RE: Sending messages to comcast from Exchange
I've had similar problems in the past with domains such as Comcast, AOL and the likes. They are (or were) constantly changing their requirements for accepted mail to limit junk that they receive. Ours was something as simple as improper reverse/ptr settings related to the IP we were sending from. Once that we fixed, they started accepting email from us again. -- Joe Louis From: Eric [mailto:seag...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2012 11:28 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Sending messages to comcast from Exchange We are running Exchange 2007 and have started seeing delay messages from email sent to comcast.nethttp://comcast.net mailboxes. I just went through this with someone here. My explanations were not acceptable so I found and referred her to this link. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/handling-junk-mail-in-outlook-2007-HA010232591.aspx#BMjunk We use spam filtering outside Exchange (why let the junk get to and process the junk, much less archive it), so I encourage users to leave defaults and/or disable Outlook Junk filtering, which is also in that article. I just bought a cert from them and it comes standard with 5 SANs. I may try them when it comes time for my exchange cert to expire. Thanks Doug. Ya, I just included the dashes for formatting in the message to the list. We don't use them when sending. We also use txt.att.net instead of what I typed. RE: E-mail bouncing if user has been deleted then re-added
We had that issue and found that the accounts were linked to the old ID even though nothing showed by the smtp address. Allot of it was cached/autocomplete in Outlook. We just taught users to not choose the autocomplete suggestion and pick their name from the GAL. Once that happened, the next time the user sent an email that re-hire, it linked to the new account. From: John Hornbuckle [mailto:john.hornbuc...@taylor.k12.fl.us] Sent: Thursday, January 28, 2010 11:12 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: E-mail bouncing if user has been deleted then re-added We have users come and go, and sometimes they come back again. When they go, I delete them in AD and in Exchange (2007). If they come back, I recreate them. The problem I've noticed is that e-mail sent to users who have been re-added seems to bounce back to the sender if the sender had previously sent that user a message (before they were deleted and re-added) and the recipient's address is stored in Outlook's .NK2 file. The NK2 file must contain some behind-the-scenes stuff beyond just the obvious e-mail address, because the recipients' addresses aren't changing and yet messages to them are bouncing. And when you pick the recipient's name from Outlook's drop-down list, the message *appears* to be correctly addressed using our standard firstname.lastn...@domainmailto:firstname.lastn...@domain structure. We can work around this by deleting the recipient's name from sender's drop-down list / NK2 file. Then the sender can reach the recipient with no problem, and the recipient's address is added back to the sender's NK2 file and works from that point forward. But what's up with that? RE: DL Creation Requirements/policy
We don't try to control the DLs that users put in Outlook. That's for them to manage as they best see fit. But for Distribution Groups, we set a standard where there should be a minimum membership of the distribution group and a minimum number of users that will use it once created. If one user wants to email 10 users, we're not going to create a DG for that. The rest of the users in the GAL don't need that clutter. But if 10 users will email 10, it makes sense to make the group. As far as names go, I think it's wise to have a convention that is meaningful to the user base. A new user trying to reach the Customer Service Supervisors isn't going to know to find them under Bob's staff. If Bob doesn't like the convention, he can always make a DL in Outlook that is called what he likes and include the Distribution Group from the GAL. Like any shop, it depends on the buy-in. We've been able to make the point and demonstrate the need for a convention. Where we have seen resistance is where the pretty name is CC'd in a public email and the convention just isn't as pretty as Customer Service. I just find it hard to believe that Google will be replacing Exchange at the corporate end. While that may be their goal, they've been saying that for many years. The same holds true for the MS Office cloud model. Where they are making inroads are at a number of public schools, colleges, etc that are using Google email brand (but still buying Office). They are replacing *Nix mail platforms and Netware. Of the ones I can think of, none of them had Exchange. And I'm sure the schools are getting a huge break on it (if not for free). Gmail is great. Thx From: Eric Hanna [mailto:eri...