"make dep clean modules modules_install install" is exactly the same

Re: [expert] smtp(s) from outside the network...

2002-04-29 Thread Robin

What you want to look into is the mynetworks line in
/etc/postfix/main.cf. If not set, postfix will (only) accept smtp relay
from clients on the same subnet.

Add all the clent's ip address you want to do smtp relay from to this
line, eg. "mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/8, and whatever other
ip"

If you get random ip when connect from outside your home network, you
want to look into pop-before-smtp solution.

Also, check with ordb.org so your server won't be victim of ube.

[expert] X listen port 6000

2002-04-29 Thread Mendez Martín
Title: X listen port 6000

Hi list,
i am trying to force that MDK 8.2 no listen in port 6000. ( I readed that this is should be a default configuration in 8.2, but after install mdk 8.2 + KDE 2.2 i could telnet to the linux machine in port 6000 from other one )

I tried to start X (using startx) with startx -- -nolisten tcp parameter but after X go up i continue connecting to the machine using telnet in port 6000.

Someone know how disable this x11 port.
Regards.

You need to make an initrd image if you want to use a journalling f/s
for root, and you have to make sure that your bootloader (lilo or
grub) is aware of it and uses it. The reason is that the modules for
these f/s's are not in the kernel itself and need to be
retrieved/loaded from the initrd (RAM image).

Without a valid initrd, you will get those kernel panics. If you
setup the filesystems during install, the appropriate options should
be added to your bootloader menu and the initrd should be created.

[expert] vmware with secure kernel

2002-04-29 Thread Vincent Danen

Has anyone gotten vmware to compile modules for the secure kernel in
8.2/cooker yet? It's complaining that the source in
/usr/src/linux/include is different from the running kernel
(ie. 2.4.18-6.4mdk vs. 2.4.18-6.4mdksecure).

So I try to build the modules manually, in /usr/lib/vmware/modules, as
this worked well for me with 8.1 when it wasn't building properly, but
now when I run vmware-config.pl it doesn't find any suitable drivers
and I've tried saving them as up-2.4.18-6.4mdksecure-8.2, smp-*, and
even secure-*, with the SMP option enabled in the properties file
because it looks as though the secure kernels are built for SMP.

On another note, is there a performance hit on a single CPU system
running the secure kernel with SMP code enabled?

Size it like you want, then do Window|Save View Profile "Web Browsing".
It will pop up a dialog box, and one of the checkboxes is "Save window
size in profile". Check it, and Konq will open up the same size every

The only problem I remember in converting the inetd entries to xinetd
files. My client xinetd files look something like:

service amanda
{
socket_type = dgram
protocol = udp
wait = yes
user = bin
server = /path/to/amandad
}

all of the amanda stuff built from scratch. Worked fine with Amanda
2.4.2p2 with an Amanda 7.2 server. I am updating that server to
Mandrake 8.2 this wednesday on new hardware and Amanda will be updated
too. I will take notes.

I completely agree.

Why is it permittied that M$ basically strong arms a vendor into
installing Windows on a new computer, but an organization that freely
gives away machines so today's youth can futher themselves by becoming
familiar with technology, is out of the question. All because that
computer uses a rival, competitor's OS.

It just further shows that M$ is trying to brainwash anybody they can
get their OS on. Yet this is still permitted. Why did they bother
starting a anti-trust law suit against them if they're not going to
punish them for their behavior.

But that's just another rant... *sigh*

You can run a firewall to close the X port without changing it. For

Try pointing the include to /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION/build/include
instead. They probably point to the same place but maybe the test is

[expert] X won't start - "no screens found"

2002-04-29 Thread David Rankin

Folks, I need your help!

Over the weekend I installed LM 8.2 on my system at home. The system
is a tri-boot with W98, LM7.2 and LM8.2. Specifics are:

AMD K6-2/233 w/64 Meg and VXpro chipset
#9 Imagine 128 video w/4 Meg VRAM

The install went fine untill the X window install. Xconfigurator
could not get the system configured. I have tried every combination of
resolution/color depth but X still won't start. Under 3.3.6 I get the
fatal error "no screens found" Under 4, I don't get the no screen, but I
get a similar error. (I'll check when I get home)

What is strange is that it all works great under LM7.2, but won't
start under 8.2. Any suggestions on what I should try? I have compared
the config files /etc/X11/XF86Config under LM7.2 and 8.2 and they look
the same for all practical purposes. Any help would be appreciated

ya know...i'd be willin to bet that this particular vendor has/had a
previous arangement to sell MS loaded desktops and was looking to make
some new customers by giving away systems to schools for future contacts.
if they ahd such an agreement with MS then the big turd would be fully
within their rights to insist that the "not" do this. I can't see any
other way this would be possible.

[expert] Losing Gnomba Server Connections

2002-04-29 Thread Ralph Miranda

I'm able to hook up Gnome Samba Browser and connect to my LAN... but the
minute I shut down the browser everything disconnects and I'm unable to
search through out LAN using Nautilus I also tried to activate Gnome
Samba Browser (which was successful) then open up Nautilus to see what was
happening.. I was still unable to check into the LAN system. It worked
great in Mandrake 8.1 but it doesn't work in Mandrake 8.2

[expert] Problems with Installation of Printer Drivers

2002-04-29 Thread Ralph Miranda

I tried to install printers for my system but failed. Went into Mandrake
Control Center --> Hardware --> Printer --> Expert Mode --> add a new
printer --> Printer on remote lpd serve. I typed the print host name:
"mushu" then the remote printer name: "p2014" Then I scrolled to HP -->
LaserJet 4000 --> Postscript (recommended). After I hit everthing
looked like standard loading procedures. I also set it as a default
printer. When I tried to print a test page, nothing happened. Then the
following configuration came up... and the information was backwards.
"Printer: HP LaserJet 4000 on LPT Server "p2014", printer "mushu"
(Defaults). I know for a fact I chose the correct info.

