[expert] unable to find postscript driver

2003-06-24 Thread Simon Oosthoek
Hi,

via google I came accross a posting to the expert mailinglist about cups
being unable to find a postscript driver.

The header was:
   From: JOHAM,DAVID (HP-Boise,ex1)
Subject: [expert] "Unable to find the Postscript driver" when setting up
 printer in MDK9.1
   Date: 28 May 2003 20:53:36 -
(I'll skip the contents)

I get the same when configuring a postscript printer on our network. We have
a HP LJ 5000N, which is kind of slow when printing through PCL5/6. It can
print postscript just fine, so that would be a speed improvement I think.

The cups drivers and cups itself are installed, is there another package
that includes the postscript drivers? It's not obvious to me at least...

Cheers

Simon

[expert] Cant Write Boot Floppies

2003-06-14 Thread Simon Naish
Hi,

I'm trying to create a boot floppy for my mdk9.1 system. However, it stalls, saying
there's not enough space to copy
mkinitrd or saying that the floppy is mounted. Pain in the arse this, any ideas?
mkbootfloppy gives the same response as
the control center (being that that is what the center is running eh!).

Cheers all

1.5 years is "old" in the software world. It's old for Mandrake and its
old for MS. Upgrading to a new KDE doesn't necessarily get you anything
new or better or do your job any better. If a specific *new* feature
is required you may have to upgrade due to it needing other package
upgrades and so on and so on. Should Mandrake upgrade the whole OS for
you? oh wait they did 8.2, 9.0, 9.1B.

your right and maybe they should. But I think you would need a much
bigger company to support 3 years worth of distro's even if they were
slowed down. And how do you define support? Patching the version you
purchased/downloaded or providing new versions as they become available.

I don't think Mandrake should be responsible for slowing down other
peoples projects. Many users would jump ship the second Mandrake
dropped from the bleeding edge.

think so, you can apply the camparison to any number of products
services, whatever. If a warranty is implied or supplied it is for the
product supplied and presumably paid for. My vehicle or dishwasher or whatever has
a support period and so does Mandrake's product. Its just that the
support is for what you bought or downloaded. If the only way to fix a
major security flaw or bug or defect/recall (staying with vehicles) is to
replace a core component then you might have an argument for Mandrake
providing you with a new KDE.

Why change to a new program version in the first place if you are happy
using a old os version? You would advocate That mandrake should build
packages for for all of their old versions? KDE 3.1 for v6 maybe?

Maybe you could build it? I'm not saying mandrake shouldn't support old
versions, but the old distro did not ship with the intention of being
brought up the the latest level of every package. My Explorer came with
a 5L V8, they now come with a 4.6L V8, should Ford provide me with a

What video card are you running? What kernel are you trying to boot? Is

Right, success, due entirely to flacycads. Your list of modules is spot on and
definitely works mate. Brilliant. This is what sensors at the CLI now reports

Whereas b4 I got nothing below the second memory module section, I now get all this
data about the system. OK so it might not be quite correct yet (havent figured out the
tuning bit yet) and doesnt seem to be able to find the system fan (the power supply
fan doesnt send info back ) But I dont care. I've been trying to get this since mdk
8.0 . The magic missing bits were these two lines in /etc/modules (or /etc/rc.local)

modprobe i2c-isa
modprobe via686a

for some reason - probably to do with some other hardware or module getting in the
way, sensors-detect never ever suggested these bits to me.Still I dont care now. Any
ideas how to make sense of this lot? /etc/sensors.conf yeah? Anyone got an example,
I've had a look, and ninety percent seems irrelevant to my mobo, or am I just being
overly hopeful??

Again thanks flacycads, much appreciated.

Re: [expert] lm_sensors on gigabyte ga-7zxe

2003-01-28 Thread Simon Naish
Flacycads, chees mate. I'm at work so I cant try this, but I never got this line
ever...

 modprobe via686a

from doing sensors-detect. I did have a sensors section in gkrellm, but not any more,
since I tried to get clever and remove all the relevant modules and reinstall them.
Now I get zip about temps. Yes I definitely have lm_sensors instaled, sensors-detect
and sensors both exist. I just cant seem to get it to work - your determination to
help me get this working is _much_ appreciated mate!!!

As for the stuff that should go in rc.local that isn't there, well thats the thing,
thats what sensors-detect is telling me to put there - nothing, zip, null. I've
literally copied the output from the terminal. I promise I'm as stumped as you over
this one.

What I intend to do this evening is whack your suggested lines on my box - I'll try
them first to see if it goes bang ;o) - then reboot and have another go. I'll let you
know how it goes. Again thanks so much for your efforts!

Re: [expert] lm_sensors on gigabyte ga-7zxe

2003-01-27 Thread Simon Naish
I'm afraid I've tried that, and still no joy. lsmod shows everything loaded that
should be according to the results of sensors-detect and yet I get no temps. I just
tried rmmod'ing all the listed modules and starting again. With a different outcome. I
get a slightly different list of stuff to add (an extra module and line of code for
modules.conf) and now when I run sensors I get absolutely no reference to temperatures
at all, just the memory. Seems fiddling with it is just breaking it more. So has
anyone got a definitive list of modules that does work with an ABIT KT-7 RAID mobo?
I'd be greatful ;o)

Sometimes, a chip is available both through the ISA bus and an I2C bus.
ISA bus access is faster, but you need to load an additional driver module
for it. If you have the choice, do you want to use the ISA bus or the
 I2C/SMBus (ISA/smbus)? ISA

To make the sensors modules behave correctly, add these lines to either

No luck here chaps, followed the instructions, pasted stuff (u don't seem to need to
paste into rc.local, the sensors daemon is already running?) Anyway a service sensors
restart followed by sensors -s then sensors (or GKRELLM or whatever) gives this
output...

