I run Win4Lin 4 here. Just curious.. what can't you get running? I use
it mostly for the occasional doc that OOo can't open as well as PSP and

Hard Drives are cheap... if it's the other guy buying it. (and those
dang IDE monsters don't fit in my laptop.) I for one would like to be
productive WITH my software not TO my software. Heck with a one year
life and a new version every 6 months, I rarely get a chance to do just
that. In the past I agree the advances were made so fast that you did
have to publish or perish when it came to new software. Now, maybe the
original posters concept has more merit. 9.1 is about to come out and
9.0 is really just starting to get stable. (the bain of 0 versions.) I'm
really not sure what the answer is here. But this I do know. IF
Mandrake is going to be on the Desktop of business everywhere (Which it
is more than qualified to do.), something has to give. It could well be
time to consider the idea of a distro a year. Heck Debian hasn't
released in how many years? OpenBSD releases what every 18 to 24
months? Or maybe a concept like FreeBSD. 3 branches Stable Release and
Current ... or in other terms It works well enough for production. We
think it's ready, and good luck.*grin*

I have created /dev/ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1, set them to 666, then
symlinked ttyUSB1 to /dev/pilot.

In KPilot, I have set the program to use /dev/pilot at 9600 baud.

I hook up the hotsync block to the USB port, push the hotsync button,
the Visor wakes, KPilot wakes, giving a desktop icon, I click it, and
(Log file from KPilot)

Now, in /var/log/messages the following is being recorded:

Feb 10 21:27:29 timmy2 kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter
now disconnected from ttyUSB1

The kernel messages are basically the same whether or not the Visor
syncs.

The problem that I have is that I can't figure out why KPilot syncs or
fails to sync.

Is there something that I am doing/have done/will do wrong? Why does
it seem that I am so close to consistantly syncing yet so far away?

Used 1.2 when mdk9.0 came out and had to ask for my money back, sadly,
as it had great difficulty installing Office 97, wasn't stable, and
couldn't run Visio for beans (that was listed as bronze at the time, the
Codeweavers guys get nothing but kudos from me for even undertaking the
effort).

I tell you, iexplore.exe running in Linux is a jarring sight. And you
know something else, it was blazing fast; faster than any Win2K install
I've ever seen.

Tell us which problems and you might get a useful answer. Some things to
consider:

1) USB devices don't exist in Linux until there's a signal on the bus;
there isn't one with Visor/Clie/&c until you press hotsync.
2) look in the log file after pressing the button and you'll find out
whether the kernel is recognizing that something happened and loading
the proper module without errors. You'll also see what port the thing's
going to show up at.
3) user-space programs won't work until the above is straightened out.

With todays modern hard disks, space is quite cheap (under $5US/Gbyte). How
about a three version install. (4-6GB each and 2 /home partitions on a 40GB
no problems). With jpg's, mp3's, ogg's etc on a seperate disk or backed up to

- Mandrakes upcoming release/ bleeding edge/ whizzbang version.
This is my aim soon as i buy the disk. I think Tom does this well. He has

Unfortunately bleeding edge software is often created for the latest greatest

Someplace under /usr/local. That's because /usr is for stuff that the
system supplies. Your scripts are "local" to your system; thus you
should put them somewhere underneath /usr/local/ /usr/local/sbin would
be a good spot. That Mandrake doesn't seem to use it is really an

You might want to check out the sun java page. There is some
documentation about java that is compiled with the newer gcc, at least
newer than 2.96. Seems that it is broke, and until sun releases a newer

Re: [expert] Mandrake RPM updates

2003-02-10 Thread Brian Schroeder
This is probably a difficult ask. But what I would like to see
is a longer time between versions (eg. 12+ months) for the regular
desktop edition, and a simple, reliable method for updating
packages in the meantime for those who want to (for all those
things that don't qualify for Mandrake's Update facility).

I often grab things from cooker - generally source RPMs - to
install myself. But as time goes by, depencancy issues and library
incompatibilities increase until I give up and simply wait for the
next Mandrake upgrade. It would be nice if this was different.

I'm not really expecting all this to happen, but at least I have
got it off my chest.

Brian.

Having said that, Corporate Server 2.1 is now available, and it is a
server OS. The support timeframe will likely be 3-4 years, possibly
more. I'm not 100% sure on this yet (not my call).

I understand doing updates yourself is a bore and PITA (oh boy do I
know!), and reinstalling a server every 18mos is also a nuisance.
Corporate Server will alleviate this. It will have 12-18mos between
versions, so will be a much slower pace than the main distrib (Mandrake
Linux), and should certainly meet your needs.

There is a PR on the mandrakesoft.com website about it; I don't have
the URL handy at the moment.

No, I have the mandrake rpms for kde 3.1 and with the 2.4.19-24 kernel I have
the same kfmclients error problems (not with the original 9.0 kernel). Also I
can't open any cdrom nor floppy from the removable media icon.

[expert] Radeon 8500LE PBA in MDK9

2003-02-10 Thread Jeferson Lopes Zacco
Hi all.. I can't get any driver (thanks god for the vesa driver!) to
work. I've got a Sapphire 8500LE, and the drivers that come with MDK9
fail with an error that the Rage Theather chip isn't initialized, nad
that the module radeon_drv is unresolved...

I tried the ATI binary drivers , the latest incarnation which is said to
work with PBA cards... it compiles fine ( what a mess ATI did though..
if it's RPM why don't they just offer the drivers pre-compilde for all
the major distros? too lazy for testing anything but RHs?) But even then
the drivers fail if GLX extensions are enabled, the X-server just crash.
It runs fine without GLX - but then , no games, no 3D stuff...

