Somewhat OT

2002-08-02 Thread Bill Beckett

Using Exchange 5.5 with outlook 97. More of an outlook question here.

Some people create hyperlinks to documents on our file server and then send
the links out via email. Most users can click on this link and open the file
(the file can be excel, word, etc). However, there are a few users who
cannot. I have checked for differences and all file associations and don't
see why they cannot open these links. Any ideas?

Yes permissions are there, they can browse to the actual location and open
the file. Outlook just doesn't seem to recognize it as a link

What about permissions to the share? Do these people have appropriate
rights to the file? (i.e. can they browse via windows explorer and open
 the file ok?)
Is an error displayed when they click the link?

That's actually quite a tricky one.

Clustering wouldn't help, since it's shared storage. Why not
upgrade to E2k enterprise and implement multiple databases? At least your
downtime would be minimised if you split your users well. Running the
database utilities wouldn't take that much time with multiple, smaller,
databases.

Exchange 5.5 sp4 NT 4.0 sp6

I am wondering why the Administrator logs on to most but not all
mailboxes,
some mailboxes have not been logged into by the Administrator last.
I'm
looking in Exchange Admin/Connections/Server/Mailbox Resources. You
can see
the NT account that last logged into the mailbox there. I don't
know how
reliable that is, therefore my question As far as I know your
account
gets logged even if you simply check someone's calendar. I know
there are
utils that run on the database each night, could that be one of the
reasons
the Administrator is the last logon to most accounts?

Any information is appreciated.

Yeah, when we took away Help Desk's admin rights they whined and
complained, even resorted to calling us names. I think LAN Gestapo was
the favored name for us for a while. And you should have heard them when we
started cracking down on software licensing.oh my, we took away their
install disks and removed installs from the network made them start coming
through us to obtain keys, o it was bad, but we're now legal on our
software licensing so they can keep whining all they want, we don't listen
to whiners either :P

Yeah, we had a major security change around here which

Oh well. Everyone whines when I take their rights away, everyone seems to
think they deserve or need admin rights here. I think a bit differently.

OWA logon

2002-07-11 Thread Bill Beckett

Can someone explain what the problem is here:

Exchange 5.5, IIS4, OWA installed. A user is trying to access their mailbox
from the web. After logging in, they get a page that says OWA was unable to
get to your inbox. To try and login again, click here. When I click, it
takes them back to the main page, then if I enter the users mailbox name
(not user name), it allows them in. Why am I getting the error in the
beginning?

This from someone who uses Word as their email editor... :P

I love to answer questions when any proper amount of research has
been done and a nice detailed email is constructed asking for more help
because someone may or may not completely understand what information they
received from the research they've done.

As for stupid questions, sorry, never really asked one of those.
I'm just a little bit more than anal about finding the answer myself and
then asking for help if I didn't understand what I was researching. I
suggest you check the archives for the last 5 years and see how many
questions I have posted to ANY list...

In my experience it can lead to instabilities, and weekly reboots.
IIS
can run away with the processor hitting 99% of the processor time,
and
slowing other exchange functions to a crawl. MS has some hotfixes
for
this problem but they don't seem to work in my environment. Stick
OWA

Here is one that will stump even the best of you (although I kind of
hope it
doesn't).

Here is our situation - we have a development 2000 domain with an
exchange
2000 server in it, basically all for testing and staging build
tests. We are
trying to test a blackberry server build from start to finish. One
of the things
blackberry depends on is using an outlook profile to attach to
exchange. The
only problem is - we cannot resolve any user we create in AD and
generate an
email address for. The email address gets generated, it propagates
and all is
good. However, when trying to attach to that profile (resolve it
from the
outlook client) it says it cannot resolve.

1) It appears the servers are talking to the GC's.
2) We are able to ping the NetBIOS name.
3) Even directly on the exchange server with a client installed, it
gets the
same error
4) The first exchange server has been ripped out and reinstalled
many times
already (my theory is this is the problem)

What I am asking is if anyone ever heard of such a problem and what
you guys
suggest. Thanks!!!

Exchange dilemma

2002-07-01 Thread Bill Beckett

Interesting dilemma here and the answer may be obvious but my brain is
locked. We have a user who's mail is being forwarded to another mailbox
outside of our network. His messages then automatically go to his deleted
items folder. Since these messages are unread, when purging his deleted
items, everyone who has their mail set up for a read receipt gets a message
back that their mail was deleted without being read. These users are feeling
neglected and like red headed step children. How can I best resolve this
issue?

