My bad. I think I downloaded the file for Windows XP. It is .zip not
.tar.gz. No wonder I can't install. I will try again. Sorry.

There are only *.ico files from downloaded file. I can see the icons in

Well, it mysteriously started working. I don't know what I did or what
happened to get it fixed. I'm using a Voodoo3 2000 card that will be
upgraded as soon as funds become available(probably after the first of the
year). Thanks for checking back with me on it.

Re: [expert] Why is it so difficult to get a wireless card to workin linux????

2002-11-14 Thread James Sparenberg
I may maybe not have run across something that has a lot to do with
the "problem" and the fact that some have the problem some don't. I've
been know for my ability to lose dongles for quite some time. With
dongles being almost as expensive as the full pcmcia nic I just keep
buying new nic's ... So today ... when I did it again. I bit the bullet
and bought a dongle free nic. Same manf as my other nic and it
didn't work... took it backchanged model still doesn't work.
Guess what the problem turns out to be! The new dongle free nics are 32
bit my dongled nics where always 16 bit. EVEN though the website says
my laptop supports 32 bit nics it turns out that not all versions (there
where 7!) of this model have 32 bit support... sheesh. (called compaq)
Could it be that these wireless cards are 32 bit cardbus and the laptop
isn't? In the windows world the drivers apparently cheat and run the 32
bit card as if it was 16 bit. But here it doesn't work. (didn't in NT
either but compaq claims XP would.. like I care.) Just a thought.

Did you ever get this resolved? I had the same issue when I was using a

everything worked fine, except switching to another virtual console.

Re: [expert] Mandrake kernel 2.4.19 royally screwed my sound

2002-11-14 Thread James Sparenberg
Pradeor,

I've done multiple installs on my laptop. (just testing some stuff
before I settled down to do work conclusion Blue bytes ) (pun
intended) and since installing more ram, I needed a larger "suspend"
partition. I lost sound during one of the installs myself for some odd
reason. Another had sound but in MCC sound card had no info. Now I
keep these two lines from modules.conf handy.

alias sound-slot-0 maestro
above snd-es1968 snd-pcm-oss

Now Mine is a compaq not an IBM but it does have the same sound
card. I'd also recommend going to IBM's site as they have some pretty
extensive docs on Linux on the ThinkPad.

James

PS ... to anyone who uses pre DDR ram on their laptop or desktop.
check out the prices on RAM . I found a high of $112.00 US for ram
on this puppy (Compaq M700) and was able to buy it for $50.00 Pre DDR
ram is at rock bottom again so it's a good time to max out.

Try installing (re-installing?) the rpm-helper package... (current cooker
version is 'rpm-helper-0.7.1-1mdk.noarch.rpm'.)

Of course, you might wind up installing a whole new set of 'rpm*' rpms, which
has bitten me in the a$$ on at least one occasion... :)

Could someone please tell me how to disable the console blanker. I have

These do not work. I am using a laptop running KDE and Mandrake Version 9.
I have also tried disabling power management again without success.

I've seen others say this:

$ rpm -ql rpm

These last files, iianm, are used as lock files when rpm is running. If
rpm crashes or is exited uncleanly and they get left, they can screw up
any rpm-related program. If rpm is not running, delete any of these
files and rpm --rebuilddb to solve a number of package manager failures.

In your mailer, instead of leaving 'reply to' blank, you entered your

many other lists doin this. Tryin to stop people from makin this mildy
rude mistake is like discouraging HTML (very rude). Same thing with not
limiting characters per line to =<72. Usually it's just an unawareness
of the consequences by (new) users.

It's been netiquette since before there was a Net, to limit sigs to
no more than 4 lines (including blank ones), and no banners, ASCII art

where from. Preferably on one line. Specially now that small screen
hand held wireless devices are popular, and more'n more people are
connected worldwide, but pay for d/l size and/or connect time.

[expert] RPM database wierdness

2002-11-14 Thread Brian Schroeder
I have noticed a wierd problem with RPM on both my home and
work machines since upgrading to mdk9.0. After the machine
has been up for a while, all rpm operations hang. This includes
rpm -q and rpm --rebuilddb as well as rpm -U, rpm -e etc.

rpm -qa and rpm --rebuilddb normally get part way through before
hanging.

In each case, I have been able to kill all other running rpm
processes, and there has been no related error, so far as I can
tell, in /var/log/messages.

The only way I have found to fix it is to reboot (just as you
would to fix a windows problem). Rpm then works for a while,
and then stops again. It's rather frustrating.

Brian.

IIRC, and I've not looked to confirm this, it *should* be done as root.
Actually, I know this is the case, now that I come to think of it.

sudo basically runs urpmi as root. To that end, it will be using
root's environment, not the user environment.

I know this because when I build updates, root has the private key to
sign packages, and using sudo, I sign the packages with that key. The
user doesn't even have the public key (which is a nuisance, but a
different story). So when I want to verify a package, if I just do
"rpm -K *.rpm", I get unknown sigs. If I do "sudo rpm -K *.rpm",
they're verified correctly.

I suspect the same should be for urpmi. IIRC, urpmi shouldn't do
anything strange or different to inherit info from the user executing
sudo.

