Re: [Finale] Glyph issues with Aruvarb

2018-08-11 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi Steve,

Thanks! The problem actually turned out to be a perfect storm of user error:

1) I was not aware that Unicode fonts, like Aruvarb, must NOT be added to
MacSymbolFonts.txt or they will not display correctly.

2) I had Aruvarb included in the MacSymbolFonts.txt file in my MacHD/Library…
folder, and since the font was working for me, I concluded that this meant the
font SHOULD be included in MacSymbolFonts.txt.

3) But as it turns out, the MacSymbolFonts.txt I was looking at was actually
being overriden by the MacSymbolFonts.txt in my user Library… folder — and in
that version, Aruvarb was NOT included in the file.

As a result of the above, I gave the incorrect instructions to my collaborator
that the font needed to be included in MacSymbolFonts.txt, when in fact the
opposite was true. My bad!

Cheers,

[Finale] Glyph issues with Aruvarb

2018-08-11 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hello list,

Am I right that that there are others on this list who are using Aruvarb (Jan
Angermüller’s adaptation of Bravura for Finale) as their music font?

If so, could I ask about a strange problem I have encountered?

I’m sharing files using Aruvarb with a collaborator. I’m using the most recent
OTF version of Aruvarb — this version of the font is billed as Windows-only —
it is missing the characters in slots 129-159 in macOS — but other than that it
works for my purposes, as those characters are duplicated in other slots.

My collaborator has installed the same version of Aruvarb on his iMac, but when
he opens my Finale files, most of the glyphs show up as a boxed “?”. We are
both running Finale v25.5 on macOS.

Curiously, the glyphs do display correctly on his laptop, but not on his iMac.
The glyphs also show up correctly in Finale 2014.5 on both machines.

We have tried:

- adding Aruvarb to the MacSymbolFonts.txt file
- removing the OTF version of Aruvarb and installing the TTF version
- clearing the macOS font cache from the Terminal, then restarting the iMac
- reinstalling Finale

We have also tried removing this version and installing the older, deprecated
version of Aruvarb available from the elbsound site, which is supposed to be
fully macOS compatible. When we do, we have the opposite problem — most glyphs
show up correctly for my collaborator, but on my MacBook Pro, many symbols are
mapped incorrectly. For instance, on my system, glyph #250, which is supposed
to be the half note glyph, is a parenthesized downbow-upbow pair.

I vaguely recall having this problem when I first installed Aruvarb, but for
the life of me I cannot recall what I did to fix it. It’s also very mysterious
that the glyphs display correctly on my collaborator’s laptop but not his iMac
— both are running the same OS (macOS 10.12.6) and the same version of Finale.

Any assistance or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

[Finale] Glissando (tab slide) smart line playback in HP

2018-01-20 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

Is there any way to get Human Playback to correctly play back glissandos
(straight gliss line using “tab slide” smart shape) when there are notes that
are both the endpoint of one gliss and the beginning of another?

The results are fine when the tab slide just connects two pitches, but as soon
as you want to gliss from an arrival note to another note, the results are
invariably catastrophic.

I've tried moving the notation to a hidden layer, which lets me split arrival
notes into two tied notes (which kinda sorta works, sometimes). But then adding
a display-only layer that also includes the necessary glissandos for display
screws up the gliss playback of the hidden layer, even with "Playback"
unchecked in the display-only layer.

Any solution that does not involve making a separate file for playback?

Re: [Finale] 3/2 vs. 6/4

2016-12-13 Thread Darcy James Argue
The difference between a barline accent and an internal semi-stressed bear is
not subtle! And if we are talking about a musical gesture which extends a
phrase from 4/4 to 6/4 (or 3/2), chopping that extended measure up into three
smaller measures obscures rather than clarifies.

Really, the only reason to object to 6/4 subdivided 2+2+2 is that it's (mildly)
unconventional. But conventions can and should evolve over time along with the
music.

