Re: [expert] Mandrake Auto-Install replication
Okay, It seems that perhaps I didn't explain the situation in enough detail. I have a VA Linux Full-On 2500 with the following configuration: Mylex AcelleRAID 150 4 - 9.1GB SCSI SCA Hard Disks in a RAID 5 array handled by the Mylex BIOS 24x CD-ROM 3.5" Floppy Drive I went through the Mandrake install and when prompted I generated and auto-install floppy. I booted the machine, and it booted fine. I placed the auto-install floppy back into the machine and rebooted from it. The install seems to go off without a hitch (no error messages). When I go to reboot the next time is when I get the LI prompt instead of LILO:. This obviously isn't a BIOS setting, although that was a good thought with the information at hand. This obviously isn't something I can use GRUB to fix, because GRUB won't boot a RAID array (although again a good thought with the information at hand). It seems to me that the Auto-install doesn't correctly install LILO, and I am wanting to know if this can be fixed without me having to use another distribution? Actually - YES! I just recently installed the > reiser-utils rpm from Mandrake on my Mandrake 7.1-7.2 > hybrid system. Is there anything else required before I > go and reformat my / and /usr mounts? Okay, I've finally caught up reading all of the mails. First, to answer your question from your last mail, reiser-utils rpm contains utilities to administer/maintain you fs, like mkreiserfs, and whatever the reiserfs checking utility is. You will have to enable reiserfs within your kernel. If you are using Mandrake's kernels, you should be fine. If you are downloading a vanilla(standard) kernel source, you will need to download the reiserfs kernel patches from reiserfs website. Now, my own experience with reiserfs AND ext3fs. Both needs kernel patching to be used, but you can only patch one or the other. Reiserfs is *fast* which is what I like about it. Much faster, but it does have higher cpu load. One downfall that applies our company, is that reiserfs will fail horribly when used with NFSD v3. NFSD v3 is needed in many of our cases, and preferred over v2(which has no checksumming, which can lead to corruption). So if you need to maintain a high volume nfs server, might want to reconsider before diving in. My roommate uses reiserfs on his company's webserver(www.rottentomates.com - great site if you are a movie fanatic), and hasn't complained yet. But he's not using NFS. Ext3 is nice in that you can easily convert a ext2 filesystem to ext3 and back if you decide you don't want it. One of our big clients uses ext3 on their servers with NFSv3 and large file system. It seems to be serving them very well. But it's nowhere as fast as reiserfs. So reiserfs has the speed advantage, with a bit more risk than ext3. Now, there's another issue to consider since you want "production" servers. Both of these filesystems, under high i/o load has been known to corrupt files. Don't exactly know how much, but I'm assuming enough to make some steer clear away from them. If your server won't have high i/o load, this shouldn't be your concern. But if you will face high load, ext2 may well be a better option. I'm not voting for either of the two until I get around to testing JFS. Re: [expert] LM 7.2 & DHCP stability . . .
Usually I've discovered this kind of symptom is attributed to logging issues where a daemon is trying to discover the name of the IP address of the machine requesting the service. By creating authoritive DNS zone files for your network or simply entering names for each of the IP addresses which will be used in /etc/hosts can go a long way towards making your machine function when it's not connected to the Internet. There's much more to be said about the various types of name services & their configurations. The odd thing about all this is that usually, the IP addresses for which name service lookups are being performed are IP addresses inside your private network and there usually is no official name for it's ip address. Your machine tries to query the DNS servers on the outside world and they simply say there's no record for it, the lookup fails and only the numeric representation of the IP address gets logged. -Joe Baker Digital Communications Research, Inc. www.dcresearch.com www.dcresearch.com/joebaker www.dcresearch.com/resume.html 414-427-6140 On Wed, 22 Nov 2000, Robert Fox wrote: > I have LM 7.2 on one machine using a realtek 8139 10/100 Ethernet card, > the DHCP host is (unfortunately) a Win2K machine with a 3Com 3C905 > 10/100 card using network sharing . . . > > When the Linux box fires up - it finds it's address no problem - and > continues happily along in the boot process. The wonderful thing about SCSI is that it significantly reduces CPU load, making your system as a whole much faster. > Thanks for the tidbits, you may not think it much, but I've been steadily > jotting down all the little handy commands I've seen on here for the past > two weeks or so. What you're seeing is the result of inetd in action. If you go to the console of your box regardless of whether it Mandrake (Yeah!! Bravo!), RedHat (OK, pretty good too.) or just about any other flavor of modern Unix-like system (Well, at least better than Windows.) and run ps or top to check the process list you'll note that the telnet daemon isn't running (assuming no is connected over the net.) Now, when you try to connect to the telnet port the request is caught, looked up, and then a telnet daemon is spawned to handle it. You can make it a lot faster if you remove telnet from the control of inetd and just