MWFHC Winter Meeting/Clinic
This message is from: Dave and Patti Walter dwal...@tm.net I also wanted to add to Joni Griffin's GREAT write up, a HUGE thank you to ALL Those that were part of putting on this meeting/clinic. I believe Joni mentioned everyone. Joni and Wanda Hase were the committee heads, but we sure had a lot of great members step up to the plate to help with the clinic. I hope we didn't miss anyone's name, it is not on purpose if we did, it was a group effort!! All were volunteers, all gave up their time , shared their knowledge and talent and I hope they all know it was much appreciated. I also want to thank ALL the club members for coming and supporting their club. As a board member we are often asked just what we do for the club members. Well. I think part of what we try to do is educate our members. These winter clinics are a great resource for many old and new members. I'm sure some of our members, to them, the demos are old hats. They might not learn as much from them, as other, and this is mostly because we have so many TALENTED members, but we had a LOT of new faces this year and I know they all enjoyed it a lot. MWFHC has a lot of changes underway this year, with the Fjord Breed Show being moved to Cedar Rapids Iowa, that is a big change. We had been in one place for 25 yrs., and change is never easy. It is just so nice when members can keep supporting their club throughout all kinds of change. WRITE DOWN JULY 16,17,18 Cedar Rapids Iowa. The place to be in July!!! Again THANK YOU to all who helped with the Meeting/Clinic and all who came to support the club. Re: MWFHC Winter Meeting/Clinic!!! YEA!
This message is from: jadeb...@aol.com The Mid-Winter Meeting and classes were great! I got some really nifty ideas for making pony-desensitizing-things from Heike Lewandowski and she says we don't really have to hang around crime scenes to get that yellow tape...Home Depot is quicker and safer! Bob Long's talk and demo on packing with Fjords into the gorgeous back-country places available to us in the USA and Canada was really exciting. I don't know if Braveheart and I are ready to meet our first bear though! JanetMc Nally's Farming with Fjords was really interesting and the log skidding with Tyler proved that I'll need to practice hopping back and forth over logs in motion a LOT before BH (or Bogie) and I try hiring out to any logging operations. I was really impressed with the care and caring involved in a good theraputic riding program...the horses and the helpers have to be pretty special individuals! Anyhow, as you've probably guessed, it was a wonderful weekend. After getting home and retrieving my ponies and dog from their various hotels, the first thing I did was to order a BUNCH of felting wool from HalcyonYarn. Once it all arrives, I will use what we learned on Friday night to begin felting my own herd of Fjords...it was really fun! I was sorry there wasn't enough time to try everything because the people who chose to try rosmaling seemed to be having a pretty good time too! And, as you've already heard, we got some hints about stylish haircuts from Joni and Jock so I'm eyeballing Bogie as a potential piano-key-haircut candidate. I think he'd look quite fetching! Stay warm everybody...spring has GOT to be showing up sometime soon! Kay Van Natta and Braveheart, who's heard about Cedar Rapids and can hardly wait and Bogie, who would rather focus on shedding Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

MWFHC Winter Meeting
This message is from: Dave and Patti Walter [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'll start the discussion on the MWFHC's Winter Meeting that was just in IL last weekend. First off, AS USUAL it was wonderful to see everyone. Wish more would have come but we ended up with around 45 GREAT Fjord Folks. I mean how could you not enjoy yourself when you are surrounded by Fjord Owners. The weekend consisted of a clinic with 3 speakers. An animal communicator, an animal chiropractor and an equine dentist. I'm rather a skeptic on animal communicator, not totally but...I've never had one of my animals read and never met an animal communicator in person, so maybe not a skeptic but just ever uneducated in that subject. I thought Asia was a really neat person, you could tell she knew what she was doing and was good at it. She spoke to us about what she does and why and a little how. It was very interesting and she was a very good speaker. In the afternoon she gave private sessions to those that wanted their animals read. Afterwards, everyone seems to have the same thought, how did she know some of those details?? and you kind of got the hairs on the back of you neck to