#service sensors restart
Shutting down sensord: [ OK ]
Starting sensord: [ OK ]
# sensors -s
# sensors
max1617-i2c-0-18
Adapter: SMBus Via Pro adapter at 5000
Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter
temp: +0°C (min = +4°C, max = +0°C)
remote_temp:
  +0°C (min = +0°C, max = +60°C)ALARM (N/A)

eeprom-i2c-0-50
Adapter: SMBus Via Pro adapter at 5000
Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter
Memory type:SDRAM DIMM SPD
SDRAM Size (MB):256

eeprom-i2c-0-51
Adapter: SMBus Via Pro adapter at 5000
Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter
Memory type:SDRAM DIMM SPD
SDRAM Size (MB):256

Which is cool, its all correct except for the Mr Frosty CPU and System temps ;0) Its
not hot, but it sure aint freezing neither!

So any ideas anyone? This has been bugging me forever - its not massively important
but its one of those things I'd really like to get working. By the way the BIOS shows
real temps, so the sensors arent hosed.

Cheers all
Si.

Bascule, you probably dont want a question in answer to yours, but I never quite
managed to get lm_sensors working. I have an abit KT7-RAID board (via c100 chipset)
and followed the setup procedure without a problem, but never got any temps showing up
just memory usage. Any ideas where I might be going wrong??

Afraid I have no idea what th temp is, its not fahrenheit is it? - totally daft idea
but there you go.

Unable to create IO Slave
klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_audiocd'

Which is a pain in the butt ;o)

Any body gon any clues/ experince fixing this prob. There seems to be alot of people

Cheers Todd, excellent,

I figured it was a kinda generic run everything in here script, but
being completely knackered I couldnt figure out where (Duuh!), and it
would turn out to be embarrasingly obvious - note to self, stop
trying to figure it out when you're too tired to make coffee!

So the next question is, do I need it? May sound dumb but its
breaking KDE2 for users, but not root. In fact it doesnt seem to get
run by root at all. If I change $PATH back in root then spawn a new
shell, it doesnt get stuck at the beginning of $PATH. Yet root runs
KDE3 fine, because as far as I can tell /opt/kde3/bin/startkde3 sets
PATH="/opt/kde3/bin:$PATH" before running
/opt/kde3/bin/startkde which is what does the real business. So if I
lose kde3.sh wont the users be able to run both KDE3 and KDE2 without
KDE2 using all the wrong calls??

Also is it not possible to get KDE2 to access KDE3 libraries if it
needs them for stuff like k3b which looks fantastic :o), if not I've
got KDE3 to run it in I know!

Cheers again for any help

[expert] Mandrake8.2 KDE3.04 startkde issue

2003-01-16 Thread Simon Naish
OK so I've now figured out what is making this happen. The $PATH of users is being
changed into

  /opt/kde3/bin/:$PATH

by a script called kde.sh in

/etc/profile.d/

Before any choice of WM/Desktop has been made by the user. This means of course that
all the KDE3 apps get called before the KDE ones. So on calling startkde you get KDE2
scripts running KDE3 apps. This is cos the startkde call is explicitly
/usr/bin/startkde which starts KDE2.

The thing is I cant find what calls this kde3.sh to futs the $PATH of users.

Any one know?

Cheers

[expert] Mandrake8.2 and KDE3.04

2003-01-16 Thread Simon Naish
I've just tried adding KDE3.04 to my Mandrake 8.2 installation and have a bit of a
problem.

Managed to install everything ok, its all gone into the /opt directory. Managed to
sort all the dependencies out.

My problem is that the KDE choice of Windowmanager gives KDE3.04, as does the KDE3
choice. Except for route. Route gets KDE2 for the KDE windowmanager choice and KDE3.04
for the KDE3 windowmanager choice as it should.

This is alot more than just a pain in the backside, as its corrupted everthing in
there. Does anyone have a clue as to where I should look and what to change,
presumably its to do with the startup scripts in /etc but I cant find the start script
that is used by kdm.

Any help would be gratefully received. I just want everything working like root does.
Is it a permissions thing??

Cheers loads

[expert] Nautilus symbol stripped binaries

2003-01-01 Thread Simon A Watts
Nautilus is regularly producing core dumps in my (non-root) user
account. This occurs most often when logging in, though has happened at
other times (when Nautilus was not being used directly, other than for
the desktop).

I have tried to analyse these files, and report using BugBuddy, but the
MDK binaries (and those produced when rebuilding the SPRMS) are
stripped, and so the trace does not give any useful information.

I have been trying to see if there where any obvious options for
rebuilding without symbol stripping, but cannot find anything obvious
(rpm --rebuild).

How can I rebuild the SRPM leaving the symbols intacted?

System: MDK 9.0 (u/g from 8.2), dual-athlon, 512MB+4GB swap. Running
Gnome w. Nautilus

[expert] tightvnc and openssh - channel 2: open failed

2002-12-17 Thread Simon Ree
Having a problem with tightvnc and openssh.

my laptop: 192.168.0.100
sshd server: 192.168.0.203
vncserver: 192.168.0.203

[simon@localhost simon]$ ssh -L 5901:192.168.0.203:5900 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Last login: Tue Dec 17 17:43:10 2002 from 192.168.0.100
[system@sales system]$

When I open vncviewer and point it to localhost:1 it bombs with this
error:

[system@sales system]$ channel 2: open failed: connect failed:
 Connection refused

Works great when not using a ssh tunnel. ssh works for everything
else. Any thoughts?

RE: [expert] Nvidia driver chaos! HEAVENS!!!