insert a line in your rc.local to start a daemon always loaded at boot. But this consumes memory. Examine your /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/services, and /etc/protocols files and the inetd and tcpd man pages to find out how this works. Use less instead of an editor to be safe when looking at the files. If you've got plenty of resources and the small delay is frustrating then change it. If you're already running out of memory then leave it like it is. Otherwise, just stick to the > old ext2 and be happy. Hmm, I'd rather say it the other way around. Granted, I haven't tested it on a heavily loaded production system (because I don't have access to such a system), but I would try it even there. Simply the reason that it is a journaling system would be a good enough reason for *ME*. Plus there's a speed advantage, and that I haven't had any problems with reiserfs in the last, hmm? year?, or so that I use reiserfs exclusively (well, about at least. I still have a 100meg ext2 boot partition). What exactly are the reasons that you would not trust reiserfs for a production system? Do you know of any scenarios where reiserfs always fails? I know that there are some issues with NFS on a reiserfs fs, and I know that there are some troubles with kernel software raid. Anything else? There are a number of these, and I don't really know the difference. The most recent ones I've bought personally are 3C905B/TX(something) and they work great. I've got a few old 3C905B(nothings) that are so hosed I can't get them work properly with Windows but they'll work with DOS. Don't know if there was ever a 3c905(nothing). After my bad experience with the old ones I swore off 3com until recently. To be honest, I think what got wrong with 3com in the windows world was that 3com bought Palm, which put them in competition with MS, so the drivers mysteriously got mangled. Question, are you editing this in the XF86Config file, or the XF86Config-4 file? I spent about 3 days trying to get my scroll button on my mouse to work, editing the XF86Config file, only to discover, in a frenzy of anguish, that it actually uses the XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11 Others might have known this, but no one ever told me about it. [expert] Mandrake Auto-Install replication
All, I am trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.2 from the auto-install floppy for replication. It is actually the same machine that initially installed from, and I reboot and attempt the automated install. The auto-install appears to run through smoothly. When I reboot is when the problem appears. The lilo prompt is just "LI". I refered to the LILO docs and their explanation of this error is as follows: "The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot loader, but has failed to execute it. The can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer." The geometry mismatch doesn't seem to fit, because it is the exact same machine with the exact same partitions. The second sounds more reasonable in that perhaps the Mandrake installation application is forgetting to run the map installer or is not installing the /boot/boot.b file. Any recommendations as to how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -- Deven Phillips, CISSP Information Security Officer Viata Online, Inc. Re: [expert] ext3, reiserfs, and MDK 7.x?
I also run a 100% pure ReiserFS system on one large 25gig partition with LM 7.2 for over 3 months now and haven't had even 1 single little problem...EVER. This is a truly awesome FS, although I have been wondering why some of my apps appear to freeze up sometimes for a couple of seconds and then return to normal and the disk seems to suddenly go insane with activity during the oddest times. I read that the only two real drawbacks are exactly what I am experiencing with ReiserFS, and they will be addressed shortly but are absolutely nothing to worry about. I would explain further, but the ReiserFS homepage, which I do not have handy, explains everything beautifully. Good Luck and Have Fun. I Love ReiserFS. It is really cool. I fell in love with journaled FS's after experiencing BeOS. It still has one of the best journaled FS's I have ever seen. I can print... the question is that I print at 200% of the size of the document. I have tried to configure the lpoptions, configure with kups, with localhost:631, nothing of nothing. Re: [expert] Glibc_2.2
Sorry. When I read your message it was not clear that you were using the cooker code and not the 7.2 release code. And the way it was worded, it sounded to me like a newbie asking a really really dumb question. glibc in mandrake 7.2 is 2.1.3 not 2.2 so if you're messing with the development software and asking a question like something is wrong with mandrake, then I think that you have your head stuck in a dark place. if you use 2.2 then you want to be asking questions with the preface that you are using the development stuff which is an entirely different ballgame. The development side is a swirl of trying a lot of things and when they do not work, you have to look for a while and understand how it works, and NOT accuse someone else of doing something wrong. My apologies and next time make certain you qualify that you are looking at development stuff and that you're frustrated that you cannot figure it out and need some help. Sharing what I know here is something that I love to do and it helps me learn. Mistakes are part of it. Its also humbling to realize that I've been on the planet using and programming computers for well over 30 years and that what I know seems to diminish with time even though I am learning new stuff at an extraordinary rate. I have no room for arrogance and no tolerance for it. [expert] mode lines
