[expert] Driver for AC'97 modem
AC'97 modem seems to be rather recent. I am looking for a driver (Mandrake linux). There is a page on compurative.com to load a driver but the ftp gives a 500 error. if anybody got this driver could he tell how to get it? Thanks! Thanks. That is an excellent idea! Now I have to try to remember how to keep the tail of a log constantly writing to the monitor. The samba server is my desktop behind my firewall then my laptop and my wifes Korean Windows box are both behind the firewall and samba works fine. Like you I don't have a ton of time to devote to firewalls. I just want something that works and I don't have to think about it. I'm running an old 50 buck pentium 233 as the firewall with a 2 gig hdd. Currently I've got SNF running on it and I've tried smoothwall. both are OK but still not as mutable as I'd like.. BUT if you just want to set it up and walk away they both seem to do that. [expert] hack attack analysis second attempt
Sorry, I used an old subject and I'm guessing no one saw it earlier. I'd like to try again. Since I wrote this earlier today, I gave up on openbsd without the cdrom. I decided to look at Mandrake security. Has anyone played with it and how secure is it really? It is a snap to install. = Well guys... it has been 5 years since somone got in. They finally did it. I've been using the floppy disk coyote linux for years now. They aren't keeping up it seems and the last update I got was in January. The first clue was zone alarm on my boys box popped up some denials. Regrettably, I walked over to my firewall, hit the reset button and didn't give it another thought. Now I've lost all the logs on that server and don't know what state it was in. About an hour later I notice that my linux box was showing 2 ip addresses in my samba server list that weren't even on my subnet! NOW it has my full attention!!! I did not have tripwire installed. Just ran out of time, but I DID have snort loaded and not fully or properly configured I don't think. However, I DID get some interesting log entries that I thought I'd pass on to see what you guys thought, and perhaps shed some light on how they are whacking my firewall. I'm in the process of setting up an openbsd firewall. That should give them something to chew on for awhile. I'm sure I've been hacked but good, because they screwed up my ntp, set my nic to promisuous mode, and looks like they gained root access. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe that the reference was to a 2GB file size limit on the recieving box which in this case is NT... which I believe even with the newest patch updates is still true for NT. However I haven't used a windows NT box but once or twice in my life. (and yes I'm bragging *grin*) So no matter how big a file you can put on Linux it won't go onto NT if NT limits file size to 2gb.. Re: [expert] Shorewall Follies - It's drivin' me NUTS!!
Well I've got the shorewall rules for samba figured out. Please correct my work if I've made any mistakes. Port 445 is the port that XP/2K use for this purpose and the website did not take XP/2K into account. Port 631 is a network printer which may be important when I get around to putting up the print server. For added security (I hope) I've added entries for smbd and nmbd in hosts.deny and hosts.allow. I'm not sure what effect this will have but hey, like I'm tryin, see. ;-) Here's a question: Do I need to have tcpd running to get wrappers to work? I thought I heard somewhere that wrappers were handled in the kernel these days. I get the same thing using Cooker. I think if you are referring to the dnshostname for the ip. Instead of mybox.in.chi.isp.net, I get my old thatbox.in.chi.isp.net. This keeps me from ever getting the proftpd server to start up on my computer. Many months ago when I was with my old ip address with the same isp, I installed proftpd server using Mandrake's MCC ftp server configuration. [expert] Opera and Java: which RPMs?
