Hi All:
I recieve so many e mails from the address listed above. I have met
quite a few of you. However, I would love to know a little background
of each and all of you. Are you a musician? Are you active? Are you
retired? Where are you from and where are you residing now? What kind
of music do you specialize in? Are you an instrumentalist,
composer/arranger/copiest, teacher, etc.? If not a musician, what is
your occupation?

The answered questions are to satisfy my curiosity about who I am
dealing with. I have seen all of your names many times. Now it is
time for more information.

Thanks;

I was born in 1934, in Dartmouth, Devon, England, and got into ensemble
music by playing horn and cornet in the local brass band from 1947 to
1952. I took a degree in engineering at Cambridge, England, in 1956, and
worked in various sorts of engineering, aerodynamics and computing until
1994, mostly for UK Government, but including three interesting years in
the Netherlands with the European Space Research Organisation (now
subsumed into ESA). In 1994, I retired and went to my local university
(Reading, England) to study music. From 1998 until 2003 I continued
studying composition at Reading, and am now preparing a Sinfonietta for
wind band that I wrote during this period for a trial play-through in
April. Nowadays I play mostly horn, double bass and piano, none to
professional standard, but have occasionally been paid to conduct. My
wife runs an orchestra for adults who are just starting instrumental
playing or wish to return to it after a lay-off; my elder daughter is a
singer-songwriter who accompanies herself on bass guitar; and my son
plays (also mostly bass guitar) in jazz bands and pit orchestras, but
earns more in software and business management.

2005-01-03 Thread Rodney Waterman
Here's my two bob's worth:
Born in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, Dec 8th 1956 during the closing
ceremony of the Melbourne Olympic Games, preventing my mother from
attending. A shady lurker who has learnt a lot from the great contributors
to this wonderful Finale list. Fell in love with Music when I slumped to
the ground in tears and wonder (~1964) at hearing 'The First Nowell' sung
in part harmony over the Flora Hill Primary School PA as I headed for home.
Took up rock guitar when I was 13 and classical at 15. Discovered Bach and
Mozart [fell apart when I first heard the slow movement of the violin &
viola concerto] at 16 and started playing Dowland on the Lute at 17.
Sung/played Morley, Gibbons, Byrd, Bach and Bruckner in Bendigo High School
choir.

Studied guitar, lute and recorder at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in
the heady days of the international Early Music Revival. Loved Frans
Bruggen's recordings and took up recorder as main instrument. Focused on
Renaisssance, Baroque & Contemporary (Berio, Ishii etc.) repertoire but
extended to improvised/jazz in 1990s. Had fortunate break when my local
independent Brazilian/Jazz CD was signed up by Egberto Gismonti's Carmo
label and released by ECM Records in 2000 -
http://www.ecm-records.com/Background/Carmo/Bgr_C14.php

Have used Finale since 1998 (now FinWin2005a), mainly for eclectic school
arrangements - I have taught in Primary and Secondary schools - and my own
compositions. Recently I have become involved in sound recording and use a
Yamaha AW4416 combined with my PC to produce my own recordings.

Oh, I am a great fan of the Beatles and play all the wonderful acoustic
guitar standouts - Blackbird, Mother Nature's Son, Something, Here Come's
the Sun etc. Recently I have discovered the beauty and complexity of Brian
Wilson's music and attended the SMILE concert in Melbourne on Dec 8th 2004
- I even bought a T-Shirt!!! [Didn't Leonard Bernstein feature a clip
Wilson singing/playing his brilliant *Surfs Up* on Bernstein's US Music TV
program in 1967?]. I'm all ears! Teach me something new!

Happy New Year [Belatedly] to all.

[Finale] OT: Who Are You?

2005-01-04 Thread Gerry Kirk
These 50 small bio’s have be such a pleasure to read! Here is mine:

An amateur composer, arranger, and Finale user, I have resided in San Diego the past 58 years. I studied trumpet with Don Phillips at the old Thearle’s building. My high school band director, Bill Padelford, was my music mentor, and after graduating with a BA in music from SDSU, I replaced him as he eventually became the Superintendent of a HS District.