That cute little mode line configurator -- does it work only with the 3.3.6 version of XFree86, or does it work with the 4.0 version as well? running either version, the extra mode lines didn't seem to make a difference. Occasionally I got a menu saying that the extra resolutions were there, but they weren't really. The highest resolution was a 1280x1024, which I use. I've fooled with the registers of older video cards before and remember that there are often locking bits or registers that prevent the user from using anything but the garden variety screen resolutions. The card is an NVIDIA RIVA TNT, just an old generic version with 16megs of memory. Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

I am connecting my Linux Mandrake 7.1 server (2.2.17 kernel) to a Windoze NT PPTP Server. Re: [expert] Problem with the print quality in 7.2
To do not lock out yourself out of your machine do the following: 0. Make sure that you do not have any hard disk partition which is nearly full with df -k Espcially the partitions containing /tmp, /etc, and /var should not be full. 1. Download the newest version of cups, cups-drivers, and ghostscript from http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/ 2. Uninstall the current CUPS version: rpm -e --nodeps cups cups-drivers ghostscript 3. Remove the CUPS configuration and spool directories rm -rf /etc/cups/ rm -rf /var/*/cups/ rm -rf /usr/*/cups/ 4. Install the freshly downloaded CUPS-related packages with rpm -Uvh cups*i586.rpm ghost*i586.rpm 5. Disable automatic loading of CUPS at boot time using chkconfig --del cups So you can simply reboot your machine when it crashes in one of the following steps. 6. Start the CUPS daemon with service cups start 7. Try to install your printer again using printerdrake. Choose the driver which you have chosen the last time. Print the test page when you are asked for. 8. Do print jobs as you do them usually. 9. Log out and log in again. 10. Do more print jobs. 11. Log out and reboot. 12. Log in and start CUPS with service cups start 13. Repeat the steps 8. to 10. 14. If your computer didn't crash, you can make CUPS starting automatically by chkconfig --add cups 15. Reboot to do the final check. If the computer crashed in one of the steps, tell me in which step. Reboot, but do not start CUPS when you have rebooted. Tell me which printer driver you have chosen and send me: /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd, /etc/cups/printers.conf, /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. Try LPD by doing the following steps: 0. Do the check of the hard disk space again, tell me the results. 1. Uninstall CUPS with rpm -e --nodeps cups cups-drivers 2. Install LPD with urpmi lpr rhs-printfilters 3. Turn off automatic startup of LPD by: chkconfig --del lpd 4. Start LPD with service lpd start 5. Configure your printer with printerdrake -lpr 6. Do print jobs as you do them usually. 7. Log out and log in again. 8. Do more print jobs. 9. Log out and reboot. 10. Log in and start LPD with service lpd start 11. Repeat the steps 6. to 8. 12. If your computer didn't crash, you can make LPD starting automatically by chkconfig --add lpd 15. Reboot to do the final check. If your computer crashed, tell me which driver you used this time. Send me /etc/printcap and all files in /var/spool/lpd//. If the computer crashed in both cases, ther must be any problem with the support of your USB port (motherboard chipset) with Linux. Then I will inform our kernel people to check your problem. I have an HP DeskJet 840C connected to the USB port and it works without any problems. Someone has to > come up with an os that's as friendly as windoze, with all the perks of > linux :) Maybe linux is not for you - you give up too easily ;-) I have my share of h/w headaches, and personally I have little time for the GUI based configuration tools, which work except every time you need them. I don't know how to hack the files byt hand yet (I'm not one of these matchstick chewing console freaks who use emacs to fry eggs :), but I am aware that there is a predictability about linux, and regard it as a crash free environment. I had this proved when I tried a reinstall (I had a laptop running SuSE and it was bellyaching about a bug in the dynamic linker) ten minutes before my son decided to go on the Internet. I found him with two Netscape browser windows, a download, and irc going (On a 33.6 pcmcia modem) while the reinstall was running on a pcmcia cdrom! Try that in Windoze! I checked up afterward, to find that 149 of 153 packages were installed successfully, and the cdrom had a read fault - pretty good I thought. It sounds like you have a couple of problems. Have you run any of the process monitors? Have you waited? linux is sometimes slower to respond to an interrupt under load. Keep banging things and you'll drown it in useless interrupts. Have you enough ram and enough swap? What's your usb configuration? Are you starting 50 unnecessary daemons? Read any HOWTOs? When you get past the bilge (Scope of document, what it does not cover, why it was written, biographies of anyone whoever corrected a spelling in it, what HOWTOs you really should be reading, etc) they have some useful information. -- Regards, Declan Moriarty Applied Researches - Ireland's Foremost Electronic Hardware Genius A Slightly Serious(TM) Company Don't you get browned off with stupid quotes on the bottom of sig files? RE: [expert] How to enable telnet in 7.2?
