Yes, you must absolutely believe in the fact that you can and
will gain enlightenment, no matter what happens. Be one
 pointed on the Goal.

Yup. Either that or don't care about it at all, and
just live your life as it seems best to you, never
giving even a thought to enlightenment. Or something
in between.

The thing is, I've seen all three approaches work.
I suspect the bottom line is that there are no rules,
and no single approach that works best for everyone.

In case you don't know, a tenet of many if not all
spiritual traditions is, What you focus on you become.

snip
Jim Flanegin thinks it's shit not worth reading. Not taking
note of reality might put you in fool's paradise.

I think that what Jim was expressing was his feeling
that there might be more productive things in life to
focus on -- and thus become -- than just another
incident of violence in a violent world.

In meditation one has a choice -- whether to focus on
the object of meditation (or, in a TM context, whether
to effortlessly come back to the mantra), or whether
to remain lost in the thoughts and sensations that
have arisen. That choice -- and what we do with it --
is what makes us human and gives us the ability to
realize our enlightenment.

Outside of meditation, we have the same choice. We
could choose to focus on the dark stuff, like so many
around us. But if you really *look* at the lives of
so many around us and what they have become as a
result of their focus on the dark stuff, is that what
*you* want to become? If so, focus on the dark stuff.

If not, there is another possibility. You can be
aware of the dark stuff, and when it is possible do
whatever you can to eliminate it by exposing it to
light. But then the rest of the time, you can focus
on something that is a tad more uplifting. Focus on
laughter in a world of tears and it's the laughter
you become, not the sadness. Focus on light in the
midst of darkness, and you become light.

'Nuff said. You're a smart kid...you'll figure it out.

STP?
according to www.streetdrugs.org

DOM (4-Methyl-2,5-dimethoxyamphetamine) was introduced to the San
Francisco drug scene in the late 1960's and given the nickname STP,
an acronym for Serenity, Tranquility, and Peace. Doses of 1 to 3
milligrams generally produce mood alterations and minor perceptual
alterations while larger doses can produce pronounced hallucinations
that last from 8 to 10 hours.

STP was a short-lived hallucinogen that was supposedly
developed by the military as a weapon. Its effects lasted
for several days and were designed to incapacitate those
who took it. The idea was to dump it into an enemy's
water supply and then roll into town and take over

Nothing like acid, really. I can't imagine anyone

Sorry, urban legend. 'The first acid to hit the streets'
came directly from Switzerland, in bottles with the
Sandoz label still on them. It wasn't illegal; if you
were part of a legitimate Chem lab, even one associated
with a university, you could order the stuff directly
from Sandoz. When it was finally made illegal, that
stopped, of course, but by then the formula had become
so widespread that almost anyone with an adequate Chem
background could make it.

There is no question that the military was involved in
testing hallucinogens, with an eye towards both using
them as weapons and trying to figure out a defense if
they were used as weapons on U.S. troops. But it's not
as if they leaked the stuff to the street; it had
been known about and was freely circulating in the Chem
community for years before the military got hip to the
stuff's existence.

As I heard the story, STP was different in that it was
actually developed *by* the military, as a weapon. LSD
was just chanced upon by Albert Hofmann back in the
1930s in the course of experiments of an entirely
different nature.

Yes, you must absolutely believe in the fact that you can and will
gain enlightenment, no matter what happens. Be one pointed on the
 Goal.

That doesn't seem to have been the context, however.

I was responding to this from you:

That is why he now proclaims that liberation, enlightenment,
Brahman, identifying with the Self, Awakening, etc. are not useful
terms, labels or concepts. Every attempt to have him state what he
*does* believe in just results in his challenging the perception of
 the person asking.

(Your first sentence isn't what he actually *said*,
but that's a different issue.)

