I don't think it's a supermount problem
because i have.

I'm quite sure i didn't have the problem
with alpha13 version too.
Probably i configured the devices as root first.
After that i configured again the devices as normal
user.

Could the delay be supermount polling your removable drives? I use
xcdroast-0.98-27.alpha13mdk with supermount permanently disabled in

Hi
I have this version installed
xcdroast-0.98-28.alpha14mdk

After having re-configured all the cd-devices
(deleted and re-scanned) all works well.

Good thought, but didn't work :-( It still took around 1 minute on
the image info tab even though no images exist in the directory and
no disk is in the drive. Ah, well. It must be a but in this
particular release, I think. I'm sure it wasn't a problem under 9.0.

I had k3b running under 9.0, but never got on with it quite as well as
xcdroast (opposite to what many people find, I know). It simply
doesn't run out of the box on 9.1, and since xcdroast no longer has
the one problem I found before - not wanting to read from my
non-scsi-emulated cd/dvd - it isn't worth struggling with it.

Apart from this one start-up annoyance I'm very happy with xcdroast.

Yup, it will do that even if empty. But it'll time out a lot faster
without the disk. I've been looking at other burner applications but

Yup did that and then read back the "cd/image info" , instead of seeing
the contents of the disk, all I see is in the "CD-Information" box is
"1.data track {488MB]
ISO9660:WXPVOL_EN[488MB]"
In the "Image-Information" box
"Path :/var/image
3.winxp.iso [488MB]
(WXPVOL_EN ISO9660)"

Now being a slight distrusting person I checked the content of the CD
using Nautilus to find on both copies I made the correct files in their
expanded state.

I suspect also that there is a unmounting problem as I had to use the
CD-player to eject the CD :))..

So does xcdroast automatically determine whether or not it is an iso
image or a normal data file (ie frogs.tgz).
Also with Miarks comment about speed, does this indicate the write speed
can exceed the speed stated by the manufacturer, and by how much ?

cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=DEV -data file.iso

On mine not using the burnfree opt creates fewer coasters. and the -dao
is the default so I don't bother.

Very close. Go to create cd, then write tracks, then layout tracks, select
the iso image from the directory (must be in the directory you entered in
setup / hd settings), click add, then accept track layout then write tracks,
do not pad tracks, use disk at once dao mode and write tracks. You can
verify the cd burn by doing a md5sum /dev/(which device your burner is on,
eg. scd). It should return the same md5sum as the original iso image. If
you pad the tracks or don't use dao then the md5sums won't verify the burn.

Ah, you don't need to use a gui. Find out what device your burner is with
"cdrecord -scanbus" and then use the following command:

  cdrecord -dao -v dev=DEV speed=8 driveropts=burnfree file.iso

where DEV is the bus location of your burner that you determined with
scanbus, such as 0,1,0 or whatever. If your drive doesn't have
bufeer-underrun protection, leave out the driveropts portion. Also, feel
free to change the speed.

Q:
17. Uh...I feel stupid but how to write downloaded ISO-images?
A:
If you downloaded an ISO-image (e.g. a linux distribution) you have
to copy that big file (extension should be .iso) first to an
image-directory of X-CD-Roast. You specify these directories in Setup
at the "HD Settings" tab. These are the places where X-CD-Roast will
look for audio (.wav) or data tracks.
Now you enter the "Create CD" menu and you will see your image-file
displayed nicely in the "Image-Information" window. Go to
"Write Tracks" -> click on "Layout tracks" tab, add your image-file,
click on "Accept track layout" and finally a click at "Write tracks"
will write that image perfectly to your CD-R/RW.

Just to clarify - do you have an image that you want to turn into a cd, or do
you want to create an image?

wobo,

Do you have the latest version of mkisofs from updates? I've heard
there is a problem with the "stock" version on the download disks and
maybe that is what the problem is?

I think this one got a nice review in the german LinuxUser magazin. But
no KDE or GNOME on my boxes :)

During waiting time until release of KDE 3.0.1 I tried other alternatives
and got stuck with fluxbox (Thanks, Civileme!). It starts 10 times
faster, is highly customizable (expression??) and with a bit reading of
TFM I made it do what I want. I start all my favourite apps with a
combination of the Tux button (former Windows button) on my keyboard and
a letter, i.e. Tux+M starts Mozilla, Tux+E starts eterm, Tux+X starts
XEmacs, etc. FAST!

So there's no sense for me to use any of the KDE related things although
fluxbox is KDE combatible.

I have the same problem; on three different machines the IDE CD-RW drive
has never been found automatically! The 'SCSI' ID tends to be returned
as (0,6,0) rather than (0,0,0) and has to be changed to the second by
hand.

One machine has an IDE CD drive and an IDE CD-RW drive; the other two an
IDE CD-RW drive only. CD-RW manufacturers are various (Yamaha, Teac,
Lite-On) and lilo.conf is OK in all instances.

On the theme of decadence, here's a new KDE 3-compatible CD burning
frontend which IMO is the best yet:

That's not the prob. I used the 8.2 xcdroast to copy various CDs
(including the DL-Edition of 8.2), to copy audio CDs and to do my system
backup on a CD/RW.

md5sum was no problem, all DL CDs I burned for friends were ok.