Check the file /etc/hosts.allow It should have an entry like in.telnetd:10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0 127.0.0.1 or if you want to be able to telnet in from anywhere... in.telnetd:ALL the file inetd.conf was used before, but it appears that in 7.2 Mandrake has moved to an Inet super daemon with a better reputation for security named xinetd. You'll find the configuration files in /etc/xinet.d/ There is a configuration file for each service. xinetd gives you many more configuration options than did inetd. You shouldn't have to edit these files. I'd bet that you specifically need to allow the service in hosts.allow. Also make sure that xinetd is running by executing the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart If this command reports failure of stopping the xinetd daemon, that likely means that it wasn't running from boot. To make sure that xinetd starts on boot in the future, run the command /usr/sbin/ntsysv Put a star in front ot the ntsysv daemon to enable it's execution upon booting. The workaround is to ifconfig down, then ifconfig up the appropriate NIC. -- -- C^2 No windows were crashed in the making of this email. Re: [expert] New (server) install of LM 7.2
Is this a new install or are you trying to upgrade a new install? My install went off without a hitch with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. It should be all there and working when you install. You are trying to setup Nuke right? Should work no probs on the development install. I believe the packages you need are mm, apache and apache-common and php in that order. Then add MySQL and mods. So font extensions of Mandrake you only see with the Foomatic stuff. The big advantage of the CUPS driver is the easy colour calibration with "calibrate-gimpprint", so it's better for photos and graphics. The GhostScript driver has a lot of adjustments (look into the options which xpp or qtcups displays for a printer/queue configured with "Foomatic"). It is much more difficult to to do a full calibration, but you can send some slight adjustments along with an individual job. In addition you have the additional fonts and so this solution is better for formatted text documents. > On a better note, i'm about to upload K-Epson Tools onto cooker, if anyone > wants the binary rpm, you can get it .. > http://www.tecpronet.com/linux/kepsontools-0.1.2-1mdk.i586.rpm > > source at > http://www.tecpronet.com/linux/kepsontools-0.1.2-1mdk.src.rpm > I will try it later. [expert] CUPS problems under Mdk7.2
Hi, I'm having some problems getting CUPS working with Mdk7.2 (download edition). On install CUPS found my Canon BJC-210SP fine, but the test page didn't print out properly - looked to me like the test page was a postscript file which the printer didn't like. I thought this was something I could probably fix later, so I let it go. After install however, the CUPS daemon won't even run, which means none of the config tools work, and I'm not sure where to go about fixing it. Trying to start the CUPS daemon with 'service cups start' seems to start it - I get no error messages - but it dies almost immediately. Each time I try to start the daemon I get this in /var/log/cups/error_log: I [22/Nov/2000:23:34:43 +1000] Listening to 0:631 I [22/Nov/2000:23:34:43 +1000] ReadConfiguration() Configured for up to 100 clients. I [22/Nov/2000:23:34:53 +1000] LoadPPDs: Wrote //etc/cups/ppds.dat (1220 PPDs)... E [22/Nov/2000:23:34:53 +1000] PID 6331 stopped with status 1! You can see how fast it dies. Can anybody tell me what 'status 1' is? Can't seem to find any mention of it in any docs. Trying to print, the print job seems to vanish, doesn't show up in /var/spool/cups at all, and both 'lpq' and 'lpq-cups' show nothing. 'lpq-lpd' gives me: Bad termcap entry lpq-lpd: lp: unknown printer Yes I have the lpd stuff installed, but not running, I installed it in case CUPS didn't work, but now I can't seem to get it working either because CUPS takes over all printing. Is there a conflict in having both lpd and CUPS installed, even if they aren't both running? I've setup postfix, fetchmail, recompiled the kernel, and run the Bastille scripts on this machine. Don't know if that's relevant, but other than that it's plain Mdk7.2. Also, this printer was being shared with a Win95 machine via Samba under Mdk7.1 - the printer connected to the Linux box. Pretty much just copied my old Samba config files into Mdk7.2. Now the Win95 machine seems to be able to send print jobs to the Linux box, but they get stuck there without going to the printer. In /var/spool/cups I get the file '', which is a print job from the Win95 machine - 'strings ' gives me 'Untitled - Notepad' (no prizes for guessing what I was trying to print from Win95 :-) I assume this is because the CUPS daemon isn't running, so can't process it. Any ideas on how to get CUPS working? Failing that, how do I get lpd working? Thanks, Tom Massey Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

Why don't you try to choose "Remote LPD" in the printer configuration tool? Then you will be asked for the IP of the server (do ifconfig on the server and look for the IP at the entry of your ethernet card) and for the printer queue ("lp" in most cases, see the printer's entry in the /etc/printcap on the server) and you will be able to access to the printers. [expert] LM 7.2 & DHCP stability . . .