Please note that I'm not saying that 3/2 is *never* the right choice when you
want 2+2+2. Only that (especially in a multi-metric piece where every other
time sig is x/4 and the pulse does not change) there are many good reasons why
a contemporary composer might prefer 6/4 instead of 3/2 to indicate duple
meter. That honestly doesn't seem like it ought to be such a controversial
statement.

Cheers,

Breaking up the bar asymmetrically like that might work in certain situations,
but there are many cases where it will not, and 6/4 really is the best answer.

YMMV as they say, but I never lose any sleep over using a binary 6/4 and it has

Hi all,

The conventional answer is 3/2, because as you say, traditionally 6/4 is
compound meter.

I personally ignore this convention for exactly the reason you describe — that
it suggests that the underlying X/4 pulse changes, and that is unintentional.
In a mixed-meter piece, going from 4/4 to 3/4 to 5/4 to 3/2 causes needless
confusion.

Sometimes, conventions are dumb.

Re: [Finale] Install Finale 2010 on Mac OS Siera 10.12

Hi Mike,

All new Macs come with macOS Sierra and it’s not possible to install an older
OS. Finale 2010 is definitely not supported on Sierra. If you buy a new Mac you
will also need to upgrade to Finale v25.

Hi folks. Want to buy a new computer, but don't want to upgrade to Finale

Anyone know for sure that I can?

[Finale] iKey/yKey replacement — must have simulated mouse clicks

2016-10-27 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

It seems that simulated mouse clicks no longer work in yKey (formerly iKey) as
of OS X 10.11 — at least, I have not been able to get them to work.

Is there a replacement Mac macro app that does simulated mouse clicks that
works correctly under El Capitan and Sierra?

I know Keyboard Maestro is well-regarded and (notwithstanding the name)
simulated mouse clicks are advertised as being part of the feature set, but
could anyone confirm that this feature does in fact work in 10.11 and 10.12?

Cheers,

Re: [Finale] Printing 8.5"x11" PDF 2-up to 12"x18" paper

2016-10-11 Thread Darcy James Argue
Yes, but that process is extremely slow and cumbersome when working with a
large number of files.

I found this solution, which is very good and speeds things up considerably.
It’s still a 2-step solution, which is less than ideal. And and it’s not smart
enough to automatically switch to Straight Page Order for 2-page originals when
printing in Folded Booklet Order (so you have to manually exclude 2-page
originals) but it’s FAR better than doing it manually.

[Finale] Printing 8.5"x11" PDF 2-up to 12"x18" paper

2016-10-10 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hello,

Does anyone have a good solution for printing 8.5”x11” PDFs 2-up onto 12”x18”
paper that both enlarges the image the correct amount and preserves equidistant
margins?

The app Bookbinder’s Collator does this perfectly when making booklets, but it
is not able to do regular 2-up. And neither Preview nor Adobe Reader seem to
offer sufficient control over the enlargement or the inner margins.

Re: [Finale] yKey (iKey) "Move To" shortcuts no longer work in 10.11

Hi Chuck,

Thanks. I seem to recall you having serious issues with SmartScroll in the
past, no?

Also, can any current yKey users confirm?

How do Mac users who use a trackpad as their primary input device deal with
this issue? Scrolling with the trackpad in Page View has been horribly broken
in Finale for a while now, but there is no keyboard shortcut to advance or
retreat in Scroll View by one measure.

[Finale] yKey (iKey) "Move To" shortcuts no longer work in 10.11

2016-09-24 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

I know Apple just released macOS 10.12 but I just recently upgraded to OS X
10.11.6 and am still trying to work out all the kinks.

One major kink is that yKey (formerly iKey) shortcuts that involve simulating
mouse movements (“Move To”) no longer seem to work.

I’m not sure if any yKey users have found a solution to this?

The only Finale command I need a simulated mouse click for is to
advance/retreat one measure in Scroll View — but I REALLY need a keyboard
shortcut for that, as trying to accurately scroll right or left using a Magic
Trackpad is still basically impossible, even in Finale v25.

