I've
seen this coming up after installing sp2. It is paired with 2104 and
2102. I think it will be fixed in sp3.I am *almost* sure you
can ignore this.

But
confirm: Is the GAL there and ok? Are there custom
address lists and are they ok?

Hi Mike,

Been using same Exchange version as your

Also did a MS led course on Exchange 2000 and is part of the course work. Also see

Subject: mail-enabled contact...

Sorry guys I know this is a stupid
question, but I am working for a new company, tomorrow is day 2. From
what I can find on technet/google articles, I can use a mail-enabled
contact to forward messages coming tomy domain to another domain, ie [EMAIL PROTECTED] forwards to [EMAIL PROTECTED]. I don't
think I would have to setup a mailbox, but figured I would check with you
guys. I have done some testing, and this does seem to work fine without
the mailbox, but my boss wants to KNOW that this is how it is supposed to work,
not just working for some mysterious unknown magical force, ie the
Laser Guided Packet-Finder. I have only been able to test
this on my lan, as I am currently migrating from BSDI 4.2 Sendmail with Qpopper
to Exchange 2000 sp2 with the exact same domain name. When I give the go,
hopefully by Wednesday, I need to have this live andrunning.

Let me know what you think

Thanks,

Reject mails to ...

2002-03-19 Thread Patrick Straub

Hello

We are using Exchange 5.5 SP3 on an NT4 sp6a machine.
From time to time I get some mails to people that have left the company,
that I would like to reject. Is there a way to do this? I have seen that the
only options exchange has are to reject mails from, but not mail to.

Thanks for any input.

Do you mean reject as in non-deliver which surely can be achieved by
deleting the mailbox or accept the message and tell the original sender that
this person has left the company - this can be achieved by redirecting the
mail to a dead letter box which has a rule/event script working to send back
such a message. More details available if required.

RE: Reject mails to ...

2002-03-19 Thread Patrick Straub

Kevin

what I'm looking for is an option in exchange to do the reject. There are
some options to reject from but not reject to.
The problem I have is that I already have deleted those mailboxes, but I
have the feeling that somebody that left the company is using those old
mail adresses to login to porn sites, and as mail administrator I get the
rejected mails from exchange. So an option to automatically drop a mail sent
to one of the none existant mail adresses would be very helpfull.

Thanks for your help.
Best regards, Patrick

Good
grief, don't do that!
Put a
simple SMTP machine in your DMZ to forward internet mail to your Exchange server
(leaving Exchange inside). Only allow external SMTP traffic to Exchange
via the external SMTP server (through your firewall).
That'll be $10,000 (consultant's fee) - please.

Your consultant
is wrong. Very wrong. Ask for your money back.

Essentially, yes,
you can move your exchange server into a DMZ, but you will end up punching so
many holes into the corporate LAN, that you DMZ will be worthless.

I would be akin

RE: Secondary email server

2002-03-19 Thread Jim Holmgren

You
might want to investigate programs like Mail Essentials,Norton Anti-Virus
for Gateways, or Mail Marshall (several others have been mentionedon this
listthat I cannot recall off the top of my head)...they add some
additional functionality above SMTP, plus if you area *nix dolt (like me)
they all run under Win2K/NT. You could also use the SMTP services built
into IIS5 (Win2K) to do this.

*Not
that there is anything wrong with setting up Qmail, etc as a
backup/forwardinghost.

Definitely sounds NOS related to me. Try re-applying SPx for your NOS and
see if that changes anything. Sounds like something got horked (official admin

Services terminating unexpectedly!

2002-03-19 Thread Paul Armstrong

I keep getting errors in my logs about services terminating unexpectedly
and I am unsure if they are related to Exchange2K or Win2K or both! The
error is Event ID: 7031 and the error is:
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated unexpectedly.
It has done this 17 time(s). The following corrective action will be
taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

This error occurs for the following services: IISAdmin, Exchange IMAP4,
NNTP, Exchange POP3, Exchange Routing Engine, SMTP, WWW. All in that
order.

I have done searches on technet for the Event ID and it responds with
nothing related to this issue. I have no idea why this is occuring. The
server is W2K SP2 running Exchnage2K and SQL2K. The last thing that was
installed on the box was Diskkeeper which I didn't install. I am not
sure if the issue is related to Diskkeeper. The events I see before this
issue deals with an IIS stop stop command being issued by the NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and also the NNTP service being started. The only other
errors I get are Event ID: 36871 which deals with SSL certs which arent
being used and Technet states that there isn't a fix for this other than
installing a cert to the SMTP site or that it can be safely ignored.

Any ideas on why this is happening? Anybody have this issue before. TIA!