Agreed but we have a need for someone (clerical) to
monitor
this person's
calendar so all messages other than calendar items
 get forwarded

deleted. All calendar items go into their mailbox

person(clerical) here can make appts, etc.

Okay Bill, here's an idea for you. Loose the mailbox rule to
forward email, setup a custom recipient in Exchange admin, set this persons
mailbox properties to send to BOTH the custom recipient mailbox on
Exchange. Messages get delivered to where they want them, meetings get
delivered to where they want them and the whiney redheaded step-children can
take a hike if they get deletes w/o reading on their messages. Give them a

Yes a month has flown by already.

So on the topic of defragmentations, exchange does this nightly because it
is awesome. Got that part. Now if I have 2GB of free space after this
nightly process takes place, that is all white space that exchange uses
before the priv.edb would grow larger? Is this an accurate statement or way
off?

Again, defragmentation happens daily when ese runs. I am assuming
this
person
means don't compact the store. Running eseutil can be a dangerous
thing.
Running
either of the utilities that will change the structure of the store,
can be
a
dangerous thing and should only be done in extreme measures (like if
the IS
wont
start and you don't have a decent-recent backup of the store, or if
you have
a
huge priv.edb file are running out of diskspace and know that
compacting
would
free up a lot of space an have cheap managers who wont spend money
on either
more disk space or another server to offload folks to). As you will
see,
many
folks in here are weary (with good reason) about running eseutil
against the
store. About the only util people tend to run is isinteg just to
check the
integrity of the store. Even if it needs to be fixed, most folks
will just
build
another server and move mailboxes off of the server with a store
that may
have a
lot of errors or is too big for its own good. Bottom line again, is
to only
use
eseutil as a last ditch effort or isinteg -fix if the store is not
accessible.

FWIW - these are the reasons you keep impeccable backups of your
stores and
transaction logs - just like Wilford Brimley says check your blood
sugar and
check it often, exchange admins say check your backups and check
them daily.
Once you have a good base of backups, a couple weeks to a month, you
will
want
to test and document your disaster recovery methods 1) to make sure
it works
and
b) to get it down packed so you can do it in a minimal amount of
time. Also,
I
recommend never letting your stores (mostly the priv.edb) get out of
hand
(getting too big) because it becomes harder to manage it (longer to
back it
up,
longer to restore it, etc.) If it does get too big, either implement
strict
or
more strict mailbox storage policies or simply build another
exchange server
and
move users off of it - if it is e2k, of course, storage groups are a
god
send
for thing like this.

Once you have a good base of backups, a couple weeks to a month, you will
want to test and document your disaster recovery methods 1) to make sure
 it
 works and
 b) to get it down packed so you can do it in a minimal amount of time.
 Also,
I recommend never letting your stores (mostly the priv.edb) get out of
 hand
(getting too big) because it becomes harder to manage it (longer to back
 it
up, longer to restore it, etc.) If it does get too big, either implement
strict or more strict mailbox storage policies or simply build another
exchange server and move users off of it - if it is e2k, of course,
 storage
groups are a god send for thing like this.

Since it is a bright relational database, it runs an online maintenance

RE: SSL problem

2002-06-21 Thread Bill Beckett

The MS Cert will work. I've found people that like to use an outside source
like Verisign because either they don't know how to setup a cert server,
they don't want to or they don't think it is as secure as going outside to
Verisign. I'm no expert but I use our own cert from an IIS 5 certificate
server and it works fine.

SSL in OWA confuses me. Do you need to buy a certificate from
Verisign or just use the certificate server in IIS. Our use of OWA is for
employees to check email OUTSIDE of the company. I don't want them to have
to carry a user cert with them. If the MS certs will work, why buy one form
verisign?

Well I've got OWA access working on regular http, but now I've
encountered a second problem as I try to get SSL working.

I've installed my certificate server and I've requested, processed
and installed the certificate. When I attempt to connect to OWA, I'm getting
the warning boxes about untrusted certificates OK. When I click on yes to
proceed, I get Cannot find server or DNS error. I can still connect using
http, so DNS and networking are OK.

Ideas?