I would like touse Opera as web browser. I am however having trouble getting the it to work smoothly with java. It still resulted in the error message. - I have tried kaffe (1.0.7-1mdk) and j2re (1.4.0_01-1mdk) as my java runtime environment. - I have tried opera downloaded from opera's home page (6.10-20021029.4-shared-qt) as well as the version from MandrakeClub (6.03-0.static.1mdk). The latter is staticly linked and does not issue the error above, instead the opera stalls when trying to run java. Does anybody have a opera and Java working together. If so, what are the correct combination of RPMs? I would think that maybe it's not being reported correctly, actually. One would think shared is any memory that's being used for multiple things, so for instance libc, since nearly everything uses uses parts of libc on a shared basis. And Linux is a multi-user system, even if you're the only user, in which case we have several instances of you using the system, or the degenerate case of only one user on the system, which is only during single-user mode. And if you have multiple users (even multiple isntances of you) you have multiple instances of shells running, possibly multiple editors, multiple getty processes and so forth running. A fair amount (actually, anything that doesn't change) of that should be shared. As a rule, then, data and stack pages aren't typically shareable, since they change for each user and/or instance. But code pages are usually shareable, since they don't change. > 'buffers, cached' seem to make use of otherwise empty space, > as the 'used' figure is usually close to 'total'. buffers seem to be self-explanatory, i.e., buffers allocated to disks etc. cached would be everything else. For instance, if you plan on doing a lot of compiling, there would be instances where lots of the same code gets reused - for instance, between subsequent invocations of gcc. I would think that the system would get those pages from cache rather than have to reload pages from the gcc binary for each compile. > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] mdk 8.2 + updates + dhcpcd + DLink 530TX+
I figured it out. What happened is that I usually manually configure Samba, but this time around I thought just for the fun of it I would mess around with the wizard. (This is my test box after all.) The problem is the wizard changes around your ethernet configuration and knowing me, I probably typed in something wrong. So then it reconfigured my system to a statically assigned IP address that was wrong. On Friday 29 November 2002 19:40, you wrote: > [into] > Here is something that seems to be broken. [expert] mdk 8.2 + updates + dhcpcd + DLink 530TX+
[into] Here is something that seems to be broken. I took my mdk 8.2 Professional CDs, copied them to the RAID 5 array on my main Linux box (running mdk 8.2), and installed over the network (through http) to my test box earlier today. The install itself went without a hitch and I was able to run the automatic updater (over cable modem through my firewall). [problem] The problem that I noticed is that once the machine came up after the install the subnet it dhcpd was wrong. (Instead of grabbing a.b.c.s it got a.b.0.s.) [hardware] NIC: DLink 530TX+ [diagnostics] This used to work on a previous install of mdk 8.2 on the same box. (Different NIC do to two others recently going out on the box). I doubt that the problem is the NIC this time (DLink 530TX+) because the NIC dhcped its info and worked flawlessly on the install and continues to work flawlessly under Windows XP on the same box. The dhcpd.leases file on the dhcpd server has an entry for test box that is identical except that it shows a.b.c.s for the IP while the test box itself has a.b.0.s (notice the 0 instead of c). The entry has a different IP address than the machine did with the previous NICs, so it had to of worked properly at least once. Also there are no entries with the a.b.0.s in the dhcpd.leases file while at the same time the machine grabs its info without reporting errors. Something else that I noticed is that Mandrake's RPM manager reports that I have the original dhcpcd client on the machine. I am wondering if something else got updated and messed things up or if there is something else going on that I haven't thought about yet. I also thought that it is a little ironic that this very same NIC I am having problems with now had been dishing out IP addresses to my network until about 55 days ago when I decomissioned my AMD K5-75 (due to the motherboard flaking out). Over the past year and a half I have had two ports on my switch go out from under this card, but the card itself checked out fine. [footer] Any help would be appreciated. --Jason Snyder-- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

In order to un-tar them, you have to concatenate them and then un-tar: cat xa* | tar xfp - Of course, you have to be able to store the tar files of your 8GB of data before transfering them if this is to work. By the way, >>don't<< use this to create backups that fit onto CDs since you lose your data if one CD is damaged. 2) Create a list of all of the files you want to transfer, then create many tar files, each of them with just a few of your files. cd my_directory/.. find . -type f > filelist.txt numfiles=100 # We will put 100 files into each tar-ball/ # Calculate the total number of files: lines=`wc -l filelist.txt | sed 's/ *\([0-9]*\) .*/\1/'` numtarballs=`expr $lines / $numfiles` for (( i = 0; i <= $numtarballs; i++ )); do min=`expr 1 + $numfiles \* $i`; list=`tail +$min filelist.txt | head -${numfiles}`; echo i = $i; tar cf ball$i.tar $list; done You can use this solution if you don't have enough space to store all the tar files on your server since you don't have to run the entire for loop in one run. Of course you have to adjust the variable numfiles so that your tar-files don't become too many and so that none of them becomes larger than 2GB. Hope this helps, Narfi. There is a GUI program called paloma that uses MySQL to keep a catalog of your CD's MP3's, wav-files, and ogg's. You can rip and encode, and search on songname, album title, artist and lots more. You can also use it as a player. I have an RPM for 8.2 of it on my website, and I have an RPM for 9.0 (not on my site) that requires some libs for 8.2 though (libsig++, libgdkmm), because it won't build with the libs from 9.0. If you're interested I can send you the 9.0 RPM. http://paloma.sourceforge.net/ http://home.wanadoo.nl/cchq/conmen/rpms.html#paloma You can also try 'gtktalog' which is simpler and easier to get started with, yet very efficient. Since you are seemingly better at Linux than the other person, you let them login from the kdm screen. For YOU to get into X, you just press Ctrl-Alt-F2, login as your regular user, and run 'startx [ desktop ] -- :1'. This will start up a second X session with a second desktop running as your user. http://www.monkeynoodle.org/lrp/lrp-firewall-faq.html you can grep /etc/services to see what the port is supposed to be used for. Re: [expert] Shorewall Follies - It's drivin' me NUTS!!