You appeared to be suggesting that he should hold
beliefs about the *nature* of Awakening, not that
he should believe such a thing was possible.

snip
OK akashanon, you, unlike all of the spiritual teachers in the
   world, have declared the very concept of Awakening as invalid;
 that
there can be no legitimate transition between ignorance and
Awakening, that all we can apparently hope for is some small,
incremental experiences of expanding our awareness, maybe, and
 that
no phase transition occurs between one state, ignorance, and
liberation, enlightenment, Brahman, identifying with the Self,
   Awakening, etc.

Boy, that isn't what I understand him to be saying.

 Si? Que?

I don't recognize what you write above as being any
of the points he made.

Yeah, except that the focus here is your hypocrisy
in instructing Jason on the importance to one's
spiritual development of always focusing on what is
productive and uplifting, as if that were what you
believed and how you behaved.

Obviously you'd like to try to obscure that focus,
but unfortunately the only way you know to accomplish
it is by shifting the focus to what you call the
dark stuff of the person pointing out the hypocrisy--
which is what you just told Jason is to be avoided,
compounding the original hypocrisy.

I'm just exposing your dark stuff to the light,
you see. And I suggest that operating in the Now
is not a sign of your great spiritual development
but rather a means of avoiding accountability for
your behavior.

With that kind of focus, what do you think they
 will become?

 :-) :-) :-)

If we were to go over your posts here (not to mention
on alt.m.t), what percentage do you think we would
find focusing on dark stuff as opposed to what is
productive and uplifting?

Now, THIS information I find of interest.

Please, somebody educate me: Are sacrifices of animals -- live or
otherwise -- perscribed to be included in yagyas in the Vedas?

Actually, not only are live animal sacrifices
prescribed in the Vedas, they are still common
in modern-day India. As it turned out, this
service (the Heifer Foundation) seems to be
completely benevolent, and has nothing whatsoever
to do with them. I was merely curious as to
whether it did. Vaj set me straight; it's an
organization that arranges gifts of live animals
to help people living in poverty become self

Judy's just smarting from the devastating effects

again, that's all. And as usual when she feels
she has been attacked, she's trying to stink
up the place. Who knew that laughter could have
such an effect? :-)

The question that occurs to me is, What would
happen if you sacrificed a skunk to the Vedic
gods?

Would they feel pleased at the sacrifice and
thus propiated? Or might they find the whole
scene hilarious and -- Vishnu help us -- *laugh*
at it? And if they *did* laugh, should the
organizers of the skunk yagya feel attacked?

My head hurts from pondering all this heavy
Vedic stuff. I'm going to watch Battlestar

In case you don't know, a tenet of many if not all
spiritual traditions is, What you focus on you become.

Is that why, when someone on alt.m.t touted the Heifer
Foundation, the first thing that occurred to you was
whether, under the guise of giving farm animals to poor
people, it was actually supplying the animals for live
yagya sacrifices (citing Koreans in L.A. who used to
rescue puppies from the pound and then eat them for
   dinner)?

As I recall, you went on to point out that providing
live animals for sacrifice was a thriving business
in India, contrary to the image of a beloved and
idealized India you claimed was held by TB TMers.

Now, THIS information I find of interest.

Please, somebody educate me: Are sacrifices of animals -- live or
otherwise -- perscribed to be included in yagyas in the Vedas?

Actually, not only are live animal sacrifices
prescribed in the Vedas, they are still common
in modern-day India. As it turned out, this
service (the Heifer Foundation) seems to be
completely benevolent, and has nothing whatsoever
to do with them. I was merely curious as to
whether it did. Vaj set me straight; it's an
organization that arranges gifts of live animals
to help people living in poverty become self
sufficient. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Actually, Barry could have found this out for
himself by clicking on the URLs that were provided
by the folks posting about the foundation. But he
saw an opportunity to focus on the dark side of
India and of Koreans.

Judy's just smarting from the devastating effects
of being laughed at, and is feeling attacked
 again, that's all.

Barry has all *kinds* of ways to avoid taking
responsibility for what he says and does. Claiming
to operate in the Now is one of them; another
is claiming the person who calls attention to
what he's said is feeling attacked.

