Re: [expert] samb file permission

2003-03-06 Thread Norman Zhang
Hi,

Sorry. My mistake. Users were trying to move files that they don't have
permission into the folders. Copying files or creating files does work. But
they still get the prompt saying "You might not be able to access the files
you created. Do you want to continue?" Is there a fix for this? I added

force create mode = 0660
force directory mode = 0770

but problem still persists.

What does `ls -l /srv/proj` look like?

There is no samba-2.2.7a-8.1mdk package. Anyways, use urpmi... then you
don't have to worry about anything. =)

You also didn't indicate which version you're using... *all* of the
updated samba packages are 2.2.7a-8.1mdk so that doesn't really help
us track down which mdk version you're using.

However when I checked /proc/scsi/scsi, the disk is listed in there. How do
I remove it so I can proceed with adding a new device?

host: scsi1 channel: 00 id: 03 lun: 00

I already removed from the array. Do I need dismount something? Please give

2003-06-20 Thread Norman Zhang
Hi,

I tried to remove a hot-swap RAID1 SCSI disk from the chassis. So I issued
the following command

> raidsetfaulty /dev/md4 /dev/sdd6
> raidhotremove /dev/md4 /dev/sdd6

But got the following message,

/dev/md4: cannot hot-remove disk: disk is not in array!

So I presume the disk is offline or something, and issued the following
command

echo "scsi remove-single-device 1 0 3 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi

When I checked the newly created /proc/scsi/scsi, the device is still listed
in the file. I checked /proc/mdstat and saw the following

md4: active raid1 scsi/host1/bus0/target2/lun0/part6[0]
 521984 blocks [2/1][U_]

How do I remove the device, so I can add a new device to reconstruct the
array again? Please give me a few pointers?

Norman

I have always set OE to read and send in PLAIN text. So I don't realize the
MIME part. But the following post doesn't seem to pickup MIME either... I
will try Mozilla or KMail to see if the MIME part is visible.

I need wb_group feature from the squid-2.5.STABLE3-1mdk.i586.rpm. wb_group
allows proxy access per NT_Global_Group. It takes advantage of winbind from
Samba. I managed to get this working by installing the previous
squid-2.5.STABLE2-2mdk.i586.rpm (from cooker-no dependency error). Compiled
squid-2.5.STABLE3 myself, copied wb_group to /usr/lib/squid. But that's a
workaround. I was hoping the new cooker rpm would solve the problem.

[expert] Duplex Printing

2002-10-15 Thread Norman Zhang

I have setup HP 2200D on the LM 9.0 box. For all duplex print jobs the
reverse side is always printed upside down. (i.e., flipped on the short
edge) I cannot find a way to configure this in KDE3. Is there a way I can
configure it to flip on the long edge?

On my machine Mozilla just closes automatically. By selecting those key
sequence. At first I thought I clicked the close button by accident. But I
could repeat that by going through the Preferences... and mozilla quits.
Obviously it is not reproducible on your machine. So the bug is more subtle.
I did open mozilla mail and added some newsgroups and changed my email
address before selecting \Edit\Preferences...\Mail & Newsgroups\Addressing.
I will tried again and report this to bugzilla. Sorry that I wasted your

Hi Norman, my advice, from a not so expert linux user
is, DO NOT use telnet, it's very insecure for sending
info. Just work with ssh, it's a lot better. I've been
working on ssh from my work to my home, and it was no
trouble. If you want to install ssh, go to the

It has a nice tutorial about installing ssh.

to share with me their experience? Is something block by default (for

Re: [expert] printer driver in samba

2003-01-15 Thread Norman Zhang
Hi Buchan and All,

: Did you join the domain? I assume it's a windows (NT or 2k?)
: domain?

Yes it is joined to the NT PDC. wbinfo -t says secret is good.

: The default is "\", comment it out rather, as it's quite
: difficult to get it right (you must have the quotes). Also,
: for ACLs etc, it might be worthwhile disabling 'winbind use
: default domain', at least to test ...

I think the mismatched winbind separator is the cause. I made write_list and
print_admin @"MyDomain\Print Admins" and the winbdin separator to "\".

: This looks a bit suspect ... the one below for your hp5p loks
: right
: > print command = lp -d %p -o raw %s; rm -f %s

Thanks I copied that from Samba Essentials for Windows Administrator 8( But
I'm able to print on the LM9.0 box.

: > [hp5p]
: > comment = HP LaserJet 5P--Show Room
:
: You should use /var/spool/samba here unless you reall know what
: you are doing. Anyway, in most cases you don't need per-printer
: config, unless your printing defaults (in [printers]) are wrong.

Thanks I changed that as well. I now successfully uploaded the W2K drivers
from a W2K workstation. But can't upload NT4.0 drivers. I tried on a NT4.0
workstation it says they are uploaded, but I checked the directory. It's
empty. Do you know why? Also I can't upload drivers by browsing server
properties in printers. I can only do it by selecting the printer then add
new driver. The books tells me otherwise.

Also the print job from a windows machine prints out a page with some PJL
commands, then a page of the print out and then some garbage. I assume this
is driver's fault. Can it be because I have a Raw device setup in CUPS? They
don't offer the printer driver (HP5P) when I choose add printer. I needed to
select RAW device initially?

I hope I'm not getting too annoying. And thank you in advance for your
patience and expert advice.

Regards,
Norman

[expert] chmod reset

2002-04-17 Thread Norman Zhang

Hi,

I am using 8.2. I can change the directory permission using chmod (as root
for the /home/userA), but after an 1/2 hour or when I log out as root the
permission resets itself. Does anyone know the cause of this strange
behavior?