stand up. It is amazing if nothing else. She is a neat lady. Next the animal chiropractor talked to us about adjustments and why chiropractic. She also was VERY good and knew her stuff, plus a good speaker. She then adjusted 2 Fjords in front of us. Last was the equine dentist, she also talked to the group and worked on a Fjord as well. She was just like the other 2, VERY good. I believe everyone was educated and everyone had a nice time learning. During all this, we had a tack swamp. Many members brought in items to sell and even though rather small, there was over $2000 sold. I , of course, helped with that number, as I bought a GREAT blanket liner. All my husband asked was did you sell more then you bought??? Actually this time I did!! I was impressed with myselt this weekend. Although I did have my eye on Bob G's harness but someone else bought it. She needs it more then I. After our clinic, we had a Wonderful dinner at the hotel, and then a band for our entertainment. We have some REALLY good dancers in our club too. Sunday morning brought our meeting and breakfast, again Wonderful food and I think a VERY productive meeting. It was rather long, but when you only meet twice a year, there is lots to cover. I would encourage everythign to watch for their newsletter that will be coming out in the near future. LOTS of great information in there, and if you have not paid your dues, PAY them! You don't want to miss out on future events. NEXT year's winter meeting is already in the planning and it's gonna be one you will WANT to attend! Lots of hands on, Lots for the youth of our club, a real family affair with something for EVERYONE. Ok, probably wrote enough, was a GREAT time, we have a GREAT CLUB! If i missed something I am sure someone else will fill it in. THANK YOU EVERYONE who helped put on this winter meeting and to everyone who came. Blue Earth - and MWFHC winter meeting - must come
This message is from: Pat Holland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you Laurie and Kay for responding to the question what is Blue Earth. As with Jen, from Texas, perhaps there are others that might find the below information interesting. In 1985 Two Fjord breeders, Mitch Perrizo and Roger Whitney exhibited their Fjords at the Fairbault County Fair in Blue Earth Minnesota, a very small town off I-90 known for it's agricultural background and connect with Senica Foods (Jolly Green Giant Brand), where there is a huge statue of the Green Giant. From just a few Fjords as exhibits - the Fjords. as usual brought more and more attention and by 1990 -1991- the Fairbault County Fairboard and the newly formed Midwest Fjord Horse Club joined forces and through hours and hours of working together, understanding, tweaking, sweat and down right care and pride - for not only the breed but our members as well - we have today the largest Fjord event in North America - every year. If I were to list all the people who made this happen - you all would still be sitting at your computers, reading that list - far into the new year. We are celebrating our 23rd year there, this year - and for the life of me, looking back, I am still in wonder and hold great respect for those who work this show, support this show and keep it alive and well. This is a good time to bring up our MWFHC Annual Winter Meeting, to be held February 23 24 at the Whal Equestrian Center near Sterling, Illinois. Dawn Schlickman has done a great job again putting this event together, and one of the opportunities you will all have is to be a part of what the MWFHC is doing for our members regarding the Blue Earth Show. I will be at your service, at a table, with all the information on the 2008 show, and be there to answer any questions you might have. PLEASE - all of you try to come. Oh by the way, Jen over the years members have come from every corner of the United States and Canada to attend the MWFHC Show. EVERY one is always very welcome. See you in February Pat Holland, MWFHC Show Chairman (at Blue Earth, MN) The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