I know the shorewall question can be resolved, but as KevinO points out it shouldn't be resolved by someone who's not fully aware of the issues at stake. In the last five days I've gotten nearly a thousand denied attempts to relay spam mail through my server clogging up my logs right now in chunks of thirty messages per server, mostly coming from home Windows boxes on cable and DSL networks. This is clearly a worm, and the few boxes that I've bothered to nmap all have IIS on them and ports 137-139 wide open to the world, allowing anonymous SMB browsing. Since the worm only sends 30 messages at a time, it will probably go unnoticed for months or years because it isn't going to have a big effect on bandwidth or CPU -- the only way these ditzes are ever going to know that they are hosting a spam worm is if someone gets annoyed enough to track them down and slap them upside their pointy little heads. When you don't secure your home box with nothing important on it, there is a chance that your neighbor's snot-nosed brat will go delete your files that you don't care about. However, the odds are much higher that the snot-nosed brat will use your box to download and serve up porn and warez that are illegal to possess in your state, and in the current USA climate this is likely to earn you a visit from the Feds. When uncapping your cable modem can earn you this (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/013226&mode=nested&tid=123) do you want to find out what they do when you're mirroring kiddie porn and copies of .Net Server? An even higher probability exists that your box will be nailed by a worm and turned into a zombie node for the next big DoS or spam flood attack. So, if you're not able to figure out how to get shorewall to do what you need to do (and it is not an easy package), try removing it and working with one of the others, like MonMotha, and if you can't get that to do what you want then for goodness sake go spend $100 on a commercial firewall appliance. My mail logs will thank you for it. I've been using the cddb_get package with a MySQL database. http://armin.emx.at/cddb/CDDB_get-latest.tar.gz Works very well. Create the database with 'mysqladmin create CDs', then from the CDDB_get-2.11 directory, do 'mysql CDs You now have a MySQL database called CDs with 2 tables, cds and tracks. Then do 'perl Makefile.pl' then 'make' & 'make install' You'll have to edit the resulting cddb.pl with the correct login information for your MySQL server. localhost for the server, root as the user, and "" for the password works for a default installation. I also added the following line to cddb.pl so that the cd drawer ejects after writing to the database (on line 356): system ("eject /dev/scd0"); #or whatever your cd device is... So, while connected to the Internet, simply put in your cds one by one, run 'cddb.pl' and it will go off to the Internet, grab the cddb info, and populate your database. You may have to manually add any cds that don't exist in the cddb database, I suggest that you investigate phpMyAdmin for this. I'll leave that up to you :) Also, believe it or not, I wrote a couple of php pages to view my collection only yesterday... Put them under /var/www/html and view them with your browser. I hope that this solution fits the bill. Kind regards, John... for every kind of mail, except spam! :-) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

RE: [expert] How can i copy 8G to an NT machine and keep.....
As others have suggested, instead of tarring it up at all just scp or rsync to the NT box. An additional wrinkle required to make that work is to install Cygwin on the NT box so it can thunk Unix permissions to NT permissions -- since the two OSs have completely different security models, this is required to get meaningful output on the NT side if you're not tar'ing it up (which sounds problematic due to size). Another tar tip, though not likely to save your bacon here, is to use j in place of z to pipe through bzip2 instead of gzip -- compression is much better. Examples: tar cjvf myfile.tar.bz2 mydir/ && tar xjvf myfile.tar.bz2. On Fri, 2002-11-29 at 07:22, Ken Walker wrote: > >I am sure that you have your reasons for coping "to" an NT machine. Re: [expert] memory usage
> is there a command or utility which would show > which processes are using how much of which parts of memory? top is useful in determining which applications are using the most CPU or memory resources, but most of what is out there are basically graphical enhancements of 'top'; ksysguard for instance. I'm not sure what you mean by 'which parts' of memory. There is only really one part of memory, well, two, if you count swap space. Three, maybe, if you count buffere or cache... excuse me, I'll start again, I'm Cardinal Fang from the Spanish Inquisition ... :) The point - as far as linux is concerned, there's only one uniform segment of memory, and even if a process is using a bunch of different "pieces" as far as the kernel and the process is concerned, it's all one piece starting at logical location 0 in memory. That's what we really mean by 'virtual' memory, not simply the idea that disk areas can be used to add memory, although that's a side effect. If you look at output from ps -aux you will see some fields that are useful, however: root 1 0.0 0.0 1288 84 ?SOct25 0:06 init root 2 0.0 0.0 00 ?SW Oct25 0:04 [keventd] root 3 0.0 0.0 00 ?SW Oct25 0:00 [kapmd] root 4 0.0 0.0 00 ?SWN Oct25 0:04 [ksoftirqd_CPU0] ** ** These two fields are virtual size and resident size. The first is a measure of how much RAM the process thinks it needs, and the second is the actual amount of RAM that's actually used by the process. Anything else, presumably, is swapped out. Other indicators are 'SW' for swapped. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Hi, Is there some way to get xscreensaver working with kdm? Following the instructions from man xscreensaver I added to /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: xhost +localhost xscreensaver & but this didn't work. I tested adding other commands to this file and they were executed correctly when kdm comes up. Does anybody know how I can get this working? Re: [expert] Shorewall Follies - It's drivin' me NUTS!!
