[Finale] Mac 2014.5 confusion
I'm feeling brain dead. I can't find some of the commands and menu items I've been used to. It's very disorienting! These are things I have used for years, and cannot locate in the version of Finale Mac 2014 Where is the "hide empty staves"? Where is the command to keep the staff spacing you made in scroll view when you go to page view I think I remember that it was something like "retain spacing in page view" but I'm probably wrong. I am using command x to delete just the notes in a single measure (or more than one) when there is notation in the other staves. I've been using this version right along, and then went to template I haven't used before and I can't find any of these commands. Please help! There is a half note in the top layer, and two quarters in layer 2. The quarter note under the half note is "offset" and if I use the method you describe it does, in fact , move notes horizontally... but it moves them still offset. Just FYI. Interesting discovery, though. I original had both soprano line and alto line on layer one, with common stems. When I removed the alto notes and added them back in with a a quarter note MOVING part, the original layer one kept a "ghost" note, so that the new layer 2 note was offset... offset from the "ghost" note. To fix it, I had to delete the entries for the whole measure and re-enter the two layers, to get rid of the offset. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu

[Finale] Weird behavior in mac Fin 2012
I am baffled by a strange behavior in a Finale 2012. Very specific. I have a couple of scores I'm working on where this hassuddenly started happening. I go to the expression tools (the one with the mf as an icon) and click on a place in the score where I want to place a dynamic or expression. That is, I double click to get the page open to select the dynamic or whatever I want. But the minute I double click, the page, the whole score, disappears... closeslot of code, is gone. Then I get a dialog box that doesn't say what I did wrong, but tjere os am emote;;gob;e box and a line that says "This report will automatically be sent to Apple. And there's a button to reopen the page. I save automatically every few minutes, but worse than losing recent work, it won't let me enter a dynamic or expression. Other tools, like text and chord, etc. work just fine. I double click to put in text, and it works perfectly. All the other clickable work. Only the expression tool behaves this way. And it's the same on all three scores I'm working on. And since it has been working for several years until yesterday... Yikes. Anyone experience this behavior? I'm not sure what to do at this point. I have Finale 2014 (which I don't like) and I guess I could try opening one of the scores in that later version to see if it's a Mac problem or a finale problem. I suspect the latter. But I thought I'd see if anyone else has dealt with this. Thanks! Re: [Finale] missing simple entry palettes
I guess I asked it badly. Actually, I did get the rest palette set in prefs, but both the rests and the notes disappear every time you go to another tool. So if you want it back you have to make an extra "move" to click on "simple entry" icon in the main palette. Why would they do that? My computer interface specialist son tells me that software creators keep changing things around, adding bells and whistles, altering the graphics renaming tools, etc. not just to sell new "improved" versions of the software, but because younger users love variety and are very flexible about changes. I hate it when perfectly good, usable things change just for the sake of change, but I guess I'll blame it on what my little grandson calls my "oldness." ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu

I'm trying to put a repeat sign (not the repeat carline, but the symbol consisting of the diagonal line with two dots on either side) in an empty measure. A "repeat the previous measure" symbol. But I want to put it in a measure where it is the only thing displayed. (I have disabled the "display rests in empty measures, but it doesn't seem to make any difference anyway.) Finale will allow me to put an expression into that measure, but I can't find that symbol in the expression tool menu. I CAN find it in the articulation tool menu, but Finale will not let me put an articulation in an empty measure. I can enter a "hard whole note rest" in those measures, but I don't want it to show along with the repeat mark. [Finale] Score Printing Question
Hi, Finale people, I am getting some large orchestra scores ready for printing, and it has been a long time since I outsourced this and had scores printed and bound by an actual print shop. This was in the 90s and pre-digital, ad I know everything has changed. For the past few decades I have been writing and printing scores and parts for use in recording sessions, and both traditional legal and letter size paper, and printing in my own studio laser printer for that work. When I have sent scores or parts out for others to print (other performer grips) I have sent out pdfs of my finale files, but they were always the usual 81/2 x 11 (or 14) format, and that was fine for studio work, and, to some degree, for performance. Parts look fine in that format, but scores are better in the larger, wider format. Now I have recently returned to writing (and re-issuing) some larger orchestral works, and "legal"-length paper, which is fine for legal work, is not the best for full orchestra scores. My old, commercially printed scores, vary in size and shape, so I'm not sure what would be best for these new scores. I wold love information for those of you who are in the U.S. and have had scores printed in a larger format. What dimensions do you find best for large or fairly large full orchestra? How do you go about getting them printed and bound. If you have them done by a commercial printer, I would be particularly interested in sources in the New Yokr, L.A., or San Francisco areas. That said, in this digital age, these things can be done anywhere, so any information about the successful procedures done anywhere would be much appreciated. I suppose providing music for download and print, I will have to stick with legal-size paper for scores, but I'd like to have the option of a more usable, readable size and format to make physical scores. Thanks in advance for any advice or information. Optimize is now hide empty measures and it's found in the menu bar under staff (with the staff tool in use) at the bottom of the list. You muse select the range of measures hyou want... um... optimized... and it will hide the empty measures. It won't hide any empty measures containing hard whole rests, and sometimes I've had to go through and delete those that have been put there either inadvertently or with some new helpful feature of Fiknale. Re: [Finale] Whatever happened to Optimise?
