, etc
for a very small company (4 people)?  We are planning to upgrade to
Win2K/Exch2K at some point, so if this is a new feature of Exch2K, let me
know.

Thanks!!

- Sanford

Matt, Address Book Views are an effective way to restrict GAL access.
We have 2 separate businesses running in a single Exchange site. Address

It works flawlessly. ( including ARGserveIT 6.61) in addition, this recovery
server is also my backup server.

Works great, less filling, and I’m using a server that CPQ wouldn’t take
back even if WE paid them to take it.

Subject: Recovery server

I know this has been
addressed before but please bear with me. I'm ramping up to build a single
mailbox recovery server. I've read the Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery Server
white paper. I'm using ArgggServIT 6.61 on a member server with agents to
backup the current Exchange server which is a BDC Dell with a mirrored set for
the OS, mirrored set for the log files and a Raid 5 with striping for the
database. The recovery server will have two large IDE drives. So

1)    I
build the recovery server as a member of the domain, installing NT and Exchange
with the exact service packs as the current Exchange BDC. Will this create any
issues with two Exchange servers on my network? I realize when I install
Exchange on the recovery box I create a new site with the same site and
organization name as the existing Exchange server, not join site.

2)    Once
the recovery server is built and on my LAN I can then light some candles and sacrifice
some chickens and restore the Private Store to the recovery server across the
network from my member back up server. Then export the mailbox I need to a PST
and attach it to the required mailbox.

Am I missing anything?
Two servers on the network running Exchange worries me for some reason. Does
the partitioning matter on the recovery server? I plan to break the first drive
into two partitions, one for the OS and one for the logs. Second drive I'll use
for the database. I'm really trying to avoid shooting myself in the foot.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and flames.

Why not build as a BDC, take it off network, promote it, rename it to
the same as your existing exchange server, install exchange and arcserve
(h).  It will need a tape drive to run the restore and to take the
pst off.

BE
instead of UltraBac?  If I get to make a switch I'm going to give them a
chance, although I thought their program seemed kind of goofy to set up - each
server was it's own 'project' I think they called it, and then you ran multiple
'projects'.  But I've heard really good things about their service.

RE: Recovery server
Why not build as a BDC, take it off network, promote it, rename it to
the same as your existing exchange server, install exchange and arcserve
(h).  It will need a tape drive to run the restore and to take the
pst off.

I know this has been addressed before but please
bear with me. I'm ramping up to build a single mailbox recovery server.
I've read the Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery Server white paper. I'm using
ArgggServIT 6.61 on a member server with agents to backup the current
Exchange server which is a BDC Dell with a mirrored set for the OS,
mirrored set for the log files and a Raid 5 with striping for the
database. The recovery server will have two large IDE drives.
  So

  1)    I build the recovery server
as a member of the domain, installing NT and Exchange with the exact
service packs as the current Exchange BDC. Will this create any issues
with two Exchange servers on my network? I realize when I install Exchange
on the recovery box I create a new site with the same site and
organization name as the existing Exchange server, not join
  site.
  2)    Once the recovery server is
built and on my LAN I can then light some candles and sacrifice some
chickens and restore the Private Store to the recovery server across the
network from my member back up server. Then export the mailbox I need to a
PST and attach it to the required mailbox.

Am I missing anything? Two servers on the network
running Exchange worries me for some reason. Does the partitioning matter
on the recovery server? I plan to break the first drive into two
partitions, one for the OS and one for the logs. Second drive I'll use for
the database. I'm really trying to avoid shooting myself in the foot.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and flames.

Maybe
I'm missing the boat here. I want the recovery server on the network for single
mailbox recovery options, not disaster recovery. Why would I want to promote it
etc. I think a member server as part of the domain should work fine. I think I
should be able to restore form my current member backup
server.

Thanks
Ben. This is exactly what I intend to do. The recovery server will have a
different machine name than the production server.

  Recovery server

  Because
  it’s more complicated.  That
practice is only necessary if you are going to restore the Directory as well
as the IS.  If you keep it on the
same domain and just install Exchange in new org and site with the same name
as the production, you can still restore the IS, and even do it from the same
tape drive.  This helps a lot with
Arcserve, since you don’t have to take the additional step of merging the tape
  into the Arcserve database.  I’ve
done both now, and believe me, it is MUCH easier to put the recovery server on
  the same domain.  I don’t think I
would worry about the drives so much, especially since it is just a recovery
server.  Just make sure that you
have enough space on the 2nd hard drive for the entire IS.  Restoring with Arcserve, you want to
restore the whole IS, not just the Priv.
Otherwise, it can crap on you.
Play around with it a bit.
There are some other options you may want to use in Arcserve.  Check their website a little bit (not
too much though, as it could turn your brain into gravy or something
  worse).  Good
  luck.

Exchange 5.5 and Legato Co-Standyby NT

2001-09-06 Thread kdl
Title: Exchange 5.5 and Legato Co-Standyby NT

I hope someone can help with this:

We are currently running our entire office on a mirrored cluster using Legato CoStandby server. This includes the PDC, SQL server 7.0 and Exchange 5.5 SP3. We would like (because of inconsistencies with Legato Support of Exchange) to move exchange over to another standalone server.

Our plan was to use the Ed Crowley method of moving an exchange server. However, when we try to install the Exchange 5.5 on the new machine, it fails when it tries to replicate the directory with an error c1030b0d. Tried reinstalling several times and always got this error.

The event log had two failed events stating that a file cannot be found (no specific file). These were event ID 7000 and 7001. I have had a similar problem with Exchange and Costandby before and have never been able to get another machine or directory to Sync with it.

My question is:

Is their any way to rename an exchange 5.5 server? My thoughts are to restore the Exchange IS and DS to the new machine (offline) with the existing name and then change it to a new name. Is this possible?

If not, does anyone have any good ideas?

Thanks,