Any thoughts? has someone with a Sapphire card - or other PBA card -
managed to get 3D accleration working in MDK9? I heard people with
Slackware had no problems. I think the problem may be in MDK's kernel or
the Xfree version - ATI seems to have tested their driver in X 4.2.0 only.

TIA

Have you considered win4lin for that need? Not everything works under

HI Anne,

Actually I have tried that and one of those 'things' that didn't work
was networking, and the accounting system software, which is why I was
trying it in the first place. :( I "was" rather hoping it would work
because I hate having to stop what I'm doing cause Winders has to crap.

Sorry to hear that - it's so good when it does work. I haven't really looked
at the network problem at all - our lan is pretty light use except for the
internet access. I avoid using that under windows because of the reduced
security, so I haven't much info on what I can get going and what I can't

As I understand it VMWare will do what I needed Win4Lin to do but at
quite a bit more cost.

H.. I too get kfmclient errors with kde 3.1 (Texstar's rpms) and the
stock 2.4.19 Mandrake kernel. I just installed the 2.4.21-pre4 cooker kernel
on a fresh 9.0 install, and it seems fine so far with kde 3.0.3. I also ran a
standard kernel.org 2.4.20 kernel with the ck preemptive patch, and it
worked perfect with kde 3.0.3, and was noticably snappier than either 2.4.19.
or 2.4.20 without the preeemtive patch. I really like kde 3.1, but that kfm
error thing is annoying. Has anyone figured it out yet? Maybe the Texstar
rpms are causing it in my case, and I should try the Mandrake version.

I have been reading the Wrox book on Perl and the O'Reilly book on Apache
but I'm having a lot of trouble getting the examples and exercises to work
on a Mandrake system. I have also read the Apache documentation but that
hasn't helped either. I'm beginning to feel like a real imbecile.

What I am trying to do is get a cgi script to execute under apache.

I have two pages defined under this domain. A default page with is
displayed as it should be when a browser is pointed to the domain name. And
a cgi page which generates the following error: "You don't have permission
to access /cgi-bin/cgihello.plx on this server."

The permissions on the cgi-bin directory are: drwxr-xfr-x
The permissions on the cgi program are: -rwxr-xr-x

As you can deduct from the VirtualHost block for this domain below, the
htdocs directory and the cgi-bin directory are on the same level. I
considered that maybe the cgi-bin directory should be under the htdocs
directory but nothing I read seemed to have such a restriction.

ServerName www.domainname.com
DocumentRoot /usr/www/vtest/htdocs
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/www/vtest/cgi-bin/

Options +ExecCGI Indexes MultiViews
AddHandler cgi-script cgi plx pl
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

I added the AddHandler directive because the Wrox book was using .plx as the
extension and I thought maybe it wasn't executing the file.

I wondered if the first line of the cgi script (#!/usr/bin/perl) was not
pointing to the perl program in Mandrake but I looked there and and that
seems to be correct.

I tried putting the ScriptAlias inside the Directory block but that gave me
an error when I gracefully restated apache.

Apache is version 1.3 running on version 8 of Mandrake. I would really
appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance, Carter.

9.1b3, KDE 3.0.3 was fine with a 2.4.20-2 kernel.

good thing it never made it into space...

If it followed the trekkie version, it'd end up being destroyed, partially
or fully at each outting (movie).

So what happened to the Enterprise??

it goes on and off and on and off step away from the machine.

this only shows you user space processes, and

it's being used by the kernel, as NFS is a kernel-level network daemon
(ew, icky).

use free instead, or top will show you kernel memory vs user memory.

sounds like a bug, but not sure if it's kernel-level or has something to
do with user-space proggies in nfs-utils. I'd start by upgrading
nfs-utils to the latest version you can find.

this is getting to be very common with testing and contrib channel
stuff... Your best bet is to:

urpmi libgd-devel and a handful of other devel rpms that I can't
remember right now but will become clear as the next step fails...

download the src.rpm for the nagios, nagios-www, and nagios-plugins
packages and sudo rpm --rebuild *.rpm in that directory.

find the line beginning PATH =
put this under it:

source .bash_profile in the shell you will run java from.

[expert] Weird NFS/Memory Issue-System Locking up

2003-02-10 Thread Tru64 User
When I issue a showmount -e "nodename" from a client,
the server ("nodename") locks up completely, and top
shows high memory usage (893k out og 900k).

Suprisingly enough, "ps -aux" does not show any single
process utilizing much memory...
ps -aux|wc -l ==80processes, all either 0.0 or 0.1%
utilization, which amounts to less than 8% overall

Where is this extra memory utlized?
Why is it not showing up?
Why is it only doing this after a showmount -e from a
client?

Only way to get out of this is a complete reboot!!!
I am running Mandrake Linux 8.2 Kernel 2.4.28-6mdk
(default kernel, no modifications done)

would appreciate any pointers.

Have you considered win4lin for that need? Not everything works under it, but
if your does the feeling of release is great. You run your windows app
without having to re-boot. You get the windows functionality for that
purpose, but with linux stability - and if it does go down, you can exit
without bringing down your whole workstation.

It's not free, but there's a money-back guarantee, I understand.

well (i need the keyboard to be as close to windows as
possible for my co-workers)? do you know what config
file i should edit (i don't want to reinstall a
nicely-working 9.0 all over again) to get
shift-numeric selecting text?

what i do not want is shift and numlock acting like
shift and caps (cancelling each other out).

text. any ideas?

It's just so easy to add postgres to your system.. that it should not
be a problem that it does not support MySQL

I am Australian and I do use SQL-Ledger to support our needs in
calculating the GST, It's actually excellent for the AUD GST

There has been some talk about MySQL on the SQL-Ledger mailing list.. I
wouldn't bother..