The prob is that it doesn't recognize the original Mandrake PowerPack
CDs. It keeps saying that there is a "Blank CD/RW" in the drive. When I
eject this and put any other CD, even an original WinME CD in the drive
the CD gets recognized and is ready to be cloned. Only Mandrake CDs don't
want to be cloned!

As I described before it was not a hardware issue because with gcombust I
was able to do the copy.

I don't trust the updated version either. To get a burned CD with a correct
md5sum I had to use dd and then either cdrecord or gcombust. The image file
that xcdroast created had an invalid md5sum. This was with a CHEAP QPS CD-RW.

Yes, of course, I did that before I even started with xcdroast because
xcdroast wouldn't even let me enter the Reader Device if it wasn't scsi.

One really gets lazy with the time. A year ago I did all my cd burning
with the cli commands mkisofs and cdrecord. Now I even install 2
frontends because one doesn't work on my box.

Well, now I installed gcombust and it works. gcombust did not find the
devices, I had to manually fill in the device names for the cdrom and the
cdrw. But it did 'see' that there is a cd in the cdrom waiting to be
copied by the cdrw.

OK, first did you install the updates for the cd writing stuff? It's
broken out of the box in 8.2. Assuming that's handled, the first time
you run xcdroast needs to be as root. That will create the config file.

Even then, I found I had to manually set set-uid on the two files
mentioned.

Then it works. Why do people say linux is difficult? ;-)

Hello

I don't know if xcdroast version you are running but the one I have (I think
is alpha9) comes with some options. That is, when you click on the
directory you want to burn three options pop out on the screen. Redirect is
the one you want. You would have to type the name you want. For instance
if you choose /home/user you type (redirect) /user or whatever you like.

Re: [expert] xcdroast woes

2001-07-27 Thread jason-snyder

I delved a little deeper into the problem. I tried the latest xcdroast rpm off
of cooker (xcdroast-0.98-9mdk.i586.rpm). This failed. I went to xcdroast's home
page and flipped through the changelogs. I noticed in a few different places
that the scanbus parser code had been modified. Seeing that the latest version
is 0.98alpha9, I checked what was cooker's version and it came out to
0.98alpha6. I tried installing the latest version (packaged for RedHat 7.1)
downloaded from xcdroast's site and it worked. (I had to ignore decencies to do
so.) This gives me the impression that the problem that I have had all along is
a parser problem that was fixed a couple of rev's ago.

I would recommend that the cooker teem dump xcdroast 0.98alpha6 and go with at
least 0.98alpha7 before releasing mdk 8.1 unless there is some problem that I am
unaware of.

cdrecord -scanbus scans the scsi bus on your machine and gives you list. If
IDE-SCSI emulation is enabled the emulated devices are also shown. I suppose
that your 3ware controller does some fancy things on the scsi bus.

This is a hardware / driver problem.

Or at http://www.xcdroast.org/

Theres a mention of a bug that causes it to crash on LM8, so if you want to
use it, you'll apparently have to recompile. Also, it only works as root
now, due to GTK+ 1.2.9 issues, I presume this is why it's not included in
LM8.

So... here it is..

Mandrake 8.0 default GTK-Theme crashes X-CD-Roast
Due a bug in the eazel-engine used by Mandrake as
default theme for
GTK-apps, X-CD-Roast segfaults when clicking on the
"Write-Tracks" Menu.

NEW: Workaround for now: comment out line 2208 in
create.c
   ("gtk_widget_grab_default (b1);"), recompile and it
won't crash there any longer.
Otherwise do switch to another gtk-theme.

Re: [expert] xcdroast

2000-08-14 Thread Rob Morrison

I had the same problem (it sounds like) on a couple
of different systems on new installs, one of RedHat
6.2, and one of Mandrake 7.1.

I resolved the problem (after much digging through
archives of this mailing list, and other resources on
the net) by loading the "ide-scsi" module.

Not knowing intuitively (by divine intervention, I
guess) that CD burning and Linux has deeply entrenched
SCSI roots, I didn't automatically know to check for
this. Why distributions like Mandrake and RedHat
don't configure themselves for this automatically if
you select "CD Burning" packages, and you don't have a
SCSI adapter, I don't know.

No, you must explicidly "close" the session or else your CD Player will not
recognize it.

Also the burn must be done in one session... In other words if you did not
close the session initially you normally cannot go back and close it, and
still have your player read it.

Computers can handle this, audio players normally do not.

"Closing" means that you finalize the CD. No further writing is possible.

This has nothing to do with it being ejected.

A burn can complete correctly but the session remain "open".

In addition to what John and Gary have already mentioned...be sure to create
only one session on the CDR. CD players can only read the first session,
but I don't think this will be a problem for you in Linux.

Actually, what I *meant* to write was this: 1) did you
"close" the CD? (My understanding is that XCDRoast does
"close" the cd by default.) 2) CDRW disks don't work in
non-computer CD players (from my understanding.) A plain
CDR *should* work in an audio CD player (depending on how
new it is, I should think -- newer CD players *should* be
able to handle the different color of the CD.)

Re: [expert] xcdroast

Due to differences in the basic composition of CD-R and CD-RW disks, a
CD-RW will not register in a standard CD player, nor in many CD-ROM
drives. You'll need to burn it to a CD-R to use it outside your
computer.

BTW, when I first do something different with CD burning, I always burn
a CDRW to test out my plan. That way, I don't make more coasters than
I need. :-)