To make this product work, you will need good hardware and lots of memory,

 you
can get hold of one specific person in the San Diego area. it does work
 fine
for exchange 5.5 once you have taken all the precautions etc... but we
 have

RE: Clustering

2002-06-13 Thread Bill Beckett

Yep, that's pretty much the thought here Ken. They use (over use in my
opinion) email for everything and are afraid of not having it. Clustering
sounds good but for us not an option...two reasons, I believe you need the
enterprise version (for exchange 5.5) and you need decent hardware. In our
case that would mean $$$ and they never want to spend $$$ until something
breaks.

I have a similar concern at my agency that Bill seems to have. My
management is deathly afraid of losing our email capability and has asked
 me
to come up with alternatives to provide redundancy. I've never worked
 with
clustering, but I assume the concept is to provide failover capability.
 So,
what is the best way to provide assurance of minimal email downtime (less
than 30 minutes) in the event of a server failure, or is that a pipe dream
if you have a catastrophic failure? Thanks

RE: Exchange 5.5 sending out netbios packets

2002-06-10 Thread Bill Beckett

Holy crap!

This machine is a DC running AD, IIS, Exchange and Proxy? Does anything ever
move through this server?

-Original Message-
From: Steve Jacobson [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]
Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 9:15 AM
To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues
Subject:Exchange 5.5 sending out netbios packets

I have a dual homed server that I am using as a gateway from a small
local area network to the internet. One NIC card goes to the
internal
LAN (the intranet) , the other connects to the internet via a DSL
connection. The server runs Win2K Server (SP2) , Proxy 2.0
(updated),
and Exchange 5.5 (SP4), DNS, AD and IIS . It also is the domain
controller for the network (I know --I know. It saves a machine).
The machine hosts the DNS servers for several domains that are being
hosted. The packet filters are turned on in Proxy, and only a
minimal
number of ports are open. All the latest MS security patches are
on
the machine. There are no other domain controllers on the network.

Anyway, what is happening is that I am getting packet rejects from
port 137 (the Netbios port) coming from the intranet NIC. A sample
of
the packet filter log entries are:

6/6/2002, 1:49:00, 192.168.1.10, 211.109.2.104, Udp, 137, 137, -, 0,
209.42.32.73, -, -,
6/6/2002, 1:49:01, 192.168.1.10, 211.109.2.104, Udp, 137, 137, -, 0,
209.42.32.73, -, -,
6/6/2002, 2:11:27, 192.168.1.10, 211.254.60.122, Udp, 137, 137, -,
0,
209.42.32.73, -, -,
6/6/2002, 2:11:28, 192.168.1.10, 211.254.60.122, Udp, 137, 137, -,
0,
209.42.32.73, -, -,
6/6/2002, 2:30:59, 192.168.1.10, 203.240.154.143, Udp, 137, 137, -,
0,
209.42.32.73, -, -,

192.168.1.10 is the IP address of the intranet NIC, and 209.42.32.73
is the IP address of the internet NIC.

The address 209.42.32.73 is visible from the internet and is the
primary dns server for the domains I am hosting.

I believe that these packets are coming out of Exchange 5.5. The
TO:
address points to Korean spam sites. I get a lot of spam sent to
non-existent mailboxes on my domains, and these end up as NDRs, and
so
I think these packets are the results of this. I would like to stop
them from being sent, but don't have a clue as to where to begin.
The
MS knowledge base isn't any use.

Does anyone out there know what is going on, and how to stop it?
Or
even point me to a place to get started.

Other that this, the server runs fine.

Thanks in advance

Steve Jacobson

Just for grins, I tried to restore a mailbox from a

I made no changes to the server in weeks if not

nothing

In the discussion on server sizing for Exchange 2000 it was
mentioned by several that I should be looking at getting away from using
RAID5 for my OS, the application as well as the log files. Mirroring was
mentioned quite often as how it should be configured. How are people doing
this? In the past, we have tried using mirroring that comes with NT and have
had pretty poor results. Is there some sort of hardware mirroring similar to
the hardware RAID that I am using now?

I do not see us reconfiguring our existing 5.5 servers to
accomplish this but I do want to make sure that I have our 2000 optimally
deployed.

It's possible. You can build the message structure of the IS again.
However, things like permissions, (some) rules etc will go missing.
You'll
have to use another method to restore those.

