RE: Two Domain Names on Exchange

2011-01-06 Thread Peter Johnson
Use Outlook 2010 as the client, add the second mailbox into the profile and
when you are in the second mailbox's inbox and reply to an e-mail it will set
the from address to that mailbox name automatically assuming you have full
access permission set up on the mailbox.

This based on the user having access to two mailboxes with the different e-mail
addresses applied to each mailbox.

I've got a similar setup albeit for different reasons.

Not without third-party software.

Exchange will always use your primary smtp address as the reply address if

I've heard of people setting up additional mailboxes with the additional

setting it to forward all the email to the user's primary mailbox.

You can also send as a secondary address through POP.

Does anyone know if you can have two Domain Names on Exchange and select from
Outlook which one to use?

Let me explain:

Company ABC.com has an Exchange server and everything is ok.

They recently created a new company DEF.com.

Both ABC.com and DEF.com is on the Exchange server.

Everyone has both user-n...@abc.com and
user-n...@def.com.

Some users have ABC.com Domain name as there default reply address and some
have DEF.com as there default reply address.

The problem there are a handful of users that has to switch between ABC.Com and
DEF.com as there reply address and if someone sends an e-mail to them on there
DEF.Com Domain it will automatically use that as there reply address or the
other way as well. Does anyone know if this is doable and if so how?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I'm hoping you guys can help me figure how to diagnose what is going
on here. I have 30 users on this system and the transaction logs on
the mailbox server are way beyond what they should be. I just deleted
75 gig of logs that had accumulated in two weeks. two weeks before
that, I deleted the same amount. We have had this system up for maybe
6 months and this just became a problem a few weeks ago.

Would you suspect some sort of loop issue or massive bounce issue? Any
usual suspects? I'm struggling for a good way to track this down.
We have a separate anti-spam solution in front of exchange and an edge
server, CAS/Hub server and mailbox server. I know the setup is
overkill, but we are using ourselves as guinea pigs before we use 2010
with any clients.

I also have an 80 gig mailbox database, but only sjowing about 18 gigs
in the mailboxes. This might be just due to not having any
mainenance/retention policies enabled, so I'm putting that on the back
burner.

Thanks for any insights.

Exchange 2003 & 2010 Public Folders

2011-01-06 Thread Robert Peterson
Just moved our existing Exchange 2003 Public Folders to our new Exchange 2010
environment and discovered we had a programmer running a script that reads a
specific Public Folder with calendars and writes that calendar data to a Google
calendar. His script does not work when he tries pointing it at Exchange 2010.
Till he figures it out, is there a way to re-establish a Public Folder on the
2003 server that would replicate with the Exchange 2010 side?

Currently, we have a DAG with 4 DB servers, the Public Folder DB is on one of
2010 servers, and replicated copy on another 2010 server. We still have the
Exchange 2003 servers in the mix, but at this point everything is moved to the
2010 side.

Just seeing if I can give this programmer a little more time.

Thanks,
Robert

Yes and it was resolved with IOS 4.0.1. I don't remember reading if it
affected Exchange 2010, though I suspect since the problem could be
temporarily fixed by changing the activesync connection timeout on the
phone, it probably would. You could probably use ExMon (or the Exchange 2010
equivalent) to identify the problem mailbox.

Hi all,

I'm hoping you guys can help me figure how to diagnose what is going on
here. I have 30 users on this system and the transaction logs on the
mailbox server are way beyond what they should be. I just deleted 75
gig of logs that had accumulated in two weeks. two weeks before that, I
deleted the same amount. We have had this system up for maybe 6 months
and this just became a problem a few weeks ago.

Would you suspect some sort of loop issue or massive bounce issue? Any

Agreed. This is what I have setup for others as well (multiple Outlook
profiles or advise to use Outlook for one profile, OWA for the other).

I think that Lynden was looking to do this from within one profile however?
If so, I believe Rob answered that.

Subject: Two Domain Names on Exchange

Does anyone know if you can have two Domain Names on Exchange and select
from Outlook which one to use?

Let me explain:

Company ABC.com has an Exchange server and everything is ok.

They recently created a new company DEF.com.

Both ABC.com and DEF.com is on the Exchange server.

Everyone has both user- n...@abc.com and
user-n...@def.com.

Some users have ABC.com Domain name as there default reply address and
some have DEF.com as there default reply address.

The problem there are a handful of users that has to switch between
ABC.Com and DEF.com as there reply address and if someone sends an
e-mail to them on there DEF.Com Domain it will automatically use that as
there reply address or the other way as well. Does anyone know if this
is doable and if so how?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Two Domain Names on Exchange

2011-01-06 Thread Campbell, Rob
Not without third-party software.