Ozzie Wissel helped me join ASCAP and publish 3 marches when my band performed for the first of 4 times at the Tournament of Roses Parade. I taught instrumental music for 15 years (marching & concert bands, jazz band, orchestra, theory, and even bagpipe band), before Proposition 13 was used as an excuse to remove music from the school day in my district. I also enjoyed adjudicating parade, field show, concert, solo & ensemble festivals, and guest conducting throughout Southern California (Wildwood Music Camp, San Diego Elementary Honor Band, etc.)

I left music for the private sector for 3 years, then returned to HS, teaching English and AVID for the past 20 years. And I just accepted early retirement.

For the past 14 years I have conducted (up to) a dozen trombonists in an ensemble named Boneafied Brass, who enjoy performing mostly for charity gigs throughout San Diego.

I have used FINALE sporadically since 2.0 on various MAC’s (currently a G4). I wrote my first symphony on 3.2. And for retirement, my wife got me a new Kurzweil 2661 and M BOX, whose possibilities I look forward to learning (help!). I am arranging some Baroque music that my very talented cousin in Montreal, Dr. Douglas Kirk, sends me for trombone choirs. And a friend in the Washington, DC area has been sending me some great jazz charts to re-score for a very talented big band leader, George Hipp.

I must second what I sense from many other posts: my greatest joy after my marriage, family and cat is the camaraderie and friendships with which my fellow-music makers bless me.

As a hobby I write and arrange music that I perform at science fiction

Hi, Bob -- I've long admired your bands and arrangements. That's one of the
fun things about this list -- being able to rub shoulders with some
"names." I've been pleasantly surprised at how many people cheerfully &
often share their help, names & no-names (like me) alike.

b. 1/23/57 My day job is running a liquor store for the commonwealth of
Virginia (a control state, if that means anything to anybody in a
non-control state!). I play trumpet in a big swing band (I'm dying for us
to do some modern tunes from the 50s, but it ain't gonna happen!); just
quit a r&b band, and occasionally play in concert bands, brass quintets. I
was also self-taught on trumpet, and have been studying privately for about
8 years with Rolla Durham (Richmond Symphony principal tpt) to correct 30
years of bad habits -- Rolla has the patience of Job.

One of my projects is to rehearse and market a 4-horn section. I'm
self-taught in theory -- I started learning chords and voicings by studying
the Chicago sketch scores. Most of my work in Finale is arranging for the
horn section. I've also done a fair number of jazz trumpet solo
transcriptions (Lee Morgan & Freddie Hubbard are two of my favorites), as
well as transcribing jazz tunes -- I've recently worked out several songs
from the One for All sextet -- I'm pleased to be able to get the chords as
well as the lines. I think chords are an essential element for solo
transcriptions, and am working to improve my ability to transcribe 'em. I'm
lucky to be able to pick up occasional jobs through the internet doing horn
arrangements for other bands - I'm surprised there are few commercial
sources (such as Hal Leonard, or Second Floor Music) for horn arrangements.

I enjoy transcribing and arranging quite a bit -- it's like working out the
NY Times Sunday crossword puzzle:always a challenge, and always satisfying.

Lastly (and maybe most importantly) I make a great steak & a mean margarita.
Thanks for asking, Bob -- Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, & Season's
Greetings to all! Praise Mithra & pass the eggnog.

Although I'm rather new and not a regular contributor, I'll add to the

transcriptions of 16th-century polyphony or to generate parts for my early

I'm loudmouth enough that I probably don't have to write much. I'm a
composer who earns about a third of my income from my compositions, all in
nonpop (http://maltedmedia.com/people/bathory/). I used to be a performer
(weak on clarinet and viols, good on fipples & capped reeds, and a pretty
good countertenor), but I gave that up to concentrate on composing and more
composer advocacy. I still conduct when called upon, and can play the ol'
recorders as needed.

