OK, it depends on the program to display it properly, but the thing is, at

t,

actually I saw two version of that regex yesterday. One had the regex
enclosed in "" as you've suggested, and another did not. Strange thing
is that when i took the double quotes out the warnings evaporated from
syslog. as far as I can tell now they're working I think. It's hard
to say cause as of midnight last night i hadn't gotten anything from
either of the Mandrake lists and my posts there aren't showing up.

I'm at work at moment and I'm still not sure of the posts are showing
up. I sent one earlier to test the list, and haven't seen it yet. So,
I'm not even sure this one is going to get there.

First off, cant you turn of HTML multi part emails? that's not good
netetiquette

Oh dear! that's all I can say, the amount of emails I sent to tyan about
this motherboard is ridiculous! and they still have not fixed it it
seems. I have the same cpus as you as well

Did they fix that annoying "feature" in the bios display of CPU
temperature display that only updates when you press the arrow keys?
(this would not be so bad, but the default value is 75C! argh!)

I got 1.02 with mine, upgraded it to 1.03 from their site. Adaptec SCSI
did not work, neither did my IDE cdrom, finally installed with all scsi
HD and CDROM.

type "hdparm /dev/hda" you can toggle some stuff in that. When i tried I
got the same as you did, check the kernel archives there is someone else
who had this problem, he partially fixed it but the HD was running so
slow it might be better to get a scsi card like I did.

well, all I can say is good luck!

RE: [expert] ifup ppp0

2001-12-17 Thread Franki

yup, its a pain, and it was really bad for me at one stage because I added
wvdial to rc.local to get it to dial on boot.

that was bad because I had to boot to the rescue disk and re-edit rc.local
and add & to the end..

without it, the server just sat there, I couldn't get a console, and it
wouldn't finish setting up, even ALT-F1 to F5 wouldn't get me to the
console.. so I always add the & now,, the best lesson is a nasty one, that
way you don't ever make the mistake again.

wvdial is an excellent program though, if it was expanded abit, ie so users
could initiate it without sudo, and you could set some parameters without
using it in chat mode, and it brought up all ppp interfaces when it
connectedit would be a fantastic program,, I hope development hasn't
stopped on it.

are you sure the redhat box wasnt already set su'd?

The part of the message, where you quote someone, and it says "So-and-so
writes:" (or words along those lines). That's the attribute line. You're
attributing what you're quoting to who said it.

Again, that's a choice you should make as far as the Orbz lookups. There
are those who don't like the policies of the person who used to run it.
You should look into them and see if you are comfortable with rejecting
mail based on their recommendations. I don't have a problem with them
(especially since MAPS went commercial and now wants you to pay in order to
do a DNS lookup against their servers), but you might. As I said, check
orbd.org and orbz.org websites, look things over, and then decide.

But yea, not having to grow your header_checks *is* a good thing. :-)

[expert] LM8.1 Apache & Frontpage success, but...

2001-12-17 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Ok, please don't throw stones because I know about the security
problems...

I do need the extensions however...

I been able to use the Mandrake 8.1 Source RPM's to build a new Apache
server.

I built it directly from the SPEC files and sources included in the
SRC.RPM...

(RPM is wonderful in this regard!)

I used RPM to unpack the sources and perform a prep, without a build. I
then applied the patch buried in the mod_frontpage-xxx binaries (or
source) to the Apache source tree directly to the Mandrake/RPM patched
(but not complied) sources.

I get a good compilation and creation of a "Mandrake" Apache w/FrontPage
server via RPM again..

I have even been able to modify the SPECS to automatically apply the
MOD_Frontpage patches and create both .SRC.RPM and .i686.RPM files
specific to Mandrake 8.1.

The problem is that in spite of everything compiling perfectly, it
segfaults complaining about the SUEXEC program it uses.

Has ANYONE gotten it to work yet... Using the Mandrake source trees?