Exchange will always use your primary smtp address as the reply address if
you're using Outlook and an RPC connection to Exchange.

I've heard of people setting up additional mailboxes with the additional
address as the primary, giving the user Send As permission on that mailbox, and
setting it to forward all the email to the user's primary mailbox.

You can also send as a secondary address through POP.

RE: Disk config for Exchange 2010 in virtual machine

I know it is overkill, but I went with a separate DAG & HT/CAS
configuration with 50 users - email is the company's life. Our previous
experience with a poorly configured Ex2k3 server helped make that
decision.

The other option is RAID 50 (smartstart suggests this one) since there are
six disks available. Gives me the same usable drive space as a RAID 5 with
one cold spare.

RE: Outlook 2007 Cached Exchange Mode Best Practice

2011-01-06 Thread PRamatowski
+ a billion

OP is talking 2007 so I don't know if this applies or not (we skipped over
2007) but as far as 2010 and cached mode-

If you're creating/changing message retention tags/policies during a migration
(or I guess at any time) you might want to stagger the application of the
policies to the mailboxes. Applying a tag to a message means a change to the
message and that of course means a resynch.

We learned quickly that we could migrate a few hundred mailboxes from 2K3 to
2K10 overnight. We also learned quickly that it wasn't a good idea to apply
the retention policies to all those mailboxes at once:) Wasn't a terribly big
deal on our fast links but on the slower ones, hoo-boy...

Hello,

It seems turning on Outlook 2007 Cached Exchange Mode is a best practice.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/best-practices-for-outlook-2007-HA010371521.aspx
The first step in following these best practices is to set up a system to
optimize how you use Outlook 2007. It is considered best practice to have the
following: ... Cached Exchange Mode turned on.

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/01/15/432199.aspx
Outlook 2007 in Cached Mode is important for reducing server I/O as much as 70%
over Exchange 2003. The initial mailbox sync is an expensive operation, but
over time, as the mailbox size grows, the disk subsystem burden is shifted from
the Exchange server to the Outlook client.

We have 2000+ Outlook 2007 clients with half laptops and half desktops. Are
there any considerations or side effects if we turn on Cached Exchange Mode
companywide?

You are correct on ExMerge and that is because it only supports ANSI PST's and
they actually start to degrade at about 1.8GB so I would not go over that limit
in order to ensure the data is recoverable

 1. Here is an article on how to script the creation of overflow PST's if you
reach the 2GB limit
http://gsexdev.blogspot.com/2007/01/exporting-mailbox-larger-then-2-gb-and.html
 2. Alternatively:
* You can look at other tools like Kroll PC, Quest RM or Lucid8 DigiScope
that will allow you to export
data from any mailbox on a Production server or from an offline EDB to Unicode
PSTs and also has some other cool features
* Since you only a few mailboxes you should consider just using Outlook
2003 or later to export each mailbox to a Unicode PST since it has a 20GB
limit. (unless you are using Outlook 2010 and then you have a 50GB limit)
When you create a new PST i.e. select "File/New/Outlook Data file" you will
have the option of selecting "Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.PST)"
which is the default selection that will create a Unicode PST or you can select
Outlook

I need to export a couple of mailboxes to PST prior to deleting them, and they

I suspect I'm left with Outlook, so is there anything I need to do/know to

2011-01-06 Thread Richard Stovall
I have to archive stuff out of a couple of our large mailboxes about once a
quarter. I tend to put Outlook into online mode instead of cached mode, and
only move a few hundred items at a time. It just seems to work better that
way over grabbing thousands of items at a time in cached mode. Outlook 2007
screeches to a halt (and sometimes crashes) if I don't take the extra steps.

Maybe something to think about and experiment with.

Or maybe not...

RE: Exporting ALL mailbox content to PST?

2011-01-06 Thread Troy Werelius
No worries and Outlook will get everything EXCEPT for the items that are
hard deleted and or in the dumpster so you may want to use Exmerge to
subsidize the PSTs, i.e. do the main export via outlook and if memory
serves I think you can tell ExMerge to JUST export dumpster items.

You are correct on ExMerge and that is because it only supports ANSI
PST's and they actually start to degrade at about 1.8GB so I would not
go over that limit in order to ensure the data is recoverable

1. Here is an article on how to script the creation of overflow
PST's if you reach the 2GB limit
http://gsexdev.blogspot.com/2007/01/exporting-mailbox-larger-then-2-gb-a
nd.html
2. Alternatively:

* You can look at other tools like Kroll PC, Quest RM or
Lucid8 DigiScope that will
allow you to export data from any mailbox on a Production server or from
an offline EDB to Unicode PSTs and also has some other cool features
* Since you only a few mailboxes you should consider just
using Outlook 2003 or later to export each mailbox to a Unicode PST
since it has a 20GB limit. (unless you are using Outlook 2010 and then
you have a 50GB limit)

When you create a new PST i.e. select "File/New/Outlook Data file" you
will have the option of selecting "Office Outlook Personal Folders File
(.PST)" which is the default selection that will create a Unicode PST or
you can select Outlook

If you've got workstations running across low bandwidth wan links, you need to
be aware that running in cached mode means that new email gets downloaded to
the workstation cache as it's received.

