Libby show cancellation
This message is from: "Sherrie Dayton" Good morning all, After 27 years the International Fjord Horse Show in Libby Montana has been cancelled. This show has been getting smaller over the last few years and with the small amount of competitors entered for this year's show we made the painful decision to cancel this year's show. PNFPG had already made the decision that this would be our last year in Libby as part of their Nordicfest celebration. We are actively looking for a new venue and date for a Fjord horse show in the Northwest starting in 2015. We'll keep you all informed and hope to see some of you in 2015 in a new location. Over the years Ron and I have made some wonderful friends that we only got to see at Libby and I'm hoping that we can all still get together in a new location, I have to say that this is bittersweet, I'm sad to see Libby end but an excited to see what we can do for the future. Hope to see you all in the future, Sherrie Dayton sunw...@jrcda.com Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l
Driving Radio Show Interview - Rose Parade
This message is from: "Teressa" Here is a link to the Driving Radio Show podcast. Holly Finnoe worked to set this up - as if she doesn't have enough to do getting parade ready - and she and Ben Finnoe and I were interviewed. The fjord interview begins around 15:43 but prior to that is great information about driving programs and after is an interview with a vet about blankets and problems they could cause. Worth listening to it all! http://drivingradioshow.horseradionetwork.com/2013/12/19/driving-radio-show- episode-128-rose-parade-norwegian-fjords-perils-of-poorly-fitted-blankets/ I think all 13 horses will be leaving home on Christmas Day headed to Pasadena - so, including today, only 5 more days to get ready. Yikes! Our unit is #79 out of 91 units. The parade is televised by ABC, NBC, KTLA (an LA station), HGTV, Univision (Spanish), and RFD TV. HGTV, RFD-TV (if you have this, you know it, but many people do not) and KTLA will air the parade in its entirety so you can be sure to see us on those. ABC and NBC cut away to commercials, so coverage isn't a sure thing on those stations. Equestfest, on December 29, will be aired by RFD TV on December 29 at 3 pm. I don't know which time zone this is so check your program schedule at RFDTV.com. This is a show featuring performances by each equestrian unit. We have a great one planned - but only one day of rehearsal (yikes). And before you ask, we have contracted with a company in LA to place all of our televised coverage from every outlet and also from RFDTV of Equestfest on a DVD. We hope to upload this to You Tube for maximum coverage. And we also have a photographer's badge for our own photographer to collect images - still and video. And of course, our participants will be taking photos and several will have Go Pro cameras (video cameras that are strapped to head or helmet or chest or carriage etc) to collect footage as well. But watch us live if you can! We'll have folks posting events as they occur on Facebook, probably on the chat list, and any other way we can. MWFHC Horse Show
This message is from: "coy...@acrec.com" I will leave it to others to talk about their insight about the classes, horses, and riders at this year's MWFHC Horse Show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. What I want to share is how the show was a fun, mellow, relaxed experience. There were lots of smiles and few (if any) tears or frowns. Many folks pitched in cheerfully and made the show happen without a lot of drama or confusion. A huge reason for this success was our show committee of Monie Redfield, Julie Cramer, and Sarah Weyker who were ably assisted by record keeper Anne Weyker and a bevy of gatekeepers, ring stewards, ribbon hander-outers, time keepers, and errand runners of all ages. At one point during the driving games, a happy flock of kids replaced knocked-down cones and balls on the course, giving tired adults a little breather. The staff at the Equestrian Center, with years of experience hosting horse shows, commented that our show was much better organized and run than most they've seen. The judge also appreciated the smooth operation -- competitors entered the ring promptly, courses were set up efficiently, and the ring stewards and announcers did their jobs well. Pop Wagner entertained a small group of folks on Saturday night with classic cowboy poetry, songs, and rope tricks. His performance added to the mellow atmosphere of the show. He taught mohair cinch making in the afternoons to a group of us in the arena lobby, giving passerby the chance to learn more about this old craft. We even got him on a borrowed Fjord to barrel race, and he showed us how it should be done. :-D Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l
MWFHC Breed Show
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" The Midwest Fjord Horse Club's Breed Show was this last weekend. Got home safe and sound last night. Just HAD to write in and tell you as much as I can remember about it. IT WAS AWESOMEOur show was down in numbers but not in spirit and fun. PLUS an added bonus was meeting so many locals that come to watch our horses, AND we had folks that came from TX, WY, SC, & MO that came JUST TO WATCH! The ones from MO had come last year as they were passing thru with their whole family, this year just the parents came. The others heard about our show and came just to see it! How special is that! We had lots of spectators around the ring cheering everyone on. Especially in the games driving classes when one would hit cones you could hear them feeling bad for the driver! Was cute how everyone wants you to make it thru the cones and even more so when you are having troubles. The other real special treat of the show was the weather, it was tailor made for us. We had temps in the low 70's this year. Our horses hardly broke a sweat, can't really say the same for the owners, but we tend to get more nervous I think then the horses. Plus some of us, are running around like a chicken with their head cut off, as we tend to over extent ourselves. :-) You know our fjord horses REALLY do it all. Man, we have so many TALENTED horses in our club. And, not only talented but VERSATILE. WOW, so many do it ALL, ride/drive/jump/showmanship/gymhana. That is always so cool to see. We have such a SUPER breed of horse Our numbers might have been down this year, but again the spirit of horse/owner was not. It seemed to have just been a perfect storm with individual situations causing members to have to skip this year. It has been a tough year for many, I will say we felt your presence with us, we know you all wanted to be there, and we hope next year you can make it. One of the youth riders who was new this year, her whole family came to watch her including her mom/grandma/aunt. Her aunt asked if our show was always this much fun as they have been to other breeds shows and said those were way too stressful and that our show was filled with laughter, fun, helpfulness and comradery. THANK YOU show committee for working your butts off to make this show ANOTHER very successful show. THANK YOU everyone for SUPPORTING YOUR CLUB by donating money for the show, by coming with horse(s), or by coming to help. This ALL helps to put on a GREAT SHOW Patti Jo Walter Francis Creek Fjords Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l
Blue Earth Show
This message is from: Therine Gudknecht We just returned from the 28th Annual Fjord Show at Blue Earth and I have to tell everyone what a great time we had. For anyone who has been there, you know that is always the hottest week in July and it usually storms. This year the weather was perfect and no rain. It is always so fun to see all of the people who we only see once or twice a year. A good time was had by all. A few people came to watch that no longer show and it was also great to see them. The kids had so much fun too. They always look forward to buying toy tractors from the tractor guy. Even the big boys buy them. They love the fair and the fair food especially the onion rings. They had fun swimming in the hotel pool. Our grandson Brady thinks Blue Earth is like Disney World! They showed their horses and just had a great time. Now we have to unload three trailers, wash everything and put everything away. The horses are certainly enjoying being back home in their pasture and relaxing. Next week we start getting ready for the Steele County Fair in Owatonna. We hope everyone going to Cedar Rapids this weekend has a great time there also! My first "show"
This message is from: Alice MacGillivray Well, it wasn't really a show, but it was a wonderful, safe, show-like experience. As some of you probably recall, I've been going through lots and lots of learning curves with my first horse (Bocina from Bluebird Lane, originally from Pennsylvania with Prisco as her sire). Having a few months of dry weather and a lesson almost every week from a good coach (weather permitting) has made a big difference. Our coach (who is also a judge and works primarily with dressage but also with driving, hunter-jumpers etc.) offered to come to our island for a clinic/test day and it was great. Lori from Bluebird Lane put together a nice e-zine piece on the experience: http://www.bluebirdlane.com/e-zine/?p=iyriyl-20121003.html Thanks again to all of you for providing ongoing information and inspiration, and thank you again to those of you who have specifically replied to my questions about riding and even back when about whether Bocina and I seemed like a good fit. (Alice: "We are!" Bocina: "Now that she's finally learning a few things, there is potential.") This message is from: divingduoandcor...@comcast.net Thank you Curtis! I read about her last year.  Found this in the text... " A 4 year old 3/4 Fjord-1/4 Percheron draft cross that I am delighted with! Montana Spirit is bright and willing and eager to learn, she is slightly lighter than Essie Pearl and will be a bit taller but the pair are,as you can see beautiful. She will be my riding horse and Essie will remain as the sturdy, reliable pack horse, responsible for her precious cargo-Claire. Montana Spirit comes to me from Swede Granstrom and Dotie Smith that raise the Fjord/draft cross." The pictures are really interesting as are the posts from a visitor riding along for a while. Montana Spirit looks 100 percent fjord ... as is Essie Pearl. Beth, Bob, the Corgis and the Fjord Subject: RE: Today Show with fjords This message is from: "Curtis" You can follow her progress at http://www.endeofthetrail.com/blog/.  Currently, she is on a Canadian loop.  She is a great ambassador for Fjords and horses! This message is from: "Gayle" This message is from: "ruth bushnell" This message is from: "Ursula Jensen" ursu...@gmail.com> Yes, thanks to a core group of dedicated Group members, the Show goes on. . Gayle Ware was always there with her infamous Dusty!! Brian Jensen ummm, I believe that would be "famous," as "infamous" definition is: a.. Well known for some bad quality or deed. a.. Wicked; abominable: "infamous misconduct". "infamous" is a more appropriate term for some humans. ..as far as I know, Dusty has always been an extremely well behaved and all around GOOD horse. I am also very glad that there are those who never gave up on the Libby show, shut it down, or move it elsewhere. Hi All, Ruthie, thank you for clarifying the definition of 'infamous'. I knew what he meant - at least I think I do - Brian I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS??!! LOL!! I, too, am glad that the Libby show still goes on. I was there when the show was conceived, went through it's labor pains, watched it struggle as it took it's first steps, watched it graduate into the, then, largest all Fjord show in the country. Those were the days - filled with really great times and many memories. I am really glad that there are folks willing to dedicate their time and energy to make the show keep on keepin' on. Libby Show Memories