2002-12-17 Thread Simon Naish
Hey, ace, lots of points of view on this, just thought I'd get back to everyone, my
initial faded memory of 6000fps _was_ wrong, its about 6000 frames in 5 secs, sorry
oops, only a factor of 5 out eh!

However I was pretty much lead to believe from reading all sorts of stuff about it
when first trying to get decent frame rates under Linux that the nv drivers couldnt do
hardware acceleration. Now noone to my knowledge has said they cant do software 3d
acceleration, or else they wouldnt run any opengl at all, but the real boost in 3d
performance is from hardware acceleration. And this would be in line with the
differing figures of the nv compared to the nvidia driver.

Its the same deal under m$, alot of older opengl enabled games (Grand Prix Legends
prings to mind) allow you to choose software acceleration, ie using the cpu rather
than the gpu) if you dont have 3d accelerating hardware. The problem is the framerate
is diabolical, and thats with all the eye candy switched off on a 4 year old game,
with a 2 year old cpu.

Hope this helps.

Si

sheesh, have to check, maybe 6000 was rather hi :o) sorry - blame my poor memory, but
I've definitely had way more than 2000, though it was running blackbox wm, with an
overclocked gainward ti42000 with 128mb of ram. Did the test a fair while ago when i
got the card, and fell off my chair. I run the unreal tournament demo with all the
graphics settings on full and real physics with no frame rate glitching, and I've only
got a 1.3GHz athlon cpu. Top graphics card.

Re: [expert] Find command

2002-12-11 Thread Simon Naish
You'll need to use grep as well as find

something like

find -name "*.log" | grep "@" > list.txt

but check out the grep man page as I always have to (short circuit in my head over the
exact syntax of grep sometimes ;o) )

This should give you every line that has an @ in it in all the log files and redirect
into list.txt

later

Hi,

Try running it from my directions, it will automatically
rename the new kernel to -XXcustom. You will end up with a
complete new kernel and all the drakboot entries. I have
tried using your approach and it never left me with a
usable system. The method I listed is what I have been
using in travels in cooker land and it has never failed me

Re: [expert] kernel recompile

2002-11-07 Thread Simon Ree
Did you try to rebuild your kernel from source? I had no
luck at all on my laptop till I followed this procedure.

/usr/src/kernel-2.4.19-Xmdk/

save .config
make mrproper
restore .config if you want
make *config
make bzImage modules
make modules_install install

Should allways work. Try it. Also, if your laptop support
acpi, download the new -18mdk kernel and enable acpi
support. Seems to be working for me.

Re: [expert] MDK 9 & Sony Clié

2002-11-06 Thread Simon Ree
I have found that binding to ttyUSB1 will not work until the
port is created and destroyed once prior to hotsync and not
before pilot-link has had an initial connection.

My method after clean install of Mandrake (only has to be
done once)

1. command line
2. plug in and press hotsync
3. let the device time out, clear error on device
4. press hotsync
5. pilot-xfer -p ttyUSB1 -b /home/me/clie/backup

After a successful backup (hopefully), run jpilot and set
the port up in preferences /dev/ttyUSB1. Close jpilot,
press sync on the device and open jpilot and press sync...
should work.

I have found on all syncs after the initial sync that jpilot
will not communicate with my clie until the device times out
once.

1. press sync on the device/cradle and let it time out
2. press sync again and then open jpilot and press sync

Support should be better than this but the what can you do.

Let me know if it works for you. This method works on my 3
different machines.

Re: [expert] trouble with wireless card

2002-11-04 Thread Simon Ree
Yes,

Make sure your wireless card is plugged in.

command line
su
cardctl ident

That will display your cards manfid. Just change the entry
in the hermes conf file to the proper manfid. The
description of the card does not matter, call it whatever
you like.

ie:

card "Netgear MA something or other"
  manfid 0x0156, 0x0002
  bind "orinoco_cs"

What model? My clie T415 works fine with the USB cradle.
What does dmesg say when you plug it in and hit the

Re: [expert] trouble with wireless card

2002-11-01 Thread Simon Ree
Hi,

Your ENC_KEY has to be hex to work (could be wrong). If you
can not get the info to stay in the ifcfg-ethx scripts you
can pass the ESSID and ENC key via iwconfig.

command line
su
iwconfig ethx essid youressid
iwconfig ethx enc yourhexkey

If that works for you create a shell script with those
commands to save from typing them over and over again.
However, your ifcfg-ethx should not change on a pcmcia or
network restart, at least it does not on my system (Mandrake
9).

[expert] How-To for an NTL supplied USB cable modem

2002-11-01 Thread Simon Naish
Hi,

Im trying to set up my dads Mandrake 8.2/Win98 box, he recently went and got himself
an NTL connection, but none of the standard net wizards include setting up a USB cable
modem, and I cant find much to help after a look through the Linux USB pages. Has
anyone had any experience of setting this kind of thing up? or know where to ind some
decent docs on the subject?

Cheers

I had many of the same problems and never managed to get the
wlang drivers to work with my Linksys wpc11 card. Binding
the card to orinoco_cs works great with minimal set up and
works with your MA401.

Uninstall wlang
Install the wireless tools package from your distro cd.
Copy the attached hermes.conf file to etc/pcmcia
service pcmcia restart
service network restart
mcc &

Reconfigure your network connections, you should now have
your card detected. You can set the WIRELESS_ options on
one of the configurations panels but they get tossed
whenever you make a subsequent change, so I manually set
them in the ifcfg-ethX file.