Since Finale does not have a menu command or a built-in shortcut key for
advance/retreat one measure, the only way to get a shortcut for this is to
simulate a mouse click on the measure forward/back buttons. But OS X 10.11
seems to have rendered that part of yKey non-functional… unless I’m missing
something?

[Finale] Shortening the Tool Palette in MacFin25

2016-09-18 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

Getting set up with Mac Finale v25 for the first time, and it seems that there
isn’t any way to shorten the Tool Palette?

I believe ever since I began using Finale (3.0), it has been possible to
eliminate tools from the tool set by resizing it. I keep mine in a single
horizontal strip, and would like to eliminate the (useless) Zoom Tool and Hand
Grabber Tool from my Tool Palette. In every other version, I have done this by
programming a custom tool set that those tools positioned to the far right of
the palette, then dragging to the left to shorten the palette by two positions.

In v25, if I do this, the palette resizes itself into two horizontal rows.
After that, you can shorten to your heart’s content, but unless I’m missing
something, there does not seem to be any way to shorten the Tool Palette when
it is a single horizontal strip.

Cheers,

had had already tried Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Application
Support, and ~/Library/Preferences, but it turns out there are also files in
Library/Audio that need to be removed to get a clean reinstall. (ARIA really
needs to come with an uninstaller.)

I also had to remove all sample files.

After that, doing a complete reinstall in the following order worked:

GPO4
JABB3
Finale 2014.5 (Garritan Instruments and ARIA player)
ARIA Player v1.872

An absolute nightmare that took untold hours, but at least I’ve got the GPO and
JABB instruments back.

In future, it would be nice to know if there were a less brute-force method.

Cheers,

So after a complete reinstall of JABB (including reverting to Aria 1.091), the
Aria player *still* only recognizes “Finale Default Bank.” I tried removing all
Aria and Plogue items from Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Application
Support and ~/Library/Preferences and reinstalling Arian 1.091 and the only

Hi all,

Can someone explain what the trick is to get the latest version of ARIA Player
to recognize GPO4 and JABB3?

I’ve followed the instructions here:

http://makemusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5381/~/setting-up-garritan-sound-libraries-in-finale-and-printmusic

The result is that instrument libraries show up as options in Finale 2014.5,
but the instrument samples don’t load.

I’ve also tried directing ARIA (latest version) to my Applications folder,
which contains the “Garritan Jazz and Big Band 3” and “Garritan Personal
Orchestra 4” folders. These libraries then show up as “User” libraries in the
ARIA player but the samples still don’t load.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Re: [Finale] grace notes in voiced linked parts

2016-03-08 Thread Darcy James Argue
Rather than extract the parts, you could add new hidden staves to the score and
copy/explode the instruments to separate staves — plugins make this easier.

That way you can at least keep all of the parts in the same file, which makes
updating and printing them much, much easier.

Re: [Finale] Finale failings

2016-02-15 Thread Darcy James Argue
Craig,

When the two chords are stacked vertically, with a horizontal line separating
them, they are played as a polychord, e.g.

F#
—
C

Chord inversions and chords with an alternate bass are both displayed with a
diagonal slash, e.g.,

F#/C

(Sometimes the alternate bass is subscript but the important variables here are
the diagonal slash and the lack of vertical stacking.)

F#/C#min7 isn't directly supported by the Chord Tool but there are several
simple workarounds, including entering either the slash or the chord suffix as

I have no idea what you are talking about.

"• Alternate Bass: Type a slash (/), an underscore (SHIFT+hyphen), or a bar
symbol (|) to indicate whether an alternate bass note should appear next to,
below, or slightly to the right of the chord, respectively. Finale knows that
what you type after the slash, underscore or bar is the alternate bass note for
the chord."

[Finale] 12x18 booklet printing workflow

2015-08-26 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

So after a year and a half of owning a Ricoh AP6330N, I have — somewhat
sheepishly — just today discovered it can actually handle 12"x18" paper. (I had
until now just assumed that it had the same size limitations as its
predecessor, the Ricoh AP2610, which maxed out at 11"x17". In retrospect this
was really, really dumb.)