This message is from: "Ursula Jensen" Yes, thanks to a core group of dedicated Group members, the Show goes on. My first memories of Libby was a pairs class with Chip Lamb, Larry Boe, Orville Unrau, Ron Davis, the Frakers, and ourselves, the Jensen's. Libby has had many Unique Hitches shown there over the years. I remember seeing Tandems, Random's and yes Quadroms/4 singles, shown to the local crowd. As well there were many, unicorn, fours-ups, and four abreast plus a suicide hitch we drove which consisted of a tandem driven in front of a pair. Visitors from afar came through Libby like John Hegdal, Arne Presthus, and David Clove from Norway. Eike and Susie Schon-Pederson from Germany. I remember Dave McWethy arriving with his three abreast from travelling across America. We hosted the Hotovy's, Davis's, Giggarie's , Pederson's and of course Beth and Sandy from Colorado. Gayle Ware was always there with her infamous Dusty!! Libby has always been a shared show between Americans and Canadians which gave it an International flavor. The show grounds are family orientated suiting all kinds of classes. This year they had a full Trail Class in the bush behind the arena, and a mini CDE around the grounds. Lots of new ideas being tried. My thanks to all the hard workers and volunteers over the years. This is what memories are made of! I consider it a privilege to have been there. Libby Show
This message is from: "Barb and Fred" Karen McCarthy wrote:> Barb, would you be willing to let us all know how the Libby show was? Sure wish i could have gone but couldn't take time off... Karen and all, Libby was great this year as always. Such a good bunch of people. The show committee put together a really fun show. The classes were arraigned is such a way as to minimize tack changes. But still with a mix of ridden and driven classes each day. The mini marathon was a lot of fun with well planned route and good hazards. It all flowed well. There were ridden and driven dressage classes also. We had three unique hitches: Michael Sabatini's tandem, Dick Renfro's 4 abreast, and Ben Fenoe's unicorn. Good to see more unique hitches again. Of course we also had the usual Western and English classes and the normal Driving classes. Including Farm Hitch and log skid. We also had fun games like keyhole, barrels and poles for the kids and kids at heart (of which there are plenty!). Our judge this year was Terry Jones, a well known NW driving trainer and horse show judge. She did a great job. Saturday night we had our potluck and live auction. We raised quite a bit with the auction but I don't have that figure. It was great to visit with our "Fjord Family". Anyone who gets the chance to come to Libby will loves it as much as Fred and I do. Midwest Fjord Horse Club Show
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" Got home late last night from our MWFHC Breed Show held in Cedar Rapids IA. We did roll in at the tail end of a bad storm here on the lake shore but we arrived safe and sound. WHAT A SHOW Oh was it GREAT, I know I say it every year but every year it is GREAT! S much fun showing with Family and Friends. I do have to say I MISSED MY BFF (Best Fjord Friend) Joni Griffin. She had to attend a family wedding, but LOVED Seeing everyone else!!! Also Missed Chuck Kelly and DeeAnna Weed. They are such great workers at the show, last year Chuck was our ring master, this year Bob Cramer stepped( he has done it in the past), both are Fantastic Ring Masters and GREAT Volunteers! First want to THANK ALL those that Volunteered WOW, we have some fantastic workers and the show would NOT work without you!! THANK YOU so much. I would also like others to think about stepping in for next year. It would be so wonderful if we could get some new folks to join in. Some of the workers would like to do more with their horses at the show, and it is a great things when new folks join in, so think about perhaps volunteering. Email Monie Redfield or Kathy B. NOW and ask what you might be able to do to help out at the show? mredfi...@hotmail.com kblaszc...@yahoo.com Monie and Kathy are our show committee and they are super! The hours they spend BEFORE the show and then during the show they are working for US, the entire time! THANK YOU! Plus we had Anne Weyker and Julie Snape in our show announcer's booth, another couple of ladies that worked their butts off announcing and keeping track of the books. Which isn't easy, as I personally know our group is forever adding and cancelling classes. THANK YOU both! Oh speaking of folks volunteering I have to personally thank MIKE SADLON AND TYLER SCHLICKMAN. They did a GREAT job of demonstrating log skidding and giving EVERYONE a try at it. Plus they worked hard all weekend manning the gate or helping out setting things up. AND. I didn't get the gentleman's name but we had a fellow from NEW YORK volunteering. WHAT A GREAT GUY!! THANKS for coming! I'm sure I am gonna miss mentioning someone, I don't mean to. I know that Heike did a LOT this year setting up classes, Kristin and Anna Lee also set up the trail class, next year we just have to make sure Kristin remembers her glasses so she can see the pattern!! Hahaha that was funny. Probably funny to me, as I'm in that same boat of needing my glasses but I never have them on! Thank you all too for coming. What a great group. We had several come this year with a boat load of kids and moms. That was really cool to see and are they wonderful young riders. That really made the show special to see these kids and having such a great time too! Our Judge this year was Dave Schwartz and he was our judge 3 yrs ago. He made a comment to me after the show was over that he thanked me for asking him to judge our show as he had such a wonderful time the first time 3 yrs ago and again this year, enjoyed it immensely. He also said that he thought the caliber of horses and riders had improved. He was very impressed with our show. Our Photographer Angie Reich told me that she also really enjoyed being asked to come and be the photographer of our show and said, "you guys are REALLY versatile, what a GREAT show". She will have pictures up on her website http://www.myredbarnphoto.com hopefully very soon. I'm sure I could go on and on but will let others post and tell about the show, it was in a nutshell THREE GLORIOUS DAYS of being with GREAT FOLKS AND FJORDS! Oh the KIRKWOOD HOTEL HAS to be mentioned too. If you come next year and what a hotel room, STAY THERE, WOW you will not be sorry WHAT A HOTEL and it is reasonable $89 if you are with the horse show! Really you will be glad you did, I miss that bed! THANK YOU EVERYONE what a weekend!!! RFD TV- Airing the MWFHC Fjord Breed Show
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" With the Midwest Fjord horse club moving their show to Cedar Rapids IA this year, it gave the Fjords a few more exposures that we didn't have before. Like giving us the opportunity to have Joe Mischka come and video some of our breed show for RFD-TV. I just got word from him that it will air on Oct 28, at 11 pm Central Time, and probably also at 1 p.m. that same day unless they run a livestock auction that afternoon in which case it will show only at the 11 p.m. time slot. Pretty exciting. I "believe" this will be the first time a portion of a Fjord show will be aired on RFD-TV. Hopefully first of many. J Joe Mischka is editor of RURAL HERITAGE, a wonderful and educational magazine that you can check out online at www.ruralheritage.com. They are working partners with RFD TV and you can check out the fall line-up of shows at http://www.ruralheritage.com/video_arena/rfdtv.htm and it looks as if you can BUY the DVD if you are unable to watch it, or maybe you would like to do both! I am not getting any kick back from this, I just wanted to get the word out and am proud of our breed making it on TV! Blue Earth Show
This message is from: I've been asked how the Blue Earth Fjord show at the Faribault County Fair went this year so I thought I'd let everyone know. It was really really hot. There were thirty Fjords there so it was a nice number. They called it the five dollar horse show - five dollars a stall and five dollars a class. Most of the entries were in the driving classes. Heike beat me in ladies cart and Jennifer Kelling beat me in ladies team. Jennifer was driving our horses though so I didn't feel quite so bad about that one. There were quite a few kids entered in the riding and driving classes. The judge did a great job of helping the kids by telling them what they did right and how they could improve for next time. He was great and I think all the kids had fun. The pool was welcome relief at night to cool off. We all had a really fun time even in the heat and most of the people said they would be back next year. There was one lady who had never seen a horse harnessed before and she was very interested in the process. Apparently she did a lot of sketching of horses during the show but I didn't get to see any of her pictures. I wish I could have seen them. We shared the barn with the 4-H people and they were very interested in the Fjord horses. They wondered how we could tell them apart! The Steele County Fair in Owatonna is having a horse show with Fjord classes on August 20 and 21 if anyone is interested in attending another show. You can find the entry forms on the Steele County Fair website. MWFHC Fjord Breed show
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" The MWFHC Fjord Breed Show made it to year 26 and survived. It was a hot one! The club voted to move the show and the board found a lovely facility in Cedar Rapids IA. July 16-18 we showed. We started off the weekend with dinner Friday night, we had over 80 for dinner. After dinner we held our business meeting. The meeting was light hearted and productive, setting the mood for the weekend. Saturday was halter, trail and driving. Sunday the temps got hotter and muggier, all were glad we had an indoor to show in. Sunday was the English classes in the morning and more driving in the afternoon. Monday about as hot as the day before, western was on this day, then games in the afternoon. We had over 460 entries showing once again how versatile the Fjords are. The top winners of the show( I believe we ALL are winners but the top ones )are as follows: Versatility: High Point - Anna Lee - 48 points - Bluebird Lane Jaeger Reserve - Jessica Reuterskiold -38 points - Wood's Kandi High Point Driver Kay Van Natta - 13 points Reserve Driver - a tie - Jessica Reuterskiold and Sami Poirier -each with 12 points Adult High Point Jessica Reuterskiold - 42 points Reserve Adult High Point Anna Lee - 38 points Youth High Point Allison Austin - 31 points Reserve Youth High Point Emily LeGreve - 16 points As always it goes by so fast, and as always it is GREAT to see so many friends and to make new ones. We had several new members come to this show with it's new location. We had several come and watch the show and were thrilled the show was in their neck of the woods so they could come and see it. We also had RFD TV come and film on Saturday, they will be making a 30 minute segment for their cable show. I'll keep everyone posted when it will air , either Aug or Oct. Forgot what he told me. So many Thank you's to go out. Kathy B. and Monie R. our show chairs, Julie S. and Vicki H. our announcers, all of our ring stewards, gate persons, ribbon presenters, Anne W. for ALL she does with the record keeping, our safety delegates, our division heads, the board, Dawn for selling merchandise for our club, those that help with set up and take down. THANK YOU ALL And Thank you all for coming, it was a lot of work, it was extremely hot and I hope you all had a great time, I know I sure did. BUT. then again I tend to get quite a few ideas in my head on how to even have MORE fun at a horse show!! Fjord in Kill Pen and Finger Lakes Fjord Horse Show