My printer worked really good using Mandrake 8.1but the program
collapsed in Mandrake 8.2 Please advise?

Did you do a full install or an upgrade? I had the same problem with my k6-2
amd with sblive. I reinstalled the system and then all worked fine.
Hopefully, you have a seperate /home partition and backup your config files
from /etc if you have something groovy life postfix with imap and ldap
configured and etc.

Do an expert install and you won't have to worry much. Just choose not to

Does anybody know if gnomba and Samba works in Redhat 7.2 or not?

So far as I know, it worked in Mandrake 8.1 (really great) but it doesn't
work at all in Mandrake 8.2. I'm getting a lot of buggy problems in
Mandrake 8.2 and I'm seriously thinking of switching from Mandrake 8.2 to

The only problem I'm afraid of is I have a home folder and I don't know if

Hey guys, just to clarify, these guys were giving away 10 celeron CPUs
and 1 Xeon CPU per school and the school provided the rest (Mobo, mem,
case, etc) for a server and 10 X terminals using the K12's distro.

Last week i think MS decided that they weren't confident about the
schools WINDOWS COMPUTERS and wanted an audit of as computers running
WINDOWS OS for pirated software. They said either perform and audit in
a month, give us half a million, or pay for _US_ (MS) to do an audit.

just asking for a school to audit their software is not a bad thing.
schools need to follow the law. but it's (at a minimum) plain wrong to
demand $500,000 if they can't do it in a month. how do you spell
'extortion'?

it is supposed to be just a coincidence that this is the same isd that
is supposed to deploy linux soon (not by next month). ya know, if MS
had multi-user permissions in 95, 98 etc, maybe they wouldn't have to
worry about students installing pirated software on the computers.

yes, I know, xp has multi user stuff...maybe that's what the .5 mil is for.

maybe this is why my ISD didn't budge on this, they didn't want an audit.

[expert] What worked in 8.1 and does not in 8.2

2002-04-29 Thread Wolfgang Bornath

Hi,

After the first initial positive impression of 8.2 and KDE 3.0 I start
being annoyed about things that worked in 8.1 but don't work in 8.2 (same
hardware of course).

Let me give 2 exemples:

1. EURO sign
In 8.1 I had to tweak /etc/sysconfig/i18n to get the EURO sign working in
all apps including text based apps like mc. This doesn't work anymore in
8.2. With german locale and default charset set to 8859-15 I get the EURO
sign in all HTML-based apps like Konqueror, Mozilla, and Galeon and also
in OpenOffice (that's where I need it most) but not in Kwrite, Kate, or
any text based apps.
If I use the tweak propagated on MandrakeUser.org (de_DE@EURO) I cannot
start OpenOffice because I get an error: 'OpenOffice does not support
locale entry LANG=de_DE@EURO. Closed.'
I could not get the EURO sign working in XEmacs in 8.2 and *that* has not
changed in 8.2! Would have been surprised, though

2. Sound
Now this IS annoying! I have a notebook with the infamous SiS 630 chipset
but I got sound working (alsa) in 8.1. Now, with the same settings it
just sits there and is quiet as a fish. It gives no errors in the logs
and alsa gets started without error. I also checked the mixer settings
(alsamixer) but no sound.
It looked like it was with 8.1, 'play foo.wav' looked like it is playing
the file but no sound. In 8.1 I changed the mixer settings through
alsamixer and that was it. But not in 8.2.

modules.conf:
--
alias usb-interface usb-ohci
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-trident
above snd-card-trident snd-pcm-oss
alias eth0 sis900

aplay /usr/share/sounds/scream.wav

Aplay: version 0.5.10 by Jaroslav Kysela <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Using soundcard 'SiS 7018 PCI Audio at 0xd400, irq 11'
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/scream.wav' : Unsigned 8-bit, Rate 11025Hz, Mono

and then: quiet. After the normal duration of the wav I get back my
prompt.

There are a few other things like ugly fonts but I think I'll manage that
in due time.

[expert] browser nazi buster

2002-04-29 Thread Brian Parish

Can anyone point me at a way of fooling a website that insists on IE and
refuses to load if anything else is used? Supposedly this is because
the site uses some javascript that "doesn't work in Netscape and some
other browsers", but I'd be surprised if Galeon couldn't handle it. Is
there a way of having Galeon, or another linux browser tell the site
that it's IE, but still behave reasonably in other ways?

I'd like to avoid using the site at all of course, but unfortunately I
work for these people, and this secure site is how my jobs get
allocated.

TIA

Some sites are fooled by setting Opera to IE.

This kind of junk sure makes one wonder why there are standards and some
webmasters choose to ignore them in favor of proprietary junk.

If more people complained to these sites then maybe they'd worry about W3C
standards.

Exactly where in the preferences? - doesnt show on my version (Galeon

before compiling it which worked as well.

Ya, and our government seems to be no better. Has anyone here ever did
some IT work for our government? The .gov domain is ran entirely on

How about

  rpm -e `rpm -qa | grep kde3`

You'll also need to remove the other 4 RPM's as well.

[expert] Dell Inspiron 8200??

2002-04-29 Thread Mcleod, Ian

Hi,

Has anyone had much experience with the Dell 8200 (or even the 8100) on
Linux Mandrake?

I am about to purchase one and need to determine which hardware components
to specify. I have heard Lucent internal modems can work with Linux - is
this true? What about the Ethernet card - will 3COM internal cards work?

And the sound? They will supply a Crystal (Cyrus Logic?) CS4205 internal
sound card chipset (apparently partly software driven?) - this looks like a
bit of a concern too.

Any ideas very welcome!!!