Don, sorry for the long rant previously. There is a fill in rests (or some such) feature that you can turn off, but that doesn't account for the inadvertent whole rests. I may be entering them without knowing, in some way. But so far, when I finish a score and want to optimize, I select all, do the hide empty measures thing, and then go through the score and manual delete delete whatever is there in the empty measure staves that show up. there are usually only a few, but they do mess up the formatting if I don't fix them. Re: [Finale] Whatever happened to Optimise?
Hi, Don, It's a mystery why sometimes hide empty measures leaves some empty stave showing. It's always because there is *something* in those measures. I assume it is a stray hard whole rest, but it could be something else. My orchestra scores are pretty huge, and in the later finale versions, very cumbersome to deal with. Score Manager is unstable (I use playback to check for errors, and sometimes a staff I have set to trumpet might come out as kazoo or something, requiring me to go into score manager and fix it, even though it looks fine. I can't explain that either. The hard rests? Not from importing MIDI (which is one of those this way lies madness things I try to avoid. I don't really use MIDI unless I'm writing something that will be recorded and then I generally develop a tempo map in MIDI to use with pro tools. But even that has gone south in the newer versions of finale. It used to be that we could import a MIDI file (made from Finale) into ProTools and see all the instruments as graphics and anticipate when to punch in or anticipate an entry. I don't record synthesized instruments, only live. But it's nice to be able to see them represented on the screen in ProTools. But the later versions of Finale create MIDI files a) without instrument names, 2) out of score order and b) a slew of extra staves--probably from unused Finale layers It used to be really simple. Now it's complicated and it doesn't work. That, plus a dozen other things about the newer versions are NOT improvements in my book. I have the same quarrel with a lot of software. Why do new versions give commands and tools a different name from the last version (like optimize vs. hide empty measures) and scatter the tools into unfamiliar menu lists, and why make the graphics of the speedy windows sexier and harder to read? It used to be that added elements were great, and showed that the Finale folks were listening to the users. But like some other programs (MS Word comes to mind) it has gotten so complex, even in fairly simple use, that it's mind boggling. Again, I'm complaining about something that has changed my life by freeing me from the pen/pencil and paper thing. But it's a mystery why the people who sit around thinking up ways to make the software better (code for being able to sell a new version when the old one still work, maybe?) think we want to relearn programs we are used to and love. End of rant. BTW I use simple entry, using a menthol I've developed over the years I use Speedy for some moves bu Speedy just never spoke to me, though I have many friends and colleagues who swear by it. I think what happens is that one gets used to the way a software works (especially when it works well) and when menus change, the look changes, or tools are renamed, it feels unfamiliar and takes getting used to. Patsy, I can only offer encouragement, since I'm on a mac. However, as a Finale user from the very first release (in what feels like the stone age) and have upgraded fairly consistently over the years. I have always praised Finale with each release for the kind of intuitive improvements they made--little things, that saved time and worked better than before. Then I left a gap over a year ago when i installed 2012. I couldn't find anything I was used to. A lot of things were better than before, but many--like changing the names of tools and putting them in a different menu--made me crazy, And there were other problems that even the Finale help site and other forums were of no use. I'm afraid to install 2014 for fear that the things I'm currently working on will be delayed by more changes. This forum has resulted in many, many hints and help, but there are still some elements that remain a mystery. In any case, I wish you well with your new computer and the new Finale Windows version. And I hope there are a lot of Windows users here to guide you through the thicket of changes! I started using Finale at version 2.2, back in 1994, and tracked its improvements as far as Finale 2000c. With work-rounds that did a good job for me I produced a great deal of music, much of it for the adult learners' orchestra that I started in 1995. After a major computer crash in November I'm expecting to have a new computer and Finale 2014 for Windows very soon. I've had a chance to trial-and-error it a bit already, but not managed to find various things that I used a lot in the earlier version. I'm hoping someone can help me to find them, even if just by telling me what to search on in the on-line help. 1. How can I increase the number of most recently closed items listed at the bottom of the File menu (default seems to be 4)? 2. How can I change the default font for e.g. the number above a multi-measure rest? I found a specific item for the default music font, but not the extensive list(s) I expected for all sorts of other elements. 3. I haven't found a way to respace a number of bars if e.g. I want to enlarge a multi-measure rest and then space the remaining bars in the line equally. I'm puzzled that it doesn't seem to be a possibility related to the menu that appears when I right click on one of the measure spacing handles. I'm sure I must be missing something. Hopefully... [Finale] Using two versions at once.