This message is from: momste...@aol.com Hello Fjord Friends- First, I am so sorry to learn about that Fjord (whether full or part breed) in a kill pen. These are awful times for so many people. To think of all those horses being sent to slaughter is just heartbreaking.. Yet, I sit here and am unable to do anything. I did email a friend of mine who lives in PA to see how close he was to the auction. Yet, who knows what price they've put on the mare. Life can be so hard and cruel sometimes. On a brighter note, the Finger Lakes Fjord Horse Show will be running this weekend in Weedsport, NY. We are still accepting entries if you feel like coming at the last minute. Again, times are hard for a number of people, so our registrations are down from last year. However, I know we will have a good show and enjoy the Fjords and their owners who do come. If you want to just come and be a spectator, that's great too! We have a beautiful stained glass piece donated by Martie Bolinski to be raffled off at our Saturday night banquet at Devaney's in Weedsport. So, think about joining us for that! Have a great weekend! I hope we can all stay cool! MWFHC Fjord breed show
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" Just thought I'd post and remind everyone that the 26th Annual Upper Midwest Norwegian Fjord Horse Show will be this WEEKEND in CEDAR RAPIDS IA. We will be showing at the Iowa Equestrian Center. You can get directions off the club's website. www.mwfhc.org or see www.iowaequestrian.com for directions and information on the facility. The MWFHC has grown over the years both in numbers and skill. This is our first year at this location but it is the same great show. We are all anxious, nervous, excited but I think everyone will soon settle in nicely and appreciate being under one roof with all the nice amenities. The best part is being there with friends and other Fjord owners. Just seeing a barn full of Fjords is a sight to see! Anyone wishing to come last minute is more than welcomed to come. Entries are in, but we ALWAYS welcome more. You can email myself, or get more information off the club's website under events. AND, if you can't come with a horse, maybe you can come and watch, enjoy the Fjords and cheer us on! We would love to have you. For those showing, watch your email box, stall assignment and last minute information will be coming your way. Fjord Evaluation and Show in Virginia
This message is from: mabo...@aol.com Greetings to the List, I'm happy to confirm that there will be a one-day Evaluation on 7/14 at Frying Pan Park in Herndon, VA. We have participants coming from NJ, PA, WV, MD, VA, NC and DC. We'll be doing conformation as well as performance tests (every discipline except Western riding). As so many of you know, Evaluations are open to the public and are a terrific educational experience. Please let me know if you want further information on the NFHR Virginia Evaluation. We hope to see many Fjord owners and fans there. After the Evaluation we are holding the Mid Atlantic Small Draft Horse Festival (http://www.masdhf.com) at Frying Pan Park on 7/16-17. Unlike the Midwest, we don't have nearly the number of Fjords to support a breed show. I wish, but we are not there yet. We tried for a few years and decided we would expand to include Gypsies, Haflingers, Drum, Fell, Dale and other small draft breeds. It goes without saying that Fjords will be well represented. I am expecting that the Fjords will do very well, too. If you are interested in coming, with or without a horse, just go to our web site for information or send me an email. Margaret Bogie Ironwood Farm Rixeyville, VA ***We have some very nice Fjords for sale (our own or consignments) at all skill levels from young stock to experienced dressage and eventing horses. California EVH-1 Clear for two days AND show recommendations
This message is from: Gail Russell Equine Herpes Virus Alert California EHV-1 Causing EHM Disease Update as of 12 pm 5/25/2011 California has no new confirmed cases of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) caused by EHV-1 since our May 23rd update. There continues to be 18 confirmed EHM cases in the state. * The positive confirmed cases are located in the following 12 counties: Amador(1), Glenn(2), Kern(2), Los Angeles(1), Marin(1), Napa(1), Placer (3), Plumas(1), Sacramento (1), Shasta(1), Stanislaus(3) and Ventura(1). * Sixteen(16) of the confirmed positive EHM CA cases participated in the National Cutting Horse Association's Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah. * Two (2) of the confirmed positive EHM CA cases participated only in the Kern County Cutting Horse Event on May 13th in Bakersfield, CA. * One confirmed positive EHM horse was euthanized after showing severe neurological signs associated with EHM. * All positive confirmed EHM cases are under a State Quarantine. California Department of Food and Agriculture is working with animal Health officials in the western states to monitor the disease outbreak and investigate the source of the disease outbreak. Disease reports in California continue to be limited to horses exhibited at the National Cutting Horse Association's Western National Championships (NCHA) held at the Golden Spike Event Center in Ogden, Utah from April 30th to May 8, 2011 and the Kern County Cutting Event in Bakersfield, CA on May 13, 2011. CDFA has quarantined all infected horses and continues to advise that horses returning from those events and horses that have subsequently come into contact with returning horses avoid moving from their home premises until California has gone 14 days without a new case of EHM. Recommendations for Horse Show/Event Managers Regarding EHV-1 Biosecurity Procedures (These biosecurity guidelines have been developed, based on currently available information, by CDFA veterinarians and the faculty at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, CA, to minimize the risk of transmission of infectious diseases at public equestrian events. If the situation changes, these and other guidelines will be modified as appropriate.) When the current EHV-1 outbreak began, horse owners were initially advised to avoid nonessential transport of their animals to reduce the risk of exposure to, or spread of the virus among, the horse population. Now that we have obtained more information through ongoing testing, reporting and monitoring, we have concluded that the EHV-1 infection outbreak is centered around horses that were present at the National Cutting Horse Association's Western National Championships (NCHA) held at the Golden Spike Event Center in Ogden, Utah from April 30th to May 8th. and/or the Kern County Cutting Event in Bakersfield, CA on May 13th. This includes cutting horses that did not attend either of the above events but have subsequently come into contact with horses returning from those events. Based on what is known today, we are suggesting that managers of horse shows or events occurring in California during the coming weeks incorporate the following biosecurity measures to minimize the risk for all participants: 1. Event managers should create a short document for participants to sign upon arrival at the show grounds to confirm that their horses, mules, and burros attending the show/event have not attended or had prior contact with horses from the NCHA Championships in Ogden, Utah and/or the Kern County Cutting Event in Bakersfield, CA, or been on the same premises with horses that have returned from these events. Horses that have attended, or been exposed to horses returning from either event will not be allowed to enter the show grounds. 1. Establish a "No Fever" policy for horses attending the event. Give the participants prior notice of the new "No Fever" policy before they arrive at the show grounds. Provide instructions for obtaining the horse's temperature and an index card on which to record temperature readings for each horse. * a. All horses will have temperatures taken twice daily and results will be posted on front of the stall/pen for inspection. * b. Any horse will be subject to random temperature check by the show veterinarian or designated member of the veterinary staff during the event. * c. Any horse with a fever of 102°F or greater will be removed from the event and premises immediately (i.e. within 2 hours of detection of fever). * d. If the owner cannot move the horse off the premises, a professional horse hauler contracted by the event will remove the horse to a designated isolation area at the owner's expense. 2. It is understood that some (most) horses with a fever will not have EHV-1; however, in the interest of conducting a safe event under the current circumstances, the no fever policy will b

This message is from: Karen McCarthy "...I specifically went to an instructor who teaches canter from the walk. She says it's easier for the horse to organize her feet for canter from walk rather than trot, and I believe she's right." AMEN to the above...I have come to believe in this idea & always teach a horse to canter from the walk. If you do all your basics correctly, and don't make a big deal about it, they get it, and don't get all rushy, stumbly and overall panicky like they do when you ask them to pick it up from a trot. I think they are much more balanced, at least initially and then the get strung out, but the horses eventually get stronger and more confidant. FJORDS ROCK! or Our First Horse Show
This message is from: Karen Keith Brag Alert! Wow, I've waited a long time to get to write an email like this. But today was one of those days where you just want to let someone (everyone) know. Today was the day I took my Bella (Nor-Fin's Ellen) to her first horse show. We have been doing a lot of trail riding and also participating in musical rides (kind of quadrille stuff) with my local riding club since the start of the year, but I thought this low-level fun show would be a good test to see how Bella would do with strange horses (and colorful jumps) in an outdoor arena. I plan to show Bella at the Small Draft Festival in Virginia (being held in connection with the eval in July), and I just wanted to expose her to a show situation. My dear Bella did not disappoint. She wasn't the least bit fazed at being among all the strange horses and ponies. She was the only Fjord, and of course she got lots of comments and compliments. The show was held at a hunter facility, and all the other horses were TBs, TB crosses (field hunter types) and hunter ponies. Bella was certainly the odd man out. We entered five classes, two in hand and three ridden. All the ground work and liberty work I do with Bella paid off in droves in hand. We took 2nd in the halter/conformation class, and I have no doubt that had to do, in part, with the fact that Bella will really trot out in hand. I hadn't done much of this with her since her eval two years ago, but we have done other in hand work, and when I asked her to go, she did. As soon as I knew she was right there with me, I lengthened my stride to really show that she can and will move. The second class was showmanship, where we had to perform a pattern -- a circle right at trot, stop, quarter turn left, then back up, and stand for presentation. We placed 1st in showmanship. Woo hoo! We entered three ridden classes -- Greenie Hack W/T, Greenie Hack W/T/Back up, and Greenie Hack W/T/Individual Canter. I told you this was a low-level show. :^) And don't worry, I was not the only grownup in there mowing down Pony Clubbers. Not that anyone mowed down Pony Clubbers; in fact, it was we adults who had to watch out for kids on ponies. They seem to be quite unaware that there is anyone else in the ring. But the class was mostly adults on big honking hunters, and me on my golden pony. In the walk/trot class, I mostly worked with Belle to try to get her bending properly. That horse loves to drop a shoulder and bulge through her corners. So I was pleasantly surprised at placing 4th. In the walk/trot/back up class, it was pretty much more of the same, I continued working on her bending and softening to my inside rein. Her back up was a bit slow, but without all that unsightly (and gotta be uncomfortable) pulling on her mouth. I wasn't surprised at her less than exuberant response to the back up since she had been standing there quite relaxed awaiting her call to back. I will have to think about how to bring up her energy in prep for backing without first getting a forward step. Anyone have any ideas? I was completely surprised when we were called as 1st place. I think that judge must have liked my Fjordie. Finally we came to the walk/trot/individual canter class. This one was W/T/W, reverse direction, W/T/W, then line up nose to tail at the end of the arena and strike off at a canter one at a time to canter around on the rail for about 3/4 of the ring, rejoining the back of the line. Now this may not seem like a big deal, but canter departs and just cantering in a ring are something I had just introduced to Bella. When I first got Belle, she definitely had some anxiety about the canter. Last summer and this year, we have been throwing some canter into our trail rides, and with encouragement and generally good experiences, her anxiety has subsided. She is learning to enjoy moving out with her trail buddies. However, in a riding ring it was a different story. She would get rushy and strung out. So instead of allowing that to become ingrained, I specifically went to an instructor who teaches canter from the walk. She says it's easier for the horse to organize her feet for canter from walk rather than trot, and I believe she's right. It certainly looks a lot nicer. We do a lot of transitions, W/T/Halt/T/W etc., and when asking for canter, it's from trot, transition to walk for two or three steps, canter. The trot creates the energy, while the few walk steps allow her to organize her feet before striking off. Initially, Belle was still skeptical, and my aids were less than fluid, but with a bit of encouragement with a whip tap, a buck from Belle as she leapt into canter, and lots of praise for her try, she has come around nicely in just two lessons and a bit of work at home. Which brings me back to today's show. When it was Bella's turn to leave the group (psychologically difficult for t