I have LM 7.2 on one machine using a realtek 8139 10/100 Ethernet card, the DHCP host is (unfortunately) a Win2K machine with a 3Com 3C905 10/100 card using network sharing . . . When the Linux box fires up - it finds it's address no problem - and continues happily along in the boot process. When I shutdown the DHCP host, or just disconnect the ISDN internet access from the host machine . . . the Linux box seems to hang - mouse movement works, but keyboard non-responsive and nothing opens or closes . . . can't even bring up a virtual console! When I allow the Win2K host back on the Internet - the Linux box "wakes up" and continues on like nothing happened!?!?!? What is the rule of thumb about DHCP hosts, timeouts and where can I tweak these parameters if any? Many thanks in advance . . . [expert] I fixed it!- was: serious boot problem with 7.2
Thank's all for your concern: Chris Spencer, Civileme, Rune Kallhovd and others which names I've lost. This seems to have been the problem: I noticed one thing different in the Mandrake fstab file (I can access the LM files from SuSE) compared to the SuSE fstab, in Drake I read: /dev/hda8 / ext2 noauto, user,rw 1 1 which looked a bit weird to me, in SuSE it's: /dev/hda5 / ext2 defaults 1 1 I changed the file in LM and tryed to boot; VOILA! all of a sudden it worked! Now the question is: if this was the entire problem, how come a fresh Mandrake 7.2 install is configures itself in that way? 'noauto, user,rw' for the root partition in fsab is totally illogical, no wonder the whole system flips out on people when this happens. I am evaluating the Mandrake 7.2 dist to eventually use it as education material in a course for Linux newbies, where I will teach them to install and configure a Linux OS. So, if this is an isolated problem only on 'some' of the CD's distributed and not all, I would like to know. Mandrake development has moved on to glibc 2.2 and gcc 2.96, and as such anything being currently packaged specifically for Mandrake will require glibc 2.2. The solution for me has been to download .src.rpms and rpm --rebuild them on my box. While this does entail compiling, it will also keep your box all RPM as you stated was your desire. glibc 2.2 is available on the Cooker mirrors, but it is in a state of flux atm, and I wouldn't suggest upgrading it for at least a week. I believe there is also a compat RPM that contains the glibc 2.1 libraries. -- Anton GrahamGPG ID: 0x18F78541 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> RSA key available upon request Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work. -- Flaubert Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

This seems to be because the ifup scripts don't get run until you actually activate the interface. Dear Tom Berkley, So, what you are saying is that because I asked a question that has been plaguing more than just myself, and it isn't any less intelligent than hundreds of the other posts I see on this newsgroup, you have to act like a total as*hole to me? What's the deal. The answer I was looking for was very simple. So was my question. As a matter of fact I have been using Linux since ~1994 and RedHat's Mother's Day release was out. This my first time with LM and I have noticed that LM doesn't do everything the same as everybody else and I was just asking for a simple . Please do not ever act this way again. It is exactly people like you who will make sure Linux stays just as it is now, an OS with a lot of as*hole zealots and a bunch of people who whole-heartily gave Linux an honest try...to only get answers like the one you gave. Sure, there is a Newbie List, but what the hell would a newbie be asking a question about Glibc_2.2 compatibility and upgrading for anyways? I just asked some simple, straightforward questions and just wanted some nice, light hearted, direct to the point answers. Thank You Ryan La Mothe > What the h are you talking about? Re: [expert] 7.2 Sound problems
Be Happy I have Creative 128PCI and basically it have worked,as it's working now in LM2BUT without MIDI. I remember i had difficulties with midi in LM7.0 also, but in LM7.1 everything worked ok.So something wrong with 7.2 must be seen similar messages here earlier (about midi),not seen any helpful answer. Is it so,that everytime you update your distro you'd have bunch of replacement hw,in case some modell does not work, thus it have worked earlier?...JUST KIDDING! But as said I have some sounds working...hope somebody finds solution for midis.I have not so much skill,to find what's wrong. jarmo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.
