[Finale] Fin2k5b - Problems in loading Bill Duncan's chord library pack
Just after having read the very sad new about Bill's passing away, I ask about a problem I'm having loading his Chord library package, which I recently bought. I did as he wrote on the tutorial Chord Tips.pdf (page 3) to load the new library (save the present library, delete all the suffixes then load Bill's Chords.lib library). When I come to assigning a new suffix (chord manual input, advanced, select) nothing shows in the suffix panel! I see that ChordSym and ChordSuf fonts are installed in my system. The strange thing is that Bill talks about ChordSym/Suf.lib file but I see only a Chords.lib file in the folder I got from Bill. Is it the same file? Any hint appreciated. Thanks Marcello ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

It sounds like the library didn't load for some reason, or that the library you DID load did not contain suffixes. Try again. Try some different things, too. You should know that libraries are NOT cross-platform compatible, and it wouldn't surprise me if they stopped being cross-version compatible at some point. The best procedure, IMO, is to save the library yourself from a document that already has the chord suffixes (suffices?) in it, and then load THAT library. I see that ChordSym and ChordSuf fonts are installed in my system. The strange thing is that Bill talks about ChordSym/Suf.lib file but I see only a Chords.lib file in the folder I got from Bill. Re: [Finale] Smart line bug in 2007a?
At 02:38 AM 12/18/2006, dc wrote: But then, I was using VERTICAL smart lines (brackets, actually). So the logic of all this completely escapes me in this particular case. I don't think it matters if you were *using* the smart shape vertically -- Finale still stores L and R attachment points. In this case, the values happen to be the same. If you move an endpoint of a smart shape horizontally, you are changing the base definition of the shape and it will move in the score and parts. By the way, try taking an unlinked smart shape in a part and dragging it diagonally down and to the right. You'll notice that the shape in the score only moves horizontally to the right -- Finale is still able to store the different vertical displacements from the new attachment points. [Finale] Re: linked parts: cues
Actually, the most pathological case is when there is all of the above *plus* clef changes for the cue. You have to create a separate staff style to hide the clef change, and this creates a whole new set of challenges. The easiest staff style is a transposition that does nothing but set the clef. wouldn't it be easier to coordinate by setting up the clef staff style for the parts already with transpositions? C treble, C bass, C alto, Bb treble, Bb bass, same for F... etc. as needed. with the 1st 7 styles you would solve the majority of the cases and don't have to deal with double-transpositions. you also don't really have to think about it, apply the combined transposition/clef style you want it to show as. and since the cues don't show in the score, you could do this directly in the score (with display in C off) before applying the hide cue style for the score. then in parts, turn on colours, show staff styles and names, and do the old switcheroo (the oldest trick in the book, 86) to the appropriate measures with the show-cue/hide layer 1 full measure rest. But such staff styles are required to be assigned to full measures, and if the instrument is transposing you have to have a special transposing staff style with the force clef. It can lead to some serious outside-the-shipping-carton thinking. you can erase staff styles from partial measures, although this only works in around 98% of the cases i have tried it in, can't figure out why in the other 2% it doesn't work. -- shirling neueweise ... new music publishers mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] :.../ http://newmusicnotation.com ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

The problem is certainly not intractable: just a bit messy. Remember, for cues you will likely need clef changes even for instruments that do not usually have clef changes, like Eb Alto Sax, A Clarinet, and Piccolo. Btw, if you use C scores, this plan fails entirely. I have been toying with going back to C scores, esp. for chamber works. In these cases, I actually leave Display in Concert Pitch off and have a transposed copy of each staff of each transposing instrument. The score shows only the non-transposing staves while the parts for the transposing instruments show the transposed staves. It is a compromise, but a pretty decent compromise, esp. if only a few staves transpose. you can erase staff styles from partial measures, although this only works in around 98% of the cases i have tried it in, Even if you manage to pierce one of the many chinks in Finale's armor and erase a partial measure of a clef-transposing style, it does you no good. If the staff style is assigned at the beginning of the measure, clef changes are suppressed throughout the measure. And I believe I recall that if you assign it not at the beginning it has no effect: or wierd effects. Plugins can easily assign any staff style to any partial measure, and I played with this awhile back. I prefer to find workarounds that exploit Finale's documented feature set rather than those that exploit quirky behaviors that easily may not survive in the next release. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