Greeley Evaluation and RMFHC show
This message is from: Starfire Farm Well, it seems like this past week has been a busy time for Fjord horse enthusiasts. The Rocky Mountain Fjord Horse Club just completed our NFHR Evaluation for 2010 as well as the first RMFHC show. Our club had to overcome a couple of serious problems to pull this off, so I would like to thank EVERYONE involved, from the organizers to participants. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had an evaluator substitute at the last minute, with the need to move the dates forward by one day to accommodate Wayne Hipsley's schedule to allow him to to fill the vacant evaluator spot. Brain Jensen was able to change his schedule to meet our needs. To further accommodate the schedule change and help out with participants' work schedules, seven horses were evaluated in conformation at Starfire Farm on Wednesday evening, July 21st. The remainder of the evaluation and show was held at Tomora Training Center in Greeley, CO. Thursday morning began with a bang...literally. While turning in to the driveway at Tomora, Nancy Newport's horse trailer was sideswiped/rear-ended by a reckless driver. They guys' car had rolled over at least 1 1/2 times and looked like a crushed can. Debris was all over the highway. The driver had somehow survived the crash and was sitting near the wreckage of his car, attended by and talking with a passer-by (who just happened to be a nurse). Nancy was okay. The horses, thank goodness, were standing quietly in Nancy's two horse trailer, but the tires on the right side were blown out and the right fender was destroyed. Evaluators Wayne Hipsley and Brian Jensen drove in to find this scene. Brian, Nancy and I got the horses out of the trailer and someone walked them to a stall. They had no outward cuts or bruises, but after the Sheriff's investigation and the mess was cleaned up, the horses were not able to trot properly. A vet was called and the horses were given pain and anti inflammatory medication. Unfortunately, they were not able to participate in the evaluation. I hear they are doing okay now. We had some great help to pull off this evaluation. Laura Beller, fairly new to Fjords, spearheaded the organizing, paperwork, kept us on our toes as far as deadlines go and kept things moving along. She brought munchies, tablecloths and things that others might have overlooked. Thanks Laura! Jeanne Poirier was our Technical Delegate. Samantha Poirier was our Eval Secretary. She, along with Gary Holland and Tom Poirier, were also a great help setting up the Advanced Utility Riding course and the Draft course and schlepping things wherever they needed to be schlepped. Anne Arling made some spectacular food for the Wednesday evening portion of the eval! We had a barbeque on Thursday evening with food brought by Laura Beller (and including Anne's delicious leftovers). As usual, during the evaluation, Wayne Hipsley and Brian Jensen provided educational commentary regarding horses' conformation and performance tests. Wayne was impressed with the overall improvement of the quality in the horses compared to our evaluation in 2007. In addition to our local members' participation, we had horses from Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, from Divide, Avon and New Mexico. 25 in all were entered. The evaluation ended Friday late morning, as Wayne had to catch a plane to judge his next show. For an afternoon program, I gave a demonstration about the Baroque Classical dressage training I have been doing with BDF Obelisk, followed by Brian giving a mini clinic on driving. Much appreciated by all attendees. Saturday morning began our show. The first held for the Rocky Mountain Fjord Horse Club. Anne Arling spearheaded running the show. Brian Jensen judged halter, riding, driving and games. I judged the dressage classes. There were lots of smiles, lots of laughter, lots of camaraderie. It was a casual and fun time. Jeanne Poirier and Hanne won the Versatillity Award. Victoria Arling and Greenbriar Cezar won the Youth High Point. Jeanne Poirier also won the Adult High Point. Anna Poirier won the Fabulous Fjord Follies, which (for THIS show was: a "barricade" made up of bales of shavings and a dummy was on one side. The rider had to ride up, dismount, hop over the barricade, put a lariat over the dummy, mount up, ride enough to pull the dummy over the barricade, which pulled some of the bales over, then, dismount, take the lariat off and put the dummy over the horse and run back to the start/finish. For those people, they just had them not mount, to pull the dummy over the barricade. Fun and laughs during THAT one! Wendy Kipple was our eval and show photographer. From me, thanks to Christi Kipple for showing LTW Zeus in his first show. Thanks to everyone who stayed to help clean up. finger lakes show
This message is from: "lindy hild" Just home (and very tired!) from the Finger Lakes Fjord Horse Show in Weedsport, NY, where the committee arranged everything (except the humidity) beautifully! Congratulations and a big THANK YOU to Tammy Savery, Nora Lampman, Pat McCurdy, Barb Jones, Jean Kelly and Jim Raabe for all of their hard work and efforts on our behalf. Lots of interesting classes, Pat Wolfe to judge (and give helpful suggestions to all the competitors - THANKS! ) and a really delicious, festive and laugh-filled group dinner Saturday evening. Pretty scarey for us, following Curt Pierce's big gooseneck on I-81 coming into Syracuse and watching the back passenger side tire bounce off the trailer and zip across traffic and up the inside lane about a quarter mile, while sparks and smoke issued from the very unhappy axle! There was a very narrow pull-off area and all those semis roaring past didn't seem to upset those wonderful Fjord horses IN the trailer, but most of us humans were pretty shaken (except Curt, of course, he is so cool in a crisis!). Thanks to the wonders of cellphones, Jim Raabe with Marki and James was already enroute to the stranded ones even as we were arriving at the show grounds, worried and anxiously trying to figure out what could be done. By the time we had unloaded our two horses (Dagney and Sunhilde "Ziva"), the intrepid Curt and Jim had gotten the police involved and Solveig, Solvar, Hans and little Hildegard (first time off the farm, poor kid!) were walking down the closed lane of 81 and onto the Raabe trailer. The injured gooseneck arrived at the show grounds on a big trailer, and the unloading of that was quite a sight! Fortunately, everyone arrived at the barn safely, eventually! The men declared the wheel was an "easy fix" and by midday Saturday, parts had been found and the wheel was back on. Amazing to see lug nuts sheared off as if by a giant butter knife! Thank goodness for guys who know car stuff. The show was great fun although the water/footing in the arena made cantering a bit more exciting than usual.. The costume class was especially well attended and very photogenic! All those little kids and Fjordies, what could be cuter?. It was so lovely to see old friends and make new ones - everyone at this show is SO NICE! Can't wait for next year!! Lindy who has to go out today and unload/clean out the trailer (and Dagney, who is just happy to get home and have a good roll) Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

Finger Lakes Fjord Horse Show 2010
This message is from: momste...@aol.com Hello Fjord Friends- I've just returned from the Cayuga County Fairgrounds in Weedsport, NY. Participants arrived and we had a nice welcome pizza and refreshment affair. The Finger Lakes Fjord Horse Show will begin tomorrow, and those in attendance are the very best Fjord people. I'm so excited to be a part of this amazing group of people. No matter the distance or heat, they are here to show and enjoy. In fact, Curt Pierce lost a tire to his horse trailer on Route 81, just south of Syracuse. Handled the problem like a veteran. All is well and humans and horses are safe. Whew! Jim Raabe came to the rescue with his horse trailer... Fjord people are the best. I'm grateful Curt, his fellow travelers, and horses are all well! Hope the rain is done for the night and the ring will be ready for the show tomorrow morning. Finger Lakes Fjord Horse Show 2010! Breed Show in Blue Earth MN
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" AMAZING!!! Home from the Breed show in MN yesterday and I'm still grinning from ear to ear. What a GREAT time! We had around 90 horses, over 600 entries I believe, GREAT size classes, wonderful people and horses. Everyone has been working hard with their horses and it really showed! Monday night we went until 9:40PM!!! The draft classes were huge, I love the patience of those horses and their willingness to dig in and get the job done. Tuesday was English riding, jumping LOVE the jumping classes, those are my favorite. J Then driving in the afternoon. Some driving classes had to be split they were so big. THEN Tuesday evening we put on a special presentation for the community, we first honored our founding members. As this was our 25th anniversary show, we wanted to THANK those that started this great event 25 yrs ago. THEN we put on "Fjords got Talent" a spinoff of the TV show and BOY LET ME TELL YOU FJORDS DO HAVE TALENT! Our members do too!!! Not only those that volunteers like our MC(Julie Cramer), who was FANTASTIC, but also our 3 judges Chuckie Kandel, Karen Osborn and Piers Griffin. More talent was in EACH act as it was performed to music, we had jumping, single, team, unicorn, 4 horse hitches , 6 horse hitch, western-reining, English riders and a CDE performance. ALL were superb, and as a show we showed the community what Fjords can do and how much FUN you can have with your horse. It really was a GREAT time. Some high lights, David Lusty opening up the 4 abreast! Ughggh, OK he knows what he is doing, but that is a lot of horse power!! Watch out Rich Hotovy, you have competition with David!! Bob G. driving the 6 horse hitch, just takes my breath away each time I see it! Our Wizard of Oz group, cracks me up still when I see the pictures. We WERE CUTE!! Sorry, am bragging was in that group, but DANG we were cute! Heike with Thor doing the CDE, they can really kick up dirt! Jan Ethington, Lisa Lovett, The Dennis's, the Johnson's, Ali/Wendy, Andrew reining. I mean sooo much talent. REALLY THANK YOU ALL!!! OH and can NOT forget our commercials!! Mike Sadlon did a fantastic job of driving his horses and doing our commercials. Susie is SUPER creative and they had a commercial for Americinn-music Dream Weaver, Blue Earth Wine and Spirts-music 5:00 Somewhere, and Brome Publishing/Horse N Around Magazine -Music Thank you. These were just a few of our sponsors, the community of Blue Earth was very generous in donating to our 25th anniversary show and in return we wanted to thank them all. I do think Mike and Tyler Schlickman might have had a little too much "fun" with the Liquor store commercial!! VERY WELL DONE BOYS! As I think back about the show, I can't help but think about all those volunteers to help make it run so smoothly. The gate keepers, the show secretary who is there recording for 3 long days, our ring master, the announcer, the board , the show chairs, stall organizer, our club vendors, those selling to try and make us some money, all those helping everyone behind the scenes with their horses, or getting ready themselves. You are ALL TEAM PLAYERS! Plus all the volunteers who helped with the Tuesday night show, whether you were the MC, a Judge, gate keeper, or participated IN the Show, ALL TEAM PLAYERS, you do what is asked of you, you do it to the best of your ability and it sure showed Tuesday night, each and every one of you shined! