Re: Lucy update
Ask your vet about giving her simethecon for gas. There are baby drop versions of Gas X that can be used. I used them with Kitty Katt when she permitted and it helped. Pepsid also helped with discomfort. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. St. Francis - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, July 14, 2006 9:47 PM Subject: Lucy update Well, Lucy ate 3 jars of turkey baby food today, with her raw food supplements mixed in, and ate a couple of handfuls of cooked turkey and duck, all of which combined should be a normal amount of daily calories, I think (the baby food alone is 240 calories for 3 jars). Her weight is back upover 8pounds too. Also, after not moving her bowels for 24 hours, she had asoft but solidstool. But now she seems uncomfortable and bit out of it, and her stomach is making very loud rumbling and gurgling noises, which i guess is all the baby food wreaking havoc on her gut. I feel bad for giving it to her, knowing she does not digest it well, but she really wanted to eat it and she just would not eat enough of the stuff that doesn't bother her. Perhaps in that situation I should force-feed her raw food instead of feeding her the baby food? I am expecting she will probably be sick in the middle of the night like she was 2 weeks ago when all she would eat for a day was baby food, as the pred was kicking in. Yes, I definitely plan to take her to the internist. I wish it could wait until Gray gets home from China so he can help me with her though. My mom offered to drive so I can pet Lucy in the car, which I will take her up on, but she is a very nervous person, which is not always very helpful in these situations, unlike Gray who is like the Buddha himself. But at this point I feel like I want to take her soon, and don't want to wait. Re: groundhog
There is a wonderful song at www.andiesisle.com/Calling_All_Angels.html My holistic vet sent the Royal Princess Kitty Katt drops with Calling All Angels essence in them when she was ready to leave this world and told me about it when she sent a card after Kitty left. I Googled it and this song came up. It has helped me more than I can tell you. I am sending it now to the group. So many of us are having extreme times. Please pass it on to Gunner's person. Assure her that Gunner loves her and knows how much she loves him. He is very grateful to finally be with someone who cares. As far as the ground hog is concerned: Had he been left in the woods alone and injured he could have met a much more painful end. He would have been terrified unless he made it to his den. You did every thing you could do for him. And he knows it and is grateful you returned his body to his land.I can not believe that no vet would help you. The rehabbers I understand. Most of them are volunteers and frequently are not available but a vet should have at least been able to help the groundhog on his journey. That is extremely upsetting. Hi Michelle, I hope Lucy is feeling better today..I sure don't know what to do cause what works for Inky doesn't seem to work for Lucy. Have you tried adding bene-bac? I gave Inky some when he had loose stool and Bandy, too.. The bran isn't working either I take it... I know my lymphoma kitty was on 20mg of pred for 9 months or so..actually the rest of her life..I had another kitty on that much pred for 3 yrs...she had a tumor on the back side of her tongue and the pred would keep the inflammation down so she could eat...She had all the side effects that people get on high dose steroids, but that was the only way to keep her comfortable and she was until the last few days.. Have you checked her for hyperT? I know some of Inky's troubles was that along with the IBD. Inky is so skinny, but eats ok and only has 1 stool per day..I gave him astragalus, too. I think that might have been for the hyperT though..I am trying to rack my brain as what you could try... Anyway, you 2 are in our thoughts and prayers. Kerry and Bandy Do you Yahoo!? Get on board. Hi all! Guess I overdid my computer time yesterday cause my one (still good) eye gave out. What a bummer! Well, that's life right now for me. I just found out where I was right before the accident. ON A RECUE!!! Thank heavens there were no kitties with me. Still not sure exactly what I was doing, but I did find out that apparently I had not slept the night before, guess I fell asleep. My heavens, I don't want to know anything else. I did find out that there were no other vehicles (except a parked bus I rammed into) or people involved! What a relief... I was the only person involved. My Mom just called. She was on her way to visit got lost. I am so upset. I could not remember the directions to my house. And she was only a few miles away! I HATE THIS MEMORY THINGY...or lack of. Thanks again for all the kind words and putting up with my venting... Love to you all, Patti

My Fred, 15 years old currently has early CRF and was recently treated with I131 for hyperthyroid. He also had an infection which we treated with Orbax, he will have a dental in a week or so and blood work to check where his thyroid is in a month and a half. Currently he isn't getting any fluids or special diets until we see where his next blood work and urinalysis stands. he is slowly gaining back some of the weight he's lost from the hyper-t. And I found a food he seems to really like. I just wanted to let you know that many on the group have kitties that were diagnosed in pretty bad shape and with agressive fluid therapy and food changes, sometimes phorperous binders and other supplements they are doing great. Some that were in pretty bad shape are still going strong 2, 3 and even more years later. You also need a good vet who knows what they are doing. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Please say a prayer for Lucy