Anyone else run into this? I have two versions of Finale on my computer. (Mac) 2012 and 2014. I have two clients, one using 2012 and the other 2014. Opening 2012 in 2014 should not be a problem, but is it possible to launch 2012 and open the first client's files in that version so that if I have to send it back with alterations or suggestions, it will stay in that version and not automatically open or save in 2014? Re: [Finale] Score Manager: a sound for expressions?
Maybe can I hear a specific sound for a symbol like forte, crescendo, and so on? Why should I want it? I want it because I make a lot of rehearsal tracks (usually for singers). It saves time in the studio when they can hear what they will be up against with the live players. It doesn't hve to be perfect, but if the dynamics are too weird, it's not very useful. [Finale] Finale to MIDI to ProTools?
For decades I have gone into my favorite recording studio with MIDI files made from Finale--usually orchestra scores. When the MIDI files have been imported into ProTools, they come through with tempos intact, the order of the instruments intact, and even the instrument names. I'm now working in a newer version of Finale (mac 2012) and the MIDI files are a mess. The instrument order is scrambled, and none of them carry the instrument names... which we use to cue in overdubs, crossfade, fixes, etc. I am simply converting the Finale file to standard MIDI as I have always done, but for some reason they come through completely garbled. The tempos seem OK, so we can use it as a tempo map, but the rest is a mess. Usually we can see the instruments and groups coming up on the screen during playback. Are any of you familiar with this process? Also, when I convert the MIDI file BACK to Finale, I get the same thing. Instrument sounds are mis-applied and the score order is totally screwed. I'm hoping there's an expert out there who can help... in any case, HELP! Linda Worsley ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Re: [Finale] Fin Mac 2012 Text blocks
Neal, the redraw screen is not do anything either. I have restarted Finale, restarted the computer, Everything. Maybe using the expressions tool IS the best way for this, since text block seems to be disabled. Trouble is, it's only disabled part of the time. Using the measure attached text blocks is WAY easier, since it's just point and type right where you want them, and no fussing around with open the tool, type the text, two separate clicks to say OK, and then select, and then move it around. And typing the text into those tiny little boxes makes it difficult for me since my vision is not that great these days. It's NOt the way I want to do it, and the old method is theoretically available to use (the text tool is there, the pull down says I can attach to measure, and none of it works.) Also I really don't think the screen is redrawing.None of the commands for redraw screen (including doing it from the tool bar) do anything at all. In the past, when the redraw screen happened, you could actually see the screen redraw. I'm using latest mac Air and Mountain Lion OS (10.8.1). Recently upgraded from my macPro (10.4) and Finale 2010. New Finale seems fine in spite of renaming and repositioning some of the tools and procedures. And then, in a different place, or after I've quit and reopened later, it lets me do it. For awhile. And then won't. Is this a bug? Or have I inadvertently checked something that makes this happen? Well, first of all, I don't remember asking getting an answer before, but I believe you, so I apologize if I asked it in duplicate. Of course I use the expression tool for all sorts of things, including many non-expression elements, and I love the fact that I can even create a key command for frequently used expressions or other text bits. BUT I have a client who insists on putting stage directions in the rehearsal score... sometimes quite lengthy... two or three long sentences (and many shorter ones.) I can only use the text blocks. John, I agree with you on several levels. I don't do a lot of writing for solo piano, and when I do, I usually use the make it clear school of notation. And I hate clutter. [Finale] rests in layers
Don't know if this has ever been discussed. I have a client who uses a lot of layers in his piano notation. Very useful, of course (He is using Encore, and gives me pdfs of the Encore scores to enter into Finale.) Not hard, but When he puts the notation in layers, he tends to leave layers incomplete. For example, he might put a half note (in 4/4) in layer 2 of the left hand part, and leaver the rest of that layer blank. The top layer (usually Layer 1) Layer one typically uses all four beats, as it should. Meanwhile, layer 2 contains 2 beats.. s. I have always put rests in places where a layer stops short. Is this just compulsive/neurotic of me or is it actually required that we fill out the rest of the measure with rests? Is there an actual rule for this? A general practice that ignores the rule? [Finale] shifting notation! HELP
I opened a MIDI file in Finale (mac, 2010) and discovered that right in the middle of the pioece, all of the notation had shifted over a measure and a half. Not just one beat, not just one measure, but two eighth notes to the left in 6/8. I have NO idea how to shift them into the right position. The client who sent this also sent me a pdf, and I see that he inserted a 1/4 measure (as a pause... OY!!) just before the great shift. Is there any way I can simply tell the notation to shift two eighth notes to the right? It's a long piece, and I may have to ask the client to create a special MIDI file with just the second half, after the 1/4 measure. But since I'm faced with this problem, I wonder if any of you have run into a problem like this and know how to fix it. Gratefully, hopefully, Linda Worsley ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] octaves, broken, not rolled?