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR VOLUNTEERING! REALLY I cannot express my appreciation enough, you all pitch in and make it happen, THANK YOU! As President of the club, I'm VERY proud of each and every one of you that gives of your time and or your talent or both. I'm very tired today and I hope I did not forget to mention anyone by name, if I did it truly was an oversight. I KNOW how much and how many worked/volunteered at our show. Sometimes it is a lot for my little brain to remember so much when on the spot, but I DO know and so does the club know how much everyone gave of themselves. So. until NEXT YEAR!!! Greeley Evaluation and Show
This message is from: Starfire Farm Hello Everyone, We have recently learned that our Evaluation has been approved! So, those of you who were sitting on the fence, it's a go, so come join us. As for our one-day show (the Sunday following the evaluation) it has been brought to our attention that our list of classes might be confusing regarding the order of go. The list is NOT indicative of the order of go of the classes. It is ONLY indicative of the classes we plan to offer, so those of you who think there won't be time for tack changes, etc. We WILL have time! We will MAKE time where necessary. We will try to have a prize list with the appropriate order of go up on the Rocky Mountain Fjord Club website by the end of next week. The main focus is that we all want to have FUN at this show, so come join in the fun! NW Fjord Horse Show info update
This message is from: Karen McCarthy For those planning on attending the Northwest Fjord Show at Happs (coming up soon!) I just wanted to clarify one item: All the combined driving and trail riding courses will be closed to all Northwest Fjord Show competitors after June 25th. You may drive and ride at will on the main trails throughout the site, (including the many creek crossings) but you must have a "buddy" with you:2 riders, or two drivers/vehicles. Please be on the honor system and don't school in any of the obstacles, no matter how tempting ;~)) On Thursday, July 8th, a practice cones course will be available to school in, and you are free to practice your ridden or driven dressage next to, but not inside of the grass dressage court that will be set up. There will also be plenty of schooling opportunities before the show in both the indoor and outdoor arenas. Happ's is a really wonderful & large venue with a diverse equestrian infrastructure, so different from the usual Fairgrounds set up.This is our first show here and we want to make this a safe but challenging experience for all so that we can continue to enjoy it at future shows. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact myself or another Show Committee member. Thanks! NW Fjord Horse Show
This message is from: Corinne Logan The 2010 Northwest Fjord Horse Show is coming faster than we all realize. Since it is six weeks earlier than in past years, many of are just starting to think about it and forgetting that the early entry date is June 10 for the show July 9-11th. So, start looking at your show packets and pick your classes. For those who havent downloaded the packet yet, it is on the PNFPG website under 2010 happenings. The show is going to be even bigger and better than last year. To all the great classes we have had in the past, we have added an HDT (Horse Driving Trial) which is one of the many reasons that the show is going to be at Happs in Ethel, Washington. In addition to the indoor and outdoor arenas, the 200 acre facility has lots of outdoor challenges like covered bridges, water hazards, a waterfall to ride or drive under, and critters like the real stuffed bear and coyote and the carved wooden troll. For the trail riders who are brave, there is a suspension bridge. We will be setting up the dressage, jumping and cones courses the day before the show so that anyone who wants to practice can do so. The facility will be open for anyone to practice trail obstacles or the marathon. We are going to have a silent auction again this year. Look through your vast array of too many things and pick out some to bring and donate. If you dont have anything that you dont need or use, go to your local tack or feed store manager and ask for a donation. If they know you at all, they want to keep you happy and will give you something. If they ask you what you have in mind, flash your cheesiest smile and suggest a saddle (or whatever is their most expensive item), and then add that you would be grateful for anything. Our silent auction and sponsorship dollars are important for making our show run in the black and we appreciate all the help we can get. Finally, the success of the show is because of our volunteers. We have had great help from our show committee and we still need people to help with setup and during the show. Please contact either David VanHoof or Kristin Miller if you are going to be there and want to help us make the show another huge success. Come and have fun at the 2010 Northwest Fjord Horse Show. Fjord Breed Show in Blue Earth MN
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" Peggy Spear made a wonderful ad for the MWFHC's upcoming Fjord Breed show this July in Blue Earth MN. Check it out at www.mwfhc.org We wanted to get it into the Fjord Herald but was not told of the earlier deadline so were not able to get it in this upcoming issue. Since we have these nice forums thought I"d just pass it along this way. Also, you all might be QUITE INTERESTED to know the class fee are ONLY $3 per class in celebration of our 25th anniversary show! How fun is that! Retro prices :-) We have also added some NEW youth classes to keep our youth interested and more to work on their skills!! Lastly we will be performing Tuesday evening in the Grand Stands for the community, still have room for any "acts" you might do with your horse(s). The evening is called "Fjords Got Talent" a spin off of America's Got Talent if you watch the show. We will not be judging it as a talent show, but we sure will have talent in the show! If you were at all on the fence about coming, I'd just like to encourage you to COME and CELEBRATE With us! We have a LOT of new sponsors this year, to help us make our show even bigger and better. Ole filly's first show
This message is from: woodberryfa...@comcast.net Last weekend I took "Willow" my almost 1 year old Ole filly to her first show. And mine too. It was just a small schooling show, but we were the only Fjord there. Being late, I missed the yearling halter, so we went into the color class halter. There were about 30 other horses in the class, mostly big Paint horses, all slicked out and in show halters, with chains over their noses. Then there was fuzzy little Willow in a nylon halter, because after all it was a schooling show! Anyway, I figured it was all for fun and learning. But we came in 3rd place! She was such a good girl, you would have thought she had been there many times. She loved the trotting part. The standing still was a little tougher. I really enjoyed it, and so did she. Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

This message is from: Starfire Farm If I remember correctly, didn't you have to have your application into the Rose Parade organizers by June of the previous year? When I was talking with someone about our quadrille performing at a one-evening performance at the Del Mar show (The Night of the Horse, or something like that) it was going to cost around $3,500 - $5,000.00 (can't remember which) just to get our team there, using our own trucks/trailers. That didn't count food, stabling, etc., just getting there. So...anyone up for a sponsorship? ;-) Beth Karen McCarthy wrote: >This message is from: Karen McCarthy > >Back when I was doing alot more parades I seriously considered entering a >group of Fjords in the RP about 9 (?) years ago. This message is from: "Jo Wilgus" Years back I got online and researched the parade application. It was like 5 pages long. Who would not want FJORDS in their parade? I am NOT one for "cocktails" for my horse before ANY work. Beth and Sandy? well those 2 are capable of anything they choose to undertake. I have silver (real) on my saddle I never use. I ride in my Crates that is nice and light and liftable. If the committee saw a photo of Regn they would pay me to have her in the parade. LA Eq. Center is a wonderful facility. RE: Rose parade. (was National Western Stock Show)
This message is from: Karen McCarthy Back when I was doing alot more parades I seriously considered entering a group of Fjords in the RP about 9 (?) years ago. Someone in our group had an "in" w/ the RP commitee and so we applied. It is a very rigorous undertaking. You don't 'just enter'. You have to do a pre-application to get through the door, then you are sent a binder that must be completed listing every rider/horse with accomplishments & photos down to the nth detail - they even wanted to know if the silver on the show saddles was sterling or plate! Well, when one of our group decided to bail on us, we sort of lost momentum in finding a replacement, and we didn't send in the final app. I think I still have the binder floating around somewhere... Yes, you DO have to be prepared to park your rig on a closed off section of freeway late the night before, and you you also have to agree to have your horse evaluated by the RP vets before embarking on the 5 mile parade route. If they deem your horse needs it, you HAVE to accept them administering a 'cocktail', or abandon the parade. It is also a requirement now that you also participate in the Equine Festival before the parade, and I think this is now a big affair, and may take place days before the parade, thus be prepared to be in LA for quite awhile. I believe they stable and hold the pre-parade doings at the LA Eq. Center. Can't remeber if you needed to pay for boarding, but I would assume so. I'd be up for doing the parade, but only if i didn't have to drive in LA, and if the rig used to park the night b4 was a LQ ;~) :: Karen McCarthy :: Great Basin Fjords :: Madras, Oregon :: http://www.picturetrail.com/weegees > Date: Sun, 4 Oct 2009 20:30:42 -0800 > Subject: Rose parade. Draft horse show, organic manure engineers, Lisa's trip
This message is from: Linda Lehnert Thank you for posting about the draft horse show, Diana. It was very interesting. Your Fjords are beautiful. Corinne, I enjoyed your posting about the organic manure engineers (chickens) and the other postings too on that topic. That's putting them to good use and, as you pointed out, you get to eat the eggs. My Norwegian grandmother always kept chickens so they could have fresh eggs, even in Dallas. We had some of hers left when I was a small child. My mother always said chickens would eat anything, including their own droppings. Lisa, your trip report is very interesting, a fun read. You shared a little bit of American history with your friend's sheep ranch visit and the old buildings they have. It doesn't sound like the climate's too great there though. I'm looking forward to part 3. Linda in Guben _ Invite your mail contacts to join your friends list with Windows Live Spaces. Big Brag Alert: Fjords Rule at the Old Dominion Show