Also in the afternoon Pat Holland will be addressing any questions you have about our annual horse show. Phil Odden will be answering questions about the evaluation process. It will be held at the Wahl Equestrian Center in Sterling, IL. We will be staying at the Holiday Inn in Rock Falls, IL. This year our meeting topics are varied. I really wanted to show some of the other aspects of the horse world, besides horse shows and evaluations. We will have Asia Voight, an animal communicator and Dr. Julie Smith, an equine Chiropractor. Also Dr. Lisa Nesson, DVM, will be doing a dental demo/talk. These people will give a talk and/or demo in the morning, after the lunch break they will be available to answer any questions you may have. If you would like to bring a current picture of your horse, Asia will be doing readings. Dr. Julie Smith will be doing equine chiropractic adjustments and Dr. Nesson will be available for any questions you may have about your horseâs health. Pat Holland and Phil Odden will also be available in the afternoon to answer any questions you may have about the horse show or the evaluation process. As a way to try and raise some money for the club, we will be having a tack/show clothing swap. You can bring your items and we will have tags for you to put your name and the dollar amount on. The idea is that people can look at the items for sale. If they are interested in an item, they will find you and work out a deal. We ask that whatever amount you sell the item for you give 10% to the club. Linda Syverson-Kerr has graciously volunteered to head up this part of the event. This sale will be one day only. All unsold items need to be taken back home with you. We will not be responsible for any items left behind. Saturday night the dinner will be at the hotel. A cash bar will be open at 6:00 pm, dinner will follow at 7:00pm. We will have the pleasure of listening and dancing to the band that played for us last year. Hopefully this year we will have more participation. We will have some very special center pieces at the tables again this year, make sure your sitting in the right chair.. Sunday morning we will have a brunch buffet and our club meeting. Keep your fingers crossed that we have better weather and everyone can come and participate. This is a great way to see your Fjord friends and to make new friends. Information packets will be mailed out at the end of December to all MWFHC members. The information will also be posted out on the club website at _www.mwfhc.org_ (http://www.mwfhc.org/) . MWFHC Winter Meeting
This message is from: Dave and Patti Walter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just thought I'd get the ball rolling on the discussion of the MWFHC's Winter Meeting. Although we did go, it was very short lived for myself, my hubby ,Eby Higdon and Joni Griffin. We picked Joni up in Milwaukee around 3PM. Hoping to get to the hotel by 5-5:30. Well hubby must have been listening to all the girl talk in the truck cause before we knew it were VERY close to Chicago and the airport. Which by the way, we should have been NO WHERE NEAR ! ugghgh, so taking the VERY scenic way around, we finally reached the hotel a little after 7:30PM. Most were finishing up with dinner. We ordered and it was very good and very reasonable. Then we crashed the Hotovy's party in their room and stayed up until 1AM. Was really fun as always to see everyone. Sat. morning I was quite worried about the upcoming storm and knew i could not get stuck in IL until Monday. So...we decided to leave Sat. morning and beat the storm and get home. Which we did and I have to say I'm very glad we did. We really got dumped on and i just hate to give someone else all that stress and worry. Of course the horses would all be fine, but it's just different when you have just your own horses on the farm, or someone elses too. Or it's just me and having to have control of things. :-) We only saw a little of the english saddle fitting. Got to see the fjords that came in, around 10 perhaps. And thru the grape vine I heard the auction did quite well bringing in $2700.00 That is great as the crowd this year wasn't as big. Maybe around 50 So...now all you who went, write in and tell us more! It's just always great to see other fjord owners, best group of horse owners out there!!! re: MWFHC winter meeting
This message is from: Philis B. Anderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks' Patti Jo for the brief update on the winter meeting. Mary Ofjord and I had planned to drive to Illinois, but watching the weather all week long, we decided against the trip. I missed missing people at the meeting, but for the weather reason and the fact that I've been dealing with my 30 year old Arab gelding, Buddy, who is having trouble getting up from a down position these days, I knew where I belonged. Buddy went down in our small barn last week. I know now why I raised four strapping six foot plus boys, now men! Two of my sons came over to the barn and literally dragged the poor old guy out the door on his side lying down. Good thing Buddy had a winter blanket on because they hooked onto that and the halter and pulled. As soon as Buddy's head was out the door, he whinnied and started eating hay!! (I thought he was a Fjord at that point!!!) We got him up and