I've had the small publishing company Westleaf Edition
(http://westleaf.org/) since 1970 (using Finale since 1992), publishing the
works of three composers (David Gunn, Gilles Yves Bonneau, and me). I'm
also a for-hire copyist, and do work for Frog Peak Music as well as
individual composers and arrangers.

Having gone to Rutgers nearly four decades ago, I was basically prepared
for nothing, so variously over the years I've been a truck driver,
librarian, electronics repairman, graphics designer, sales clerk, tech
writer, day laborer, press operator, computer programmer, videographer,
contributing editor, secretary, digital designer, retail technology
consultant, book editor, photographer, proofreader, schoolteacher, country
store marketer, recording engineer... wha'ever
(http://maltedmedia.com/people/bathory/bathres.html).

I live in Vermont with my lovely wife Stevie, three horses, two cats, three
gardens, and an occasionally rambunctious brook, and next to composition,
my best work the past 10 years has been composer advocacy via the radio
show Kalvos & Damian's New Music Bazaar (http://kalvos.org/), which won the
2000 ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award.

The temperature was -17F/-27C Monday night.

Title: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

Hi Bob--

I'll bite, and avoid using the quote from "The Jerk" (extra credit to those
who know what I'm talking about).

Born 12/31/74 (to get that last-minute tax deduction for my dad) on a farm
halfway between Columbus and Cleveland OH. I work for Coda to pay the bills, was
hired sight unseen for a tech support job in 1998 (and boy are *they* sorry
) shortly after graduating from Ashland University
(in Ohio) the same year with a BME. I now work in the software
development area (but I'm not going to say what part)

Outside of bill paying, I'm a singer and conductor, primarily in the
classical genre, having sung with Dale Warland Singers, Kantorei, and as a
soloist various and sundry places, and conducted a few church choirs as
well as helped found DeCantus (www.decantus.com).

I began my Finale journey in v3.2 in my college's computer lab as the
lab manager. I have one primary client in the Twin Cities metro area for whom
I've done everything from beginning level Piano duets to full orchestra/choral
arrangements. I do a bit of arranging myself, but none of it good enough to do
anything with.

I'm married, with 2 dogs, to a girl I met in high school. Other than that,
my life is pretty boring...

Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

2004-12-27 Thread Mariposa Symphony Orchestra

Hi, Bob --

Just got home after being away for a few
days; I was a professional actor for 25 years (NY, London stage and film/TV)
before becoming disabled in 1999 via an onstage accident in D.C. (links
below - but why bother?)  Relatively minor disability, but enough to cease
my acting career.   Wife, young son and I retired back to native
California in 2001 (high in the Sierra at 4,000 feet above the town of Mariposa
and just outside Yosemite) where I've been able to return to my first great love
and compulsion: the symphonic repertoire.  Two years ago I formed the
(community) Mariposa Symphony Orchestra and have been having the absolute time
of my life.  Every concert sells out, there's wonderful support from the
community and it's a rollicking happy, dedicated and learning, rapidly improving
group, now about 50 members.

I was intensively trained in my youth and
teens as an instrumental musician as well as in composition
and conducting.  No matter how wonderful a career and time I had as an
actor, there was always a little voice nagging me from the back of my head:
'wouldn't you have been happier as a composer and conductor?'   I
can't tell you how great it's been to finally shut that damned little voice up
with a resounding YES!!!   I never stopped composing during all those
years as an actor but now have returned to it with a vengeance and
have enjoyed a few locally-designed premieres in the past 24 months with my
orchestra.

This was a wonderful idea of yours, Bob - I
too have wondered about our co-Listers; if anyone gets to the Yosemite area,
look me up.  If I haven't already scared you off...

Oh yeah -- born February 26, 1957.   Married college sweetheart January 20,
1985.  Son (Maxfield Charles Marsden) born April 11, 1997.

Now can I go?