This message is from: mabo...@aol.com Each year the Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Associations holds a big (2 day, 3 ring) show.??The typical class size ranged from 8 - 10 or more competitors.? In the past, there were a few Fjords, but this year we took over.? We had 11 Fjords there.? Tom and I brought 4, Lee Rouse had 5, Adrianne Foshay had 1 and Jamie Poniker had 1.? We would have had more except Curt Pierce and Sue Frievald were Show Secretary and Assistant Secretary, respectively.? I am proud to say that people were amazed by the Fjords' performance.? We were in the Small Draft Division competing against Gypsy Vanners and Haflingers.? I believe a Fjord won every English under saddle class there was -- hunter hack, English pleasure, jumper, trail and games.?? My mare, Helle, with junior rider Olivia Schiermeyer?just squeaked past Ironwood Blitzen (Diana Phillips) and NFR Shastamen (Cameron Rouse) to win the overall riding championship for the show. In driving, Noel Hersson and I drove Helle and Blitzen.? We swapped horses so we could run each one through the cones and obstacles.? We both flew.? The Fjords came in first or second in every timed driving class.? Noel, who some list members may recall is a paraplegic, had a blast.?Thanks to our joint efforts, Blitzen ended up winning the overall driving championship for the show with Helle close behind.? We even tried draft.? I need more practice to be really competitive at it, but it was fun, we pinned?and the Fjords were represented.? I believe that Helle won the overall show high point with Blitzen as the reserve.? Helle may have won the versatility award for riding, driving and draft, too.? I can tell you that we definitely shook things up there in Virginia this weekend.? Moses Lake Evaluation and show
This message is from: "Gayle Ware" Hi Everyone, Finally have gotten unpacked from our trip to the Moses Lake show and wanted to take time to jot a few lines about the show. It was GOOD! As always - hats off to the volunteers who made it all possible. What a super crew. Wed. morning began with a clinic by Wayne and Beth to put folks' nerves at ease and to, once again, give us the opportunity to learn. I, personally, always appreciate the chance to glean valuable information. I brought 5 horses from my barn, Dusty, Johan, Dustenai (owned by Mary Johnson), Brijten (owned by Deanna Haugen) and Johan's Smoky Topas (also owned by Mary Johnson). I was accompanied by Mary, Deanna and our 'horse show mommy', Sheri Vance. Sheri boards her Arab in my barn, but loves to travel with us as our GOFER and is invaluable help. Wed. Mary presented Dustenai for Conformation in the Evaluation. We were thrilled when Dustenai received her BLUE. Many of you may remember, Dustenai had belonged to Patty Peterson before Patty passed away a few years ago. Mary worked very hard preparing Dustenai for this Evaluation and we were quite sure that Patty was smiling down from above this week! Especially since Mary & Dustenai went on to receive their Silver Medallions for Intro. Western as well as their Silver Medallion for Intro. Driving with a score of 94!! Needless to say, I was so proud of my 'kids'! Mary's gray filly, Johan's Smoky Topas (can you GUESS who is her daddy?), is only 3 and I had put 90 day's training on her prior to the show. This was her debut Fjord show and we wanted it to be a low key, good learning experience for her. HOLY COW, I could not have asked for anything better from this filly. What an angel. She was pretty wide-eyed at all of the doings and commotion, but stayed tuned to me and took it all in stride, even when there were some scarey happenings such as the photographer accidently knocking over a chair right beside her and another horse blowing up right behind her in the Walk-Trot class. There were only 3 halter classes, Stallions, Mares & Geldings all ages. Since Topas is only 3, I had told Mary not to expect to win in the mares class since Topas is still a 'work in progress' and there were plenty of very nice mature mares. HOLY COW again! Topas won!!! I about cried down both legs! LOL!! I rode Topas in a Walk-Trot class. I thought that was as much as we should require of her for this first time out. She behaved so well and placed second in that class. What a good girl she was. I also showed Johan in the Stallion's Halter class. He won!! I have shown him 3 times in halter, once in Turlock, CA., once in Libby and this time. He has won everytime out and took Grand Champion Stallion at both Turlock and Libby. To me, this guy is 'eye candy', very dark gray and a head that is simply stunning. I'm not prejudiced or anything??!! LOL! I rode Johan in his first ever Senior Western Pleasure Class and he WON!! Another HOLY COW!! This was the first ever Fjord show for Deanna and Brijten. They both had some butterflies, but worked hard the entire week to get through their 'stage fright'. We've all 'been there - done that'! They were courageous and pushed past it all and I was, again, proud of my 'kids'. And then there was Dusty. I had been asked to do our Freestyle Reining demo with him. He is now 23 years young - THE proverbial energizer bunny! I decided that it would be fitting to dedicate this performance to his sire, Anvil's Pluto, who passed away in June. We did it in conjunction with the Stallion Review since every horse that came with us on this trip was from his seed. Dustenai is a direct daughter. Brijten and Johan are both grandsons and Topas is a great grand daughter to Dusty. The real PROOF of a stallion is in his ability to sire good offspring. I thought it would be quite fitting to bring in this cross section of what Dusty has produced. I came in first and then the other 4 followed. They lined up head-to-tail in front of the audience and then Dusty & I turned to face them. It was pretty cool and I had goose bumps looking at 'my family'. The other 4 then left the arena and Dusty and I did our Freestyle demo. There were several video cameras going and Dan Watanabe said that he would try to edit them together and come up with a good copy. Speaking of the Stallion Review, none of us presenting stallions had any idea what the others had planned, but it actually seemed as though it had been intentionally choreographed! We did the Freestyle Reining, one was ridden bridleless, one was driven hitched in harness, one was ground driven in long lines and some were shown in hand. A nice display of very different things. I was asked to carry the Ameri

I took one of my friends 8 year old little girl to see the show.Something that she had never done before as her family can't afford to give the her horse life she would love. She sent me a thank you card. On the front of the envelope was the address written across the whole letter as big as it could possibly be. Inside the letter written side ways and misspelled was this . Kindness is born of the heart. Thank you so very much Bonnie for letting me come to Moses Lake with you and everyone! From Julia What a special trip for a little girl. She did such a great job helping with the stalls and feeding and of course rounding up all the other little kids she even got stung by a bee on the way home!. I thought her moment should be shared. Kim Bekow - Original Message - From: "Eike Schoen-Petersen" To: Sent: Monday, March 16, 2009 4:34 PM Subject: German stallion show / Equitana - long, but read it anyway! This message is from: "Eike Schoen-Petersen" Last weekend the German Jubilee Stallion Show took place at Equitana, the world's largest equine fair, at Essen, Germany. 40 licenced and performance tested Fjord stallions were presented to the judges for the evaluation of type, conformation, correctness, movements and overall impression. The trotting round took place in the big arena, 5000 visitors watching the best German Fjord stallions being trotted up. The spectators sat tight for one and a half hours, fascinated by our wonderful breed. The association's decision to move the stallion show to this venue for our 35 year jubilee certainly proved effective in terms of showing to the real public. Equitana draws several hundreds of thousands of visitors every two years - a good opportunity to show off!! Judging was done by two professional judges from Germany and Mr. Jan Verbeeck from Belgium, judge from the international list of Fjord Horse International. In the final round the Stallion DEXTER by Dylan - Orlandos was the obvious champion. Dexter was placed first at his licencening as a young stallion, took first in his performance test and now took the Championship!! Great support for our personal breeding strategy as we leased Dexter on the spot when we first saw him and used him for a season. Dexter's offspring has developed as expected and we are proud (and a little sad) to announce that two of his daughters will be leaving for North America next week. Our own white dun Norwegian bred stallion Solbjør Borken took second place in his ring of stallions 12 years and older, which places him somewhere between 4th and 6th of all the licenced and performance tested stallions in the country. He was awarded a "Bundesprämie" = "Federal Premium" by the National Equestrian Federation, the highest honour a breeding horse can receive in our country. True to his form Borken was the definite "Mister Cool" of the show, followed by his promising son Björn. Borken was about as calm, quiet and well behaved as a horse can be and showed at his best. We are very proud and having a quiet glass of champagne while Borken is back in his pasture, wondering what everybody got so excited about. Along with the two Dexter fillies we are sending another white Borken daughter to the US next week and of course we congratulate the new owners on choosing horses with such distinguished pedigrees! On Sunday the German Fjord Association and Fjord Horse International hosted an international conference, with equine scientist Dr. von Borstel lecturing on "Breeding in Small Populations / Risks and their Avoidance" and two rounds of discussions with an international panel: Prof. Nils Ivar Dolvik, head judge of the Norwegian Fjord Association, Karl Vie, "embassador" of the Norwegian Fjord Association, Ursula Jensen, representing the Canadian Fjord Horse Association, Maureen van Leeuwen, secretary general of the Dutch Fjord Studbook, Sabine Münch of the Swiss Fjord Association, Jan Verbeeck representing the Belgian Fjord Studbook, Birgit Mortensen, president of the Danish Fjord Association, Leif Grimbühler, judge for the Danish Fjord Association and myself as host and president of the German Fjord Association. The two rounds of discussion covered the topics of "market vs. museum / what are we breeding for?" and "type vs. performance / how do we keep the balance?". Both rounds gave a good insight into the philosophy and strategy for the breed in the different countries. From the scientific lecture the need for a common strategy was obvious to everybody and during the discussions common views and opinions outweighed the differences by far. As a result of these discussions a common international vision and strategy for developing and marketing the Fjord horse breed seems to be the next logical step. Further activities of our association at Equitana include the presentation of Fjord horses in the "Fjord Village" with exhibitors from all parts of the country and Norwegian participation by Norges Fjordhestlag, the Norwegian Fjordhestsenter at Nordfjordeid with their A(rtificial) I(nsemination) and semen collection facilities, plus the Norwegian Fjordhestgaard at Breim. For the first time in many years the spectacular evening Gala Show includes Fjord Horses, a quadrille of 12 driven pairs! For fun our Fjord driving team put together two 6 in hand plus two 4 in hand plus two pairs for the day program, doing the same pattern in the day program. German stallion show / Equitana - long, but read it anyway!