You
could put an SMTP relay on a server in the DMZ and have it relay to your
Exchange server. ButI would avoid putting the Exchange server on the
DMZ. Relay such as NA WebShield SMTP (I can't believe I just suggested an
NAI product, use TREND's if you do this). You used to have Sendmail for
SMTP but that is no longer available. Heck, I think you could even use the
SMTP in IIS as a relay to internal email if you really want to segragate your
Exchange server from the outside world.

It's not supported for XP.

But it works:
Admin pak from Windows2000 server.
Then Exchange2000 setup with just the management tools.

Ignore the error saying it won't work.

TIA!

Maximum number of SMTP Addresses

2002-03-19 Thread sunbeltsoftwarenewsgroup

Hello.

How many SMTP addresses can be assigned to one Exchange mailbox in
Exchange 5.5

As well, is there a script or easy way to remove numerous SMTP addresses
in the Organization. We currently host a number of SMTP addresses which
we no longer wish to associate with our user's mailboxes, and would like
find an automated way to remove them.

Thank you!

You could put an SMTP relay on a server in the DMZ
and have it relay to your Exchange server. ButI would avoid
putting the Exchange server on the DMZ. Relay such as NA WebShield
SMTP (I can't believe I just suggested an NAI product, use TREND's if you do
this). You used to have Sendmail for SMTP but that is no longer
available. Heck, I think you could even use the SMTP in IIS as a relay
to internal email if you really want to segragate your Exchange server from
the outside world.

You could put an SMTP relay on a server in
the DMZ and have it relay to your Exchange server. ButI
would avoid putting the Exchange server on the DMZ. Relay such
as NA WebShield SMTP (I can't believe I just suggested an NAI product,
use TREND's if you do this). You used to have Sendmail for SMTP
but that is no longer available. Heck, I think you could even
use the SMTP in IIS as a relay to internal email if you really want to
segragate your Exchange server from the outside
  world.

Outlook 2002

2002-03-19 Thread Paul Armstrong

Does anybody know how to disable the function on Outlook 2002 where it
request permissions if another program tries to send thru it? I know
this function is to protect against virii but I am using it on a server
running backupexec 8.6 and I have been having problems sending job
notifications. I can send the notification via SMTP but it doesn't
include the job log so it isn't an option. I can send notifications on a
per job basis but it comes up with the Outlook dialog box warning that
another app is trying to send email and if I want to allow it. When I
try to send on a global basis nothing happens, nothing is sent. i am
wondering if it has to do with this new feature in Outlook2K2. i can
stick to sending the notifications on a per job basis but it isn't going
to send anything because it will be stuck on that box asking what to do?
Any ideas on how to disable this thing or maybe specify which apps can
send thru Outlook? TIA!!

The
nope means that the DB's will still reside in the directories that they were
in. However, as another poster stated, backing up your data would be a
good thing before uninstalling anything...

I use
Cisco unity it ison the expensive side but you do not need to worry about
license agreements and you get e-mails read to you over the phone system. We all
have multimedia computers or laptops here so getting voicemails in outlook is
great when dialing in from the road.

are directed towards enterprise solutions which I haven't seen the WG be
able to handle. However, in smaller flat environments, it has its place.

Exmerge extract errors

2002-03-19 Thread Aaron Kennedy

I've searched the usual places, but couldn't seem to find anything on
this. I'd appreciate any assistance anyone out there might be able to
offer.

Exchange 2k SP1 on Win2k SP2. Trying to extract some mailboxes of old
users to .PST for archiving, but I continue to receive the following
error:

[XX:XX:XX] Error extracting information from server DN ''
(CMapiSession::GetInfoFromProfile)

I'm interpreting this (perhaps incorrectly) as exmerge being unable to
find the source server. However, it can successfully contact the server
to pull a list of mailbox names (and indicates this in the log) and the
server is definitely up and operational.

I've never had a problem exporting messages before and I'm wondering if
I'm just missing something obvious.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

performance issues

2002-03-19 Thread Bob Falkenberg

Hello folks,

Have a hardware issue that has required me to consolidate users from 2
servers on to 1 server. Users are complaining about Outlook just hanging.
This is an Exchange 5.5 sp4 site running on NT 4.0 sp6 servers. The
hardware itself is a Compaq DL 380 Dual Pentium III - 733 with 500 mb of
ram. There is plenty of disk space on the all 3 partitions.

The server went from having about a 190 users on it to having 370 users. I
thought that there would be more then enough CPU and Memory on this box to
accommodate the additional users so that I could trouble shoot the other box
but it doesn't appear so.

Does this box sound like it should be able to accommodate this many users?
Does it need more memory?