@sunbelt-software.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009 11:15 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Exchange archiving In my experience, the load on the Exchange server tends to depend on how many mailboxes are being journaled, the amount of journaling mailboxes, and how much traffic is being ran through the Exchange server. Based on these factors, I would say you will probably see about a 5-15% increase in utilization (rough estimate but is what I generally see). As for how granular journaling is: Exchange 2003 is set on the store level while Exchange 2007 can be set at the mailbox level. Lastly, my 2pennies worth for the archiving: There are lots of solutions out there for archiving from open source to products like Symantec Vault. Enabling journaling for Exchange archiving is a popular way to go as it ensures capture of inbound and outbound traffic instead of interacting with individual mailboxes. While this gets your compliancy side, it doesn't do anything for your store sizes. Products like SEA (yes, a shameless plug) are able to archive your journaling mailbox (and only keep a copy for the archives) and also archive mailboxes individually. This will get your compliancy side as well as getting your information store reduced. While all solutions serve their function, it really depends on what you want to accomplish while archiving. Are you looking for archiving as a compliancy solution and/or do you want to get your information store sizes down? Re: Exchange archiving
I think that everyone recognizes that exchange may be able to handle it, but that's not the right tool for the job. The difference is considerably more than using a screwdriver as a chisel or a prybar. Especially when you take into accout the rest of the exchange infrastructure, user productivity, operational costs and recovery. Sent from my mobile... On May 6, 2009, at 6:15 PM, Sean Martin seanmarti...@gmail.commailto:seanmarti...@gmail.com wrote: I think I understand William's point... Exchange, especially 2007 and later, is more than capable of handling larges amounts of data. If a company chooses to use Exchange/Outlook as their primary method of sending/storing data, then it's not impossible to design Exchange for that purpose. Depending on the organization, it may require several mailbox servers, smtp gateways, etc, all requiring beafy hardware and a large number of disks, but it could probably be supported. It may require an unimaginable amounf of bandwidth, but it could probably be supported. You may be limited in terms of backup/recovery, or your chosen solutions may be much more expensive as a result of your design, but it again, Exchange could probably handle it just fine. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather my users save all file attachments out to a managed file server and let Exchange handle what it was originally designed for. It all boils down to what fits the business' requirements the best. I personally would warn against this type of utilization with Exchange, but after I point out all the flaws and limitations I can find and they still demand a solution, I'll make sure they know exactly what will be required to support the design and how much it will cost. - Sean On Wed, May 6, 2009 at 11:43 AM, Maglinger, Paul mailto:pmaglin...@scvl.compmaglin...@scvl.commailto:pmaglin...@scvl.com wrote: So you're trading a filing cabinet for a trash compactor... E2k7: User rename question
So, I have user that was recently married. We renamed her account in ADUC. We added the new smtp using EMS and also changed the alias. Things have been great until she reported that her Blackberry has stopped receiving emails. Doh. We forgot to change her name there as it was pointing to the old name. Here is my question, realizing the limitations of ADUC, am I just creating problems for myself by using that for renaming accounts? If it wasn't for a BB user, we wouldn't have noticed that the CN didn't change on the rename operation. ~ Ninja Email Security with Cloudmark Spam Engine Gets Image Spam ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Ninja~

We change the user name to keep everything in line. RE: E2k7: Logs not truncating
Just verified. No roll-up 4. This appears to be a problem with the backup of one store. The backup job has been doing all stores and apparently when one fails, the commit on all of them fail. I have run backups on most of them individually. Those are truncating now. I am doing the large one as I type this. RE: Blackberry, or something else?