If somebody emails 10Mb of jpgs of the office Christmas party to everyone, the
people at the end of those wan links are going to complain about response time
for awhile.

Thanks,
Kevin

RE: Outlook 2007 Cached Exchange Mode Best Practice

2011-01-06 Thread Campbell, Rob
If you do it via group policy, I'd recommend staggering the workstations that
you enable it on.

Enabling cached mode is going to download the entire contents of the mailbox to
the local machine's hard drive. If all 2000+ workstations start doing this at
the same time there may be some unintended consequences.

In Exchange 2010, you'll want to look into the options allowed when you set up

options that you haven't even considered.

Subject: OUTLOOK Rule creation question for automated response to every email
sent to a mailbox.

Greetings,
New to this list, but have been monitoring.
It looks very good and posting my first question.
My background is Groupwise but we recently migrated to EXCHANGE 2010 SP1.
Still learning the EXCHANGE 2010 environment - so my MS terminology may not be
correct.

Below is the rule we are trying to set up - and I am hopefully missing
something very simple:

We have a "shared mailbox" (MEDIA) that campus users send equipment requests
to on a regular basis.
We want an automated response to EVERY email sent to MEDIA mailbox indicating
something like "your request has been received and we are working on this" or
whatever.

The basic Automatic Replies ( Out of Office ) "wizard" will not do this as it
will reply only once to a given user - which makes sense for Vacation/ Out of
Office rules. However, our users will be sending regular emails to MEDIA that
require a response each time.

I looked into manual rule creation, but not seeing how to set this up so it
will provide an automated email response to EVERY message sent to MEDIA.

Ideally, this would be set up at the "shared mailbox" level so that the person
that monitors that mailbox can change as needed.
However, I could also set up at the HUB TRANSPORT level if that is the only way
to make this work.

Thanks for any help on this.
Please enjoy the holiday weekend.
Dana

Just to clarify, this is happening the user does a "Send/Receive All" or when
he is closing Outlook and it does a "Send/Receive" on close. It does not occur
when he sends an email.

Even then - Outlook should've resolved the address online when you clicked
"Send".

I'm out of ideas. :-(

Especially if it happens in online and offline mode...in online mode, Outlook
shouldn't touch the OAB.

Messages get sent and received. Seems to be when he hits the Address Book.
Online mode. Tried in cached mode, still have error.
Happens with tried with Outlook 2007 and 2010. Just this user.

Do the messages actually get sent and received? That is, is the error spurious?

Is the user in cached or online mode? Does it still occur if you switch modes?
Does it occur when using Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 with this user?

We have one user that when he tries to do a send and receive, gets an "object
could not be found" 0x8004010F error. It seems to be happening when he is
downloading the offline address book. This is the only user it's happening to
and it happens when he is logged in to another workstation.
His mailbox, and the majority of our other mailboxes, are still on our Exchange
2003 server (we're in the middle of a migration). The OAB is residing on the
Excha

seeing this? Thoughts?

RE: Moving exchange db from ad and exchange org to another

2011-01-06 Thread Michael B. Smith
You must have a matching organization name for either one of these to work.

You must have the database in "clean shutdown" for either one of these to work.

Otherwise, I think it should work ok.

Subject: Moving exchange db from ad and exchange org to another

Hi there,

We have a client with approx 100 users and approx 20 of them are moving away to
form a new company.

The currently run on 2008 AD domain with Exchange 2007, and will be moving to
an SBS 2008 setup.

Is it possible to move all these users into a new storage group /Database on
the existing system, and then dismount the store, move the database files to
the new server in new AD, and then mount the DB, and attach the mailboxes to
the new user accounts on the new AD?

Or do we have to do it via a back up and restore to a recovery storage group on
the new server and move the mailboxes across from there?

Thanks in advance

Graeme

Inline images and transport rules

2011-01-06 Thread Oliver Marshall
Does anyone know if it's possible, in Exchange 2007, using a Transport rule (or
frankly even a 3rd party app) to convert inline images to attachments?

That is, we have people pasting images in to emails when they send them to us.
Our DB tool can't display those images so we don't see them. What we need to do
is a way to convert the inline images to attachments so that we can then open
them in our DB/Sales tool.

Any ideas?

Olly