Best,

Well, your websites ARE exceptional, so there is no surprise there.
There are so many slick, polished sites out there reeking of spin and

Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

2004-12-28 Thread Christopher Smith
OK, so many interesting stories so far, I have to add mine in. Plus I
have some free time...

Born in Toronto 1960, moved all over ending up in Montreal. Went to
McGill University in classical bass trombone performance, but never
intended to play full time in an orchestra. My plan from the beginning
was play, write, teach; any style, basically try to be as polyvalent as
possible. My first gigs were on bass (electric, then upright, learned
from my brother, who is a bassist, and my sister, who plays bass now
for Prince) but I gave that up once I was out of school. I wrote,
played and conducted for shows, choirs, and casuals in Montreal,
gaining valuable chops and experience. I finished my Master's degree in
Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media (writing major) at Eastman School
of Music in 1988 and won a few awards for writing music. I came back to
Montreal to be with my sweetie, eschewing the big centres like New York
and Los Angeles, preferring to be a relatively big fish in a small
pond, and taught jazz arranging for the next 17 years at McGill, and
trombone and theory privately. I kept gigging at anything that came my
way, more or less keeping up the "play, write, teach" philosophy, but
my first love was jazz. I left McGill last year, and now teach jazz
composition and arranging at Vanier College and Université de Montréal.
I still gig quite a bit on tenor trombone, bass trombone and tuba,
playing regularly with the Altsys Jazz Orchestra, Streetnix, Montreal
Jazz Big Band, the Opus Lib brass quintet, and l'Orchestre Symphonique
de Sherbrooke. I write a lot too, for jingles, films, shows, and
whatever jazz I can manage to fit into all that, though the teaching
side seems to be on a relative upswing. I married my sweetie, who
teaches college, and we have two children, 11 and 9. I'm pretty sure
that if I had tried this in a bigger city I would have failed
miserably, or else found myself pigeonholed into a specialty, which did
not follow my original plan.

I have used Finale since 3.2 to create pretty parts for the musicians,
but I never managed to get my head around working directly to the
computer. I still use cheap staff paper and a 2B pencil to sketch,
working everything out before I ever get to the computer. For my
commercial work, I can often do it without referring to a piano, but I
noodle endlessly on the piano whenever I am creating something that is
new to me.

Yes! Minister of Music (organist, choir director -- singers and
handbells) for a program size Episcopal parish; keyboard player with a
band specializing in 30's-50's repertory), violinist with Ars Nova
Trio (baroque literature), conductor of the Northern Neck Orchestra
(Kilmarnock VA).

Are you retired?
Not yet!
Where are you from and where are you residing now?
Native of West Virginia now living in southeastern Virginia
What kind of music do you specialize in?
Quite eclectic -- everything from Gregorian chant to newly composed
art music; band, orchestra, choral. In my youth I worked in NYC for
several years as a pianist for all the major dance companies and
teachers. Also held positions with San Francisco Ballet, Oakland
Symphony. I am a chamber musician having played most of the
literature for piano and other instruments. I have good chops. I
conduct a fair amount of American musical theatre on a freelance
basis. I don't do rap.

Are you an instrumentalist, composer/arranger/copiest, teacher, etc.?
All of the above. I studied piano with David Bradshaw (NYC),
conducting with Lazlo Varga (orchestral), Byron McGilvray (choral),
Ed. Kruth
Boy, was Ed Kruth something else! Great wind wind ensembles. And when
he adjudicated a band at a festival, if the director wasn't up to
snuff, the result was termed as "Being Kruthified." Great memories.

Dean

(wind band), composition with Roger Nixon, organ with Alex Post, voice
with Catherine Harvey (all at San Francisco State University from
which I was graduated in 1984, magna cum laude). I served two terms
as Dean of the Tidewater Chapter of The American Guild of Organists.

Are you a musician?

Yes. I played clarinet all through school 6th-12th grade in Starkville,
Mississppi and undergraduate college for four years at Mississippi State
University. I continued to play clarinet in graduate school (on the side) at
Univ. of Tennessee Memphis where several professors played as well. At various
times while I was there including Christmastime, we would work up several
selections for a wind ensembale.