with the 1st 7 styles you would solve the majority of the cases You also need octave transposition ones for double bass, in particular. but then you could simply cough cough transpose the cue. Remember, for cues you will likely need clef changes even for instruments that do not usually have clef changes, like Eb Alto Sax, A Clarinet, and Piccolo. yeah sure, but the majority of the cases would ne quick and dirty. piccolo can be transposed an octave as well. unless you are using 8ve-treble and 8vb-bass clefs, then you would in fact have to defined even more styles. it is so widespread to NOT use those little 8-clefs anyways (the greater the reduction the conductor score, the more they get lost in the deatil in any case) that this is not an issue for me, i don't use them. Btw, if you use C scores, this plan fails entirely. yes too many things that don't work properly or at all; fortunately it is still widely-accepted and even appreciated when you provide transposed scores to conductors. the piece i am working on has massive microtonal glissandi, often arou dthe same pitches, so it would be (would have been) good for a C-score to better visualize this. -- shirling neueweise ... new music publishers mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] :.../ http://newmusicnotation.com ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

when i place a smart shape (dotted tempo accel. line) in the score, cmd-ctl-clik and make it hide in the score but show in all parts, it works fine, but when copying to another staff (mass edit tool) the smart shape is hidden in the score AND in the part of the target staff. is it intentional that it functions this way? -- shirling neueweise ... new music publishers mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] :.../ http://newmusicnotation.com ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Hi Will, Obviously you should not have modified the User Manual files. You can do a custom re-install of Finale that includes just the User Manual, and that's what I suggest you do. You can then open the User Manual from the Help menu in Finale. You may also want to try installing Adobe Reader 8 before you do this. Andrew Stiller wrote ... I purchased 2K7 a while back but have not installed it because it is so buggy. Speaking of buggy 2007... I was in Andrew's camp until I bought a new machine (Windows), and rather than fool with the de-registration, etc., I just installed the 2007 a month ago November. As I reported on Thanksgiving eve, files I created anew in 2007 would print only postage-sized pages. I could print a few normal pages if I started off printing one page at a time, but if I tried to print a whole document, then even going back to one page at a time results in the posage stamps. Cutting down to 300 DPI ges me double size the postage-samp. This is not a printer driver problem, as I get the same results on laser and inkjet, and the same for CutePDF output. Only saving to TIF output works correctly. Files begun in an earlier version of Finale and modified in Win2007 print correctly. Hi Jef - Nope. Not possible so far. Waiting for someone to write a plugin that would do this, if that is even possible. This is a big argument for separate parts. I am hovering between the two systems - have been for months now. Each has advantages and disadvantages for my work. When the parts layout can be copied from part to part, then linked parts will win. [Finale] OT: Two PC questions
Before I ask this question, I just wanted to say I was deeply moved by Karen's post about Bill whom I never had a chance to know. Anyway, I am in a situation that I have to make old HP Vectra P450MHz/ 512MB/USB1.0 work with Plextor PX-740UF to have DVD movie playback. It didn't come with DVD movie viewer so I downloaded VLC. It terribly stutters, both video and audio. Totally unusable. Question 1: Do you think buying USB2.0 PCI would solve this problem? Do I need to purchase WinDVD? Any other alternative for DVD movie player? Question 2: Having my wife's Thinkpad dead, I need to buy her a new one sometime soon. She likes new HP with huge display and more importantly 10 keypad, which is a nice feature. They are quite expensive for what I can afford. I have been away from PC market too long and I don't know who is running well these days after my favorite IBM is gone. Is Toshiba still doing well? I tried Sony in a store and I still don't like it. HP notebook is something I never considered a few years ago. Are they good? I am looking for advise from someone who has experiences with different kinds of notebook PCs.