To manually set the options edit your
network script:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX (X being your eth
number)

Add the following entries if you need them:

WIRELESS_ESSID="yourAP"
WIRELESS_ENC_KEY="whatever your 128bit key may be"

service network restart

and you should be on your way, hope this helps. Your cards
manfid may be different to the one in my hermes.conf file.
Just run > cardctl ident from the command line to get your
cards specific manfid and edit the hermes.conf file. This
is the only method that >I< have been able to get to work
with my cards and I have tried many a method. If someone
knows exactly how to do this any easier I would love to
know.

Yes but the set up file emu10k.conf may be different, setting the front speakers to
the other phase.

RE: [expert] Mandrake 9.0 Questions

2002-10-08 Thread Simon Naish

ok re. sound with left right channels causing bass probs, if this is a soundblaster
live! card they had a problem with a lot of them having the left and right channels
having different phase (creative got the wiring wrong) in the card! So you need to
wire them wrong to get them to work. But , and heres the thing, some of them are fine.

Linux being Linux, this is taken account of in what is fed to the card, it expects
them to be out of phase so it swaps the phase of one of the channels for you (saving
you making weird leads). To change this behaviuor there is a file called emu10k.conf
(this name refers to the name of the chip oin the card) in /etc. It lists a huge
number of extra options including playing with the phase of the front speaker output,
the relative level of front and rear speakers etc.

I suspect your card is one of the ones not effected by this problem, which would
account for the card having sounded ok b4 or on different os, the standard setup file
may be what has changed. Play with the settings for phase and restart your sound
server. Hope this helps.

Re: [expert] are opera-users ?

2002-10-01 Thread Simon

OK Hans,
I have on my machine libpng2-1.0.12-2mdk (the original file from mdk81) and
libpng3-1.2.4-3.1mdk. Both coexist without any probs at all (they have
different enough names for all the files that make them up). Both were
installed from mdk rpms. I cant guarantee that it'll sort out your opera
probs, but if you dont have that libpng2 library opera probably wont work
properly anyway.

Hope this helps some

Re: [expert] are opera-users ?

2002-10-01 Thread Simon Naish

hans,
let me check it out on my machine at home this evening, I'm sure that opera needs
libpng2. And that mdk8.2 didnt ship with libpng2, but libpng3, and that the work
around was to take libpng2 and install that off the mdk8.1 disks. I'll need to check
at home, but I think they coexist on my machine. If you arent sure wait and I'll check
what versions of libpng are currently on my system. It should give you a definitive
answer as I have all the stuff working on my 82 box -(OT, makes me not convinced about
upgrading to 90, it sooo good).

Hang in there, I'll try to post back by 9:00pm my time.

Strange, I'm running mdk82 with opera 6.1, no probs. Have you got libpng2 installed
(find it on mdk81, and poss mdk80 disks) . As I remember this being a prob at some
point - although I would expect it to be a 'show stopper' - ie the prog wouldnt start.
I have no probs connecting through junkbuster, so all I can suggest is recheck those
preferences :o( one more time(Alt-p). I am using he dynamic library version of opera,
maybe download this lighter version and give it a try?

Re: [expert] Java Upgrade issues

2002-09-10 Thread Simon Naish

Most probably you'll find that you've got jikes installed - its the ibm java compiler.
Its very fast but only compatible with java 1.1

do

locate javac

it'll probably say
/usr/bin
check the file, if u have jikes installed, then this will be a script to run jikes
with the command javac (really really annoying!).

OK go to the directory u installed the real java installation to. In there will be a
directory called bin. In there are all the executables that you can call or that java
might use to execute/compile/compress/decompress/debug code with the 1.3.1 version.
The problem is alot of these names have been used by jikes as scripts in the
directory /usr/bin. You have to lose all those scripts (major drag!) or uninstall
jikes. (I'd check they were gone anyway).

Next check for another real java sdk like 1.1, and for a symbolic link for it called
java. If you have this just remake the link pointing to the new sdk. Otherwise put the
java/bin directory in your path in ~/.bashrc.

Mandrake forum or user site (sorry dont remember which) do a guide to a proper java
installation, including getting it working for all the major browsers, however they
dont mention this jikes stuff, I found out using trial and error - the javac --version
still returning 1.1 is a real giveaway though!

Good luck, hope this helps

this is what isn't obvious. I dont have a network at home, but I dont want to have to
call my Linux box localhost.localdomain . I'd totally given up in Mandrake - its
about the third thing you choose in a Slackware install - I couldn't find what file
really held the hostname.

I'd figured out the /etc/hosts file ages ago, but it does nothing on its own - except
bugger everything if you take replace the localhost entry. Finally I've given my
machine its own name which remains after a hard reboot and everything else still
appears to work.

Thanks loads everyone, been following this thread since the get go hoping the last
piece[s] in the puzzle would appear, and they did... /etc/sysconfig/network

...of course I've got to find something else busted to fix now ;-)

OK fair enough, but this is covered in the Mandrake Reference Manual, under the
chapter heading:-
Using The Command Line
Section:-
File Handling Utilities
Command:-
mv: Moving or Renaming Files.

Maybe this information would have been more useful to a newbie than
just mv

(or even go to the linux-mandrake site and click documentation, then select
your language (might really help!) and Reference Manual.)

as the command doesn't really cover the important bit, where to find this stuff out
for yourself. As 'experts' - I dont include myself as an expert per se, but I have
played about with Linux for a while etc, and am a developer using Linux every day at
work, and prefer Mandrake at home to any other distro/OS.

The point is this newbie has asked a good question. mv isnt immediately obvious, but
its not necessarily the best question to have asked. That would have been, 'where do I
discover how to use the command line interface in a nicely formated way?' As experts
this should be the first response. Not only are we who are on this list purporting to
be able to solve serious problems, but also point people in the right direction to
help themselves where appropriate.