he toddled off, whinnying and thanking us. Yes, I know I should put him down, but he's still enjoying some life. That horse has always been a real gentleman for us and when he's really serious about where he plants himself, we'll make the decision. My daughter, Anne, is the show person in my familyI have been the go-fer and financier...but, with Miss Anne in vet school her days of showing are on hold. With a coming four year old fjord HASSE in the barn it is up to me to get him out and about. Scarrier for me than for him - haha!! Thanks to the club for hosting this eventthe facility is so wonderful, relaxing and it is just plain fun to hang out in the heated arena. Now, on to preparations for the Mn Horse Expo in late April. We will have a row of fjords for presentation. It is a highlight of my year and Miss Anne is going to sneak away to present Lena for the crowd. This message is from: Carol J. Makosky [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, I was wondering how long it would take to get the great news out about the really really nice time we all had at the winter meeting. It was such a fun time and the auction was the best. I think we all got caught up in the excitment of outbidding on both the silent items and the live part. I also hope everyone made it home without any mishap in the storm. I for one had an uneventful drive home except for about 30 miles of state road 93 they forgot to plow just south of Eau Claire. I hope I was the only one on that stretch, I just took my time and all was well. There was much to learn at the clinics and from the other members too. We are all excited about this year at Blue Earth and look forward to celebrating the 20th year there under the Green Giant. So thank you everyone who organized this and brought their horses for the clinic. Carol M. This message is from: Pat Holland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Apparently everyone is recuperating from the week end - so I'll step up and report a bit about our Midwest Fjord Horse Club Winter Meeting and Clinic in Winona, Mn this past week end. It was very well attended, a bit over 100 members came and it was great to see you all. Clinicians Wes Licht and John Gurtner gave demonstrations in driving, draft and riding at the new Minnesota Equestrian Center. Dan Nauman did an outstanding job organizing the Auction which brought in somewhere near $4,000. And Rich Hotovy was down right entertainer of the year as Auctioneer. One of the highlights was the bidding of Patti Walter's beautiful Fjord Afghan she made with over 500 hours worth of work. The bidding was supported by several remarkable members whom took it to a final bid of $850. It was a great demonstration of what our Midwest Club is all about, the support of one another in particular and the club in general. The Winter Meeting Chairman was Sophie Fiedler and with the help of Phil Odden and Linda Syverson-Kerr they provided a fine venue for us all to enjoy. Linda Syverson - Kerr should be duly noted for her non stop involvement of which we never saw her pause or take a breath. See you all in Blue Earth July 25-26-27th. Pat Holland
MWFHC WINTER MEETING
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This message is from Linda Syverson-Kerr, @ [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Group! Say, I wanted to give those of you attending the winter meeting and those that are thinking of attending, an update. If you HAVE NOT booked your room yet please do so, 50 were on hold under FJORD GROUP. There are only 6 left. The hotel is not more then 10-15 minutes from where the action is on Saturday and Sunday. There is a lunch stand at the arena that will be open to purchase lunch at, if you wish not to leave the grounds. I stopped by today and spoke with the owner, she indicated that they try to keep the temp at 60 degrees inside the arena. My friend, Lise, will be running the hippology stations at the arena (if you wish to test your knowledge). There will be 3/4 age groups. Winners will be announced and awarded a prize at the evening meal. This will be a fun, eventful and a great learning experience for all ages. I look forward to the silent auction, as I see in the news letter a lot on wonderful items donated. I look forward to the break from winter, and a weekend of FJORDS. I hope to see you there. Have a safe drive. Linda Syverson Kerr

MWFHC Winter Meeting, Feb 27-29