Along with the two Dexter fillies we are sending another white Borken daughter to the US next week and of course we congratulate the new owners on choosing horses with such distinguished pedigrees! small pony 2wheel show cart for sale to pay for ponys dr. bills
This message is from: "Debby" I've posted this cart to the list before, I'd paid 3000. for this show cart, its meant for a show ring, about a 42, 43 inch pony. I have pictures. I'd tried to sell it for 2000., to get a cart for a miniature but I've given up on doing that. My small pony, who I'd gotten the cart for, has had founder issues for a long time now. This past November he was showing signs of something going on in his backend...I thought it was in his foot. I hauled him to the local vet, who claimed that the farrier was taking too much hoof wall and the pony was walking on his soles. I have had problems finding a good farrier in this area for ponies with issues. Anyway, showed the vet his back leg, he felt of his stifle and said he though he was just "tired" from his front feet and resting more on his backend. Well, around Christmas, his backend was bad and I knew it wasn't in his feet, it had to have been his stifle. Hauled him to a really good clinic 2hrs. away, and he had a tear and lesions in his collaterel ligament and something to do with "medial"menisal desmitis? I have his paperwork. This was the first week in January, he stayed with them so their farrier could do his feet per xrays, I think the farrier was a bit too aggressive, he was really sore on his front feet. Anyway, he's bee on and off since then, hauled him back there about 4 weeks ago, they felt his back leg looked much better, but I told them he's been on and off, just happened to be his good day : ) Anyway, I think adrenalin kicks in and they don't show it so much when they are in strange places, he's that way. But he's had a bad bought this week, started Monday, had to increase his bute to 1 gram twice a day. We're hauling him to a clinic Friday the 13th, yikes, that is a bit closer, but I'd used the vet several years ago and he did a great job with one of my fjords...and I want a second opinion before I give up on the guy. He is IR, he doesn't sweat in the summers, he's a metabolic mess. ANYWAY, I have to sell his cart for medical bills for this guy. I'd take 1500. for it if someone wanted it for arena shows, which I KNOW we've been talking them down here lately. Anyone that wants to know more about it can ask Tammy at Central Harness in Austin, Tx, I have her email address...she'd had it on consignment for me, but through the winter, things are slow to move and the economy being what it is. I'll be at the old Brookshires parking lot with it tomorrow, Sunday, after lunch, in Canton, Texas, if anyone is close, depending on the weather obviously. The shafts are 66inches, like I said its for a 42inch shetland type..its black, gold pinstriping, I have pictures... thanks...Debby in Tx Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

Fjord Conference and national Stallion Show at Equitana Germany 2009
This message is from: "Eike Schoen-Petersen" Dear Fjord Horse friends, as has been discussed at the FHI meeting last year the German Fjord Association, Interessengemeinschaft Fjordpferd e.V. (IGF), is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. During this year there are two weekends with events that we would like to invite you to attend: 1.The National Stallion Show on Saturday, March 14th, during the world's largest equestrian fair "Equitana" at Essen, Germany. As of today we have more than 40 licenced stallions entered, most of them performance tested and therefore competing for the federal premium. 2. On the night of Saturday, March 14th, a spectacular quadrille of 12 driven pairs of Fjord horses will be part of the famous and fantastic Equitana horse gala, the "HopTopShow". The HopTop Show is the ultimate (and original) Horse Gala! 3.On Sunday, March 15th, there will be a Fjord Horse conference open for members from all Fjord Horse International organisations with a scientific lecture by equine scientist Dr. U.von Borstel, University of Göttingen, on the topic of "Breeding in Small Populations" covering general breeding methods, the use of insemination as a tool, and the prevention of negative effects from possible inbreeding, followed by a panel (podium) discussion with representatives from the attending countries, discussing the topics of "Type vs. Performance - How do we keep the Balance?" and "Museums vs. Markets - What do we Breed for?". 4.On the weekend of August 7th-9th we are hosting the European Championships for Fjord Horses plus the National Breed Show at Alsfeld near Frankfurt. The Breed Show will include the 3-year-old futurity for mares, the "Future-Cup/Zukunftspreis", classes for all Fjord mares registered in any of the FHI member organisations and a national Foal show. The European Championships will include ridden and driven classes. 5.During the weekend of August 7th-9th there will be a free Fjord Youth Camp, inviting children from all Fjord Nations to participate, hoping to promote contact among the young Fjord Horse friends. For reduced tickets to the Equitana fair and for the special tickets for the evening Gala "HopTop Show" please contact me as soon as possible. The participation in the conference is free of charge to international participants. The lecture and discussion will be held in English with optional translation into German. If you need any assistance with hotel accomodation or transport / shuttle, please let me know. There are still some contingents of less expensive rooms in the vicinity of Essen. Hoping to see you all soon! Best regards, Eike Schön-Petersen Interessengemeinschaft Fjordpferd e.V. Carol Tacey Calenders & Libby's Show/Evaluation
This message is from: "gsfulton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> We ordered a couple of Fjord Calendar's from Carol Tacey (Totem Farms) the photos are great. We had her ship them to Libby,Montana back in September. We brought 2 Fjords to Libby, 1 for Gordon to drive in the show & 1 to be Evaluated. Gordon and Spunkie came home with lot's of ribbons ( of all colors). He got a blue ribbon in the log skid again this year, so we will be going back to Libby in 2009 so he can defend his title. We brought a 3 year old mare from our own breeding ( Edymore Reka ) to be evaluated. Aurora Leivdal-Haavik from Norway ( the young lady that is staying with Catherine &Rune Lassesen in Oregon) handled Reka for us, as neither one of us could run fast enough for the evaluation. Thanks Aurora, you did a great job. Edymore Reka received a Red Ribbon with a score of 76. That's not to bad seeing Reka was pulled out of the pasture less then a month before and was only halter broke. Right after all the horses were evaluated, and before to ribbons were given out Wayne Hipsley gave the most informative talk regarding the animals that had been evaluated. He also gave a clinic the next morning , that man is a wealth of knowledge. We would also like to thank the Libby Show committee for all their hard work in making Libby the great show that it is. Well its time to go play with a horse or two, so take care. Soaking Boots and dressage show
This message is from: beth gerst <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, Hi Valerie, Glad to hear you are doing good with the surgery!! I actually go the real cheap way when soaking for the elusive abcess or whatever else is ailing the hooves!! I bought a small size rubber feeder (you know the black round, low sided tub style. I used to try to use a bucket and he would pick up the leg and there would go the bucket and everything in it!! Hubby actually gets the credit for this idea.It is just one of those low sided tubs that people use to feed horses on the groundI bought a smaller one I think it might be 2 or 3qt feeder. It is WIDE so if he moves a little his foot stays in the tub and if he picks up his foot the sides are low enough and he usually picks up his foot high enough to where he just steps right out of the tub without knocking the entire thing over...I then just move the tub to where he is and put his foot right back in...it is shallow enough to see that the epsom salts are on the bottom and doing their job and that his foot is sitting flat...as some horses will just stand on their toe and not put the foot all the way in and in a bucket you really can't see what the hoof is doing, also, If you fill it just about 3/4 of the way with water it also covers just up over the coronet band so it is basically the perfect fit for about $6 bucks at your local Agway store or cheaper online! The wrapping is the cruddy part!!! Back breaking!! :-)) Hope this helps and keeps the finances in check!! Sarah, You guys definitely won at the show! I give a ton of credit for just taking three challenging students to a show period!!! I do have to say I laughed out loud when I read the one girl who jumped out of the ring and then back in!!! I (head hanging low) did the exact same thing!!! I had a Hanoverian mare at the time and she was just a WITCH no matter how you looked at it. She had been pissy through out the entire training level test my nerves and her tightness just didn't make a pretty picture....(my first show with her, of course!) I went by the judges box at C and asked her for the canter on the left lead and she went straight thru my hands and legs when I asked for the Canter and bend in the corner and she went straight instead of turning in the corner and up and over the rail!!! I was laughing so hard but gathered myself and cantered right back over the rail and continued doing my 20 meter circle and finished the test laughing the entire rest of the test!!! The judge commented to me (with a chuckle in her voice) she would also make a great three day eventer!!! I told her she was a hunter in her previous life and she told me she had great form both on the jump out and in the ring with knees up and beautiful rounded back!!! We laughed and on top of it we have it on VIDEO!! My daughter still loves to watch it and get us all laughing to this day!!! I guess we all have to start somewhere!! All the kids were winners just for going and competingyou and they should be very proud!! Beth and Lex in CT. RE: Moses Lake Show
This message is from: "Jacquelyn Leuener" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thank you to all the Show Committee, Taffy Mercer (excellent commentary), Judge Hipsley (excellent acumen), the Danish dignitaries, Kristin & Rory Miller and ALL who worked and participated to make Moses Lake a fun, safe and rewarding experience. It was wonderful to have the dignitaries there and visit with Birgit again. The clinics were very educational and quite valuable. Nothing gave me goose bumps more than witnessing owners/handlers take their horses into the ring to present to Judge Hipsley, or entering the dressage court, or trail class and giving it their all. Not to mention the suave turn outs by all the veteran drivers in attendance (you know who you are ladies & gentleman).Brian with his team are gorgeous and Karen driving & riding her young mare for the versatility award and then pulling 16 foot timbers in the log skid!! So cool! Anne on Misha performing & the vaulting team were fun to watch. Ursula, like a little kid, cruising back and forth on her bike to the indoor arena made me giggle. Who needs cable or satellite TV with entertainment like this! The Grant County fairgrounds are very conducive for showing and I just hope next year they bring back the landscaping a bit and scrub the women's' bathroom & showers..and get the PA system out by the barns working. :-) Congratulations to Jim & Judy Jeude of Bridgeport CA, their son Jeff and his family from Montana, who won the Kelsi Cook Family Fjord Horse Award on JJ's Gunnar! It was wonderful to see a family enjoying the show together with Gunnar. What a lovely sentiment by the Cook family and homage to their daughter. The long haul from Nevada (close to 14 hours) was worth it and I am so proud of my 4 year old mare, Alena. Maybe next year I can exhibit at Moses and Libby and present my young gelding as well. We shall see! Special thanks to Karen of Great Basin Fjords & Sandy for their support and laughter. Until then, be well and do good work. Moses Lake 2008 Show