Obviously that is a bit of a game changer for me! I have previously been
printing on individual 9"x12" sheets and taping them using the VPC machine.
This is no longer necessary (or remotely desirable) now that I know I can print
directly to 12"x18".

I'm curious what people's workflow is to create booklet parts on a Mac —
presumably it's best print to PDF first, then use booklet software to assemble
the 12x18 signatures? Are there apps that people would recommend for this
purpose? I have Bookbinder's Collator, but it's not the most intelligent piece
of software I've ever used.

Cheers,

- DJA

Thanks. I have barely scratched the surface of JW Change, but the ability to
set notation to not affect spacing is a life-saver. I'll look into using it to

Re: [Finale] Special tools custom stem tool & triplets

2015-08-23 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi Steve,

I'm also surprised you can't reproduce.

With these steps, I can reproduce 100% of the time:

1) Create a tuplet — in 4/4, a half-note triplet would be best because it fills
the bar.

2) Using the custom stem tool, apply a blank shape to the stem of the first
tuplet.

3) Copy that measure to another measure, either vertically or horizontally.

4) The tuplet has been deleted and a new measure has been created to house the
overflow half note.

Re: [Finale] Special tools custom stem tool & triplets

2015-08-23 Thread Darcy James Argue
As far as I can tell, Mass Copy does not copy entires. I would first have to
copy the entries. Doing so results in the overflow tuplets going into a (newly
created) measure added to the score after the target measure, so — unless
there's a trick I'm not aware of — Mass Copy does not help.

Shortening the stem does not hide the flag.

It's not possible to create a stemless notes staff style that only affects a

[Finale] Special tools custom stem tool & triplets

2015-08-23 Thread Darcy James Argue
So this is a very annoying bug with no workaround that I can think of…

I am trying to show a 12-tone series on a part for an improvising soloist. I
also want to show a cued bass line in the same measure.

The part is in 4/4 so the 12-tone row is in eighth-note triplets in layer 3. I
want those notes to be stemless. But I want to show the stems on the cued bass
line, in layer 4. So I create the stemless notes the old-fashioned way, using
the Custom Stem Tool and a blank shape, breaking all the triplet beams, and
hiding the triplet numbers and brackets. So far, so good.

The problem comes when it is time to copy this notation to another measure.
When a custom stem has been applied to the first triplet in the measure,
copying it causes the triplet to be deleted and the first three eighth notes of
the 12-tone row come in as regular (non-triplet) eighth notes. (The other
triplets come in correctly — only the first triplet in the measure is affected.)

Needless to say, this is a bit of a nightmare. The only workaround I can think
of is leaving the regular stem in place for the first triplet, copying this
notation everywhere I need it (which is many, many places), and then, once all
of the copy operations are complete, going back and applying the custom stem
measure-by-measure as needed.

Can anyone (A) confirm this bug and (B) think of a better workaround?

Re: [Finale] disable human playback

2015-08-23 Thread Darcy James Argue
The Apply Human Playback plugin in its current form is a disaster. It's utterly
unusable. The MIDI data it writes is completely different from the data HP
actually employs during live playback. I don't know why this is — it used to
work much better than it does.

The only current solution for creating an audio mockup that mixes swing and
non-swing playback is to export the audio file twice, once with swing on and
once with swing off, then combine the two using an audio editor. I recommend
adding two bards of quarter-note cross-stick click out front on both files to
help you align them.

Needless to say this is extremely tedious.

[Finale] HP "Processing Glissandi & Bends" with HP Style "Jazz"

2015-08-22 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

Has anyone observed the following behavior?

With HP set to "Standard", HP pre-playback processing takes a normal amount of
time.

With HP set to "Jazz," HP seems to stall on "Processing Glissandi & Bends,"
taking up to 30 seconds to complete this step of the pre-playback processing,
even on a relatively short piece?

Unchecking Interpret: Glissandi and Bends in the HP Custom Style dialog box has
no effect.