One might ask how you would arrive at such a situation. Prevention

Like I said. I've seen contracts for a whole
hell of a lot more than that. I think the largest I've seen was $525 an hour
plus expenses. If you were talking salary then 150hr x hours x 52 weeks =
$312,000.00. Add in about 45% for benefits and taxes = $452,400.00 in salary
costs. Not worth that. No offense to Don or anyone else.

What if you had 2 servers, say exchange1 and exchange2, Exchange1 being the

That is correct. If you were to install it as a new ORG/SITE, you
could
script EXMERGE to do copy and replace into the new server, but
nothing that
I am aware of from MS will allow live, real-time replication in the

I had this same issue with the President here, and it ended up as
far as I could tell that when I changed his username to match our new
aliases, it messed up the account. I say as far as I can tell because he
hadn't tried to get into OWA for a couple months after we had it
installed... So, recreating the mailbox, and associating it with his new
username worked.

RE: For Kevin Miller

2002-06-05 Thread Bill Beckett

Jeez, there just is such extreme bias out there. Why can't people just be
objective and look at things the way they really are? Instead we enjoy
lumping a group of people together, then stereotyping. Suffice it to say,
there are MCSE's who know less than non-MCSE's and MCSE's that know more. It
all depends on who you get. If you do your job interviewing the candidate,
shouldn't even be an issue. To say that all MCSE's don't know $hit is
asinine.

Yes, I have met many MCSE's who didn't know their a$$ from a hole in the
ground but I have met several who knew their stuff as well.

Agreed that many MCSEs are paper, and worthless, but cert is still
valuable, especially those in other areas. If you can prove your worth AND
have the title, I think it is worthwhile.

BTW I have an acquaintance who is a lawyer who decided to get his
MCSE. He got it in 6 months, and then tried to get a job. He is still
looking 1.5 years later. I started looking at the same time (I was an MCP at
the time I believe) and was hired within a month. Experience should always
be top priority. I would not hire him to install an OS on a WS, much less
plug in all the color coded wires (because, you know, now they color code
all the keyboard and...oh nevermind.

PS He is a suck a$$ lawyer too

For about 6 months I had the pleasure of working with a MCSE that
didn't know how to install a printer on a windows box! He would format hard
drives, and then asked me where all the users files went, and how did he get
them back? That was when I decided that MCSEs are only good for fooling
clueless CIOs like my boss.

There is one good use for them, and that is comic relief when doing
interviews.

I would ask them What DHCP was. they would respond with Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol, and claim they were experts, and knew
everything about it. I would then ask them very detailed questions, like how
do you configure it to hand out a WINS server address, and what is the scope
in DHCP? It was great fun watching them squirm. Try it sometime.

PS The guy who got the job was the guy who said I don't know to the
most questions, didn't have any certs, and he is working out great.

 Am I right?

And how do you force SSL?

If you are using IIS5, you don't need a cert at all. Just force
SSL
communications.

Do you mean just deselect Basic authenication and select Integrated
Windows Authenication in IIS manager? thanks!

No, it doesn't. In IIS5 you can click a checkbox and force them to
use port 443, and you do not need a cert to do that.

That's the problem, the Edit tab is grayed out unless you have a cert
...without one you cannot edit

RE: Users granting each other access to their inboxes

2002-05-24 Thread Bill Beckett

While we're on the topic, do you have a util that will allow the permissions
to propagate to sub-folders? I hate having to go into each subfolder and
set perms.

 Ivan,

I have two utils that might help you. The first is the report you
describe
-
it allows you to fully report on all permissions on all folders.
The
second
util is one which will allow you to set these permissions from a
central
place (rather than log on to every mailbox and set them), which
may help
you
 reverse the situation.

Subject: Users granting each other access to their inboxes

 Hi,

I work for a School with Exchange 5.5 with Outlook 2000 Clients
and I have
 a problem.
The kids have started using Outlook to grant each other access to
their
inboxes. In some cases, if a kid has stayed logged in by mistake,
someone
else has come along and granted Default Author access - i.e.
everyone else
 can then access it.

What I'd like to know is how to create a report of these inbox
permissions. I can't find anything in Exchange Administrator -
this
provides the Mailbox permissions, not the Inbox permissions. No
one I've
 spoken to seems to know.

So, it's up to you guys - anyone have any ideas?

 Ivan.