This isnt in any way an attempt to put peoples efforts down, I wouldnt be on the list
if I didnt rate it, I'm not on any others as this ones so useful :). However much I
appreciate the whole 'we're experts dont bother us with nonsense questions' argument,
I cant help feeling it doesnt help the community to flame newbies asking what are, to
them expert questions. Dont forget the comand line is no longer the way new users and
people generally perceive Linux, kde or gnome or fluxbox or whatever is. Thus to Joe
Bloggs the CLI is truly a daunting place, which only experts understand. Makes sense
to ask the experts when its put like that.

Of course we should answer, but also educate, and help that education by doing more
than answering such a 'simple' question with a lowest common denominator answer.

Peace.

Try GTKtalog (think thats the right spelling ) it's probably the one that Richie has
seen. You just slap the cd in and let it do its thing. It will look through zips and
RPMs to get a omplete list of files, so unless you have a long long time to wait dont
put those distro disks in. I made this mistake ;-| doh! It took about 45 minutes to
read the disk, but it seemed like a fine effort to reproduce the contents. That was a
while ago, I assume its got even better since.

[expert] Lib file problems with Panotools

2002-05-16 Thread Simon Matthews

Hi,

I am trying to install the Panotools photostitching software.

I downloaded and unzipped the software, and put the library file
libpano12.so in /usr/lib as instructed. When you run the java
application you get the error message "Could not load library pano12".

After changing the permissions, renaming the file to pano12 and many
other permutations i thought it could be compatibility problems with the
library so i tried to recompile it. At this point i get the error
message "sys_ansi.h: No such file or directory".

Does anyone know what this file is, and which package it may be part of,
or has anyone had any success with Panotools. I did do a search on
Google and noted that someone else had posted to this list with the same
problem in January but had not had any reply.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, so i can rid my computer of a
part of the evil Microsoft empire!

By the way, i am running version 8.2 of Mandrake.

Many thanks

Re: [expert] Comparing folders/files in different HDs/FSs.

2002-05-16 Thread Simon Naish

Generate a list of md5 checksums with

$ md5sum -b `find -type f` > chksums
in the root dir of the original file system
copy the chksums file to the root of the new file system and run
$ md5sum -c chksums

this should check all the files against binary read checksums generated in the first
command.

This should work :)

hope it helps

The prob isnt the lack of stuff, the error message is because you havent selected a
plugin to apply to a file/dvd or actually specified that u want to play a dvd. try
pushing dmd button, or play with the playlist.

[expert] How to get dock apps and the like to auto start under blackbox in Mandrake 8.1

2002-04-05 Thread Simon Naish

Hi,

I've been playing with blackbox recently, it gives me more headroom to play dvds
without skipping than Kde, and found gkrellm which is cool. Problem is in the blackbox
docs they say stick the command gkrellm -w into a file called ~.xinitrc which isnt
there in Mandrake 8.1 . Making this file doesnt get it read, so where do I put the
comand, this would be the same place I want to put any and all commands to start dock
apps I presume.

Problem is I dont know where? Any ideas...

Re: [expert] Dual athlon problem with kernel >2.2

2002-03-20 Thread Simon A Watts

I would be interested if anybody has a solution to this as well. This
configuration (2xAthMP & Asus A7M-D) is exactly what I am considering
building in the next week or so.

One thing I did read a while ago was a bug with AMD's handling of the AGP;
something to do with 4kB/4MB mapping? The "usual" configuration (ie intel)
assumed that 4MB blocks where being used, but AMD was still using the
original 4kB ones. ...this is OTOH, I think a kernal patch was discussed at
the time (about a month or two back).

Good Morning all!

Can anyone suggest a product?

I'm looking for some sort of virus scan for my network. Something I can
install on the firewall or some other inline box that will scan all incoming
/ outgoing data for viruses.

Ideas?

Re: [expert] I Broke Konqueror

2002-02-20 Thread Simon Naish

Exactly the same probs I've been having, Only fix I can find involves getting the
simple settings and files from the .kde folder that you dont want to lose ie kab kmail
and desktop and colour scheme, and binning the entire rest of .kde. Then start in
console mode and as your user

rm -rf /tmp/*
rm [any .mcop and .dcop references in your home directory]

Restart with kde drop those files you saved into the relevant places in .kde, log out,
log back and there you are. This seems to work but is admittedly an ungraceful
solution (read Pain in the a*se!) But its better than no konqueror :)

If u get a better solution or even figure out what caused for definite then do tell,
I'm still trying to find out more.

Re: [expert] konqueror startup problems still... some kinda solution :@

2002-02-19 Thread Simon Naish

Thats pretty much what i do as well, I also save the contents of kdisplay folder (in
.kde/share/apps I think) which holds any saved colour schemes u have and kdeglobals
which is basically the dektop visual stuff - sad but I've got mine just right :) . The
weird thing I'm getting is that this prob seems to be slowly becoming more and more
cross user/ system wide I think. Dont ask me how. I've got it pretty much back to
normal - went in in console and wiped /tmp/* as root, killed all .mcop and dcop, wiped
~/.kde (after many relevant saves - kmail contents worth saving, or kiss your old mail
good bye).

It seemed to be behaving itself, but i put a new user on to use blackbox for watching
movies as i have a suspicion that the use of blackbox may have put something 'out of
sync'.
Problem was the mandrake first start wizard turned up (WHY??? its not that helpful
really - and about the only thing that gets up my nose about mdk, geting a bit m$ - u
will sort out your internet connection now etc. - any ideas how to stop that one
anybody?) And just would not let go, crashed the user on the second click whereever it
was?? weird

Then my partners user started to have trouble with konqueror :(

Upshot is I have a system that feels like its going to go t*ts up at any moment, which
i hate. On the plus side I want to muck about with the partitions on my system anyway.
I just wanted to do it when I put Mdk 8.2 on.