Thanks

And a small amount of investigation on your part would have shown the following.
The motherboard is only about 18months old and 9 months out of production. The
motherboard is rated to hold 768 megs of Ram. 393 is less than 768. I used this
same model motherboard with 768 megs of ram and 4 nics to set a (then) record with
MindCraft for connections per second for a web server. (previous company) Third.
and most important. It doesn't use a VIA chipset. Which if you listend to Civilme
you would know is nothing but a headache for most people. It uses the ALI chipset.
Finally benchmarks on this mobo cpu combo show that it exceeds CPU's up to 100mhz
faster on integer math and holds it's own with comperable CPU's on floating point
math. (granted I ran the Benchmarks about 18 months ago and it would be a bitch to
find them.)

Re: [expert] SRC.RPM rebuild error

2001-12-17 Thread Michael Viron

I've seen this quite a bit when trying to rebuild 8.1 rpms on Mandrake 7.2
-- in that case it had something to do with the version of rpm not
supporting some options that were in the rpm spec file.

On 8.1, it's possible that this has something to do with rpm-devel not
being installed? That's one of the first things I would check. Also check
to see what version of rpm is being used by cooker.

[expert] AMD 760MP setup...

2001-12-17 Thread Steve

Everyone I need your help here. I just build a new computer using the
Tyan Tiger MP S2460 motherboard. For those of you that don't know, this
motherboard has the AMD 760MP chipset which supports the dual Athlon MP
processors. Anyway I have the Tiger MP with dual AthonMP 1.2 gig
processors which sounds all good, but I'm having some problems getting
Mandrake 8.1 setup. I install Mandrake 8.1 with the default kernel, and
it seems that the chipset is not full recognized. So, I upgraded to the
newest kernel from Cooker 2.4.16.3. Now I'm not sure this helped
because HardDrake still shows unknown AMD components, and my Maxtor 40
gig hardrive is only running using UDMA 33 when it should be using UDMA
100. I sure would greatly appreciate any help that anyone could offer.
Also could you please tell me what rpms that I need to upgrade when
installing a new kernel. I dowloaded the smp kernel and the headers,
and used the following commands:
rpm -ivh
rpm -ivh

If this is not right please let me know as well. Thanks.

Ummm.. wouldn't this only restart the httpd-perl server? I think
what you want to do is:

# service httpd restart

This would restart both httpd and httpd-perl. Unless you're running
everything through apache-perl, you will need to restart the "regular"
apache as well.

Indeed! That does sound useful, and I've just added it to my config file.
Thanks, Pierre!

Mark, check your /etc/postfix/main.cf file. For myself, I've put those
anti-spam measures at the end of the file. If you don't already have the
relevant entries, you want to add them.

If you want to do lookups against the Orbz databases for known/reported
spam sources, add this one:

maps_rbl_domains = relays.orbd.org, inputs.orbz.org

Then, add the following two entries:

smtpd_recipient_restrictions = reject_unknown_client, permit_mynetworks,
reject_maps_rbl, check_relay_domains
smtpd_client_restrictions = reject_unknown_client,
reject_unauth_pipelining,
reject_maps_rbl

If you don't do lookups, you wouldn't include the maps_rbl_domains entry,
and you'd take out the reject_maps_rbl parts of the above two entries.

Well, it's rather easy if you can live with a mozilla being installed
in, let's say, ~/mozilla. If that's okay, download a .tar.gz (or even
just the installer) from the mozilla site and install it. Just remember
that it needs to be in your $PATH before /usr/bin!

To do this, I've made myself a ~/bin dir and put ~/bin in my PATH. Now,
~/bin/mozilla is a link to ~/mozilla/mozilla.

Easy enough for me :)

Re: [expert] Setting up a home network

2001-12-17 Thread Ken Hawkins

I know I'll take some flack over this onesince it doesn't use MDK

The best luck I have had was to dig up a 486 (or if you like, early
pentium), get two older network cards (ones that have DOS software to
configure I/O and IRQ's), and go get Eigerstein

http://lrp.steinkuehler.net/DiskImages/Eiger/EigerStein.htm

Read other pages at the site for an explanation of set-up.