And as usual when she feels
she has been attacked, she's trying to stink
up the place. Who knew that laughter could have
 such an effect? :-)

And still another, as I just noted, is reducing the
person who has called him to account to the status
of an animal in his mind.

It's a terrific organization, I think. I got my

(I wish they didn't spend *quite* so much on their

Actually, even though it's being asked by the Judybot,

That is correct. I have had quite a few experiences
that map to what TMers might call 'CC.' I have had
other experiences that don't map to anything that has
*ever* been mentioned in a TM context, but were pretty
neat. But as it turns out I have neither had, nor have
I ever sought, any experience that could in any way be
descried as there is no me-vs-them, we are all one.

I suspect that this description has almost nothing to
do with real experiences of the direct perception of Unity.
In other words, what I think Judy is describing is a
guess, *from the point of view of someone who hasn't
even experienced CC*, of what Unity might be like.

Actually not. Not only is it a frequently reported
experience on this forum (odd that you've somehow
managed to miss it) and elsewhere, but I've had it
 myself on occasion. I don't know whether it's a
direct perception of Unity, but then I didn't claim
it was. It *is* an experience of perceiving the Self
 in others.

Me, I consider her description NewAgeSpeak at its
worst, so admit with some *pride* to never having
  experienced anything like it.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that with a bit of

Actually, one feature of the program is that
recipients are asked to give one or more of the
offspring of the animals they receive to another
family, which in turn gives offspring to another
family, and so on.

Recipients are also trained in how to take care
of the animals.

distinct from Self, as if other?

Its an experience of seeing (sensing /knowing) Being / Silence is at
the core of anyone and everyone. Its seeing them glide on silence. (I
think is what anonff is referring to).

 What do you mean
 by, ...that they were witnessing?

Its an experience of seeing that the Silence at the core of others
is separate from their body, mind, speech and all. It facilitates /
invites an appreciation, even a celebration of the other regardless of
their outer characteristics. The other may not yet sse or
experience this within themselves.

If I'm understanding your experience correctly, it
sounds more like growing CC than UC, but I'll wait for
 your response !

Its seeing silence / Being outside ones own sphere. In others. Not yet
in stars and water and the earth. But in some things. Its a beginning.

CC is distinct from this, it is knowing silence within, not
outside in other things.

Peter
The experiece was very confusing to have and moreso to describe. If I
were the one doing the witnessing, I would experience myself as
separate from Being. This was not that. I would be, say, standing and
talking to someone, see them, see their mouth moving, hear the words
but they seemed puppetlike and along with that I was very aware of
them as separate from Beimg and Being seemed pervasive.
That's as good as I can describe it.

Huh?

You got your sister a share of a water buffalo that was sacrifed to
the gods in a yagya?

So, if you bought her only 1/10th of the buffalo, does she only get
1/10th of the benefit of the yagya when it is sacrificed?

...and who pays the carting fees for the burnt carcass? Are you
responsible for the same portion of the carting fees?

[FairfieldLife] Oeuvre d'art pour Shemp

2006-01-14 Thread TurquoiseB
Hey Shemp,

I know from past interactions that you appreciate
some of the artworks of a fellow I know. I saw a
*very* rare piece of his tonight that I thought
you would dig hearing about.

The artist in question is known for the precision
of his line drawing. He's reknowned for his comics,
but his drawing has been compared to some of the
olde masters, and with reason. So anyway, what
I came across tonight was a leftover from the
early days of him teaching himself how to draw.
Early on, he became fascinated with Japanese ink
painting, and the Zen of it. It's a very Now
artform, because the paper that the artist paints
on is so fragile that the entire painting has to
be done in one long brushstroke. If you pause
or lift the brush from the paper, you tear it and
the whole piece goes in the trashbin.

Anyway, the piece I found that I know you would
just love is from a period in which this artist
was trying to draw like this, in one long stroke,
never lifting his pen from the paper until the
work was finished. He still has a few of the
drawings from that period, but this piece of art
is not even pen on paper.

It's done on an Etch-a-sketch.