Effectively I've spent a good few days trying to discover the root cause of this and
after much trawling through news gruops Ican say, it happens to alot of people, a lot
of people seem to think that its something to do with kded, DCOP and kdeinit, though
none knows exactly what yet or have a specific fix. The best fix at the moment is to
do what u suggest. Guess i was just dead unlucky with the Mandrake wizard is all .

Never mind.

Before anyone thinks I'm just whingeing, I still think mdk8.1 is the best OS out there
if u want to get on with stuf and spend as little time as poss configuring stuff, its
just a pain that I couldnt figure out or find out a better fix than start kde from
scratch, as that realy is a pain - hopefully mdk8.2 will be really realy stable and
have supermount back with a kernel without alot of memory issues, that really would be
superb.

OK my 2 pence worth over with, thanks to all who tried to help, if I get a clearer
picture as to what makes this happen I'll post it, and a better solution hopefully :)

[expert] konqueror startup problems still... ... Any more ideas truly appreciated otherwise its reinstall time :(

2002-02-18 Thread Simon Naish

Hi, still having probs getting konqueror to start. This is what I've tried/results to
date.
1 Renaming .kde and starting X.

This stopped any konquerors starting - either for file management or browsing.
Everything else seemed to work.

2. Clearing /tmp by hand with original .kde dir.

No discernable change. Still got a load of konquerors attempting to start at login.
Followed by 50/50 chance of any konquerors working after these have died off.

BTW DCOP seems to think they are fine, and they appear in gtop. They just dont start
windows and eventually die. Any info on how to use DCOP anyone???

3. Making new user.

Now things got quite bizare. Made new user, logged in Mandrake first run wizard
occured, then crashed. Now all users suffering the first run wizard, which crashed and
much cursing followed to try and get into any user at all :( . Eventually managed to
get first run wizard to go away without crashing, then after all that no konqueror in
brand new user - pulling my hair out a bit by this stage :| ???

Other older users have konqueror fine - I'm nonplussed and rather bored of this, I
just seem to be slowly knackering the working remains of a dieing system. Trouble is I
really don't know what to try or where to look anymore. Anybody got any ideas?

This is desperately annoying, I really really like working in kde and feel konqueror
is one of the nicest file managers I've ever used. It just doesnt seem that kde can
handle a lot of use. Especially if you occasionally use a different wm [ I use
blackbox with xine - its lighter so I get to watch a movie with less jitters 8)) ].
Or, God forbid, you want to fine tune the menus and tweak everything to your taste.

If noone can offer a solution I guess its blackbox or enlightenment -cant stand gnome,
but it does work.

Cheers loads in advance for any help.

Re: [expert] konqueror probs any ideas??? Cheers for the Replies!! Any more suggestions?

2002-02-14 Thread Simon Naish

Rob,

ooosh, severe eh! This is what I'm trying to
avoid, the later post suggesting renaming
.kde to .kde.old will do the same thing and
keep a good record of what was what - as
always I'd just got everything 'right' :(

starting konqueror from a terminal is really
weird. I get nothing at all, no errors, no
seg faults, nada zip. The process doesn't
even seem to start. I've now got 5 old
konquerors trying to start on logging in.
None of them do a thing they just hang. And I
cant seem to stop them starting???

Another post suggests killing the flash 5
plugin. I'll try that then moving .kde to
.kde.old .

It's a real shame about this, in that, kde
has always gone abit odd for me after about 4
months of medium heavy use. Every version
does something weird after this amount of
time. It's always something different, but it
always happens - last one was the menu going
absolutely bonkers in one user, I mean to the
point of being funny :) .
Usually migrating to a new user will sort it
but its truly annoying to have to.

I'll keep people posted if anything comes of
their suggestions - and again cheers for the
prompt replies :)

Si

*NEW DEVELOPEMENT
Weirder still, if I let the konquerors that
are trying to start up die off, then start
kppp, then start a konqueror again, about
half the time i get konqueror to start,
otherwise I'm left in the doldrums still.
This is so strange!

[expert] konqueror probs any ideas???

2002-02-14 Thread Simon Naish

HI I have a problem with konqueror.
When I login about half the time konqueror wont start up. It its in the oanel tring to
but after about thirty seconds it dies. The konqueror for exploring the filesystem
seems to work more often than not. It's just the web browsing version that has real
trouble.

OK so I can use opera instead for the web, or Galeon or whatever. And Krusader is nice
but I've got really used to the kde 2.2.1 version of konqueror that comes with mdk8.1
and would prefer to use that.

BTW if I log out and then back in again it generally sorts itself out. I've tried
saving the state of the session for logging back in, after its sorted itself - no
change. I've tried deleting the /tmp files - no change, dont know what elese to try.

Please help

A few notes:

Blocking incoming ICMP pings doesn't make you undetectable. Blocking pings
for this reason induces a false sense of security.
Also note that blocking ALL ICMP is a 'bad thing'.
You really want to be able to _receive_ ICMP type 3 (Destination
Unreachable) and type 11 (Time Exceeded).
I'd argue it's polite to allow them to be sent.
You most likely want to ping things yourself, so allow outgoing type 8 and
incoming type 0 (the echo replies).
Again, if you want to ping, it's polite to reciprocate.

We allow types 0,3,8 and 11 to transit the firewall both ways. All other
ICMP we block.
Note that you should block ALL ICMP destined for a broadcast address.
Failing to do so makes you a 'SMURF AMP'.
A quick Google for ICMP and firewalls should help more.

http://www.cotse.com/icmptypes.html is a good resource.