Yes it is a poort security practice IF you have something to protect. My system is a simple home system and of course I have limited resources that dictate weather or not I even get a firewall or fileserver. Perhaps someday when I have an old box I can use as a firewall I will set things up that way. Ya work with whatcha got. ;-) So given the above, the problem is still a problem. KevinO wrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 This probably isn't what you want to hear but... A firewall should be a firewall and NOT a file server. I have made a 27 GB tar file on Mandrake 8.0 and ext3 filesystem. Moving large files from box to box was tricky though. rsync seems to be ready for this. I was able to break the 4GB limit (I hit that with NFS going Linux <-> Linux, also with scp) Linux has been supporting large file systems for a while now, but the commands that we use everyday are not all up to speed yet. Yep tried that, it doesn't give you the option to change the file name and assumes its going onto a removable media. So when you say yes to the next volume, it overwrites what it just did. [expert] Hack attack analysis
Well guys... it has been 5 years since somone got in. Re: [expert] How can i copy 8G to an NT machine and keep.....
I haven't followed this entire thread, but if you are bumping into a 2 gig limit, then it sounds like you are running fat16 and not ntfs. IF you are using fat16, then you need to convert the drive to NTFS and I believe that should solve it. I don't think this is a limitation of the old NTFS even. Just a thought. Re: [expert] How can i copy 8G to an NT machine and keep.....
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 A quick question : What filesystem are the files stored in on the Mandrake 8.1 box? I have made a 27 GB tar file on Mandrake 8.0 and ext3 filesystem. Moving large files from box to box was tricky though. rsync seems to be ready for this. I was able to break the 4GB limit (I hit that with NFS going Linux <-> Linux, also with scp) Linux has been supporting large file systems for a while now, but the commands that we use everyday are not all up to speed yet. You did not say where the 8 gigs to be transferred resides. Having >knowledge of the origin of the transfer may help in the answer, afterall, we >are not mindreaders, are we?! I have a LM8.1 samba server being used by a series of cad classes ( i work at a university). In two days they created 5.8Gig of graphics files. The SCSI disk there all on is almost full, say 200Mb left. I've repeatedly asked them to delete any work / scans they no longer want. Have they listned,no. normally the classes don't go over 1G per class. But for some amazing reason they've all been told to produce A2 at 300dpi, one girl had 67 layers in Photoshop, with a single line on most of them. Derrr ( I wouldn't mind but there's nowhere for them to print A2's ) I'm in the process of building a dual pII 333 machine with 6 disk raid 5, dat drive, cd burner. But want to give it a good thrashing before i commit it to its purpose ( never done a software raid yet ) The NT is really my peace of mind just in case something nasty happens. Based on the saying 'Given enough time, everything possible WILL happen.' The NT is a raid 5, with a 20/40 dat drive. doing a copy of all the contents works, but all permissions / groups /owners are lost, if i do a cp -a. I get 'permission denied'. I have read somewhere that it is possible to tar to another machines dat drive using something like tar -cvf //samba/dev/nst0 * but i couldn't get it to work, and as far as i know you can't share a non-block device across the network. I even tried before piping it through gzip, but it still stopped at the magic 2G. So really i'm buggered :o) Mr Smiley ( still smiling, sort of ) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Is there any way to copy 8Gig of files to a nt machine, keeping all ownership/permissions/groups. I've tried taring but it stops at 2G. many thanks Mr Smiley Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