I officially took 2 1/2 years of piano lessons during my undergraduate years
but have been fooling around with the piano/synth since 5th/6th grade. I
continue to play piano (teaching myself, playing along with other music)
especially at church where I play piano and my synthesizer--at times primarily,
and others secondarily.

I started messing around with the acoustic guitar in my undergraduate years and
later, but after the mid-90s, everyone got tired of me "borrowing" their guitar
and told me to get my own.. And so I did in '97 and have taught myself
everything (what little that is *grin*) on my own. And it looks like I will be
delving into the electric guitar realm here very shortly.. maybe even this
week.
I play the guitar mainly at church and with friends and along with CDs. I would
really like to make time to take some lessons. But life gets in the way.

I have been playing the penny whistle for the last 2-3 years as well at church
and other places (such a selection of instruments for a Baptist church).

Are you active?

Yes.

Are you retired?

No. My work is non-music related (I am an engineer), other than having a music
CD playing nearly all the time at my desk.

Where are you from and where are you residing now?

I am from Starkville, Mississippi although I was born in Alabama, but now
reside in Memphis, Tennessee.

What kind of music do you specialize in?

Gospel/hymns/contemporary Christian. Clarinet-wise...whatever was or is thrown
to me--I especially like Mozart, Beethoven, and Crussell.

Are you an instrumentalist,

See above.

composer/arranger/copiest, teacher, etc.?

I have been composing music since the 8th grade (started with writing clarinet
ensembles). In high school (before the days of Finale or anything computerized
('86-'89) I helped arrange and copy music for concert band. One big project I
undertook is that I copied/created full concert band orchestration from copies
of copies of copies of individual parts and 2 differing (neither complete)
scores... of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.. by pencil, then by pen and ink and
ruler. That was fun :) It paid my way for our senior year concert trip that
year. Boy, Finale woulda been nice back then.

If not a musician, what is your occupation?

Engineer.

Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

2004-12-29 Thread laloba2
Born in 1964 in Germany to an American mother and a British/American
father. Moved to the states shortly thereafter where I was raised in
Denver Colorado. Studied classical flute as a child and had my first
experience with writing jazz in junior high school when there were no
flute parts for the jazz band so I had to write my own. Bless my
band director for letting me hang around anyway!

I was never a very good sight reader growing up due to my dyslexia.
When the notes started going by too quickly, I would have to wing it
because I just couldn't see them. This was always a great
embarrassment to me but I guess it was a good thing in a way because
it helped me to develop my ears. Despite my reading difficulties, my
teacher still supported and encouraged me musically thank goodness.
So bless my classical flute teacher for never berating me and instead
sending me to jazz school where I felt like I was finally home
musically.

Graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Jazz
Composition. I was fortunate enough to get to study with Herb
Pomeroy, Greg Hopkins, Bob Freedman, Ken Pullig, Wayne Naus, Dennis
Grillo and Richard Lowell. I started copying charts for Bob Freedman
to make extra money while in school and of course spent many hours
copying my own charts, pen and ink, on a blue footlocker in a tiny
apartment in Boston. Bless all of my friends that stopped by to keep
me company and bring coffee. I met so many great people while at
school!

I then lived in Phoenix for several years where I was a professional
jazz flautist in various duos, trios, quartets etc. and also an R&B
band. We did a mix of original music and standards and played at
clubs, casual gigs and jazz and art festivals. I worked with and
studied with a wonderful person and jazz guitar player named Bud
Dimock during that time too. That was always great fun! The
highlight of my time in Phoenix was getting to play with Ray Charles
and his band during one of his concerts in Phoenix. I will never
forget that! Bless my booking agent for hiring me for that one!