Cheers Sy

OK Try th comman apropos at the prompt, it gives you a list of man pages to look

If cdrecord doesnt work try it as root as this prog isnt available to non root as
standard. Change its group to cdwriter and add yourself to cdwriter group to be able

[expert] PLEASE HELP, menudrake is crashing, update-menus and install-menu wont stop running.

2001-10-03 Thread Simon Naish

Right whenever I log on update-menus and install-menu run. They also fail to do
anything, I cant find why. Gnome is fine and has successfully made the menu install
that first showed the problem up. I'm pretty much at my wits end. This is what is
running when I log on.

update-menus -u
/usr/sbin/install-menu /etc/menu-methods//menu -u -f --stdin

Any help would be great otherwise its out with the disks and a full reinstall. g.

BTW menudrake is just crashing and locking everything when I try and run it.

2001-09-26 Thread Simon Naish

OK just a quick question, I've got a great modem connection with Linux,
opera/konqueror/n*tscrape all run really smoothly, but knode - which has a
really nice UI, has a problem thats driving me nuts, whenever u download an
article it takes about 30-60 seconds to get going and start downloading.
Netscape just goes and gets the article, but the UI is pants in comparison.

I'm running Mandrake8.0 and KDE2.1.1 so whats happening. I've got all the
security patches for Mandrake. Am I missing something or is this basically a
flawed app that just looks real nice?

[expert] ThinkPad Mandrake 8 - Hot Swap prevents fixing

2001-08-28 Thread Simon Millward

Hi,

Trying to upgrade to Mandrake 8 on T22 Thinkpad. This has a known bug which
disables the mouse. However the Mandrake solution, quote:
--
Mount the installation CD-ROM: mount /dev/cdrom
Change to the /mnt/cdrom/images directory
Create a new CD-ROM boot floppy: dd if=cdrom.img of=/dev/fd0
Reboot with the installation CD in the CD-ROM drive and the floppy containing
the patch in the floppy drive.
Be sure your BIOS is set to boot from floppy diskette.
Press F1 when the first boot screen comes up to get the syslinux boot prompt
At the syslinux prompt type: patch
--

Does not work because the floppy/DVD/CD are hot swappable i.e. I can't have
both in at the same time.

I've tried swapping them at the appropriate point but... it then complain
there is no CD and prompts for a driver. No driver appears to work, although
the flashing light on the laptop indicates that the hot swap hasn't worked
anyway (didn't really expect it to).

Does anyone have an alternative solution? (I'd like to know how they managed
to do this in the first place.. unless other thinkpads have cable floppy
drives)

[expert] User migration between two linux.

2001-08-08 Thread Simon Li

Dear all,

Hi all, I guess i can ask this question here mandrake is similar to RH ?...

I have two Rh6.2 system Kernel 2.2.14, (and I guess the
installatoin disc are the same one too).

I want to move:
1) User accounts (around 1200), and
2) Their files (webpage, email inbox)
to the another RH system, where it has little users and files, and plenty
free HHD space.

Since the desination server has little users, i guess it is okay coz the
userid
would not overlay too much. (Userid below 500 are system account, and
they have similar setting on the two system)

My solution was:
To append /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/group to the desntination
system. (with some manual editing)

Outcome:
It is fine for passwd and group file. But the /etc/shasow file is locked.
I sued as root and checked lsattr, they went fine. I guess the kernel (or
something is lock it up?). I tried fuser /etc/shadow and it gave no clue.

Since i am not able to shutdown these two server for long time or dis-
assemble them, what should i do if I want to do things this way?

Please help and thanks.

simonli.

If you logon a shell, typically the shell will a file called, say, .bashrc,

Most of the linux distribution alias rm to "rm -i" if the user is root.
"man rm " you will see.

Re: [expert] allow non-root user to shutdown linux

2001-07-31 Thread Simon Li

Dear,

The previously solution is nice.

1) Add a group which are designed to do only the shutdown job.
2) Add required user to the group.
3) Write a bash program and name it nicely, say, "shutdown" and write
shutdown command in it. Place it a location where everyone's path includes
me.
4) Grant the permission of your bash progam to the others (don't let them
able to read or write, just permission to execution!)

Solved?

Yours,
Simon.

[expert] Fw: NVidia (and KDE) bug - another possible fix

Subject: NVidia (and KDE) bug - another possible fix

OK this is kind of supposition, but it is based on finally getting those pesky NVidia
drivers to work with any user, and then playing around with the result for a while, so
here goes..

The fix IS the Gnu log in page, at least on my system, but the reason isn't hugely
obvious at first (at least not to me).

If you got yours working like this try something, log in, play game, log out, log in
(same account or different one), try and play game. Im betting it wont make any
difference what so ever that you are using the gnu login, your NVidia driver wont
drive, you just get that rather pants seg fault and not alot of info, other than the
app just tried to initialise a window.

NOw this suggests to me that the bug is definetly in the NVidia driver, not KDE's log
in. So why wont KDE's log in work(?). Well I reckon it's to do with the way that the
KDE login seems to fire up the drivers at least twice, you definetly get at least one
splash screen, and that as the above paragraph explains, kills the driver.

So there is a bug in the NVidia driver, Id be willing to bet it was a memory problem
when it's shutting down, maybe there is a system wide variable that isnt being reset,
or a memory leak somewhere, the point is this isnt kde's login, (although there are
issues to do with why is it restarting the driver) it seems to be pretty likekly that
the real culprit is the driver.