Performance monitor shows much higher CPU usage for the STORE which is to be
expected with increase in users but its not pegged all the time.

Opinions?

You could put an SMTP relay on a server in the DMZ
and have it relay to your

 Exchange server on the DMZ.
Relay such as NA WebShield SMTP (I can't believe I
 just suggested an NAI

 have Sendmail for SMTP
but that is no longer available. Heck, I think you
 could even use the SMTP

 want to segragate your
Exchange server from the outside world.

TIA!!

RE: performance issues

2002-03-19 Thread John Matteson

Is your DNS and WINS services running properly? Are Exchange services
running on the old server still (they shouldn't be). Have these users that
complain about Outlook hanging had their workstation profiles (MAIL
profiles, not workstation profile) nuked and rebuilt from scratch?

Usually a hung Outlook client can be traced back to DNS/WINS that is
misconfigured or just plain broke. Since you just changed users to a new
server, the client may be attempting to connect to the old server, and
having to wait until things time out before realizing that the mailbox is on
a different server. If the old exchange server is not to be used anymore,
you may want to remove it from the WINS/DNS database.

And BTW, your box sounds like it has plenty of horsepower to support 370
users. Just make sure that you have enough disk space on all the drives,
especially the log drive.

accommodate the additional users so that I could trouble shoot the other box
but it doesn't appear so.

Does this box sound like it should be able to accommodate this many users?
Does it need more memory?

Performance monitor shows much higher CPU usage for the STORE which is to be
expected with increase in users but its not pegged all the time.

Opinions?

Thanks for the info.

2 different users with same symptoms have had their outlook profiles nuked

I have not disabled the other server yet as I am still moving public folders

the other server on to this one over the weekend. I didn't want to remove
the server from the site if I could get it repaired and move folks back on

Put a simple SMTP machine

O O F Replies

2002-03-19 Thread Simon Curtiss

The joy of defending disallowing O O F replies has fallen to me at last.

Apart from

1) Mail Loops
2) Annoying the thousands of people on mailing lists you are subscribed to
(yes I know you can subscribe from PF's)
3) Can only be turned on/off for whole org
4) Not all e-mail systems will necesarily get the O O F reply (not sure this
is true these days?)
5) Staff issues - not turning on/off appropriately, not updating text of
message
6) Not Best Practice as customer may never see it, and it place the onus of
communication on the customer

Shame auotmatic replis to the internet is a different control as then this
would not be an issue!

Can anyone think of any other ammo - the archives contain nothing much as we
obviously haven't discussed this in the last month - shock horror!

Re: mail-enabled contact...(Revisited and rephrased)

2002-03-19 Thread Mike Zatkalik

Afterrereadingmy previousmessage
I realized that I didn't say what I was trying to do correctly, and hoped to run
it by you guys again. My real problem is that I don't understand
completely the idea of how a mail-enabled contact works.

INFO:

mydomain.comwork
domain
[EMAIL PROTECTED] work
email
[EMAIL PROTECTED] home
email
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(You guessed it, my bosses email)

Ok, without creating a user in AD, I want to create
a mail-enabled contact called "ME" with external address of [EMAIL PROTECTED], internal is [EMAIL PROTECTED], created with every new
"object" in AD. There is NOT a user called "ME" nor any other reference to
this name in AD.

If someone sends from an email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED], addressed
to [EMAIL PROTECTED], will automatically
forward the message on to [EMAIL PROTECTED]? Or, as that TechNet
articles sort of implies, you must create a user to forward to a mail-enabled
contact? If people are currently just having a mail-enabled contact,
without a user/mailbox, have you read this somewhere, or did you just find that
out and say, wow, cool that works? During testing this theory, we found
that it does work internally, however we are not live with this system, and the
user database has already been "migrated"over with existing aliases and
addresses. (upgrading from BSDI 4.2 Sendmail with popper so mail is
probably not going to be moved, most likely it will just be merged with new mail
in OE via POP3.)

Sorry I didn't ask properly the first time, will
try not to let it happen again.

TIA,

Mike

Sorry guys I know this is a stupid
question, but I am working for a new company, tomorrow is day 2. From
  what I can find on technet/google articles, I can use a mail-enabled
contact to forward messages coming tomy domain to another domain, ie [EMAIL PROTECTED] forwards to [EMAIL PROTECTED]. I don't
think I would have to setup a mailbox, but figured I would check with you

the mailbox, but my boss wants to KNOW that this is how it is supposed to
work, not just working for some "mysterious" unknown magical force, ie the
"Laser Guided Packet-Finder." I have only been able to test this on my
lan, as I am currently migrating from BSDI 4.2 Sendmail with Qpopper to