And it's magnificent. I really loved it, not only
because the drawing is lovely, but because it's
so incredibly fragile. It could never be transported
anywhere, because if you tried to move it very far,
whatever the mechanism is inside an Etch-a-sketch
machine that erases the current painting and creates
a blank canvas for the next painting would get
activated during the move.

The whole thing reminded me of Tibetan sand mandalas.
They're a very ephemeral artform as well. Six or
seven monks work for six or seven months to create
this perfect mandala, painted in colored sand. And
then at the end of the process, because the work of
art really can't be preserved and was never intended
to be preserved in the first place, the monks just
sweep all the sand into a sack, offer it to the gods,
and start on the next mandala.

This Etch-a-sketch painting is a lot like that. It
has managed to survive all this time, but sooner or
later, it's going to just go away. One of the cats
is going to knock it over, or a maid dusting that
shelf is going to knock it over, and it'll be history.
At that point, the drawing will exist only in the mind
of the artist who created it and the people who were
fortunate enough to see it before it went away.

I feel fortunate to be one of the latter. I'm just
passing this story along because I have the weird
intuition that you'd appreciate it.

Unc

Cheating is permitted in this case because IMO it's
a really interesting movie, all about aversion and
having to deal with your aversions before you can
get past them. Very Buddhist flick, for a scary
movie. :-)

When it first came out, a reviewer in Los Angeles
really lit into it. He wrote a *scathing* review
of the film, ranting up one side of the righteously
offended wall and down the other. The critic said
that the film was just the latest example of the
blood and gore horror flicks, and then he went
on to disparage the whole genre. The thing is,
there was *no* blood and gore on the screen during
the movie (or almost none). The screenwriter and
the director just made you see it in your head.
This supposedly-hip film critic was so unaware of
his own perceptions and how they worked that he
really came away from the film convinced that he'd
seen it onscreen, when he hadn't. Fascinating
phenomenon, in my opinion.

I mean, it's noble and all that, and people have been
claiming to be pursuing it for eons. But many of those

socially responsible to set one's sights a little lower,

 Unc

I saw a 20/20 (or Dateline) piece on etch-a-sketch art
once...apparently, if you know how to do it, you can somehow turn it
over (VERY gently, of course!) remove the bottom, and then
somehow freeze (not in terms of temperature) the existing image so
that it can be freely moved...

But, yes, I've seen some really wonderful etch-a-sketch drawings and
they are a sight to behold!

I saw the sand mandala that was part of a Kalachakra ritual performed
by HHDL in Sarnath. Just before it was destroyed. Symbolizing the
impermanance of relative life. Along with 500,000-1 mil pilgrims from
Nepal and Tibet. It was special. And amazing.

The devotion of some lay participants still burns in my memory. For
example, a teen girl taking darshan and blessing for her beads from
each of the 1000 buddha statues in the Sarnarth Museum. While some
jaded readers may see this as rituals tied to tired dogma, if you saw
the devotion on her face, you would be touched.

sister a share of a water buffalo for Christmas.

 Huh?

You got your sister a share of a water buffalo that was sacrifed to
 the gods in a yagya?

No, Shemp. Read it again.

Is total eradication of suffering in the world the
only worthy goal to have while living in that world?
I mean, it's noble and all that, and people have been
claiming to be pursuing it for eons. But many of those
same people have been responsible for much of the
suffering this planet has seen. Might it not be more
socially responsible to set one's sights a little lower,
like ferinstance, Be as happy as I can be and treat
the people I run into along the Way as well as I am
able to treat them and influence the suffering of
 the world that way? :-)

Do you treat people as well as you are able to
treat them, Barry?

Judy's just smarting from the devastating effects
of being laughed at, and is feeling attacked
again, that's all. And as usual when she feels
she has been attacked, she's trying to stink
up the place. Who knew that laughter could have
  such an effect? :-)

So, you're aware that at least one person feels bad when she's
 laughed at

Mistaken assumption. He isn't aware of it, he
fantasizes that it's the case.

, and yet you persist in doing things to make this person feel bad.

 Why?