Thanks, Kerry. Actually, her stools seem pretty normal now, just a bit soft but that could be because I gave her a lot of rice bran yesterday mixed in with her baby food. She is back on 10 mg/day of pred. I am not really worried about keeping her on that for a while. It's more that I am worried as to why she needs it. It could just be IBD, or it could be lymphoma, and the latter requires leukeran as well as pred, I think. This morning she ate a little raw food and a handful of cooked duck, then 1.5 jars of turkey baby food with supplements and bran mixed in. She is on a baby food kick and acts like she is not that hungry until I give her the baby food and then she gobbles it voraciously. Unfortunately it gives her gas, which then makes her uncomfortable and sort of lethargic for a few hours afterwards. It has already put a little weight back on her, though, and I at least know she is eating enough, and she is not getting diarrhea, so I guess I will keep giving it to her if that is what she wants to eat, unless or until she will eat enough or something else. I have an internist aptmt scheduled for Monday. If she is relatively ok I may try to switch it back to Wed for work-related reasons. Benebac seems to give Lucy diarrhea. I think it may be cultured in lactose, and she seems to be lactose-intolerant. She does better with kyadophilus, which I was using in Nina's turkey mush recipe for the past couple of weeks until Lucy stopped eating it a few days ago. Maybe I will put some in her baby food tonight, or whatever she eats. Thanks again, Michelle In a message dated 7/15/2006 5:36:58 A.M. Re: Lucy update - baby food and calcium ratio
I've heard of people giving Bean-o to dogs, is that okay for cats too? If it's okay, maybe you could add just the tiniest squirt to her baby food. The vet on the IBD list was kind enough to send me the recipe for adding calcium and B vita to baby food to make it more complete when I was assist feeding Gypsy. Here's a paste from her email to me: Your other option would be to syringe feed her plain meat baby food...but add some calcium and B-complex vitamins. I finally got a chance to do some calculations for adding calcium carbonate to baby food. A 2.5 ounce jar needs about 50 mg of calcium added. The NOW brand of calcium carbonate has 1,200 mg per tsp...which makes it very difficult to calculate properly. However, you could combine 6 jars of food and then that would require 300 mg which would be 1/4 tsp of the NOW CC. Other brands have different amounts of elemental calcium in each tsp so you need to pay attention to that. Here are some links to the NOW brand of CC. http://www.nowcatalog.com/1245.html http://www.iherb.com/calcarbo.html You also need to add some B-Complex. Use 10-20 mg per 6 jars of baby food. They come in 50mg capsules so use just a portion of the capsule. If syringe feeding, go with 10 mg - or less - because you do not want to create a food aversion. Taste it yourself to test it. B vitamins are strong tasting. If using a feeding tube, I would go with the 20 mg/6 jars of baby food. I would also add in enough taurine to provide 60 mg/day. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks. My mom did research on the net and told me cats can get liquid di-gel for gas. Is that the same thing? My mom also read an article saying corn causes gas, and there is corn starch in the baby food, so maybe that is it. I am trying to find somewhere that sells Beechnut, which is just turkey and water, though in the past she would not eat that anyway. Michelle In a message dated 7/15/2006 3:01:07 A.M. Re: Management of Renal Failure?? -- Morris Update
I have an update on Morris this morning. First -- I had some of my 'facts' incorrect. Morris is 18 years old! He tested FeVL+ at one time but in 2003 he tested negative. Perhaps he managed to throw off the virus?? He was a feral initially but my friend has worked wonders with him. She runs her own business and is a one-woman operation so she really does not have time to join the group. This morning, he was like a new kitty! Apparently the antibiotics and fluidsare making a big difference. The tests show he doesn't have thyroid issues -- it's a bit low but that could be tied to the infection. The main tests for the kidneys hasn't come back but he will need sub-q fluids regardless of the results so they taught my friend to do that this morning. Two nurses were going to hold Morris while she did this - but my friend wouldn't have it. She told them to stand aside. She told Morris to stand still and he immediately stopped moving. She put the needle in and he said 'hu'...she told him to lay down and he did so immediately. Everyone at the vet's office was amazed. He was a perfect angel and I think the fact that he has complete trust in her and also the fact that he has lived this long speaks volumes about the care she has given him. They've told her to give him the fluids twice a day for nowif possible - and at least once a day if he won't let her do two. My friend said that yesterday she thought her boy was going to be leaving this world. The improvement in 24 hours is just amazing. He's eating well..walking around and not sleeping every few minutes...purring and rubbing his cheeks on things. He is very alert but gets tired easily. Hoping very much that the test from his kidneys will hold promise. Thank you all so much for the advice and encouragement. elizabeth

Re: groundhog
Thanks, Nina.