Hope this helps any one, if you're having these problems, check out
www.littlewhitedog.com they have a great article and a forum full of people tring to
fix this problem.

cheers

Re: [expert] NVidia drivers crashing with OpenGL

2001-06-02 Thread Simon Naish

OK, the drivers were NVDIDIA_GLX-1.0-1251.tar.gz and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1251.tar.gz
I discovered a host of people suffering the same sort of probs, some think it may be
to do with only the non mesa stuff, ie that could be why the gears prog still ran (at
least once!).

Also found someone who reckons it could be worth investigating the permissions on
/dev/nvidia0 as apparently this doesnt tend to happen if you are root at the time (how
they found out i cant imagine, great way to shaft the box , playing games as root!!)

any thoughts ??

[expert] NVidia drivers crashing with OpenGL

2001-06-01 Thread Simon Naish

Last night I decided to sort it out and get the NVidia drivers running on my machine.

All went well, I installed from tar zips made the Kernel driver and the OpenGL lib no
problem. Sat back astonished at the positively outrageous speed of gltron and the
ultra smooth spectacle of tuxracer. 8^)

Fired it up this morning to have a quick go before work and ... It locked up going
into anything(?) =-{

I can get gears to work, once, then it fails as does everything else. Could it be a
'lock'file somewhere, or display settings of some kind - I am running my own modeline
in XF86Config-4 to get the best out of the monitor.

Also the xlog does seem to be discarding ALOT of resolutions, but this doesn't really
explain why it worked fine yesterday and not now.

I did have a crash and total lock up both with gltron and open space last night but on
rebooting everything did still work...

Please help, this is just one more in a huge string of problems I seem to have waded
through with Mandrake 8.0 .

cheers si

[expert] getting kdevelop working

2001-05-31 Thread Simon Naish

Can anyone help?

I'm trying to get kdevelop working on madrake 8.0
So far ive hacked the config file so it accepts the new qt libraries. But, even though
qt is installed, nothing can access it's header files at compile time, so the config
file still falls over. They are in a folder called qt in the standard include dir but
aren't being seen by g++.

Im using bash, is there any way i can get this dir added to those that g++ normally
checks for #include in? Ive read the man and pinfo pages on gcc and bash
(phew) but cant find a reference to this kind of thing on a permanent basis, I can't
find setenv which is how a friend of mine got it working - he's also stumped by this
one... any help would be much appreciated

cheers si, 8^))

Turn off the option "PnP OS" in Bios.

[expert] PCMCIA probes installing on laptop

2001-04-06 Thread Simon Millward

Having a few problems installing 7.2 on new laptop.
Basically the installation hangs at the start while configuring PCMCIA.

I believe its possible to disable PCMCIA installation, and thus perform it
later when the system is installed.

Can someone tell me how to specify this at the start of installation?

Thanks
Simon

RE: [expert] shell programming books

2001-04-05 Thread Simon Millward

It may sound trite to say it but

$man ksh

Usually does the trick. Shell programming is rarely complex enough that you
need anything other then the man pages.
I've often wondered why a system level language like C, can be covered in
such a short volume (K&R C) when you can see books on shell scripting that
could equal the bible in verbosity...

I am assuming you have some programming experience however. If not.. the
best volume on actual programming (and surprisingly relevant to shell
scripting) is:

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs
Abelson & Sussman
ISBN: 0-262-51087-1
MIT Press

Bit dry in places... but worth persevering.

Hope thats more help than it sounds... :-)

Cheers
Simon

Hi,

I'm looking for a good book for learning shell programming. Any suggestions?

RE: [expert] Mandrake Update on 7.2

2001-04-04 Thread Simon Millward

Particularly frustrating is that in KDE2 when the list of conflicts pops up,
it appears in a window too big for the screen which cannot be resized to fit
?!?..
However, by removing uninstalling the conflicting rpms temporarily, so the
update works. Then, if you attempt to re-configure or use the previously
removed rpms, with the update CD still in, it appeared to detect a problem
and perform the remainder of the upgrade...
Quite neat I guess, but I also agree, the update disk ought to be smarter.

Mandrake update is too frustrating to use..

As a mortal user would, I clicked on SELECT ALL (which doesnt work, btw,
unless if you first click on one of the items listed) and clicked on DO
UPDATES. It gave me a warning about one of the packages, I clicked on FORCE.
It gave me a page of errors from rpm, blah blah conflicting with blah blah.

I think Mandrake Update needs more intelligence to figure out these
conflicts. If it's a new lib* it needs, it should fetch and install it
FIRST,
before attempting to install an application, for example. -turgut

[expert] Civilme: inquiring minds want to know

2001-03-24 Thread Simon Cousins

Hi Listers,

I run Mdk 7.2 on a broad range of desktops and servers.

I've RTFM and issued appropos, scanned the LDP, and read every HOWTO and FAQ.

But I just cannot figure out how to pronounce Civilme.

[expert] MandrakeUpdate tips

Hi John,

Here's my list so far:

1. When installing a fresh Mdk 7.2 distro always run MU asap and update MU and
grpmi right away. Exit MU and restart before any more updates.

2. Always run rpm --rebuilddb after a large update session.

3. Try to update smaller numbers of items (even singles if dependencies allow).
This helps keep the MU database state in good repair and saves plenty of d/l time if
there are issues.

4. If you have a package(s) that MU won't update due to dependency issues, then
go back to the console and issue rpm -e from the commandline and remove the packages
manually.

5. If you have a package in MU that supposedly needs updating but has already
been updated, the only way to remove it from the MU listing is to go to the console
and remove the package manually, then re-install off your CD or from an ftp server.
Next time you run MU the item will correctly update and disappear from the list.

6. Run MU from a terminal (issue MandrakeUpdate) rather than from DrakCOnf.
Leave the terminal window open so you can see what messages are being written while
you update. This can assist debugging.