SUMMARY:
This allows you to set up a router/firewall that boots from 1 floppy
disk. You can make extra copies of the disk once you have the
configuration you need, and you don't need an HDD. Once the system is
running, you can remove the disk. In the remote chance that some hacker
manages to compromise your router, you just reboot to reset everything
back to normal. There is no disk to which they can save files changes.
My installation at home gets a Dynamic IP from my DSL provider, and
dishes out Private IP's (192.168.x.x) on the inside. Once I set that up
early last year, the only maintenance has been a couple reboots due to
power interruptions. A second reset is usually required because my
router comes back up quicker than my DSL service.

I have tested this configuration against several security sites, and
come out looking pretty darn good!

[expert] SRC.RPM rebuild error

I'm trying to rebuild abiword-0.9.5 from Cooker, on 8.1. I have
satisfied all dependencies, and start the rebuild. It however, errors
with this message:

/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.26340: fg: no job control
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.26340 (%build)

RPM build errors:
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.26340 (%build)

I've seen this message on other rebuilds. What does it mean?

A google search turns up a number of posts, but no specific answers on
why, or how to fix. Some posts mention editing the SPEC file, but not
what to edit out - or in. :-)

Anyone seen this?

Yep, Tried everything I could think of and used all the tricks learned from
10 Years as a computer builder/reseller/tech support...

Set the first serial port (using the 9Pin cable so I use the "COM1" BIOS
setting) in BIOS to each of the 4 standard ports with proper addresses and
I/O's, ie: 3F8 IRQ 4...
Set the KPPP params to "com1" and then tried the other "com ports" after each
BIOS change.
The modem is found and tries to initialize regardless of which port I have it
set to but only gets as far as the "O" in OK that shows up before the ADTD
command in the log window.
I can get it to dial using minicom regardless of which port I have it set
to
The internal modem is removed from system while trying to use the external
unit.

[expert] Setting up a home network

2001-12-17 Thread Nathan A. Smith

Hi,

I have a couple of questions for you mandrake experts. I have a home
network setup with a Linux box (using Mandrake 8.0) as the
server/gateway. Due to the change with AT&T I had to install dhcp
(client) on the server to get things working. This broke a couple of
things I had setup -- specifically, Iptable/firewall settings. So I
would now like to fix server. The things I need to correct are:

1) I would like to move the all the computers from static ip address to
dhcp. This would mean that the server would need to be both a client
(on the internet side) and a server (for the home network). I want to
do this so when the dns servers should change all the systems will
update automatically. Is this possible? And if so where do I find info
on how to do it?

2) Redo the iptable rules so that it does ipforwarding, allow access
into/out off the gnutella network (I use gnut) and closes all unnessary
ports (I am not running a webserver or anything like that)

The network has 2 computers on it. One is a win98/linux box and the
other is a Win98 box.

Thanks in advance.

[expert] Problem with apache extranet server 1.3.22+

2001-12-17 Thread Panagiotis Halatsakos

Hi, I have a box with LM8.1. and apache extranet
server 1.3.22 installed.

The box belongs to a network and is viewable by the
internet( like linuxbox1.mydomain.com). Since this
will be used as a webserver, I needed some secure from
the outworld things. So I used the deny directive as
follows (in commonhttpd.conf):

Alias /new/ /webdocs/new/

AllowOverride None
Options Indexes Multiviews
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
Allow from 127.0.0.1

Ok. Now I restarted the server with :
#apachectl-perl restart

and then through a secondary network (with same domain
but different ip: windows1.mydomain.com), I pointed an
IE to http://linuxbox1.mydomain.com/new/
The result was to view my valuable data. It seems
strange, because the configuration for server-status
(which is only viewable from 127.0.0.1) is working
perfectly (that is when from the second pc I am
pointing to
http://linuxbox1.mydomain.com/server-status I get
access denied).
So what is wrong with the picture here? The same
config works on windows platform, where I did setup an
apache there to test it.

I really need help on that because I won't be able to
go on with my project and then I would have to abandon
my favourite distribution to something downgraded...

Thanks in advance, I wait for a sincere answer.