I currently live in Los Angeles and make my living as a full time
musician. Most of my income comes from being a proofreader, copyist,
midi transcriptionist and music librarian for feature films and
television. But I also compose, arrange, orchestrate and play from
time to time as well. I do a bit of computer consulting for a hand
full of musicians here in town too. Not only are these people wildly
talented musicians, they are also wonderful, kind, warm and decent
human beings. Bless them (and their wives who are equally wonderful)
for adding so much to my life in the past couple of years. They have
reminded me of how much sheer joy can be found in creating and
playing music just for the sake of the music itself. A couple of
them are listers here so I'll take this chance to say thank you!

For recreation, I love to read, water and snow ski, and spend as much
time as possible just hanging out and talking with friends. The
older I get the more I realize that simple pleasures really are the
best.

Thanks Bob for starting this thread. And thanks to all of you who
have posted. I have enjoyed reading your stories very much!

-Karen
P.S. to John Howell...my mother hails from Radford. I can remember
going to Blacksburg many times as a child with my mother and
grandmother.

P.S.S. Christopher, thank you for also writing in your post about
how you actually create your music i.e. still with paper and pencil
at the piano in the beginning and then to the computer. I'm with you
on that!! I can't write directly to the computer either though I
know there are those who can and do with much success. I too usually
start at the piano and then move to the computer to orchestrate.
Maybe this is another idea for an OT conversation. I'm always
curious as to others' methods of writing and how they go about the
process.

You're right, that everyone probably works differently. For close to
12 years a very talented arranger named Paul Breske and I split the
arranging for The New Virginians. Paul conceived the entire
arrangement as a whole, which made for fairly simple (Broadway style)
choral voicings, and treated the 6 horns like a small big band.

Not me! I always worked out the vocal arrangements (and basic chord
flow) first, at the piano, exploring possibilities and narrowing them
down. Made for some richer and more flexible voicings. (It was a
good contrast and the group benefitted from having two different
approaches.) Then I mostly wrote the showband charts at my desk,
except for checking some voicings at the keyboard. Probably comes
from 20 years of writing (vocal) quartet charts and thinking of the
band lines as sweetening, since we had to have charts that worked for
everything from piano trio to the Tonight Show band.

I started working directly into the computer about 14 years ago, when
our department started furnishing us with good Macs (Professional
Composer--yechhh!; Mosaic--a great improvement), and do it now even
for large-scale charts. The stack of ms. paper in my cabinet will
probably never get used up! Works great for CD transcriptions, where
you concentrate on one thing at a time.

Very nice to put some biographies to all those names!
Here is some of mine:
Born in 1970 in Berlin, I studied music at King's College, Cambridge
(UK), and baroque and classical violin with Simon Standage. I then
worked as a freelance violinist in London for a while, played with the
Academy of Ancient Music and Collegium Musicum 90. I then decided I
wanted to do more studying and went to the Schola Cantorum in Basle for
a few years. Although my lessons with the violin teacher there (no need
to mention names) ended rather abruptly after a disagreement, I was able
to study with the Cellist Christophe Coin. I work mostly as a freelance
violinist, and have played for the Bach Ensemble New York, and many
lesser known German groups. For several years I have been a regular
member with Cappella Coloniensis, the oldest Period Instruments
Orchestra (I think) in the world, we just celebrated our 50th. (I am
actually writing this from a hotel room in Dortmund, where we'll play a
New Year's eve concert tomorrow. Our live recording of the original
version of Wagner's Flying Dutchman is due to come out in the next few
weeks - that's as far as our repertoire extends).
I also have my own Ensemble, Camerata Berolinensis, and lead and direct
a few others. Since this year I also play as a principal for a Canadian
group called Aradia Ensemble.
A few years ago I founded my own CD label, two CDs of Camerata
Berolinensis have since come out. I do engraving on the side (a good way
to kill time in hotels or trains), and hopefully will eventually start
as a publisher on a small scale.
I also still do some musicological research for Chris Hogwood.
The latest news is that I am hopefully going to do some serious string
quartet playing, although we are still very much at the beginning. When
we get there, I'll make sure to let the list know about it...