ot: Pauline
I have this big sign out front (not visible to humans)...that says 'sucker' over my front door. This must be true, otherwise, every feral cat and creature in the neighborhood wouldn't stop by Liz's Kitty Boutique and Day Spa (my official name for my front porch). Year before last, I noticed this possum on my porch railing. I named her Pauline. She would climb up the rose bush and hang out at night. She was so tame and so friendly. I was worried about her - I checked all her little feet and her fur to see if she was hurt because I just didn't think it was natural for a possum to be so unafraid. I did some research online and found the National Opossum Society and gave them a call. One of their experts called me and talked to me for about 45 minutes. I sent pictures so she could see if there was anything to be concerned about. She told me that Pauline had just come to trust me and that she felt safe there. She told me to feed her bananas because they just don't get enough potassium in their dietalso to feed her cheese so she would get enough calcium. She told me not to be surprised if Pauline had babies nearby. Pauline won't eat out of my hand but she comes very close. She will sniff the food in my hand and if I set it in front of her, she will eat it. She loves bananas and cheese...loves any kind of fruit. In time, Pauline came to trust me so much that she would let me pet her! I don't recommend this with just any possumas they have 50 very sharp teeth and their bite is every bit as dangerous as a feral cat's. When friends, neighbors, or family would come to visit - they would just friek when I pointed out my "pet possum", Pauline. They just wouldn't notice her there at first and couldn't believe how friendly she was. Last year, Pauline had two babies -- Pierre and Pinkerton. They are very trusting too and they like to hang out on the porch and love it when I give them treats. Mama Kitty stays on the porch a lot - she doesn't mind in the slightest if they help themselves to her food. One night last winter, I opened the door an startled one of the younger possums. He jumped right in the cat bed with Mama Kitty LOL Neither one of them seemed to mind the other. I know a lot of you are suckers for all creatures great and small too and thought you might get a kick out of my little story :-) Hope everyone has a good weekend. Yeah, I had heard on a radio program on cat's health and nutrition that taurine is so very important. The speaker even said that she thought it was a great immune booster. If Lucy is eating the baby food with the FF added in, that's great! Gypsy wouldn't touch the raw food with that and I had to add sups separately. I would definitely add the taureen though. N [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks, Nina, as always! I actually am just mixing in her raw food supplement from Feline Futures, which is meant to be added to boneless raw meat and so has the necessary calcium. It also has B vitamins added. I am also adding some of the Nu-cat vitamins which I got based on your turkey mush recipe. I will look at the porportions recommended in the email, though-- I had not thought about it, but they probably are different, at least the B vitamins, when the meat is cooked like in baby food. Also, I probably should add taurine, come to think of it, since that is not in the raw food supplement because it doesn't need to be. Thanks, Michelle

Re: groundhog
Michelle, Never doubt that animals know our thoughts and intentions, that groundhog knew you were trying to help her and appreciated it. Yes dying in the woods would have been a natural event for her but you showed her a side to humans she would otherwise not have known, that many do care about other living creatures. What you did was a compassionate, loving act for another living creature and that kind of gesture is always appreciated. And you did take her body back to her home in the end so you did all you could possibly do. The vet thing also disturbs me, what are these doctors thinking?? The rehabbers are always hard to get a hold of, I remember one time I heard a coyote in the woods behind the houses across the road from me, It was crying and I just knew it was trapped. I called all the rehabbers and animal control, animal control would do nothing and the rehabbers all had answering machines on. None of them ever got back to me. I never did find it and the crying stopped so I don't know what happened to it. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Management of Renal Failure?? -- Morris Update