This is not really a Finale question as much as a notation question. After all these years, I should know this, but ... duh. I am correcting a Finale piano score for a client, and he has several places where he wants high octaves played in a bell-like manner by breaking them (as if the lower note is a grace note, but both notes held). He has the wiggly rolled chord mark, and it looks wrong to me. But maybe not. Is there some standard way to notate this without Mahler-like copious notes about bell sounds and the like. [Finale] Playback weirdness
I rarely use MIDI any more for anything, mostly just listen in my head to what I write down. I do check for wrong notes, usually by playing sections (in orchestral scores) or isolating lines to catch the errors. I'm currently using latest Macbook Pro with Finale 2010. Here's my problem: lately I've been working on finale scores that are not my own, and when I play them back (most are just piano parts with a few solo voices) and it's only playing back a a small part of the full notation. I know there are limitations on some MIDI instruments, but piano??? Is there a setting that has caused this? Where did I go wrong? Anyone out there with help will be very appreciated! Re: [Finale] opening a MIDI file in Finale.
As always the people on this list are incredibly generous with advice and assisatance. One thing I should have mentioned is that both the client and myself are on latest model Macs, windows solutions are not possible, alas. Mostly I am baffled that the client has given me so many files t hat have opened without a whimper. All Encore files ere created with the same (ugh.. but that's another story) Encore software, saved as a standard MIDI file, and all but this one opened without a whimper. I think my only solution is to enter the thing myself, which I don't mind, but for some reason the client resists. He wants the tempo and dynamic data (which is irrelevant, since th Finale files are for print and then performance by humans) but for some reason he feels is important. It may, however, be the only reasonable solution, given that I have already spent far too much time trying to browbeat his original MIDI file, and the one he re-did, into submission. Several people have offered to work on it themselves. That's amazing, but I think I'll just notate from hard copy. Many, many thanks! [Finale] opening a MIDI file in Finale.
Help! I have been receiving MIDI files from a client--created originally in Encore, and saved as a standard MIDI file. I have managed to open fifteen of them in Finale and create Finale scores using the MIDI information, comparing it to a PDF of the Encore printout for accuracy. Encore is, of course, a horror show, but most of the time I can make these work. The 16th file, created in the same way, refuses to open and gives me an error message that says Finale cannot open this filetype. I downloaded it the same way I did the others. Like the others, it has .mid at the end of the file name, and he PDF of that file is perfect. I've tried opening it by double clicking, by opening it within the program and every other way I can think of. I even tried importing it in xml, but nothing works. It imported a blank score. The client reconstituted the MIDI file from the original Encore file, as he had the others, and they were just fine, opened like a charm. This one... well, does anyone have any advice? (Just make a new score from the pdf? he insists that there will be too many errors in translation. But that may be my last resort. Thanks for any words of wisdom. Re: [Finale] courtesy accidentals
Thanks to everyone for the help on courtesy accidentals. They all work, but take about four times as long as I remember. I seem to remember a set of accidentals, both with and without parentheses in either the articulation tool or the expression tool, where I could just select and position the courtesy accidental. Was I dreaming? Also I use simply entry, though I use speedy for some special tasks like creating or separating beans. I have always used simple and I know that arguments rage about which is better, but simple is better for me and with an outboard numeric pad on the left and a mouse in my right hand I can go like the wind. But this may be one case where I use speedy for a specific task. Still, I'm wondering what happened to those graphics (I think) I used to use. Does anyone remember those? Did they disappear in later versions of Finale. By the way, the reason I am begging for help here is that my 2010 documentation seems to have disappeared when I changed computers and cloned everything to this one. Re: [Finale] courtesy accidentals
It's my experience that when I give a new piece to the players either for live performance or recording, that leaving out courtesy accidentals *does* waste time. I have always erred on the side of using them, especially when cancelling a previous accidental that might prove confusing. I made this a rule after having to stop and clarify, especially in the studio where *I* was paying the tab. Some bits of notation clutter, but I think courtesy accidntals do not. I don't use parentheses except in cases where it seems clearer than a naked accidental. By the way, I just created a whole library and put it in the articulation tool. Six different characters (w and w/o parentheses.) I also created a key command for them. (I love this particular feature!) But I don't remember having to create this library before, and I have used Finale since the very first version in the 80s. But maybe I am getting dotty after all these years...