[expert] Scripts or software to add many new users

2002-11-14 Thread Patrick Atlas

Hello,

We are managing hundred of users on a network based on Netscape Exchange
Server (mail, news and web).
In a few weeks, we would like to change to a linux server (Mandrake of
course!)
As we don't want to create by hand each existing user, is there a script
or a software that will automatically:

-create a new account (possibly from a list of existing
logins/passwords)
-apply the new user to adequate groups
-create a file with his login as name
-create a virtual host to his file in the apache configuration
-apply a DocRoot in proftp configuration
-create a user and his database with his login/password in mysql
-copy a phpmyadmin with adequate configuration
-and few other little things...

Any ideas?

Thanks

I tried building the 2.4.19 mandrake kernel with the appropriate sound drivers
compiled into the kernel - it fails. 2.4.19 is broken in a number of ways.
If you want sound, I suggest you do what I am doing - go back to a proper
kernel, a functional kernel - and go back to 2.4.18. Supermount worked
properly, sound worked properly, etc. None of the garbage that one must
tolerate with the 2.4.19 kernel.

Hey, Tried that. The performance is still the same. But, anyways, why

mozilla should do on it's own self regularly. Internet Explorer does not

I feel that Mozilla on Mandrake 9.0 was compiled poorly with bad

main thing is this is spoiling Mozilla's reputation badly as a BIG,

Hey, guess what! I tried it again, and this time sndconfig worked!
In 8.2, sndconfig worked instantaneously. In 9.0 it takes a long
time. I guess what I did before was kill sndconfig before it had

15 minutes later, it found the ESS card. Sucks that it took so long,
but at least it works.

Creating computer software is always a demanding and painstaking
process -- an exercise in logic, clear expression, and almost fanatical
attention to detail. It requires intelligence, dedication, and an
enormous amount of hard work. But, a certain amount of unpredictable
and often unrepeatable inspiration is what usually makes the difference
between adequacy and excellence.

[expert] LSI53C1030 SCSI

2002-11-14 Thread Gareth Hash
Hello

I believe I have found the correct drivers for the LSI Logic 1030
SCSI adapter and I have it on diskette. However I could not get
Mandrake 9.0 to prompt me for it. If there is an easier way or if the
drivers for which I am looking have a different name in the default
Mandrake install, please let me know.

Thank you for your advice.

[expert] Mandrake kernel 2.4.19 royally screwed my sound

2002-11-14 Thread Praedor Tempus
I have an IBM Thinkpad with an ESS Solo1 sound "card". It has worked fine
with most previous Mandrake kernels up to 2.4.18. I recently built and
installed the Mandrake 2.4.19 kernel (with the correct sound settings
selected in xconfig) and find it has totally croaked my sound.

There is no /dev/dsp, no sound-slot-0, no sound-card-0, nothing. If I try to
run DrakConf and then run the harddrake to resetup the sound card, it fails
because it cannot find sound-slot-0. I have done a system search and
naturally this module doesn't exist.

I have always used Alsa sound on my thinkpad and it has worked. Now that alsa
has been blended into the kernel, it no longer works. What does it take to
get sound working?

There are no sound modules getting loaded at all during bootup. "Running
lspci -v" produces this for my soundcard
:
00:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1969 Solo-1 Audiodrive
(rev 02)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI]: Unknown device 1002
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5
I/O ports at 7800 [size=64]
I/O ports at 7850 [size=16]
I/O ports at 7870 [size=16]
I/O ports at 7890 [size=4]
I/O ports at 78a4 [size=4]
Capabilities:

Yup, there it is. It's just that Mandrake kernel 2.4.19 doesn't see it.

What arcane trick is now necessary to get sound working again?

I've come across this same message twice in the last week. I chalk it
up to a bad package, but I'm not certain.

I'm getting an error when I try to run rpm on anything. The message I get is:

rpmdb: region error detected; run recovery.
error: db4 error(-30981) from dbenv->open: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run
database recovery
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - (-30981)

There doesn't seem to be a recover option for rpm. "rpm --rebuilddb" gets
that same error message. Anyone know what needs to be done to repair the RPM
database?

in /var/lib/rpm there are a couple of files __db.001 __db.002, erase them then try again to rebuild

Both Matrox and ATI and offer dual head cards.

I have a couple of ATI cards, none, are dual head, and I any quite happy
with them.
But I also have a GeForce2 and 3 and have not encountered the problem
you had.

As far as a dual head, especially if you do not care about 3d, I think
Matrox has the better track record.

freeswan-1.98b-1mdk is installed, but perhaps incorrectly.

/root/freeswan-1.98b-1mdk.i586.rpm is not installed, rpm -q looks at a
string, not a file, and the string is not in the database.

If you want to delete the package try "rpm -e freeswan-1.98b-1mdk" or "rpm
-e freeswan"

It is supported, I have it running but had the same problems during install
tried different machines and so. Solution set the transfer rate to 20 MB/s on the
controller. ( with new firmware default is 40MB/s).

even have it running Raid 1 :-)

Thanks Martin.

I already have an Atapi CD-ROM.

I believe (as it has been in the past), that the Adaptec AHA2940 SCSI Disk
controller is not supported in the installation. I need a solution.

Robert Wideman

try a --rebuilddb and then see if it still says the package is
installed. it almost looks like there's something wrong with the script
inside the package itself.