FinMac2014d. (The file probably requires some smart shape glissandi and/or
bends to trigger the issue.)

Hi John,

There are notes in Layer 1 in other staves that need to be taken into account

Re: [Finale] Windows Surface Pro 3/StaffPad Update

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the frank update. Your impressions match up with those of a
colleague of mine, who had been quite enthusiastic about migrating from Mac OS
X to a Windows-based machine, but ultimately ended up really regretting the
move.

Should you opt for the repair and continue to use the device, I'd be curious
whether having Windows 10 changes your impressions at all, and also whether you
find Finale useable on the tablet.

In case you're taking requests — is there any way the plugin could
automatically tighten the space between ledger lines on reduced-note size

Human Playback style -> choose "Custom" from the drop-down menu and un-check

Hi Jef,

In my experience, Finale is very unstable with MIDI Thru set to off. I set it
to a Fixed channel that is not in use (like, channel 99, for example).

Probably won't help with performance but might help with stability.

Finale also seems to do best with a minimum of 30 GB of free HD space. When my

Re: [Finale] OT: Low end Surface Pro 3 with StaffPad

2015-07-06 Thread Darcy James Argue
Keep in mind the Surface 3 is actually a much newer machine than the Surface 3
Pro — the Surface 3 Pro was released over a year ago, while the Surface 3 came
out in May of this year. While the Pro machine has more raw power, the Surface
3 has the benefit of an additional year's worth of R&D, which is a lifetime
when it comes to these devices.

Also keep in mind that the Surface 4 Pro is expected in August.

[Finale] Audio tracks and tempo alterations

2015-07-02 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hello,

It seems that when you add an audio track to Finale and then attempt to change
the tempo by using or modifying a tempo change expression, no change occurs.
You have to delete the audio track and then re-load it for the tempo changes to
take effect. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a documented bug?

Long glissandos — especially those that pass through stems without noteheads —
often require ties for playback so that the note doesn't reattack.

Hi Jim,

#4 or #11 is the standard way of writing this harmony. In jazz, 7(#11) chords

Re: [Finale] Bb7b4

2015-06-18 Thread Darcy James Argue
"Bb7b4" is not a standard chord symbol. A "flatted fourth" would be identical
to a major third, which is already in the chord.

Did you mean "Bb7#4"? If so, that would more typically be written with the
alteration bracketed by parentheses: "Bb7(#4)".

Yes. In HP Preferences > Inst. Techniques > Garritan: Jazz, Big Band & Marching

Playback — it essentially results in the note being all but silenced.

Does anyone know if there is any way to edit the HP dictionary so that "fp" is
removed, or otherwise preventing the expression from having any HP effect? I'd
much rather it do nothing than do what it does.

Cheers,

If your keyboard has a pitch bend wheel, move it all the way up or down and

Re: [Finale] StaffPad has released a great update! (lengthy update to my previous review)

2015-05-12 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi Craig,

I think you will find a lot of people on this list who disagree with you about
the desirability of "capturing that last 1% of engraving sophistication."
(Starting with whether it is actually 1% or more like 10% or more.) To give but
one example, having an application that could apply something like Patterson
Beams by default, without having to invoke a plug-in, would be hugely
attractive to me and to a great many other people.

The fact is that the quality of music notation generated by the average user of
Finale or Sibelius is still extremely poor. Having music notation software that
was designed from the ground up to quietly guide the novice user towards more
professional-looking results, while also allowing experienced engravers room to
customize, would be incredibly advantageous.

I've had the opportunity to try StaffPad briefly, and while I agree it is
extremely impressive, it's not remotely an engraving tool. It's an input tool.
It certainly meets the needs of lots of people who only require an input tool.
But IMO there is still plenty of room in the market for a serious engraving
tool. At least, I hope there is!

Hi David,

Of course any serious user would not be giving up Finale or Sibelius. But
having the pen-entry front end on a tablet is, for me, the exciting part. I
know I could also just do the note entry directly into Finale on a Surface Pro,
but realistically that also requires a keyboard, a numberpad, and a MIDI
keyboard, whereas StaffPad requires none of those things.