I also saw another strange behavior since 8.1 (and it is still there in 8.2)
that is my clock moves backward by at least couple hours after the screen
saver comes up. I was okay with 8.0.

[expert] disk quota

2002-09-18 Thread Norman Zhang

Hi,

I tried to set disk quota on LM8.2. But when I typed quota -u, I get

Quota: Can't initialize quota on /dev/hda8: Function not implemented
Disk quotas for user root (uid 0): none

but /etc/mtab says

/dev/hda8 /home ext3 grpquota, usrquota 0 2

Does LM8.2 kernel has quota support compiled in by default? Is this
neceesary for samba support?

When I tried edquota -u user I get,

So this happens with 8.2 too. I would like to narrow this down, so I can
submit appropriate bug report to right people. Is this a Mandrake, VMware or

from the top two windows are so tiny and fuzzy that I can make anything out

during installation, Mandrake was able to identified the video card as
VMware virtual driver. Is there a way to reset this without reboot the
9.2RC2?

I've found a solution from vmware list. Thought that I should update it here
as well. VMware SVGA drive does not restore proper hardware state after
exiting from SVGA mode. I need to boot to nonfb, and the problem goes away.
Hope this helpful to others too.

###Updated Text for Wiki (Please remove this line)###

*Running LM as a Guest OS*

*Problem:* My host OS is W2K Pro SP4 and am running VMware version 4.02
build-5592. 9.2RC2 would display the text properly if I boot into console
mode. startx would display properly too. But after I exit from the
Xwindows session, the text mode would be messed up. I get 4 tiny windows

Without it Xwindows won't start. Also during installation, Mandrake was
able to identified the video card as VMware virtual driver. Is there a
way to reset this without reboot the 9.2RC2?

*Solution:* (from Petr Vandrovec) Mandrake should have created "nonfb"
choice in your LILO. Boot this, instead of default configuration -
VMware SVGA driver does not restore proper hardware state when exiting
from SVGA mode.

*Follow-up:* Thanks. That seems to solve the problem. However I do see the
following warning

=(WW) VMWARE(0): Failed to setup write-combing range
(0xf600,0x1000)=

Is this critical?

*Answer:* (from Peter Vandrovec) No, it is normal. Virtual CPU does not
support MTRR registers, and so X server complains. You can ignore it.

as VMware. Perhaps you may want to change that too? Thanks.

[expert] 9.2RC2 CD Error

2003-09-24 Thread Norman Zhang
Hi,

While trying to install 9.2RC2 on my box, I get

Loading alt0...
Loading alt0/all.rdz.isolinux: Disk error 80, AX=4280, drive 9F
Boot failed: press a key to retry

Is this due to a corrupt image? But I was able to install 9.2RC2 on another
box using same set of CDs. The other CDROM even has a slower read speed.

I removed .kde/ .qt/ and all files in /root/tmp and /tmp but haven't tried
reinstalling kdebase as you recommended. Will try that after office hours.

May I ask use another question? I don't know if it attributed to the KDE
corruption. I'm seeing lots Samba sessions opened on my box, memory is taken
up quickly. But no swap is used. Is there a way I can troubleshoot this
further. I'm using the free command. When I do /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart,
I see smb fails to stop but can start. Please help.

This is exactly what I am seeing. /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart would cause
smbd trying to stop some arbitrary pids. For some of them I get warnings
that they are not found. And shutdown fails. This doesn't happen every time
I restart smbd. It seems to happen only when lots users are connected to
Samba and memory are exhausted. May I ask how much RAM people use for ~100
users Samba servers? Do you have any recommendations that I troubleshoot
this further? I'm going to increase the RAM to 1GB today.

Thanks for your reminder. I'm using 9.0 here. Would it be safer if I upgrade
to 9.1/9.2? I am not sure if the recent 9.0 kernel erratum has ACL XFS

Again thanks for your suggestions. I too prefer a clean install. But I have
never done an upgrade by retaining /home partition or other volumes. So if I
just format and reinstall 9.1/9.2 on other volumes, will the data on /home
be retained? /home is running XFS (I'm not sure if this related), will the
new kernel recognized the older XFS volume? Also I'm running software RAID
on my disks. Are there other things that I should look for?

I asked this question earlier. Apparently kernel-source is not included in

contain it.

Thanks. I just verified it is 2003 in /etc/services.

I followed the steps given in README.RPM

1. mailbox_transport = lmtp:$myhostname
   (/etc/postfix/main.cf)
2. lmtp cmd="lmtpd" listen="lmtp" prefork=0 (/etc/cyrus.conf)
3. add "lmtp_admins: cyruslmtp" at the bottom of /etc/cyrus.conf
4. useradd "cyruslmtp" with password "testing123"
5. create /etc/postfix/lmtp_sasl_pass for root:root with 600
   permissions. File contents are
  $myhostnamecyruslmtp:testing123
6. postmap /etc/postfix/lmtp_sasl_pass
   postconf -e "lmtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes"
   postconf -e "lmtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/lmtp_sasl_pass"
   postconf -e "lmtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous"

but I'm still getting

lmtpd[1822]: connection from mail.rd.arkonnetworks.com [207.34.136.7]
postfix/lmtp[1821]: 594C018000A0: to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,

I think I found the cause to the problem. I need to use saslpasswd2 for

Sorry for all the noise. I found that 9.2 is using saslauthd by default. The
information is provided in /etc/imapd.conf.

sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd
sasl_mech_list: PLAIN

I do have /etc/imapd.conf as it came with LM 9.2, but not smtpd.conf. I
guess smtpd.conf is indeed replaced by main.cf.