[expert] ppp-on-demand
Hello, Who knows how to configure on demand pppd with network sharing and firewall capabilities? I used this link http://www.nic.com/~cannon/Linux/ 1. I configured my modem. 2. included /etc/modules.conf alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate 3. Configured my connection with linuxconf#works fine 4. Modified /etc/ppp/options: demand idle 60 ipcp-accept-remote ipcp-accept-local lock noauth defaultroute modem 112000 crtscts connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0' 5. Configured /etc/ppp/masq (Yes I see that is for kernel 2.0 but with MDK-7.2 it works also) #!/bin/sh # /etc/ppp/masq -- start/stop IP masquerade services (2.0 kernels) NAME=$0 case "$1" in start) echo -n "Starting IP Masquerade support... " # flush current settings: /sbin/ipfwadm -O -f /sbin/ipfwadm -I -f /sbin/ipfwadm -F -f # default policy is "deny" /sbin/ipfwadm -F -p deny # block Windows housekeeping traffic from triggering autodial etc: /sbin/ipfwadm -F -a deny -P tcp -S 0.0.0.0/0 137:139 /sbin/ipfwadm -F -a deny -P udp -S 0.0.0.0/0 137:139 # provide masquerade services for the local machines - fix these addresses # to match your LAN and be sure to include the Linux machine itself! /sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 10.254.254.25 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -P all /sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 10.254.254.39 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -P all /sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 10.254.254.34 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -P all # install these modules if you have a need for them... # /sbin/insmod ip_masq_cuseeme /sbin/insmod ip_masq_ftp # /sbin/insmod ip_masq_irc # /sbin/insmod ip_masq_quake # /sbin/insmod ip_masq_raudio # /sbin/insmod ip_masq_vdolive echo "Done." ;; stop) echo -n "Stopping IP masquerade..." #/sbin/rmmod ip_masq_cuseeme /sbin/rmmod ip_masq_ftp #/sbin/rmmod ip_masq_irc #/sbin/rmmod ip_masq_quake #/sbin/rmmod ip_masq_raudio #/sbin/rmmod ip_masq_vdolive /sbin/ipfwadm -F -f echo "Done." ;; *) echo "Usage: /etc/ppp/$NAME {start|stop}" exit 1 ;; esac exit 0 6. ppp0 starts on-boot, and ppp0 is default route. Starting ppp0 it hangs & exits with error mesage: "Bringing up interface ppp0: Failed to activate ppp0, retrying in the background" 7. i start my "/etc/ppp/masq start" 8. i start "pppd :10.0.0.2"(And here it hangs and doesn't gives me back prompt, is it ok?) 9. It works! ppp-on-demand Now who can point me to the right address, to configure normally ppp-on-demand with MDK-7.2 using all new features. [expert] 7.2 Sound problems
Hello again, Well, after the night I'm coming back with good new and many questions : 1. I was wrong - there _was_ actually something wrong in the parazmeters I tried in Harddrake, I retrieved them from my windows system config dump and I was able to hear the tests sound (2). The problem was Harddrake stopped again with another message of this time '/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/olp3.o : init_module 'device or ressource busy' So even if I had heard the sound I think Hardrake did nothing and I still had no sound after exiting. 2. I decided that I should look into modules.conf a bit closer and found _nothing_ about sound. No wonder it didn't work. So I just added : alias snd sb options snd + the parameter I had got through w Then sound works quite nice. 3. I still get in /var/log/messages echos of problems of type : Modprobe : could'nt find module sound-slot-1 id w/ sound-service-1-0 I understood reading the ALSA HOWTO (I installed Alsa RPMS) that it must be something trying to access alsa drivers when noone is loaded and I am still using OSS sound driver. 4.Anyway something must have gone wrong with my 7.2 install... isn't it supposed d to install properly the sound drivers during install ? As for using sound (OSS and Alsa) am I supposed to edit the modules-conf by hand or is there something else to do ? Why does someting try to acces this unloaded alsa drivers if the install doesn't install them ? What does the sound daemon do exactly ? it starts OK when booting and where are the parameters? Thanks to anyone who may have answers to this (I suppose there must well be some in the Mandrake staff) ;) Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.