This message is from: "Ursula & Brian Jensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 2008 will be remembered as a special year for the Fjord owners/breeders attending the Moses Lake Show. Three Danish Fjord Officials arrived with Ursula Jensen and were introduced with their own flag and anthem at the opening ceremonies. Birgit Mortensen, Danish Fjord Horse Association President and FHI Vice-President along with Edith Hansen, Dressage Trainer and Clinician, and Ole Olsen Danish Evaluator/Judge provided the members with a clinic on Friday afternoon. It was a good educational opportunity for our members to better understand the Fjord Horses of Denmark and Europe. A special thanks to Penny Lane who worked hard as the hospitality representative for the Danish dignitaries In a special dedication to two of our deceased members; Kelsey Cook, and Don Torgenrud, Brian Jensen drove a French Postillian Hitch. After a short reading by the announcer, Taffy Mercer, the hitch walked a quiet circle to Norwegian music. Aaron and Greta Cook accompanied the hitch riding on the wagonette. In honor of Kelsey Cook, the Pacific Northwest Group have created a Memorial Family Fjord award given each year to the deserving family fjord based on points gained over the show. Ursula Jensen's Penfrydd's Raynor was successful in winning the most Versatile Fjord award. The basic class requirements have been increased to truly represent the Versatility of the Fjord Horse. A special Thanks to David and Connie Van Hoof for their Show committee leadership and hard work. As well the other members of the Show committee pitched in where they could throughout the three days. The Show ran safely and smoothly throughout its duration. It is my understanding the Show was also a financial success. Wayne Hipsley, the Show Judge often provided a educational commentary after the classes, and as well gave a mini-clinic on Sunday AM speaking to the Conformation of the Fjord Horse. One can always learn from Wayne. Anne Appleby, along with her scribe Elizabeth Walton of Portland, Oregon Judged the ridden English Dressage classes. Anne as well, was very helpful in educating the class entrants regarding their ridden tests. The Moses Lake Fairgrounds and Show Venue stands as possibly one of the best Fjord venues presently used in North America. It offers a huge indoor arena with offices, announcers booth, cafeteria, and stands for spectators. The barns used are all brand new with plenty of grass areas for horse trailer parking and RV parking with full hookups. There are two large groomed outdoor arenas which can be used for warm-up, Western Trail, and the English Dressage Tests. At times there were three different types of classes happening at the same time. Due to fuel costs the Fjord attendance was down from last year, however I believe this venue offers true expansion for the Fjord Show and its members. I invite other Fjord owners attending this show to add their comments and observations. A great success for this group and its members. Brian Jensen Ursula and Brian Jensen Box 1032 Lumby, B.C. This message is from: Genie Dethloff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Valerie, I hope that you are recovering well. I know that I will have to have knee replacement surgeries in the future! How is Willow doing at Beaver Dam; anyone interested yet? We took Pjoska to a local dressage show this weekend. I got a very respectable score of 64.5 in an Intro dressage test. My trainer got a 70.8 and a 72.4 in Training level which were first places in both classes. If we could just get more of a motor on Pjo she's be a great dressage pony! Hopefully by next spring I will be ready to show her more myself. She really likes to go to the shows and is not bothered by all the strange horses or sights. Luckily this time I remembered her grazing halter so she could hang out on the grass with us. She is on a dry lot and is hand grazed for 30 minutes when ever I am at the barn so letting her enjoy hours of grass at the show would not be safe for her. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks for the report Genie! Usually this nice show comes and goes with no fanfare on the list, so it was nice to read about it. I am layed up for a bit with a knee replacement, so did not get to go this year. I have been the past 4 years, though only entered a halter class. Hopefully it will still be there next year. Certainly a beautiful part of New England. NFHA show
This message is from: Genie Dethloff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello all, We just came home from a great weekend at the NFHA show in Richmond, Mass. I have been a spectator at several fjord shows but this is the first one that I had the pleasure of attending with a horse. As this was my mare, Pjoska's second show ever and first away from our home area, I took my trainer, Marty. My barn buddy Betty came also for a gals' horsey weekend away. The drive was about two hours. This was the first time I had taken Pjoska out on a trailer alone and she did great. She loved the show and never made a mis-step the whole weekend. I think she felt it was way more interesting than standing in the paddock swatting flies. It was sort of a home coming as she doesn't live with any other fjords, and there she was surrounded by them. Being a grey fjord, she got extra attention as she was in the minority. I have gone to fjord events before and always found the group to be very friendly, but this NFHA group was more than friendly, they were downright inviting and embracing. All three of our names were learned right away and we felt adopted. Marty has shown other breeds and she couldn't believe how everyone cheered for each other and how helpful and supportive everyone was. This was the clubs first time at this facility and it was wonderful. The portable stalls brought in were top notch, clean, airy, bright and sturdy. The rain on Friday tested them and they stood up very well. The barn manager must have previously been in the circus as she was up on top of a very tall ladder stringing extension cords so more light and power could be provided. The rings were large with very good footing and the grounds were expansive and gorgeous. We signed-up for limited classes but then kept adding ones. Marty was like a kid riding in the games Friday evening. Pjoska had never been asked to move that quickly from a stand still. After a kick-up in surprise she got the idea and boggied. Her dressage training came in handy as she was able to easily bend around the poles and barrels. Being a more slender fjord, she did not provide the best platform for sit-a-buck! Saturday was her big day. She has only been to one show before, a dressage show, but the weeks of practice since then really paid off. Marty and Pjoska won high point in dressage with 71 points in Training Level Test 4, so we brought home one championship ribbon and a silver plate. They also won first in the Equitation and Pleasure classes for maiden horses. We were honored to be judged by Remmy Bron of the Netherlands, which made our dressage scores even more meaningful. As I haven't shown since I was a kid, and then only a few times, I rode in Intro A for dressage and a walk-trot equitation class. I was not a winner but felt like one as I overcame a very large hurdle, a fear of riding in shows! Sunday we had no classes. Norma Coli kindly lent us a fjord, Maren, so Marty and I could go for a ride around the beautiful property. I want to thank the organizers and those that ran the show for providing such an enjoyable weekend. Bill and Norma Coli were top notch show managers and so helpful; they also had a very impressive group of students with them. Cliff Ennis and his wife Denise Antaya were very efficient show secretaries. Rita Maccini and her husband Mark provided great food and planned a very fun banquet. Kay Konove planned a great silent and live auction and wonderful prizes. Bill Coli was a great auctioneer but was unsuccessful at stopping his wife from bidding on the expensive items - oh well Norma deserved to have that beautiful picture of Rosendalsborken (I think that was his name), the ideal fjord. Please forgive me if I left out anyone or confused your names or roles as I am new to the club and am not very good at remembering names! My friend Betty wants to dress up her lovely quarter horse, Timmy as a fjord so she can bring him next year! Pjoska won't get much rest as she has a dressage show on Sunday, another exciting day off the farm! -- Genie Dethloff and Pjoska Killingworth, Connecticut The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
Libby Evaluation, Show, Clinic Info on PNFPG Website
This message is from: "Olivia Farm, Inc." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Greetings, This message is to announce that the registration packet and event schedule for the 2008 Libby International Fjord Show has been posted and is now available for download on the Pacific Northwest Fjord Promotional Group website... http://www.pnfpg.org . You can also link to the evaluation packet for the NFHR evaluation planned for the two days prior to the show from the same location directly by going to http://www.nfhr.org/nfhrevaluation/2008_Libby_Eval_Entry_pkg.pdf . Additional information and registration is available for a clinic with Wayne Hipsley, NFHR Evaluator, judge, and global equine consultant to be held at Libby on the morning of Friday the 12th of September. The clinic will focus on the evaluation and selection of Norwegian Fjord Horses with particular attention to helping people have a better understanding of conformation, movement, and the form/function relationship. This will be a great follow up to the NFHR evaluation allowing those with questions to find clarity to their experience and will also serve as a great segueway to the show. Not just for those with an interest in breeding, the clinic will prove to be quite valuable in helping buyers make better choices when selecting Fjords and in helping people to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of their current Fjords. This is naturally useful in designing more effective training programs and maximizing a Fjord's potential. Of course, the annual Nordicfest celebration will be held concurrently for what will again prove to be a weekend of education and fun! Hopefully you are all having a wonderful summer and we'll hope to see you there! Happy Fjording! Dan Watanabe The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