I have both BBs and Windows Mobiles out there. Once you get over the idea and get the BES set up (I did it kicking and screaming), the BB that is out in the field is incredibly easy to enroll. And saying that doesn't do it justice. It is much easier that any way I know to remotely enroll a Windows mobile device; especially one that belongs to someone else other than the company. I prefer Windows-Devices/Exchange though. It sure makes reading word/excel attachments much easier (yes I know you can _BUY_ a separate reader for some Office documents on a BB. We just rolled out a few more BBs for our service folk in a test. I see them becoming more prevalent. I made the pitch again after our copier tech came out and closed his ticket from here through his BB. Are any of you folks using BBs doing any customizations for integration with your apps/processes? Microsoft also has a new product, Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager, that enables even more policy controls. I've not run across anyone using it yet, though - but the first service pack/feature pack is due out soon. The more advanced controls do require a Windows Mobile 6.x OS. You can't specifically control what devices can connect, but you can (in all versions 2003 SP2 and later) refuse connections to devices that don't implement all of your security policies. For basic password/PIN/wipe security policies, you'll be pretty happy. You can also disable Exchange Activesync, per-user. In the last month, 3 other staff members requested use of BB and we didn't even install the BB redirector software on their workstations. We told them to just use OWA. Maybe it will help some of you if you have to go down the same road as us in the future. Our old server was Exchange 2003 on a Server 2003 32-bit box. A bit over 500 mailboxes, around 40 GB of mail. New server is Exchange 2007 on Server 2008 64-bit Hyper-V VM. We have two VMs--one for Edge and one for Hub Transport, Client Access, and Mailbox. Both are on the same physical machine. For the most part, things worked well--creating the new servers and migrating the mailboxes went smoothly. We ran into a couple of little bumps in the road that had me pulling my hair out after that, but things could've been much worse. The engineers (from an outside company) that worked with me on the move were pretty knowledgeable, although Hyper-V was a bit new to them and one of them was much more knowledgeable about Exchange 2003 than 2007. They did have to engage Microsoft engineers at one stage, and between MS, the outside engineers, and me there were times when there were half a dozen of us on a conference call working on problems at one time. Exchange 2007 seems to work fine in a Hyper-V VM. Granted, we're a smallish organization and we've been running it for less than a week, but still--things look fine. Some gotchas we came across: * A number of our users aren't configured in ADUC to inherit permissions (which apparently users normally would be). For some, this created an issue where they couldn't log into OWA. For others, it created no problems whatsoever. * We had to configure Outlook Anywhere to use plain text instead of NTLM (although we're using SSL, so plain text is still secure). Although NTLM is the preferred method per MS, for some reason when we had it selected our users were being repeatedly prompted to enter their credentials in Outlook--but it would never accept them and would keep asking over and over again. What's even weirder is that this was happening ON OUR NETWORK, where Outlook Anywhere really shouldn't be in use. This confused MS, the outside engineers, and me. This problem--which also prevented Free/Busy and the Out of Office Assistant from working--only affected Outlook 2007 clients, not 2003. * Outlook redirected itself to the new server fine for most of my users, but for around 10% - 15 % it didn't. For them, we've had to delete and recreate their Outlook profile on their machine. Not a hard fix, but kind of a pain to run around and do. We have not determined a pattern as to which machines redirected and which didn't. It appears to affect both Outlook 2007 on Vista and 2003 on XP. * Having to use the Exchange Management Console to do things you used to be able to do directly in Active Directory Users Computers is a pain and just plain stupid. I don't know what Microsoft was thinking there. * The Exchange Management Shell is great, although there are some tasks that have to be done there that I think would be easier from a GUI. * It seems weird to me that the purpose of the Edge server role is to protect your other servers/roles from the Internet, yet OWA, ActiveSync, etc. don't run at the Edge level. So your CA/Mailbox/Hub servers still have to be exposed to the outside, even if you have an Edge server. Mailbox recovery
I have a relatively new E2k7 server. This morning, someone deleted the OU that contained several users. We reactivated them with ldp (of course they came back w/o groups). We then had a problem reconnecting the mailboxes since they didn't show as in Disconnected Mailbox or the cmdlet. Running the Clean-MailboxDatabse cmdlet populated the Disconnected Mailbox item. From there, we right clicked on the mailbox, picked the user, and let the wizard run, which said it completed. The user still can't connect to the mailbox and is getting a error that says his profile is not configured, with the name of the server in parentheses. I'm stumped here. Any ideas? This is all in the same domain/forest. Joe Louis ~ Ninja Email Security with Cloudmark Spam Engine Gets Image Spam ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Ninja~