Thanks I am quite familiar with wvdial, i have been using it as far back
as redhat 6.2. I actually sent my prior email using it :) The thing I
don't like is that by default a user can't use it. Although I
remember being able to in redhat 6.2. Maybe it was a particular version
that allowed users to use it. I would really like to get ifup ppp0 working
again. It was working flawlessly. But wvdial works well and I said the
hell with it and made the binary suid. This could be an
administrators nightmare but I'm willing to take the risk because I don't
think my box is a very public target and I have it locked down pretty good
anyhow.

Have you changed the BIOS serial port setting when going from internal
(should be disabled) to external (should be enabled)? Usually, external

RE: [expert] Kaffe - is this a JavaVM or not?

2001-12-17 Thread David Joham

Kaffe is a GPL (I think) JVM. As such, Mandrake can freely distribute it
with they're downloadable ISO. However, in my experience, Kaffe is
rather limited in what it can do. I don't think its even a 1.2 compliant
JVM yet.

You would be best served to download the JDK or the JRE from SUN or IBM
and install it. Konqueror should then be able to load and use just about
any applet on the web.

Best regards,

David

Hi.

- konqueror cant load applet,
- galeon/mozilla need java-plugin (and sun jre),
- soffice need sun jre.

So tell me - what for integrate Kaffe with MDK8.1, if it _cant_ fulfil
its
task?

Or, if Kaffe _can_ do its job, why Mandrake.com didnt integrate it
correct,
so Konqueror can use it?

Simply - kaffe works - ok, let it stay, or implement correct.
If not - just leave it, and let me download sun`s jre.

2001-12-17 Thread nds

I can burn disks to my CD-RW/DVD Combo drive but I don't know how to
work the DVD part. Can anyone help me?

My CDRW/DVD is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B. HardDrake has it listed
twice. One is listed as:
---
Vendor: Unknown

Model: SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-308B

Device: /dev/hdd

Bus Type: ATAPI/IDE

and the other as:

Vendor: SAMSUNG

Model: CDRW/DVD SM-308B

Device: /dev/scd0

Bus Type: SCSI

I don't see /dev/hdd when I do a "ls -l /dev/hd*". I am using Linux
Mandrake 8.1

Is there a Netscape/IE plugin for it? If so, then www.codeweavers.com 's
Crossover may work.

There's always Win4Lin and VMware if you have the $$ and the hardware.

I wonder if Transgamings' WineX might run it?

I think WMA is a Microsoft proprietary format. If it is, then it is very
unlikely that you'll find a converter or a player for it, as
'reverse-engineering' it would be illegal (the DMCA would apply, at least
in the US).

Reject the request when the client sends SMTP commands ahead of time

This stops mail from bulk mail software that improperly uses SMTP

[expert] To awk users

Hi List,
I'm a newbie about awk.

I'm trying to print only chosen column. I have a file with
different number fields (NF), but the first 5 are equal, so I want to
delete them. I'm looking for something which allow me to print the
interval fields $6 to $NF, included, where $NF is different for each line.
My biggest $NF is 23 and the smallest is 6.
All allternatives that I tryed (following gawk-doc) gave blank
spaces before or after each line.

Many thanks in advance.

This is no joke at all! At the MandrakeSoft demo point at the Linux
World/Expo in Frankfurt, Germany, we were sponsored by AMD and used a
machine with an 1800+ XP. I really had ppl coming along asking "How does
Linux run on an XP? Isn't that a processor especially developed for Windows
XP?"

First time I heard that it took all my inner strength to remain calm and
kindly explain to the ppl that it is NOT like they thought. But I got
used to it on the second day

Re: [expert] fdisk?? Partition not mounted, linux unusable...

Hi Frank and all!

> anyway, what exactly is the problem when you try to boot?

The systems boots up but a lot of messages error appear.
I can run linux: / and /usr are mounted but /home and /files (where I keep
a large amount of personnal files) are not mounted. I can use linux as a
user but the user's directory is not there...