Make sure they pay attention to his HCT, many CRF cats are anemic and many are on epogen. Fred was anemic but once we got his thyroid regulated he went back to being normal, his CRF got a bit worse but still not too bad. Once he gets his dental, and his thyroid is completely stabilized (it takes about 3 months after treatment so we have a month and a half to go), I'm hoping that will get better too, although one kidney is a little smaller than it should be so it will probably not go back to being normal. Apparently Fred's anemia was due to his hyperthyroid, not the CRF. Your friend has really done wonders with Morris and he sounds like a real sweetheart. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: groundhog
Michelle, What a wonderful thing you did for that poor little creature! And, I totally agree, the vets should be ashamed of themselves...I mean, don't they take the same oath as people Dr.s to "save all"? Out here in the country, we are loaded with rednecks hooligans that will purposely run over, sometimes even veering OFF the road, whatever living creature is in their path. One time I got a license number of some guy who purposely hit an animal, and when I called the police here, they wouldn't do a damn thing! I was just telling Nina today about the baby (wild) rabbit I took in before my accident. After talking more to Dennis this PM, I found out that it's mother was dead and so I took it in nursed it... Of course, it grew and was MUCH better while I was hospitalized so Dennis released it. Now, every time I see a bunny in my yard I wonder "Is that MY baby?" I am so glad I did intervene though. And, the rehabs would not touch a small baby Prayers for the groundhog, Lucy Gunnar. Hugs, Patti

I know it's odd -- but I've never had any creature use Liz's Kitty Boutique and Day Spa as a powder room. I haven't taken any precaution -- but I do keep some dry food out there and a few kitty beds (because some get more sun than others...some have more protection from rain). I have a gazillion porch plants out there too but everyone who visits has been very neat and respectable not only on the porch but in the yard around it too. Re: Please say a prayer for Lucy
Lucy has always been really fussy about food, and will not eat anything mixed with anything else, even if she would eat both separate. And she doesn't eat wet or dry food (she never liked wet and dry makes her sick now). The only thing she can eat is her raw diet or cooked turkey or duck. I have tried mixing the baby food with the raw and she looks at me like I am insane. Good suggestion though! My mom found some Beechnut at the supermarket near her, so I am going to get it and try mixing the two baby foods together, at least, to try to minimize the amount of corn starch she gets. She is eating some cooked turkey also, just ate a few pieces now, but she doesn't eat that much of it. Baby food is the only thing that really gets her going. She does seem to have gained an ounce or two since the other day though, knock on wood. Thanks, Michelle In a message dated 7/15/2006 2:35:19 P.M. Re: groundhog
That's awful, Belinda. Most vets will not touch wild animals, especially ones that can carry rabies. I am not sure if it is illegal here in NJ for regular vets to treat wildlife? I know that my local vet in MA, while not a great vet, was always willing to see if he could do something for any kind of animal, including wild animals. And I once found a vet on a road where I was driving who took a bird that I had found on the road and gave some meds to get it out of shock so i could get it to a rehabber, and had offered to rehab the bird himself if that did not work out. Actually, that was in NJ. I think it just depends on the vet. You know if we on this list were vets, we would be open 24 hours a day taking in everyone on earth! No, I didn't. I do always feel a little bad that you seem to think I am such a stress case. I mean, I am sometimes, but I think we all are when our babies are unwell. I don't really think I am more than others on this list. And I certainly have seen a whole lot of death in my life, and in the past 5 years have lost 9 animals. So I am not sure I need to see any more death to learn whatever I am supposed to learn about it. But I appreciate your sentiments that whatever happens is what was meant to be, for some reason or other.