This message is from: Katherine Carter [EMAIL PROTECTED] If those of you in the MWFHC are looking for more program sponsors for the Blue Earth show, you might want to check with the Nordic World shop in Frost, MN, right next to Blue Earth. We stopped in the shop after the show last summer and the owner (Sondra, I think) said she would like to advertise in the program. Her shop had a great collection of hard-to-find books and other scandinavian items; I got a lovely Norwegian painting of a Fjord pulling a load of wood. You could contact her thru her webpage at www.nordicworld.com. -Kathy in ME

MWFHC WINTER MEETING/CLINIC
This message is from: Dave Walter [EMAIL PROTECTED] I wanted to write about the MWFHC winter's meeting/clinic that was held this last weekend in Galena IL. We just got home, got the horse settled in and everything else unpacked as well. I had to write and since I am going in for knee surgery tomorrow morning(have to be there at 4:30AM, surgery 7:30AM-why 3 hrs who knows?) I didn't want to put off writing this incase I could not get to the computer for a few days. The weekend was just wonderful. The weather was iffy, but for the most part the bad stuff was not bad or we got it at night. I think Gayle and Anne would disagree, they thought it was pretty cold and nasty. Heard they had asked to hold the meeting in Hawaii but the club was just too cheap!!! (kidding) I was fortunate enough to be asked to bring our gelding, OH Silas to ride the introductory eval. english test with Anne Appleby commenting. She is wonderful! I can not say enough good about her, she is honest, sweet, knowledgeable, humble, great with horse and people, very nice to be around, just makes you feel so comfortable. I felt like I had private lessons with her all weekend, what an honor. I rode the test and then Anne cut it down and showed the people what some of the things Judges are looking for, steady tempos, smooth transitions, distinct gaits, bend, on the bit and the people seemed to really like that. They were able to see the difference as she would ask me to show them a good trot, then a slow or fast trot, one that was slow, fast, slow, fast, etc. Having a visual helps so much. Nancy Hotovy rode the western introductory and the advance with Gayle Ware commenting. Another woman with incredible knowledge. I did not know how funny Gayle is, she keeps you in stitches all the time. These two woman are just incredible, you people out west you are very very blessed I was just trying to soak in everything they had to say. I know our club was very glad they came to share and help us learn how we can show our Fjords to the best of their ability. Rich Hotovy had Bob Gudknecht driving his mare in the draft test as Rich told what was to be done. Hotovy's used the same mare for riding as for draft and she is wonderful! Smooth, steady and totally willing and obedient. Rich has trained her right, when she hears him start to talk to other people, I think she knows she better take a nap as it could be awhile, cause she never moves until told to, and if you know Rich it could be a while! They just did a outstanding job. Believe we had around 70 in attendance. Those that came out inspite of the weather were sure glad they did. The MWFHC is a progressive and active group. One that works well together and yet is very diverse, it's a great club. A big Thank you to Green Valley Farms in Galena IL, Pat Holland, Sophie and Howard Fielder plus staff all work so hard to put on a great meeting/clinic. On Sunday GVF had an Open House to show off their new stallion plus their other studs. I know everyone was impressed with their stock. They truly are looking to keep the breed pure with great quality. They should be very proud. Not only do they have great stock they have a great facility where they can train them the way they need to be, so they will be great quality working Fjords. Thank you again, Anne and Gayle for surviving our Midwest winter, I'll try and work on the executive committee to move it to Hawaii next year, actually that sounds good to me!! Any Fjords in Hawaii though Patti Jo Walter and Silas

MWFHC winter meeting
This message is from: Philis Anderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Fjord people, A voice in the snowy northern Minnesota wilderness (at last). Now I can take my Fjords out for a sleigh ride. We've had bare ground all of December; rare up here. I have a question about the Midwest Fjord Meeting in Galena, Illinois. Because of my job commitment, I cannot attend the meeting and learning(training) sessions that Wayne Hipsley will conduct. Would anybody video the sessions and have for sale such video? Profits possibly going to Wayne and,or MWFHC. If this is a possibility, please let me know. I have to play a concert in Duluth, MN with the DSS orchestra that week-end. My Fjords are happy for the new snow. They are rolling, digging, jumping, running and laying in the white stuff. True Norwegians of some sort!