/mnt/windows/ (c:/ drive) is mounted properly but
/mnt/windows2/ (d:/ drive) is not. D:/ incidentally mysteriously stopped one
day being recognized by windows too so that I cannot access this partition
either through windows nor through linux...

> /expert/upgrade and after it
> has run though, it should have fixed your problem..

After having unsuccesfully tried to solve the problem for a while, I decided
to reinstall completely in expert mode, just reformating / and /usr... but
the installer couldn't read the partition table meaning that I would have
needed to erase every thing in order to repartition the disk... No need to
tell you that I promptly quit the install program.

Thanks for replying.

Great.. now that I know what it is, the best part would be to understand
why it is there and why it (if it really is telnets) is started/stopped
when I start/stop ypbind.. Does it listen on 992 by default ?

If yes, then I suspect nmap, finding something listening on 992 has
identified it as telnets on this basis. After restarting ypbind, it
listens on another port, and is no longer identified as telnets.

BTW, what is the point of telnet over ssl ? I mean given that ssh is
there..

Thanks,

Thomas.

yeah, I know, but I have had that install of linux on 5 different mainboard
with 5 different CPU's and its proven a good indicator, not anywhere near as
useful as a real "benchmark" but a good indication of the speed on that
system..

I wasn't giving it as any indication of its speed compared to P4's, that
reference I made to the P4 was from a PC mag I have here that compared it to
a P4 2 gig and the XP1800+ pretty much sweeped the feild. (though the P4
wasn't using RDRAM, think it was using DDR just like the XP1800+) anyway,
even Quake and Expendable...

the results went something like this:

Resolution 640x480/32 1024x768/32// 1600x1200

Athlon XP1800+
QIII174.90fps 168115.10

P42gig
QIII153.1fps148.90 108.60

The expenndable results were just as good. but I am not that keen on typing
it all out..
XP was also miles ahead of the P4, but I don't mention that because thats a
known
shortcomming of the P4.

The tests where done on production systems using the same vid card in both
(G3 Titanium 500)
with the latest detonator and chipset drivers

its just a telling report I think,, especially since the XP is less than
half the price of the P4.

Repeat after me: BogoMIPS are bogus... BogoMIPS are bogus... BogoMIPS are
bogus. They are only useful in the context of one system. If your system is
running at X BogoMIPS, and then you tweak a setting and now it's at X+Y
BogoMIPS, your system is running faster. You can't use BogoMIPS as a
benchmark to tell if a P4 is faster than an XP or not. For that, you need a
program that measures real MIPS... Or some other subjective comparision like
kernel compile times.

For mutt, here's a much simplier way of doing it.

Make an edit to your ~/.muttrc that reads something along these lines.

set signature='cat /home/timh/.signature ; echo "

uptime ; echo "

That's all one line, and that's what gives me the signature that I
have. That can all of course be changed to your astetic choosing, but
that's the easier way of going about it in mutt.

Basically it's telnet over SSL. Much more secure.

[timh@r2d2 timh]$ grep 992 /etc/services
telnets 992/tcptelnet protocol over TLS/SSL
telnets 992/udptelnet protocol over TLS/SSL

It's used more in BSD from what I've seen.

[timh@eric timh]$ telnet yoda.unixtechs.org
Trying 66.41.161.213...
Connected to yoda.unixtechs.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
Trying SRA secure login:
User (userID): userID
Password:
[ SRA accepts you ]

It's still not as good as ssh, or have as many options as ssh, but it's
better then regular telnet. Most servers that will accept a telnet
connection will accept a SSL telnet connection as well.

But if your telnet client doesn't allow, or doesn't know to send to
that port, it will not.

I'm pretty sure you can get a client for Mandrake. FreeBSD I know for
sure installs off the bat with this secure form of telnet.

 | Hi,
 |
 | I just ran nmap on my machine and it shows 'telnets' listening on port
 | 992. Of course, telnet is disabled and there is no trace of telnetd or
 | whatever running when doing ps -ef.
 |
 | Any idea what this could be ?
 |
 | Thanks,
 |
 | Thomas.