What a pleasure it is to read about the background of so many people on
the list. It gives it a more human touch (not that it is not human, but
discussions on the web tend to look impersonal to my taste).

b. Nov. 24 1967 in Toronto, Canada, from french speaking parents who
were there to perfect their skills in english. I grew up in Quebec city
and started music with electric guitar, playing lead guitar in heavy
metal bands in my late teen years (until I reached 19). I soon got
interest in classical guitar and left electric guitar completely to
focus on my studies. I got my diploma from Laval University and my
Master from the Quebec conservatory of music, both in guitar
performance. After my studies, I have followed my wife who went to
Germany for two years to study with a well-known string player in
Hannover. As I had plenty of time there, I started to learn Finale 97
for PC to arrange and publish some arrangements I made there. When I
got back here in Canada, I started do get more serious about music
typesetting and have never stopped doing it. I have switched to the
Macintosh platform since Finale 2001. I did have a full-time job a was
engraving as much as I could in my free time. Fortunaly for me, I am
now working full time as music engraver since last fall. For years I
was hoping to get everything in place to make it possible and now it
happens. Although I do not participate very often to the discussions on
the Finale list, I do follow with great interest most of the threads.

You may have heard of my brother and sister-in-law, Norm and Darlene Daley
who do a lot of work for the Junior Theatre.

Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

2005-01-04 Thread Bernard Savoie
I've really enjoyed learning about the people I've been reading during
the several years I've been mostly lurking on the list. Here's a
little something about 'moi' :

Name: Bernard Savoie
born: 12/16/1955, Montreal, Canada
I'm a sax player, composer, arranger, copyist, publisher and conductor
in the Montreal region. Studied at UQAM (Université du Québec à
Montreal) and McGill University. Been a Finale user since version 1
(remember the good old days where articulations and slurs had to be
adjusted manually [and re-adjusted for transposing instruments parts
after extraction] ). Most of the copy work I do are for local
contemporary music composers, with a lot of graphic and/or aleatoric
music and have been used with major symphony orchestras around the
world (just finished an oratorio which will be performed by the Paris
Symphony and am presently working on an opera which is going to
Sudbury, ON and a sax quartet concerto which is going to Winnipeg).

My greatest challenge/accomplishment on Finale was being lead copyist
for "Symphonie du Millénaire" (performed June 3, 2000 on the grounds of
Oratoire St. Joseph in Montreal), a cooperative work with 19 composers
writing for 16 ensembles, over 300 musicians including the Montreal
Symphony Orchestra, several contemporary music groups, a military band,
a boy's choir and 1200 bell ringers in a 90 minute, one-movement piece.
Final tally, over 4500 pages of music printed for individual parts as
well as scores for each ensemble and a mega-score (reduction to 1-4
staves per group of all the ensembles).

Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

2005-01-28 Thread David McKay
Bob, thanks for starting this thread. Sorry,I read
this thread so late.

Like many others have said, I have played some of your
arrangements in a school band, though I'm pleased to
say that 5 years ago I escaped crowd control [which
some people call high school music teaching] and have
been teaching piano and musicianship [music theory],
in a regional conservatorium, which I find much more
congenial.

I began with Finale 3, I think, which cost $475 AUD
[academic price]. I use it mainly these days to write
arrangements of popular songs for piano students and
to do transpositions for church musicians, and to
notate the occasional song, usually a new tune to an
old hymn.

[jazz-westcoast] Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?

2004-12-26 Thread Joel Sears
Hi Bob,
I would have thought that the copyist of BeBop Charlie and Party
Hearty could have retired from those assignments. Maybe they would have
had to do Nobody's Human, also, to retire. ;)

I went to North Texas State University through the mid 60s. I'm a
recording engineer, copyist and big band bari player, in Chicago. I
retired my Osmiroids and Esterbrooks in 1998 for Finale and never
looked back.

Thanks for asking,
Joel Sears

The answered questions are to satisfy my curiosity about who I am