Of course, but that would require a separate device. The whole appeal of this

Re: [Finale] StaffPad (for Windows Surface Pro 3)

2015-04-07 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi Robert,

It's true I am a lifelong Mac user (since the 1984 Macintosh!) but I'll admit
that the idea that I could take a tablet that's as powerful as my current
laptop, plunk it on the music stand of any piano, write music directly
on-screen with a pen, and then easily bounce that output to Finale — running on
the same device — is pretty appealing.

Currently, when I'm on the road, I have to haul around a backpack with my
laptop, a 2-octave MIDI keyboard, a bunch of cables and chargers, etc. I
usually have access to a room with a piano, but then I've also got to have a
desk or table where I can set up my laptop and MIDI keyboard and phone (used as
a numeric keypad)… plus a nearby power source because my laptop's battery
doesn't hold a charge well anymore — it takes a little while to set everything
up, and then pack it up again when I'm done. I'm always going back and forth
between using the piano to try out ideas, then inputting notes into Finale
using the MIDI keyboard (sometimes awkwardly if there's a lot of
octave-shifting), the numeric keypad app on my phone is always losing
connectivity, and so on… it's a slow and cumbersome way to write.

If there was a way I could instead just sit down at any piano and reach into my
bag and pull out a slim tablet computer with a stylus and just start writing…
in a format that imports easily into Finale… that honestly sounds like a minor
miracle to me.

In all honestly, I will probably wait and see what Windows 10 is like before
deciding. Obviously it would be a huge, disruptive switch, and I'd want to go
into it with both eyes open. But replacing my aging MacBook Pro with a high-end
Surface Pro tablet is not out of the question.

Cheers,

[Finale] Fin2014 — custom smart lines attach to beats?

2015-04-06 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

As of Finale 2014, newly created custom smart lines default to attaching to
noteheads. Is there a way to force them to attach to beats instead? It seems
that only the pre-defined smart shapes are capable of being beat-attached?

Also (perhaps related): custom smart lines do not seem to copy even when both
types of Smart Shapes are selected in the Filter.

Re: [Finale] "Change Instrument" in FinMac2014?

2015-04-05 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi Craig,

You should certainly be using the Change Instrument feature. For starters, it
greatly simplifies part creation, and allows for mid-system instrument changes.
There is this one playback issue I described (which I don't recall being a
problem prior to Finale 2014) but certainly the benefits FAR, FAR outweigh this
one particular drawback.

I should clarify that I mean "use the Change Instrument feature to create an
instrument change mid-piece," rather than selecting the entire staff and
changing the instrument for the entire duration.

Hi all,

Can anyone else confirm that if you use the "Change Instrument" feature in
Finale 2014 to switch to an instrument double, the new instrument does not
respond to any dynamics or hairpins? (N.B. I have Human Playback on and am

Also, one small point — the Atom x7-Z8700 processor used in the Surface 3
(non-pro) is actually quad-core, not single-core (though in any case it's not
going to perform as well as an i5).

Hi David,

Thanks, this is all extremely helpful!

Also, since you are Surface Pro user, I assume you've heard about StaffPad?
Looks like a very interesting new pen-based notation product, especially for
times where I'm away from my home MIDI keyboard setup.

Hello all,

Has anyone been running Finale for Windows on the Surface Pro 3 tablet, and if
so… how's that been going for you?

Also, any prognostication on how Fin2014 would perform on the just-announced

Re: [Finale] Does anybody think MM will ever fix the F2014 HP problems?

2015-03-31 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

I'm actually wondering whether anyone has any solutions to the fp problem in
Fin2014, which is actually becoming a real problem for me.

The "Set Rhythmic Feel to 0%" workaround is okay for the note-cutout problem,
but the only solution I know to the almost-silent fp's is to put the notation
in a layer set to not play back, then enter the music in a hidden layer with no
fp's.
